he old open parking lot in front of Phuket International Airport is now closed after the new multi-storey car park was opened for use. The airport’s new Director, Monrudee Gettuphan, told The Phuket
News on Monday (December 8), “We closed the old car park on Saturday (December 6). Taxis or other vehicles can bring passengers to the departures lounge or pick them up from arrivals, but they cannot stop in the old car park. “There are signs pointing the way to the new parking lot building, in Thai and English.
“We have two shuttle buses that will move people between the treminal and the car park. The buses will make pick-ups every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. “In case they are needed, we also have electric golf carts that can carry people to and fro. “If people do not want to wait, they can walk between the terminal

Illegal Beach Club pulled down at last Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th
O
ne of the last few illegal structures at Nai Yang Beach, the Beach Club, was demolished on Monday (December 8) after a last-ditch attempt by the owner to block the destruction. The demolition was carried out by OrBorTor Saku, backed by a hefty contingent of heavily armed Navy personnel, along with District Volunteers and local police. “The court has judged that the SorKor 1 title for the land [on which the Beach Club stood] actually applies to a different plot of land, with a different owner, so their claim to own the land is invalid,” Surin Yotharak, Deputy Direc-
An excavator takes large bites out of the Beach Club. tor of OrBorTor Saku told The Phuket News. “This has taken a while because of the court process. We demolished the place today because the legal process has now been finalised. This land is a part of the 400 Rai of public
land registered in 1931 as the Pak Bang pasture. “We demolished the building according to the Building Act. The owner had never applied for a building permit and the provincial committee withdrew the final petition filed
by the owner, while the temporary court protection [for the building] was also withdrawn by the Phuket Civil Court.” The demolition was initially blocked by the owner of the Beach Club, Arun Paewpanchoo, who arranged four vehicles to block the way to his restaurant. Officials responded by bringing in a tow truck and hauling away one of the vehicles (it was taken to Tah Chat Chai Police Station and impounded), leaving enough space for the excavator to move in and do its work. Mr Arun claimed that the legal process had one more day to run. “I asked the OrBorTor to wait just one more day. I have been following the court process and I wanted to wait for the court decision. If I am found to be at fault, I am happy to demolish everything myself,” he said. He added that he had filed a petition with the Administrative Court in Nakhon Si Thammarat on November 27. “The court issued an order that me and the OrBorTor authorities have to go to the court on December 9, but they did not wait for it. This is unfair and unlawful.” However, Mr Surin said that after consulting lawyers and judges he had been advised that there was no need to wait any longer. He added that there will be more demolitions of buildings along the Nai Yang beachfront road, which may take up to a year to finalise because of ongoing legal battles.

Brakeless bus crashes A TOUR BUS RAN OUT of brakes on Patong Hill on Wednesday afternoon (December 10), near Wat Suwankiriwong, at the foot of the hill on the Patong side. The bus careered off the main road and down Pisit Koranee Rd, shedding metal as it scraped along a wall, and knocking down at least two motorcycles. No one was injured apart

from the bus driver, who suffered cuts and bruises; there were no passengers aboard. Patong Hill has been the scene of frequent crashes involving tour buses. Often this is because the drivers, riding the air brakes on the way down the hill, exhaust the compressed air in the system, with the result that the bus ends up with no brakes.

n 11-year-old girl was hospitalised after three-metre-high shelves collapsed at the Homeworks store on the upper floor of Central Festival Phuket East on Sunday (December 7). The girl, her sister and their parents, were all treated initially at Vachira Phuket Hospital after the shelves, laden with tins of paint, toppled like dominoes, briefly trapping 11-year-old Pitchya Saekin. He r f a t h e r, Pa i b o o n Saek in, 42, her mother, Patcharee Boontalay, 35, and her sister, nine-year-old Natnaree escaped with scrapes and bruises. My daughter was very frightened by the situation and I can’t go back to the place where we were injured.” On Wednesday Homeworks’ Vice President for Marketing, Chanin Thiencharoen, said that the initial in-

He explained, “Phuket is a tourism province and staff turnover is very high because hotel jobs pay better. This means that some of the new staff have yet to complete the training course and are still learning their jobs. “We will run safety train-
ing courses for Phuket staff more often,” he promised, adding, “Please trust in our safety measures; we have specialist consultants from a company that makes shelves for many well-known stores in Thailand.” To tempt people back into the store, Homeworks is offering each of the first 100 buyers today, tomorrow and Sunday a B500 voucher.

huket now has three new senior provincial officials – two vicegovernors and a palad, or provincial secretary. The new Vice-Governors are Dr Panlop Singhasenee and Sutee Tongyam. For both men – promoted with effect from December 1 – this is their first time as vice-governors. The new Palad is Pakpoom Intarasuwan, promoted with effect from December 15. The two vice-governors replace Jamroen Tippayapongtada, recently reassigned to the equivalent post in Nakhon Pathom, and Dr Sommai Preechasilpa, who retired at the end of September. In the new hierarchy, V/ Gov Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak – the one remaining

vice-governor from the old team – is the most senior. He is now responsible for security. Next is Dr Panlop, 53, a Bangkok native, who comes to Phuket from a post in the Foreign Division of the Department of Provincial Administration. He has a doctorate in political science and will be responsible for economic and social affairs. “I am very proud to be a vice-governor here,” Dr Panlop told The Phuket News. “Phuket is a civilised place and already has its own plans
for managing the province. In the role of vice-governor here, I can simply follow the plan and coordinate with the relevant sections to make sure everything operates properly,” he explained. “I have experience in coordinating matters involving foreigners from my time in the Department of Provincial Administration” he added. “It may take me a little while to learn the job – this is my first time in the role of vice-governor – but I will push
forward in high gear,” he said. V/Gov Sutee is also new to the role, having been promoted from provincial palad in Ratchaburi. He has been assigned the role of managing the officials in the province. He said he was excited to be in a new post in a new place. “Being promoted to vicegovernor is already a big step for me,” he told The Phuket News, “but what makes it more exciting is being vice-governor of Phuket.” Ratchaburi, he explained,
was the mix of urban and country style but Phuket is very different, with a city style and a mixture of nationalities, Thais, expatriates and tourists. “It looks challenging because Phuket is a small island but at the same time a big city. There are many nationalities and businesses crowded in here. Governance will be a lot different [from what I know].” “I believe Phuket should be focused on sustainable development. The management must support the fast-growing city and local people must be involved as a part of the management.” The third new face is not in fact new to Phuket. Pakpoom Intarasuwan had been, until his promotion on December 15, the Muang Phuket District Chief since January. He replaces Saeree Panichakul who, like Dr Sommai, retired on September 30.

LE MÈRIDIEN PHUKET Beach Resort has moved a row of sun loungers off Karon Nui beach after villagers complained on Monday (December 8) to local media. “Beach chairs from small operators around the island have been removed but there are some big business operators who are still taking advantage from the beach,” said a villager who did not want to be named. “It is not fair. “I have talked to a member of the resort staff who told me that they have to put the beach loungers out because they are included in the resort’s guest package.” But a Mèridien official, speaking with The Phuket News under condition of anonymity, said the hotel has no policy to put sun loungers on the beach.
He said that the hotel provides umbrellas for hotel guests but these are free of charge and are removable. They are put on the beach only on request. “Now we provide portable umbrellas at the request of our guests, while the beach loungers are placed on the lawn [on Mèridien land], next to the beach,” said the official. Karon Nui beach is bounded at the ends by steep hillside and along the length of it by the resort, but the official was quick to note, “People who are not hotel guests can reach the beach freely.” On Tuesday there were no Mèridien loungers on the beach – all were on the lawn. The Phuket News was unable to confirm whether they had been moved as a result of the locals’ complaint. thephuketnews

Policeman flips out POLICE WERE CALLED out to help one of their own in Cherng Talay on Sunday (December 7) after a police lieutenant lost control of the car he was driving and ended up overturned in a ditch. The accident happened at 6:30am on the New Airport Road, about a kilometre from the Thalang Technical School. The driver, Cherng Talay Pol Lt Nicom Kaewnoo, and his female passenger were not hurt in the accident. But the car, a Honda Civic, was badly damaged after smashing into the roadside safety rail and sliding about 20 metres before flipping and landing upside-down in the ditch next to a canal. Emergency response crews arrived to find the lieutenant and his friend standing by the car. It took rescuers about two hours to pull it from the ditch.

