Julia Roberts Makes her Comeback Stela Obradovic Magazine Editor

Julia Roberts is soon to be back on our cinema screens in the new hit movie ‘Duplicity’ to be released this Friday starring Clive Owen (Inside Man) and Tom Wilkinson (The Full Monty), directed by Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Trilogy). It has been a long time since Julia Roberts has been involved in any of the celebrity news let alone in any films, the ‘Pretty Woman’ star’s last big blockbuster hit was Oceans Twelve in 2004! Her latest mention was when on the 20th of February 2009 she called for a ban of celebrity children photographs, as a passionate mother of three Julia is known for trying to keep her private life out of the public eye. During the filming of ‘Duplicity’, rated a PG for language and some sexual content, Julia admits to finding it awkward kissing co-star Clive Owen in front of her camera man husband and family who were on set during the filming, “It’s awkward...when you’re not kissing your true love” she said to a reporter. On first reading the script, Julia was shocked by the nude bedroom scene that she had been written in for, and managed to convince Tony Gilroy to tone down his original version as she is not one to get her clothes off easily for the camera! Julia claims to have got much closer with Clive Owen through the process of making this

film and has said that they have been known to get together as families for dinner and says she “is pleased to have made such a good friend on and off screen”. The film falls under the crime/thriller genre and is based on a pair of spies (Roberts and Owen) who get together in order

to pull off the ultimate job, with a tagline of ‘Outwit. Outspy. Outsmart. Outplay. Then get out.’ It promises to be this year’s must see movie.

Jade’s Cancer Battle is Nearly Over Annie Gooch Magazine Writer

since then, having opened two beauty salons named Ugly and Homme Fatel, starred in numerous reality TV shows, made four fitness DVDs and written two autobiographies – in short, Jade Goody will undoubtedly die a very rich woman. After much controversy in her past, including a massive race row in 2007, Jade has managed to recapture the favour of the public with her commendable attitude to her illness and her strong desire to help other women in her

Whether you have loved her or loathed her over the last seven years, it is impossible to look at Jade Goody’s current situation without feeling a certain amount of sympathy, if not for her, then for her two young sons who will soon lose a mother. The pictures of her in a weakened and distressed state which have been splashed all over the papers in the last few months may be distasteful to some, but raising the profile of cancer screening cannot be a bad thing and the fact that the amount of woman having cervical smear tests has increased by 20% since Jade’s diagnosis proves that the publicity is having an effect. Jade herself ignored a smear test in 2002 which revealed abnormal cells, and her story has shocked many women into action after receiving similar news. Although apparently becoming famous for being an ignorant loudmouth, Jade has proved herself to be an amazing business woman Jade Goody with husband Jack Tweed.

Coldplay and Kylie were among the many artists performing for the victims of the bush fires in Australia on Saturday. The Sound

concert held in Melbourne was sold out to become the largest paid concert ever held in Australia. More than 78,000 tickets were sold for the Melbourne event, with extra tickets being added for the Sydney concert. More than 100,000 tickets were sold across both cities, at $75 each, raising over $10 million for the Red Cross Bushfire appeal. The bushfires began in early February, with arson believed to have been the main cause. They were described as the worst fires in the history of Australia, claiming more than 200 lives. One man has already been charged with starting one of the blazes and

situation. Jade is said to have only days left to live, and no matter what our opinions of her while she was alive, our sympathies must go out to her family, who are losing a daughter, mother and wife at the tragic age of 27.

half of the money raised from the concerts, which featured international acts such as Jack Johnson, Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Taylor Swift, will go towards the Red Cross Bushfire appeal, with the rest going to help Queensland Flood Victims. Prince William and Prince Harry made an appearance via a radio link, expressing their deepest sympathies for the victims. Despite the rain, Sydney Cricket Ground was packed with thousands of people, singing and swaying, but still remembering the reason they were there – to commemorate the victims of Australia’s natural disasters.

Michael Jackson: “This is it” Stela Obradovic Magazine Editor

Jacko’s ‘This Is It’ tour has become the fastest selling set of concerts in music history, selling more than 33 seats a minute. (He has made more money from the O2 concerts than he did from Thriller!) Hundreds of fans lined up outside the O2 Arena last Friday morning to get tickets as soon as they went on sale at 7.00 am. 250,000 people queued online for tickets too. The first batch went on

sale two days before, on Wednesday 11th, to O2 Priority customers. Only 7,000 tickets were up for grabs in advance and yet 1.5 million people waited anxiously online in the early morning and on the phone lines to get the chance of seeing the King of Pop. That works out at around 200 people per ticket. Ticketmaster and the O2 website weren’t able to cope with the vast amount of users and both sites crashed in the morning, but were fortunately able to get back to normal in a matter of minutes. Promoter Randy Phillips told the BBC “that wasn’t anticipated.” The fifty date tour has now been extended to run until February 2010. At a press conference

Jacko told the viewers that his concerts would include the songs that “the fans want”. The ticket prices originally varied from £50 to £75 but are now being sold by touts for no less than £250. If you were lucky enough to snap up a ticket to this once in a lifetime opportunity, be sure to hold on to it and be one of the lucky people who gets to see Jacko’s last ever tour in the UK. It promises to be a night you will never forget. In the words of the King of Pop, “This is it, this is really it...this is the final curtain call”.

