n a frightening indication of just how lawless some people in Phuket are, police seized more than 1,000 firearms, knives, packets of drugs and other contraband items in the week from November 1 to 7, which they showed off to the media on Tuesday (November 11). Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit

explained, “Recently, there were several cases of people using weapons to attack or try to kill others, or to destroy properties. The police have been cracking down on these things with the aim of decreasing the number of criminals in Phuket to ensure tourists’ safety during that period,” said. “The week included the Patong Carnival marking the arrival of the high season (November 1-3), the Loy Krathong Festival (November 6-8) and there are in addition the

upcoming Asian Beach Games from November 14 to 23. “We must ensure that the crimes decrease so that tourists will be more confident,” he added. During the drive, 297 people were arrested in connection with 250 cases. Of these, 85 cases involved the seizure of weapons – 35 firearms, 138 rounds of ammunition, four shotgun shells, 46 knives, two sets of brass knuckles and an axe. A total of 181 people were arrested

in 134 cases involving drugs. Police seized 2,213 methamphetamine pills, 473.11 grams of crystal methamphetamine, just over a kilo of marijuana, 79.4 kilos of kratom leaves, 13 bottles of 4x100 cocktail (a mixture containing kratom and cough syrup) and 53 packages of the restricted sedative Diazepam. Among other items seized were 86 packages of fireworks, 638 sky lanterns and hundreds of pirated branded items.

Army-Navy tension over Nai Yang beach demolition eased in talks > page 8

String of meetings promotes beach business compromises

Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th

fficials have attended a chain of meetings over the past week to discuss the businesses affected by the beach clean-up and ways they can help outof-work people. The first meeting was on November 5 and focused on people who used to be in the three beach jobs most affected in Thalang District: beach chair rental, beach massage and food and beverage sales. “First of all, we discussed the masseuses. There are 259 masseuses registered (with the various OrBorTor in Thalang) and hotels have agreed to help them,” said Vice-Governor Jamroen Thippayapongtada, chairing the meeting.

O

Flashback to June when Ma’ann Samran and V/Gov Jamroen talked with Surin Beach masseuses, who still want to set up on the beach. He announced that a limited number of vendors will be allowed to work on the beaches – a total of 80. “They must be residents from the area only

and must be registered with the OrBorTor,” he said. Beach chair renters will not, however, be allowed back on the sand, said V/Gov Jamroen.

“All the beach chair operators and masseuses have agreed except for those at Surin Beach because the area along that beach has a NorSorLor [community land] paper. We are still waiting for a decision by the court on this.” In the meeting, the chief executive of Cherng Talay OrBorTor, Ma’ann Samran, said he felt there was no need for chairs on the beach because “no one has been affected by the clean-up”. That statement resulted in a call for a protest by beach chair operators, which was cancelled when it was pointed out that this would contravene martial law. On November 6, officials tried to broker an agreement for the beaches in Muang District, such as Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata and Karon. “Normally, we don’t allow vendors to work on the beach,” said Rawai Mayor Arun Soros. “I want to focus on the masseuses and beach chair operators because they are the ones who are suffering. “The masseuses are aware they are welcome to work in the hotels, but because they are

used to working for themselves, they may not want to. “Besides, we don’t have enough hotels in the area to help all the 209 masseuses from Rawai and Nai Harn beaches,” said Mr Arun. He suggested using a grove of casuarina trees (which also holds a Nor Sor Lor land paper), near Nai Harn Beach, for the masseuses to work in temporarily. The idea was accepted by the other officials in the meeting and will be taken into consideration. Despite the Army-ordered beach clearance, Mr Arun said umbrellas are allowed on the beach temporarily and mats or mattresses can be rented or sold by local vendors. However, masseuses in Kata and Karon have asked to be allowed to continue doing business on the beach. Muang District Chief Pakpoom Intarasuwan said in the meeting that many hotels in Kata and Karon are welcoming local masseuses to work for them, but the masseuses have all rejected the idea. Summing up the ideas from the meeting, V/Gov Jamroen said, “There will be no beach

vendors left in [Muang District] – only masseuses and beach chair operators. “Masseuses will work in an area specified by the local OrBorTor. The OrBorTor will rent out umbrellas, while local operators will be allowed to sell or rent mattresses or mats.” These will not be set out on the beach but must be carried there by customers. The final meeting, about beaches in Kathu, took place last Friday (November 7), and was chaired by Muang District Chief Mr Pakpoom. Chalermluck Kebsab, Patong Mayor, said afterwards, “The area for beach chairs and massage services will be smaller and limited in specified zones. There will be more public space managed by the local authority.” On Monday (November 10) Palat Jantarasopin, chief of Phuket Tourism Operator Association, told The Phuket News, “The final decisions will be presented at another meeting this week. “It’s great that the authorities have acknowledged the need to help the people affected by the beach clean-up,” he said.

Guns and drugs go on display Continued form page 1. Asked to estimate how many illegal firearms there are in Phuket, he answered that it was impossible to even know whether the number was in the hundreds or the thousands. “More and more are being brought in. There are many ways that illegal firearms can be brought into Phuket and they are very cheap

– about B2,000 per gun. Most are imported from Pattalung Province,” Gen Patchara told The Phuket News. “Although we have finished this crackdown period, police will continue to keep an eye out and suppress criminality, especially during the high season and the Asian Beach Games,” he added.

B Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong and Highways Department officials inspect construction progress at the Lotus and Darasamuth intersections.

More underpass lanes will open for Asian Beach Games ALL THREE LANES OF The Darasamuth underpass will be temporarily opened to two-way traffic for the Asian Beach Games, Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong announced on Saturday (November 8). Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong made the announcement after inspecting progress of construction work on the underpass and connecting intersections with Highways Department director Samak Lerdwong and Phuket Police Deputy Commissioner Col Sakchai Limjalern. Both sides of the road will be cleared to let the traffic flow. All tools and construction materials will be removed and extra lighting added as a safety precaution during the beach games from November 14 to 23, said Gov Nisit. The 10-day break in con-

Prapaiwut Cheunyuan, Phuket life guard consultant, told The Phuket News, “We haven’t used the current Kata Noi tower for a while because the base of the tower is broken. “A safety surfboard was lost from the Patong lifeguard tower recently. It would be great if we could store equipment in the new tower and keep it safe.” OrBorTor chief Paiboon Upatising confirmed, “We decided to approve the lifeguard tower plan at Kata Noi. “We have already taken down the old tower. Construction plans for the new tower will commence sometime this year.” @thephuketnews

struction during the games will not delay the promised opening of the underpass by New Year, said the Highways Department director. The officials also evaluated traffic flow at the Bangkoo intersection, at the north end of the bypass road, in order to plan how best to deal with the extra road traffic expected during the games. About 6,000 participants are expected to be in Phuket for the games, including 2,700 athletes and 1,700 judges. Thousands more spectators are also expected to attend. As part of the official initiative to beautify Phuket ahead of the games, municipality officials have been meeting with local shop owners, street vendors and residents to encourage them to help keep the streets clean and presentable while the games are on.

oat operators on Monday (November 10) voted in favour of the new bad weather red-flag system but were also unanimous in wanting advance warning so that they can turn down customers before they arrive at the quay. They also decided to set up a boat association – essentially a cartel – to improve safety and service and get rid of dangerous price cutting. More than 100 boat operators attended the packed meeting at the Phuket Marine Office – 60 were expected – after red flags were raised for the first time on Saturday and Sunday (November 8 and 9), forbidding boats from going out to sea. Phuket Marine Chief, Phuriphat Teerakulpisut, said, “If it had not been necessary, I would not have announced it. Last night I got a lot of phone calls from you asking about this. My phone was red hot. “But I don’t mind because receiving a lot of phone calls is better than worrying about tourists’ lives when boats leave shore in bad weather. “I would like to repeat that the Governor [Nisit Jansomwong] approved the establishment of a committee to make decisions about boats leaving shore in dangerous weather,” he said.

One boat operator, Krissada Pichetpongsanon, owner of Andavaree Co, asked that the distance a boat intended to go should be taken into consideration. “ Fo r e x a m ple , f r o m Chalong Pier to Koh Lone is not far. I think officials should allow boats to go short distances [in poor weather],” he said. Mr Phuriphat answered that in the future, he will be more specific about areas where the prohibition applies

and give more detail about when the red flag warning will be given. “For example, from Yacht Haven to Phang Nga Bay, it might show a green flag while all the other piers for boats going to the Bay might have red flags,” he added. One of the boat operators urged Mr Phuriphat to announce the red flag two or three days in advance, and not to change the decision even if the weather improves. “If you announce that there

will be a red flag on such and such a date [for a particular route], then we will not sell packages [on that route] to customers. We can offer alternative packages instead,” he said. With no one opposing this idea, Mr Phuriphat said it would be done. He also added, “I have heard about some boat crew members being drug addicts. I beg you all not to hire them, even if you have no choice. It’s central to our tourism image.”

ith the number of new cars and bikes on Phuket’s roads increasing by 500 to 700 a month, the Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office (PLTO) is to introduce a new, more comprehensive training course for learner drivers. Currently, learner drivers have to undergo four hours of classroom training before being allowed to take their driving test. From next year that will increase to eight hours, Teerayut Prasertpol, Chief of the PLTO, told The Phuket News on Monday (November 10). Thatthiya Thisatthayaphitak, the PLTO’s Driving License Adviser said, “We will have higher quality training

for new drivers.” The training will consist of watching road safety and rules-of-the-road videos, along with lectures. It will not include actually driving on roads or

on the PLTO’s track. The number of people the PLTO will accept for driver training each week will be halved, said Ms Thatthiya, from the current 300 to 150.

However, the PLTO has already signed a memoranda of understanding with Rajabhat University Phuket and Chotima Driving School who will offer the same driver training. The PLTO has already made passing the driving test more difficult by introducing a more comprehensive multiple-choice on-screen questionnaire in June, with a higher percentage of correct answers required. Whereas in the past people had to get 22 answers right out of 30 questions (73 per cent), from June 1 the number of questions rose to 50, with a score of 45 (90 per cent) required in order to pass. From next year the practical part will be monitored by an array of lasers that will check the driver’s exact position anywhere on the track.

Lightning fries Phuket speed cams TWO OF THE ISLAND’S FOUR speed cameras have been broken for several months after they were hit by lightning. The two cameras, one near the Muang Thalang School and the other near the Kor Ane curve on Thepkrassattree Rd, are awaiting repairs by

a technician from Bangkok, who is expected to arrive soon. The Thalang camera previously had snapped pictures of 2,100 people exceeding the speed limit. Lt Col Sarawut Meeboon, Deputy Superintendent of Thalang Police also said the Kor Ane camera caught just 12

people. “Only a few people were caught because it is installed at the curve, where no one drives fast,” (After a woman on a motorbike was killed at the bend, local people blocked the road, forcing the installation of Himalayan speed bumps that deter speeding on the bend.)

THE PROPOSAL FOR A mega concert on Kata Beach, the Maya Music Festival, has been withdrawn. Actor Krit Sripoomseth, who presented the idea to Phuket authorities on October 28, told The Phuket News, “We’ve cancelled the concert already and we plan to move it to Bangkok. There is no problem here now.” The decision came after a cold reception from local authorities at the October 28 presentation, especially about holding a commercial event on a public beach so soon after local business operators had been expelled from beaches around Phuket for doing business on the sand. In light of this opposition, the mega concert has been moved to Bangkok. thephuketnews

n a high-speed chase reminiscent of the scene in The Bourne Identity, four armed members of a drug gang were arrested on November 5 after they crashed in Thalang while being pursued by police. At 9:45am, as part of the crime and drug suppression campaign leading up to the Loy Kratong Festival, Thalang police set up a security checkpoint on the Old Airport Rd in Thepkrassatri, stopping vehicles to check for illegal items. A blue Isuzu truck registered in Trang was signalled to stop but instead the driver accelerated and blasted through the check point at high speed. Lt Suchart Leucha, accompanied by a subordinate, gave chase in a police pick-up. Lt Suchart ordered his man to shoot out the tyres on the truck ahead but the shots missed, hitting the back of the truck instead.