Major push against crime by foreigners T
he Thai police have given themselves three months to launch a major crackdown on transnational gangs that have spread into Thailand, including biker gangs said to be operating in Phuket, and the island’s plague of foreign ATM skimmers. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) is leading operations to suppress the criminal outfits because it has the power of arrest anywhere in the country. The CIB is supported by a broad team of law-enforcement agencies under the banner of the new Transnational Crime Coordination Centre (TCCC). Pol Maj Gen Thitirach Nonghanphithak, deputy chief of the CIB, is designated as a key person in these investigations. The TCCC was established as an umbrella force that works in collaboration with related divisions in the Royal Thai Police. The centre, headed by assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Dechnarong Suthichanbancha, will open officially next Monday (December 15). Gen Dechnarong said many foreigners have committed crimes in Thailand, mainly targeting Thais. In some cases, the gangs moved the money they duped from their victims to other countries.
One target of the push will be ATM skimmer gangs, like these two Russians arrested in Phuket. If left unchecked, the transnational crime rate will continue to rise, and more Thais will fall victim, he said, noting that the country is now opening its doors to more foreign visitors. Teams have now begun planning their investigations using information from the police’s main database. The teams have analysed the gangs’ methods and are considering which laws they may invoke when pressing charges. “The crimes have cost the victims a lot of money, and some wound up in
debt while the criminals have not been arrested,” said Pol Lt Gen Dechnarong. Various police divisions have been delegated suppression tasks. Crimes identified for special attention include illegal weapons trade; car theft and general theft; fraud rings such as “black money” gangs; thefts of valuables from shops or trade fairs; on internet crimes, such as internet-hacking and call centre scams; card skimming; money laundering; pyramid schemes; human trafficking; the illegal trade in
imported food supplements and drugs; wildlife trading; and gang activity that pollutes the environment. Of particular concern, said Pol Maj Gen Thitirach, are five specific types of crime. Romance scams, whereby Thai and foreign criminals use social media to approach middle-aged, middle-class Thai women who are either single or divorced, pretend to be romantically interested, and trick them into parting with money; ATM skimming; Criminals renting houses in Bangkok and other major cities and then breaking into neighbouring homes. Call centre gangs, mostly operated by Chinese with help from Thai accomplices, who aim to talk people into giving up details of bank accounts which are then ransacked; Smuggling of carcasses of protected species and ivory from Indonesia and Malaysia into Thailand through the southern borders. Police have also specifically named the Bandidos biker gang as a target. They are suspected of obtaining land titles illegally with the help of corrupt officials, in order to built developments. crashes into light pole SIX PEOPLE WERE INjured after a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into a light pole on Thepkasattri Rd on December 3. At 01.50am, Pol Lt Suporn Meaungkai and EMS units were called to the scene in front of Thalang School, where they found the Isuzu pickup truck jammed into the light pole. One of the victims was laying underneath the wreckage, while four victims who bounced off the back of the truck from impact, were found laying on the street. Rescuers treated the injured victims with first aid, while city officials attempted to push the truck to the side to
release the male victim trapped underneath. All of the victims were then taken to Thalang Hospital for further treatment. The victims in the truck were named as; Wit Nakham,46, (the driver); Tawatchai Salee, 30, (victim underneath truck); Noppon Kanjanaburi, 33; Jantri Hanhong, 30; Nattapon Nakham, 15; and Tanawat Jantadee, 6. Mr Wit said that he was driving back from Bangkok when he fell asleep on the steering wheel. “I woke up when my car hit the light pole. Tawatchai, who was sat next to me, tried to pull the steering wheel but it was too late,” Mr Wit told police.
r isoonthor n Mayor Woraw ut Song yos, accompanied by more than 200 residents on Monday morning (December 8) delivered complaint letters to officials after police tried to smash their way into the home of his brother on December 3, in order to arrest him. The 20 police officers on the raid had an arrest warrant for Padungsak Songyos on a charge of issuing a bad cheque. They did not, however, have a search warrant. Instead, they cited martial law as justification for attempting to break down the front door of the home in the Songyos family compound in Moo 7, Srisoonthorn. Hathairat Songyos, sister of Mr Padungsak and Mr Worawut, told The Phuket News, “At that time [at 7pm], only my mother and a six-yearold child were in the house. “They were in the back of house, and did not hear the police demands that they open

They tried to break through the door, claiming that, under martial law, police have the authority to do that. “In the event they could not get through the metal gate on the door,” she said. She alleged that police told neighbours of the Songyos
family that they had come with an arrest warrant on drug charges. “I was very upset that they told our neighbours that,” she added. Mayor Worawut told the Governor that the family felt scared and threatened, especially because they knew that the officer leading the raid, Lt Col Sommai Onkum of Cherng Talay Police, is well known as a marksman. “We have babies in houses around that area. I am concerned about our security,”
the mayor said. “I’m not sure whether this action – taking place at night – might be over the top for a bounced cheque case. I would like Phuket officials to investigate it.” Governor Nisit Jansomwong told the crowd, “Please trust that Phuket officials will not ignore this case. We will take action by assigning an impartial person to investigate the incident as soon as possible. “This will done within 15 days and I will inform Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit about your security concerns,” he added. “If something related to safety happens to you, I will take responsibility for it,” he said. A few minutes later Pol Col Witoon Gongsudjai, representing Gen Patchara, also came to meet the villagers to accept a copy of the letter. He told them, “I can’t make any statement at this stage – I have to read the letter first. But for sure the police will investigate this matter as requested.”

On Monday the standard was flown to Phuket and then carried in a motorcade to the TAC headquarters at Cape Panwa, displayed on the back of the military truck by the unit’s honour guard so that the public could see and admire it. The motorcade was arranged with

Traffic was cleared out of the way and people were barred from footbridges over the road so that no one’s head would be higher than the flag. Members of the armed forces are pledged to protect the standard, if necessary at the cost of their lives.
A CAR DRIVER WHO failed to brake at traffic lights on Thepkrasatree Rd has been blamed for causing a five-vehicle pile up in which a pick up truck ended up on top of a car. The accident occurred at the Khow Lan intersection, Baan Lipon, at 3:30pm last Friday (December 5), bringing traffic to a standstill in the southbound lanes. “They crashed like dominoes,” said motorcycle rider
Namfon Poesing, 20, who was the only person injured in the accident. Before being taken to Talang Hospital, Ms Namfon said she was at the traffic lights when a car ploughed into the line of waiting vehicles. She was bumped off her motorcycle when it was hit by one of the cars shunted in the pile up. All five drivers involved were questioned at Thalang Police Station.

ice Governor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak has called for officials and the public sector in general to comply with a Thai law that mandates the provision of facilities for the disabled, such as ramps for wheelchairs, and special toilets. The Vice Governor made his call at the annual Day of People with Disabilities celebrations at Rajabhat Phuket University and assured hundreds of disabled people in the university meeting hall that they will receive good public welfare and service. He also told The Phuket News that many national and local organisations have made
Vice Governor Somkiat Sangkhaosutthirak (left) and PAD President Sawai Promjinda donations in cash and kind to help Phuket’s disabled people. He reserved special praise for the work of the Phuket Association for the Disabled (PAD). “The association has brought together the disabled from around the island and cooperates with many organisations to give them a
better quality of life, such as getting them basic appliances, a monthly allowance and caseby-case support.” The President of the PAD, Sawai Promjinda, announced that, after the PAD had lobbied “for a long time”, disabled people have finally received a rise in their monthly allowance from the government.
“After we pushed for a long time, the government has approved an B800 monthly allowance – an increase from B500 – for a million disabled people around the nation, including almost 5,000 people in Phuket,” he said. He backed V/Gov Somkiet’s call for more public facilities for the disabled. “There is already a law that all buildings and public ways must have separate utilities for the disabled, such as parking, toilets, paths and ramps,” he explained, “but there are few places in Phuket that have done this. “I would ask people in power, in both public and private sectors, to follow this law and give the disabled a chance.”

Villagers plead for help against ‘business people’ Saran Mitrarat. reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

bout 50 residents from Satonpho community in Moo 3, Palai, Chalong, went on Monday morning (December 8) to the Damrongtham Centre at the Provincial Hall to ask officials for help in a land dispute with “business people” who, they say, have been threatening them. They also asked for help in getting the dispute resolved in the courts as fast as possible. Ronhem Sangkao, head of the community, explained, “A total of 46 households in the community, including elderly people, children and students, have been living there since 1988, but in the past few months seven or eight houses were demolished by business people.” In a letter explaining their plight, the villagers wrote, “We would like to ask for justice on any related case involving local residents, especially the following points: “We ask the Court to make its judgements on cases related to residents as fast as possible; that the boundary of our com-

They also sometime threaten us [to try to get us] to leave. “Please sympathise us and allow us to live here peacefully until the court makes its decisions,” Mr Ronhem said.
Phuket Damrongtham Centre Chief, Prapan Khanprasang, accepted the letter and promised the villagers he would help as soon as possible. The pleas are the latest in a series of volleys between the villagers and the business people, which earlier this year deteriorated into gunplay and arson, with both sides threatening the other to the point where the Royal Thai Navy had to send heavily armed troops to restore peace. On June 2, a small camp for workers clearing the land on behalf of the business people was attacked by men armed with shotguns and petrol bombs. The villagers have already been told by the Land Office that they have no right to squat on the 83 rai of land, which is owned by a partnership. The partners were previously identified as Prajit Hongyok, Samran Saengyanuprab, Prateuang Kreuathong and Supalak Kunarak, who hold land deeds dating back as far as 1913. In June, five villagers were arrested by the Navy for the attack on the work camp, and guns and knives were confiscated from them.
ANOTHER CASE OF RICHversus-poor land problems came to a head on December 4 when more than 50 villagers from the Soi Kingkaew community gathered at Phuket Town police station after a “businessman” reported to police that they encroached on and damaged private land. Songklot Imjit, a representative of the villagers, explained, “Actually, we planned to plant some trees on the border separating the village from the mangrove to celebrate HM the King’s Birthday. Who will help the homeless?

t’s a well-known fact that Phuket’s actual population is much larger than official figures based on the number of residents living in the province. While condos and housing developments continue to rise to accommodate the island’s expanding affluent community, there is an increasing number of less fortunate people who have occupied public and private land for many years but now face strong-arm tactics employed by ‘business people’ to have them removed. In some cases, people unwittingly move onto privately owned land when they see it is not being used. After a few years though, the families of squatters increase in size and number, and the community becomes somewhat established, creating all manner of issues when the landowner decides it’s time to do something with the land and reclaim it from the squatters.

Two such cases have come to light recently. About 50 residents in the Satonpho Community in Chalong, who have been there since 1988, recently asked for help from the Damrongthum Centre over a land dispute with “business people” who, they say, have been threatening them and destroying houses in the village (see page 9). Another 432 families comprising about 1,200 people in the Soi Kingkaew community are dealing with a similar dispute while waiting for a community land paper to be issued that should confirm their right to occupy the land. However, they claim a local “businessman” has told police that they are encroaching on private land. When villagers face such disputes and evictions, there really is no official body they can turn to for legal support, leaving them at the mercy of
lawyers and heavies paid by wealthy land owners to dream up creative ways of removing them. Thailand does have government subsidised housing projects (Ua-Atorn) to provide homes for financially challenged families but even then they have to come up with at least B10,000 to get a foot in the door. Phuket has two such subsidized housing projects in Rassada and Talang, but it is often already wealthy people that end up making themselves even more wealthy by claiming to be poor and buying up the cheap housing in order to sell or rent for much greater profit. Of course if landowners do not want others illegally squatting on their land, they have a right to get them removed. But where are those squatters to go? And who or what is in place to help these fellow countrymen at least to have four walls and a roof over their head?