Summer is here! Stela Obradovic Magazine Editor

Summer is upon us, and so is the new season’s fashion! We have put together range of styles to bring you eight different looks that you could try this summer, ranging from evening cocktail dresses to comfy boyish daywear. This season is bringing back bold print and bold colour and it’s all about being individual so try to buy at least one item from a non-brand store and mix and match it with big brands in order to achieve an individual look. Accessories are all the rage with the heat on its way: clutches and peep toe heels, wedges and sling bags, summer hats and drop stone earrings will all definitely not go amiss this summer! Natural looking wavy hair is back along with relaxed clothing for that ultimate ready-to-hitthe-summer-festivals hippy look. Sleek shiny hair is rocking up on the night scene, and during the daytime it seems that this summer’s ultimate day face is one of natural beauty and clear complexion with a healthy sun kissed glow. Keep away from the strong orange fake tans and colourful eye make-up ladies! Evening faces are back to the classic gentle ‘English Rose’ complexion, a touch of smoke, and ruby red lips. This summer promises to be a hot one so look out for comfortable shoes as blisters are making a comeback and a good sweet floral perfume will bring you up to date with this season’s big hit scent.

8

The Cocktail Dress The must have party dress this season is the cocktail dress. Partner up a feminine dress with a punky belt to add a grungy edge to a pretty pink dress. Colour was all over the cat walk this season so when buying a dress try to go for light colours or deep reds, forget about black and grey for the summer! If you want to spice up an old dress why not try some coloured tights. The big thing to hit the fashion scene this summer is circus print! When buying a dress why not try and get that Britney edge and buy a colourful diamond pattern to stay in touch with your wild side this summer. If you have no hips, getting this pattern on just the lower part of the dress will emphasise your waist giving the illusion of a curvy figure! To accessorise your outfit try a vintage head piece or a simple clutch bag and heels. The stiletto is long gone this season, try thicker heels - not only are they far easier to walk in and more confortable, they create a much softer leg line, something not to miss this summer!

The Boyish Look Summer is back, and so is the boyish trend. Relaxing at a barbeque or going for a summer walk, this is the relaxed look that is hitting it this year. Baggy ripped jeans are back in fashion with a loose shirt, add in a pair of converse and your summer outfit is complete! This look is easily achievable, steal your boyfriends baggy shirt or even your dad’s old painting jeans. Cheap and easy you won’t want to ignore this comfortable look this season!

Floral Flower print is here to stay! This season’s must-have is anything floral. Bright colours and big prints are the way to go, do not miss out on buying this season’s hottest trend. The big names have been parading floral up and down the catwalks in Milan, Paris and London fashion weeks but you don’t have to go deep into your pockets to achieve this look. The patterns and colours have been filtered down into almost every department store so you have no excuse to ignore this print this season! Accessorise with a few gold pieces but nothing more, the print should be bold enough! Wedges are this summer’s must have shoes, comfy and open, they can’t go amiss.

The Hawaii Look

This season the exotic island colours are coming back, soft calm colours with big patterns. Partner up with plain cool colours like white linen trousers or light simple jeans to keep the relaxed beach theme prominent. Backless tops are all the rage this summer. Halter necks and boob tubes are going to be filling the streets with their relaxed summery feel so don’t forget your strapless bras ladies! The best way to ruin a backless top is with bra straps! Funky beach colours worked into your jewellry will only heighten the sense of island calm in your outfit. Try some wacky bangles or bright big earrings to complete your look. Nail polish is the ultimate cherry-on-topof-the-cake when it comes to creating outfits. For the true Hawaii feel why not try and hot pink or even a cool orange to add to that Hawaii heat feel!

The Relaxed Look Stay relaxed with jeans and a floaty top this summer. Gentle floral tops can be worn to spice up your current wardrobe and still remain relaxed. Light jeans and wedges are definitely the way to go if you want to remain cool this season. Why not try a big accessory to brighten up this style? Large handbags for that summer-walk look or even just a large pendant on a long chain as an up-to-date fashion statement would really complete this stylish look.

