RAGE OF THE ELEPHANTS LIFE
TWO MAHOUTS DIE AS ANGRY ELEPHANTS GO ON RAMPAGE Nattha Thepbamrung & Saran Mitrarat editor@classactmedia.co.th
T
he Phuket Livestock Office Chief has issued a stern warning to elephant camps to be careful about using elephants during breeding season when bull elephants are in musth, a highly excitable hormonal state in which the animals become unpredictable and dangerous. In fact, he said, the best way to
avoid people being killed by elephants would be to simply ban elephant trekking and other kinds of commercial exploitation when the animals are in the breeding season. Werasit Puthipairoj spoke with The Phuket News after a mahout, or elephant handler was killed at the Phuchada Safari kraal in Naiharn on Tuesday (November 18) by Nong Po, a 23-year-old bull elephant which was in musth. Nong Po picked up Wittawat
Salangan, 22, from Surin Province, in his trunk, slammed him to the ground and then knelt down, crushing him with his head and tusks. That death came just two days after a similar incident in Phang Nga in which a mahout was killed. A Russian woman with an eightmonth-old baby spent a terrifying 30 minutes sitting in the howdah atop the raging elephant. Other handlers managed to tranquillise that elephant with darts and

Mr Werasit said that trying to get an elephant in musth to work “is like people trying to ask you to work when you are sick. “The elephant was still in musth, which the camp and the mahout should have known. “It was not ready to be brought out to work, especially when male elephants are more aggressive than females.”

Elephants kill two mahouts Continued from page 1 He said when a bull elephant is in musth, oil can be seen leaking from holes next to the elephant’s ears and the ears do not move as normal. The elephant’s eyes, too, are a sign – they look angry. “Breeding season normally begins around the end of rainy season because that is when food is plentiful. Camps and mahouts must be responsible and stop using an elephant until it is no longer in rut.” However, he noted, elephants can sometimes come into rut at other times. “It depends on the environment, the animal’s physical condition and the food, which may affect its condition.” He said a bull elephant may calm down if it can breed but if it cannot, it should be tied up in the forest away from other elephants. “Sometimes, the male elephants choose female elephants
Nong Po, chained up again, watches as the body of the mahout he killed is taken away by emergency responders. that do not want to breed and which fight them off. The mahout must stop using the elephant [for treks] and chain it in the forest with plenty of food around it [or must feed it] for a month.” He said “many” mahouts
cut the amount of food they give their elephant when it is in rut so that they can keep using it to make money. “Many mahouts use this ploy. They cut back the amount of food to reduce the hormones. But doing so will probably
make the elephant more angry because of the hunger. “The best way to avoid incidents like [Tuesday’s] is simply to stop using elephants [in the breeding season].” The Phang Nga and Phuket deaths had close similarities, Mr Werasit
said, the cause being the use of bull elephants while they are in musth; the 18-year-old bull elephant, Miew, which killed the mahout in Phang Nga, was also in musth. Asked whether the Livestock Office has any rules
regarding training of mahouts and elephants, he said that the office’s register only records the name of the elephant, the elephant’s parents and owner but not details about training. “The mahouts must know their elephants the most, control them and take care of them properly.” He said he could not make a judgement whether the camp or the mahout was at fault in either the Phuchada or Phang Nga death (police said the Wittawat was drunk when he was killed, and had “annoyed” Nong Po), but he added that “it all comes down to the morality of making money from elephants”. He also warned visitors going to elephant camps or zoos not to tease the animals. “If you want to give food to them, you should give it straight away, not play with their food. That could annoy them and cause violence,” he said.
Yes, you can take your umbrella OFFICIALS TOLD THE Phuket News on Wednesday (November 19) that tourists may bring their own personal umbrellas to the beach. Vice-Governor Jamroen Tipayapongtada and the Phuket police commander made their remarks after a Swedish family were recently asked to remove their umbrellas from the beach. V/Gov Jamroen told The Phuket News, “I don’t have any complaints to be honest, it is their right to use an umbrella and lay on the beach.” “In my opinion, if every beach had a specific area for

tunity for them. But, I would need to talk with the Phuket Land department first, then I’ll know what the options are.” Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit confirmed to The Phuket News, “I heard about the tourists who were recently asked to remove their umbrellas. If the police were to arrest the tourists, it would be silly. “I went to Karon to see what was going on, but I didn’t see anything. I can confirm that tourists may use their own umbrellas on the beach and they will not be arrested.”