Government announces 2015 stimulus packages ‘Micro debts’ for poor, tax cuts for SMEs, raw materials imports
T
he cabinet has endorsed plans to set up “nano financing” operators to provide loans to the poor and to issue state bonds worth B100 billion. The measures are a part of the Finance Ministry’s New Year “gift package” for the public, consisting of four measures, said Finance Minister Sommai Phasee after the cabinet meeting Tuesday (December 9). “The ministry has taken two months to develop this package to be a New Year gift for the people but the prime minister does not want to use the term ‘gift’,” he said. He said the package is mainly aimed at helping lowincome people and strengthening the country’s competitiveness. It will cost the government B8 billion. He said setting up nano financing operators is the first measure, aimed at giving the poor access to fund

Panel proposes amnesty decree THE NATIONAL REFORM Council (NRC) subcommittee for reconciliation chaired by Anek Laothamatas will propose for inclusion in the new constitution a provision granting amnesty to people who took part in political unrest between 2005-2014, according to an informed source. The proposal has two options. Under the first option, all of the people who took part in political activities between 2005-2014 would be granted amnesty, except those who committed serious criminal offences which caused death and those who committed lese majeste under Section 112 of the Criminal Code. The second option is to grant blanket amnesty to all without exception. The source said the Anek panel had also proposed that while the new constitution is still in the drafting process the cabinet should issue an executive decree on amnesty, as allowed by Section 21 of the 2014 interim constitution. profits of between B300,001 to B1mn will remain unchanged at 15pc while, those with profits of more than B1mn to B3mn will enjoy a tax cut of 5pc from 20pc to 15pc. The tax rate for those making profits of more than B3mn will be unchanged at 20pc. SMEs that qualify must have registered capital of not over B5mn and sales revenues not exceeding B30mn a year. Mr Sommai said 28,000 SMEs will benefit from the measure which could boost their investment by B700mn a year. The third measure is cutting import tax for 1,274 items of raw materials and machinery to 0-10pc from 10-20pc. The last measure is to issue saving bonds worth B100,000 to help savers amid the low interest rate environment. The bonds, with interest rates of nearly 4pc, will be put up for sale on Jan 12-16 and 19-20. The bonds will be split into two lots of B50bn each.

SEA opium use hits high Myanmar output falls, cultivated areas flat
O
pium production in Southeast Asia increased this year, to three times the levels of 2006, a United Nations report said Monday (December 8). The UN Office on Drugs and Crime reported today that the cultivation area for opium poppy in Myanmar and Laos has increased for the eighth consecutive year, to now 63,800 hectares. (EPA photo) Myanmar remained the area’s top producer, second worldwide only to Afghanistan, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. However, production fell for the first time in nearly a decade in 2014 due to lower crop yields. Myanmar and Laos were the most significant producers in the area, with total crops of 762 tonnes of opium, most of which was converted using chemicals brought in illegally to produce 76 tonnes of heroin that was then smuggled out, it said. Myanmar produced 670 tonnes of opium this year, 200 tonnes fewer than 2013. “This two-way trade of chemicals going in and heroin

coming out of the Golden Triangle is a significant challenge to stability and the rule of law,” said UN agency’s regional representative. Total poppy cultivation in Myanmar and Laos rose to 63,800 hectares in 2014 from 61,200 in 2013, it said. In Myanmar, total area under opium poppy cultivation was steady at 57,600 hectares. The decline in output was mostly due to decreased crop yields, a factor that varies annually because of climatic fluctuations and disease.

The restive Shan State in the north of Myanmar alone accounted for 89 per cent of poppy cultivation in the Golden Triangle, a poppyrich area straddling adjoining parts of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. Farmers faced few alternatives to poverty other than growing poppy, UNODC’s Laos country manager Cheikh Toure said. “Opium farmers are not bad people. Sales of villas shift toward middle range Risinee Sarikaputra editor@thephuketnews.com
ANALYSIS
W
hile Phuket continues to attract its fair share of extremely wealthy tourists and property investors, the number of foreigners willing to splash out B100 million or more for a luxury villa has been dwindling. Phuket these days is attracting more mass-market travellers, notably Russians and Chinese, whose numbers help offset the drop in jet-setters. Some of the latter have been put off by Thailand’s political turmoil, while others are simply looking for new playgrounds. Villas are still selling, but they are more modest, though still priced beyond the means of most mere mortals. Previously, much of the demand on the island was for huge villas, with usable area of 1,600 square metres or more, and selling prices of B100 million each, or more. “Millionaires Mile” in Kamala, in particular became famed for its proliferation of luxury residential developments, where most homes cost in excess of B50 million, and some for as much as B250 million. Developments in the area share common features: low density, beautiful uninterrupted
Not too many takers now. This villa on Phuket’s Millionaires’ Mile was advertised four years ago for $7 million (B210 million). sea views and large villas with more bedrooms than average. As of the third quarter of this year there were 1,874 villas along the west coast of Phuket from Nai Yang to Rawai beach. Sixty-four per cent of all units were in the size range from 200 to 800 square metres. Only 9pc, or 178 units, offered more than 800 square metres; the remainder were smaller than 200sqm. Most of the mega-villas were launched or built before the global financial crisis began in 2008, especially between 2004 and 2007 when markets were booming and wealthy investors were flocking to Phuket. Villas nowadays tend to be constructed on more compact land plots of 200 to 400sqm, or 50 to 100 square wah. A Knight Frank survey has identified 606
units in this category. A plot of 200-400sqm can support a home with usable area of 100 to 200sqm. Of the total cumulative supply, 51pc, or 950 units, have been sold for less than B20 million each. Only 18pc, or 348 units, were sold for more than B50 million. The majority of the supply is concentrated in Bang Tao, which has 770 units (41pc of the total). The Laguna area remains a highly sought-after part of the island due to the range of facilities and its relative proximity to the airport. The Laguna complex itself now contains the Banyan Tree and Dusit hotel-branded villas for sale and rent. The selling price of villas managed by Banyan Tree ranges from B59 million to B125 million a unit,
while the Dusit properties are priced around B34 million each. Nowadays, the majority of property buyers in Phuket are expatriates based in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai, although other regional markets are growing in significance. For the most part they have lived and worked in the region for a number of years and tend to know Phuket well, having spent holidays there. The emerging markets recently are Australians, French, Canadians and Russians, as well as Asian travellers. Russians prefer larger units with three or four bedrooms, while Asians like more compact twobedroom villas. Of the 1,874 units available in total, 1,474 villas have been sold, representing a take-up rate of 78.7pc.
Annual take-up of villas before the crisis in 2008 was between 160 and 180 units per year. The figure decreased to 83 units in 2008, and 79 units in each of 2009 and 2010, before improving to 163 units in 2011. The market has since regained its momentum with sales in the first nine months of 2014 totalling 266 units. The highest demand now is for villas priced below B20 million with 690 units sold out of 950 available in this price range, or 72.6pc. Most villas in this range have two or three bedrooms, with usable area of 200-300sqm, located on small plots of 50 to 70 square wah (200 to 280 sqm). The Phuket villa market remains attractive given that only 400 units remain for sale, while annual take-up is likely to be about 250 units. As supply dwindles over the next year or so, selling prices will increase. Villas thus are attractive for both short- and long-term investment. The increased diversity of visitors to the island will create demand for many product segments from budget to high-end properties. New THAI boss plans massive revamp THAI AIRWAYS INTERNATIONAL’S new president, Charamporn Jotikasthira, says the airline needs a massive reform of structures and management philosophy to survive in an intensive competitive environment. Commenting to the media on his first day at his office on December 4, he said fierce competition requires a total remake of the airline’s marketing strategy and the organisation working system.
“I will [focus] on revamping the business model, work systems and strategy to drive the flag carrier forward. My plans will cover a five-year term.” He believes THAI needs a massive remake similar to the one that occurred in commercial banks in 1997 to 1998. “It will be necessary for THAI to shape up in all aspects to become competitive and to ensure sustainable growth. “Besides organisational restructure,
ticket sales through ticketing agencies will be the next to be reformed to increase market share for online ticket sales,” he added. The president made no reference to rampant corruption, nor to an on-going audit to weed out irregularities that allegedly caused financial losses at domestic stations. It is understood that the audit was initiated nationwide following the military coup of May 22. TTR Weekly

Low-cost airlines likely to see boom in 2015 – report KASIKORN RESEARCH Centre estimates the number of low-cost airline passengers travelling through Suvarnabhumi and Don Meuang airports will increase between 24 and 30 per cent next year, to reach 29.22 to 30.63 million passenger movements. The centre said this year the low-cost carrier business was robust despite political troubles in Thailand. “The low-cost airline business has a high market share… Domestic and short-haul routes did not decline and 70pc of low-cost airline passengers are local residents, while international routes connecting to Asean and China were hit by a decline in Chinese tourists. However, low-cost carrier traffic continues to grow.” “Competition among Thailand’s low-cost airlines intensified during the last three years. New routes opened and they have supported growth in tourism and the economy.” In September this year, there were 66 aircraft in the fleets of low-cost airlines in Thailand, an increase of 15pc over the same period last year. They serve 32 domestic and 33 international routes, the report said. “Japan and South Korea are the top new destinations for low-cost, long haul services and Thailand’s low-cost airline market, next year, will benefit from an ASEAN Open Skies policy,” the report claimed.
“The Asean Economic Community will boost intraregional travel movements … and Asean Open Skies will also ease restrictions on routes and frequency between member countries.” In addition to domestic routes, Thailand’s low-cost airlines serve 30 short to medium-haul destinations –16 connect Thailand with Asean countries and seven with China, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and India. The bank said last year 225 flights a week were flown operated to Asean destinations, accounting for 65pc of the 335 flights a week on international routes from Thailand. “Although currently Asean member countries still have to sign off on open skies regulations, the aviation situation in the region is considered to be more relaxed,” the bank reported. The centre estimated that with the expansion of lowcost airline business due to open skies, low-cost airline passengers travelling through Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports should increase 24pc to 30pc to reach 29.22 to 30.63 million in 2015. THE BIG LIST Famous Animals From rich to lucky to... psychic? If all else fails, perhaps your pet has one of the following skills to make headlines
Grumpy Cat: At just over US$100 million, Grumpy Cat’s fortune is bigger than Nicole Kidman’s, Cameron Diaz’s and even Matthew McConaghey’s. The feline’s permanent scowl, attributed to an underbite and dwarfism, has inspired two best-selling books, produced more than six million Facebook fans and even a Hollywood movie. Grumpy Cat, real name Tardar sauce, first got big after a photo was posted on the social news website Reddit back in 2012. “I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media and the phone simply hasn’t stopped ringing since,” owner Tabatha Bundesen told a local newspaper in in Arizona. Fido: During World War II, Fido was found lying wounded in a roadside ditch by Carlo Soriani. The amiable Italian took the dog home and nursed it back to health. After Fido recovered, the dog began to follow Soriani to the bus stop everyday and wait for him once Soriani came back. This went on for two years when, in December 30, 1943, a violent Allied bombardment hit Soriani’s factory and killed him. For 14 more years, Fido continued to wait at the bus stop twice a day looking for his owner, until the dog died in 1958. Jim the Wonder Dog: Born in Louisiana in 1925, Jim the Wonder Dog was dubbed “Hunting Dog of the Country” by Outdoor Life Magazine. It was said that he could go out into the street and locate cars by make, color and license number. He also displayed psychic abilities by picking the winner of the Kentucky Derby seven years in a row and the 1936 World Series winner. A team of psychologists, led by Dr A.J. Durant of the School of Veterinary Medicine, tested Jim’s abilities and said: “this dog possessed an occult power that might never come again to a dog in many generations.” Shrek: This Merino male sheep was found hiding in a rock cave near the Bendigo high country ranch in New Zealand back in 1994. Most male sheeps have to be sheared annually but Shrek avoided it for six years. His wool covered over 75 per cent of his body and contained enough to make sutis for 20 men. While most sheep’s wool weigh about 4.5kg, Shrek’s weighed about 27kg. Because of its size, its eventual keepers named him Shrek. He became a major celebrity in New Zealand and even met the country’s Prime Minister. It took 20 minutes to shear off the 27kg of wool and it was used for children’s medical charities. Shipwreck Sam: This incredible cat survived three shipwrecks during World War II. The first of which was the Bismarck, which was downed in a sea-battle in May 1941 and cost the lives of 2,000 crew members. He was picked up by a British battleship, the HMS Cossack, which was torpedoed months later while being towed to safety – 159 men died in that wreck. Later, he was brought to live aboard the HMS Ark Royal which was also torpedoed. Shipwreck Sam was found floating on a plank with an angry scowl. Shipwreck Sam eventually died in a seaman’s home in Belfast in 1955.

