The Phuket News understands that the Marine Office order (9/2557), effective since Wednesday (October 15), could mean the work will take at least a year or more to complete. “No boats will be allowed to moor for long periods anywhere in Chalong Bay Marina, or within a 200-metre radius of the seawall [construction area],” Phuket Marine Office Director Phuripat Teerakulpisut told The
Phuket News. However, he said that boats will still be permitted to enter the marina on a temporary basis to use its onestop service centre. “Chalong Bay Marina is undergoing renovations and we are also constructing a sea wall. We need to ensure that boats do not obstruct construction, he said. In May last year, Golden Plan Co., Ltd drew up plans for a seawall with

the purpose of protecting yachts in the marina from strong waves. Earlier this year, Prommitr S A F T Co Ltd won the construction bid from the Phuket Marine Department. The 450-day contract to construct the seawall was effective as of August 21, 2014, and expires in November, next year. The seawall is being built just to the south of Chalong Bay Pier and Chalong Bay Marina.

The governor’s announcement follows a number of complaints about “immigration service fees” allegedly collected by Patong Immigration officers, for between B200-B500 on top of the B1,900 fee for extending a permit to stay. The government’s working process must be clean, clear and be able to scrutinize.” “The Damrongtham Centre is a place where everyone can make a complaint. On this point, I will look to establish an English section to receive complaints from foreigners.”

Most recently, earlier this year, on January 19, the B10 million, 80-foot cruise boat Lady Andaman sank after hitting a concrete block, just 200 metres from the Chalong Pier. The skipper managed to get the badly leaking boat to the pier nearby and evacuate passengers before it finally sank.

Bypass rd lane expansion ‘reduces’ traffic by 15pc Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th
Phuket pulling out all stops for Beach Games he value of confirmed deposits for hotel bookings during the upcoming Asian Beach Games has already exceeded B38 million, with preparations about 25 per cent complete. To prepare and organize the games, which will be held from November 14-23 at various Phuket beach venues, the government has already approved a budget of around B800 million, to be allocated by the Sport Authority of Thailand. Speaking at a press conference recently to update on preparations progress, Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong said that some 2,000 athletes will be staying at 40 hotels. “ We’ve coordinated for athletes to stay in accommodations near the sports zones to avoid traffic problems. We’ve been working with the [land] transport department and plan to erect signs [related to the] Asian Beach Game, as well as transport for athletes between venues sport areas.”
T
The conference was given the following updates: The games will host some 2,000 athletes who will

compete in more than 160 competitions among 26 sports, including beach handball, footvolley, air sports, beach water polo, triathlon and others. There will be emergency medical services coordinated among seven hospitals with staff standing by near the sport zones, while security will be made a priority. A Grand Opening event is planned on November 14 at the Saphan Hin Indoor Gymnasium in Phuket Town. More than 2,450 volunteers will be trained in the com-
ing weeks to assist athletes.” Thailand Minister of Tourism and Sport, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul reiterated to all officials and officers that security is of the utmost importance: “We have to support each other. The Tourism Authority of Thailand should provide guide books to tourists … The Asian Beach Games should be made known to all tourists and locals, and spread the word to the world that we will not charge admission.”
COMMUTERS ON THE north of the island heading into town via the bypass road may have noticed shorter than usual waits this past week. Extra lanes on the southbound section of the Chalermprakiet Ror IX Road, or bypass road were added last Friday (October 10) with the hope of easing the traffic problems at the Tesco Lotus intersection. About ten police officers gathered at the intersection (where Phra Phuket Kaew Rd and the bypass road meet) to help traffic flow while the lane expansion was finished on Friday.. Maj Rungrit Ratanapakdee explained that the expanded section of the bypass southbound road starts from A2 Resort to the area in front of The Base condominium by Sansiri and will include a U-turn near the area. “The lane expansion was actually an idea from Phuket Provincial Commander Patchara Boonyasit. We expected a decrease of about 10-15 per cent of the road traffic, and I
Workers on Friday (October 10) begin the lane expansions. Photo : Saran Mitrarat think it has been successful so far,” Phuket Highway Office Director Samak Luadwonghad. However, he noted that the new expansion lane is not the main problem area of the south bound lanes (on the north side of the Tesco Lotus intersection). “The main problem is the turn lane to Patong,” he said. “However, it is not possible at this time to expand there due to the construction needs. We will expand this lane as soon as possible.”
Asked about any alternative routes motorists heading into town on the bypass road could consider, Director Samak advised: “If you’re coming from Koh Kaew and going to Kathu or Patong, use the road next to British International School, that goes to Loch Palm Golf Course. “The best we can do at the moment is ask the construction company to work as fast as they can to level and smooth the surface to handle more traffic,” he said.

P
ublic and private sector groups have agreed to help fund the installation of more CCTV cameras for Phuket’s main tourist spots following discussions between OrBorTor heads and local hoteliers, Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong revealed Monday (October 13). City of Phuket, local administrations and tourist businesses will work together to set up CCTV for all tourists destinations in Phuket to help prevent crime in the areas, Governor Nisit told the press following a meeting at Phuket
provincial Hall with Phuket Provincial Police chief Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit and business leaders. “Tourist safety is crucial for Phuket. Whenever crime rears its ugly head, it
can severely affect the tourism industry, which raises the question of how we can better prevent crime and ensure safety for all tourists with limited manpower,” said Governor Nisit.
Currently we have only 1,000 police officers on patrol in Phuket. If we set up more CCTV cameras across the island, especially in tourist spots, we can help ensure better safety for tourists and help police track criminals more easily. Phuket currently has 647 CCTV cameras operated by the police and another 611 operated by the OrBorTor. At least 10 hotels have agreed to help with funding the additional cameras, said the governor. However, he did not reveal the proposed number of new cameras to be installed nor the amount of funding required.
Nai Harn surf claims German tourist A GERMAN MAN IN HIS thirties has died and an Asian man is recovering in hospital after lifeguards pulled the two from the surf at Nai Harn Beach on October 8. Both men, believed to be tourists and possibly travelling together, got into difficulties in the water around 5pm after ignoring red flags and lifeguards’ verbal warnings not to go swimming in the red-flag zone at the popular beach in the south of Phuket. Lifeguards were able to resuscitate the Asian male but attempts to revive the German were unsuccessful, said Head
Lifeguard Jula Nontree. The Asian is recovering at Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO) Hospital. The name of the German victim is being withheld until consular officials have confirmed his identity and informed relatives of his death. “We tried to stop them going in the sea but they ignored our warnings. We followed them, expecting to have to rescue them,” said Jula. The two men were given CPR. However, only the Asian responded to resuscitation. “Even though the red flags were out, there were a lot of

Purple morning glory dispute on Karon Beach PHUKET: KARON LOCALS are still angry after purple morning glory flowers were removed from the beach in preparation for next month’s 4th Asian Beach Games. The contracting company in charge of making preparations for the event, to be played in beaches all over Phuket from November 14 to 23, removed the purple flowers along an approximate 1.5 km stretch of Karon Beach on October 7. But in a meeting on October 8 Ittiporn Sangkaew, Deputy Mayor of Karon, agreed that officials will re-plant the morning
glory flowers – which bloom from October to December – shortly after the event ends on November 24. Karon Municipality, along with help local residents, are usually in charge of improving
and maintaining the morning glory flowers. “I think Karon Beach has more than enough space for competition – there was no need to destroy our beautiful landscape like this. Karon
Municipality should have suggested another option to [the company] instead of ignoring the problem,” Karon Subdistrict chief (Kamnan) Winai Chidchiew told the Phuket News.. Regional Environmental Office 15 (REO15) based in Phuket confirmed that removing the morning glory has not affected the local environment. “Morning glory is easy to plant and fast to grow, I think it can make a comeback after the games,” Dr Pornsri Suthanarak the Director of REO15 told The Phuket News.
The meeting was held at the Patong Resort and Hotel in Kathu and hosted by the country’s Minister of Tourism and Sport, Ms Kobkarn Wattanawarangkul.
Region’s issues discussed safety high on the agenda OFFICIALS FROM PHUKET, Phang Nga, and Krabi met on Thursday (October 9) to begin discussions on how best to ensure continued growth of safe tourism in the Andaman region. In attendance were governors from the three provinces, as well as representatives of businesses in the tourism industry. Topics on the agenda centred around the rapid growth of tourism in the region and how to renovate run-down tourist spots as well as boosting security for visitors. A majority of the attendees were in agreement that the government should improve regulation of transportation in the tourist spots, as well as introducing effective solutions for trash disposal, reducing pollution and the provision of safe, clean water. To improve safety for foreign visitors it was suggested that more security cameras should be installed at tourist attractions as well as increasing police patrols. Recruiting and educating more ‘quality’ multi-lingual tour guides and furnishing them with official identification cards to improve relations with tourists was also one of the meeting’s hot topics Ms Kobkarn said the Ministry of Tourism is working hard to address a wide range of tourism related issues across the region. “There are some issues that can be dealt with immediately but other issues involving different departments may take longer to resolve,” said Ms Kobkarn. thephuketnews

Russian skimmer nabbed in Kamala Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th

27-year-old Russian man was arrested Thursday (October 9) after using his electronic skimming card to make illegal cash withdrawals totalling near B100,000 from three branches of Kasikorn Bank in the Kamala area. Kasikorn Bank reported to new Police Chief, Pol Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit that there was a suspected foreigner withdrawing money from many different ATM machines of the bank from September 29 – 30 and again on October 5. After checking the CCTV in every branch, the police team went to arrest Nicolai Petrishin, 27, at the Novotel Hotel in Kamala. The skimmer had arrived in Thailand on a tourist visa for the first time on September 28 with a reported 50 skimming cards from a Russian gang back in his native Moscow. Mr Nicolai confessed that
Muscovite Nicolai Petrishin reportedly was in possession of 50 skimming cards he got all the cards from his country and targeted Thailand since he could get a visa upon arrival. After withdrawing about B100,000 from several ATM machines, he had to separate money into three parts: one for him, while the other two parts were sent back to Russia to the gang who initially gave him the cards along with 46 sets of pin codes. Pol Maj Gen Pachara added that the team is gathering information about CCTV locations and doing further
survey for more installation. “The cases we can close are almost all because of CCTV cameras. We are checking for more places that need cameras to be installed, which will be linked with Google Earth for more efficiency. Police in each area have to assign some representatives to take care of the CCTV camera in their respective area and immediately repair them if they show any error,” Pol Maj Gen Pachara said. The is the second time in
three weeks that a skimmer had been arrested thanks to help from CCTV footage as electronic skimming has become an increasingly common crime in Phuket. A group of Bulgarians were arrested on September 27 in Patong for skimming tens of thousands of Thai Baht from several ATM machines in the area. In May, police arrested a group of foreigners who stole over B700,000 in a five-person skimming operation.

erial 7-Eleven store stickup man, Piriya Tungbanjerd, 41, is expected to survive after being shot by police when he attempted to rob one of the franchise's stores in Thalang on October 8. Piriya is recovering under police guard at Vachira Hospital from a single gun shot wound to his upper leg, which shattered his right hip, as he tried to flee undercover officers stationed at the store in Baan Tha Rua on Thepkasattri Road near the Heroines' Monument. Piriya is suspected of committing a string of at least six armed robberies of 7-Eleven stores around Phuket in the days prior to his arrest. The store happened to be one of several stores across Phuket where undercover police were disguised as store employees in an island-wide sting operation to catch the culprit. The gunfight took place when Piriya tried to rob the store at 23:40pm. Piriya reportedly fired five shots at the undercover officers as he fled the store.