A SLAUGHTER HOUSE worker who was arrested for robbing a 7-Eleven store on November 5 promptly admitted it, explaining that he stole the money to pay for a prostitute’s services. Vichit Police were called by staff of the store in Baan Borae after the man walked in and told staff member Palakorn Roonsri, “Give me B1,000.” Mr Palakorn said, “A darkskinned guy wearing a light blue T-shirt, jeans ripped at the knees, and white shoes, came in carrying a 12-inch knife in his right hand, and demanded B1,000.” There were three staff on duty at the time, Mr Palakorn said, but the other two were in the store room so he was on his own in the shop. “I was so frightened I decided to give him the money,” he said. A CCTV camera in the shop caught clear images of the robber’s face and police quickly identified him as Boonlert Limpananon, 37. They found him at home with his knife. Boonlert told the police, “I @thephuketnews

More police arrived at the scene and arrested the four occupants of the truck who gave up without a fight – which was just as well since a search of the vehicle uncovered a homemade pistol and a pump-action

shotgun with five shells. The search also turned up three bags of crystal methamphetamine (ya ice) together weighing 60 grams, and a set of scales. The four men were identified as Chinnawat Prampri, 24 (the driver), Pornchai Shaitung, 32 (who took the whack over the head from the mob), Detnarong Sangjan, 29, and

“Toon”, 25. They were taken to Thalang Police Station for interrogation by the Phuket anti-narcotics squad headed by Col Arayapan Pukbaokhaw. Col Arayapan said afterwards that Pornchai had admitted that the two guns and the ya ice belonged to him. “I bought the drugs for B20,000 in Thalang for me and my friends to use,” he said. “The guns were for my protection. “We were driving around looking for my girlfriend, who is upset with me, and we drove through the roadblock to avoid being searched,” Pornchai said. Police were not entirely convinced; they believe the four suspects were “up to no good” and probably “had big plans” that were thwarted by the chase, crash and arrests. Police learned that Pornchai was only recently released from Phuket Prison where he was serving time for robbery, and the other three all had arrest records for drug possession.

Shooting range makes changes after windows are smashed Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th

T

he owner of the Kathu shooting range near the bottom of Patong Hill has promised to make changes to boost safety after bullets went through the windows of nearby houses. A team led by Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak investigated the range on Tuesday (November 11) after complaints from the householders about bullet and shotgun pellets shattering their windows. The householders also complained about the sound of gunfire late at night and

early in the morning. Three of the householders, led by Jamnien Rodkham, reported the breaking of the windows to Thung Thong police and the Damrongtham Centre. They said they believed the shots had come from the range. After the inspection, V/ Gov Somkiet said, “At the back we found an old shooting range that has been closed for eight years, but people must be sneaking inside to use it, making noise during the hours the range is still closed. “As for the pellets that destroyed villagers’ windows, the owner of the shooting range must check with the CCTV

footage how that happened and who was doing the shooting. “Also, the shooting range

must be more strict about their rules. There must be a trainer with every customer at

all times during the shooting because some customers are not well trained.” Phakorn Phaisarnsintuwong, owner of the range, explained to The Phuket News about one incident. “A house was damaged by bullets in September when there was a training session for an official group of volunteers at the range. “Normally we do not allow customers to use M16 [assault rifles]; the most powerful guns here are shotguns. But that day the volunteers used M16s for official training. “After receiving the complaint, I sent staff to repair the broken windows and moved

all training of official groups to our Thalang shooting range because it is near the mountains, not houses,” he said. There had been no training sessions with M16s in Kathu since October 5, he said, promising to examine CCTV footage to check what happened on October 11 when the three houses were hit. He said he had now fenced in the area and ordered staff members to sleep there to deter intruders. “We open for business at 9am and close at 6pm but that area was accessible 24/7, so I put some staff to monitor it at night and erected a fence to block the way into the back.”

Gun culture meets mythology in ancient wat TWO STATUES OF YAK – mythical Thai giants – have been erected at the 500-yearold Wat Pranang Sang in Thalang. But these Yak – a male and a female – are thoroughly up to date. Instead of the

traditional cudgels, the female is armed with a sniper rifle while he carries an M16 assault rifle. Both also have hand grenades and pistols. Luang Phor Vijit Suphakan, abbot of Wat Pranang Sang, told The Phuket News,

“It was my idea. I decided the Yak statue must be brought up to date. “It is only in this temple [that there are Yak with modern weapons],” he said, explaining that the traditional cudgels carried by Yak

are no longer a deterrent to bad spirits and are not scary enough to stop people doing bad things. “To be scary they have to have modern weapons for the modern age,” he said with a laugh.

Luang Phor Vijit is now moving on to his next project which he has already started: a giant statue of famed Phuket monk Luang Phor Chaem. It will be the biggest statue in Phuket of the venerated abbot, he said, costing B12 million.

Talks defuse Army-Navy tension over demolition Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

T

he Beach Club at Nai Yang and the neighbouring Baan Bussaba restaurant will definitely be demolished, eventually, the senior Royal Thai Army officer in Phuket said on Wednesday (November 12). Col Thakarin Intornkhai made the statement by way of clarification after confusion over the restaurant’s demolition that was supposed to take place last Friday (November 7). On that day the Royal Thai Navy arrived to support local officials who planned to demolish the two places – the normal procedure. But as OrBorTor staff carried furniture out of the Beach Club – over the vehement protests of owner Aroon Paewpanchoo, who attempted to block their work with his pickup truck – a dozen Army troops arrived, led by Col Thakarin of the Army’s 41st Circle – who recently replaced Col Somchai Ponatong as the man to “look after” Phuket on

Army Col Thakarin Intornkhai: ‘I started working for Phuket on Friday. I have to learn more.’ behalf of the National Council for Peace and Order. Their arrival was followed by that of Thalang District Chief Supot Chanakit. Both appeared to take the side of Mr Aroon, asking the OrBorTor to stop. OrBorTor Sakoo Vice President Surin Yotarak insisted, however, on demolishing the buildings, neither of which had a building permit, and both of

which were built on public land. (An application by Mr Aroon to stop the demolition was recently rejected by the provincial court, triggering the decision to knock the two restaurants down.) All parties then went into a closed-door meeting, after which it was announced that the demolition would be postponed until after the Asian Beach Games so that there would

not be an unsightly demolition site a kilometre from where some of the sports events will take place. Governor Nisit Jansomwong called a meeting on Wednesday that included the Army, the Navy, Phuket Provincial Police commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit and a variety of bureaucrats involved in the tangled case, to try to come to a resolution. Again, the press were excluded. After the meeting, Col Thakarin explained, “It was a misunderstanding. At that time we understood that the restaurant owner had appealed to the court. That’s why I decided to order demolition postponed.” “Later, however, I learned that [Mr Aroon] had appealed to the Phuket Provincial Government – not the Appeals Court – so I think the demolition will continue.” The date for the demolition will be set by Phuket ViceGovernor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak, he said. Col Thakarin also admitted that he is new in Phuket, “I just started working for

Phuket on Friday, and that was my first job – I have to learn more about Phuket from Col Somchai.” After that Gov Nisit and Gen Patchara emerged together from the meeting room. Gen Patchara made no comment but the governor said, “Gen Patchara will take legal steps to lay a criminal case for public land encroachment if the owner does not cooperate. The Beach Club and Baan Bussaba were examined by no fewer than seven government departments in Phuket – the Land Office, the Thalang District Office, the Royal Forestry Department, the Department of National Parks, OrBorTor Sakoo, the police and the Navy – all of whom concluded that the two restaurants sit on public land. “We found they encroached on public land and we will demolish them in the end,” Gov Nisit added. “Obviously [claiming the restaurants are legal] is nonsense: all of the buildings in the row have been demolished apart from these two.”

Jensen was handed over to the Immigration Police.

Tax-dodging Dane to be sent back home soon POLICE ON NOVEMBER 6 arrested a Danish man they found living in Thailand without a valid visa. He will be sent back home to Denmark – where he is wanted for evading taxes totalling the equivalent of B53 million. After a photo was circulated to police he was spotted in a local restaurant in Pa Khlok. Records showed that he had been in Thailand illegally since April 24 last year. Jensen admitted being in the country illegally and was taken to the Immigration Police station. He is expected to be extradited soon.

Heated debate over beaches

W

hen the NCPO began the clean up of Phuket’s beaches, ridding them of vendors, massage beds and beach chairs, the results were startling. Within a few days, the island’s popular tourist beaches – once crowded with branded umbrellas several rows deep – were quickly returned to their natural state. On the surface, the solution seemed like a simple one: to end the grip certain influential people had on controlling private enterprise on the public beaches. However, the repercussions have been complex and far reaching, affecting hundreds of locals just trying to earn a living, as well as thousands of tourists from around the world who had become accustomed to the plethora of goods and services on hand without having to leave the comfort of their deck chairs by the sea.

Of course, those who did work the beaches would ferociously defend their territories and the word ‘mafia’ became synonymous with those who were permitted to ply their trade. Hoteliers would struggle to find compromises with stubborn beach chair operators parked right in front of their resorts and sometimes guests would find themselves in the middle of these conflicts. Since the clean up, local officials have met with former beach vendors several times to find some kind of compromise or at least help them find alternative sources of income. Hundreds of masseuse have found new jobs at beachfront hotels but there are hundreds more who have not been able to, or refuse, to adjust. In September, the former vice president of Patong Beach Sunbed and Umbrella Club committed suicide. He had

reportedly been suffering from depression since losing his job. He and many of the other people making a living from businesses at the beaches had been doing so for decades; some more than 40 years. The reaction from regular tourists has been mixed. Some welcome the change and marvel at the new back-to-nature look of the beaches. Others now refuse to return if their usual shaded spot on the sand is no longer available. To survey where readers stand on the issue, The Phuket News has launched a new poll. So what’s your opinion? Should the beaches remain clear of beach chairs or should they be brought back, and if so, should they be put in special zones? Is it possible to find a fair and balanced solution where everyone benefits or do you sympathize with both sides?

BEACHES ARE FOR EVERYONE!

[Re: Phuket Q&A: When will beach chairs make a comeback?] I am very sad, as is my my wife. We have been to Phuket more than 20 times, and stay in Patong. B100 for a chair with umbrella all day is not expensive, but to cook in the sun sitting on a towel is not why we go to Phuket. Massage on the beach has been one of the things we look forward to on holiday. Bali has chairs and massage and is cheaper than Phuket too. Griccy [Re: Phuket talks move towards beach business compromises] Rawai Mayor’s relatives are all beach chair operators at Nai Harn Beach. No surprise for all these proposals. Madia [Re: POLL: Should beachchair, umbrella and massage services be allowed back onto Phuket beaches?] Beaches should be clear for the most part, but there can be limited numbers for seniors, and the income should go to benefit public, not for any

individuals. Anyone can bring his/her beach chair to sit on, and take it back when not use. Coffee Beach chairs should be available on request, not already placed along the beach, otherwise a ‘territory mafia’ will start again. Also, the business should be assigned randomly, not always by the same people; parents, friends and so on. Rumak [Re: Jobless Phuket beach vendors urged to register] Today, many business operators are unable to find staff, so local folks moaning week after week are like children crying for candies. What they want is to avoid paying tax and to have direct contact with tourists to sell tours for huge commissions, and without TAT licenses. By permitting those local folks to work on beaches, the losers will be the shop owners that are renting shops, paying taxes and salaries year round. Charlie

I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT

[Re: Phuket tour boat opera-

tors vote for major changes] Does this mean that the boats will need proper annual inspections and safety certificates? Will the captains require a proper internationally recognised commercial captain’s certificate and a training programme for the crew? This is the only way you are going to improve safety providing that it’s properly policed! I’ll believe this when it happens. They have obviously not heard of free competition and free trade. Cartels are illegal in most civilised countries! Looks like the poor tourist will be at the sharp end again! Kanaloa

EVERYONE CAN BE THE SOLUTION

[Re: Phuket students adopt ‘Green Road’ to beautify school neighbourhood] A terrific idea. I do this on a small stretch of my street where I walk my dogs. Feels good taking control of a real problem.

