EX-MAYOR PIAN KEESIN ARRESTED

here was high drama over the past week in Patong following the massive raids by hundreds of police and troops intent of smashing the perceived criminality rife in Phuket’s tourism capital. Police were delighted that they had managed to arrest 74 of 83 people

SPORT the case of Mr Pian’s predecessor as mayor, Dr Anan Ananthanawat, wanted in connection with the 1999 assassination of his business associate, a disgraced police officer called Weerapol Panrod. The remaining nine still unaccounted for were ex-Mayor Pian Keesin, his two sons Preechawut (better known as Prap) and Patawee, along with five of the managers of the family business, Pisona Co; and Adichart Tinkohyao, leader of the Baansuan Taxi Queue. Police give Keesins hard time Continued from page 1 The answer was an emphatic no. All but Prap and Adichart surrendered at the Navy base in Cape Panwa on Monday. Prap, in Bangkok and unable to get a flight to join them, surrendered at a police station in Bangkok, arriving back in Phuket in the evening, and Adichart turned himself in at Phuket Town Police Station the following day. Mr Pian received what could be best described as a hero’s welcome when he and the others stepped from a Navy minibus onto the grounds of the police station. Hundreds of supporters who had been waiting for hours mobbed him, shouting “Don’t give up!” Some wept. Others handed him roses or draped him with garlands of marigolds. Pian smiled broadly and thanked them. Inside the police station, however, there was a much

of the building, to a large room with tables piled with computers and boxes of docu-

ments – evidence seized last Thursday. There was also a safe and a box full of cash. In the room, too, waited Gen Paween, who held an impromptu press conference, “After our action on August 28,” he said, “we copied all the hard disks we found at Pisona Co [the Keesin family business] These have been collected by the technology police. Other evidence will be shown to the media today. “Plus there are the three safes [which have not been opened yet]. All three safes are very important for us. All vehicles, too, will be investigated. That is the task of the Anti Money Laundering Office [AMLO]. “Today, all the offenders will be charged with being organised like Ang Yi [Chinese Triad gangsters], which is against the law. Then the investigation will go on to look for other people involved. “Tomorrow, officers from the Revenue Department will check all evidence to see if Pisona has paid tax correctly. If we find evidence of money laundering, then additional charges will be laid against the suspects.” Former Chalong Police Chief Pol Col Saman Chainarong, now in charge of the Region 8 police investigators, explained, “We searched five places – Mr Pian’s home, the Patong Bay Resotel, the Patong Bay Garden, Pisona Co and Hollywood Patong

Discotheque. “We found documents and safes, two of which we could not move here. We will invite the suspects to help us check these two safes soon.” Gen Paween then showed media a document found in Mr Pian’s house which appeared to be a list of payments to be collected every month from at least a couple of dozen businesses in the Patong area. When Mr Pian tried to make remarks to the assembled press, Gen Paween cut him off. “All evidence was found in the houses and hotels [belonging to the suspects]. We have to give officers time to check it all. “We have to give suspects a chance to speak at some point, but not now. This is not a time for officers to be questioned [by the suspects]. What I mean is, this is a time for suspects to answer questions, not ask them.” He then told the suspects to stand up, one by one, and introduce themselves to others in the room. After that, he said, “We will leave all the suspects in the cells while we go for lunch and then in the afternoon we will begin questioning them.” Gen Paween was asked by the press how long the list of payments from Patong businesses, which he had shown earlier to the press, had been in use. “I have no idea. The details still have to be investigated. I showed you this

because I want people to know about it.” Asked whether the targets of Thursday’s raids had been alerted that the police were coming, Gen Paween said, “You can see the signatures of the house owners on all the evidence we collected.” How much money was found? Gen Paween answered, “B376,975. But this is not all the money we expect to find. There are three safes we have not been able to open, and we don’t yet know who owns them.” Several computers were seized during the raids on Thursday and Gen Paween explained that the contents of the hard drives would be carefully examined by police computer experts, and then after that by officers from AMLO. Asked if Mr Pian and the others would be allowed bail soon, Gen Paween answered, “I cannot tell you. First we need to question them because there are many things to check.” Asked how long the questioning would take, he said, “I have no idea because the interrogators are not here at the moment; they have other work. We didn’t know they were going to surrender today” Asked whether the suspects could apply for bail, he said, “That’s their right. But according to Thai law the decision is up to the [provincial] commander [Maj Gen Krachang Suwannarat]. He hinted that not all those who were arrested will see the inside of the court room. Concerning the case of those arrested for involvement in the mob that blocked all roads in Patong on March 4, probably only two or three people would be charged, he said. The press conference over, Gen Paween escorted the arrestees down to the cells where they had to give up their wallets and other contents of their pockets, along with their belts, before being locked in the police cells. Nitat Prasertnatikul, lawyer for Prap Keesin, said he would apply for his client to be released on bail within 48 hours. They were released at 3am on Tuesday (September 2) on bail of B120,000 each. thephuketnews

Pol Col Saman Chainarong examines documents in one of the safes after it was broken open.

Safes contain nothing of use to ‘mafia’ probe DISAPPOINTMENT AWAITed investigators on Tuesday (September 2) when they opened two safes at the headquarters of Pisona Co in Patong, which they had hoped would contain documents useful to their investigation of “mafia” taxi activities and, possibly, large amounts of cash. Watched by Preechawut “Prap” Keesin, one of those accused in the mafia taxi investigation, his lawyer Nitat Prasertnatikol and office manager Tim Unmeanginn, officers led by Pol Col Saman Chainarong of Region 8 opened the two safes. so police brought in workers with crowbars and hammers who broke it open. Inside they found old accounting records from 1999 to 2010, a chanote land document, old checkbook stubs, and some loan agreements. The second safe contained only old documents that appeared to have been damaged in the 2004 Asian Tsunami. The same was the case at Phuket Town Police Station where a third safe was opened the same morning, also with crowbars for lack of a key. Once again the documents found inside were of no use to the investigation, Col Saman told The Phuket News.

eleased at 3am on bail from police custody, the Keesin family staged a press conference on Tuesday (September 2) afternoon at the large house behind the offices of the family company, Pisona. “I surrendered voluntarily and was well treated by the police,” said former mayor Pian Keesin, head of the family. “But I am very curious why they think we must be ‘Ang Yi’ [Triad gangsters]. “Everyone knows where I am – I have not been hiding. I’ve never actually lived here [in this house]. I live in a house in Phuket Town. “Normally, I wake up early and go to my farm. I didn’t know that the police planned to raid my house. That’s why I wasn’t at home,” he said. He said that he felt let down that police did not invite him to come for questioning. “I am a polite person. If they called

Water pistol: Pian Keesin me, for sure I would have gone. There was no need for them to issue arrest warrants like this,” Mr Pian added. “For me, jail is normal. It’s not the first time I have been inside,” he said with a grin. “There are no problems in my relationship with Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin [leader of the ‘mafia’ taxi investigation in Phuket]. We used to work together when he was Superintendent of Patong Police and I was Mayor. “My only opponents are politicians,” he added, noting that police had also questioned

him about the election campaign in the run-up to the most recent Patong mayoral poll, which he lost. Asked about money, he said that he was not rich. “All of money I have invested was borrowed from banks. But my opponents may want to damage the Keesin family’s credit rating,” Mr Pian explained. Asked about two guns found during searches of property connected to him, he said that he had bought the shotgun found in his wife’s house to protect his durian farm from thieves, and a .38 pistol also found was given to him by the authorities when many years ago he was elected kamnan. It was rusty and had never been used, he said. To raucous laughter he said, “The only gun I use is the water pistol in my trousers.” His son, Preechawut “Prap” Keesin, also said that he was disappointed about being arrested. “I don’t understand why a person who brought taxi drivers to be registered, who

set up a labour development centre, who supported the Patong Safety Zone project, and who rented space at Junceylon to run a taxi service, with very little benefit to himself, should now be branded as Ang Yi,” he complained. Asked about a list of business names with numbers against them, which police showed to the press on Monday, implying that it was a list of monthly collections, he denied this was the case. “It was just a research document,” he said. “It is for my research into corruption in Patong. All of the information in the list was entered by me; it was a list of basic assumptions I had made.” Calling an end to the press conference, Mr Pian said, “Respectfully and sincerely, I would like to thank all the media and everybody else for listening to me and for following the case. “I also thank the police for giving us a chance for a legal battle. We have done nothing wrong and we are not Ang Yi.”

Phuket guides ‘too greedy’ say tour operators T

he battle is heating up between tour guides and tour operators after lawyers from the Ministry of Tourism & Sports held a conference at The Metropole hotel recently to clarify laws relating to the tourism industry. Some 300 people attended the tense meeting to mediate the fight over the wages guides charge operators. Officials explained current law requires that guides be paid a minimum of B1,000 a day for their services. However, a tour operator who claimed to have been in the tourism business for 40 years said that things did not work like that. Guides hire themselves out for short trips, and operators like herself have to pay for guide services as much as five times a day, each time for as much as B1,000. The officials asked her for her name, but she told them, “You don’t need to know that.” She was cheered by one piece of information. “We discovered today that the law defines different kinds of guide – city guides and sea guides, for example. “So if guides change roles without qualification, I think they should be arrested,” she said. “Then they will know who they must be wary of,” she said, to applause from other tour operators. However, guides who attended the meeting did not agree at all. One man, who also declined to give his name, said, “The cost of living is very high, and we can’t afford [to live on

B1,000 a day]. Why do you want officials to force us to reduce our income?” The tour operator countered, “I did not mean to ask you to reduce your minimum income, but we do want you to reduce your cost per trip. It’s not fair for us. If you didn’t understand or did not hear me well, I will clean out your ears for you.” After the meeting the tour operator spoke with The Phuket News on condition of anonymity. “Guides have no morality,” she said. “They raise their prices but do not have any standards of service. “This affects the price of tours, because they charge us too much. Sometimes in the high season, they demand B700 or more per round trip to one destination,” she explained. “Sometimes, guides are selfish. They dump passengers at a souvenir shop as soon as they get a call offering them a more lucrative job, or when they are with the tour at a place where they cannot make commission,” she said. “Despite their rates being very expensive, the quality of service is very low. We always get complaints from tourists about the quality of guide service, and the tourists do not know that the guides are not our staff. “According to the officials today, the law says that guides must be paid at least B1,000 a day. This is a loophole because they allow us to hire them only by the round, not by the day. So if I hire them five times a day, do I have to pay B5,000?” she asked.

“Moreover, the cost of a ticket for a tour is around B1,000-2,000 per person. We make a profit of only B300 per tourist. The people who make the most money are the guides. “We find the customers, but sometimes guides hired to pick up our passengers hand out their name cards and then divert them to another tour company. They steal our customers. Is this our fault?” It is easy to qualify to be a guide but high-quality guides are very hard to find, she said. “You just have to pass a test after seven days of training and you must be able to swim. That’s it. If you ask me about the quality of the new generation of guides, I would have to say it’s low. “It is very hard for the old guides in this situation. The newly qualified guides charge the same prices as the experienced ones, and we cannot refuse to pay those prices, especially in the high season when there is a shortage of tour guides.” In the meeting the battle was brought to an end by the Phuket Director of Tourism and Sports, Santi Pawai. “Okay, I will summarise your points,” he said, “and then I will write a road map to send to the National Council for Peace and Order for consideration.” “If anyone has more suggestions they should contact me via Line. The same if anyone would like to tip us off about illegal tour companies or illegal tour guides. Then I will have them arrested,” he added.

Over B600k in damages as Patong spa shop burns FIRE BROKE OUT ON SATURDAY morning (August 30) in a spa shop behind Jungceylon shopping mall in Patong resulting in over B600,000 in damages. Spa owner, Kritiya Dasri, 28, raised the alarm at 6:20am. Fire fighters took 15 minutes to put out the fire, but by the time they arrived, considerable damage

had already been done. According to police, there was no one in the shop at the time and no one was hurt. Police are collecting evidence to determine the cause of the fire, but the most likely cause, they say, was an electrical short circuit.

inety three drivers of meter taxis – two thirds of the 139 meter taxis in Phuket – registered on Monday morning (September 1) to serve passengers at Phuket International Airport on the first day of the airport’s “freedom meter taxi service”. “We have unlocked the old system whereby only one meter taxi company was allowed a concession to serve the airport. Now, any meter taxi can register and pick up passengers here,” said the Director of Phuket International Airport, Pratuang Sornkham. The system is a replica of the one used at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airports: tell the taxi desk staff where you want to go and receive a voucher. The taxi desk at Phuket Airport is right outside the domestic arrivals hall. “There are four parts to the voucher,” Mr Pratuang explained. “One is for the taxi driver and one is for the desk staff. The other two are for the passenger. They have complete information: The taxi licence plate number, the driver’s phone number and your departure time [from the airport]. “Passengers should please keep the voucher [until they are safely at their destination with all their belongings]. If you leave something in the taxi by mistake, please call:

Passengers must tell the taxi desk staff where they want to go and receive a voucher. 076351518, or the taxi hotline at 1584. For complaints, call 1584 or complain directly at the NCPO [National Council for Peace and Order] booth at the airport,” he added. Action on taxi complaints will be taken within seven days. The new system will benefit not only passengers but also the taxi drivers, Mr Pratuang said. “After the taxi has dropped a guest from the airport to their hotel, they are free to pick up anyone else anywhere else on the island, and take them to the airport,” he added. “If any taxi driver is threatened by the driver of another taxi, they can file a complaint

directly at the NCPO booth at the airport. The same applies for any passenger threatened by a taxi driver.” Passengers boarding a taxi at the airport will have to pay a B100 surcharge. At the moment this goes into the lucky driver’s pocket but in the future, once a private

company has been found to run the system, the money will go to that company. At present it is run, free, by the military. Current fares are: B50 for the first two kilometers; then the fare per kilometer is B7 up to 21km, and B6 a kilometer after that.