‘Gangnam Style’ gallops beyond YouTube counter
J
ust how big a hit was Gangnam Style? So mammoth that the Internet literally wasn’t ready to handle it. YouTube said that the 2012 song by South Korea’s Psy – accompanied by a horseriding-like dance that became a global sensation – this week reached the maximum number of views that its counter had imagined to be conceivable. The video-sharing site shows that the official version of the video has had more than 2.15 billion views. The problem: YouTube designed its counter with what is known in computer science as
a 32-bit integer, meaning that the maximum number of countable views was 2,147,483,647. “We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer,”
YouTube, which is owned by search engine giant Google, said in a posting on Google+. YouTube engineers anticipated the problem and upgraded to a 64-bit integer. That means
that Gangnam Style or future mega-hit videos can now go beyond nine sextillion views – a feat that, at least according to conventional wisdom, would be impossible to break. AFP
British MP’s Candy Crush Saga turns sour A BRITISH LAWMAKER snapped playing the Candy Crush Saga children’s game on his tablet during a pensions debate apologised Monday (December 8), saying his conduct was unbecoming for a member of parliament. In a picture published by The Sun newspaper, Nigel Mills was seen engaging in the popular pastime by swiping his tablet to make lines of sweets explode. The Conservative lawmaker initially brushed off the controversy, telling the paper: “There was a bit of the meeting I wasn’t focusing on and I probably had a game or two”. But he was later forced
into a fuller climbdown after a torrent of angry reactions. “I apologise unreservedly for my behaviour at the committee meeting and realise it fell short of what is expected of a Member of Parliament,” he tweeted. Lawmaker Edward Leigh rallied to his colleague’s side, telling critics to “get a life” and saying of his own time on the
public accounts committee: “My God it was boring!” Even Prime Minister David Cameron waded into the controversy, saying: “I’m sure he will be very embarrassed by what he saw in the papers today and he will work even harder in the future.” Parliamentary officials meanwhile opened an investigation into the pictures as photography or filming are not allowed without prior permission. John O’Connell, a spokesman for the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “The issue isn’t how the photos got out but why the MP was messing around on video games.” AFP

Ajarn Kamkien Bantao, head of Physical Education Department at Pathumthep Witthayakarn School in Nong Khai province, was made famous last week when his students tweeted his photo and compared it to Prayuth. “Does my teacher look like Uncle Prayuth? Falcons to go jet set on Lufthansa FALCONS, THE ANIMAL beloved by rich Middle Eastern hunters, are soon to be allowed on Lufthansa flights. The airline said last week that passengers would from late 2015 be able to take their hunting birds onboard in a newly-designed device called the “Falcon Master” tray,
which can be fitted with a cage. “[‘Falcon Master’] allows owners to take their falcons or other birds in the cabin with
them,” said the airline’s tech division, Lufthansa Technik. The device is now in the design phase, and will likely take six to nine months before it is ready for use. The special stand is adjustable in height, width and depth and can be installed on a seat of all Lufthansa flights. AFP
World’s largest truffle sells for $61,250 at auction CONSIDER IT A BARGAIN: The world’s largest white truffle sold at auction Saturday for US$61,250 – far less than the cool US$1 million its owner reportedly had hoped for. The White Alba’s Truffle weighed 1.89 kg when unearthed last week in the Umbrian region of Italy, making it by far the largest ever found. Sotheby’s said it was purchased by a gourmand from Taiwan, who had placed his winning bid by telephone. T he m a s sive f u ng u s – slightly smaller than an American football – was large enough “to feed a party for 300-400 truffle dinners.” The Balestra truffle is expected to enjoy immortality as an entry in next year’s edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. News reports said this new record holder was about twice the size of the previous champion. Never theless, the dethroned white truffle fetched far more when it was sold in 2010 – some $417,200, according to Sotheby’s, The auction house said the Balestra family plans to donate proceeds from the auction to a number of charitable organizations, including Citymeals-onWheels, a local group to feed the hungry, and the Children’s Glaucoma Foundation. Children friendly beaches in Phuket
Question We are visiting Phuket for our family holiday this December. My husband and I have both been to Koh Samui before but neither of us has been to Phuket. We have two daughters who will be 6 and 9 when we go. Could someone help me out with the following please: We would like to stay near the beach. Where would you recommend? Is the food fairly westernised? I have two girls who aren’t very adventurous trying new food. Thanks in advance!
that it can make a perfect vacation for many families. The Christmas period is peak season and can be busy. The traffic inland can get fairly hectic but despite the hustle and bustle on the streets hotels in Kata, Karon, Patong and Bangtao can hide an enchanting calm oasis. Planning where to stay and with little distance to travel can make a big difference. Most restaurants, hotels and cafes also sell Western food. The street vendors also sell fruit, pancakes and shakes which children enjoy! Remember the phrase ‘mai ped’– not spicy! Keep children busy playing at beaches, snorkelling and visiting water parks, circus shows and adventure activities.
Answer Some dismiss Phuket as too commercial but the island is beautiful with many lovely hideaways

Kool as ice and just the right Mix Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th
S
and, sea, surf, sun... Phuket’s ‘S’ list goes on with savoury and soothing sensations, a whole lot of sucking, sipping and slurping. In case your imagination got away from you just now, know that we’re talking about smoothies! Indeed, a tropical island beach paradise without the offering of a refreshing, ice-cold real fruit-base beverage is like an ice cream sunday without the nuts and dripping chocolate fudge. Yet, through to the 1990s, most Phuket beach bartenders had little if any clue what a real smoothie was, let alone could serve you one. So when American entrepreneur Roy Sirota came to the island for a holiday in 1995, and couldn’t find a margarita that was worthwhile, he saw a golden opportunity. Two decades on, Roy’s Kool Mix business is booming, supplying hundreds of outlets across Phuket, Krabi and the gulf of Thailand, having standardised tropical Thailand’s smoothie trade to the delight of tourists and residents alike. The Phuket News recently spoke with Roy about Kool Mix. When did you start the business? We formally got going around 2000. The approval process with the Thai FDA took about a year and a half. I found a factory in New York to supply the mix, using my logo. We started with four flavours that the factory recommended: strawberry, mango, margarita and pina colada. Why import the mix instead of sourcing locally? It’s a quality issue. For the same reason why one would import HäagenDazs to Thailand when you have Walls and Nestle. The product is premium. Real fruit, the meat of the fruit is in the drinks. I went out of my way to find the best quality supply.
To inquire about Kool Mix products and services, visit www.kool-mix.com or call 076-263958, Thai or English. @thephuketnews
You have coffee too? The beauty of this is there are so many things you can do with it. You can add yoghurt, ice cream, milk or alcohol as you choose. It works for the outlets in so many situations. It’s a real smoothie. So many bars and restaurants use the word smoothie but often they’re just serving a fruit shake. What’s the difference between a smoothie and fruit shake? The consistency of the ice and the way it is served. A smoothie would almost be like an ice cream that you can easily drink through a straw, whereas a fruit shake has larger chunks of ice. To make a proper smoothie, you need to use less liquid. Many bars can’t do this, they add sugar syrup and water – all the liquid to their fresh fruit. Our smoothies are just the mix concentrate and ice, and blended to the right consistency. What kind of options do you offer clients/outlets? We supply by the box, with the mix in 1.89 litre bottles. Clients can mix the flavours they want in a box, customise their order however they want. We now offer eight flavours. When making drinks, the concentrate is diluted with ice and the preferred liquid – be it water or alcohol, for example. The costs are relative to the size of the drinks they’re
selling and can be calculated pretty easily. The margin can be tremendous. For example, a fruit drink might come out to B13 but could be sold for B65 for a 10 ounce (aprox. 300 ml) drink. But more important is the consistency. We standardise the drink so every outlet is making the same drink. We found that before, drinks would vary greatly at each bar, one might use more coconut milk here, or less pineapple juice or malibu there. There was no standard, customers weren’t getting the same pina colada. Even the same bartender might be inconsistent on one day, making the drink different. So we came in and showed them how to make drinks consistently. So consistency is key? Indeed, for all of our outlets, customers, we go in and provide extensive customer support and training to ensure
consistency – how big is the glass, how much mix and ice you should use in each drink. It’s all about doing it the same each time, as Starbucks would do. I came from the garment business. Every three months, fashion would change – the sleeve, the colours and styles would change and as a manufacturer I had to change with it. Then later, I started a hardware business, where I learned the value of consistency. Customers don’t want things to change, if something worked, there was no need to change/fix it. Same thing for the drink business. When clients find out that customers were coming back for a second drink, they realised ‘wow this stuff works’ cause they weren’t getting that from their drinks previously.
So what kind of drink is this, really? This turned out to be, like in the states, a destination drink. Customers always want to go back to the place with the best drink, where they can throw up their hands and have a good time. That’s what this did for the outlets that didn’t know what they’d been missing. When you have 50 people sitting around the swimming pool and everyone buys one drink. All of a sudden you think you’re in the drink business. What they didn’t realise is that if it was good, they each would have bought two, three drinks, come back the next day and bought a few more. But, now they can see what a desirable drink can do, when it tastes right every time.