DOUBLE STANDARDS FOR BOAT SAFETY

[Re: B40mn approved to com-

plete Phuket AIS network] Foreign boat owners who don’t cause any problems and inject a lot of money into the Thai economy were given 30 days to install AIS systems, but operators of speed boats, the vessels killing tourists, are not asked to install the systems. Am I missing something? To change the jet-ski laws, it seems, will take a long time but we are given 30 days to install expensive, complicated equipment. Confused Kevin.

CUTTING LONG AIRPORT QUEUES

[Re: Phuket airport immigration deny ‘B100 fast track through Ebola line’] On Thursday evening, between 6.30-7pm at immigration, queues 4,5,6,7 and 8 were all dealing with B100 “fast-track” passengers, but there were long queues at desks 9 and above. Soliciting was carried out up and down the queues by grey uniformed officials, with payment made out of sight, behind the glass screen at the left hand side of the immigration hall. Third time I’ve seen this in my last three visits to Phuket. Mantis

The government is planning a new system of land distribution that would help the poor and contain encroachment at the same time. Photo: Pongpat Wongyala

Land rights for poor to change T H E G OV ER N M EN T plans to stop giving individual land-use rights to the landless poor in order to curb endless encroachment on public land. Instead, authorities will study other ways of helping the poor to secure land to make a living. The idea was raised last week at the first meeting of the new National Land Policy Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. For decades, land-use rights have been granted to individual poor people but many recipients later sell the rights, often to businessmen

who end up building illegal structures including resorts on the land. After the land is sold, poor people are once more landless and look for new areas to settle, and the encroachment cycle begins again, said Dapong Ratanasuwan, the minister of natural resources and the environment. New approaches to giving land rights to poor people so they could make a living could involve a cooperative system or other methods that would suit land conditions in different areas, the minister said. Thailand 7th top expat destination A

ccording to the latest HSBC Expat Explorer survey, Thailand is the 7th top destination for expatriats, and was again rated the top rank in terms of affordable quality living. In last year’s survey, the kingdom was ranked 4th and 1st, respectively. For the top 10 destinations for expats in 2014, Switzerland topped the list for a second straight year, followed by Singapore, China, Germany, Bahrain, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, India and Hong Kong. For expats’ expenses, Thailand was rated the top destination for cost-effective quality living. It is followed by Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Bahrain, India, Turkey, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said, “This is great news, and it is very encouraging to see that expats have high regard for Thailand, especially in terms of cost-effective quality living.

Muay Thai training opportunities attract many foreigners to Thailand. A lot of them become expats. Photo: David Maiolo It is also very encouraging that Thailand receives a nod of approval from expats to be in the top 10 destinations, as the country has seen a number of positive changes over the last six months.” According to the HSBC Expat Explorer 2014, Thailand emerges as the best destination for expats looking for an improved lifestyle at an affordable cost. The report said, “This greater level of disposable income can be attributed to the high proportion of expats

who say they spend less on utilities (71 per cent compared to a global average of 26pc), on accommodation (70pc compared to a global average of 23pc), on public transport (69pc compared to a global average of 35pc) and on groceries (66pc compared to 22pc globally).” Thai cuisine, Thai culture and shopping experiences in Thailand were regarded highly by expats who participated in the survey. For travelling experiences, over two-thirds of expats said

they travelled more since moving to Thailand. “79 per cent (of expats) say it is simple to travel around locally, be it to historical sites and temples, the national parks in the mountains or the stunning beach resorts,” according to the survey. Blessed with the unique Thainess character, Thailand offers a wide variety of natural and historical attractions, distinctive culture and a range of fun-filled activities from spa and shopping experiences to Thai cooking and kickboxing lessons. Now in its seventh year, The Expat Explorer survey is one of the largest and longestrunning global expat surveys. This independent research study is commissioned by HSBC Expat and conducted by the third party research company YouGov, who surveyed 9,288 expats through an online questionnaire. The survey was conducted through April and May 2014, with expats from over 100 countries taking part.

Report to declare MH370 plane ‘lost’, infuriates families RELATIVES OF MH370 passengers have criticised beleaguered Malaysia Airlines after an official reportedly said authorities would set a date to announce the plane “lost”, with an industry source saying such a declaration would see the search called off. Both Malaysia Airlines and officials in Australia -which is leading the search for the missing jet far off its western coast -- have denied the reported comments by the carrier’s commercial director Hugh Dunleavy. But Voice370, an association of MH370 victims’ relatives, said in a statement late Monday that it was “bewil-

A New Zealand Herald article, citing Dunleavy, said authorities were working to set a date -- likely by the end of the year -- to formally announce the loss of the Boeing 777, which vanished off radars on March 8 with 239 people aboard. “We don’t have a final date but once we’ve had an official loss recorded we can work with the next of kin on the full compensation payments for those families,” he was quoted as saying. hina is to loan Thailand cash to construct three dual-track railways as part of a governmentto-government deal to boost regional transport links. The agreement was made at a full-delegation meeting led by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The meeting followed bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday. Gen Prayut said Tuesday at the Apec summit in Beijing that the project will cover three routes — Bangkok-Nong Khai, Bangkok-Map Ta Phut and Kaeng Khoi-Map Ta Phut. The new tracks will allow better transportation from the Northeast to industrial areas in Rayong and will be a good start in developing links between Thailand, Asean and China, he said. They will accommodate mid-speed trains at first but could eventually be used for high-speed services. The Chinese government will provide a loan to Thailand to allow the develop-

ment of the lines. Under the arrangement, Thailand will be able to repay the investment costs to China with rubber and rice. Exact details of the “soft loan” arrangement are yet to be worked out. “We have agreed to build the dual-track rail routes using 1.435-metre standard gauge to improve transport connectivity,” Gen Prayut said. “China expressed a readiness to support the construction.” “If we don’t start construction now, it will prove an obstacle to transport in the future. We have to make a decisive move, otherwise transport development will be delayed and the cost of the project will increase.” Gen Prayut said the government is holding negotiations on plans to develop several rail routes, but the agreement with China is being made under a “transparent” government-to-government deal, without the involvement of private companies. “A full delegation has discussed it and I can assure people the deal will not have any adverse affect on the country,” Gen Prayut said. “A number of countries are interested in developing railway projects in Thailand but not on these routes.” The premier added that the government will make sure there is no graft in the dual-track rail projects with China or any forthcoming transport development, arguing the country has already been damaged enough by corruption. “We cannot allow corruption to occur in these projects because we’ve been damaged by such activities for too long. In terms of the contract with China, the government will make everything transparent

The graphic shows government’s plans, inherited from the Yingluck Shinawatra administration, to upgrade key railway lines from single- to double-tracking. and follow all related laws,” Gen Prayut said. The majority of planned dual-track railway development in the country is set to involve one-metre wide tracks, to match existing train lines. But one-metre dual tracks can only accommodate trains at speeds of up to 160kph. The 1.435-metre standardgauge tracks that China will help develop could serve trains at speeds of up to 250 kph, although feasibility studies must be carried out to confirm this, Gen Prayut said. “We will proceed with dual-track railways and midspeed trains at first,” he said. “This will be a New Year’s

present for the Thai people in 2015.” In discussions at the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) gathering this week, Gen Prayut said Chinese leaders raised the issue of reviving the “Silk Road” trading routes. He said he agreed with the idea, claiming the policy would benefit Thailand economically. “They proposed that Thailand and China should join hands in reviving the Silk Road since it will help link our two countries. We will discuss the next steps for that later on, but the immediate plan is our agreement on dualtrack railways,” Gen Prayut told reporters. Bangkok Post

‘Legal weed’ gains momentum V

oters in Washington, DC, Oregon and Alaska last week joined Colorado and Washington states to formally legalize marijuana for recreational use, as across the United States referendums were held on issues ranging from gay marriage to abortion, on the sidelines of midterm elections. Alaska, Oregon and the US capital provided a new high for the marijuana lobby, two years after two other western US states, Colorado and Washington, led the way in approving cannabis for recreational use. In other referendum results, voters approved increases in the minimum wage in states including Arkansas, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota, according to partial results posted online. On marijuana, Washington, D.C. approved the measure by 65 per cent in favor and 28pc against, while Oregon passed by 54pc to 46pc, and Alaska 52pc to 48pc. “More and more people are realizing that it makes sense to choose licensed, regulated, and taxed marijuana businesses over the drug cartels,” said Mike Elliott,

On the streets of the US capital, pro-marijuana campaigners were in jubilant form. “This is a great day for ending the war on drugs in the District of Columbia,” said Malik Burnett, a leading campaigner. “The District of Columbia was the birth place of the war on drugs, and marijuana prohibition was the engine of the war on drugs. Today we are putting the engine out of

commission,” he added. Alaskans also don’t think marijuana should remain criminalized: with 44 percent of precincts counted, the Yes vote had 52.6pc compared to 47.4pc opposed to legalizing pot. Florida meanwhile appeared to have failed to approve a measure allowing marijuana for medical purposes. Some 57pc voted in favor, less than the 60pc required for the proposal to pass, partial results showed.