Other laws will be combined in order to make the policy effective. “In this case, the elephants obviously do not have a permit but the Environment Act can be used, as the operator brought them into the

natural resources and space. “Around 10 years ago, there were almost 1,000 elephants in Phuket. “There were many problems as we just don’t have the space, so the governor launched the policy.”

Getting into high gear
P
huket’s annual highseason preparations are officially underway with key figures chairing an opening ceremony at Loma Park, Patong Beach, on October 9 (see page 15). As usual there’s a mixture of anticipation and trepidation in the air as reports come in of a drop off in the Russian market, which has been a steady source of income for the island’s tourism related businesses for the past three years or so, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as Anton Makhrov points out in his column this week (see page 14 Business News); a blessing in disguise, perhaps, for businesses that would rather attract quality tourists, as opposed to a large volume of package tourists armed with their own packed lunches and spending most of their time on the island being ferried about by big tour opera-
tors that like to keep a close eye on their charges – rarely letting them out to put money in local pockets. However, the annual influx of approximately one million Chinese tourists seems set to continue to flow for the foreseeable future with the opening of a brand new Chinese Consulate in Phuket at the end of this month (see page 15). As always, there’s still a long list of issues that need to be ironed out if Phuket is to solidly establish itself as a trouble-free ‘quality’ tourist destination. This time around, though, it seems that the authorities are that much more serious about finally addressing the myriad of problems Phuket has been facing for years. Plans are afoot to boost security for tourists with more CCTV cameras planned for
tourist hot spots , and safety was at the top of the agenda at a meeting headed by the country’s Minister of Tourism and Sport, which was attended by provincial heads from Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga. On the table were topics such as regulating transport, trash disposal, reducing pollution and cleaning up water supplies, as well as employing hordes of high-quality tour guides (see page 4 for these stories). Every year, though, something always comes along which threatens to blindside well-laid plans to keep Phuket attractive as an international destination. Nevertheless, robust Phuket has weathered its fair share of storms and even the worst scenarios imaginable eventually become Hollywood movies or something to chuckle about over a few drinks.

Excise tax is applied to all vehicles in Thailand, regardless whether they’re imported or produced here. The tax rate varies depending upon the type of vehicle, engine size, horse power, fuel type (gasohol/E20 compatible) and engine type (e.g. hybrid, NGV, gasoline). Excise tax on a 2-door pick-up with less than 3250cc engine is around 3 per cent, while a sedan with an E20 compatible gasoline engine less than 2000cc and less than 220hp is around 25 per cent. Using your comparison of a new Honda Jazz, the numbers I get are quite different though. In Thailand the base model “S” manual transmission is B555,000. In the UK, the similar “S” model 1.2 litre manual transmission is around B610,000 (£11,695) and in France the base model “Elegance” 1.2 litre is B620,000 (15,210 EUR) - very similar prices. Richard

Thai police agree to foreign probe T
The famous Khao San Road, is hoarded with tourists all year.
The circus at the end of the road LAST WEDNESDAY (OCtober 15), Thai authorities began their attempts to return a sense of order to the iconic chaos of Khao San Rd. The beginning of the campaign to “clean up” Bangkok’s Khao San Rd and “return the footpaths to pedestrians”. One of the most popular haunts for travellers, Khao San’s appeal has always been its energy — chaotic yet unique and colourful. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) proposed action to systematise the stalls and vendors on the road have generated various reactions, from dismay to uncertainty, from local business owners. According to the BMA, some of the new regulations include a guarantee of a 1m-wide space on footpaths for pedestrians, and that the makeshift stalls will be put away every night after the market closes. Another important point the authorities emphasise is that no vendors’ carts or tools should be stacked visibly on the road, day or night. “The government should focus more on something that makes the country better without affecting anyone’s livelihood,” said a 38-year-old female vendor last week. She sells handmade products from a stall and believes that the authorities should first look into overcharging by tuk-tuk and taxi drivers. “If the vendors are left with no choice, they may start to resist.” As of now, it is not clear how much the plan will affect vendors, their business or the visual landscape of the road. Often serving as an urban arrival lounge for many backpackers in Southeast Asia, who stay in the area before continuing on their travels, Khao San, as of last week, still depicts a familiar scene. Foreign tourists in flip-flops and seemingly unwashed clothes walking around, drinking beer in one of the guesthouses or searching for the best party. @thephuketnews
Food carts, pop-up massage stores, unruly T-shirts stalls, roadside dreadlocks hair stylists, loud music from one of the clubs — this is the “exotic” Orient at its most laid-back. Most guesthouses and hotels have been upgraded, but it’s the stalls that give the place a carnival atmosphere. The sense of controlled madness is an integral part of the area, typifying the best and worst of mass tourism. After the fiasco of the Koh Tao murders and amid postcoup economic uncertainty, the state of Thai tourism is under the spotlight. As of June, the number of tourists has declined 9 per cent from last year. The world-famous Khao San Rd, however, seems to have survived the impact relatively unscathed — at least judging from the number of people on the street as high season approaches. As the plan to spruce up the street is set into motion, the question is whether the new look will be loved or hated by its stakeholders. Many of the street vendors find the plan too strict — for now, the authorities will get rid of structures that intrude into footpaths and those that were built without a permit. “How do you expect me to make a living after this?” another vendor, a 33-year-old man who requested anonymity said. He has been selling clothes on the footpaths of Khao San for more than 10 years. He believes that the new regulations are a precursor to the end of his street entrepreneurship. “Is this what the government does when they say they promise to bring happiness back to the people?” No one is quite sure how Khao San will look and feel if the stalls are reorganised — or removed, as some fear. The plan begins today, but it will take at least one to two weeks for regulars to really see the change. Bangkok Post
hailand has agreed in principle to allow a team of observers from Britain and Myanmar to observe judicial procedures in the Koh Tao murder case, which has sparked a barrage of media criticism in both countries. The move was approved during a meeting of officials including national police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang, Foreign Ministry deputy permanent secretary Kiattikhun Chartprasert, British ambassador Mark Kent and Myanmar ambassador Win Maung. Details of how the monitoring will work in practice are pending further discussion. The meeting came one day after Hugo Swire, the British minister for Southeast Asia, summoned Thai charge d’affaires Nadthavathna Krishnamra to raise concerns about the investigation into the September 15 murders of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, on Koh Tao. Mr Swire stressed that “there was a real concern in the UK about how the investigation has been handled by the Thai authorities” and “that it was crucial for the investigation to be conducted in a fair and transparent way”. He also noted “his concern about the way that the police had engaged with the media on the case, and reiterated that the UK police stood ready to assist with the investigation and subsequent legal process”, insisting the British government and the victims’ families need to receive regular updates on the investigation’s progress. Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said Pol Gen Somyot used the three-hour meeting on Tuesday (October 14) to assure the two envoys that the Thai government is handling

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-Ocha meanwhile welcomed the idea, saying the Thai government is willing to explain the full details of the case, since officers have been handling the matter competently. But he denied that the Thai charge d’affaires in the UK had been “summoned”. “They did not summon us. We went to provide clarification to them,” he said. “Myanmar and Britain monitor Thai media, including social media, which could have confused them,” Gen Prayut said. “It is quite normal for them to ask for clarification in the case. Thani, the Koh Samui Provincial Court yesterday proceeded with its preliminary hearings involving key prosecution witnesses. Maung Maung, 23, testified against his two friends, Win Zaw Htun and Zaw Lin, who are alleged to have killed Mr Miller and raped and murdered Ms Witheridge. Thawatchai Siangjaew, directorgeneral of Office of Public Prosecution Region 8, said his team is still waiting for the final part of a re-investigation report from police. Prosecutors earlier found that two parts of the investigation report were incomplete. He added that police investigators have laid an additional charge against the two Myanmar suspects. The new charge is of murder with intent to conceal the crime and avoid prosecution. Bangkok Post