Fares can be expected to go up. “A higher tariff is now being considered by the NCPO. A decision is and expected to be announced by the end of this month,” Phuket Land Transportation Office (PLTO) Chief Teerayut Prasertphol told The Phuket News. If agreed by the NCPO, that fare will be B50 baht for first 2km, then B12/km up to 15km and B10/km after that. Approximately meter taxi fares from the airport (excluding the B100 surcharge) are: Phuket City, B400; Chalong, B470; Patong, B500; Karon, B600; Laguna, B300; Cape Panwa, B520; Rawai, B620. More meter taxis will soon swell the ranks, said Mr Teerayut. “Since August 1, when we opened registration for meter taxis, I have approved a further 280 cars. They are now waiting for yellow licence plates, which will be issued at a rate of about 40-50 cars a day.” That will bring the number of meter taxis on the island up to 419. Before the official opening PLTO specialist Jaturong Kaewkasi told The Phuket News that not all taxis will be able to park at the airport, so a system has been worked out to ensure everything is fair, based on a first-come-firstserved basis. “Every day the meter taxis will have to register first at Sirinart Marine National Park in a temporary park there [in a space allocated by the park chief],” he explained.

Bus station next for meter taxi system PHUKET LAND TRANSPORTAtion Office (PLTO) plans to expand its “freedom meter taxi” system to the main bus terminal in Phuket Town as another way to encourage the growth of meter taxis in Phuket. “We are now looking at opening a desk at the Phuket Bus Terminal on Thepkrasattri Rd. It will depend on how many meter taxis want to join us,” PLTO Chief Teerayout Prasertpol told The Phuket News on Wednesday (September 3).

“We will also establish the bus station as the first place on the island for a meter taxi call centre,” he added. “You may have heard about taxi call centres in Patong, Kata, Karon and Cherng Talay, but so far no one has done anything. We think starting it in Phuket Town is better, and then expanding it from there to the rest of the island,” he explained. Meter taxis will remain as the only transportation option for tourists and residents.

“They will still be able to to get a limousine or tuk-tuk service for them. "It depends on the passenger; if they want to travel Thai local-style they may choose a tuk-tuk. Or if they want luxury, they may call a limousine service,” Mr Teerayout said. “Another option is the Airport Bus service, which currently runs between Patong and the airport. "The airport bus company is mulling expanding to Karon and

then Kata, and is also planning a new route from the Airport to Rawai,” he added. “The Patong-Kata-Karon route has been tried, but it’s hard work for a big bus to climb two hills [Patong and Karon] so we are now considering minibuses instead of buses to expand the route,” he noted. “We aim to expand the route by October to support the 4th Asian Beach Games, which will be held in November,” he added. thephuketnews

Suspected uni students stab soldier in stomach A

Soldier was taken to hospital after being stabbed.

young man just back from military service in the South of Thailand was attacked and viciously stabbed late Friday afternoon (August 29) on Pracha Uthit Rd just north of Phuket Town by four young men who, police suspect, are students at Rajabhat University Phuket. Pramote Tongsri, 22, was on leave from army camp in Songkhla, staying with his younger brother, who is a student at Rajabhat.

He told police, “I was riding my motorbike when four men on two motorbikes passed and blocked my way. “One of them started stabbing at my leg with a long sharpened piece of steel. That caused me to fall from my bike. “After that they stabbed me in the left side of my stomach three times.” He said he did not recognise any of his attackers but noticed one of them was wearing a Rajabhat University uniform. Af-

terwards, he said, they rode off. Investigators tried to check the CCTV camera at the nearby KN Supply shop, said Lt Col Somsak Thongkliang of Phuket City Police, but the camera was broken. “We have collected footage from other cameras nearby and have been questioning people in the area to see if we can find the suspects,” he added. Mr Pramote was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital where he is recovering.

80pc of people hit by Phuket beach clean-up apply for help ABOUT 80 PER CENT OF the people in Kathu District who have lost their livelihoods because of Phuket’s massive military-backed beach clearance have registered at the District Office for help in getting their lives restarted. Registration was open for residents of Kamala on Monday and Tuesday last week, and for Patong from Wednesday to Friday (August

29). The main targets were beach chair renters, masseuses and roaming food and drink vendors. Jet-ski and parasailing operators can qualify under the “other” category. “The total number who registered with us is 371 from a total of 466 beach businesses operators we inspected before the beach clean-up project began,” Kathu District Chief Sayan Chanachaiwong told

The Phuket News last Friday afternoon (August 29). Of the 371, 81 registered in Kamala and 290 in Patong. “After completing registration we will begin discussions and inspections of all the people on the list to get more details,” Mr Sayan said. “We have already made some preparations. For example we will ask the hotels to help by taking on masseuses

in their spas, and some of the beach vendors will move to booths provided on municipal land,” he explained. Patong Municipality has already prepared half a dozen booths at Loma Park. “We will try to find out first what they need and, if they want a change of career, the Labour Department will provide them with training courses,” Mr Sayan said.

Anyone else who has been affected by the clean-up can still come to Kathu District Office, but the 371 already registered will get priority, he said. Muang District (which covers Kata, Karon and Nai Harn Beaches) and Thalang (Surin, Bangtao, Naithon, Naiyang and Mai K hao Beaches) are carrying out similar exercises.

Phuket man wins B4m in national lottery A CHERNG TALAY MAN became the second Thai lottery winner in Phuket in the space of three weeks, on Monday (September 1), winning B4 million on tickets he bought. At 11am the following day the winner, Arun (full name withheld to respect his request for privacy), went from his Cherng Talay home to Thalang Police Station to report his win. Pol Lt Col Sanitch Nookong checked that the ticket had the right number – 856763 – and then recorded Mr Arun’s details in the daily log. Arun said that he wanted to keep his win private. “I don’t want to be in the news. I have a lot of grandchildren to take care of … and a lot of debts to pay … leave me in peace.” He then hung up. On August 17 Sutin and Puangkaew Nuanjan of Rawai won B24 million.

Foreigner slams into Three snatch robbers truck at are caught in Phuket red light

Big thumbs up for police as snatch-and-go robber is caught.

THALANG POLICE ON Friday (August 29) used GPS to track down a stolen iPhone and that night caught the thieves who had grabbed it just eight hours earlier. The victims of the snatchand-run were two Chinese tourists, Mr Ce Sun, 30, and Ms Xuejuan Li, 30, who had their bag containing B500 cash and two mobile phones snatched while they were walking along Ton Sai Waterfall Rd at 10am. Two teenagers on a Honda motorbike stopped next to them, grabbed the bag and then rode off. The tourists reported the robbery to police. Lt Col Pisit Chuenpet, Deputy Superintendent of Thalang Police said “At 6pm, we

found them in a rented room. Their motorbike was parked in front.” Natthapong Intan, 19, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named because of his age, were arrested and admitted carrying out the robbery. On Saturday (August 30) at 10am another snatch-andgo robber was caught five days after he grabbed a gold necklace and amulet from a Thai woman as she rode her bike along Patak Rd in Karon. The robber, Anek Yimseng, 28, from Songkhla, was caught still in possession of the stolen goods, together valued at B10,000. He was charged with robbery using a vehicle. He, too, admitted the charge. Additional reporting by Darawan Naknakhon.

A 50-YEAR-OLD AUSTRAlian man was injured after crashing into a truck at a red light on Saturday night (August 30). Police arrived at the scene on Thepkasattri Rd and found Rodney Wright, 50, lying on the road near the truck, suffering from injuries to his head and one knee. The truck driver, Rakchart Sanpee, 35, told police that he was waiting at the traffic lights when he heard something slam into the back of his truck. Mr Rakchart said, “I came out and saw an injured man behind my truck, so I called 1669 for help.” Rescuers gave first aid and then took the victim to Thalang Hospital. thephuketnews

Phuket tourism industry crackdown is postponed t a one-day conference for tourism businesses organised on August 27 it was announced that a planned crackdown on illegal tour guides and tour companies skating around the law, scheduled to begin the following day, has been postponed. The conference was organised by the Navy and the Phuket office of the Department of Tourism & Sports. “This conference is aimed at educating all tour operators about the Tourism Business and Guide Act of 2008, and to inform them in advance that I plan to strictly enforce this law,” said Santi Pawai, director of the office and also recently appointed as registrar of the Southern Office of Tourism Business and Guide Registration. “[After this conference] no one will be able to claim that they do not know the law,” he warned. “Never mind what has happened in the past, we will all start together now with a clean slate. “Business owners will be responsible for looking

Protests by tour guides will no longer be supported, said Santi Pawai, director of the Department of Tourism & Sport. after the guides [they hire]. We will be more strict about [guide] registration cards and we will not allow guides who are registered [outside Phuket] to operate here,” he added. “All guides will be told that there must be no more protests. If there are, we will no longer support the protesters,” Mr Santi noted. He did not mention that

protests, such as the one against illegal Chinese guides in June this year, are in any case illegal under martial law, which stipulates that no more than five people may gather together in a public place. Asked about relaxing the restrictions on foreigners working as tour guides – which was suggested by coup leader Gen Prayuth

Chan-Ocha in his weekly national TV broadcast last Friday (August 22) because it “can lead to a shortage of … guides” – Mr Santi answered, “As long as I get no official letter telling me to relax the rules, I will go on enforcing the law as usual. If I don’t, I could be charged with dereliction of duty.” The crackdown on illegal guides by Tourism & Sports officials, backed by police, tourist police and navy troops, was postponed, Mr Santi said, “because we want more officers to help us to do it. “Officers will begin with the big tour companies and check all the details in their registration papers. If the reality does not match with the registration documents, we will suspend them for six months,” he added. “If we come across unlicensed illegal tour operators while we are carrying out our inspections, they will be barred permanently from registration, which means they will never again be able to [legally] do tourism business.”

Phuket International Airport officials urge women to make use of the parking spaces allocated for ladies.

Ladies urged to use ‘pink parking’ PH U K ET I N T ER NATIONAL Airport officials are urging women to make the most of the new “Lady Parking” area for their own safety. “Six parking spaces have been allocated for lady parking since the beginning of August, but nobody uses them,” Director of Phuket International Airport, Pratuang Sornkham, told The Phuket News. The parking spaces set aside for women – part of the nation’s celebrations to honour the 82nd birthday of HM Queen Sirikit on

August 12 – are in front of the main airport terminal. “It makes it easier for our security officers to keep an eye on things, I don’t understand why [women] are reluctant to use them,” he added. “Ladies coming in alone or with children under 12 years old are allowed to use the spaces,” he said. A permanent womenonly parking zone will be established in the soon-toopen new car park. “We expect this to be finished by the end of the month,” Mr Pratuang added.

International hospital Police subdue sold in B3.61bn deal crazed axeman Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

angkok Dusit Medical Ser vices PLC ( BDMS), bet ter known as the Bangkok Hospital Group, has bought the Phuket International Hospital (PIH) for B3.61 billion. The news was published by the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) on its website last week. In a letter attached to the announcement, the company wrote, “Bangkok Dusit Medical Services PLC (BDMS) would like to announce the result of the board management meeting on August 27 at which we approved setting up a branch under the name “Bangkok Phuket International Hospital” to expand our medical businesses in Phuket.”

Phuket International Hospital, soon to be renamed Bangkok International Hospital Phuket. The deal sees BDMS take over 99.99 per cent of the partnership that owned PIH. “BDMS will also take responsibility for debt of Phuket

International Hospital, which is not more than B416 million,” the latter said. “the transfer of ownership is expected to be finished by the end of 2014.”

PIH was registered as a 151-bed hospital on June 22, 1990, with capital of B195 million under the name “Siriroj Hospital”. It has since been

expanded to 281 patient beds. “The propose of taking over the [International] hospital is to improve our efficiency in serving Thais and foreigners in Southern Thailand; to improve the logistics of transferring patients from one hospital in the group to another; and to support medical tourism in Phuket.” Bangkok Hospital Phuket’s PR officer confirmed the news on August 28 but could give no details. “The board [in Bangkok] are now in discussions and we will call a media conference as soon as we can reveal details,” she added. PIH Marketing Manager Piyarat Kulvanit also confirmed the buyout. However, she said, “Our management team is still managing the hospital as usual.”