Sweden seeks ban on synthetic marijuana after two overdoses SW EDEN H AS ASK ED the European Union for the right to speed up a ban on substances contained in a synthetic marijuana sold as “Spice” after two apparent fatal overdoses, its health ministry said Monday. Thailand has been grey since 1931. Image: Lokal_Profil Marijuana was just one subject being voted on, along with everything from abortion to gay marriage and GMOs to bear-baiting, in state and local referendums held in the sidelines of the US midterm elections. Same-sex marriage, which is also in the process of being legalized by many US states, was put to a referendum in Arizona, which amended its constitution to outlaw it five years ago. Another hot but-

ton issue, abortion, was on the ballot in Colorado, North Dakota and Tennessee. In Colorado a proposal to define a fetus as a person was rejected by 64pc to 36pc of voters. In North Dakota proabortion voters also won by 64pc to 36pc. Firearms measures were voted on in Alabama, Missouri and Washington state, where there were two opposing ballots: one making it tougher to buy a gun by imposing back-

ground checks, and the other seeking to ban exactly that measure. Eight towns and cities voted on antifracking proposals. The extraction of oil and gas from shale via hydraulic fracturing has boosted US oil production, but critics fear its impact on the environment. Several towns and cities voted on measures against genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Referendums in Oregon and Colorado sought to make it mandatory to label food containing GMOs. On a lighter note, in California a measure proposed in San Francisco and Berkeley would impose a tax of one cent per centiliter on sugary beverages, in a bid to combat obesity and other health problems. Voters in Alaska were consulted on a proposal to ban mining activity if it endangers wild salmon. Also aiming to protect animals, the East Coast state of Maine was asked to ban the use of food to bait bears, in particular using cold pizza and donuts as lures. AFP

Bill for new inheritance tax of 10pc presented to Cabinet THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE was due on Wednesday (November 12) to present its inheritance tax bill to the Cabinet. The bill seeks to levy a 10pc tax on inherited assets worth more than B50 million. It will also propose measures to prevent attempts to avoid or evade the tax. Finance Minister Sommai Phasee said that the 10pc rate was lower than such taxes in many other countries and his ministry would propose many exemptions. He said the tax would be imposed only on bequests of more than B50 million, and on registered assets such as real estate, land, stocks and bonds. Heirs would be able to pay in installments. Those with large inheritances should not rush to transfer their assets immediately to family members, he said; the Revenue Code will also be amended to charge a 5-per-cent gift tax to prevent attempts to dodge the inheritance tax by transferring assets worth less than B50 million at one time. Recipients of such gifts will have to declare them when calculating their personal income tax at year-end. Mr Sommai said that after Cabinet approval, he expected the National Legislative Assembly to pass the inheritance tax bill because it would create taxation fairness. The bill is the first attempt to tax the rich – a no-go area under Thai democratic governments. If the Cabinet approves the bill without requiring amendments it will be sent for discussion by the National Legislative Assembly. All being well, it can be expected to come into force in six months or so. MCOT Online

Uber ‘will change face of transport’ on Phuket Alasdair Forbes execeditor@classactmedia.co.th

U

ber, the smartphone app for calling a cab, was officially launched in Phuket on Wednesday (November 12) after a month of ‘secret’ trials. Uber already operates in more than 220 cities across six continents, explained Warren Tseng, Uber’s International Launcher. “Here in Phuket, we are working with licensed limousine drivers. “Our mobile app allows riders (in the case of Phuket, largely tourists) to get a safe, reliable, convenient and affordable limousine ride in minutes at the click of a button.” After downloading the app, a user orders a cab by tapping on the screen. The app sends the phone’s location to Uber. The user puts in the address of his destination or marks it on the map. He can also get a price estimate for the trip. A driver is contacted and his name and car details – make, colour, license plate – appear in the app. His location is tracked on a map. When he arrives an SMS is sent to the user. On the way to the destination the user can follow the route on the map in his phone.

Screen shots from the Uber smartphone app. At left, positions of nearby cabs are shown. Centre, account user’s details, right billing details. Users of the Uber system pay no cash; the fare is charged to their credit card when they reach their destination. There is also a feedback form to rate the driver and the car. “Feedback is extremely important to us and helps us ensure a consistently high quality for every ride on the Uber platform is maintained,” says Mr Tseng. Uber “driver partners” are, he says, professionally licensed and insured. “When you use the Uber mobile app, you can be certain that you’re working with one of Phuket’s licensed and insured professional drivers.” For Phuket Uber has chosen

only “immaculate” Toyota, Mitsubishi, or Honda sedan or SUVs. “The vehicle and the driver’s credentials have been inspected and approved by Uber and meet all regulatory requirements for a Phuket commercial transport operator.” Asked why Uber chose to introduce its service in Phuket, Mr Tseng said the company had noticed existing Uber users trying to use the app when they arrived in Phuket. “Phuket is a place where reliable transportation options are few and far between and public transport is virtually non-existent. “People want safety, they want incredible reliability and

they want accountability. Uber is the only technology which provides all three of these important qualities in Phuket.” Phuket has therefore become the first #UberDESTINATION, “a series of exotic destination resort towns where travellers from around the world can turn to the service they love and trust to ride in style in popular holiday cities”. Uber gives some samples of fares on the island. From the airport to anywhere in Phuket, it charges a flat rate of B950. For other routes the fare will vary depending on traffic, but expect to pay B614-772 for Patong to Nikki Beach (Layan Beach), B385-467 for Patong to Central Festival, B412-502

for Patong to the Boathouse on Kata Beach, Patong to Phuket Fantasea B327-390, and B254293 for Patong to Le Meridien Phuket, Karon. The prices are generally higher than for meter taxis. But many people will probably rate the convenience of being able to order a cab, not having to haggle over price, and not having to worry about communication difficulties as being adequate compensation for any difference. For more detailed fare information, see www.uber.com/ cities/phuket Drivers in Phuket have been welcoming of Uber and very interested in using the application, said Mr Tseng. “Drivers who use Uber still go about their normal business – getting bookings through hotels, tour operators or travel agencies – but can now boost their income by using Uber to fill down time between those bookings. “We have seen Uber become a unifying force among the driver community around the island, which has historically been very segregated. “Uber driver partners have been sharing their experience with other drivers from different parts of the island and encouraging them to partner with Uber.

Direct sales firms face tighter scrutiny A TIGHTENING OF RULES ON ISSUING licenses for direct sales or relationship sales companies is likely after the the arrest of Chinese “Future Richest Man in the World” Chong Mi Chiew for having a fake Thai ID card Chong is wanted in China and Malaysia on charges that he was operating a massive Ponzi scheme that allegedly cheated tens of thousands of people in those two countries of an estimated total of B9 billion baht. He was in the process of registering his “company”, Yun Shu Mao – also known as

YSLM – in Thailand when he, his girlfriend and a close associate were arrested. As a result, said Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn this week, the Business Development Department (BDD) has been told to “be more careful” before issuing business licences to operators of direct sales businesses. Admitting that get-rich-quick scams are a national problem and could damage Thailand’s image and economy, Ms Apiradi said her ministry would take stern action against illegal business owners. THE BIG LIST Animalistic spying If it flies, swims, runs, climbs or hangs, it can most likely be used to spy in the name of the “motherland”. Meet James Bond’s pets.

Napoleon’s monkey during the Napoleonic Wars, Britain was gripped by fears of an invasion by the French, and much was made of the dangers of French spies and infiltrators. So when a French ship was wrecked in a storm near Hartlepool, on the Channel Coast, locals kept a close watch on the survivors who made it to shore – among them a bedraggled monkey, the ship’s mascot, dressed in a mock uniform. Local bigwigs put the unfortunate animal on trial for spying, and it was executed by hanging from the mast of a fishing boat. War pigeons Homing pigeons were a key method of communication in the trenches during World War I, before battlefield radios were invented and when telephone cables were often cut by shellfire: during the Battle of the Marne in 1914, 72 pigeon lofts advanced alongside the French troops. A French pigeon named Cher Ami was awarded the Croix de Guerre for carrying essential messages during the Battle of Verdun – and on his last mission in 1918, despite being shot through the wing, delivered a final dispatch that was credited with saving the lives of 200 soldiers. Spy dolphins If dolphins always look like they’re smiling, it may be because they know something you don’t. Dolphins have been recruited by the world’s navies and spy masters for all sorts of sub-sea tasks, including patrolling the waters around US navy ships to watch out for mines or saboteurs. Reports say an elite group of 36 US Navy dolphins has been equipped with toxic dart guns – and that some of the smartest toxic attack dolphins went AWOL with their weapons during Hurricane Katrina. Anti-bomb bees The antennae of honey bees can sense pollen in the wind from hundreds of metres away – at concentrations as low as a few parts per trillion, far better than any man-made sensor. As a result, selected bugs are now being trained to recognise the smell of bomb ingredients. The bees would be deployed at an airport or train station inside a shoe-box sized scanner, which contains a digital camera to detect when the bees become excited after recognising the smell of plastic explosive, for example. Secret squirrels Iran’s police a few years back took 14 squirrels into custody – they were allegedly equipped with eavesdropping devices and were suspected of spying on behalf of foreign intelligence services. The news reports don’t say if the suspects cracked under questioning – but the idea isn’t as nutty as it sounds. British spy chiefs have confirmed that they recruited a squad of gerbils in the 1970s to sniff out suspected terrorists at airports.

Snake ‘eats’ man on TV, sets off internet tizzy A you ng A me r ica n naturalist, filmmaker and adventurer in the Amazon set off an internet stir Thursday (November 6) after he claimed he offered himself for dinner to a giant snake for a TV show. “I’m Paul Rosolie and I’m about to be the first person to be eaten alive by an anaconda,” he said in a 30-second video on Twitter promoting a new show, Eaten Alive, to be telecast on the Discovery Channel on December 7. A longer teaser posted by the network on YouTube

shows Rosolie donning “a custom-built snake-proof suit” to enter the belly of the fearsome reptilian beast head-first. On his Twitter feed, Ro-

solie told his followers: “If u know me - I would never hurt a living thing. But you’ll have to watch #EatenAlive to find out how it goes down!”

Social media and tabloid websites jumped on the story, but animal rights group PETA, fearing for the welfare of the snake, demanded that Discovery pull the show. “Whatever the filmmaker has planned, the snake will likely pay the ultimate price, as animals usually do when they’re used for entertainment,” it said. Green anacondas, native to tropical South America, are among the biggest snakes in the world. The one seen in the Eaten Alive teaser required at least seven men to hold it. AFP

Man eats woman’s face, tased to death WHEN POLICE ENTERED into a hotel room in south Wales last Thursday (November 6), they didn’t expect to see murder suspect Mathew Williams to be chewing on a woman’s face. Williams, who was released from prison in the last week of October after a five yeart stint, was found eating his 22-year-old victim’s eyeball and half her face. Police were called in after hotel security staff burst into the room because Williams refused to let them in. One security guard subdued Williams with a high

voltage taser, which knocked the 34-year-old onto the floor. Though he was formally arrested by police, Williams becase unresponsive and died shortly after. “While under arrest, the man became unresponsive. Officers and paramedics ad-

ministered first aid but he has since been pronounced deceased,” said a Gwent police spokesperson. According to an investigation, the pair had met just hours earlier and headed back to the hotel – which operated as a bail hostel – for a drink.

Japan’s ‘Butter refugees’ want milk JAPANESE SHOPPERS ARE up in arms over a serious butter shortage that has forced Tokyo to resort to emergency imports, as some grocers limit sales to one block per customer. Some shop shelves are bare and stores are trumpeting the arrival of new supplies with posters in the windows announcing “We have butter!” With Christmas cakebaking season fast approaching, social media has been abuzz over the shortage, with Twitter user @justastarter1 claiming to be a “butter refu-

gee” after trailing between shops without success. The agriculture ministry said the problem is linked to a broiling summer that left the nation’s cows exhausted and unable – or unwilling – to generate their usual milk supply. The bovine strike has sapped supply just as dairy farmers trim their herds to cope with Japan’s dwindling population. And with farmers prioritising supply for liquid milk to keep the supermarket shelves stocked, Japan now faces a

shortage in the raw material used to produce butter. In a bid to try and keep the nation’s kitchens operating, the government in May imported 7,000 tons of butter, and a further 3,000 tons in September, the first time in years Tokyo has raided foreign dairy markets. A sharply weaker yen has sent the price of imported feed grain skyward. Japan’s raw milk production was 7.45 million tons in the year ended in March, down 14 per cent from the peak year 19 years ago. The 100-year-old grandmother from Howes Cave, New York made the big leap just after she kissed her 7-month-old great-great-granddaughter at Saratoga Skydiving. This was Cunningham’s third jump. She first took on the the sport at the age of 90.

