LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, After a wonderful summer, another new season is finally upon us, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to have you here. We’ve named this season TOPS of the POPS, and with good reason! This season’s artists are the crème de la crème and have won a tremendous number of awards and accolades. Today we start the season with action-adventure fanfare, featuring the titans of film and telivision score composition: John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, and more. All told, this show’s artists have won 41 GRAMMYs between them. With soundtracks ranging from Star Wars to Indiana Jones, and from The Dark Knight to E.T., you will leave this show feeling like a hero! However, you may notice one work is notably absent from Danny Elfman’s catalogue — The Nightmare Before Christmas. On October 24 and 25 at The Met Philadelphia, we will perform the score in its entirety, live to the film, for an unforgettable Halloween bash. Be sure to come in costume! It’s easy to see that all of Philly is looking forward to the rest of the season — tickets for POPS Rocks Abbey Road, A Philly POPS Christmas, and A Philly POPS Uptown Christmas, featuring Broadway sensation Tituss Burgess, are selling at record pace, so make sure to get your tickets today! See you soon at the POPS!

The tourism industry’s impact on our economy and job market were evident through the record 45 million people that visited our region last year. Whether you’re a tourist or a resident who likes to tour your own town, VISIT PHILADELPHIA thanks you for supporting our region.

We are of different generations, but both loved the POPS that night — and still do.” — Jeff Guaracino, President and CEO of VISIT PHILADELPHIA® POPS Goes To Hollywood: An Action Adventure Experience | September 2019 | 13
SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT Lyn Tuckman
One of the longest subscribers to The Philly POPS, Lyn Tuckman has been a regular in the POPS audience since before 1998! Originally from Roxborough, the lifelong educator spent most of her career in the Cheltenham School District, near her home in Elkins Park. She and her husband Merv Tuckman subscribed for years to both the POPS and the Philadelphia Orchestra — and sat in the same great seats for both: Orchestra Tier, in the center of Row A. They were both lifelong lovers of music. Lyn sang in choirs and played piano. “My husband knew classical music inside and out,” Lyn says. “We always had music playing in the house — from Doo Wop to Opera.” After Merv passed away, Lyn kept her POPS seats and now brings friends and family members to the shows. Lyn has two children, two step-children, and seven grandchildren. Her daughter Jennifer Rackow sings in The Philly POPS Festival Chorus. Bringing her five-year-old granddaughter to a holiday show to hear her mother sing was “pure delight.” “I always walk out of the POPS feeling happy,” Lyn says. “It’s my upper. I enjoy the POPS and adored Peter Nero. I’m very excited about Todd Ellison coming in, and I really like David Charles Abell.” She also enjoys the Salute Series and has attended Memorial Salute three years in a row. “The POPS musicians are extremely talented and versatile,” she says. “Guests artists have been outstanding entertainers.” Favorite Shows: “Cole Porter was an all-time favorite and At The Hop! dancing in the aisle brought back so many good memories. Most of my friends like rock, but give me Ella, Frank, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, and I’m a happy camper.” Important Cause: Lyn has been involved with the organization Rubye’s Kids for 26 years. Its mission is to “empower children in need” in the Philadelphia area. One of many initiatives is creating learning centers in local homeless shelters. The learning centers feature computers, a library, games, and seating areas. “It’s a comfortable oasis for homework help as well as for reading or playing games with families,” she says.

POP QUESTIONS
Music Director Todd Ellison Where did you grow up? On Melody Lane in Essex, Connecticut, near a piano factory that produced keyboards for Steinway (among other piano companies) from the mid 1800s to the 1970s. Where do you live now? New York City’s SoHo neighborhood. When did you start learning or performing music? I asked my parents to enroll me in piano lessons at age 6. What instruments do you play? Piano, Organ, Clarinet, Violin (though you wouldn’t want to hear that) What’s your favorite song, musician, or band? Thanks to my parents, I grew up listening to all kinds of music, from show tunes to jazz, rock to classical. I studied classical music as a piano performance major at Boston University, but always knew my heart was in the Broadway and Hollywood pops vein. Nowadays, my home life is dominated by pop songs of Taylor Swift and Walk the Moon, thanks to my young children (and I admit: I don’t hate it). What’s your favorite Broadway show and why? 42nd Street. Besides having the greatest opening number of a big musical, it’s the kind of show that leaves an audience tapping its feet with joy. Plus, I conducted exactly 1,000 performances of the 2001 revival before I left for another favorite of mine, Spamalot. Why do you love performing with The Philly POPS? This orchestra is made up of supremely talented individuals who excel at playing any style of music they’re given. They also love playing and being together, which is rare in an orchestra of this size. Do you have any hobbies besides music? There are so many aspects to music that I love: performing, composing, orchestrating, arranging. I have never been bored working on music. But I also love BBC Murder Mysteries, traveling, kayaking, driving my 1993 Jeep Wrangler with the top down to the beach, and Coke Zero. Tell us about your family? My partner Gavin and I have two kids, ages 6 and 8. My very supportive parents still live in my hometown, as does my brother and his family.
16 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
What’s your favorite city or place in the world? My hometown: Essex, Connecticut When did you first visit Philly? My first visit was to hear The Philly POPS holiday show with Peter Nero almost ten years ago. What’s your favorite thing to do in Philly? Visiting Reading Terminal with my kids and trying a new food vendor every time. Then again, it’s thrilling to walk through the charming historic streets, visiting City Hall, and reveling in the majesty of the city. (But those Liberty Bell waffles at Reading Terminal thrill the entire family.) Who is your favorite Founding Father and why? I’ll pick John Adams, as he had the best role in the Broadway musical, 1776! Have you had a Philly cheesesteak? How do you take it? It was our CEO Frank Giordano who introduced me to my first Philly cheesesteak at the POPS Ball last year. My order: Prov witout.