New Dibuk Hospital now open BA NGKOK HOSPI TA L group has opened some of the facilities at its new hospital on the island offering care for “basic cases” at medium-range prices. The facility, the Dibuk Hospital, is still under construction on 10 rai of land on Chao Fa West Rd, to the south of the Honda building, but can already provide emergency and outpatient treatment. By the time it opens officially next month, the B600million hospital will have 32 beds, rising eventually to 224. Hospital director Dr Piriya Atisook told The Phuket News that the hospital will have the latest technology, much of it reliant on QR codes, “This means more complete information and faster action.

A nurse checks the QR code on a patient’s wristband. “The first time a patient comes to register, we will scan the chip in their ID card and then take a photograph. They

will then be issued with a QR code wristband.” “This will save time. For example [after the patient has

seen a doctor] the pharmacist receives the results from doctor along with the prescription for medication. “The pharmacist will scan the QR code on the patient’s wrist band to confirm identity, and will then get the code for the type of medication and the amount. “With 60 staff working here at present it is already saving time and a great deal of paper.” Other eco-friendly savings have been built in, Dr Piriya said, “We have decided to use [power-saving] LED light everywhere in the hospital.” A lot of thought has also gone into the hospital’s layout. The main buildings will be vertical tubes with rooms arrayed in a circle on each floor. This will make it faster

for nurses to get to any room. Bathrooms in the wards will be on the outside of the tube, with windows that will allow sunlight to naturally control bacteria. Although the hospital will not be “cheap”, it will charge only B1,600 per night for a bed. Dr Piriya said, “I want to be clear about prices. I would not describe Dibuk Hospital as ‘cheap’ but it is a place for Phuket people who want basic or ‘general case’ treatment. “If the case is serious, the patient will be transferred to the main [Bangkok] hospital, if that is what the patient wants. “We know who are the best doctors for any case at Bangkok Hospital, so the patient will be referred to the right doctor.”

PHUKET CITY POLICE were involved in a threehour standoff on Wednesday morning (September 3) with a crazed man armed with an axe. They were called after someone noticed him driving around near the OrBorJor hospital with his big sound system cranked up, and with an axe in one hand. “We saw him driving around the soi when we arrived. We were worried about neighborhood safety at that time,” said Col Sermphan Sirikong, superintendent of Phuket City Police, who led 20 police and rescue workers to the scene. “We stopped his car and convinced him to get out. Then an officer took the car key and locked the car.” The man spent the next two hours screaming at the police and his car and trying to hack it open with his axe. Police tried to reason with him. When that did not work they shot him with a taser gun, but it had no perceptible effect. So they then shot him in the right arm with a rubber bullet. It still took three police and two rescue workers to wrestle the well-muscled man to the ground. After tranquillising him, they strapped him to a stretcher and he was taken to the OrBorJor Hospital for a check up and drug-testing. Col Sermphan said, “We are waiting for the report from hospital. If he was just in psychological distress, there will be no charges because no one else was hurt. “But if lab results show he was on drugs he will be sent for rehab.”

umours of links to criminal elements on the island have long swirled about former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, his two sons, Preechawut and Patawee, giving the family an image akin to the fictive TV-series family, The Sopranos. However rumours are just that: rumours. And therefore should not be confused with facts. With the arrest on Monday (September 1) and subsequent bailing of the trio, plus five associates, the wheels of Thailand’s legal system can now start turning concerning these high-profile characters, who appear to have almost as many supporters as detractors. The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has had the effect of emboldening the local authorities to clarify the extent, if any, of the Pisona Eight’s criminality. And, in the event of any convictions, just punishment will duly follow.

This is a welcome juncture to a long-running saga – finally the “truth can out”, through the correct channels given the gravity of allegations made against these people of undeniable influence on the island. The Pisona Eight can now mount a defence with the help of their lawyers and with legally binding evidence to bolster their case. The prosecutors will fight from their corner with anticipated ferocity, but their case – and it will deal with multiple allegations – must be fought within the parameters of Thailand’s legal system. The coming trials will likely deliver a compelling narrative that will transfix not only Phuket, but the whole Kingdom. For these nationally infamous “Bad Boys” (the negative perception that sticks is a fact, regardless of the fairness of its basis) will now have their day in court,

a venue where verifiable truth and evidence trumps innuendo and hearsay, and where the standard of “innocent until proven guilty” applies. One of many intriguing facets of the Pisona Eight saga – a thriller with many chapters still to go – is that the group enjoy, among certain people in Phuket, a kind of Robin Hood status, as evidenced by the red roses and floral garlands presented to the former mayor when he turned himself in. That said, Robin Hood was a law-breaker, albeit it one whose crimes the mists of time have burnished with virtue. The courts will now decide conclusively if the law has been been broken by any of these colourful anti-heroes, so leaps of judgement at the moment are inappropriate. Let the law take its course. Who knows, after the proceedings are completed, who will emerge smelling of roses?

Soldiers menaced over land issue

Teen dies in beach ‘hazing’ ritual

Soldiers of the 2nd Army have received threats as they reclaim areas of military land in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province from illegal ownership by “influential people”. Col Sommai Bussaba, operations chief-of-staff of the 2nd Army, said on Tuesday (September 2) that he had received threats, war nings that his team should watch their backs for their efforts to retrieve 18 blocks of land covering about 528,000 square metres near a cliff on Khao Nong Chuam mountain in Khanong Phra sub-district of Pak Chong. His team found that many senior police officers, public prosecutors and university lecturers claimed possession of the land, although it actually belongs to a special warfare unit in Lop Buri province. Moreover, there were also buildings constructed on the land. Col Sommai said his team had attempted to retrieve state land at 11 locations over the past month.

The director of Pathumthani Technical College is facing a disciplinary probe after a 17-year-old student died on Saturday (August 30) during a hazing ritual in Hua Hin. Phokhai Saengrojrat had been taking part in student initiation activities on Sai Noi Beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan. He was a firstyear vocational student in the college’s construction programme. There were 40 freshmen in his class, but only 15 of them willingly took part in the hazing activity. A witness told police he saw three to four men force Phokhai to consume what looked like an alcoholic drink. The men then pressed his face into the sand on the shoreline, as the tide came in. The cause of death has not been verified but drowning is suspected. Chaiyapruek Serirak, secretary-general of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, said all hazing activities are strictly prohibited. Bangkok Post

Street-life meaner now for ladyboys L

adyboy prostitute Gam is used to being arrested, paying a fine to police for soliciting, and then being released almost immediately to continue her work. But since Pattaya’s new police commander started getting tough on street walkers, Gam and other prostitutes say they are spending the night in custody in a police office. “Getting arrested is not something new,” said Gam, a tall, slender ladyboy in her twenties, scouting for customers on Pattaya’s City Beach Road last week. “We all have been through this before. All we have to do is pay the fine and get back to work. “What is new to all of us is that the police lock us up in the office until the morning. We can’t even make a phone call to ask someone to help us out. By the time we get out, we can’t work any more.” Another transgender sex worker, Sandy, seated on a beachside bench, told the Bangkok Post Sunday (August 31) she had been working the

Ladyboys entertaining foreign visitors in Pattaya, amid a suddenly less liberal atmosphere. Photo: Ahconstantine area for three years and had never seen nightly police raids until recently. Sandy said they are conducted almost on a nightly basis and are targeted at beachfront areas – especially near Pattaya’s seedy Walking Street area – where ladyboy and female prostitutes hawk their trade. “Life is already hard as it is,” Sandy said. “I can’t imagine what it would be like if the NCPO came to town.” One police officer told the

Bangkok Post that arrests for soliciting can be difficult to make, as the sex worker and client must be caught making financial negotiations for a sex act. Usually the sex worker is taken to the police station, fined B500 and released. Som, a ladyboy sex worker recently arrested by police, said foreigners and police volunteers were posing as customers to help secure arrests. “They pretend to be a customer or get some foreigner

to pretend to be a customer,” Som said. “They negotiate the price, and once we agree the police reveal themselves to arrest us.” Thitiyanun “Doi” Nakpor, the manager of Sisters, a health counselling centre for transgender people in Pattaya, said she received a phone call for help at midnight last week from a ladyboy arrested by police. Ms Thitiyanun said she went to Walking Street and confronted a police officer who had set up a checkpoint. “Why is it that you are only arresting ladyboys?” she asked the officer. The policeman did not give her a direct answer and told her to go to Pattaya City Police for an explanation instead. There she saw at least 100 ladyboys locked inside an office. The soliciting charge is not serious enough for them to be held in a cell. “It is the NCPO’s policy,” a duty officer explained to Ms Thitiyanun. “They have issued an order, and we implemented it.” Bangkok Post

India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the ancient Japanese city of Kyoto on Sunday (August 31), the second day of a visit intended to strengthen security and economic relations. Modi was accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on his visit to a historic temple. It is unusual for a Japanese prime minister to greet a foreign guest outside the capital, Tokyo. The two leaders visited the 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple of Toji, a World Heritage site, and offered prayers in front of ancient statues early Sunday. They also took a short walk near a five-storey pagoda in the company of a priest. Buddhism, born in the Indian subcontinent, was brought to Japan through China and Korea in the Sixth Century. Modi arrived Saturday at Kansai International Airport near Osaka by special plane for a night in nearby Kyoto. On Monday the two leaders held a summit in Tokyo.

Macau re-elected its incumbent leader in an unchallenged contest Sunday (August 31) as the gambling hub faces growing calls for democracy amid anger over deteriorating living conditions and government accountability. The city’s sole chief executive candidate Fernando Chui was voted in for a second term by 95 per cent of a 400-strong pro-Beijing electoral committee, in a contest which activists have called “ridiculous”. “Chui was elected by 380 votes,” a Macau government spokesman told reporters. There were 13 blank and three invalid ballots among the 396 committee members who voted. More than a dozen people marched and bowed in protest outside the venue where the vote was taking place. “Every time we bow down is a reminder that Macau people have no choice (in this election),” protester Sulu Sou, resident of the former Portuguese colony, told reporters. National ‘Martyrs’ Day’ is approved by Beijing C hinese lawmakers have approved a national day to commemorate people who died in wars resisting foreign invaders, state media reported. The country’s top legislature on Sunday (August 31) declared September 30 as Martyrs’ Day, which will be marked annually “with events across the country”, the official news agency Xinhua said. Beijing defines martyrs as “people who sacrificed their lives for national independence and prosperity”. “The move is aimed at publicising martyrs’ achievements and spirits, and cultivating patriotism, collectivism, and socialist moralities so as to consolidate the Chinese nation’s cohesiveness,” Xinhua added, citing the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the country’s rubber-stamp parliament. China’s ruling Communist Party has long used nationalism as part of its claim to a right to rule. It stresses that under its leadership since 1949, China

References to national humiliations are common as part of the narrative of historical victimhood, such as the pillaging of the Old Summer Palace by a joint British and French military expedition during the second Opium War in 1860, and the signing of “unequal treaties” granting several countries concessions

and assorted colonies. The most frequent references are to Japan, which invaded China in the 1930s, with the two countries fighting a full-scale war from 1937 to 1945. Beijing researchers estimate that 20.6 million people died as a result. The two countries’ relations are heavily coloured by their history, and Beijing and Tokyo are embroiled in a series of rows, including a

long-running diplomatic spat over disputed islands in the East China Sea. Tensions rose further this year after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in January visited the Yasukuni shrine, which honours Japan’s war dead, including convicted war criminals. Chinese officials often call on Japan to “reflect” on its past, while Tokyo regularly invokes the need to develop a “forward-looking” relationship with Beijing. Abe has repeatedly declared that the door to talks is always open. There was no suggestion that Martyrs’ Day will be a public holiday, but Xinhua said personnel from more than 4,300 sites dedicated to martyrs will be urged to go to schools, communities, factories and barracks to “publicise martyrs’ achievements”. The announcement comes after Beijing’s leadership, earlier this year, designated September 3 as a national day to mark the defeat of Japan in the Pacific War. AFP

Pressure growing in London for EU exit CONSERVATIVE LAWmakers could pledge to support Britain leaving the European Union, irrespective of what powers are returned to London from Brussels, newspaper The Independent reported on Sunday (August 31). The report highlights the growing pressure facing Prime Minister David Cameron as he contends with the rise of the populist and eurosceptic UK Independence Party (UKIP) ahead of a May 2015 general election. Cameron has vowed to renegotiate a return of powers from Brussels to London and hold a referendum on EU membership in 2017, and has said he would campaign for Britain to remain in the bloc. But The Independent reported that “up to 100” MPs

@thephuketnews

from his ruling Conservative party are preparing to defy their leader by pledging support for an EU exit in their 2015 election manifestos, regardless of any changes to Britain’s membership. “My election manifesto will confirm my view that we should leave the EU,” Conservative MP Mark Reckless said. Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said he had not been approached about the idea, but said he was “very interested”. On August 28, Cameron suffered a blow when Conservative lawmaker Douglas Carswell defected to the UKIP, triggering a by-election that could make him the party’s first UKIP member in the House of Commons. oscow and Kiev representatives were set to meet in Minsk on Monday (September 1) after Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the stakes in the Ukraine conflict by calling for statehood to be discussed for the restive east of the former Soviet state. Putin’s remarks on Sunday came just hours after the European Union gave Moscow – which the bloc accuses of direct involvement in the Ukraine insurgency – a week to change course or face new sanctions. “We need to immediately begin substantive talks on questions of the political organisation of society and statehood in southeastern Ukraine,” the Russian leader was quoted by Russian media as saying. Moscow has previously only called for “federalisation” that would grant greater rights to the eastern regions of Ukraine, where predominantly Russian-speakers live. But Putin had sparked speculation that he may be seeking to create a pro-Russian

Putin’s stance over Ukraine is stiffening. Photo: Presidential Press and Information Office of the Russian Federation. statelet when he began to employ the loaded tsarist-era term “Novorossiya”, or New Russia, to refer to several regions in southeast Ukraine. His spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin was not talking about “Novorossiya’s” independence from Ukraine, but rather “inclusive talks”. “Only Ukraine can agree with Novorossiya,” he was quoted as saying. Kiev has warned that it was on the brink of “full-scale war” with Moscow over the crisis in

its east, which Europe fears would put the whole continent at risk of conflict. The EU agreed to take “further significant steps” if Moscow did not rein in its support for the rebels, with new sanctions to be drawn up within a week. Kiev said the invigorated rebel push of the past days has included substantial numbers of Russian regular army contingents, which are now concentrating their forces in major towns.