he British International School Phuket (BISP) Secondary Library arranged a book donation to Phuket’s Muslim Wittaya School, which is located in Koh Kaew. More than 1,000 books in English, including fiction and non-fiction, were donated from the Secondary Library, and we are very happy that they have now found a new home. Representatives from the school as well as a few students met with Headmaster Neil Richards and Secondary School Principal Simon Meredith in the Secondary Library to hand over the books. They expressed how grateful they were for the book donation, and we hope that the students in their school will enjoy reading the books as much as our children have. Seeing the light of sustainability HAPPY HABITAT
Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th
C
ompared to temperate climes and winter wonderlands, life in the tropics can be simple yet abundant, with plenty of the essentials and pleasures to go around for everyone. Yet, in Phuket, despite having an abundance of the most essential life elements readily available – sunshine, rain and wind – the island’s caretakers continue to struggle to ensure a sustainable, consistent and reliable supply of basic utilities.
Energy Enlightened
You may have noticed a few social media memes in recent months highlighting the leaps that Western countries such as the US, Canada, Scotland, Denmark and Germany, among others, are starting to make in regards to renew-
able energy infrastructure. Yet the local fat fossil fuel order is clinging on to the status quo firmly, insisting that increasing if not perpetuating dependency on coal, oil and garbage combustion is the only way to sustain growing energy demands in Southern Thailand. This is the primary reason why they’ve justified investing tax revenue in a coal power plant and seaport in Krabi – to ensure you and I have adequate energy in the coming decade. But as more and more people
see the light and logic, and realise that renewable abundant energy sources such as the sun simply make more sense – environmentally and economically – the future begins to illuminate, literally, slowly albeit surely. Despite political shortcomings and ulterior motives, there is nothing stopping common folk like you and me from initiating Phuket’s sustainable transition, if not to save the world and all of Phuket, but simply to save ourselves. Indeed, domestic solar energy supplies and equipment are already widely and cheaply available on the island, and making the transition, even if only partially, is more cost-effective and practical than ever before, whether your aim is to supply all your home’s lighting, cooling, gardening and/or entertainment needs, or simply to charge your smart phone. In the next part, we’ll explain how to calculate and consolidate your personal/domestic energy needs in preparation for establishing your very own micro power station. Watch this space.

O
ne type of local grass has gone viral on the Thai internet recently, for its apparent ability to tighten and heal a woman’s birth cavity. Known in Thai as Ya Hee Yoom, or “Ya Repair” (literally the grass that repairs) barbed grass (Centotheca lappacea) has long been used in Thailand to treat women post labour, as it is believed to help heal wounds and tears on the
labia, and help to tighten the respective muscles. The traditional method of application is to burn the grass, dry or fresh, along with wood fuel until there is smoke coming up. The woman patient, wearing only a sarong stands over the smoke to receive treatment. Another way to apply the grass for treatment is boiling it to extract its essence in the form of a juice. It is thought to offer the same benef its as smoke. The juice does not have much of a taste so it can be sipped it all day long like water.

Off the beaten track in Indonesia Tim Newton broadcast@classactmedia.co.th
T
he opening up of Asia’s skies has not only been a boon to travellers plus the millions of new flyers, it’s also opened up many new locations which were once “off the beaten track”. Bandung in Indonesia is one of them. Once a weekend town in the hills three hours south of Jakarta, Bandung is now working to place itself on the tourist trail of Asia’s middle class explorers and the airlines that fly them there. The greater city of Bandung is home to some seven and a half million people although you never get the feeling you’re in such a big city. The feel is of a large town – there’s no “centre” or obvious CBD and plenty of old trees lining the roads, a tribute to the Dutch colonists who planted them. The attraction for Jakarta’s weekenders is the cooler weather. At nearly 800 metres above sea level it’s tangibly cooler right throughout the year. And like just about everywhere around the island of Java, there’s a nearby volcano. A very large volcano 2,000 metres high with a gaping, wide crater, the Tangkuban Perahu is a 90 minute ride out of town (a lot less with your escort) and up, up, up into the hills where the temperature drops a bit more but still a comfortable low 20s during the day. Once you push through
The Tangkuban Perahu volcano is 2,000 metres high with a gaping, wide crater. It last erupted in 1983. the ubiquitous touts (a lot pushier than those in Thailand) you do get to experience a very large crater and a few spurts of smoke. The smell of sulphur is still there but the tour guides assure us that we’re not going to die – good to know. Nearby hot springs and another crater that is off limits due to the poison gas still erupting remind us that Indonesia lives in the wake of some of the world’s most spectacular and catastrophic volcanic eruptions. Tangkuban Perahu last erupted in 1983 although there was a bit
of a false alarm in 2005 when the roads were closed due to some underground rumblings. The city is probably most famous for its factory outlets and some stunning 19th and 20th century architecture. The Dutch inhabitants of the city demanded establishment of a town centre at the start of the last century, and Bandung gradually developed itself into a resort city for plantation owners. Luxurious hotels, restaurants, cafes and European boutiques followed and the city become known as the Paris of Java. Whilst many of the vestiges of European colonisation have been swamped with the fast growth of an independent Indonesia, many of the buildings remain to give Bandung its own unique vibe. Apart from the Dutch colonial buildings which house much of the town’s officials and museums, is a collection of stunning art deco architecture. Sadly a lot of it is just rotting away but there’s still enough to attract the world’s art deco enthusiasts – a lot of it hidden away along roads outside the main city. But it’s not only the heritage and shopping that are going to lure you to Bandung. There are some emerging signature attractions that are world class and will be part of putting Bandung on the map for Indonesian tourism into the future. Dusun Bambu is just one of these new attractions. Imagine a Bamboo theme park. Walkways through tall bamboo with futuristic living areas, all
made from bamboo. Contemporary architecture with displays, fine dining and more relaxed areas. A novel village built from bamboo around a lake and beautifully landscaped areas to just wander and enjoy local cultural traditions There’s obviously more to bamboo than I thought! Beyond some of the signature tourist attractions Bandung will keep browsers and bargain hunters busy at its many markets. The layout of the city is a bit of a rabbit warren but the local tourism authority has worked hard to ensure good maps and guides are easy to follow and make getting around easy and fun. And the escorts help a lot too. Silk Air fly to Bandung, via Singapore. Tim was flown to Bandung by Silk Air and was a guest of the Tourist Association of Bandung.

Falling for Northern Thai charms Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

f you are thinking about exploring other parts of Thailand and want to experience somewhere unique with rich cultural heritage, then Chiang Mai is a must. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second-largest province by area (Nakhon Ratchasima being the largest), located in the North of the country. It was the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom and has long been the centre of Buddhism in the region, where the late and great King Meng Rai (1238–1317 AD) built innumerable temples. One of the most popular tourist attractions today is the beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
is located on “Doi Suthep”, 15 kilometres from the city. Doi is a northern
word for mountain, while Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is actually the name of the mountain the temple is located on. The top of the mountain will leave you speechless. The views up there really are magnificent. There is nothing like it. This ancient temple is one of the most sacred places in Northern Thailand, in which Thai people believe one of the Buddha’s relics was found and enshrined there. Other than temples, Chiang Mai is also known for its elephants. The elephant is a national symbol of Thailand. The animals have long been used as beasts of burden by man for transportation, timber logging, or in war. If you visit Chiang Mai, an elephant show performance at “Maesa Elephant Camp” is a must. This site is home to 78 elephants, and has been open for over 30 years. Located a short distance from Chiang Mai City, the camp features experts in the elephant breeding, training and healthcare, as well as sustainable tourism. All of these combined hel create outstanding performances, impressing people from all walks of life. You can even pick up some beautiful souvenirs, such as paintings, pillow cases and key rings. There’s something for everyone.
Sunday Market (Walking Street) One of Chiang Mai’s great weekly events takes place every Sunday from 4pm to 11pm. You’ll find everything there, from trendy homemade dresses to wooden jewellery boxes and ornate lanterns. The market starts at Thapae Gate and runs all the way to Ratchadamnoen Road through the heart of the Old Town. It is entirely closed off to

traffic. The Walking Street Market is a real showcase of the art and craftsmanship of Northern Thailand. The products
are truly authentic and original, making it the perfect place to find gifts and beautiful décor for your home. Many of the stallholders have personally made the items they sell. The various handcrafted ornaments are a testimony to the skills and creativity of the local people. Being so vast, it will take the whole night to walk around the market, so if you find something you like, buy it. Otherwise, you may not find the same shop again. And most importantly, don’t forget to haggle!” Getting to Chiang Mai is very simple. You can fly directly from Phuket to Chiang Mai with Bangkok Airways. The service runs once a day. For more information visit www.bangkokair. com. Oh, and one more tip. While you’re in the Bangkok Airways lounge, try the sticky rice with banana. It’s delicious.

Natarajasana is a balance asana that strengthens the legs. It also is a full body stretch which develops concentration and grace.
H
ello and welcome to December and another yoga asana. December is a festive time of year and this has inspired me this month, to practise a yoga asana that is dedicated to the lord of dance, Natarajasana, also known as dancers pose. I remember when I first saw this asana. I loved it but it was not easy, so we will be practising an abbreviated version of natarajasana that is still fun, but a little more manageable for beginners. This asana is a named after Nataraja (king of dance), who is a depiction of the god Shiva; the cosmic dancer who performs his divine dance to destroy a weary universe and make preparations for the god Brahma to start the process of creation. Natarajasana is a balance asana that strengthens the legs. It also is a full body stretch which engages the shoulders, chest and abdomen, strengthens the thigh and calf muscles, knees and ankles, hips and spine, and develops concentration and grace. Stretches the shoulders and chest Stretches the thighs, groins, and abdomen Strengthens the legs and ankles Improves balance
Follow the steps below to become a yogi: Start by standing tall. Inhale, shift your weight onto your right foot, and lift your left heel toward your left buttock as you bend the knee. Stand firm and strong on the right leg. Reach back with your left hand and grasp the

outside of your left foot or ankle. To avoid compression in your lower back, actively lift your pelvis toward your navel, and at the same time, press your tail bone toward the floor. Stretch your right arm forward in front of your torso and parallel to the floor. If you are a beginner to this asana, hold here until you feel more confident (see photo one). Begin to lift your left foot up away from the floor and back, away from your torso by pressing the foot into the hand and the hand into the foot. Extend the left thigh behind you and parallel to the floor. Keep your chest upright (see photo two).