Record bust in Cambodia highlights boom in US dollar H
e may be just the police chief of Battambang, a languid riverside town in western Cambodia, but recently people have taken to calling Brig Gen Sar Theth the $7 million man. On September 19, Brig Gen Theth’s officers tracked three Thai men in a pick-up truck as it passed through a remote border checkpoint from Thailand. When the truck stopped in the Cambodian district of Phnom Proek, the police pounced. Inside, said Brig Gen Theth, they found three cardboard boxes packed with $7.16 million (B232.6 million) in counterfeit 100-dollar bills, the largest seizure of fake US notes in Southeast Asia in about a decade, and the biggest-ever in Cambodia. “If I close my eyes and touched it, I wouldn't know it was fake,” he said, rubbing one of the seized notes between thumb and forefinger at Battambang police headquarters. According to the US Secret Service, whose agents investigate financial crime worldwide alongside their better-known role as presidential bodyguards, the huge bust points to a well-oiled and growing
counterfeit operation in neighbouring Thailand, where identical notes had previously been seized. The alleged involvement of Thai military personnel - the three men arrested were serving or former officers of the Royal Thai Navy - could also embarrass Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-Ocha. Since seizing power in a May 22 military coup, he has vowed to crack down on organised crime. The men deny any wrongdoing, and the Thai navy said it was awaiting the conclusion of the investiga-
tion before deciding whether to take any action. The United States has more than $1 trillion cash in global circulation, three-quarters of which lies outside the country, according to the Secret Service. Tackling counterfeiting is key to maintaining the dollar's credibility as the de facto world currency. Less than a quarter of 1 per cent of that $1 trillion - or about $2.5 billion - are fakes, said J Kevin Traylor, a Secret Service agent based at the US Embassy in Bangkok.
“For the amount of currency out there, we have very little counterfeiting,” he said. “That's why the dollar is trusted.” By comparison, global losses from credit, debit and prepaid card fraud in 2012 totalled about $11.3 billion, according to the Nilson Report, an industry newsletter. In South America, where narcotrafficking and counterfeiting often go hand in hand, big seizures of fake bills are not uncommon. In June, the Secret Service helped the Peruvian police arrest a suspected forger along with $4.5 million in fakes. But such seizures are rare in Southeast Asia. The Cambodian bust could suggest both an upsurge in counterfeiting and better cooperation between the Secret Service and local police. For the Secret Service, seizing notes is secondary to finding the printing presses and shutting them down. The agency was created in 1865 as a branch of the US Treasury to tackle rampant counterfeiting after the Civil War. Royal Thai Navy spokesman
Rear Adm Kan Deeubol confirmed that the three Thai men arrested on September 19 were serving or former naval officers. “They were arrested after allegedly trying to change fake bills with a Cambodian contact who was actually a police informant,” said Brig Gen Theth. One of them – Chamras Pongsart, 52, a navy captain – was released after two days. “He was not involved,” said Brig Gen Theth. The two suspects still in custody are: Pramote Raisiri, 48, described in Thai media reports as a navy sub-lieutenant; and Kittithamet Meethekulsawat, 47. “They have not been suspended, because the investigation is under way and we don't know if they really committed wrongdoing,” said Rear Adm Kan. The two Thai suspects have been charged with storing and transporting counterfeit currency, and face between five and 20 years in jail if found guilty. Their Cambodian lawyer, Chim Dara, told Reuters they denied any wrongdoing. Bangkok Post
China inflation hits 5-year low Australia shifts MH370 search south INFLATION IN CHINA fell to 1.6 per cent in September, the government said Wednesday (October 15), below analysts’ forecasts and the lowest in the world’s second-largest economy for almost five years. The consumer price index (CPI) figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics represented a slowdown in inflation from 2.0 per cent in August. It was the lowest since January 2010. Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had predicted 1.7 per cent. The figures fall well short
of the 3.5 per cent annual target set by the government in March, and signal that deflationary pressures are rising. Moderate inf lation can be a boon to consumption as it encourages consumers to buy before prices go up, while falling prices encourage shoppers to delay purchases and companies to put off investment, both of which can weigh on growth. The latest figures give authorities more room to take steps to stimulate the economy, as statistics suggest that Chinese expansion – which stood at 7.7 per cent last year,
maintaining its slowest pace in more than a decade – is weakening. “China’s soft inf lation profile heightens the risk of deflation, thus requiring further monetary policy easing,” ANZ analysts said. China’s exports and imports both rose more than expected, Customs data showed Monday (October 13) in a positive signal, but analysts warned that fundamentals remained weak. The last PPI increase was in January 2012, when it rose 0.7 per cent. Bangkok Post
INVESTIGATORS WEDNESday (October 15) confirmed that the priority search area for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has moved further south as end-of-flight scenarios indicated it may have spiralled into the Indian Ocean. Seven months after the Boeing jet disappeared with 239 people on board, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, leading the hunt for the jet, said ongoing analysis had helped refine the zone where an underwater search began this week. “The latest analyses indicates that the underwater search should be prioritised further south within the wide search area for the next phase of the search,” it said. Despite an extensive hunt for the plane, which was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it mysteriously turned southwards on March 8, no sign of it has been found. Aviation experts had little to go on besides the satellite communications from the plane, information they have used to pinpoint a search area in the vast ocean off western Australia. They believe the best hope of finding the plane is within the seventh arc, or the final
Malasyian Airlines MH370 went missing seven months ago. satellite “handshake” from the plane, estimated to be when it was in descent. The ATSB said Wednesday that when all elements of the analysis so far were taken into account, it indicated that the aircraft “may be located within relatively close proximity to the arc”, although further south than initially thought. An ATSB report in June had put the priority search zone above an underwater feature named Broken Ridge, more than 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) west of Perth. But the new analysis puts it south of this feature, confirming earlier suggestions. Analysis of the satellite data and end-of-flight simulations was ongoing, and this work could result in further changes to where the search was conducted, the ATSB added. “The simulator activities
involved fuel exhaustion of the right engine followed by flame out of the left engine with no control inputs,” it said in an update on the flight path analysis. “This scenario resulted in the aircraft entering a descending spiralling low bank angle left turn and the aircraft entering the water in a relatively short distance after the last engine went out.” The analysis of communications and flight data has been used to determine the first underwater areas to be scoured, with the first ship starting its scan of the ocean depths this week. The Malaysia-contracted GO Phoenix is using sophisticated sonar technology experts hope will detect large pieces of debris such as an engine or fuselage. It will be joined two other ships in the weeks ahead. AFP thephuketnews

Pistorius presses bid to avoid jail at sentencing O
scar Pistorius tried to show he is the ideal candidate for house arrest Tuesday (October 14), as the judge heard the final defence witnesses in the Paralympic gold medallist’s sentencing hearing. The star sprinter’s longtime manager Peet van Zyl took the witness stand for the second day to outline Pistorius’s charity work, an important component of the athlete’s strategy to avoid serving time
behind bars. On Monday (October 13), prison official Joel Maringa recommended that 27-year-old Pistorius should receive three years “correctional supervision” through house arrest for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He should also clean a Pretoria museum for 16 hours a month, Maringa said. Pistorius was found guilty last month of negligently killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013. The double-amputee athlete was cleared of the more serious charge of murder. The so-called “Blade Runner” could face up to 15 years in prison, or could dodge a jail term altogether with a noncustodial sentence. Judge Thokozile Masipa will likely make her decision today (October 17). Both the state and defence then have 14 days to appeal Judge Masipa’s decision. AFP

Mass graves dot Mexican city of missing students

THE HILLS AROU ND THE southern Mexican town of Iguala have been used by criminals to bury scores of victims. At least 80 sets of human remains have been unearthed so far, and authorities are investigating whether recently discovered mass graves contain 43 students who vanished more than two weeks ago. Nearby, 28 badly burned bodies were found inside five burial pits on October 4.
As authorities dig up bodies, the city’s dirty secret is exposed: Its police force is accused of being in cahoots with the Guerreros Unidos gang. Anger over the case boiled over on Monday (October 13) as fellow students torched a Guerrero state government building in the provincial capital of Chilpancingo, demanding Governor Angel Aguirre’s resignation. Prosecutors have detained
26 gang-linked cops accused of shooting at busloads of students on September 26 in a case that sparked international condemnation. Four gang members were also detained over the night of violence that left six people dead and 43 of the apprentice teachers missing. The mayor, his wife and the police chief have gone into hiding as investigators seek to question them over the attack. AFP

Leaders push fight against Ebola The US and UN leaders called for “more robust” international efforts to tackle Ebola, after medics in Liberia demanded danger money to treat patients in what officials termed the worst health crisis of modern times. The call from US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon came as doctors and nurses in Liberia went on strike to demand higher pay to care for Ebola patients. The epidemic has killed more than 4,000 people this year, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. AFP

Opportunities on the horizon as Russian market matures Anton Makrov
Understanding the Russians
F
or years Phuket was one of the most exclusive high-end destinations in the world, until, that is, mass tourism operators started reshaping the landscape. In recent years, the island has been slowly turning into a mass tourism destination with more and more Russians and Chinese arriving with package tours. The question is, can Phuket reclaim its reputation as a highquality destination?
With recent news reports of a decline in mass tourism from Russia, the coming high season could be the most appropriate time to act. Global travel agent TUI Travel has already cut the number of holidays it offers to Russians by 30 per cent, while Russian operators Tez Tour and Natali Tours have cut their offerings to major destinations, including Thailand, by 50 per cent and 20 to 25 per cent respectively. “We’re taking a cautious view for winter [in Russia]”, - Reuters quotes TUI’s chief executive Peter Long as saying.
All the companies point to the weakness of the Russian currency as the main reason for this year’s low demand. The Russian rouble has suffered a significant drop from 32 roubles/USDto 40 roubles/ usd since January 1, 2014. This, combined with other factors, has resulted in several tour companies cutting volumes - some stopping operations all together. The winter is expected to be tough for package tour operators, but for Phuket and Thailand, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. The negative trend is not expected to spread to frequent indi-
vidual travelers (FIT). And with less mass tourism, these highprofile money spenders could be persuaded to change their views on Thai vacations, if they are encouraged to do so through advertising, such as campaigns already launched by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). For nearly half of Russia (namely Siberia and Far East), Thailand is the only easily accessible destination in Asia, due to the availability of direct flights and the relatively short distance compared to other Asian destinations. High-profile clients from this part of Russia can also be targeted.
Experts suggest that the most significant drop in Russian tourists will be recorded at European ski resorts. In this sense, Phuket’s up-market hotels can present themselves as an alternative option for those who used to spend Christmas holidays in five-star Alpine resorts. The drop in mass tourism from Russia is bad news for low-end hotels. However, it might offer Phuket a chance to switch from low-income package tourism to hi-end FITs, though it is up to local businesses whether they will make the most of this new opportunity on the horizon..
Merlin Group reveals new B115 million look THE MERLIN PHUKET Group has completed refurbishment of two of its four regional resorts ahead of the high season, investing a total of B115 million to upgrade guest rooms at the Khaolak Merlin Resort as well as giving the lobby and guest rooms at the Patong Merlin Hotel a major face lift. The group sunk B70 million into redesigning guest rooms at the 236-room Khaolak Merlin with a makeover which began in September last year and is now ready to welcome guests to the newly designed 137 superior, 75 deluxe and 21 deluxe pool access rooms. The property is one of Khao
Lak’s leading retreats with a unique rainforest setting, gently cascading pools and eight acres of tropical gardens with 190 metres of direct beach access, said Merlin Phuket Group Director Mrs Nantana Wongsatayanont. “Since the resort’s opening
in 2003, Khao Lak has been very popular with honeymooners and couples. The unspoilt beaches of Phang Nga are a hit among clients returning to Thailand and wanting to experience this country’s mesmerising natural beauty. With our newly refurbished rooms,
we enhance and bring together Thailand’s rich heritage and the modern comforts that our clients request,” said Mrs Nantana. Work on revamping the 488-room Patong Merlin Hotel began in May, 2014. Refurbishment of 163 out of 325 superior rooms and new lobby was completed in September 2014. The remaining superior rooms will be upgraded during the low season in 2015 with a total investment of about B45 million, which will give the rooms a more contemporary look with flat-screen TVs and walk-in showers instead of bathtubs.