“Terrorists and Russian soldiers continue to concentrate personnel and equipment in regional centres,” said security spokesman Andriy Lysenko. Representatives of Kiev, Moscow and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) were due to meet in Minsk, the capital of Belarus which borders both countries, on Monday under the so-called Contact Group on Ukraine. Russia has insisted repeatedly that Kiev must speak with rebels holding parts of east Ukraine if the conflict is to be resolved. Kiev, however, has been reluctant to sit down at the table with the separatists, especially when many of their leaders are Russian. A Kremlin statement said that Putin and his Belarussian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko had “emphasised the importance of organising” the meeting gathering representatives of “the Kiev authorities, the southeastern regions, the OSCE and Russia”, during a phone call. LABOUR LAW SECRETS PART IV

WARNING! What are the rules for issuing a written warning to an employee? for termination “for cause”. Note: The major legislation governing labor protection in Thailand is the LPA, which prescribes labour protection standards applicable to both employers and employees working in Thailand. The LPA does not apply to Government and State Enterprise employees. Any employer who violates or fails to comply with the LPA may be punished according to the level of his or her offence with a fine of B5,000 to B200,000, or imprisonment of up to one year, or both.

Jerrold Kippen Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen

I

n our last article we discussed employee termination and noted that the Labor Protection Act (LPA) distinguishes between termination “for cause” and termination “without cause” of an employee contracted to work for an indefinite period of time. Where such an employee has work for at least two months and is then terminated without cause, the employer will be liable to pay severance compensation to the employee – depending on the length of service – an amount equivalent to between 30 and 300 days of pay at the employee’s most recent wage rate. We also quoted what the LPA considers to be the six qualifying “for cause” reasons for which an employer may terminate an employee, among them being where an employee “violates the lawful and just work rules or regulations or orders of the employer, after receiving written warning of the employer . . . such written warning is valid for only one year.” But what qualifies as such “written notice”? For instance, does the employee need to acknowledge it, or even sign it? The LPA does not detail the

requirements beyond the need for it to be in writing. However, the Thai Supreme Court has helped to clarify this question by interpreting the following as ways to satisfy this written notice requirement: The employee signs the written warning; The employer reads the written warning to the employee and a third party signs the written warning as a witness. Posting the warning in a conspicuous place at the place of employment where everyone can see it; or Sending the written warning to the employee by registered mail. It should be emphasised again that it is not possible for an employer to “go back

in time” by issuing a retroactive written warning to back a dismissal. In other words, it is not possible for the employer to become aware of an employee’s misconduct and only later issue a written warning. When an employer has done that, the Supreme Court has interpreted the employer’s failure to issue the warning earlier as an indicatiion that the employer consented to the conduct. Therefore, an employer must issue any such warning as soon as the offending conduct occurs, ideally immediately after such conduct occurs; otherwise repetition of such conduct, even within the next one year, will not be grounds

Russian tourist numbers falling, Kbank warns KASIKORN RESEARCH Centre estimates tourist arrivals from Russia will decline by 5.5 per cent to 1.65 million trips by year-end, which will seriously challenge Thailand’s tourism sector. The centre said Russia is a priority market for Thailand, ranked third after China and Malaysia. “With nearly two million visits a year and revenue of B1 billion this is an important market for Thailand.” Arrivals have tapered off due to the political situation in Thailand and even though the situation has stabilised in the past four months, there are also economic issues in Russia that are slowing travel demand. The centre estimated that the year will close with 1.65 million trips, down 5.5 per cent

from last year, and generating B1.16 billion in revenue, a decrease of 5.3 per cent. It recommended strong marketing action, promotions through online channels and a campaign to increase information flow on Thailand’s attractions using online media. “Online media will help distribute promotions to tourists faster and will encourage more online bookings.” The report recommended that the emphasis should be on the high-end travel markets. “We’re delighted that they share our vision of creating rigour for the industry.” Paul Poole, founder, managing director and chairman of Paul Poole (SEA), said, “Despite the turbulent times of late, Thailand is a fast-growth sponsorship market and has overtaken Singapore in the last quarter for domestic spend. “We see a lot of potential for ASN in the local market where brands and rights holders need rigour to buy, sell or plan their sponsorship activity more effectively.” Since the end of 2013, the sponsorship market in Thailand has suffered the postponement of several major sponsorship platforms. Yet before that, according to ASN data, sponsorship spend had rallied 43 per cent in 2013, arguably due to Thailand’s environment of high media inflation which

Regional airlines still seeing passenger growth PRELIMINARY TRAFfic figures from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) for July show continued growth in both international passenger and air freight demand. Asia Pacific airlines carried 22.1 million international passengers in July, an increase of 4.3 per cent compared with the same month last year, boosted by strong regional demand. In revenue passenger kilometre (RPK) terms, demand growth was a slightly more measured 4.0 per cent. But available seat capacity expanded by 5.7 per cent, resulting in a 1.2-point decline in the average international passenger load factor, to 78.8 per cent for the month. Commenting on the results, Andrew Herdman, AAPA Director General, said, “Overall, during the first seven months of this year, Asia Pacific airlines carried a combined total of 145.3 million international passengers, an increase of 4.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. “Nevertheless, Asia Pacific airlines are facing challenging business conditions, with additional capacity placing further downward pressure on fares and yields. “As a result, revenue growth has been lacklustre, and profitability remains elusive for many of the region’s carriers. Airlines are carefully reviewing their fleet deployments and future capacity plans in the light of conditions, whilst maintaining tight cost controls.” AsiaTravelTips

New Tourism Minister has anti-graft record K

obkarn Wattanavrangkul, 54, has been named Minister of Tourism and Sports in the new Cabinet selected by Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha. Ms Kobkarn is chairperson of Toshiba Thailand, a joint venture her parents started in 1969 with Toshiba Corp, with the latter holding 45% of the equity. Mrs Kobkarn is often described in the glossy pages of lifestyle and society magazines, such as Thailand Tatler, as an “Artist of Business”. She is also well known as a campaigner for stamping out corruption in the private sector. In an interview with the Bangkok Post a year ago, she said, “Corruption in this country has gone beyond the level that we can accept.” Ms Kobkarn said she draws her anti-graft campaign inspiration from Dusit Nontanakorn, the late former chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and Charnchai Charuvastr, the late former president and chief executive of the Thai Institute of Directors (Thai IOD). The men were pioneers in

Dusit and Charnchai initiated Thailand’s Private Sector Collective Action Coalition against Corruption (CAC) in 2010. There has been considerable discussion about “tea money” accounting for 30 per cent of the value of some state projects contracted to various companies. Ms Kobkarn said she thought the figure might be even higher.

“We can’t sit back and be the silent majority who look the other way,” she said. Ms Kobkarn held various management posts in the family’s joint venture, Toshiba Thailand Co Ltd before moving up the ladder to take on the role of chairperson. Active in business, education, art and a member of Thailand’s elite high society, she has won awards and ac-

colades for her contributions to art and community service. She is married to Pol Maj Gen Chonnasit Wattanavrangkul, who for a short time was Phuket police commander. TAT to refocus on European markets THE TOURISM AUTHORITY of Thailand (TAT) will embark on a number of initiatives to increase visits from European tourists in the fourth quarter of 2014. TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said that Europe is a key regional market. To encourage visitors, the TAT has created a “partner on demand” program that helps arrange package tours in addition to the familiarisation trips which are being organised. The number of forward

bookings from Germany is positive for August and the TAT Frankfurt Office expects a healthy number of trips by travellers from Germany over the winter season. The Eastern European market is enjoying increased growth, the TAT claims. Meanwhile, numbers of long-haul bookings from Southern Europe have risen by 15 per cent with Thailand being the top destination, according to Spanish online travel agency Atrapalo.

“Europe is Thailand’s second-largest source of tourists after Asia. We are very pleased to see that our key markets, the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Eastern Europe, are all registering strong growth in terms of arrivals,” Mr Thawatchai said. “We are committed to working further with these markets, and will continue to invest in our time, effort and budget to ensure that Thailand remains the top long-haul travel destination for European travellers.”

In 2013, Thailand welcomed 6.3 million travellers from Europe, representing an 11.60 per cent growth year-on-year. In recent years the TAT has tended to push for growth in new markets such as Russia and China. These, however – though providing large numbers – are now seen as providing tourists who do not add a great deal to the Thai economy, until the traditional European markets, whose tourists tend to be bigger spenders. HK overtakes Thailand as No 1 choice for Singapore ACCORDING TO DATA from the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index, Thailand, which has traditionally been the hottest outbound destination for Singapore travellers, has in the past six months been overtaken by Hong Kong. However, despite the recent political turmoil in Thailand, Bangkok is still a destination hotspot for Singaporean travellers – with the capital city only falling one spot to become the second most popular overseas destination. The findings also revealed vast opportunities across Thailand’s wide array of beach resorts, as tourists increasingly opt for beach getaways away from the capital. In fact, for the first time, Krabi (19th) entered the running as one of the Top 20 destinations abroad for travellers from Singapore. Tokyo experienced the biggest fall in the Top 10 list, taking a three-step tumble from third position to sixth. Taking its place was Taipei and Seoul, which rose one and two spots respectively to inch their way into the Top 5 destinations for travellers from Singapore. “Looking ahead, we expect Taipei and Seoul to maintain their positions as top overseas destinations for travellers from Singapore,” said Katherine Cole, Regional Director, ANZ & Singapore for the Hotels. com brand. The results also showed that Penang experienced the greatest jump within the list, leaping four spots to enter the Top 10. “Penang has definitely regained its appeal as an ideal destination for Singapore travellers over the past year,” said Ms Cole. The Hotel Price Index is based on bookings made on Hotels.com sites around the world. AsiaTravelTips

THE BIG LIST Tarnished tiaras Just because they can work the cat walk, look good in a bikini and hope for world peace, doesn’t mean they are angels.

Laura Zúñiga: This Mexican beauty won the Miss Hispanic America title in 2008. Just two months later, she was in handcuffs, along with seven others, for drug trafficking, racketeering, and weapons violations, among other charges. They had seven 9mm pistols, semiautomatic rifles, and over US$53,000 in cash. The Mexican media dubbed her “Miss Narco” because of connections to the drug underworld through her boyfriend, Angel Orlando Garcia Urquiza, a high-ranking leader of the Juárez Cartel. A movie loosely based on the scandal, Miss Bala (or Miss Bullet), was released in 2011. Vanessa Williams: As the first black woman to ever be crowned Miss America, Vanessa Williams was riding a wave of popularity in 1983. It all came crashing down eight months later when Penthouse Magazine published nude photos of Williams that were allegedly taken in 1982. The magazine sold a record six million copies but cost Williams her crown. “The potential harm to the pageant, and the deep division that a bitter fight may cause, has convinced me that I must relinquish my title,” she said at a news conference. Despite the scandal, she went on to have a successful acting career. Lindsey Evans: Miss Teen Louisiana USA Lindsey Evans was stripped of her crown with just two weeks left on her reign back in October 2008. The reason? The 18-year-old and her friends were arrested after skipping out on paying the bill at a restaurant. What made matters worse is that Evans returned to the restaurant because she forgot her purse. Police were already at the scene and found a small bag of marijuana in her bag. She was charged with theft and possession of marijuana. Que Van: The first runner-up at the Miss Vietnam World 2013 competition, Que Van, had to step down after it came out that she was fined the year before for assaulting another woman. According to the victim, she was kicked in the stomach and hit on the head and face with heels by Van and several other women outside of a bar in Hanoi. Van’s qualifications to enter the contest also came in to question since the rules only allow unmarried women to participate – Van is a divorcee with two children. Leona Gage: It only took one day for pageant oranisers to strip Leona Gage of her Miss USA title in 1957. Soon after she won the crown, it was revealed that Gage was a married mother of two. In addition, she was 18 years old, not 21 as she originally said. Later, she admitted that she was first married at the age of 14, but had it annulled a week later. Still, this could be considered the first beauty pageant scandal of all time.