T
he island’s police chief has assigned his deputy, Col Arayapan Pukbuakao, to head up an investigation of a major narcotics network with links to a woman in Bangkok. The order came after four men were arrested in Phuket on Monday (November 17) in possession of 19,000 methamphetamine pills (ya bah) and just under 125 grams of crystal meth (ya ice). “There are many drug networks with links to other provinces that are infiltrating Phuket, and which we are now getting rid of step by step – more and more will be arrested soon,” said Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit. The four men arrested – all from Phuket – were identified by police as network leader Somkid “Bao” Prateeptong, 38; Songwut “Ake” Tang-u-tai, 37; Sarawut “Bird” Tanrakan, 28; and Imrum “Lee” Jaewo, 37. Police also seized two illegal guns and 113 rounds of ammunition from them. The rolling arrests began with a report from an undercover officer that led by Col Arayapan and Lt Col Jarun Bangprasert and their provincial investigation team to a house in Soi Sahakorn Khet, Rassada, where they arrested Imrum at about 3:30pm after finding six grams of ya ice. “Police found the drugs in his pocket. He told us he bought the drugs from Sarawut, who lives in Wichit,” said Gen Patchara. Police descended on Sarawut’s home in Moo 1, Wichit, at 6pm. There, the seized 50 grams of ya ice, 1,000 ya bah pills and an unlicensed

They also impounded a Toyota car. “Bird in turn confessed that he had bought the drugs from Songwut, who lives behind Andaman place mansion on Mae Luan Rd,” he added. The arrests rolled on and the drug hauls got bigger. Songwut was found to be in possession of 50 grams of ya ice and 3,800 ya bah pills. “He told the officers that all the drugs had been bought from Somkid, who lives in rented accommodation in a soi near Wat Sapam,” the general said. That led to the big fish in the network, Somkid. Police raided his place at 11:30pm and came away with a haul of eight packs of ya bah – 2,000 pills per pack – a total of 16,000 pills, and a limited-edition Colt pistol with 50 bullets. They also took away his shiny red-plate Honda Jazz. Records showed that Somkid was released from jail three years ago after doing time for possession of Category 1 narcotics with intent to sell. He told officers that while in jail he was introduced to
a narcotics ring headed by a woman in Bangkok known as Jae (Sister) Na. “Each time Somkid ordered drugs from Jae Na by phone and, after selling them, transferred money to her through three bank accounts in the names of Ms Warisara Srithammasak, Mr Anupol Witoon and Ms Jantratip Inthasut,” Gen Patchara explained. Jae Na would send a courier to Phuket who would hand over the drugs to Somkid at the Phuket Bus Terminal 2 and then promptly get on the next bus back to the capital. The busts not only leave the four facing jail time, but have also left Somkid deep in debt to Jae Na. At the press conference he said that the original order for the latest batch was for 22,000 pills. “I have sold drugs for more than five months. The latest delivery from Bangkok was on November 9 when I ordered 11 packs [each containing 2,000 meth pills] which Jae Na let me have on credit.” He explained that Jae Na expected to be paid B200,000 per pack, which he then sold on
for B230,000. He had already sold two of the latest consignment of 11 packs when he was caught. He also ordered a kilo of ya ice, but this had been sold already, he said. “At the moment my debt to Jae Na totals B2 million.” Col Arayapan now has orders to cooperate with police in Bangkok to track down Jae Na.
RESIDENTS OF A VILLage in Srisoonthorn have complained to local authorities about erosion that bit a large chunk out of the Baan Lipon-Baan Bangjo Rd, cutting off their direct route in and out of their village. The authorities say there is no money to fix it. The road was made impassable when a large piece collapsed after the soil under it was washed away by heavy rain on November 9, leaving a hole about eight metres wide and two metres deep. Baan Lipon resident Supaporn Jareonrak, 46, said, “This is the road we use to get to Thepkrasattri Rd and Srisoonthorn Rd. We want officials to fix the road for us so we can