The Beach Look Boob tubes and swimming costumes are back! Stay in touch with your beach side with stripes and shorts this season. This look is comfortable as well as fashionable so must not be missed this summer. Try a new pair of sunglasses for this season, the bug eyes are still hot on that scene but smaller sunnies are making their comeback! Depending on the occasion, this look can be glammed up or dulled down by simple choice of shoes. Try wedges for the full on look, pumps for day wear and flip-flops for the ultimate relaxed chic!

Stripes

Stripes are back in town this season. Try thin stripes for the girly look and thicker stripes for a bolder quirky look. Striped dresses must be from thin material otherwise they are ‘so last season!’ Jumper dresses are now out and won’t be back at least untill September so lock them away for this season! Pumps and flat sandals complete this comfortable girly style and also give your feet a break!

Naval When you’re dressing up for a night out, why not try the navy style? Bold colours, shorts, stripes and peep toe patent leather heels create this funky look. Combining different big hits this summer creates a fabulous nightlife outfit! When wearing bold colours like red try working your make-up into the look. Try using natural make-up and soft colours on the eyes whilst enjoying some lip stain to unite your makeup with your outfit. When trying to create the ultimate hour-glass figure, horizontal stripes across the chest really exaggerate the size and width of your upper body. For small chested people this can be a super plus, however for those of you with a larger chest or wider shoulders this can create a top heavy look so be aware of this when dressing in stripes. Dark shorts will make your hips and bottom appear smaller, for some people this can really work. If you lack somewhat in that department try a busier print on your lower body to exaggerated size and shape.

What’s new? Reviews Fame for Faryl Rosie Dean takes a look at the “Britain’s Got Talent”-launched rising star, Faryl Smith Faryl Smith, the thirteen year old who came fourth last year in the talent contest Britain’s got Talent, raised the roof at Twickenham on Sunday before England’s rugby match against France. Faryl gave an awe inspiring performance of the national anthem in front of 82,000 rugby fans. England then went on to trounce their rivals 34-10. After appearing on Britain’s got Talent in 2008, Faryl got offered a £2.8 million record deal with Universal, has become the fastest-selling solo classical debut yet. She follows in the path of Catherine Jenkins and Charlotte Church, but is already set to overtake their successes. Her debut album shot to straight to number six in the charts on Sunday, selling more than 20,000 copies in the first four days of release. This beat the previous record set by held by New Zealander Hayley Westenra - whose debut had in turn broken the record of Charlotte Church, in 2003. However, the youngster did not even come from a musical, let alone classical background. Her father is a health and safety inspector and her mother is a hairdresser. Her parents were initially reluctant for her to enter Britain’s Got Talent, in case it might “ruin her childhood”. Despite this, the fame does not seem to have gone to her head, and she is remaining grounded. She isn’t worried about her finances, and still attends Southfield School for Girls in Northamptonshire.

her recent successes are anything to go by. It just goes to show that ordinary people can find fame, and that a simple talent contest is capable of producing stars.

In the future, Faryl has dreams of attending the Royal College of Music, which seems likely to become reality for her if

“Lost” Rediscovers its Masterful FirstSeason Storytelling Alex Gibson reviews the first eight episodes of season five of “Lost”

After last week’s gap in the schedules, the increasingly confusing ABC series plane crash/ island survival drama Lost returns on Sunday with its ninth episode this year: “Namaste”. It seems appropriate, therefore, to take stock of the season so far and assess the first eight episodes of the show’s penultimate season. The season began with a depressed, alcoholic, pill-popping Dr. Jack Shephard crying over the coffin-dwelling corpse of John Locke and finally realising that after three years, he and the other Oceanic 815 plane survivors who made it off the Island in season 4, must return to the mysterious location. Meanwhile, on the island, those they left behind faced the constant threat of brainfrying time travel. While the off-island storyline plodded along at a deeply uninteresting pace, the on-island storyline went from strength to strength. The decision to have Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Miles, Charlotte, Locke and Jin time travelling (after the island became “unstuck” in time during the season four finale) allowed the writer’s to fill in some of the massive backstory to the island which they would otherwise have had difficulty doing. While revelations about what happened to Danielle Rousseau’s science team, that there’s a nuclear bomb on the Island, and that “Mr. Bad guy” Charles Widmore was once an Island native, came thick and fast, Charlotte succumbed to a severe time travel nosebleed, imparting a chilling message of things to come to Daniel, with her dying breath. Locke succeeded in his mission to avert