Celebrations as Phuket Int’l Airport turns 26 PHUKET INTERNATIONAL Airport (PIA) celebrated 26 years in business on October 8 with a ceremony at the airport’s X-terminal. Owned and operated by Thai Airport Ltd., PIA is now well established as a regional hub since opening on October 8, 1988. The airport has enjoyed a steady increase in business, recording a 27 per cent rise in passenger numbers and a 61 per cent increase in fights in the past year, as well as a 14 per cent rise in cargo operations. This year, the company used its annual budget to resurface the runway, upgrade
electrical systems, install ladies parking, as well as improve access for disabled visitors, including adding a slope for wheelchairs, touch screens and handicap parking spots. Future plans for the airport are for it to become one of the world’s ‘smartest’ airports under the Airports Authority of Thailand (AoT), spending at least B5,146 million over the next two years while increasing passenger capacity from the current 6.5 to 12.5 million per year and handling up to 20 fights per day with 10 new terminals and an additional 1,000 parking spots.
he People’s Republic of China is set to open a consulate in Phuket by the end of October, it was announced earlier this week. The new consulate will be located at the Royal Place condominium in Samkong, opposite Tesco Lotus. The only other Chinese consulate in southern Thailand is located in Songkla province. The future Director of the Phuket Consular Office, Mrs Wang Hui Juan, met with Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong on Monday (Oct 13) to discuss the upcoming opening of the new consulate. As well as providing assistance to the approximately one million Chinese tourists visiting Phuket annually – about one fifth of the total number of foreign visitors to the island each year – consular services will include processing of visa applications for study and travel. “For a long time, Thailand
Wang Hui Juan (second from left) and Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong (third from left), flanked by tourism officials. and China have had close relations. I am glad to have met Mrs Wang Hui Juan to continue our relationship and discuss our roles to work together,” Gov Nisit said. As well as assisting Chinese tourists in different capacities, the consulate will also issue visas for locals so they won’t have to make trips to Bangkok or Songkla.
Gov Nisit also confirmed that discussions touched on the sister city status between Phuket and Xiamen – a city in southeastern China with an urban population of over 1.8 million people – which is still being discussed. Other topics of discussion centred-around the problems experienced by Chinese tourists in Phuket, such as vehicu-
lar accidents and last-minute flight cancellations.” “I have informed them to coordinate with Chinese national airlines,” he added. “These [talks] can make our roles [in Chinese tourism] clear in order to support each other in the hopes that we will improve in order to make tourists satisfied.” he concluded.

THE BIG LIST Deplaned There are some things you don’t do on an airplane (fart, for instance). But sometimes, you have no choice. Either way, getting “deplaned” is always a possibility.
Whitney’s Tunes: Apparently, not all airline stewards are fond of Whitney Houston. In May 2013, a passenger on the American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York City forced the plane to make an emergency landing when she refused to stop singing Houston’s songs during the flight. The plane landed in Kansas City and officers had to escort her off. She was later interviewed and released, but the airline refused to fly her to New York. The B Word: Just one month before that incident (April 2013), Michael Doyle was forced off a JetBlue flight before it made it’s departure. The reason? Doyle suffers from Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes uncontrolled speech, and ended up saying the word “bomb” almost 100 times during check-in. The 19-year-old later told officers that he had the Boston Marathon (which occurred just a week before) on his mind. The airline eventually offered Doyle a free round-trip ticket on another JetBlue flight. Bye, Bye plane: Kids say the darndest things. That’s what got Kate Penland and her 19-month-old son Garren kicked-off a Continental Express flight in July 2007. Just prior to lift off, Garren kept saying “Bye, bye plane”, which annoyed and distracted an airline stewardess. “She leaned over the gentleman who was sitting next to me, and she said, ‘OK, it’s not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up’,” Penland recalled to local reporters in Atlanta. After refusing to give her son medication to put him to sleep, the pair were forced off the flight. 2Tall2Fly: Within a period of three months, two passengers were deemed too tall for their flights – though it turned out better for one. In December 2010, a 200cm tall Spirit Airlines passenger decided it was better to stand for his two and a half hour flight to Florida instead of getting kicked off. But in February 2011, a 205.7 cm tall Horizon Air passenger was unfortunately kicked-off his flight to California. Both men tried to purchase an emergency exit seat when buying their ticket but had to contend with an aisle seat because of overbooking. Stinky Airlines: In February 2010, Jazz Air – a regional airline in Canada – had kicked-off a passenger for being too smelly. Ever sensitive to customers, a spokeswoman explained that the passenger was “deplaned” but could not give specific information as to why he was let off the flight. Later, passengers told CNN.com that an American man was stared at by several passengers before the flight took off because of his strong body odor. He was left on Prince Edward Island in Canada and given a ticket to another flight.

Doctors rid teen of large facial tumour D
17-year-old Grace had been living with the facial tumour for nearly 10 years. Still, she was able to drink and eat.
octors spent four hours removing a large facial tumour from 17-year-old Grace, who had basically been living next to a big piece of herself since 2004. From a little swelling inside the mouth, to a fullfledged facial tumour the size of a rugby ball, the growth is attached to the teen’s, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, jaw. Despite its size, however, the tumour has not prevented her from being able to eat and breathe, according to a clip from TLC UK’s Body Bizarre program. “We went to local hospital and they didnt know what
it [the tumour] was. They did nothing about it,” Grace says in the clip, (which can be found at: youtube.com/ watch?v=KpHDIKaRaS4) The sheer size of the tumour prevented Grace from leaving the house for fear of what others might say or think. Still, there was hope in the name of “Mercy Ships”, a floating hospital that performs medical procedures around the world for poor or isolated people. In the fourhour procedure, doctors were able to remove the tumour with titanuium plates. After a six month recovery process, Grace will be able to receive artificial teeth in order to help her chew.
Haitian risks jail over plane seat row IT WAS DUBBED THE LEGroom wars and now a Haitian man risks up to 20 years in a US prison for losing his cool when a passenger reclined a seat on a flight from Miami to Paris. Edmond Alexandre, 60, was indicted last Thursday (October 9) in a federal court in Boston for interfering with crew members, which forced the diversion of the August 27 flight to the northeastern city. About two hours into American Airlines flight 62 from Miami to Paris, Alexandre allegedly argued with the passenger in front, who wanted to recline in the cramped confines of economy class. When a crew member intervened, Alexandre was accused of chasing the at-

Man smears tar on self to not be seen IF YOU PLAN TO ROB a gas station, perhaps it would be best to actually have a better plan than Joshue Holoman. Holoman was on the roof of a closed gas station when police found him.. When they asked Holoman, who was covered in tar, what he was doing he told cops that he was visiting family. The 30-year-old then tried to convince the officers that he was a repairman who needed to do some maintenance at 3am on a Tuesday (October 7) because he heard the air conditioning system make noise. In the end, Holoman confessed that he had smeared tar on himself and had been sleeping on the roof. Police charged him with attempted burglary and criminal mischief because they found a prying tool with him. thephuketnews

Phuket, Phang Nga tourism boss shares thoughts on year ahead Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th
After the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, I spent three to four years promoting Thailand’s tourism by creating regional and international events for the Andaman travel trade
W
hen you think about Phuket’s tourism, you will indeed think of its beautiful beaches, bars, restaurants and all the activities that help generate Phuket’s economy. Anoma Vongyai, 44, a Phuket native, has been the Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office in Phuket (which also has jurisdiction over Phang Nga province) since March 2014. She has a Master’s degree in Tourism from the James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. Here, Ms Anoma tells her story: “The TAT is not a business that takes advantage or gets benefits from anyone – we purely support tourism. My role as a Thai government officer gave me more pleasure than a job in the private sector would, so I knew TAT would be the perfect choice for me. “After I graduated, I was offered the position of marketing officer for TAT in Phuket. The government offered their staff a bursary to study in Australia, so I was still able to work for TAT in Thailand while I studied abroad. I was then promoted to Assistant Director. “I have been unfortunate enough to come face-to-face with two tsunamis in my life so far. “After the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, I spent three to four years promoting Thailand’s tourism by creating regional and international events for the Andaman travel trade as well as promoting a positive image of Thailand. For example, how to prepare for another natural disaster in the future. “The challenge of building Thailand’s
economy has been such an enriching experience as we all lost hope after the first year, but we have come so far. “In 2009, I moved to be TAT Tokyo Assistant Director in Japan. And in 2011, once again I was faced with another tsunami. We had to work from home and our jobs kind of came to a halt as money had to be spent on re-building the economy and helping citizens. “Then I went back to Thailand to work for the European and Middle Eastern markets. It was then that I decided
to return to TAT in March this year, to take on the role of Director for the Phuket office. “There is a big question whether tourism can be maintained. The businesses exist because of tourism, so if tourism takes a turn for the worse, then all businesses will be affected. “At this stage we decided to focus more on quality rather than the quantity of tourists. If a small number of tourists come in, but spend a lot of money, then it is better than tourists who come in and hardly spend anything. “We cannot deny that our main tourists are from China and it is our responsibility to learn how to communicate with them and teach them the Thai culture and information on Thailand. TAT office in China is currently helping us to promote and communicate better with them. “In Phuket, I would like to promote our agricultural community, because the locals still work in this field. If we can improve agricultural tourism, I think we can keep our tourists here for a long time. “In 2015, we will introduce and promote the unique selling points in each community by providing information booklets and hosting more events. “Baan Bang Rong’s draw-card is its popular local fisheries and farmers; Phuket Town for its local culture and heritage city; Yao Island for its Muslim community and Koh Sireh for the unique sea gypsy culture. Luckily for Phuket, we have lots of different selling points. Our multicultural mixes of both Thai and Chinese food would leave any food fanatic spoilt for choice. For example, Loba (pork with spicy ingredients), O-Eaw (white jelly), and fresh homemade local desserts are popular in Kathu. “Food festivals could be improved by presenting an array of foods representative of different areas in Phuket, which would be great for tourists. “TAT is not responsible for the complaints received from tourists. Our job is to promote tourism only. I have received a lot of complaints from tourists, but we have to pass them on to the Ministry of Tourism and Sport office in Phuket. Nevertheless, the letters educate us on anything negative that we could possibly improve on.” For any tourist information or events that you would like to see in Phuket, please contact us directly at our office near Queen’s park in Phuket Town. thephuketnews