Dethroned Myanmar beauty queen ‘runs off’ A Myan mar beaut y queen dethroned for alleged misconduct has absconded with her crown and free breast implants, the organiser said last Friday (August 29). May Myat Noe, winner of Miss Asia Pacific World Super Talent 2014, was flown to South Korea for preparation to become a K-pop star. But she was stripped of her crown for alleged dishonesty and bad behaviour, according to event spokesman David Kim in Seoul. “She lied a lot to us about many things. Our past queens also complained – because of her, their reputations will

He said that the organisation had paid US$10,000 (B320,000) for a breast enlargement operation to help her budding singing career. It also prepared two al-

bums for her to record and provided choreographers and accommodation as part of several years of planned training and investment to turn her into a K-pop star, Kim said. There was no immediate comment from the dethroned beauty queen, who was thought to have returned to her home country. As the former armed-ruled country opens up, Myanmar women are eyeing success in international beauty pageants. Last year a US-educated business graduate was selected as the first Miss Universe contestant to represent Myanmar in more than 50 years. AFP

Breaking: Hello Kitty not a cat, has never been HELLO KITTY IS NOT A cat, the company behind Japan’s global icon of cute insisted last week, despite an uproar from Internet users who spluttered: “But she’s got whiskers!” She is, in fact, human. The shocking revelation came to light when a Hawaiibased academic specialising in the epitome of kawaii (“cute” in Japanese) asked Sanrio to fact-check captions for an exhibition she was curating to mark the 40th anniversary of Hello Kitty. “She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature,” Christine Yano, an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii, told the Los Angeles Times. “It is a 100 per cent personified character,” a Sanrio spokesman told reporters in Tokyo. “The design takes the motif of a cat, but there is no element of a cat in Hello Kitty’s setting.”

Despite her whiskers and pointy ears, Kitty has her own pet – a “real” cat named Charmmy Kitty. It takes about six hours to complete the entire ensemable on top of his head and measures 644.6 metres when stretched out – the length of 13 Olympicsized swimming pools. “I don’t consider it to be a burden. I’m most happy when I wear it,” Mauni told

Britain’s Daily Mail. “I just keep putting on the cloth from top to bottom one layer at a time just like you would lay the stories of a building.” The devout Sikh has to get to his local temple on a motorcycle because of how large the turban is on his head .Still, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “On the rare times I don’t have my turban on I keep getting this feeling of being incomplete, that some part of me is missing,” he said.

A beautiful new beginning Tanyalak Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

At first, I was worried about how people would react to this technique, which isn’t so common, but eventually, I just let go and let the art lead without any worry.

Soon’s latest collection will officially debut in January, next year but many of his completed works are currently on display.

T

he end of one life is the beginning of new and better life. ’Tis the meaning of life according to a message of hope that local artist Soon Papan wants to spread using art as a delivery medium. In his previous collection, entitled Koei Mee Cheewit, (literally “Used to have life”) and exhibited at the end of last year, Soon explored the delicate and interdependent relationship between death and nature. Continuing on this, the imaginative Thai artist is working on a new collection entitled Krapong Dok Mai (the “Flower Dress”), which is inspired by the process of life that naturally follows death. Soon explained “Everything [about death] must be accepted, people can have new hope and embrace new and better things, and everyone can feel how joyful and hopeful it [life] is.” The new collection, which will include some 20 works when completed, features elements of water, flowers and femininity, reflecting everything wholesome about life. For example, one of his the paintings features a beautiful Thai woman adjourned in a flower patterned dress in a vivid, surreal nature-rich setting. The painting is entitled “Nongnapas number 2”, named after the artist’s partner, and fellow artist. The flowers, he explains, symbolize one of the beautiful processes of life in nature – for flowering is a preamble to the fruit bearing stage. A tree in the backdrop stands out with

of sand pouring from the heavens. With this, he is expressing the heavenly nature of sand and nature in general. Another interesting painting in the collection is “The Bucket”, which depicts

its golden fruits. Soon explains that gold is a universal symbol of value, and that the golden fruit symbolizes the value we should attribute to nature. As for the paintings main subject, he remarks, “I painted my girlfriend because she is close to me, so it was easy to paint her. And, [portraying] a particular woman can say something about her culture and country. When foreigners see my painting, they know immediately it’s Asian [art]. And they will know this too when they see this painting abroad.” In another painting, his girlfriend’s flower dress appears again, this time with an image

an image of rubber tapping. “I would like to present the life of Southern Thailand and Phuket, including images of fishing and rubber trees, which is part of the ‘original’ Phuket way of life.” Commenting on his unorthodox style of mixing acryilic and oil paints on the same canvas, Soon reveals his initial doubts. “At first, I was worried about how people would react to this technique, which isn’t so common [among local artists], but eventually, I just let go and let the art lead without any worry. Although the exhibition for his latest collection is not set to officially debut until January next year, Soon welcomes all art appreciators to view and critique his works, some complete, some in the works, at his gallery in Thalang. Bruno goes home after ten years at Soi Dog JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

I fell in love with him when Soi Dog posted pictures of dogs needing forever homes. I saw that he was an old boy and had been at Soi for a long time. It was as if his eyes were calling to me.

@thephuketnews

I

t’s been just under a decade since Bruno, a black male mixed-breed dog, entered the Soi Dog Foundation's doors. The tsunami had devastated the island just weeks before and Bruno was part of a large wave of dogs that suddenly found themselves homeless. The world has changed since Bruno was first brought to the shelter: James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful topped the charts, Miley Cyrus was set to become Hannah Montana, and the iPhone was still two years away. Throughout that time, Bruno remained at Soi Dog and saw hundreds of dogs – and volunteers – come and go. Now it’s his turn. This month, Bruno is headed to the United Kingdom after finally having been adopted by Lyn Sawkins, a Brit who says it was love at first sight. “I fell in love with him when Soi Dog posted pictures of dogs needing forever homes. I saw that he was an old boy and had been at Soi for a long time. It was as if his eyes were calling to me ... he chose me!” The affable pooch is just over 12 years old and gets along with other dogs easily, rarely showing hints of jealousy. If he wants attention, Bruno puts out his paw and charms whoever his near. This is one of the reason why Darren Benbrook, a Soi Dog volunteer,

considers Bruno just one of the guys. “For Bruno to go after nine-and-a-half years, it’s like a double-edged sword: you get to know the guy, want the best for this guy, he gets his home and it's kind of sad to see him go but so happy too because he deserves it,” Benbrook said.

“It does bring a tear to your eye, but we will get to see him on Facebook and how well he’s getting on in England,” he added. Though Bruno was adopted five months ago, it has taken time for the paperwork and flight arrangements to take place. Sawkins has not been to Thailand and the entire process is takes a bit of time. Despite this, Sawkins remains excited for the arrival of her new dog especially since he will have many new friends. “I already have five dogs of mixed breed. I have also just adopted a dog from Romania. He arrived a week ago and is settling in well. So Bruno will have lots of company if he wants it,” she said, “I love him dearly and can't wait to give him love and warmth and comfort for the rest of his days.”

A welcome back KIS

K

ajonkiet International School Phuket (KISP) would like to welcome all parents, children and teachers back to school for the 2014-2015 academic year. We hope everyone had a great summer holiday and are well rested to start this new and exciting year. This year KIS has lots of promising events planned at school. It is also nice to see that our school community has grown to 200 students, with many new students joining us this year. The KISP campus has also seen new decorations and inspiring quotes around the corridors from famous people in history and modern times. Feel free to have a walk around our campus to see the new additions in and around our school. Other good news is that new basketball hoops have been installed at the KISP Gymnasium. Staff and students are very excited to shoot some hoops. We all look forward to this new academic year and once again, welcome back!

The new decorations include inspirational quotes from role models.

Early Years improvements at BISP make for bright future

“A

well planned, open-ended learning environment is essential for a child’s development,” explains Karen Cornelius, Deputy Head at British International School, Phuket. She’s referring to the major design changes in the school’s two early year areas: Little Ducks and the Early Years Unit that incorporates Nursery and Reception. Over the recent summer holidays, workers came in to open up the Early Years Unit, changing it from six distinct classrooms to a large learning space where the children have access to a range of areas, including puzzles and block play, sand play, water play, investigation and home corner, and music. Little Ducks has been expanded to increase the flexibility and learning opportunities for children 18 months to three years. With more work scheduled in December, this space also provides a wide number of learning areas. Both the Early Years Unit and Little Ducks have new break and lunch spaces, with a focus on healthy eating habits. Since the change, “teachers have seen a significant increase in interaction between children, and much more independent and cooperative interaction and exploration of learning opportunities,” says Ms Cornelius, adding that teachers have also appreciated the increased collaboration within the more open environment. @thephuketnews

Evidence of the success in individual plans for each child can be seen in the ease of transition for Little Ducks moving into Nursery. “Since day one, there’s been a positive impact from the changes,” says Ms Cornelius, who adds, “The teachers are enjoying it as much as the children; they are problem-solving and coming up with the best ways to address each child’s learning needs.” For more information on Early Years, email Karen Cornelius: kcornelius@ bisphuket.ac.th

T

here is an innate beauty to the term “femininity”. When I think of feminine energy, it evokes the universal language of love and the many ways in which we can express it. The ability to nurture, the power of intuition, the expression of emotion and receptiveness to the thoughts and feelings of those around us. It is the basis of creativity and the foundation of passion. Over time, the symbols of masculinity have had more value placed upon them, and this is not without merit. With masculine energy comes concentration,

The Pioneer Plaque is a gold-anodized aluminum plaque that was installed on the Pioneer 10 and 11 (launched in 1972 and 1973, respectively) spacecrafts, containing a message about human life on earth, intended for extraterrestrial life and currently travelling some 10 billion miles away from our solar system.

accomplishment, analytical skills and the ability to fragment and compartmentalize in order to achieve. Feminists have battled long and hard to have equal rights, but somewhere along the way the true meaning of being a woman appears to have been lost. We have rejected our feminine traits, in a quest for the “success” characteristics of the masculine. Life itself could certainly be likened to the endless pursuit of goals and outcomes, whether it be within career, relationships or personal development – we want to win, but the goalposts seem to be constantly changing. Is it commercial success, a happy family, esteemed academia, increased prosperity that defines us as people? Victory comes in many forms, but more often than not, is defined by masculine qualities. A simplified definition of the root of masculine energy is “strength” whereas feminine energy is steeped in “goodness”. Have women done themselves the ultimate disservice by repressing their femininity in order to “get ahead”? Some say that the current imbalance of power in the world is partially attributed to a sad series of gender dysmorphic traits, women have become unnaturally aggressive, and men are becoming more effeminate. There are others who suggest that women are their own worst enemies – tearing each other to shreds in the workplace, thereby greatly contributing to the fact that we are still streets behind in earning potential and gender inequality is perpetuated by our poor attitude to one another. What if we simply started to play on our strengths, and use them not only to help restore some balance (males and females need masculine and feminine traits), but also to help us get ahead in all facets of our being. I think that Marylin Monroe put it best, when she said “I don’t mind liv-

A popular war-time poster of Geraldine Doyle (19242010), at age 17, promoting ‘strength’ among the females, who’d built and powered the American industrial war machine during the second world war. ing in a man’s world, as long as I can be a woman in it!” Herein lies a valuable point. It is time for women to empower their “shakti” energy again and become at one with the world. When we accept our feminine energy, we are in the ultimate place of gentle power – walking a path of love and peace, and experiencing great satisfaction and gratitude toward everything around us. Evoking it is easy – more often than not, it is having the self-esteem and pride not to reject that which flows naturally and comes pouring out from within. Being honest and truthful with ourselves can only result in a truer sense of identity, and there is nothing more powerful than the quiet confidence that comes with being truly proud of thyself. Taking time out to reflect and meditate, and becoming one with ourselves and the earth gently evokes the divine goddess within. Rediscovering our femininity through movement and dance is another powerful way to shift “shakti”. In rediscovering ourselves, we are able to reconnect with the magic and wonder around us, powerfully restoring balance and equilibrium. Invest in your inner world, and you will be utterly amazed at the changes that abound.

Watch out for Pink Eye

he D epa r t ment of Disease Control has wa r ned the public against sharing personal items and having any direct contact with an individual suspected to be infected by conjunctivitis, a condition better known as “Pink Eye”. Sopon Mekthon, the Director General of the Department of Disease Control has warned of an increased number of conjunctivitis cases, a highly contagious eye disease that’s prevalent during the rainy season. Health centers, clinics and hospitals in the country are currently seeing an increase

Not all pink-eyed people you meet in Phuket are contagious. in the number of cases. The department said that it had recorded some 115,255 cases of conjunctivitis nationwide from January to August. Viral conjunctivitis is caused by the same virus that causes the common cold and is also very contagious. A watery mucous is the common discharge of this form of conjunctivitis. Although the eye disease is not a public health hazard and usually heals within a few days, people staying in crowded areas should take precautions.