I recently attended the launch of the new daily gourmet brunch menu and was lucky enough to watch one of Chef Bryan Burger’s cooking demos. The menu features a lavish selection including Lobster Benedict; The Bun (burger with millionaire’s bacon, egg, and relish in a brioche bun); Fried Egg & Avocado Breakfast Pizza; grilled Portobello mushrooms with eggs and Parmesan cheese; and thick-cut French toast topped with caramel banana and cinnamon. We started off with some Bloody Marys, followed shortly by the eggs Florentine. A simple, yet divine dish. The poached
eggs were perfectly cooked and placed on a toasted baguette, topped with tasty bacon and sprinkled with parsley. The plate was completed with a garnish of tomato salsa. The smooth yolk of the eggs alongside the crustiness of the bacon was mouthwatering and a delicious combination. Just delightful. Whatever you hungry for, Executive Chef Bryan Burger has your gourmet cravings covered. RE KÁ TA combines authentic Thai hospitality with the most intriguing people watching and sun kissed beach scenes. For more information or to make a reservation, please call +66(0)76 330 421.
Heavenly seaside views, authentic Italian flavours Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
H
idden away on a secluded beach near Patong, Amari Phuket is a stunning hotel with first-class dining options. Savouring flavours of Italy are now showcased at the new La Gritta restaurant, situated alongside the glamorous and typically stunning beachfront terrace, offering a unique and classy dining experience. The restaurant invites guests on a culinary tour to Italy through the finest flavours offered in their new Discovery Menu, which mixes traditional authentic flavours with a contemporary flair and features six courses. I recently sampled the menu, which was prepared by the talented Chef Patrizia, who hails from Rome, Italy. We began with the Crostini Al TreSapori – small pieces of ciabatta bread topped with fresh tomato salsa, Fontina cheese and smoked salmon. A very delightful starter. Next up was the Antipasti Misto which was a delicious platter of marinated bell peppers; eggplant; artichokes along with sliced finocchiona; Parma ham and mortadella with pistachios; pesto sauce and grissini sticks – served on a large wood chopping board. The Risotto Funghi was a nice mix of porcini and oyster mushrooms and Parmesan cheese, which was aged for 18 months. Now for one of the highlights – Tagliata Di Manzo; rare sliced Australian beef tenderloin, fresh rocket leaves, rosemary and garlic oil. The taste of the tender juicy beef alongside the rosemary and rocket flavours was just divine. Each mouthful was even tastier than the last. And in addition to the amazing beef, the chef also served some pork and lamb. Just when I thought it couldn’t get
any better, the chef brought out some seafood, which proved to be popular amongst all. King prawns cooked in fresh lemon, Italian extra virgin olive oil and oregano served with soft polenta. You could smell the fresh oregano even before the plates reached the table. Finally, my favourite part of the day. The assortment of mini enticing deserts: tiramisu; lemon tarts; and pistachio gelato, otherwise known as Assorti Mento Di Dolci. The lemon tart was made from a mix of Thai classics: papaya; pineapple; and dragon fruit, with just a hint of sauce. The sauce was made with a little honey, which went perfectly with the sourness of the lemon tarts. Overall, each dish was made to perfection and was a reflection of the quality of the ingredients. If you’re looking for something different and are craving an outstanding Italian evening, then head to Amari’s La Gritta restaurant and try the Discovery Menu. The dining room is open from 6pm to midnight, while the oceanfront terrace is open from 10am to midnight everyday. For more information or to make a reservation, please call 07634 0106.

IN BRIEF Inventor of videogame console dies
Considered the father of videogames for his early role in the development of the gaming console, Ralph Baer passed away last week at the age of 92. Baer created the first prototype of a videogame console, dubbed the Brown Box, back in 1968 which eventually became the world’s first commercial videogame console – Magnavoox Odyssey which came with 16 games and sold over 1 million units. In 1978, he co-developed the memory game Simon and was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 2010.
Sony announces slew of PS4 games
Sony Computer Entertainment, the makers of the PlayStation 4, announced a host of videogame releases for 2015 at last week’s inaugural PlayStation Experience fan event. Street Fighter V and Drawn to Death, both PS4 exclusives, will be released in spring 2015 along with Final Fantasy VII. In addition, The Forest, Killing Floor 2, Fat Princess Adventures, Broken Age, and Gang Beasts are all expected to be released for the console sometime in 2015. Yakuza 5, originally released in Japan back in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, will finally be available worldwide with a few updates for the PlayStation 4.

A
mountain on Mars may have built up over time from lake sediments, according to NASA scientists who have been studying observations from the Curiosity rover scouring the Red Planet. The latest analysis is based on rocks discovered at the lower edges of Mount Sharp, which is located in the midst of a crater on Earth’s neighboring planet. “Gale Crater had a large lake filling the bottom of the 155 kilometer across crater, perhaps even a series of lakes,” said Michael Meyer, Mars Exploration Program lead scientist at NASA. “This lake was large enough that it could have lasted millions of years, sufficient time for life to get started and thrive, sufficient time for lake sediments to build up and form Mount Sharp.” While scientists are still not sure how long Mars was wet for any given spell through history, they were stunned to find slanted rocks and soil that point to the existence of a lake bed in the crater, said Curiosity project scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. Known as inclined strata, this kind of geological formation is key for understanding how a planet formed but is hard to find distinct examples of,
even on Earth, he told reporters. Curiosity’s pictures and data collected from the Martian soil in the lowest sedimentary layers of Mount Sharp, which reaches a height of about three miles (five kilometers), has helped scientists see the remnants of how rivers once carried sand and silt to the lake, depositing sediment at the mouth of the river. This process would have repeated itself again and again to form a delta. “After the crater filled to a height of at least a few hundred meters and the sediments hardened into rock, the accumulated layers of sediment were sculpted over time into a mountainous shape by wind erosion that carved away the material between the crater perimeter and what is now the edge of the mountain,” NASA said in a statement. Billions of years ago, the planet is believed to have been much warmer, with a thicker atmosphere that would have supported liquid water and potentially some form of life. The latest data “tends to push warm and wet Mars a little later in its history than we previously thought, to about three and a half billion years ago,” give or take a few hundred million years, said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity deputy project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The US$2.5 billion rover has been exploring the area since it landed in Gale Crater in 2012, and has traveled eight km from its touch down site. Grotzinger said “We would like to see if there are times when the lake freshens... That will really begin to tell us about the climate history on Mars at a higher level.” AFP
Highest solar power efficiency rate recorded
Researchers at the University of New South Wales have successfully converted over 40 per cent of the sunlight hitting a series of solar panels into electricty, the highest rate reported. T he r at e worke d largely because of a custom optical bandpass filter that captures sunlight usually wasted in normal solar cells. “We used commercial solar cells, but in a new way, so these efficiency improvements are readily accessible to the solar industry,” said scientist Dr Mark Keevers. The first solar panels in 1989 only had a 20 per cent efficiency rate.

IN BRIEF Independence Day 2 set for 2016
T he c a mera s will begin rolling in May for the sequel to the wildly-popular 1995 film Independence Day as 20th Century Fox officially announced the project last week. According to various reports, the studio is looking to cast the film by February with Roland Emmerich unofficially attached to direct. EXODUS:
GODS AND KINGS
T
here’s a lot to like about Exodus: Gods and Kings. The visuals, the sheer scale of the effects, and the acting all stand out. Even still, I walked out of the theatre more than dissappointed at how such a film, as beautifully shot as it is, could still have a story that decides to drag on until next year. This interpretation of the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, related in the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament, is far reaching and too fragmented for it to be “so bad, it’s good”. Instead, this is just bad with actors who, while delivering solid performances, have a makeup job that is just plain different from scene to scene. Australian actor Joel Edgerton, portraying the villainous Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II, at times looks like he’s truly Middle Eastern and other times he looks just plain tanned and out of place. Same too with Ben Mendelsohn’s Hegep character, as he looks much darker when introduced to the audience than in the rest of the film. It’s no secret that Exodus: Gods and Kings was criticised for having white actors portray darker-skinned characters. With that

aside, Cristian Bale’s portrayal of Moses could haved fooled any blind person. In this film, Moses is a family man, a military general and deeply devoted but flawed with an internal identity conflict because of his background and upbringing. Moses isn’t at all concerned with the plight of the Hebrews early on, until he learns that he is one of them. Bale’s Moses remains relatable all throughout the movie, with his human faults allowing the audience to come to their own conclusions about who this man ultimately became. Past films about the exodus or Moses begin with the baby in the basket story. Ridley Scott, however, begins with Moses as a general and somewhat of a brother to Prince Ramesses. When the Pharaoh and their father-figure Seti I dies, Ramesses is elevated to emperor. Later, he banishes Moses after learning that he is in fact Hebrew. Moses eventually has a fateful encounter with God and the rest, as they say, is history (literally). By far the best part of the film is when the ten plagues ravage Egypt and water turns to blood, darkness blankets the land, and more. There’s a frightening element to each plague that rivals the best horror films. Because of this, the highly-anticipated scene of the parting of the Red Sea is more than underwhelming and loooks like CGI decided to have a slumber party with the film. Overall, Exodus is well-made but has too many flaws to give it more than one watch. It’s worth the admission to watch the ten plagues, but that’s about it. It lacks the emotional depth that the real story has and fails to live up to seemingly realistic expectations.
Kevin Bacon set for Jungle
Director Greg McLean tapped a familiar face for his new survival thriller: Kevin Bacon. The Footloose legend will portray a character based on adventurer Yossi Ghinsberg who was lost in the jungle for three weeks in 1981. Jungle will see Bacon take over a majority of the screentime as he attempts to survive in the unforgiving Bolivian environment. No official release date has been set. McLean and Bacon previously worked together on the horror flick 6 Miranda Drive, which will be released in 2015.
Carano and Lane to join Kickboxer
Former MMA fighter Gina Carano is set to join the cast of the Kickboxer remake, along with Thai/British actress Sara Malakul Lane. The film will see Carano portray a fight promoter and team up with lead actor Alan Moussi, Dave Bautista, and Georges St. Pierre as well as JeanClaude Van Damme, who agreed to take on the role of a martial arts mentor. Lane, meanwhile, will portray Moussi’s love interest. The original 1989 film saw VanDamme portray Kurt Sloan, a fighter who heads to Thailand to learn the secrets of Muay Thai in order to avenge his brother’s beating at the hands of Tong Po.