Raw vegan enchiladas: raw tortillas made from flax seed and coconut meat, wrapped with marinated kale, topped with a mango salsa.
MIND, BODY AND SOUL: The courses emphasise on healthy meditation, dining and mental exercises.
Rejuvinate with JW Marriott’s holistic wellness programme Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter4@classactmedia.co.th
J
W Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa has gone to new levels with its new wellness programme, offering a relaxing, pampering retreat that is ideal for both guests and locals alike. The meditation programme opens up the opportunity to free your mind from any worries and distractions and allow your body to truly unwind.
Meditation classes are led by professional instructors, such as healing energy guru, Nikorn Banjerdlert, and Pat Thummanond – “the only certified Cranio-Sacral Therapist available in Thailand”. The classes focus on the brain and how the nervous system controls each movement in the body. I attended the retreat one weekend and was, admittedly, slightly anxious since I had no idea what the classes would involve or what I would be expected to do. But, I soon relaxed and fell into a
calm state of mind. We began by laying down on the floor and were told to close our eyes and listen to the noises around us. Eyes closed, we had to rely on our other four senses. It suddenly became clear how important it was for us to pause, take a moment and just relax. So, I concentrated on the sound of the waves on Mai Khao Beach. The instructors explained how meditation was a strong method to allow our bodies to switch off, slow down and take a break. They said it would help us ignore and avoid pain, observe with other senses and feel comfortable. We were taught how to use the “Feldenkrais” method, which involved a slow moving meditation with the purpose of focusing on the brain first, rather than the muscles. Mandy Kealy, a Feldenkrais practitioner said, “If in doubt, just ask yourself: ‘am I breathing?’ and then just let your body do its natural work. You’ll move more easily. “Verbal workshops explore self-awareness, with the aim being how to expand your choices in how you respond in life. As Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-84) once said, if you know what you’re doing, you can do what you want,” she added. Afterwards, we had lunch at the Ginja Taste Restaurant, where a selection of
raw food was presented to us by the Raw Master Chef, Mukesh. The main ingredients were coconut and vegan protein, all providing healthy nutrients for the body. To finish off the day, we headed for some R&R at The Mandara Spa, the final leg of the wellness programme. Set in 27 acres of lush tropical gardens, with natural swimming pools, freshwater ponds and natural preserved coastal wetlands, the spa offered total seclusion and tranquillity overlooking the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea. It felt very serene and peaceful, and was the perfect environment for relaxing and unwinding.
Health Ministry: No to raw eggs
T
he Ministry of Public Health has recommended that everyone should consume eggs for health benefits. T he eggs, however, should be fully cooked before consumption, as eating raw eggs could potentially lead to health problems. According to Public Health Minister Dr Rajata Rajatanavin, an egg has 80 kilo calories, seven grams of protein and vitamin B as well as other essential minerals. Dr Rajata advises against eating raw eggs as they could be contaminated with microorganisms, which can be harmful to their health.
Besides, raw egg whites (albumen) could prevent the absorption of biotin. He added that eggs are good for people of all age groups. Parents may feed a baby, as young as 6 months, a mashed egg yolk mixed with rice.
Children of school age can eat one egg a day, while adults are advised to eat 3-5 eggs per week. For people with high cholesterol, the amount of consumption should be limited to 1-2 eggs per week. NNT thephuketnews

Rhodes to Fit
Salesman teams up with RPM’s Hayden Rhodes to reclaim his waist JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
M
eet Andrew “Andy” Joyce. Sales extraordinnaire, husband, father, and former pro golfer and swimmer. When Andy first arrived to Thailand in 2009, he was a svelt 87kg. During his time in the King-
Andy before his training regiment
dom, the Brit at one point maxed-out at 120kg thanks to what he says was just “too much of the good life”. After a series of triathlons and sporadic training regiments, Andy was able to slim down to 105kg, where he has more-or-less remained for the last two years. With the help of Hayden Rhodes, the RPM Health Club Manager, Andy plans to tackle the remaining 20 kg in a 90-day challenge. Andy’s goal is, by Christmas, to reach a level of fitness and weight that he is not only comfortable with but can also maintain. “One of the things you mentioned that you’d like to work on is getting really honest about the health of your body and being strong and fit for life and the life of your daughter. You also touched on getting honest about your relationship to food”, Rhodes told Andy in an email shortly before they started. “In this approach, we will explore compulsions as a gift. Approaching them with curiosity. Do you know what is amazing about curiosity? There is no judgement in it,” Rhodes wrote. Rhodes is known the world-over as a fitness guru who comes from a different perspective and trains his clients to look at things with curiosity.
The old adage of cardiovascular exercises (i.e. running and cycling) to lose weight is, according to Hayden, just one very small piece of the puzzle. Instead, Hayden has Andy doing strength circuits with short but intense bursts of weight lifting. “I already feel a lot stronger,” Andy says, “With personal trainers in the past, I had a lot of aches and pains. I could barely walk the next day. With Hayden, I have all the ‘good pain’ but am still able to function and make great stride in my fitness.” In addition to his participation in Sober for October (no drinking for one month), Andy has also overhauled his nutrition. With a wife that cooks healthy meals for dinner, Andy’s prob-
lem was during breakfast where he would eat anything in sight in the morning madness of dropping off his kids at school and going to work. “Hayden makes you do a pie chart with percentages of what you should eat. I could have all this delicious stuff in the morning and it’s actually healthy for me, like smoked salmon, poached eggs, avocado,” he says. The Phuket News will be following Andy’s progress as Rhodes helps him slim down just in time for the holidays. So far, Andy remains positive about his progress and goals. “With [Hayden] this is more about regulating a lifestyle so you still get the results you want but still have fun,” Andy says.
BREAKFAST NOOK
Andy’s diet places special emphasis on breakfast. While dinner meals are loaded with healthy options, the “most important meal of the day” has fallen by the wayside for this Brit. As Andy tackles his diet and waistline, he gives us a peek at his favourite breakfast meals. This week, it includes a serving of honeydew melon, slices of Cheddar cheese and smoked salmon (protein, B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium and selenium). Everything in moderation as the salmon does contain above-average levels of sodium.

I
have been riding my scooter around the island over the last couple of days and everything looks crystal-clear after the rain. We are lucky to live in a picturesque island, surrounded by beauty, and I thought to celebrate our good fortunes by sharing eka pada rajakaptonasana, or “the mermaid pose”. It is a primal reaction to store stress, trauma, fear and anxiety in the hips. These bottled up feelings create tight hips. Lets unbottle this built-up emotional stress and reap the many benefits below: Strengthens the core and pelvic floor Stretches the lower back, hip flexors and quad muscles Opens chest and shoulders Lengthens the spine Helps with urinary disorder Increases hip flexibility Improves posture, align@thephuketnews
Follow these steps to practise this asana: Start sitting on the floor with your legs out front, roll onto your right hip and bring your right knee to the front, your right heel is placed about a fist width in front of your right thigh. Take the left leg back straight. The front of the left thigh, the top of the knee and the top of the left foot should touch the floor. If you are a beginner and feel tight in the hips, place a pillow under your right sitting bone to help with the balance and placement of this posture (see photo one) Once your legs are in place, lift and elongate through the torso, roll your shoulder blades down the back and keep your torso upright. Reach back with your left hand and hold your left ankle as you pull it towards the bottom. As you pull your heel closer to your bottom catch the left foot into the crease of your left elbow. Raise the right arm above the head on an inhale and on the exhale bend the elbow
placing your right hand between your shoulder blades. Sink down through the sitting bones and rise through the crown of the head as you bring the left hand and the right hand to met behind the back of the head. (If you are beginner see photo one for the hand alternative) Elongate and open the chest and the right elbow on each inhalation and sink and solidify the hips and bottom on the exhale. (see photo two) Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat on the left side. The qualities of the mermaid will empower you to navigate the challenges of life with grace. Happy stretching Metta, Kim oxo

Reps from top universities to converge in Phuket on Nov 6
R
ecruiters and admissions representatives from more than 25 of the world’s top universities, including NCAA schools, will be in Phuket on November 6 for British International School Phuket’s (BISP) University Fair “It has been 12 months in preparation but finally after long hours, countless emails and face to face meetings at conferences and university fairs in Bangkok, Singapore and the US, everything is falling in place,” remarked Careers Counsellor Martyn Rowlands. The fair will take place 1-4pm during Student Development Week, where BISP students will join students from the 24-plus schools attending the BISP football tourna-
ment the next day to take part and meet university representatives as well as attend specialist workshops on pursuing higher learning and career paths in Australia, UK, America and Europe. “I have attempted to create a balance of universities to suit all needs and interests. We have some of the academic elite universities who consistently place in the top 20 in the Times HE World Rankings overall or in their specialist subject areas,” explained Mr Rowlands. The fair will also feature sporting powerhouses in the form of NCAA Division I and II schools from the USA who are happy to answer any questions regarding athletic scholarships and balancing life as an athlete and a student.
“We will also have very prestigious specialist schools in the Arts, Fashion and Hospitality such as The Glasgow School of Art, Raffles in Bangkok and Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland. “We hope that the BISP University Fair will become a long standing annual event that will continue to grow and be enjoyed by all,” concluded Mr Rowlands.

P
hilipp Graf von Hardenberg, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Phuket International Academy, and President and CEO of Thanyapura, has formally appointed a new director of the prestigious academic institution on the north of Phuket. “It is with great pleasure that, on behalf of the Chair of the PIA Board, Khun Kanittha Suksawaschon, the PIA School Board has approved the appointment of Mr Julian Whiteley as the Chief Executive of Phuket International Academy. Julian will also be a member of the PIA Board and the Director of Education for Thanyapura,” said Mr von Hardenberg In his capacity as Chief Executive of PIA, Julian will have overall responsibility to the Board, especially for the strategic development of the school. He will work closely with Riki Teteina, who as head will have day-to-day responsibility for the operations of the school, Peter O’Sullivan in his capacity as the Primary Principal and the school Business Manager, Daniel Magie, the Secondary Principal and Krysten Fort-Catanese, the Director of Social Emotional Learning & Mindfulness. “The members of the PIA School Board are very happy with the progress the school has made over recent years under their leadership,” added Mr. Graf von Hardenberg. @thephuketnews
STEPPING UP: Chief Executive Julian Whiteley will oversee PIA’s strategic development. Julian has worked in a variety of schools in Europe, South America and Asia. Most recently, and significantly, he was the head and CEO of the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) Singapore, which is widely acknowledged as being amongst the top ten international schools in the world. During his nine years at UWCSEA the school doubled in size to become the largest international school in the world with 5,300 students. He obtained his teaching qualification at Cambridge University and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Nottingham University. In addition to his extensive experience leading schools, he has served on the Board of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools, was a member of the International Baccalaureate Heads Council and the United World Colleges Council. Julian is highly regarded in the
world of international education and PIA is delighted that it has been able to attract someone of his quality to join the school’s leadership team. Julian has committed his long-term future to PIA and Thanyapura. He will start work at the school at the beginning of the second half of term on Monday October 27. “I am excited at the opportunity to work at Phuket International Academy. I have known of the school for some time and am totally aligned with the school’s mission and philosophy of education. I am very much looking forward to working with such high quality staff, engaged students and supportive parents,” said Mr. Whiteley. The leadership team of Thanyapura is very proud to appoint Julian as Director of Education for Thanyapura. Thanyapura, a 23-hectare luxury sports, health and lifestyle resort in Phuket, Thailand, places much importance
on high quality training, coaching and education as an integral part of fulfilling its promise to its customers – ‘Optimize your potential’. “Such has been the school’s success, I am proud to announce that the UWC (United World College) International Board has considered PIA’s application to become the UWC in Thailand. “To quote from the letter we received from Keith Clark, the Executive Director of UWC, in September: ‘On the basis of its discussion, the board agreed to grant the proposal to develop a UWC school or college in Phuket the status of Initial Notification…’ It is our aspiration to secure full approval to become a UWC within the next 18 months,” said Mr. Graf von Hardenberg. For more information, e-mail: kim. minnaar@pia.ac.th or visit www. phuketinternationalacademy.com
According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), the number of people out of work in Thailand as of last month reached over 300,000, or about 0.8 per cent of the entire population; 14.76% higher year-on-year. Of these, 103,0 0 0 (34%) are university degree holders, 138,000 (46%) holding secondary education certificates, 50,000 (16%) completed only primary school education, and 20,000 (6.6%) with no education at all. According to the MD of Jobs DB (Thailand) Ms Noppawan Chulakanit, graduates in social studies, humanities, and other arts-related fields face the highest risk of unemployment, while those who have a degree in communications, political science, and education also face stiff job competition.
Thailand needs to boost language skills for skilled workers
Thai workers advised to take foreign language classes before the integration of Asean countries next year. The Ministry of Labor fears Thailand would lose a competitive advantage to the Philippines where people are more fluent in English. Permanent Secretary for Labor Nakorn SilpaA rcha reiterated the importance of a second language and cultural awareness as they will enable Thai workers to work well with their foreign colleagues. He added the employment of Filipino nationals could mean fewer management level jobs for Thais due to their superior English skills.
Students should participate in educational reform
A veteran activist of the National Reform Council is suggesting the participation of students in the reform of Thailand’s education system. Former Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Mechai Viravaidya plans to propose the setting up of a student council that will represent students from across Thailand. He added that the new council will be tasked with providing consultation to the NRC in completing the education reform. NNT