20

the time jumps, in a move which left him lying in a Tunisian desert, separated from his beloved island. Locke now had a new mission, to return the departed Oceanic Six (Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and toddler Aaron) to the island, in order to ensure its safety. When none of them believe him, Locke prepares to hang himself, in a desperate attempt to convince them of the severity of the situation. In the nick of time, the show’s resident chess player Ben turns up to talk him down, wipe away his tears, and strangle him to death. With Locke safely strapped in his box, Jack and the other escapees meet the mysterious Mrs. Hawking in a church to discuss their return flight. And so the intrepid five (minus Aaron) and Ben (after a brief trip to presumably kill Widmore’s daughter Penny) board Ajira Airways Flight 316 which

lands on the Island. In mid-flight, however, Jack, Kate and Hurley were sucked from the plane by a bright, white light which transported them to the Island’s final time travel landing spot: 1977; where Sawyer and the gang have joined the Dharma Initiative. Dare I say it, but the first half of this season may have been the best ever of this show so far; certainly since its first season. In terms of storytelling and character development, as well as the plot twists and reveals which make Lost so popular, it has been masterful. We can only look forward to the tricks producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have up their sleeves. What will we discover in 1977? Who will bite the dust? What will be this season’s finale plot twist? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out.

What’s new? The “other other other Irish guy” takes on Cambridge Becca Inglis reviews Ed Byrnes’ Corn Exchange performance Fame is a fickle friend: anyone who has been in the limelight will tell you that. Five minutes of fame is what people work towards, and unfortunately is all they tend to achieve. This was a strong theme in Ed Byrnes’ performance at the Cambridge Corn Exchange last week on 11th March. “Enjoy it while it lasts, Michael McIntyre,” he proclaims resentfully, lifting his arm to the ceiling, much to the audience’s amusement. Ed Byrne began his career as a comedian in 1994, circulating the London clubs and winning quite a following before making his debut in Edinburgh in 1995 at the ‘Young, Gifted and Green’ promotional show for Irish talent. Since then his popularity has gradually escalated, with him making many an appearance on the popular satirical quiz show “Mock the Week” and being invited to perform for “Live at the Apollo”. He has even released his own DVD (“Pedantic and Whimsical” 2006), though it has not sold quite as well as “WAGs Workout”, much to his distaste. Though he does put up a convincing argument blaming the piracy of DVDs on YouTube in the duration of his show. Byrne is a self-proclaimed “whiny bastard”, and there was plenty of material along those lines throughout the course of the night – from feminists who supposedly do not appreciate the changes that have already taken place in society to the patronising nature of the new piracy advert on DVDs, he covered the lot. He also took time towards the end of the show to reflect on his recent marriage, saying that the best part of being married was “not having to plan a wedding”. The nightmare that is wedding affairs was touched on and his shock at the expense that certain aspects of weddings can carry, such as invitations. He also explained the sense of humour that his wife has through an anecdote involving his proposal, when she initially refused him before exclaiming “I’m only joking!” What a disappointment that was to Ed, who had immediately started to plan the more positive points of his seemingly imminent bachelor lifestyle. It is almost surprising that the man who has essentially just grumbled at a room full of people for a whole night manages to win the crowd over, but Ed Byrne carries it off flawlessly. His jokes are witty, well-timed and incredibly observant, and I would heartily recommend going to see him after his “two year interval” from Cambridge. Even if, as he bitterly complains, he is only currently in the middle of the fame spectrum. Above: Performances by “Ra Ra Riot” and “Editors” at Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Café Rouge is the best place to go if you’re looking for a taste of France with their delicious French cuisine. Despite the name, it is much more like a restaurant than a café with a menu that includes a chargrilled chicken baguette if you just want a snack or a classic beef casserole if you want something more filling. The Easter Spirit Amelia Lupson Magazine Writer

Easter is being celebrated this year on the 12th April. Easter is a moveable feast, and its date is based on the lunar calendar, as the celebration originates from pagan festivals. Although there have been some attempts to change Easter’s date from the lunar-inspired calendar to the more well-known solar calendar, these attempts have failed.

Easter is the Christian celebration of the day Jesus was resurrected, three days after his crucifixion. It is the Christian equivalent of the Jewish celebration Passover, yet it sometimes seems that this religious holiday has been commercialised with the likes of the Easter Bunny and chocolate companies cashing in on Easter egg sales – but the ‘disappearance’ of its’ religious origins needn’t be seen in such a bad light. The period of lent (which represents the 40 day period that Jesus spent in the desert resisting Satan’s temptation) has led to many people “giving up” things such as unhealthy

food, smoking, and alcohol which can help improve their health and happiness, as well as a feeling of achievement. Also, the holiday has managed to resist many of the commercial aspects Christmas has gained, such as Christmas cards and expensive materialistic giftgiving. All in all, it’s clear to see that Easter’s spiritual and religious meaning has been well maintained in comparison to other holidays.