Factors are unhygienic conditions and sharing personal items and people not washing their hands. Infected individuals pass the infection on to other people, especially if they share the same bed and pillows, or when they touch another person, as when shaking hands. The department has also issued warnings against some epidemics spread by contaminated water. The public should be extra cautious during the rainy season, he asserted. NNT thephuketnews

Asia’s hub of spas and wellness

I

n a drive to position the kingdom as the Spa Hub of ASEAN, the Thai Spa Association is pulling out all stops for the upcoming “World Spa & Well-being Convention 2014”, scheduled from September 18-20 at the IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Centre in the north of Bangkok. Organizers are calling the event, which for the first time will take place simultaneously with Beyond Beauty ASEAN-Bangkok 2014 – ASEAN’s premier trade show for comprehensive health and beauty products – the “Biggest Spa & Well-being Event in ASEAN”, and with good reason. Never before has such an event been held in such a spacious area, spanning some 20,000 square metres, to offer hundreds of brands to consumers from throughout the globe. The combined event will gather over 400 brands of beauty products and services from around the world. The products and services will fall into the four categories of: 1) beauty products and cosmetics, 2) comprehensive spa and health products and services, 3) herbs and health products and 4) hair and nail care products. Andrew Jacka, Chairman, World Spa & Well-being Convention Organising Committee, says the Thai Spa Association and the Department of International Trade Promotion will organize the World Spa & Well-being Convention 2014 (WSWC2014) as the biggest spa & well-being event of ASEAN with the concept of “by Hand, through Head, with Heart” to promote spa products and services, upgrade the standard of Thai spa business and stimulate interesting innovations in this industry. WSWC2014 will consist of a trade show as well as World Spa & Well-being Congress (WSWC Congress 2014), Global Wellness Tourism Workshop (GWTW2014), Thailand Hot Spring Forum (THSF2014), Thailand Spa & Wellbeing Awards (TSWA2014). The event is expected to attract 15,000 visitors, 50 per cent higher than the number of visitors to last year’s event. It is also expected to draw more than 400 delegates, especially those from hotels, spas, resorts, beauty and health centres, beauty schools, fitness centres and consultancies among others. The global spa market is growing impressively and yet there is is considerable room for expansion. industry in Thailand during coming months, with an emphasis on the development and design of spa products, participation in quality training activities by spa operators in Thailand for elevation of their standards, as well as expansion into the international market by quality Thai spa players. The grand purpose is to promote wellness entrepreneurship by providing a comprehensive platform for the local industry to blossom into international expansion.

ties for growth. Closer to home, Myanmar is also an emerging market. Tourism is down at the moment, but will is expected to recover within a year or two 12 months and new spas will by then be ready to provide warm welcomes for these anticiapted tourist arrivals. Islands in the Caribbean region and Oceania are also developing their spa businesses and such facilities are mushrooming in those parts of the world. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are also emerging spa markets. And industry-insiders believe that resorts and spas in Vietnam will become tough competitors of those in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand within in a few years. Free trade in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will noticeably accelerate the growth of spa business. However, spa operators must improve their capabilities to cope with competition, in order to guarantee their strong and sustainable growth. They must develop their products and services to meet the ISO Wellness Spa Services Standard and the ASEAN Spa Service Standard. Nevertheless the value of the Thai spa market is likely to grow continuously especially after the formation of the AEC in 2015 due to three main factors. Firstly the number of middle-class people is increasing. Secondly the number of the elderly is rising. People aged more than 60 are expected to number two billion and form one-third of the global population in 2050. Thirdly megacities are spreading worldwide and thus people will increasingly demand “natural” resort areas. “World Spa & Well-being Convention 2014 is a world-class event and a springboard for stronger networking between Asia and the rest of the world, and a chance for for Thailand to become the beauty hub of ASEAN especially in the spa business where Thailand is one of the most outstanding players in the world,” Krod Rojanastien, President of the Thai Spa Association, said. Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, Director General, Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), said that currently Thailand has a strategy to develop the country to become a wellness hub

of Asia. Part of this plan is to encourage the medical industry to play a key role in Thailand’s economic growth. In this connection, Thai traders, especially those in spa industry, have very strong potential as well as a unique identity, and are already well accepted in the international marketplace. As a result, the policy to encourage the wellness business and the beauty

A lifetime of rosy futures

Alasdair Forbes execeditor@classactmedia.co.th

It’s the atmosphere that makes La Vie en Rose special, the atmosphere created by the three partners. They seem to know averyone who comes in.

H

ere’s a combination for you: Fine food, wine to match, a view of expensive yachts bobbing in the water, and three of the smartest, sexiest women you could hope to meet putting it all together. In a nutshell, that’s La Vie en Rose French restaurant. The restaurant was opened in November last year by Phuket native Pattiya “Pat” Bijlsma, mainly because she just loves cooking, especially after she took the Cordon Bleu course in Paris. Not that pat does all the cooking. For that she hired a man of few words but many skills, Suradesh “Toh” Pornsawad and his wife. Toh was for 15 years the chef at Chez Papa in Dibuk Rd, so he knows his oignons. She also hired wait staff, six to eight in the high season, and four in the low. To that crew she added, every Friday, Japanese chanteuse Mari Okawa, backed by Filipino muso Jeffrey Sevilla, to sing jazz favourites and classics such

as, yes, Edith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose. Feeling a little rushed off her feet, she turned to two old friends. She was at school in Phuket with Narissa “Fah” Moehring, and at university with Yala-born Kao Thongdee. Both agree that they didn’t have to think twice before becoming partners with Pat. So now Pat looks after the restaurant and the kitchen, Fah handles marketing and Kao watches the money. The menu contains classics such as bouillabaisse, escargots, salade Niçoise, boeuf Bourguignon, and ratatouille, but for the evening, the three ladies choose a tasting menu to give an idea of what else the chef can do. We start with avocado saumon fumé, a classic combination that’s very hard to get wrong; foie gras with apple sauce, seared just right; and scallops with mushroom sauce. All quite delightful, especially when accompanied by the house rosé from Villa Santi. We follow up with lamb shank (“We get the most praise for that,” Pat says) and duck confit with mushroom sauce. The meal is accompanied by delicious bread made in-house, and washed down with a Cantavida Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. That’s two good wines in a row. Pat explains that she asked supplier BB&B what Trisara buys a lot of, and then told them, “We’ll have that.” Simple. Now, of course, there has to be dessert – what French evening meal is complete without? In this case classic crêpes Suzettes and chocolate fondant. Oh yes. The food’s excellent, and the prices are right (for example, the avocado and salmon is B240 and the huge chunk of lamb shank is B490).

But it’s the atmosphere that makes La Vie en Rose special, the atmosphere created by the three partners. They’re just such fun. They seem to know everyone who comes in. Maybe they don’t actually know them, but the welcome is so warm that it seems as if they do. Pat, Fah and Kao fizz with energy and warmth. “We want people to feel like they’re at home,” says Fah. They’re also fizzing with ideas. For example, Pat plans to start weekly markets along the boardwalk of the marina. These would be exclusively French affairs, under the banner Marché de Lagoon. The trio are also keen to help charities; La Vie en Rose was recently the venue for a fundraiser staged by the local band Elephant in the Room. The restaurant is currently open from 10am to 11pm every day but when the high season arrives, breakfast will be added, extending opening times from 8am to 11pm. Coffee and baguette or criossants by the water. What could be better? La Vie en Rose is on the boardwalk of Boat Lagoon in Koh Kaew. To book call 076 238 943 or 094 596 6111, or email lavieenrose.phuket@gmail.com. There is a website at http://www.lavieenroserestaurant.com/ and a facebook page at Facebook.com/LaVieEnRoseRestaurant

Uncovering Phi Phi’s gems

Wandering off the beaten path of Krabi’s famed island Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

T

he largest of the six Phi Phi Islands, Phi Phi Don is the only island that is inhabited – and it certainly has plenty to offer. Many tourists travel to Phi Phi and experience the laid-back attitude, narrow streets with hordes of bikes on every corner

you turn. Many have come and gone, but there are a few select individuals who choose to rest down their bags and set up home on this paradise island – and I count myself lucky to have been one of them. For whatever reason someone chooses to stay long-term, whether it’s for a dive course or simply an opportunity to experience something different, Phi Phi is a magical place to live. At first I wasn’t so sure I could hack living on a secluded island, worrying that I might develop cabin fever. But I soon found myself slipping into the easy island life and next thing I knew, my three months were up. While Koh Phi Phi is a popular holiday destination, experiencing the place as an expat is truly enriching. The locals become your friends, the food becomes cheaper, the cocktails get discounted, your knowledge on Thailand gets stronger and you find yourself developing your very own little family. Exploring the amazing food offerings has been one highlight. One hidden gem in the local village is Orange Place. If you’re looking for authentic flavoursome

The hidden gem, Orange Place, offers an array of local dishes, including curries such as Massaman and Penang as well as many other delicious treats, all at a reasonably cheap price.

Thai food then look no further. The portions are pretty decent and the curries are divine – the Massaman curry is a favourite. The restaurant is literally set up with basic white plastic chairs and tables, but don’t let the scene fool you. There’s even a monkey that hangs around while you eat! (Don’t worry, it won’t hurt you). On the same muddy road is another restaurant which both myself and the other “locals” frequent. It’s known simply as the “Burmese place”. An enticing mix of Thai and Indian with an exuisite spicy kick, the food is absolutely phenomenal. From curries, to salads, to soups, you really are spoilt for choice. The famous chicken curry is my usual, which also comes with a plate of rice, lentil soup, mix of veggies and a mango salad. And all for only B80! Not only that, but the owner is so welcoming, you feel like you’re having dinner with your uncle. (I suggest not to have it before a night on the town/beach). Speaking of the beach, I’m sure everyone has seen a fireshow or two, but as well as the famous party scene that comes alive everynight, there are also a few cool bars which are perfect for relaxing with a cocktail. Sunset Bar is right at the top end of the beach, placed slightly above ground so that it overlooks the rest of the beach nightlife. It’s surrounded by trees giving it a tropical atmosphere and tribal beats are usually playing in the background, the perfect atmosphere to soak in a heavenly sunset. Kongsiam is a new live music bar that recently opened and is proving quite popular with the expats. After being so successful in Patong, the friendly half-Thai owner opened up this small, intimate branch. The Thai band sing a selection of English songs, a hit with the foreign clientale. Diving in the Andaman Sea is also a popular activity, but being able to dive while living as an expat made it all the more special. I made friends with many of the instructors, which gave me the confidence I needed for my first ever dive. The marine life is breathtaking, there’s anything from small nemos

to whale sharks. Some of the divers have swam with turtles and at least 20 sharks! Not only did I get to experience the bright, colourful, magical sea life that exists within the deep waters of the Andaman Sea, but it was also great to be able to do so with loads of my friends around me. Other gems less known about on the mass tourism circuit are the beautiful sandy beaches on the other side of the island. Most people just lay on the sand of the “party beach” but the water isn’t so clean there. Both “Nice beach” and “Long beach” however feature the picturesque scenes you see on the post cards – white soft sands and clear pristine waters. Great for snorkelling and swimming. Nice beach is a little easier to get to, seeing it as it’s near the pier but Long beach either requires a 40 minute trek through the woods (not ideal on a hangover) or a five minute trip on a long tail boat, costing only B100 per person. All in all, I believe there was something quite special about waking up to

the sound of the exotic wildlife, walking around with no shoes on, getting a fruit shake everyday, pondering over the most important questions of the day (like what to wear or what to have for lunch) and saying hello to absolutely everybody on the street – that it makes a walk which should take around five minutes, actually take around 30. And all the while knowing that, during that time, however long one chooses it to be, Koh Phi Phi is your home.

Lending a sporting hand in Rawai JP Mestanza editor3@classactmedia.co.th

We mainly did this to keep them in sports, keep them doing some exercise, and keep them away from the dangers on the street

The Mushy Peas are showing how football is more than just a sport or game – it’s an opportunity for poor youth to be active and safe.