Modeled after the same stylish, contemporary look and feel as the brand’s worldwide locations, Nikki Beach Phuket features plush, all-white sun beds, chic textiles, and trademark teepees located throughout the property. The oceanfront beach club and restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining options. I recently attended the famous ‘Amazing Sunday Brunch’, which runs every Sunday from 11am, and it was a particularly special Sunday as the restaurant was decorated with pink balloons and table settings to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. As soon as I walked in, I was treated like royalty. The extensive buffet laid out in the centre of the restaurant, offered an array of dishes featuring signa-
ture tastes and spices, representative of the various countries in which Nikki Beach operates: salads, sushi rolls, seafood entrées, slow-roasted freerange rotisserie chicken and carving stations, omelettes, and so much more. The head chef brought out specially prepared courses and signature cocktails for us to sample and enjoy. We began with two juicy Bloody Marys, accompanied by a tray of delicious starters; including a leafy salad, a selection of sushi rolls and oysters, parma ham on crusty bread, and a mini Greek salad. It’s all simple and delicate, yet a perfect way to build one’s appetite and get those taste buds flowing. Now, the main course was my favourite part. Beautifully presented with mouth-watering flavours, the chef presented us a tray of treats: herb and thyme roast chicken thighs, creamy and moreish mini cheese macaroni cups, chicken burritos, heavenly tender wagyu beef strips, perfectly cooked to your desire and accompanied by a dash of mustard on the side, giving it a smoky flavoursome edge. And finally, scrumptious meatballs that came in a thick home-made tomato sauce, with a hint of chilli... mamma mia! After complementing our main course with a few more drinks, the chef finally presented us with a selection of enticing desserts. The buffet itself offered various flavours of ice creams, sorbets, cakes and cup-cakes. Both the lime and vanilla flavoured ice cream were delightful, not too sweet or soft. And the cup-cakes were cutely wrapped and yummy inside.
After lunch, we were taken to one of the poolside plush beds, where we got to soak in the heavenly sunset with a few more cocktails. There was a great blend of chill-out and upbeat music played throughout the day, with Nikki’s house DJ behind the decks. The evening concluded with one of its famous fire shows, the perfect way to finish an amazing Sunday. Overall, Nikki’s service is secondto-none, the quality of the food is consistent, the staff are attentive and well trained to ensure your experience is memorable and relaxing. They are a multilingual team and always there to greet you with a friendly smile. Nikki Beach deserves its place as one of the top-end beach clubs and restaurants in the world and the Phuket branch is definitely worth checking out. Nikki Beach Phuket is located at 62/11 Moo 6 Cherng Talay. It is is open from 11am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 1am Friday and Saturday. Tel: 076-681161. Toasted on Koh Tao: Part 1 Sophie Gibson editor@classactmedia.co.th
K
ilos of cheese, crushed dreams, and other blasé things like the Thai mafia. That’s what I wanted to call this article. Let me explain why. The mediumlength version… All of that bologna about discovering yourself when you travel? Well there’s more than a nugget of real meat in it. You have to really look for them, but sometimes those little fleshy specks just scream for recognition. Off the top of my head, I’d say there are three main things that are outstandingly apparent in the recent months, two of which I was already pretty convinced, but I now have confirmation that wherever, doing whatever, with whoever, they still hold infallible. One of those is that I cannot keep a sound mind without staying on the health and fitness bandwagon. Several failed attempts at proclaimed “health benders” and “detoxes” amidst the slippery slope of alcohol (thus automatically sliding into poor eating habits and little to no exercise) and finally one very successful one confirms my suspicious that I thrive when sweat and veggies are part of my daily shenanigans. I am not immune to the slugging effects of hangovers and fried foods. Glad to know I won’t let myself completely slip away, even in the most #yolo (You Only Live Once, for you older crowds) of times. The second self-discovery is that I really love food. Not much of an epiphany, but it has become increasingly apparent that my life revolves around food. Just as it should, wouldn’t changed a thing. I’m going to go ahead and extrapolate a little cause and effect between these two guys…just a theory… Golly I could talk about food and fitness all day. On to the point of this post; now the third, this one was a little more interesting. And led to some very interesting experiences in Thailand. Not without plenty of foreshadowing either, but this trip somehow unleashed my entrepreneurial side and a burning desire to start a business. While I’ve always toyed with the idea, I’ve heard far too many tales of failure and loss. However, this particular startup was temporary and just

But then of course, by some strange miracle we were not impulsive, and actually thought things through. It wasn’t that simple, but after some firsthand research, we figured out the simpler the better, and a food stand that has to entertain a giant deep fryer, keep a multitude of ingredients cold and fresh and another multitude of sauces piping hot, was a little above our heads and budgets—especially with our plans of only keeping this up for about a month just to give it a go. So we fell back on another classic: the grilled cheese sandwich. Also known by many as the beloved “toasties”. Bread, cheese, butter, a little grill to

espite a big match against Siam Navy looming on October 12, Phuket FC coaches found time last week to lead 40 kids through a football clinic at Republic Phuket in Chalong. About 40 kids from the Moklen sea gypsy village in Rawai could be seen running around the artificial grass field at the local club’s facilities, practicing their footwork. “There’s about 30 kids here who probably have never seen artificial grass before. Everyday they play in the mud and the puddles so for them to come see and experience this, hopefully it will motivate them to play more football and get into the Phuket FC academy,” said Richie Dell, a member of the Mushy Peas, a Phuket FC supporter’s club that helped organise the event with team officials. The group has been busy the last few months as they gave away sports equipment to the village last month and had previously coordinated a football clinic for underprivileged Myanmar children. “The Mushy Peas will continue to do

Is World War Water looming? Contemplating conflict over one of earth’s most abundant resources THE GLOBAL SCALE Daria Manina life@novostiphuketa.com
S
hortcomings in water management hinder development progress throughout much of the world, indicates a Unesco report: ‘Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risk’ Aside from urging better planning of distribution of the world’s most valuable resource, and reminding us that a billion people on the planet still do not have access to it, the report raises another interesting debate: Will there be a war on the planet over water? According to the report, by midcentury, the consumption of fresh water in the agricultural sector will increase by another 20 per cent. This is related to the increased need for water production. Much of it goes to irrigate crops. For example, about 500 litres are required to obtain one kilo of wheat. Another key factor in the equation is climate change, explains co-chairman of the Russian environmental group Ecozashita (Ecodefesa) Vladimir Sliviak. “Climate change is an imbalance, a natural chaos... In areas that already

Conversely, regions suffering from water shortage will get even less.” However, not all experts agree that temperature fluctuations will have such an impact on certain regions. Above all, the problem is not the shortage of liquid as such, says ecologist Alexander Bogoliubov. “There are places on Earth where there is water at a certain depth (aquifers) .. The issue is that some countries can not afford to dig wells a mile deep to access this water.” Several countries are fully or partially in extremely arid territories, including Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and not to mention vast parts of China, Russia, Australia, the US and even South America. But the problem affecting much of the free world can be solved, stress

he Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis) is a small plump bird (me a s u r i n g a b out 18cms from head to tail) with, as the name suggests, a broad mouth. There are seven species of Broadbill found in Thailand, and 14 species worldwide. The female Green Broad-
bill is similar to the male but without the black patch behind the ear or the black bars on the wing. With a slightly duller green colour, the bird’s primary diet is fruit. Their habitat is evergreen forest below 800m which, in Thailand, has shrunk significantly in recent years. The Red Data Status is ‘near threatened’. Like all Broadbills, their nests are quite long and woven and, hang from a branch rather than in the cleft of branches.

many experts. The simplest and most rational approach is to improve distribution management. Some ecologists have proposed ways in which more water-wealthy countries can contribute. For example, countries like Brazil could be a kind of ‘donor’, while Russia might consider making water a source of income, similar to oil or gas. The general director of the Center for Water Mains Testing, Yuri Gontchar shares his considerations. “Russian businessmen are currently studying the construction of water pipelines from the Caucasus region ... to transport water to Southern Europe and Africa. This makes sense and merits more study as a rational use of resources and redistribution, without the same consequences as diverting rivers or pumping water from rivers and lakes to other areas.” The practice of changing the course
BREAKING A SWEAT: Drinking water collected by hand in Neot Mordechai, Israel, circa 1947. of rivers is very popular now. China’s government has spent tens of billions of dollars in its river-course changing efforts in order to supply the north of the country. But of course, environmentalists believe that such a course of action will not be without consequences. These problems of water supply and distribution exert considerable influences on the economy of countries. Water scarcity can lead to increased emigration fom poorer countries and, in the case of rich countries, an increased dependency on regions with large reserves of water resources. Social instability is bound to lead to the emergence of conflicts, and such struggle for access to the life-enabling resource, may even result in armed opposition.