Car set on fire, online cash raised for new one

ONLINE CROWDFUNDing raised enough money last Friday (November 7) for a Belgian electrician to be able to replace his car that was destroyed in a mass antiausterity protest in Brussels. Bruno Dillen launched the fundraising campaign after Belgian news organisations published photos showing an orange Peugot 106 turned upside down and set on fire. Abdeslam “Gharrafi is an electrician who needs his car to work. Let’s raise enough money so that Abdeslam and his family can continue to contribute to society,” Dillen said on crowdfunding site gofundme.com. “We cannot allow a minority to destroy lives,” he added in his appeal for US$2,500. More than US$18,500 had already been raised in eight hours from 1,000 contributors. The most surprised was Abdeslam himself. “Frankly I still don’t believe it,” he told reporters. The mayor of Brussels blamed hooligans for violent clashes with police during mass protests against the austerity policies of Belgium’s new government. The troublemakers set fire to 11 vehicles and damaged 60 others with about 100 policemen and 43 people injured. AFP thephuketnews

e recently explained to you how to apply for your Thai driver’s licence, but if you already have an international one then it might only take you a couple hours, rather than a whole day, to get legal on the roads. People who have a license from their home country can come into the Transportation Department to check if their license can be converted into a Thai one. Officials will look into the type of vehicles that the driver is allowed to operate and what kind of restrictions apply according to the license. Some countries in Europe can easily convert their license if their road regulations are similar to those in Thailand. For instance, driving on the same side of the road and following the same basic road rules. People from countries such as Germany and the US (who drive on the other side) may not convert their licenses into a Thai license; they have to carry out both the theory and practical test in order to drive in Thailand. There are many different kinds of licenses throughout the world – too many to detail here – so the best thing to do is to head to the transport office with your valid license and passport and show it to someone at the information desk. They will determine whether or not you can convert your license to a Thai one. Q: Will I be able to use my valid UK drivers license in Thailand? A: You must convert this into a Thai license first. You will need to bring your passport, work permit (or a notification of address from Immigration) a medical certificate, as well as copies of all of these, to the Land Transport Office in Phuket Town. Head there for 8.30am sharp, just as you would if you were doing a test, but show them your valid license. You will have to do a short brake test, which requires you to put your foot onto the brake whenever you see the red light, as well as a simple eye test. Then you’ll have to watch a video. That’s it though, you’ll then pay around B200, get your photo taken and you’ll be handed your new Thai license! thephuketnews

Street art goes tropical Graffiti artists Victoriano and Szabotage tag Phuket JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

A

set of fresh eyes span the outer wall of Anthem Wakepark in Kathu with colours that scream out to motorists: “Get in the water!” That’s the work of Spanish graffiti artist Victoriano and his English counterpart Gus “Szabotage “ Szabo. Both artists dropped by Phuket for a week of tagging public areas around the island, complete with their own unique signatures. “This is normal for me, it’s what we do. I travel the world and paint. It’s what we do,” Victoriano said. The artist has done installations around the world, including Las Vegas, Boston, Dubai, Helsinki, Paris, Barcelona, and his beloved second home, London. He first picked up a spray paint can at 17 years old and now, at 33, he is one of the top Spanish graffiti artists and one of the most renowned muralists in the western hemisphere. British-born Szabotage, meanwhile, has become one of the top graffiti artists based in Asia (he lives in Hong Kong) in just the five years he has taken up the skill. An architect and interior designer by trade, Szabotage’s skills with the spray paint cans have been sharpened

Szabotage, left, and Victoriano. Photo: Matthew Semper with an obsessive drive to perfect his artistry with intense daily 12-hour sessions. The mural that sits outside of Anthem Wakepark is a product of an intimate love affair with colours, street art and a desire to enhance the space around them. Just in time too, since this mural will have several thousands of eyes upon then as the Anthem Wakepark hosts the cable ski event in the 4th Asian Beach Games, which will take place between November 14 and 23. (The cable ski event takes place November 16 –18). “The eyes are very symbolic. They are a huge statement. When you drive past, those eyes hook on you and crave your attention,” Szabotage explained. It took the two artists half a day to

finish the mural, which was one of many that will sit outside for public consumption. In addition to the eyes, the duo also painted a large mural inside the wake park and two other public displays on the outside of Brian Woulfe’s interior design business, Designs by Woulfe, in Kathu, including one of Kate Moss. “I love all colours to be honest. I just love throwing it together, most of my work uses the whole spectrum. Colours can teach you a lot of things, they work so well together, I love finding the right combos to pronounce the things you want. It’s an internal game really.” Both artists said this will not be their last time in Phuket so islanders can expect more from these two in the years to come. “I will definitely come back, it’s gorgeous here and there are so many beautiful surroundings. There’s much to inspire you here,” Victoriano said.

Young talent at The Boathouse

he Boathouse in Kata hosted an elegant exhibition on November 8, showcasing the work of 24 talented Thai and foreign artists. Contenders included Juffy Joob, Kannikar Keawdam, Aree Kongpon and Kanchana Sutthikanchanakul. There was a total of 48 pictures on show in the exhibition which runs for 30 days. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise money to buy art materials for Baan Bangthong School. The pupils there are no longer able to use the art equipment and materials due to wear and tear, so they hope to raise enough money to resolve this problem.

TCT letter stirs up teachers ASK THE AJARN

Eric Haeg info@teflcampus.com

One comment on the Thailand Teaching forum read, ‘Yet another policy that is not officially published...we are left to discover it by accidental misfortune’.

A teacher trainer at TEFL Campus and Phuket resident since 2004, Eric welcomes all questions regarding teaching English in Phuket at: info@ teflcampus.com

A

letter from the Teachers Council of Thailand (TCT) recently circulated social media, causing quite a stir among Thailand’s foreign teacher community. In basic terms, it states that foreigners applying for their teaching permit, must ask their university to send a degree verification letter on official paper, with an official seal enclosed in an official envelope direct to the TCT’s office. The letter must clearly confirm that applicants have successfully completed their degree. Sounds like a standard transcript, right? Whether it is or not, the letter is indicative of the TCT’s capricious nature. One comment on the Thailand Teaching forum read, “Yet another policy that is not officially published on the website or communicated to teachers in any way; we are left to discover it by accidental misfortune.” That’s one of the more level-headed comments we read and before anyone could suggest we all keep calm and pass the somtam, foreign teachers all over the internet were doing their best Chicken Little impersonations. “If they want to lose all the legit teachers, that’s the way to do it.” posted one member of Facebook’s ESL Teachers in Thailand group. Another replied soon after, “Good luck to Thailand because there won’t be any teachers left in the country within a couple of months.” Perhaps most reactionary comments is

Will the new requirement scare off many teachers? typified here, “I can’t help but get the impression that the [TCT] isn’t particularly happy with the idea of foreign teachers in Thailand.” Back to the land of reason and rationale, many comments mentioned legitimate pitfalls, “Sending directly to the (TCT) seems like a recipe for lost mail and no one being held accountable when the paperwork fails, causing chaos for teachers and schools.” Another good point relates to documents not written in English, “A verification letter from a German, French or Italian uni would need to be translated, which is diffi-

cult to do through a sealed envelope!” Still another good point relates to schools’ name changes, ““My university has a different name so I don’t know how this would work. The headed paper and seal would be of a different name to that on my certificate!” While some claim the sky is falling, others (including the author of this article) fully expect this regulation to disappear as quietly and quickly as it started. Any foreigner teacher who’s worked in Thailand for a few years knows how routinely regulations come and go. How do we know? First, since 2006 the TCT’s Thai Culture, Ethics and Language Course (a requirement for all foreigners) has started and stopped more times than we can remember. The TCT’s Professional Knowledge Tests are currently in limbo, despite hundreds of teachers spending tens of thousands of baht to pass them. And as recently as last August, the head of immigration was sidelined just after he announced that his department would adhere to its own directives and stop allowing back-to-back entries on tourist visas. If past behaviour is an indicator of future behaviour, it seems reasonable to expect that the TCT will see the error of its ways, or at least be forced to do so and accept transcripts in place of these verification letters. Let’s just hope that happens before the pot stirrers gain any more unfounded momentum.

Mövenpick’s water model Phuket resort engineer chief on sustainable water conservation initiatives HAPPY HABITAT Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th

We find that the water has high chlorine and pH levels – it’s hard. We know this because our water is tested monthly. This water ultimately comes from reservoirs, wells and desalination plants.

T

he Phuket News’ Environment Desk recently had the pleasure and honour to have lunch with Treepop Paojeen, the esteemed Director of Engineering at the Mövenpick Resort & Spa, Karon Beach Phuket. An interview that was initially scheduled for an hour quickly spanned the better part of four hours as Treepop shared his insight and plans for his hotel to continue to set the bar high for environmental sustainability, through its various responsible resource management initiatives. In charge of maintenance, landscaping and waste management, Treepop commands some 41 engineering staff in addition to 27 gardening and landscaping staff, A respected engineer, the Bangkok native oversees all building renovation and upgrade projects at the Karon property, and is regularly consulted for major building and engineering training projects at other Mövenpick properties throughout Thailand and the Asia region. The focus of the interview was on water, wastewater and energy management. This week, we’ll cover the discussion on the first two, and in a follow-up article, we’ll address the latter.

An earthly element

Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket sets a good example with its responsible water and wastewater management initiatives and policies. @thephuketnews

Currently, the property consumes some 500 cubic metres (m3) of water daily, which comes from three main sources. The main source is six deep wells on site, each about 80 metres deep, and which supply about 60 per cent of the property’s needs. “The deeper the well, the better the quality,” notes Treepop. “Anything less than 15m is not reliable, and has a higher chance for contamination, of ground metals or human polution.” City utility water supplies about 30pc of the hotel’s water needs through ground pipes, while private water that is trucked in supplies about 10pc. However, there are various drawbacks of Phuket’s outsourced water supply. “We find that the [city] water often has high chlorine and pH levels – it’s hard. We know this because our water is tested monthly. This water ultimately comes from reservoirs, wells and desalination plants; it has a higher base cost, and more factors that might affect the quality.” The cost of outsourced water by itself is enough for anyone to consider looking inward and upward: B95 per m3 for trucked

water, and B34 per m3 for city water. This is compared to only B3 per m3 for deep well water, paid as a tax to the local government, a requirement that many other properties on the island bypass altogether. In line with the hotel’s policy to be more self-sustainable, Treepop is adamant on reducing dependency on private and city water. He will do so by increasing its storage capacity and taking advantage of a fourth, ever-abundant water source – the rain. “Currently, we can store about 200m3 of water on site, but since we use more than twice that daily, it’s clear we need to increase storage capacity. We should have at least two days reserve supplies for crisis situations.” So, this year he plans to add additional storage capacity of 600 m3, bringing the total capacity to 800m3. With increased storage capacity, the hotel can start to collect and store rain water, utilizing some of the 3,000m2 plus surface area of its main lobby building to supplement water needs during the rainy season, by as much as 30pc Treepop reckons.

Green screen

As for filtration of raw water for domestic use, the hotel currently utilizes a two stage system – sand and carbon – but will soon implement a three-stage system, including multimedia, activated carbon and metal removal filter tanks to ensure optimal screening.

Beyond domestic water needs, the hotel doesn’t let its black and grey water go to waste (pun intended). On site, it treats some 500-600m3 of wastewater per day. None of it is released back into the environment, but treated and recycled, ultimately for domestic and landscaping needs. Treepop walks us through the stages. First, the ‘black water’ is screened to separate out large sediments, before being run through an aeration stage, to add essential oxygen to the mix. This ‘grey water’ is then filtered through sand and carbon tanks so it can be recycled and utilized by the nursery for all of the hotel’s propagation needs. It should be noted that the grey water is isolated from domestic-use raw water. Next, we head to the nursery, where there are rich compost piles, and lush, ornamental plants, flowers and trees, as well as seasonal gardens that can even supplement the staff canteen. All of the nursery’s water needs are supplied by the hotel’s recycled water, which is enough to supply about 30pc of all the property’s landscaping needs, a number that will certainly increase with time. In a follow-up article, we’ll explore the hotel’s model energy saving initiatives, and examine how the hotel is already saving millions in overheads, and plans to save even more. Watch this space.