D

espite the amount of tremendous sports facilities on the island, there are still groups in Phuket that have difficulty finding something as small as an inflatable football. In the sea gypsy village in Rawai, an area known for great seafood and beautiful sunsets, kids run through muddy (and sometimes, flooded) waters just to score a goal while others just sit and watch. This is one of the reasons the Mushy Peas, the Rawai-based supporters club of Phuket FC, donated dozens of sports equipment to the village. A caretaker will make sure the equipment will be distributed in a central location and available for children all over the area. “We mainly did this to keep them in sports, keep them doing some exercise, and keep them away from the dangers on the street,” said Richie Dell of the Mushy Peas. The group regularly raises money through the “Mushy Peas Fund” to benefit a local kids charity. Back in April, the group partnered with Phuket FC and G.O.M.S. (Grumpy Old Men Society) to hold a football clinic for underprivileged Burmese children at the team’s training facilities, and last week donated B18,000 worth of sports equipment to Wat Sawang Arom School in Rawai. This time, as Dell explains, the aim was to help a group closer to home. “Everyone here is committed to Rawai so everyone wants to give something back to Rawai,” he said. “All these kids go to the local temple school and there’s not a lot of money

down here but apparently the sea gypsy teams are the best teams in Rawai, at all age groups.” Dozens of footballs, takraw balls, jump ropes, frisbies, and other equipment were donated to the village. Football goalposts were even erected so the children – and perhaps their parents – could play. In addition, Phuket FC president Pariyawit “Benz” Achariyachai donated just un-

der 100 tickets to the Thailand vs Myanmar match on August 31 at Surakul Stadium, for both Burmese and sea gypsy children. The Mushy Peas, meanwhile, plan to continue to raise money and help local kids whenever they can. “This fund is only going to get bigger each month,” Dell said. “We’d like to grow it gradually and try to cover as many good causes in Rawai as we can.”

epresentatives from FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) were in Phuket last week as part of a two-day visit to discuss community and sports development matters with local authorities. Mr David Borja, Senior Manager of FIFA’s Development Programmes Asia, along with Mr Domeka Garamendi, FIFA Development Officer from the organization’s Development Office in Kuala Lumpur, were welcomed at Phuket International Airport by Phuket FC Vice President and Kata Group executive, Mr Eam Thavornwongvongse, as well as Dr Kasom Chanawongse from the Executive Board of the Football Association of Thailand, and Mr Paitoon Chutimakornkul, President of Siam Sport Syndicate Pcl. Nga, taking in impoverished pupils – from both Buddhist and Muslim backgrounds – from off the streets, teaching them “Life Skills” using the beautiful game of football as a medium. His story was recently published in the FIFA Weekly online magazine. In addition to organizing and supporting football competitions throughout the world, the supreme governing body of the most popular sport also supports various social responsibility and sports development programmes worldwide. Under its Goal Programme, between 2003 and 2010, FIFA contributed no less than US$1.8 million (B57.5 million) to Thailand, for various projects at the national technical centre in Bangkok. Here in Phuket, the federation donated just over US$1 million to construct the Tsunami Memorial Football Centre, which was inaugurated on September 15, 2009. The centre, located off Sakdidet Rd en route to Cape Panwa, was the next stop of the tour. “As the centre is approaching its five year anniversary, we’ve come to inspect the facilities, and discuss with local officials various matters – how it’s being used, its overheads and things it needs,” Mr Borja told The Phuket News during closed-door talks in the 2nd floor meeting room.

From left, Domeka Garamendi of FIFA, Dr Kasom Chanawongse of FAT, David Borja of FIFA and Eam Thavornwongvongse of Phuket FC.

The waterlogged pitch will get renovated with funds from the programme. “For one, we can see that the pitch will definitely need to be renovated soon,” he added, as local youth from the Sansiri Academy trained on a muddy and waterlogged pitch. In addition to hosting training sessions for local football academies, the centre has also been used for training by Phuket FC, youth football squads from various local schools, and has even been

utilized to host youth drug rehabilitation programmes in conjunction with the local government. “It’s good to see the centre is being used to benefit the local community … With football, people the world over are mostly concerned with scandals and superstars, but there is another, more important side to the game, and that’s why we’re really here,” he said.

Japan firm showcases ‘touchable’ 3D technology

T

echnology that generates touchable 3D imagery was unveiled in Japan last week, with its developers saying users could pull and push objects that are not really there. Know-how that could improve a gaming experience, or allow someone to physically shape objects that exist only on a computer, will soon be available to buy, said Miraisens, a high-tech firm based outside Tokyo. “Touching is an important part of human communication but virtual reality has until now been lacking it,” its chief executive Natsuo Koda told a press conference. “It works by fooling the brain, blending the images the eye is seeing with different patterns of vibration created by a small device on the fingertip,” said Norio Nakamura, chief technical

officer at the firm. Billing the technology as a world first, plans include commercialising the product through applications in electronics and the services industry since the system can be built into devices in the shape of coins, sticks or pens, amongst others. For example, if built into a game controller, it could be used to give a sense of resistance in response to certain actions within the game, they said. It could also be used to make up complicated data that could be fed into a 3D printer, allowing a child to make a virtual dinosaur model and then watch it come into existence. Other applications could include help for doctors carrying out surgery remotely, or navigation assistance in canes used by visually impaired people. AFP

he FBI and Apple were urgently investigating Monday (September 1) after an apparent massive hack of a cloud data service unleashed a torrent of intimate pictures of dozens of celebrities across the Internet. Anonymous posters to online message boards boasted of having nude images of scores of female stars including Oscarwinner Jennifer Lawrence, top model Kate Upton, singer Avril Lavigne, and United States soccer star Hope Solo, among others. Reports suggested hackers had “ripped” private images from Apple’s iCloud online data storage, a potentially embarrassing – and damaging – breach for the California tech giant. “We take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris, the Re/code website reported. The FBI has also joined the hunt, other US reports said. “The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter,” The Los Angeles Times quoted Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI in Los Angeles, as saying. “Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time,” she added. By late Sunday, Twitter had begun suspending accounts that linked to the Lawrence photos, tech news site Mashable reported. Tech news site The Next Web reported what it said was evidence that hackers had found a weakness in Apple’s “Find my iPhone” service, an app

that tracks lost or stolen handsets. Apple has patched the alleged hole, the report said, but not before news of it spread in the hacker community, perhaps allowing unscrupulous strangers to access private online data. But other reports suggested that the pictures could have been collated from multiple sources, perhaps not including iCloud at all, and may have been gathered over several years. The scale of the hack, and the targeting of women in the public eye, quickly revived the debate on social media about privacy concerns and about misogyny on the Internet. The scandal also posed a public relations challenge to tech companies, who have been marketing online storage like iCloud, DropBox or GoogleDrive as a safe haven for users’ private data. Several popular tech blogs marked the story by providing advice on storing private data safely, by using advanced encryption and two-step password identification or by keeping it offline. AFP

Thai trio get lucky at FIFA tournament

O

ver one hundred people packed the Times Square mall in Seoul, South Korea to watch a group of three Thai gamers take home the title in the FIFA Online 3 Spearhead Invitational 2014 last Saturday (August 30). The three-day tournament pit teams of three, each squad from a different country in Asia. In addition to Thailand, the teams included from South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Singapore, and Indonesia. Teinvithit Srinam, Krissada Theeruttinunt, and Nutthakorn Boonritphakdee split a prize of US$50,000 (B1.6 million) for their win in the finals over hometown boys South Korea. The Thai team had lost two matches on their way to the playoff stages (against Vietnam and South Korea). Still, they were able to avenge both losses to win the tournament. thephuketnews

IN BRIEF Scorsese to direct Ramones film

LUCY

Great start for hot mess FILM REVIEW JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

By the end of the film, Lucy falls victim to a thin plot and higher ambitions. sings on the history and role of human existence, betrays it’s actionfilm beginning.

I

t’s difficult to trash a movie that starts out with one of the (for lack of a better word) coolest scenes since the opening of the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale. But the premise of Lucy is, while a great one on paper, is still a bit off with too much focus given to the action and not enough on actual story structure. Walking out of the theater, one could not help but feel as though director Luc Besson – who created one of my favourite films in Léon: The Professional – wrote the script based off of notes written on a napkin while thinking of the greatest things he could put in a film. Besson gave these notes a name and Lucy is what we got. The film revolves around 25-year-old Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), an American living in Taiwan who is eventually tricked into becoming a drug mule by her boyfriend. When things go wrong, a drug lord named Mr Jang orders bags of a special new drug – dubbed CPH4 – to be sewn into her abdomen. The same thing happens to three other people. When one of Mr Jang’s henchman kicks Lucy in the stomach, the bag breaks and the drug is released into her system. As a reuslt, she begins acquiring increasingly powerful and enhanced physical and mental capabilities, telepathy, telekinesis, mental time

travel, and she can choose not to feel pain or other discomforts, in addition to other special abilities. Over time, these powers grow and, with the help of a local police captain and a scientist, she sets out to find the other three people with the drug and capture Mr Jang. My problem with this film is this: as the film goes on, her powers grow and she becomes devoid of emotions. Eventually, Lucy gets to the point where she cannot feel pain and becomes God-like, something that is difficult for the audience to have a vested interest in since she can now go and do whatever she wants with no real threat. There are scenes in the film where Besson’s avant-garde nature gets the better of him but are then put aside. This is jarring to the audience since the tone changes over time, and not in a good way. By the end of the film, Lucy falls victim to a thin plot and higher ambitions. Musings on the history and role of human existence, in addition to almost unfathomable mutations, betrays it’s action-film beginning. While Johannson nails her role as a constantly evolving femme-fatale, the whole thing devolves into a hot mess of drugs, action, and existentialism.

The story of the seminal New York City punk band The Ramones will hit the big screen with legendary director Martin Scorsese attached to lead the project. According to Billboard, the film is scheduled for a 2016 release to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the band’s debut album. The biopic is just one of many projects that will feature The Ramones, in addition to a book, documentary, and theatrical play. Scorsese will somehow have to find time between his Frank Sinatra biopic, a documentary on Bill Clinton, a 1970s rock’n’roll drama for HBO, and his Shutter Island-inspired TV series.

Charlie Hunnnam is King Arthur

Sons of Anarchy star Charlie hunnam has been tapped to portray the title character in the upcoming Guy ritchie film Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur. Reports say Warner Bros. Studios is looking to spawn a six-film franchise with Ritchie and producer Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow) set to lead the series. British actor Idris Elba has already been announced as co-star. The film is scheduled for a July 2015 release date.

‘Inferno’: lights, camera, action ...

The Da Vinci Code author, Dan Brown, will have the third part of his Robert Langdon book series hit the big screen when Inferno drops in 2016. Ron Howard returns to direct the film, the third after Da Vinci and Angels and Demons, along with Tom Hanks who will reprise the role of the Harvard professor. The story is influenced by the first book of Dante’s epic, Divina Comedia. Production on the film is set to begin in April 2015.

BKK gets ready for Miami-style EDM

hailand, get ready to let loose and electrify your groove – debuting in the kingdom at the end of the month will be a much anticipated Miamistyle electronic dance music (EDM) event. Dubbed “Road To Ultra Thailand”, the ultimate dance music experience is being brought to the Thai capital by Samsung Galaxy as part of an unprecedented world tour to promote the EDM “event of events”. Ultra Worldwide is the global brand of the World’s Premier Electronic Music event Ultra Music Festival. The Ultra brand was founded in 1997 by Executive Producer, President & CEO Russell Faibisch, who started producing electronic music events in Florida, which led to the inaugural Ultra Music Festival in 1999 on the sands of Miami Beach. The internationally renowned festival, which has taken place every March since its inception, celebrated its 16th anniversary from March 28-30, 2014 by bringing over 165,000 music enthusiasts to the sold out

waterfront event in the heart of the City of Miami. Choosing to follow a unique, creative vision and a wholly organic growth focused around a true love for music among artists and fans alike, Ultra Worldwide is not only the world’s biggest and most successful remaining independent electronic music festival brand, it is now the most international of any festival brand in the world by far. Over the past 16 years, literally thousands of the world’s most iconic DJs, producers and live acts have mesmerized audiences with awe-inspiring sets at Ultra festivals in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Ibiza, South Korea, Japan, Colombia, Chile, Taiwan, South Africa, and of course Miami. Each and every new global edition has been founded on the same successful formula that has been perfected over 16 years in Miami, combining the most diverse electronic talent with the most technologically advanced, large scale festival productions in the world. The 18-year-old Dutch breakthrough Martin Garrix will be one of the four headliners performing at this epic debut event, along with Stockholm-born Alessandro Lindblad Alesso, who will set the floor

on fire for the first time in Bangkok with his pulsating progressive set. EDM fans look forward to Willem van Hanegem and Wardt van der Harst, collectively known as W&W, who will bring their uplifting and melodic elements of trance with the raw intensity of electro and progressiveness of house. And what Ultra EDM party would it be without one of the most defining figures in house music, the famous Fedde Le Grand, who certainly won’t fail to please the BKK crowd. In addition, local electronic artists, including DJ Sunzone, Oatawa, Kolor One and Funky Gangster will provide musical support for this much-awaited festival. Samsung Galaxy presents Road To Ultra Thailand will take place on Friday, September 26, 2014, from 5pm onwards at Hall 106, Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center. Tickets are B2,500 and B3,300. Pre-event tickets are available at Amiando.com/ultra2014 and Thaiticketmajor.com Limited Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event. Age restriction: age 20 years and over. Valid IDs or passports are required for entry. For more information, visit roadtoultra. com/thailand thephuketnews

Thailand destroys Myanmar in 8-1 win FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

n the first of three warm-up matches ahead of the Asian Games later this month, the Thailand national team took Myanmar to the cleaners with an extraordinary goalfest that yielded the home team a 8-1 victory at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town last Sunday (August 31). In front of over 10,000 fans – many of whom seemed to be cheering more for the visiting Myanmar team – the Thai team showcased their scoring prowess early, often and with verve. Chanathip Songkrasin, the 20-year-old Thai phenom, scored one of the team’s goals, assisted in three others and won “Man of the Match” honours. Six other Thai players were on target, including Charyl Chappuis twice, Nurul Sriyamkem, Naruebodin Weerawatnodom, Krirkrit Taweekarn, Pinyo Innpinit and Chananan Pombupha. Despite the stunning win, coach Head Coach Kiatisak “Zico” Senamuang maintains that his men still have a lot of room for improvement. “Our players are hungry

I

to play for the national team and looking forward to the Asian Games,’’ Kiatisak said. “They gave their all and wanted to win the match and places in the starting line-up. But there are many points that they have to improve. I believe that after the warm-up matches, we will become better.’’ The Thai team, which is made up of almost the entire U-23 squad with the exception of two players, hit the field this past Wednesday (September 3) against Phuket FC at Surakul Stadium. The final warm-up match will take place on Sunday (September 7) against Qatar,

also at Surakul Stadium at 6:30pm. Tickets for both matches are B200 and available at the

stadium box office. This article was written with information from Bangkok Post.