Samsung making Wi-Fi faster
Tech megac ompa ny Samsung is reportedly developing Wi-Fi connections that work five times faster than the current max speeds of today’s internet, according to Mashable. Today ’s ma x i mu m internet speed reaches 866 megabits per second, or 108mb per second. Samsung says they are working on speeds that reach 4.6 gigabits per second, 575mb per second (60GHz of Wi-Fi) – a 1gb file would take two second to transfer at those speeds. “Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60 GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology,” said Kim Chang Yong, head of Samsung’s researchand-development center, adding that it could be available in 2015.

Routers may be ugly, but that doesn’t mean you should hide them behind the TV cabinet. If you want the best signal, you’ll need it out in the open, free of any walls and obstructions. Point the antennas vertically, and elevate the router if you can (one reader found that his attic was the perfect spot). Lastly, make sure it’s in the center of your house, so you have
the best coverage possible throughout your home.
3. Find the right wireless channel
If you have neighbors, their routers may be interfering with yours and causing the signal to degrade. Wireless routers can operate on a number of different channels, and you want yours on a channel with as little interference as possible. Use a tool like Wi-Fi Stumbler or Wi-Fi Analyzer to find the perfect channel in your house.
4. Get rid of interference from other appliances Other routers aren’t the only thing that can cause interference. Cordless phones, microwaves, and other appliances can muck with your signal as well. Buying a dual band router can help with this, but you can also buy cordless phones on other bands too. If you don’t want to buy new hardware, you can always try moving your router further away from interfering appliances, too.
5. Thwart Wi-Fi thieves with better security Even if your router has a password, it can be really easy to hack. There are easy ways to find out if someone is stealing your Wi-Fi, but the best thing to do is just lock them out with better security. Using a WPA password is absolutely essential, the older standard WEP can be hacked in minutes.
Unveiling the D: Tesla’s new electric car for bad weather includes (fast) four-wheel drive
E
lectric car giant Tesla last week unveiled a new two-engine vehicle designed to perform in bad weather, featuring four-wheel drive and anti-collision technology. Performance in inclement conditions was considered one of the weak spots of Tesla’s existing models and with the new car, the company is trying to win over drivers in regions where the weather is not the nearly year-round sunshine that its California base enjoys. Founder Elon Musk said the new version of the Model S will feature the letter D for dual motor, one of which will be in the front and one in the back of the vehicle. Musk unveiled the new car at an event at Hawthorne airport in Los Angeles where Tesla has a design studio and engineering lab. The new car will come in three versions: 60D, 85D and the top of the line P85D,
with progressively higher engine power and speed. The car’s anti-collision features include forward-looking radar and it can also read speed-limit signs to adjust the car’s speed to comply. The top of the line model will be able to reach 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour, with acceleration that goes from zero to 60 mph (100 km) in 3.2 seconds, he said. That top-line new version will
increase range by about 16 km over the current version, to about 470 km. The price will start at about US$120,000 (B3.8 million). Musk said having two engines will not slow the car down. “You can dynamically shift the power from rear to front and constantly be at the optimal efficiency of both motors, so we actually overcome the penalty of the increased mass,” Musk said. IN BRIEF New Ghostbusters a total reboot
Operation: snooze AUTOMATA
FILM REVIEW J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
Banderas is brilliant as a man who is fed up with his predicament despite playing by the rules..... What ruined the film was everything else.
S
omeone should have told me to bring a blanket and a pillow. Automata might as well have been a mild form of valium for how boring the middle of the film became. The truth is, there was excitement when I purchased my ticket – the trailer had sold me a futuristic robot film that was a cross between I, Robot and Her. Instead we got Antonio Banderas giving in a solid performance in a film that lacked simple foundational story elements that would have pulled me from my slumber. Automata is Spanish director Gabe Ibáñez’s second feature film, after toiling for years in a digital production house working on short films. His first feature, Hierro, was a solid effort with emotional depth and great camera work. While Automata showcases more of Ibanez’s visual prowess – some shots look flatout beautiful – the story is simply not enough. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which only a few million humans live. These people live in a city that is almost entirely built by robots. These machines have two cognitive protocols ingrained into them: 1) do not harm humans, and 2) do not repair yourself or other robots. Jacq Vaucan (Antonio Banderas) is an insurance agent for the ROC robotics corporation and discovers that some robots have been able to violate the second protocol. From there, the company goes after him to prevent the news from getting out since it could have huge implication on the future of humanity.

Director Paul Feig has confirmed that the much-discussed Ghostbusters film will, in fact, be a reboot with an all-female cast. “I wanted to come into our world where there’s talk of ghosts but they’re not really credible, and so what would happen in our world if this happened today… Everything is up for grabs right now,” he said, adding that the new film will not acknowledge the originals. Kate Dippold, who wrote the femaledriven comedy film The Heat, will cowrite the new Ghostbusters with Feig.
Because he’s (Lego) Batman!
Warner Bros. Studios has noticed all the attention behind the Batman character in The Lego Movie and have put a spin-off film into motion. The studio is focusing on releasing a “Lego Batman” film for the 2017 summer season in lieu of a direct Lego Movie sequel. The project would include Will Arnett, who provided the character’s voice in the first film. The Batman spin-off pushes the sequel into post-2017 territory, though the studios still plan to release Ninjago (based off the popular animated series) in September 2016.
Thai film fund a first for ASEAN
Again, Banderas is brilliant in the film as a man who is fed up with his predicament despite playing by the rules. He easily carries Automata with an emotional depth that teeters on madness and desperation. One particular scene stands out, when he is in the desert with a chocolate bar. What ruined the film was everything else. It began as an interesting look into the applications of robots into our everyday lives (from domestic to even sexual). Eventually, the film starts to get seemingly interesting, only for it to fall flat. Looking back, the film’s downfall can be traced back to one person: Melanie Griffith. As Dr. Dupre, we are supposed to buy Griffith as a genius engineer of robots who went rogue and now works in clandestine fashion. But her teenie-girl, trying-too-hardto-be-sexy voice betrays any semblance to her character. It immediately took me out of the film and is offensive to the work Banderas had done just before in keeping the audience interested and engaged. In that same vein, Dylan McDermott’s performance was too tacky of a portrayal of a hotheaded cop (You don’t always have to yell and brood, Dylan!). Automata is another tale of great expectations that became an even greater let down. If there’s anything we learned here it’s that Banderas’ acting chops are solid, his bald head is Bruce Willis-esque, and trailer editors have got to start making their own features.
A new film fund, supported by two Bangkok-based film services companies, will look to help support feature film projects shot in Thailand. The Open Sea Fun is the region’s first film fund and brings together White Light post production house and VS Service. The fund will look to support two projects a year: VS Service will provide a full camera, lighting and grup package while White Light will offer a colour grading and DCP package. Deadline for submissions is November 2014 for projects to be completed in 2015.

Noel Gallagher announces solo album for 2015
N
oel Gallagher, part of the charttopping Oasis group with brother Liam until their acrimonious 2009 split, announced last Monday (October 13) he would release a new solo album in March. The album, Chasing Yesterday, will be his third solo effort after The Dreams We Have as Children in 2009 and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in 2011. The British pop bad boy, who was the main songwriter and guitarist for Oasis, also announced a European tour in March 2015. The announcement of the new album is likely to further dampen hopes of any Oasis reunion. Considered a pillar of the Britpop movement, Oasis was a huge success in the 1990s and sold some 50 million records. But fighting between the brothers plagued the band, which broke up in August 2009 after a violent row moments before the band was due on stage in Paris. AFP

W
ednesdays have just got a little bit brighter. Internationally-renowned DJ group, GlowintheDark, are set to light Patong in a neon haze when they perform on October 29 at Seduction Nightclub and Disco on Bangla Road. The Dutch duo of Albert Harvey and Kevin Ramos have dropped beats all over the world and performed infront of millions of fans, including Danube
Island Festival, Dirty Dutch, and the Winter Music Conference in addition to being the former resident DJs at the world-famous Pacha and Blue Marlin clubs in Belize. The group has also worked with legendary DJ David Guetta. Alvaro, Chuckie, and LMFAO in addition to hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco. “It’s going to be something very different, something new, something exciting to bring to the island once again,” said Kitty Teppo, one of the managers
at Seduction. The event will help kick off Seduction’s new Wednesday events, dubbed ‘Glow’, which will be a UV flourescent party with luminous jellyfish suspended from the ceiling, neon lights everywhere. Guests are encouraged to wear “funky” colours and body paint. GlowintheDark takes place October 29 at Seduction Nightclub and Disco on Patong’s Bangla Road at 10pm. Glow Wednesdays begin November 5.
Penelope Cruz: Esquire’s sexiest woman
A
merican lifestyle magazine Esquire recently named Spanish actress and model Penelope Cruz as 2014’s “Sexiest Woman Alive”. The 40-year-old is the 11th woman to be given the title by Esquire, as previous honorees included Halle Barry, South Africa’s Charlize Theron, and 2013 winner Scarlett Johansson. “I had an attraction to drama. Most of us have that, especially if you are an artist -- you feel like you are tempted to explore the darkness. I could not be less interested now. For me, the most attractive, charming, cool, fun, interesting thing – how could I call it? A plan,” she told the magazine. In a lengthy interview, the actress
says she doesn’t feel like the sexiest woman alive, instead she “feels like a mother who doesn’t get enough sleep...”.

Andrezinho carries Phuket past Navy FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
T
he Ronins controlled possession for much of Sunday night’s (October 12) game against previous 3rd place team Siam Navy before Andres “Andrezinho” Lopes put one in the back of the net to give Phuket a 1-0 victory. “I’m very happy with my players. We worked very hard in this game and also in the
week. I’m happy to score winning goal” Andrezinho told The Phuket News TV after the match. Phuket FC delivered a solid performance in front of a few thousand fans at Surakul Stadium and with the three points the team jumps to 12th place (40 points) on the Yahama League-1 table – two spots clear of the relegation zone (15th to 18th place teams are relegated to Thai Division 2 league next season). Lopes’ 63rd minute strike put the team up ahead for
good and was the culmination of several offensive chances from a surprisngly aggressive Phuket squad. Despite his goal, Lopes says the team still has work to do. “We have to pay more attention in the game, we have to score more,” he says. Head Coach Reuther Moreira chose to go with veteran Ney Fabiano and striker Kenal Jagdeosingh up top, which galvanised the team’s attack and kept Siam Navy goalkeeper Chinnakorn Deesai on his toes with shots from
both angles. Siam Navy dropped to 4th place (53 points) on the standings, one out of the promotional spots (1st to 3rd enter the Thai Premier League next season). This Sunday (October 19), Phuket FC go on the road to play Roi Et United (13th place, 38 points), 4pm kick off. The Ronins previously defeated Roi Et United on June 7 at Surakul Stadium with a 2-1 scoreline. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket FC.