New Patong club brings Vegas glamour to Asia JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
B
angla Road’s newest attraction is adding a bit of showmanship to the Patong club scene. With flying dancers, Lady Gaga impersonators and an ambition to lead the famous party scene into an entertainment mecca, the owners of the soon-to-be-open Illuzion interactive show and club are placing a big bet that Phuket can become the Las Vegas of Southeast Asia. “The intention is to bring a product to Bangla that is suitable for families and that is not yet on the island, or in Southeast Asia,” said one of the partners of Illuzion, Patrick Catellani. “We want to bring a piece of Las Vegas and Broadway into Thailand with this type of show.” Construction on the 4,000sqm complex sitting on top of Tasmania Pool Lounge is just about done, with plans to open on December 19. Customers buy a ticket – either B1,500 for VIP or B1,000 for general seating – with seating at 10pm. At 10:30pm, the Cirque-du-Soleil style show begins with stunts being per-

formed on hanging-wires, feats of acrobatics on stage, flying trapeze acts, and other death-defying stunts. The show lasts for about an hour and a half before an interactive portion gets the crowd involved and up on their feet. By 1am, the entire show turns into a nightclub complete with a house DJ and several bars. Children under 18 years of age are welcomed up until the club portion. “We don’t want people to feel like the show is over,” Catellani said, describing the show as “Cirque-du-Soleil meets Cocobongos”. The shows will run Wednesday to Sunday, with plans to invite international DJs to rock the house on Mondays and a house band to play covers on Tuesdays. Customers who buy a
ticket may come and go as they please until closing time and there is a discount for tickets after midnight. “This is the first time something has been done in this way because other places, it’s just a show or it’s just a club,” Catellani said. Not content with only a show, however, plans are in place to open an Illuzion restaurant and gift shop in March 2015. Meals will be available to customers during the show. “One of our partners has put on over 85 productions around the world and has 18 years’ experience. “We have performers from all over the world as well, who have been in some of the best shows in Ibiza and Las Vegas. It’s Vegas comes to Asia,” Catellani said.

huket’s newest entertainment venue “Love Nightlife” opened up on top of Jungceylon Shopping Centre in Patong on December 6. Love Nightlife.SkyBar.Rooftop Pool Phuket is the biggest premium 3 level entertainment venue in Patong, dedicated to providing memorable nightlife and beach club experiences. The entertainment destination has a schedule of high-class artists, performers and events planned for high season 2014/15, similar to its sister club Love Nightlife Broadbeach in Australia. The three-level venue features: Love Nightlife, an 800-capacity nightclub on Floor 3; Love Rooftop Pool, a 450-capacity nautical-themed open-air rooftop space with a crystal clear pool; and Love SkyBar, a 90-capacity mezzanine sky platform “presenting a jewel-in-the-crown-style VIP experience” with views of Patong. P
huket International Academy Day School will be hosting their annual theatre production Honk! on December 12 and 13. The play is a modern musical based on the classic ugly duckling story. It follows the life of a duckling before he turns into a beautiful swan and features lots of lively music and dance.
The play involves around 30 students from grades 1-9. Students from grade 11 have also helped with stage management. Artistic Director Colby Hilker said, “The production is sure to be educational, fitting in perfectly with the mission of the school.” The Thai staff will be assisting with hair and makeup, while parents of the students have been helping with the costumes. This production promises
to be a fantastic spin-off from a classic fairytale, adding to the school’s list of successful, creative productions. Their last play was The Wizard of Oz, which was a popular event. Performances are open to the public and tickets are currently on sale at B300 for adults and B150 for children. For further information, contact the PIA reception on 076 336 076.

Aerial Yoga–Unique to Santosa The fluid, gravity-defying twist on yoga shows how we can learn to fly whilst relieving compressed joints and re-aligning the body. The practice uses graceful, trapezelike movements which sometimes seem like acrobatics. A wonderful way to do inversion poses, aerial yoga really is an innovative fitness trend, and Santosa are extremely proud to be the only center in Phuket offering suspended movement in every direction along with stimulation of the organs, muscles and bones. Second straight Super Six championship for PC&H FOOTBALL PH U K E T C ON D O S & Homes claimed their fourth Super Six title last week after finishing in first place with a four-point lead over second place Pita Bar Phuketeers in Division 1. This is PC&H’s second title in a row and have battled

Phuket Condos & homes were crowned Super Six champions once again for the second straight time and fourth all-time following an exciting 14-round season in the league.
hard throughout the season to end up on top of arch rivals Pita Bar Phuketeers. The two teams have finished in the top three the past five super six seasons with Pita Bar taking the Season 6 title while PC&H claiming supremacy in Seasons 4, 5, 7 and now 8. Meanwhile, Division 2 saw Republic take the title and earn promotion to Division 1 next season along with Blue Horizon. Still, the team’s 20+ goal differential is only the second highest in the division to PC&H B’s 21+. In Division 3, TEFL Campus were declared the winners on goal differential over Black
Dragon FC, especially after TEFL defeated the Dragons twice this past season. Both teams will join Division 2 next season. TEFL Campus also scored the second most goals out of all Super Six teams this season with 56. Daohang FC scored the most with 58 goals this season. The King FC and Irish Times will both be relegated to Division 2 next season while Gang Junior and IFC join Division 3 in 2015. Laguna take first scalp in PCG 40-over League CRICKET
Dave Thomas editor2@classactmedia.co
L
aguna avenged last season’s finals loss with a 1st innings win by 52 runs after scoring 176 over Thalang in the season opener of the Phuket Cricket Group’s (PCG) senior league last Sunday (December 7) at the Alan Cooke Ground. Thalang could only manage 124 runs in reply as a new format has been introduced for this season. Teams have an opportunity to achieve an outright win (by bowling another team out twice for less runs than the winning team’s total runs). However, a normal 1st-innings win is also crucial to score points. After winning the toss, Laguna opted to bat first and got off to a steady start, with opener’s Manish Sadarangani (31) and Iqbal Malik (17).
After Malik was bowled out, Sameer Khan (13) and Sadarangani put on another 30 runs, before Khan gifted an easy catch just before the 20 over drinks break at 3 for 80. With the score on 96, one of crickets more unusual dismissals occurred with non-striker Sadarangani being run-out while backing up (“Mankad”) by Thalang captain Bill Stahmer. With Lag una f inding boundaries hard to come by, Ali Khan (40) gave the
innings a boost with four towering 6s (one of which is estimated to have travelled over 100m). Ishmail Mohammed (29 not out) bolstered the innings total to 176 but eventually ran out of batting partners in the 35th over (5 overs short of their allocated 40 overs). Pick of the bowlers for Thalang were Gary Lane (3 for 38), Sam Ali (2 for 10) and Anthony Dupont (2 for 31). Laguna struck a blow early on, removing openers Anthony
Du Pont (2) and Bill Stahmer (6), and had Thalang at 2 for 15 with an inspired early spell of bowling from Iqbal Malik. They struck again removing Gary Lane (9) in the 7th over with Thalang at 3 for 26. Thai youngster Pao (36) and Simon Wetherell (19) steadied the innings for Thalang with a 35 run partnership until Wetherell fell in the 14th over at 4 for 61. Pao then combined with Craig Murphy (10) to put on a further 30 runs before a communication
mix up saw Murphy run out at 5 for 91. With 23 overs in hand, Thalang only required 4 runs per over, but they could not afford to lose more wickets. After a spirited partnership of 17 runs between Pao and fellow Thai youngster Karn, Laguna managed to contain the rest of the Thalang batsmen, bowling them out in the 35th over for 124. With only 7 overs remaining in the days play, Laguna did not enforce the follow on
(where the 1st innings lead is 50 runs or more) as an outright result was deemed unlikely. This Sunday (December 14), arch rivals Patong take on ICC at the ACG in Thalang. Start time is 10am. Ayone interested in getting involved with cricket in Phuket can email the Phuket Cricket Group Chairman at chairman@phuketcricketgroup. com, or visit www.phuketcricketgroup.com for more information.
Smith raises ton in 1st Test vs India CRICKET STEVE SMITH RAISED his fifth Test century and saluted his fallen Australia team-mate Phillip Hughes in between frustrating rain delays on the second day of the opening Test against India on Wednesday (December 10). Smith clipped the first ball after lunch for two to bring up his hundred, touching
off more tributes to Hughes who was fatally struck by a bouncer in a domestic game late last month. He jogged away from the wicket and pointed towards the ‘408’ – Hughes’s Test cap number – painted on the playing surface and then raised his bat and looked skywards in tribute to the batsman. Smith then shared another long hug with batting partner Michael Clarke, who was also
at the wicket when David Warner reached his century on day one. The emotion continued when the crowd broke out into applause when the Australian total reached 408. When rain forced the players from the field for a second time on day two, the home side were 423 for six with Smith unbeaten on 103 and Clarke nearing his 28th Test century on 98. AFP thephuketnews