Deadlock: Phuket FC and Phitsanulok draw 1-1 FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

ANOTHER GAME AND another draw for Phuket FC as they came out of their match against Yamaha League-1 bottom-dwellers SYM Phitsanulok FC with a 1-1 tie last Saturday (August 30). Phitsanulok took the lead in the 15th minute when Mat Parems slipped one into the back of the net. As he’s done several times this season, Phuket defender Yusuke Sato scored the equaliser during extra time in the first half. Throughout the second half, Phitsanulok were determined to come away with three points but the Ronins’ defense held up to make sure both teams each had one point. Though Phuket gained

one point, the team still fell one spot in the standings and are now sitting in 14th place (33 points) while Phitsanulok remain in 16th place (24 points), firmly in the relegation zone. Phuket’s next match up took place this past Wednesday (September 3) against the Thailand national team in a warm-up for the upcoming Asian Games in South Korea. T h e n e x t Ya m a h a League-1 match will place this Saturday (September 6) against striker Kendall Jagdeosingh’s former club Trat FC at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town, kick off is set for 6:30pm. Laguna, ICC impress as T20 playoffs approach CRICKET Dave Thomas editor2@classactmedia.co.th

W

ith the Outrigger Twenty20 Cricket finals only weeks away, four teams were still in contention for the final three spots before last Sunday’s (August 31) round 9 matchups at the Alan Cooke Ground in Thalang.

ICC secure second

With the absence of Anthony Dupont and a season ending injury to Justin Thomatos, Thalang’s batting order was exposed and it wasn’t long before ICC had their first wicket. Andrew McMillan and Donovan Cowell put on 40 runs until the latter was out just before the break with the scoreboard at 57/2. By the 14th over Thalang’s batsmen took more risk but it came at the cost of 4 wickets

Thai youth cricketer, Paan, bowling for Thalang Cricket Team. Photo: Michael Way in 3 overs for just 15 runs. At 96/6 Thai youth Paan combined with Martin Hill to add another 19 runs off the last few overs. But ICC bowlers restricted Thalang to just 3 boundaries and only 115/7 from their 20 overs. Prashant Shetgaonker finished with the neat figures of 2/23 from his 4 overs. After the break, Thalang fielders kept the ICC batsmen out in the heat with missed run out chances and miss-fields marring the first

5 overs of play and helped ICC along to 30/1. Thalang toiled away but Junaid Mohammad’s 36 runs had set up ICC’s innings until he was caught on the fence in the 16th over. Ravi Naik and Darshan Vaiganker made light work of the next 20 runs and, in the last over Vaiganker waited found the boundary rope, securing ICC 2nd place on the table and sending his team into the Outrigger Twenty20 semi final.

Laguna press for playoffs

Coming off two straight wins, Laguna were looking to secure a playoff berth as the Village were searching for an elusive first win. Laguna elected to bat first and sent out Roly Cooper and Damian Clowes. Their great start ended when Clowes (9) was clean bowled by Sam Ali in the 3rd over. Imran Khan then joined Cooper for a 35 run partnership. But Ali trapped Khan (13) lbw

with the score on 52-2 in the 7th over. Stuart Reading was now up just as Cooper got tied down due to tight bowling. Reading hit 43 (off 23 balls) for a 65 run partnership until Cooper was dismissed lbw for 38 in the 16th over with Laguna 117-4. Reading soon fell also. After the break, the Village was in trouble as opener Kevin Quilty (0) was clean bowled on the first ball. Captain Martin Platts and partner Aneel (6) struggled with the latter

caught behind in the 6th over with the score on 20-2. After the break, Divan Mydeen (5) was clean bowled by Thai youngster Pan in the 12th over with the score 43-4. Sam Ali (18) was then run out only 5 balls later. Mark Ashman (10) hit well but was out in 16th over with the score on 67-7. Harvey Nolan (10 not out) and Andy Ghadge (3 not out) managed to survive the remaining overs to bring the innings total to 85-7 after their 20 overs. The win puts Lagun in 3rd place on the table. Next matches take place Sunday (September 7) at the Alan Cooke Ground with Thalang vs Village at 10 and Laguna vs Bondi Bar Bashers at 2pm. The Pooh Stance SURF SPOT Tim Campbell info@surf-sup.asia

“DADDY DADDY THAT surfer looks like they’re doing a number two.” Have you ever seen a surfer that when they are standing on a surf board they look hunched over like something heavy is resting on their back and their bottom is sticking out saying hello. This is known as the “pooh stance” and a lot of surfers don’t realise they even do it until someone points it out or they see themselves on video. While most surfers go through this phase even for a little while, it’s not a stance you want to get use to. Generally, surfers in this stance have their feet and knees facing in the opposite directions, which in turn makes their bottom stick out. What you are aiming to do is have both your knees bent facing in the same direction or either your front or back @thephuketnews

leg bent with your hips bent forwarded or backwards. This will give you a better looking stance as well as setting you up in a better position to complete your turns. Tim’s Tip: Practice jumping up on the beach until your feet position is correct. Happy Surfing! Tim Campbell www.surf-sup.asia

Man Utd, Falcao lead Euro transfer frenzy FOOTBALL

M

anchester United made a sensational double swoop on transfer deadline day to sign Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco and Holland international Daley Blind from Ajax. Blind’s arrival, in a £14 million (B739 million) transfer, was expected, but the signing of prolific 28-year-old frontman Falcao was a major coup for the ailing English giants. United are reported to have agreed to pay Monaco a fee of around €10 million ($13.1 million) to secure Falcao’s services for the season, with an option to make the deal permanent for €55 million. Falcao, who missed the World Cup with a serious knee injury, was whisked into United’s Carrington training ground to undergo a medical examination on Monday evening (September 1). United paid a British-record £59.7 million to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid last week and their spending spree continued with the capture of Blind. The 24-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, starred as the Netherlands reached the World Cup semifinals under new United man-

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao (top) was scooped up by Manchester United on the last day of the transfer window from Monaco. To make room, Mexican playmaker Javier Hernandez was loaned out to Real Madrid in Spain. Photo: Conmebol ager Louis van Gaal. The deals for Falcao and Blind took United’s closeseason spending to around £150 million as they look to rebuild following a disappointing seventh-place finish last season. With Falcao in line to form a star-studded attack alongside Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez were both allowed to leave Old Trafford. England forward Welbeck, who came through the youth ranks at United, joined Arsenal on a long-term contract for a reported fee of around £16 million. Mexico striker Hernandez was loaned to Real Madrid

after scoring 59 goals in 154 appearances for United. Meanwhile, youngsters Nick Powell and Tom Lawrence joined Leicester City – Powell on loan, Lawrence on a permanent deal – and defender Michael Keane was loaned to Burnley. United’s dealings dominated the headlines on a day when English clubs took their close-season spending soaring past £800 million – a Premier League record. Meanwhile, Manchester City parted ways with Micah Richards (Fiorentina) and Alvaro Negredo (Valencia), both on season-long loans with an option to buy. Southampton signed Bel-

gium defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on loan and also paid around £10 million to bring Senegalese winger Sadio Mane to the club from Red Bull Salzburg. Meanwhile, Hull City paid a club-record fee of £9.5 million to buy Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez from Palermo, signed Mohamed Diame from West Ham United, and completed loan moves for Southampton playmaker Gaston Ramirez, and Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa. Tottenham Hotspur signed France Under-21 midfielder Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier for around £4.7 million, sold Sandro to Queens Park Rangers for around £10 million, and loaned Lewis Holtby to Hamburg. Brazilian midfielder Sandro’s move to QPR’s Loftus Road reunited him with former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who also brought in Niko Kranjcar. Crystal Palace broke their transfer record to sign midfielder James McArthur from Wigan and also signed defender Zeki Fryers from Spurs and striker Kevin Doyle on loan from Wolverhampton. Meanwhile, Sunderland completed loan moves for Liverpool centre-back Sebastian Coates and Inter Milan midfielder Ricardo Alvarez. AFP

Seahawks seek title repeat as NFL revs up GRIDIRON

T

he Seattle Seahawks hope their sensational Super Bowl victory heralds an era of dominance as they began their title defence yesterday (September 4) at home against Green Bay. The NFL’s 2014 season opener sent the defensiveminded Seahawks against a Packers squad seen as their top rival for National Conference supremacy in the fight to reach Super Bowl 49 next February in Arizona. “One championship is special. Two is historic,” Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner said. “Three is a dynasty.” Not since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005 has a team won the Super Bowl in back-to-back years and not since the Dallas Cowboys in 1993 and 1994 has a club from the National Conference won consecutive NFL crowns. “We’re just getting warmed up,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said last February at the team’s victory parade after Seattle routed Denver 43-8 in the Super Bowl for the team’s first NFL title. Referees have cracked down on illegal contact and defensive holding in pre-season games, a move some see as

The league also fined and penalized the club for violating rules against contact in off-season workouts, signs of aggressiveness and intensity already building in Seahawks players. Seahawks’ defenders conceded the fewest points in the

NFL over the past two seasons, cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Earl Thomas keys to an aggressive unit that humbles opponents, including Denver star quarterback Payton Manning and the highest-scoring attack in NFL history in last February’s Super Bowl. Meanwhile, The Packers and New England have reached the playoffs for five years in

a row, the longest active such streaks, and Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers led his team to the Super Bowl title in 2011. Another championship contender will be San Francisco, led by quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers lost to Baltimore in the 2013 Super Bowl and to Seattle in last season’s National Confer-

ence final. In the American Conference, Denver will again be a title threat with Manning at the helm and New England, with 37-year-old quarterback Tom Brady sparking the attack, will be a contender for the crown as well, having lost the Super Bowl in 2008 and 2012 after winning three in four years from 2002 to 2005. South Africa make changes for Aussie Test RUGBY UNION SOUTH AFRICA ON WEDnesday (September 3) overhauled their team for the clash against Australia this weekend, making six changes for a game in which Bryan Habana will reach the 100 Test milestone. The Springboks survived a scare against Argentina in their last Rugby Championship outing last month, bouncing back from 12 points down to edge the match in Salta 33-31. The scrums were a particular problem for the twotime world champions and coach Heyneke Meyer made four changes to his pack for Saturday’s match (September

Morne Steyn to the backline. As a result, Bismarck du Plessis, Lood de Jager and Damian de Allende shift to the bench, joining Trevor Nyakane, Marcel van der Merwe, Pat

Lambie, Francois Hougaard and Warren Whiteley as replacements. “We were always planning in moving our personnel around during the competi-

tion,” said Meyer. With Australia desperate to recover from their 51-20 flogging by the All Blacks, Meyer said that would pose an even bigger threat than normal. “Saturday’s Test against Australia will take a massive effort from every member of our squad,” he said. “We’re not looking at their recent result against New Zealand and we know they will be a tough opponent. “Similarly, we need to move on from our victories over Argentina, which are now in the past. This is a new challenge and one we have to overcome to stay alive in the competition.” AFP

REIGNING QUADRUPLE world champion Sebastian Vettel has backed compatriot Nico Rosberg in his row with teammate Lewis Hamilton over their crash in Spa 10 days ago. Rosberg was disciplined by his Mercedes team after admitting he was responsible for crashing into the back of Hamilton on the second lap of the Belgian Grand Prix. It was an incident which eventually forced the Briton to retire from the race and cost Rosberg the chance of victory as he trailed in second behind Vettel’s Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo. “I think it was just a normal race accident which did not deserve to provoke a discussion about intention,” Vettel told reporters, referring to Hamilton’s claim in the immediate aftermath that Rosberg had admitted he “basically did it on purpose”. Vettel added: “No-one tries to break a wing on purpose and no-one wants to be guilty of disloyal driving because most of the time that doesn’t work.” It is not just Vettel backing his countryman, fellow German Nico Hulkenberg of Force India feels the same way. “Nico did everything right: he tried to overtake because he thought he was faster,” he said. Hamilton’s retirement left him 29 points behind Rosebrg in the championship race with seven GPs left. Vettel has endured a miserable title defence and sits down in sixth place overall, 58 points behind Ricciardo who only joined the team this season. The next race is at Monza in Italy this Sunday (September 7). AFP thephuketnews