Rhodes to Fit

Andy Joyce and RPM’s Hayden Rhodes shake things up, literally.

JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

As Rhodes explains, many people are out of shape because of high stress levels which is often a chemical inbalance and internal (the person rarely understands what is making them stressed)

A

s the waistline of Andrew “Andy” Joyce begins to decrease in size, RPM Health Club Manager Hayden Rhodes decided to add some new twists into the routines. This is the seventh week in Andy’s journey to reclaim his waist and with about one and a half months left in the salesman’s training regiment, a challenge has been thrown down – though we’ve been here before. “Next Sunday (November 23) I’ll be doing the 6km fun run at the Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest. Should be good since I did the 10.5km fun run (at Bang Whad Dam in Kathu) a few weeks ago and I felt great after that,” Andy told The Phuket News. Though Andy has become noticeably fitter, Rhodes has upped the anty’ and decreased the rest time between his exercise sets – from 70 seconds down to 45 seconds. At the same time, Rhodes has incorporated “super sets” into the training regiment. After every exercise set, Andy has to do eight chin-ups and eight squats-to-press. The “super sets” switch between burpees and TRX routines to give a bit of variety and add strength to different areas of Andy’s body. The change has helped the salesman not only gain valuable insight into his own endurance and fitness, but has also shortened his workouts from one hour to 30-45 minutes. As Rhodes explains, many people are out of shape because of high stress levels which is often a chemical inbalance and internal (the person rarely understands what is making them stressed). “The stress response comes from the adrenal gland and a lot of it is hormonal so the reason we keep the workouts – which I really would rather call ‘movement’ – is because if someone who is out of shape goes for more than 40 to 45 minutes of intense exercise the

TRX workout system. Photo: A&A Photography. body goes to stress response mode. “If you’re fit that’s alright, but if you’re not then you need to keep the workouts, or movements, shorter and sharper for hormonal reasons ,” Rhodes said, “the mental fatigue of longer workouts is also detrimental.” On the nutritional side, Andy is back to drinking green juices. But instead of a complete overhaul of his dietary intake, the juices serve to make sure he keeps replenishing nutrients and vitamins. This is done with juices made mostly from vegetables, especially “super foods” like kale and spinach. “Green juicing is high in nutrients and keeps the Ph level of the blood more alkaline,” Rhodes said. “Fructose is converted into sugar in the body which very easily can be stored as body fat, so keeping some fruits for taste is OK, but it’s better to keep it at a minimum,” Rhodes said.

Green Juicing

The liquid stuff is back in Andy’s diet as he gulps down glasses of juices made from mostly fresh vegetables. While “super foods” like kale and spinach are the star of the show, Rhodes recommends adding green apples, mangosteens or berries, all of which are high in anti-oxidants, to help keep stress levels low and add a bit of flavour to the green stuff. It’s important to note that none of the juices are meal replacements but should be treated like supplements, similar to vitamins and minerals. This particular shake has kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, apple, ginger and lemon.

Yogi flower power: November’s blossoming lotus pose

H

2 @thephuketnews

i and welcome to November! I thought that we would have a bit of fun this month, in the spirit of the Loy Krathong festival and my birthday month. So the asana we will be practising this month was inspired by Loy Krathong and is also a big favourite in my kids yoga classes – it always gets a few smiles and giggles. I don’t know about you but I always jump at any chance to feel like a big kid again and I have to admit that this posture is definitely part of the big kid ingredients. The asana is called Vikasitakamalasana or blossoming lotus pose. The words Loy Krathong can be translated as “to float a basket”. This month’s yoga pose also requires you to feel like your chest and head are floating as your hips and seating bones are sinking. The flowered krathong decorations floating in the water symbolise the release of anger and hate. This idea of letting go is a great inspiration for our asana this month. As we

settle into this month’s asana, we will feel the mind release fear and uncertainty of failure. The mind will begin to feel focused and strong, with a sense of achievement. The fun part of this asana is the giggles you have trying to hold the balance on the first few attempts. The blossoming lotus is also a great way to: work your back, spine, waist, core and glutes, forcing you to make micro adjustments in your core to help you balance. An awesome way to build a six pack! Follow the steps below, to be on your way to becoming your own blossoming lotus. Sit upright on your mat with the soles of your feet together in butterfly pose. Relax your knees and let them stretch gently toward the ground. Put your hands underneath your calves so your calves rest on your wrists and your hands are resting on the floor, if you are a beginner to this

pose, keep you hands on the floor and rest your back against a wall to help with the balance (see photo one). Rock backward onto your tail bone as you pull your legs into the air, palms are facing upwards. The head and chest float as the hips and bottom sink. Keep the core active. Keep the soles of your feet touching one another as you balance for five breaths. (see photo two) Lower to butterfly and repeat. There is a lot of fun to be had with this asana and laughter is sometimes the best medicine. Happy stretching Metta Kim oxo Kim White is the owner of Sala Samadhi. Satiated up in the Sky

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014

GASTRONAUT

Graeme Shalam editor@classactmedia.co.th

K

ee Sky Lounge is set atop a boutique resort, in a hidden oasis within the heart of Patong. It is complete with free underground parking for all guests and only 50 yards from some of the area’s most iconic bars. As you ascend in the all- glass lift, the Andaman Sea and Patong Bay open up before your eyes. It is definitely worth getting here before sunset to truly appreciate these views. The dining area is spaciously arranged over two floors. Both have a bar and are lit with a funky array of LED lights; think of your favourite restaurant meets Saturday Night Fever! There is a happy hour from 5.30pm and they have a resident mixologist who thrills guests with his extraordinary juggling skills and delicious drink preparations. As soon as we were seated at our ocean view table, a complimentary bread basket was delivered along with a tray of delightfully woody olive oil, cream cheese and balsamic vinegar. Whilst I would have loved more of the dips, I had Marge Simpson’s voice ringing in my ears “Don’t fill up on the bread Homer!” So I saved myself for Celebrity Chef Yha’s delicious Asian fusion dishes.

Our first entrée was a lobster medallion with mango salsa and a lime and coconut sauce. The delightful lobster meat was sweet and juicy and well complemented by the refreshing mango which had a hint of chilli and shallots, leaving a tingling herb taste on the tongue. The next dish was a Peking duck salad with herb lentils, baked tomatoes and rocket with a hoisin sauce. The moist duck meat was delicious and really shone when combined with the hoisin sauce and the crisp texture of the lentils. The sweetness of the sauce balanced well with the sharp taste of the rocket. A light and healthy choice! The main dish was a succulent rack of New Zealand lamb served with a Sichuan pepper and warm balsamic sauce on a bed of mashed potato with roasted garlic and grilled asparagus. The classic flavours of lamb with rosemary and garlic were there working their wonders and delightfully enhanced by Sichuan and balsamic sauce. It was a generous serv-

ing of lamb that was cooked to perfection and had me gnawing at the bones to get to the last remnants of meat. At this point the slightly too loud Thai cover music was turned off and the resident band started; delivering soothing, strumming sounds as they do six nights a week on the lower deck area. Moving to the star of the meal – our deserts arrived! First, a strawberry mille feuille, incredibly light, crisp and very tasty, loaded with cream and strawberries. The cream was beautifully whisked giving the dish an airy feel that just melted in my mouth. The final dish of the night was the chocolate volcano cake with chocolate sauce. The white chocolate decorations could have sufficed as a dessert. The beautifully presented chocolate button adorned with the Kee logo and the concertina white chocolate flower was as beautiful on the plate as on the palate. The impossibly moist, soft cake was divine and once broken into, it just oozed

dark chocolate sauce which matched perfectly with the homemade ice cream. If this is death by chocolate – what a way to go! If I had dinner elsewhere in Patong I would still go to Kee for the chocolate dessert. Thankfully we could rest and watch the show at the bar before waddling out the door, two very happy and well-fed customers! The esteemed Celebrity Chef who delighted our taste buds with this lovely meal is a Phuketian named Sonthaya “Yha” Kaewpradit. He possesses a flare for culinary creations that earned him a top place in a prestigious food festival in the US. Chef Yha joined Kee Resort after more than a decade creating daringly diverse menus for luxury resorts around Thailand, including eight years as Head Chef at The Chedi, Phuket. Chef Yha’s alchemy of local flavours and international dishes creates a fusion of fantastic flavours. His dishes have a flair and finesse that are hard to beat.

French bakery for Asian tastes Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

The chefs have perfected the dessert menu, offering customers a selection of enticing treats such as chouxs and eclairs.

Pistachio Choux: pistachio sauce pourded over the top of a light pastry with a creamy filling inside.

T

he brand new bakery Chouchou Deli Shop is located in the heart of Patong Beach, blending authentic recipes with modern tastes and colours. Located at the Grand Mercure, the deli represents the same quality of service as the rest of the fine hotel. The welcoming and friendly staff alongside the homely décor make it a relaxing and intimate place to sit down and relax. The manager has solid experience in the bakery industry including many years working in France. He spent two months researching and developing the menu in order to fit it in with the Asian culture. The chefs have perfected the dessert menu, offering customers a selection of enticing treats such as chouxs and eclairs. “A choux is a light pastry originally from France, and it has a very sweet taste which contrasts to the typical local Thai flavours you find here, so it was important to develop the recipe for the local clientèle. “However, we have also tried to maintain the original recipe as much as possible,” said Ms Nawarat Sophonwungsirikul, food and beverage manager. “We have not only developed the flavours and the taste, but we created the flavours that are inspired by local fruits and flowers,” she added. The pastry chefs had to learn about original Thai fruits in order to combine it with the cream inside the chouxs, and then create ten unique flavours: butterfly pea, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, mango, pineapple, salted

caramel, strawberry, pistachio and ParisBrest, which are all served daily. I began by tasting the Paris-Brest pastry and my first mouthful was just heavenly. It was a mix of almond praline with a creamy texture that just melted in my mouth. Another delicious option is the pistachio choux. The pistachio sauce poured on top of the light pastry, combined with the scrumptious filling inside was divine. “We make our desserts fresh daily and do not stock anything overnight as we believe it is important that our food is of high quality and at its freshest. Phuket GM gets down, dirty in downtown Delhi

I

recently had the good fortune of having to take a trip to India to accept a World Travel Award in Delhi. It was a proud moment for the resort and we are so happy to be among the best players in the Hospitality Industry. While I was there I had the chance to explore the city centre and the outskirts of Delhi. With a population of 30 million, Delhi is the world’s second most populous city. It is the largest city in India and one of the biggest in the world in terms of area. After Mumbai, Delhi is also the wealthiest city in India. I have a rough and ready way of getting an idea of the overall state of development of a country. There are three elements that are easy to observe: how healthy and happy the children look; how the woman are treated (this I have been following in the news for the past two years); and of course, the cleanliness of the country. All these elements are closely connected. The newly-appointed Prime

Minister, Narendra Modi, has personally shown the initiative to clean up the streets. I saw many billboards reminding people to keep the city clean – and the country does need a clean up. When on the roads, you do not park or drop off passengers at the road side. At roundabouts, the fastest driver is the winner, creating a concert of horns, which gave me cold hands and made my jaw drop. Immediately noticeable is the the lack of sanitary facilities, diseases, malnutrition and impaired development. The water and sanitation must be addressed otherwise it will get out of hand. Children are still begging along the roadsides and walkways the behaviour of the inhabitants is uncontrolled – a big challenge to solve. The heart of Delhi is very clean, because all the embassies are located there, but once you get to the outskirts it becomes a different world. My driver told me about the poor education and cramped classrooms. The number of poor people is starting