PHUKET’S OWN KIRANEE Narabal will be one of over 50,000 runners to tackle the biggest marathon in the world – the TCS New York City Marathon – on November 2. Since the New York City event is one of the big six World Marathon Majors (which includes the Boston, Chicago, Berlin, London and Tokyo marathons), a lottery takes place to choose out of a pool of applicants. After several years of attempting to enter, Narabal was informed back in July of her selection
Kiranee Narabal will be one of 50,000 runners in NYC. to take part in the prestigious marathon. “It’s once in a lifetime event since I’m not going
back to do it in the next few years,” she told The Phuket News. “ I love that feeling of running in a place you don’t know, you know no one and you become no one. I try to experience and explore anything.” Weather is a slight concern, she says, since the American coastal city is experiencing unseasonally colder temperatures than in past years. Still, Narabal believes that training in the Phuket sun has prepared her well. “People say it’s easier to train in the heat and run in the cold. We are arriving many days before and will need to train in the cold to get the body use to it. What’s good for me is I never have cramps. I don’t know, it’s just my luck,” Narabal says. While she understands that expenses are high, Narabal says she hopes that her trip could inspire other athletes to take a chance at running any of the World Marathon Majors. “This is something I would like to encourage people to do. If you want to be a part of a world classs event, just have to get yourself ready. It’s a once in a lifetime experience,” she says. thephuketnews

Unique twists to Phuket night run RUNNING

ost running events take place in the wee hours of the morning with serious athletes pumping their chests after the finish line. Almost the exact opposite is expected to take place at the Phuket International Night Run on November 1 as organisers emphasise the uniqueness of running through the brightly-lit streets of Phuket Old Town. The event, which will include an 11.2 km minimarathon and a 5.5 km fun run, will start at Saphan Hin Stadium through to Phuket Old Town and back (from 10pm to midnight). Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, one of the organisers of the event and a runner himself, told The Phuket News that the Phuket International Night Run is simply a unique way to get more tourists and local residents to check out the town which is often neglected for the nightlife near the island’s beaches. “People want the best ex-

The Phuket International Night Run 2014 will take place November 1 starting at 10pm and will go through the streets of Phuket Old Town. Photo: Facebook perience,” he says, “this is a way to promote cultural tourism, sport, and Phuket Town through a unique and creative experience.” Pouring out of his love for the sport and Phuket Town, Mr Bhummikitti has already approached tourism associations, local administations, and hospitality groups around the island’s beach towns to coordinate a way to promote the event and transport tourists who would be interested. “I already know, as a runner, that the tourist runners
will come. It’s just a matter of getting to Phuket Town. We want to make sure that they come and go back safely,” he says, adding that he expects about 800 total runners for this first event. In a unique twist, the event will feature five photo stations for runners to take a “selfie” picture. Participants who take photos at least three out of the five stations, and upload onto Facebook with the hashtag #Phuketnightrun, will receive a free print out of one of their photos at the finish line.
“But they must cross the finish line,” Mr Bhummikitti says with a smile. Par ticipants can also choose their own bib number for a small fee, with proceeds going towards educational charities around Phuket. “I’m sure if this year is successful, this can become an annual event in the future,” he says. Australian star quits for NFL career RUGBY LEAGUE AUST R A LI A N RUGBY leag ue superst a r Ja r r yd Hayne on Wednesday (October 15) dropped a bombshell by quitting the code to pursue an NFL career in the United States. Just days af ter being named in Australia’s squad for the Four Nations tournament, Hayne announced he was leaving the Parramatta
Eels in an unprecedented code swap. “For the past 24 months I’ve been thinking about having a crack in the NFL, and over the last 12 months I’ve been seriously considering it,” Hayne said in a statement on the club’s website. “Today I can officially announce that I will be heading to the United States to pursue an opportunity to play American Football.” The team he was joining

was not mentioned, but the 26-year-old fullback recently visited the reigning Super Bowl champions Seat tle Seahawks. He said he was immediately withdrawing from the Australian squad for the Four Nations tournament, with the Kangaroos due to face New Zealand on October 25. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and at my age, this is my one and only chance at having
a crack at playing there,” Hayne said. “I’m excited about the potential opportunities that lie ahead. I’ve known the deadline has been looming for me to make this call, and I believe the right time is now.” He added that he had agreed a lifetime deal with Parramatta so that, should he return to rugby league, it would only be with the Eels. M UAY T H A I S TA R Buakaw Banchamek claimed last week that he left the ring before the end of Saturday’s fight (October 11) because he had been treated badly. Buakaw’s bout against Germany’s Enriko Kehl in the 70kg division of the K-1 World Max Final in Pattaya ended in a draw after three rounds. According to the rules, a fourth round was needed to determine the winner, but Buakaw and his team left the venue at the end of the third and final round. Kehl was declared the winner in Buakaw’s absence. “I wanted to protect the reputation of muay Thai,” Buakaw told a press conference at his Banchamek Gym, claiming there were changes to the rules which put him at a disadvantage, and he thought he won the contest. “I am sure the fans also thought I won,” said Buakaw, a two-time K-1 Max champion. “I decided before the fight
that I would leave the venue immediately after three rounds because I was not happy with the change to the rules. “It was my own decision. This had nothing to do with my manager or my corner men. Buakaw had earlier claimed online betting might have influenced the outcome. But when pressed by reporters, he refused to discuss the matter. He said he would continue fighting in K-1 because he is under contract with K-1 Global Holdings, the worldwide organiser of the sport. “K-1 makes me famous worldwide,” Buakaw said. “I will honour my contract which expires at the end of next year but we need to discuss details.” Ned Kuruc, of K-1 Global Holdings, said that he was willing to hold talks with Buakaw to discuss his contract. “I don’t want to make any accusations against Buakaw,” he said. “We need information from him. Buakaw is still regarded as a K-1 legend and we need time to talk.” Bangkok Post

Irish stun Germans as Ronaldo rescues FOOTBALL
W
orld champions Germany stumbled again in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign on Tuesday (October 14), drawing 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland on a night where Cristiano Ronaldo and a flying drone made headlines elsewhere. Ronaldo’s late header gave Portugal a 1-0 win in Denmark to kickstart their qualifying campaign, but the meeting between Serbia and Albania in the same Group I was abandoned after crowd trouble in Belgrade. Germany had suffered their first qualifying defeat since 2007 at the weekend, losing 2-0 in Poland in Group D, but the World Cup winners were greeted by a huge fan mosaic at one end of the stadium in Gelsenkirchen which read simply ‘Thank You’, proving that such a defeat could not overshadow their heroics of July. Only five of the players who started in the win against Argentina in Rio de Janeiro lined up at kick-off against
Martin O’Neill’s men. Bor ussia Dor t mu nd’s Erik Durm, who went to the World Cup but did not play, smashed a shot off the bar in the first half before a precise Toni Kroos strike in the 71st minute gave Joachim Loew’s men the lead. But Ireland stunned their hosts by equalising in the fourth minute of added time with their first effort on target from veteran defender John O’Shea in his 100th game for the Irish. The result means Poland are top of Group D from Ireland on goal difference, with Scotland and Germany three points further back, while Georgia beat Gibraltar 3-0 to record their first points. “We’re all disappointed. I think that was Ireland’s only chance of the game and they scored from it,” said Loew. “In the last few minutes, we were simply naive.” Ireland’s hero O’Shea added: “We have a fantastic spirit, we didn’t want to come off having lost with people thinking we just did ok.” In Warsaw, Poland took the lead against Gordon Strachan’s side through Krzysztof
Maczynski, but Shaun Maloney and Steven Naismith found the net for Scotland, leaving the hosts requiring a magnificent Arkadiusz Milik goal to earn a 2-2 draw in a thrilling match. In Copenhagen, Cristiano Ronaldo headed in Ricardo Quaresma’s cross in the fifth minute of injury time to score his 51st international goal and give Portugal victory against their Danish hosts in their first competitive game under new coach Fernando Santos. Ronaldo said: “I want to congratulate the team for always believing. We knew it was going to be a difficult game but we showed confidence right to the end.” Meanwh ile, Alba n ia , who won away in Portugal in Group I last month to precipitate the departure of Portuguese coach Paulo Bento, saw their match with Serbia in Belgrade abandoned after trouble started just before halftime with the score goalless. A drone sporting the Albanian flag was flown over the stadium, sparking fury among Serbian fans and players and leading to clashes between the two teams on the pitch.
Serbian fans hurled smoke bombs and other missiles onto the pitch in protest in a game from which Albanian fans had been barred because of the sensitive relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, Nor ther n Ireland made it three wins from three in Group F with a remarkable 2-0 victory away to Greece in Piraeus, Jamie Ward and Kyle Lafferty finding the net either side of half-time for Michael O’Neill’s side. The result leaves Claudio Ranieri’s Greece side, European champions in 2004, lagging behind with just one point so far. In England’s Group E, Switzerland recorded their first points with a 4-0 victory away to hapless San Marino, with Haris Seferovic scoring twice and Blerim Dzemaili and Xherdan Shaqiri also on target. The next round of qualifiers will be played over the weekend of November 14 to 16. AFP English Premier League football resumes this weekend (October 18).

IN PREPARATION FOR THE upcoming BNP Paribas WTA Finals 2014 in Singapore, world no. 2 tennis star Maria Sharapova sharpened her skills at Thanyapura Phuket during a seven-day training camp. The five-time grand slam winner came to the island right after her recent victory at the China Open in Beijing because of a recommendation by Billie Jean King (legendary tennis player and founder of the Women’s Tennis Association). “It’s always nice when you train in an environment where it’s really a sports facility and you’re surrounded by staff that are professionals, and other athletes,” she said in a statement. This is the second time Sharapova has been to Phuket, but the first time she has trained under the island sun. In addition to her training camp, Sharapova was able
to share some wisdom with students from the Thanyapura Elite Junior Sports Academy. “It’s a little different from when you see an athlete training for a sprint or a marathon or their special sport. The work ethic is very different and that’s why it’s been so good to stay here,” she said. The BNP Paribas WTA Finals 2014 takes place October 17 – 26.
Sharapova Smoothie “I’ve really been into green juices this year so I’ve been making them with kiwi, cucumber, kale, mint and pineapple or apple to give it a bit of sweetness. That’s been pretty much my go-to juice,” she said. The ‘Sharapova Smoothie’ is now available at Thanyapura.