Watson seeking another Asian title, eyes Thailand GOLF
R
eig ning Masters champion Bubba Watson is hoping to add another international trophy to his collection after the Thailand Golf Championship at Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi on Thursday (December 11). It is the big-hitting left-
hander’s third appearance at the US$1 million Asian Tour f lagship event and after finishing runner-up and joint 30th in the past two years, he is hoping to make it third time lucky. The 36-year-old Watson enjoyed his first tournament victory outside the US at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, last month and it has made him hun-
gry for more international victories. “The win in China has given me the confidence that I can win outside the USA,” said the world number four, who also won the Masters in 2012. “It was pretty special.” Watson heads a starstudded field which includes Spain’s defending champion Sergio Garcia, reigning US Open champion Martin
Kaymer of Germany and England’s Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood, winner of the Thai title in 2012. Garcia, who is still recovering from flu symptoms, said he was looking forward to defending his title. “It’s always fun playing in Thailand. I like the people and I like this course,” he said. AFP
Juve through, but hope to avoid Fab Four FOOTBALL
Roma join City and Real in Aussie tourney FOOTBALL ITALIAN GIANTS ROMA will join Manchester City and Real Madrid in next year’s International Champions Cup (ICC) in Melbourne, organisers said last week. The three-time Serie A champions round out the three teams taking part in the tournament at the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground from July 18-24. “We had an excellent experience in last year’s ICC in the United States and are confident this tournament will also be a great success with top-notch competition, “ said Roma chief executive Italo Zanzi. “We very much look forward to playing in Melbourne and interacting with fans in the city, Australia and the region.” Organisers are looking to build on the local appetite for top European teams after a crowd of 95,000 watched Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at the MCG last year. The tournament will kickoff with Real Madrid facing Roma on July 18, followed by Manchester City against the Italians three days later. It wraps up with City playing Real Madrid on July 24. AFP @thephuketnews
MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI is hoping Juventus avoid being drawn with one of the four European giants tipped to win this season’s Champions League after seeing his side scrape into the last 16 on Tuesday (December 9). On a freezing night in Turin, Juve dominated last season’s beaten finalists Atletico Madrid but failed to even threaten winning by the two-goal margin that would
have helped snatch top spot in Group A. Atletico survived a firsthalf onslaught to hold on for a 0-0 draw and finish top of the group on 13 points. Juve finished second on 10 points, booking their entry to the last 16 for the first time since a quarter-final exit to eventual winners Bayern Munich in 2013. Allegri admits meeting Bayern, Chelsea, Real Madrid or Barcelona in the knockout phase is bottom of his Christmas wish list.

“There are three or four teams – Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern and Real Madrid, for example – who are a cut above the rest,” Allegri told reporters after the match. “For now, we’re in the last 16 and we’ll just see what happens when we get to the draw because we can’t change anything.” Other teams that have reached the knockout phase are Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Monaco, and Swiss club Basel. McIlroy wins Golf Writers Trophy GOLF WORLD NUMBER ONE Rory McIlroy won the Golf Writers Trophy for the second time in three years after a season that saw him win two major championships and help Europe to Ryder Cup success. The 25-year-old Northern Irishman was the overwhelming choice for the prestigious
award following votes cast by members of the Association of Golf Writers. “To win again in 2014 is testimony to what has been a
truly fabulous year,” he said. In addition to the Open Championship and US PGA Championship, McIlroy also won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Newcastle United’s Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse (C) scores the opening goal past Chelsea’s Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois (L) during the English Premier League football match between Newcastle United and Chelsea at St James’ Park. Photo: AFP/Ian Macnicol
Cisse dashes Chelsea’s invincible EPL dream C helsea were denied a club-record 24-game unbeaten run as Papiss Cisse’s second-half double earned Newcastle United a stunning 2-1 win over the Premier League leaders last Saturday (December 6). For the second successive weekend, Jose Mourinho’s side struggled in the northeast, as Alan Pardew’s Newcastle recorded a third consecutive home win against the title favourites. Defeat prevented Chelsea from going nine points clear at the league summit and opened Manchester City’s opportunity to trim their lead to three points with their 1-0 home win gainst Everton later on Saturday. Newcastle appeared to have been fired up by Mourinho’s pre-match assertion that they seem to save their finest performances for matches against the west London side. They elected not to adopt the ultra-defensive tactics employed by their neighbours Sunderland, who had held
Chelsea to a 0-0 draw last weekend, and were rewarded as Cisse came off the bench to score twice. A late Didier Drogba effort ensured a nerve-wracking final seven minutes — plus six minutes of added time — for the hosts, who lost defender Steven Taylor to a second yellow card. After the match, Mourinho accused the St James’ Park ball boys of taking too long to return the ball after his side’s 2-1 loss. “The referee can’t punish the ball boy who disappeared with the ball, the referee couldn’t punish the people in the crowd who kept the ball.” Meanwhile, City capitalised on Chelsea’s defeat to halve the London club’s advantage at the summit thanks to Yaya Toure’s 24th-minute penalty in their 1-0 win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium. However, the points came at a price for the champions after a knee injury to Aguero early in the game saw him withdrawn in visible distress.
The injury to Aguero occurred in the second minute when he jarred his left knee awkwardly as he stretched for the ball on the edge of the Everton penalty area. The Argentina international, who had scored 11 goals in his previous nine league games, limped off with tears in his eyes and was replaced by 18-year-old striker Jose Pozo. Arsenal endured more misery at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday (December 6) as Stoke hung on for a deserved 3-2 victory to place fresh pressure on manager Arsene Wenger. The Gunners had trailed 3-0 at the interval following a catastrophic first-half display, particularly in defence, and Wenger, whose back four included 19-year-old Hector Bellerin, conceded the absence of key personnel had affected his side. “We gave them a thoroughly good present (with Peter Crouch scoring after just 19 seconds) and after that put a lot of energy into the game,” Wenger said. A point would have flattered Wenger’s team, however, as they missed the chance to make up ground on Premier League leaders Chelsea following their defeat earlier in the day. They remain 13 points adrift of top spot and have won just once in eight league visits to the Britannia Stadium. On Monday (December 8) Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal conceded that he was indebted to Robin
van Persie after the Dutch striker’s brace earned his below-par side a 2-1 victory at Southampton. United prevailed at St Mary’s despite an error-strewn display in which they mustered only three attempts at goal, with Van Persie netting either side of Graziano Pelle’s firsthalf equaliser. It gave United a fifth consecutive win and sent them up to third place in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s home game with old enemies Liverpool. AFP

IOC allows two country games, lifts sports limit T
he International Olympic Committee last Monday (December 8) unanimously passed 40 sweeping reforms proposed by president Thomas Bach that will allow the Olympics to be staged in two countries, add new sports and creates a new Games television channel. The changes are part of a push by Bach to make the world’s biggest sporting event cheaper to stage and more attractive, as well as bolster the credibility of the IOC. The IOC will start immediate talks with organisers of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea, and the Tokyo 2020 Games to see if they can make savings and possibly add sports. Bach put his 40 Agenda 2020 proposals to a special session of the 104 member IOC in Monaco and all were
passed on the first of the two day meeting. The IOC allowed for future Games to be hosted by two cities, or two countries, for “sustainability” and “geography” reasons. But he stressed there would have to be “exceptional” cir-
cumstances to move away from the single city formula used for the past century. The IOC says it wants more talks with candidate cities on how the Olympics can be made more sustainable, particularly by using existing and temporary facilities.
Host cities will also be allowed to suggest a one-off extra sport to the programme, which would have to be approved by the IOC. Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Games are pressing for the inclusion of baseball, softball and squash. But the number of athletes
will be capped at 10,500 for the Summer Olympics and 2,900 for the Winter Games, which means that if new sports are added, other sports will have to cut the number of medal events. There were 26 sports at the London Olympics in 2012, but Franco Carraro, who led
the working group on sports, said there could be up to 30 sports at future Games. An Olympic television channel could be launched as early as next year after the IOC gave overwhelming backing to the plan. Estimated to cost about US$550 million over seven years, the 24-hour Olympic channel will show sports, but not live coverage of the Games. Amongst other key decisions taken was to force IOC members to stand down at 80. That could mean controversial FIFA boss Sepp Blatter leaving the IOC in two years when he reaches the cutoff age. Bach has warned that the IOC had to bolster its credibility and transform the Olympics. “If we do not address these challenges here and now we will be hit by them very soon,” Bach said. AFP

Berry’s illness in a statement last week, a fortnight after he was placed on the non-football illness list after the discovery of a mass in the right side of his chest. Further evaluation led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. “This is a diagnosis that is very treatable and potentially cur-
able with standard chemotherapy approaches,” said Christopher R. Flowers, the director of Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute lymphoma program. “The goal of Mr. Berry’s treatment is to cure his lymphoma and we are beginning that treatment now.” Berry said in a statement issued through the Chiefs that he
and his family “are very grateful for the amount of support we have received over the last couple of weeks.” “I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement, the blessings and well wishes,” said the 25-year-old, who made the Pro Bowl three times in his first four NFL seasons. PHUKET KING’S CUP WRAPS UP RACES SAILING
Phuket King’s Cup editor2@classactmedia.co.th
T
he 28th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta ended with a royal flourish and 10 knots of breeze Most of the divisions were pretty much decided by Friday (December 5). A notable exception was the Firefly 850 Sports catamaran class where there was everything to play for right down to the last race on Saturday (December 6). At the start of the day Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo and Neil Ayre’s Advanced Racing were sitting level on 13 points after drops, with Twin Sharks (John Newnham) only two points adrift. After two races on the closing day, it was Voodoo (3,1) and Twin Sharks (1,2) on 17, and Advanced Racing with 18 points. Voodoo and Sharks were both tied on two bullets apiece, so the countback went to second places - Voodoo 4, Sharks 3. After a series of close races between Beau Geste (Karl Kwok) and HiFi (Neil Pryde), and going in to the last day with a two-point lead, Beau Geste cemented their overall win with a bullet to start the day, and then declined the last race. Well done Beau Geste, which
hasn’t raced in Asia for 14 years. No surprises in IRC 1 where Island Fling took 1, 2 to finish at the top of the list by 4 points from EFG Mandrake. The Mandrake was getting the hang of it as the regatta progressed – 4,1,4,4
for the first four races, and ones and twos at the end. The IRC 2 division was an even more open and shut affair with TBG-Team Premier (Hannes Waimer) rolling in to the last day with a 10-point lead over Foxy Lady, score a third the first race (their
worst score all week), and then go home. Greg Reynolds’ Mumm 30, Foreign Affair, dominated the IRC 3 all week, winning by 9 points after 10 races and leaving Peter Dyer’s Madame Butterfly in second place. In addition to the races, this was also a great year for Russian sailing. In 2009 there were four Russian entries in the King’s Cup – this year there were 23, including 16 in the Bareboat and Charter classes. Weather conditions mean that 2014 is unlikely to go down in the history books as a vintage year for the Phuket King’s Cup. A light start to the week, one day’s racing abandoned for the Racing divisions, the use of the reserve day, and then an upbeat finish. Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the event has been held every year since, during the first week of December. Under Royal Patronage, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organized by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.