Infograph engine makes travel easy

W

hen it comes to travel, sometimes it’s good to know what other people are seeing and experiencing on their adventures. Flight search engine JetRadar has put together infographics for the most searched for sights and cities across Thailand. Collecting 3,000,000 unique searches from both foreigners and Thai people, the infographics show what the locals and travellers are getting up to in this beautiful country. As you will see from the pictures, there are a number of similarities and differences between the things JetRadar have discovered. Both travellers and Thais generally agree on the popular cities, like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. It’s interesting to see that while foreigners search for Bangkok the most - which isn’t surprising considering it’s the capital and one of the liveliest cities in the country - Thai users are searching for Chiang Mai more often. We can see that Phuket ranks higher for foreigners than it does for Thai people, and places like Hat Yai are searched for more often by locals, whereas it only makes up a relatively small portion of foreign searches. @thephuketnews

A fascinating conclusion can be drawn from these results; they show the way in which foreigners see Thailand, as opposed to how locals see it. Foreigners are still drawn to the beaten path in Thailand, its legendary triumphs. On the other hand, we can see that Thai people are interested in the more obscure places. Therefore, these infographics could offer tourists some key local recommendations. It’s also worth noting the attractions that JatRadar has noted along with the cities, and how these compare between each infographic. Many of the top sights in the infographic drawn up from foreign searches are iconic Thailand – its white beaches, chaotic markets, and dazzling islands. However, the Thai version highlights many of Thailand’s beautiful temples, offering some different attractions for travellers to the country to visit. These infographics from JetRadar show a fascinating diversity in the way locals and tourists view Thailand, giving travellers some more options for the best things to do and see here. INCREDIBLE INDIA: Humayun’s Tomb is one of the more picturesque sites in Delhi. to outnumber the middle class and very rich people. A balance has to be found soon. I visited the Gandhi family’s huge graveyard; a big green place in central downtown Delhi. Some Muslim and Buddhist temples where also on my list of places to visit but I did not have enough time to visit all of them before heading to the awards night. One thing I did enjoy during my stay was a famous Ayurveda massage. It was a wonderful treatment that used different spices to those used for massage here in Thailand. Security was strict at all the hotels,

airports and government buildings. It reminded me of the 2011 Mumbai bombings. Overall, India is a beautiful country in all aspects, but it needs to adapt to the needs of tourists so they can enjoy a peaceful vacation without having to take along lots of medicine.

Moevenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach General Manager Hansruedi Frutiger recently took a trip to Delhi, India, to receive an award on behalf of his hotel. The award event was familiar territory for the Swiss hotelier but experiencing downtown Delhi was an unforgettable and eye-opening adventure.

T

his week we look at centralized systems for home automation. This usually consists of a central hub. Let’s call this the brains of the system. A good location for this is your main MDB room (or electrical room) close to your main circuit breaker board and any low-voltage cable you may have, such as telephone wires, TV coax cables, or in newer properties, Cat 5/6 LAN cables. There are now a lot of devices on the market that allow you to re-use these existing low voltage cables not only for home automation tasks but also to stream high definition music and video around the property without having to run new unsightly cables (There are too many different devices on the market to detail here but please contact me if you would like some more information). Then using a combination of existing cables and adapter devices and some of the new wirless standards like ZWAVE, you can control and automate virtually any electrical or electronic device in your home; from lighting and window blinds or curtains to multi-room music, intruder and fire alarms, smart-door locks and CCTV systems. You can even control devices like your pool pump or your garden sprinklers. The central hub or brain is connected to all the systems you want control of. It then connects wirelessly to your smartphone or iPad al-

IN BRIEF Instagram allows caption edits

Previously, Instagram users who made a simple typo on the caption had to take the post down before reposting – a process that would delete all the social engagement (likes and comments) accumulated.

In future articles I will go into individual detail for the many different systems I have mentioned here. Happy automating!

Internet giant G oogle have agreed to lease the NASA Moffett Airfield for the next 60 years for an estimated US1.6 billion with extra funds going toward restoration of an 80-year-old hangar (Hangar One). Located south of San Francisco, it includes 1,000 acres of land with three hangars, two runways, and a large building. All will be used by Google for development and testing technology related to robotics, aviation and space exploration. A Google spokesman says they plan to spend US$200 million on improvement to the property, which includes creating an education facility for the public to learn about the airfield’s role in the history of technology.

igh-tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has reportedly added global Internet access from satellites to his vision of a future alongside sporty electric cars and private space exploration. The billionaire behind auto-maker Tesla and the SpaceX program is working on the project with satelliteindustry veteran Greg Wyler, who spent some time devoted to a similar mission at Google, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Musk and Wyler are trying to devise a feasible and relatively low-cost way to put about 700 satellites, each weighing less than 250 pounds, into orbit to provide wireless Internet anywhere on the planet, the Journal reported. The satellites would be smaller, more affordable, and more widely deployed than those currently in use commercially, according to the Journal. Ostensibly, Musk would tap into re-

sources at SpaceX to get satellites into position. SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean in October carrying a heavy load of NASA cargo and scientific samples from the International Space Station that experts hope could yield significant results. Dragon also carried crew supplies, hardware and computer resources. The SpaceX vessel is the only spacecraft currently capable of returning from the ISS with cargo. Its last mission to the space station was in April. NASA lost its ability to reach the space station alone when the shuttle program ended in 2011 after 30 years. The US space agency has helped fund private companies in the race to restore US access to the ISS. In 2010, SpaceX became the first private company to send a spacecraft to the ISS. IN BRIEF The Six Billion Dollar Man

A new day for Star Wars

S

tar Wars fans were sent into a frenzy as studio giant Disney revealed the title of the iconic franchise’s seventh episode – The Force Awakens – and said filming was over. The Force Awakens immediately shot to the top of trending topics on Twitter after Walt Disney Pictures and the official Star Wars account released the much-anticipated title. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completed principal photography,” the tweets said, with the title set in the franchise’s retro typeface in yellow and white against a background of stars. The film will now require months of post-production before its worldwide release, scheduled for December 18, 2015. It is directed by JJ Abrams, one of Hollywood’s A-list directors who recently oversaw the successful rebooting of the Star Trek franchise. Speculation about what the title means centers on it being a follow-up to The Return of the Jedi – in which Luke Skywalker was left as the only known Jedi Knight holder of the Force, with no rivals from the “dark side” Sith camp. Fan sites wonder if The Force Awakens refers to both the light side

Toy Story 4 coming 2017

Disney chief Bob Iger announced last week that Pixar will produce Toy Story 4 with plans to release the film in mid-2015. The film will be writtern by Rashida Jones and will McCormack and John Lasseter will direct. The third film in the franchise earned more than a US$1 billion in 2010 and ended with Buzz and Woody having been given away by Andy to a little girl. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before,” Lasseter said in a statement.

and dark side, Jedis and Siths. “The Force Awakens likely refers to more people becoming one with the Force, on both the good side and Dark Side,” said a blogger at slashfilm.com.. Star Wars has attracted generations of loyal fans ever since the first film arrived in 1977 recounting the adventures of Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader. Filming began in Britain in May on Episode VII. Original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will star in the new film, along with several new-

The Six Billion Dollar Man, a film inspired by The Six Million Dollar Man 1970s television series, will see Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. The project has ben stuck in development limbo for several years until Wahlberg and his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg accepted the gig. Wahlberg will play Steve Austin, a former stronaut who survived a horrific accident and had several limbs replaced with bionic systems. The film is expected to go into production in 2015.

comers including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. Other cast members include veteran actor Max von Sydow, Girls star Adam Driver, motion-capture expert Andy Serkis and Harry Potter veteran Domhnall Gleeson. Filming on the new movie was not without hiccups: in June, the 72-yearold Ford broke his leg on the set when a garage door fell and hit him at Pinewood Studios outside London. Ford is back as smuggler Solo, the 62-year-old Hamill will return as Jedi Knight Skywalker and Fisher, 57, reprises the role of Princess Leia. The movie’s screenplay is written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote two previous Star Wars films. The film is produced by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and Bryan Burk, while multiple Oscarwinner John Williams returns as the soundtrack composer. The original 1977-83 trilogy – Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi – “was followed by a prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Disney shelled out US$4 billion to buy “Star Wars” founder George Lucas’s Lucasfilm in October 2012. AFP

Movie goers do not have to watch the older Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator films in order to enjoy the upcoming Terminator: Genisys film, to be released 2015. According to actor Jai Courtney, the new installment will act as a “reset” of the long-running franchise. “That’s the awesome thing about when you play with time travel...maybe we’re introduced to a world that audiences know but circumstances can change,” he said. Terminator: Genisys will star Emilia Clarke, Schwarzenegger and Jason Clarke.

It’s all going to be part of the first ever Black Tie Muay Thai night at Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort as Singpatogn Sitnumnoi gym and Phuket Has Been Good To Us present a throwback night of fights next Saturday (November 29). A cocktail reception with bubbles will kick things off followed by dinner and free flow beverages. The money raised will enable PHBGTU to continue to expand their much-needed English education programme tat provides free English lessons to more than 1,000 underprivileged Thai children, aged 13–`8, in three government schools in Phuket. “We are thrilled to be able to bring such an exciting new event to Phuket.

that, there will be something good happening in Phuket for sure.” Coach Daeng succeeds Reuther Moreira, who helped pull the team away from the relegation zone and finished the season with the most points ever in Phuket’s history in the Division 1.

PHUKET FC HAVE BEEN busy the past two weeks as the team announced a slew of re-signings, with Japanese defender Yusuke Sato and Brazilian midfielder Andres “Andrezinho” Lopes chief among them. Defender Samsen Nima and midfielders Alef Pochi and Wasan Samansin all agreed to contract extensions as well. Sato, who scored five goals this season, signed a one year extension with the club just days after the team’s final match on November 1.

He originally joined Phuket FC at the start of the 2013 season. “I’m very happy. I’m going to give my all physically and with my heart to try to reach the club’s goal to get into the Thai Premier League,” the Japanese defender said in a statement. Meanwhile, mid-season signee Andrezinho will don the Ronins’ uniform for the 2015 season and join Sato as the team’s second international player for next season. “He is also a key player for the Club, and exactly the type of player we need to keep with us,” said team President Pariyawit “Benz” Atchariyachai.

On your marks Asian Beach Games to take over Phuket sands

JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

P

hu ket ia n s , it’s f inally here. Thousands of athletes from 45 participating nations will take over Phuket as the 4th Asian Beach Games get underway today. Though some of the events began earlier this week, including beach flag football, ju-jitsu, sambo and squash, the games’ official opening ceremony will take place today at Saphan Hin Sports Complex in Phuket Town starting at 6pm. The Games conclude on November 23 with a closing ceremony that will also take place at Saphan Hin, starting at 6:30pm. This will be the first

year the Asian Beach Games will introduce beach track and field, Muay Thai, jet-ski events, and beach wrestling. These events are just some of the 26 total sports that will take place within the next 10 days at six locations around the island. Karon Beach will see 10 sports while Nai Yang will be the home of three events (triathlon, pentahlon, and beach athletics). Patong will host nine events, Saphan Hin will see four events while Chaofa Mine will see all airsports events. The Bangnewo Dam near Cherngtalay (including Anthem Wakepark) will be the site of the water skiing and cable wakeboarding events.

Beach Games to go global, says Asian chief

Governor leads lighting ceremony for beach games PHUKET GOVERNOR NISIT Jansomwong led local officials in the lighting ceremony on Monday (November 10) in the run up to the 4th Asian Beach Games, which begin

today (November 14). Gov nisit placed the ceremonial fire, which was sent from Bangkok on the altar as a signal of the beginning of the 4th Asian Beach Games on the stage at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre in Phuket Town. Gov Nisit also announced that during the competition,

which will take place all over Phuket’s beaches with some 4,000 athletes from 45 participating nations, the construction on intersections at Central Festival (Darasamuth tunnel) and Tesco Lotus (Lotus intersection) will be lessened in order for traffic to flow as efficiently as possible.

THE INAUGURAL WORLD beach games could go ahead in 2017 featuring sports like beach track and field and beach American football, a senior Olympic official said on Wednesday (November 12). Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said the move followed the success of the Asian Beach Games, whose fourth edition starts today in Thailand with a new-look programme. The influential Association of National Olympic Committees president said the proposal would be put to the 204-member body’s general assembly in Bangkok. “The Beach Games are becoming more international, more acceptable and more economic, also because with Beach Games there’s not a lot of operational cost,” he told reporters in the Thai capital. The new event is yet to be named with the word “Olympic” trademarked. A title for the tournament will be announced following approval by the general assembly. Sheikh Ahmad said several cities had expressed an interest in hosting the global beach games. The biannual Asian Beach Games were started by the Olympic Council of Asia in 2008 and have taken place in Bali, Muscat in Oman and Haiyang in China. AFP thephuketnews

Soccer Sevens ready to take center stage FOOTBALL

H

undreds of footballers will grace the island the next two weeks as the local sports scene gets a strong shot to the arm. The 12th CLA Phuket International Soccer Sevens and the 9th CLA Andaman International Soccer Sevens will take place the next two weekends with over 90 teams vying for a share of several titles in the annual football fest. The 9 th CLA Andaman International Soccer Sevens will take place November 15 – 16 while the 12th CLA Phuket

International Soccer Sevens occurs November 22 – 23. Both events, organised by the same folks who host the Songkran International Soccer Sevens in April, will take place at the

sports stadium at Thanyapura Sports Club in Thalang. Both leagues pit several clubs in different age and gender brackets – all of them taking part in seven-a-side matches – with

teams hailing from over 20 different countries, including China, Australia, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. Several local teams are also participating, including Super Six stalwarts Pita Bar Phuketeers. The Phuket International Soccer Sevens has both the open and masters over-40 brackets, while the Andaman Soccer Sevens has both the open and masters over-35 brackets. An awards ceremony is scheduled for November 23 at Tai Pan Nightclub in Patong. The Phuket News is a proud media partner.

Vagabonds take the Plate at the BKK International 7s RUGBY Pat Cotter phuketrugby@gmail.com

VAGABONDS RECOVERED from their loss in the Cup semi final to win the Plate and finish 3rd overall at the Bangkok International 7s last week at the Pattana International School.

The intense Plate final match saw the Vagabonds defeat Malaysian-side Serdang Angels, a team that took an early 14-0 lead before the Vagabonds’ Percy Habana broke through with a score. Following another try by Serdang, the Vagabonds rallied and with two minutes left in the match, Michael Whippy and

Percy Habana teamed-up for three quick tries. Steven Cox went over in the last play of the game to seal a dramatic 26-19 victory and claim the Plate to

finish third overall. The trophy was presented to the Vagabonds by All Black 7s legend Lote Raikabula Still, the victory was a consolation after the Bangkok heat and injuries took their toll on a resilient Vagabonds team. The Vagabonsds lost the semi final Cup match against Malaysian-side KPM 26-10.

Virus floors Kangaroos ahead of 4 Nations final RUGBY LEAGUE

D

efending champions Australia cancelled training on Wednesday (November 12) ahead of the Four Nations final with New Zealand after five players were quarantined with a virus. But coach Tim Sheens said he hoped the outbreak was under control and was confident the Kangaroos will field their top side in Saturday’s decider (November 15) in Wellington. “We’ve had a bit of disruption this week with that bug in the camp, but we’re confident going into the weekend’s game,” Sheens told reporters. Medical staff isolated the ill players, who were not named, in an attempt to prevent it sweeping through the the team. The virus has disrupted

the Kangaroos’ build-up since they arrived in Wellington this week after a late qualification for the final when they beat Samoa 44-18 in Wollongong last Sunday (November 9). The world champions suffered a shock loss to the unbeaten Kiwis in the first round before bouncing back with wins over England and then Samoa, but Sheens believes it will be tough to maintain the momentum with the short turnaround between games. “I don’t think anyone gave us much chance and certainly after game one, they gave us no chance,” he said. “Now some are saying we’re favourites, although I don’t know how they figure that. “We’ve had to come down here on a short week and play them in their own back yard, so that’s going to be tough.” AFP

Thai skier banned for ‘manipulated’ entry SKIING

KICKFLIP – The rain didn’t stop a large turnout for the

DC Pro Skate Tour arriving at Phuket International Academy Skatepark. A huge thank you to Matt Miller and the rest of the crew for not only putting on an amazing show, but spending quality 1-on-1 time with the kids and inspiring a new generation of skate enthusiasts. Miller also took a photo with PIA student Ben McMillan, who helped initiate the fundraising efforts to get the skate park built.

THAILAND’S OLYMPIC committee said it would be more careful about endorsing athletes Wednesday (November 12) after former child prodigy violinist Vanessa Mae was banned from competitive skiing over her rigged entry into the Winter Olympics. The 36-year-old music star became Thailand’s first ever female Olympic skier when she competed at the Sochi Games in Russia this year, coming 67th and last in the

giant slalom. But Mae was Tuesday (November 11) given a fouryear ban from all International Skiing Federation (FIS) events over her “manipulated” qualification for the Games. The FIS said that a hearing panel had established that Mae’s qualifying event, held in a blizzard in January in Slovenia was riddled with irregularities. “We endorsed her as our representative because we wanted to participate in the Winter Games, not because we wanted to win,” the Thai

official added. The FIS said the races on January 18-19 resulted in points calculations “that do not reflect the true performance of the competitors that participated ... in particular the points awarded to Vanessa Vanakorn”. Two giant slalom races in the Krvavec resort on January 19 were recorded as involving a competitor who was not present, while someone else who fell over was placed second after having 10 seconds taken off her time, the FIS said. Swansea stun Arsenal as Southampton soar FOOTBALL

A

rsenal missed the chance to go fourth in the English Premier League after Swansea came from behind to beat the Gunners 2-1 with two late goals at the Liberty Stadium last Sunday (November 9). Victory saw south Wales club Swansea leapfrog Arsenal into fifth place as Arsene Wenger’s side suffered only their second league defeat of the season following their loss to leaders Chelsea. Arsenal were on course for victory when in the 63rd minute Alexis Sanchez scored his sixth goal in four games in all competitions. But Swansea equalised 15 minutes from time when, from 25 yards out, Gylfi Sigurdsson curled in a brilliant free-kick into the top corner. Barely three minutes later, Swansea were in front. Substitute Bafetimbi Gomis, who’d only just been sent on by manager Garry Monk, rose above the Arsenal defence to head in his first Premier League goal. It was the second time in a

week that Arsenal squandered a lead, having been 3-0 up before being held to a 3-3 draw at home to Anderlecht in the Champions League the previous Tuesday (November 4). Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker accused his side of not playing “serious football”. “The game was completely in our hands,” Mertesacker told Sky Sports. “We have potential, but unless we play that serious football any team will punish us.” In other news, Southampton striker Shane Long came off the bench to bag a brace as the Premier League high-fliers clinched a 2-0 win over Leicester last Saturday (November 8). Long netted twice in the space of five minutes late in the second half at St Mary’s and the Republic of Ireland star’s first league goals for the club ensured the Saints will remain second in the table heading into the international break. Despite a turbulent closeseason marked by the departure of five key players and manager Mauricio Pochettino,

Southampton have been in inspired form under new boss Ronald Koeman. They have won eight of their last nine league matches and are starting to believe they could claim a shock place in the Champions League via a top-four finish. Meanwhile, Diego Costa continued his remarkable start to life in the Premier League by earning unbeaten leaders Chelsea a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield last Saturday (November 8). The Brazil-born Spain striker claimed his 10th goal of the campaign on 67 minutes. The goal completed Chelsea’s fightback after Gary Cahill had cancelled out a ninth-minute goal by Emre Can and strengthened Jose Mourinho’s side’s grip on first place. Liverpool had been hoping to erase memories of the loss in last season’s corresponding game that effectively cost them the league title and Can’s first goal for the club gave them an ideal start. It was just what Rodgers’s side needed to calm early nerves and silence the pre-

match taunts of Mourinho, who ha d t a ken obv iou s pleasure in referring to last season’s fixture before the renewal of hostilities. But on this occasion Liverpool could only hold on to the lead for five minutes. The league leaders levelled when Cesc Fabregas’s corner was turned goalwards by Costa and John Terry’s header forced an instant reflex save from Mignolet. With the Liverpool defence static, Cahill pounced and despite Mignolet making a strong effort to keep the ball out, goal-line technology, relayed to referee Anthony Taylor’s wristwatch, proved it had crossed the line. Also on Sunday (November 9), Newcastle United’s impressive revival continued with a 2-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion that took them into the top half. Goals from Ayoze Perez and Fabricio Coloccini at The Hawthorns saw Newcastle, who struggled at the start of the season, extend their unbeaten league run to five straight games – a sequence that now includes four successive victories. England to look for win over Springboks RUGBY UNION

ngland prop Joe Marler has urged the 2015 World Cup hosts to channel the frustration following their defeat by New Zealand when they face South Africa in the second of four November internationals at Twickenham on Saturday (November 15). England established a 14-11 half-time lead against world champions New Zealand but the All Blacks won 24-21 as they beat Stuart Lancaster’s side for the fifth successive match, “Our levels of frustration are high and the game review was very honest. I can’t really use the words that I’d like to use!” Marler said. “We’ll take the frustration into this weekend. From a personal point of view it’s important to use that frustration to spur you on that little bit more.” England have not beaten South Africa in 11 matches dating back to 2006, with their best performance a 1414 draw in Port Elizabeth two years ago and they remain the

only major side the Red Rose brigade haven’t defeated since Lancaster became coach. Marler played the first of his 23 tests against the Springboks, who suffered a shock 29-15 defeat by Ireland in their European tour opener on Saturday (November 8), and hasn’t forgotten the experience. “Against every international team you’ve got to be physical otherwise you’re going to get pumped, but South Africa as a nation stand very tall and proud.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has hit out at the supporters who booed fly-half Rhys Priestland as he made his way onto the pitch during last Saturday’s (November 8) loss to Australia. Priestland, 27, was jeered

by a small band of home fans in the 55,000 crowd at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium after being sent on to replace the injured Dan Biggar shortly after half-time in Wales’s 33-28 defeat. “I only heard today that he was booed,” Gatland told journalists on Tuesday. “He’s a young man who at one stage contemplated giving the game away because it wasn’t worth taking that sort of personal criticism.” Priestland converted a 64th-minute penalty try to put Wales 28-27 ahead against Australia, only for Bernard Foley to give the tourists victory with a late drop-goal and penalty. Federer eyes 1,000 win landmark

Roger Federer has set his sights on another milestone as the 17-time Grand Slam champion eyes the 1,000th win of his illustrious career. Federer’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Japan’s Kei Nishikori at the ATP Tour Finals last Tuesday (November 11) took him to 70 match wins for the season and up to 993 career wins from his 1,219 matches. The 33-year-old can add three more wins at the Tour Finals if he goes all the way to take the title for the seventh time and join Jimmy Connors (1,253), and Ivan Lendl (1,071) as the only men to have broken the 1,000 barrier. With seven Wimbledon titles, five US Open crowns, four Aussie Opens and a French Open, Federer has already experienced almost every high the sport can offer. AFP