They told us that that they have no funds to fix the road and repairs will have to wait until they do. “They also told us to use an alternative route that goes through Baan Bangjo Prison – which is open for public to use only from 7am to 5:30pm.” Many residents, particularly women, say they are too frightened of the idea of driving through the prison to go that way, which leaves them stuck until the municipality can scrape together the money to fix the hole.

huket Governor Nisit Jansomwong has agreed to push for a B67-million-budget to eliminate the province’s million-ton trash mountain by turning much of the waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The plan to rid Phuket of an estimated million tons of surplus garbage over the next three years was proposed by Regional Environmental Office 15 director, Dr Pornsri Suthanaruk, at a meeting between local officials on November 12. He told the committee that the Siam Cement (SCG) plant in Nakorn Sri Thammarat was seeking alternative fuel sources to coal and would be able to process and use 500,000 tons of refuse from Phuket over the coming three years. Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupapana said the remaining 500,000 tons could be

However, she noted, clear terms of service must be drawn up first. If given the go-ahead, SCG and PJT Technology would process 333,333 tons of garbage a year between 2015 and 2017. Governor Nisit agreed that turning Phuket’s waste into fuel was a ‘win-win’ solution
to the long-standing problem of dealing with the excess trash in Phuket. An additional B1.5 million was requested to improve hazardous waste storage facilities. The nature of the hazardous waste was not specified. Waste water management issues were also discussed at the November 12 meeting with Rassada Mayor Phudit Raksarat raising his concerns that Rassada Municipality
was still in crisis mode using chemicals to treat the 300500 cubic meters of waste water per day flowing through Bangyai Canal while waiting for a proper treatment plant and drains to be installed in the area. “We are currently using chemicals to treat the waste water due to a lack of public land to build proper water treatment facilities. However, the municipality has asked to
use land owned by Wichit Na Ranong on which to build a plant,” said Mayor Phudit. Establishing a water treatment facility on the land would necessitate a three-year feasibility study, he added. In response, Governor Nisit suggested that waste water from Rassada should be temporarily diverted to the Muang Phuket treatment facility through the municipal pipeline until a new plant is built in Rassada. “The Muang Phuket treatment plant has sufficient capacity to also handle waste water from Rassada,” he said. The meeting concluded that funding would be sought from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to establish waste water treatment facilities in 13 additional locations across Phuket, including Kathu and Karon – two areas that Deputy Director of Waste Water Management Authority Cheera Wongburana said were urgently in need of proper treatment facilities.
Pegas Turistik threatens legal action against false reps

Pegas Turistik representative Nikorn Yatinunt.
TOUR OPERATOR PEGAS Turistik has threatened to sue those responsible for issuing documents claiming to represent the company and prominently displaying the Tourist Police insignia. Pegas Turistik head office representative, Nikorn Yatinunt, filed a complaint at Kathu Police station on October 31 and requested that police help track down those who have falsely represented the tour company.
The document in question, a black and white photocopy of a form in Thai, English and Russian, appears to be an attempt to deter customers from dealing with other firms in Phuket. Mr Nikorn said the company took action immediately after learning from The Phuket News of the document. Pegas Touristik has also posted warnings wherever possible that it will take legal
action against any unauthorized person claiming to represent it. “This is a serious matter. Even if we cannot find those responsible, we warn others that the company will not tolerate this and will take legal action,” said Mr Nikorn. “Every single document issued by Pegas Turistik has our logo at the top.” he added. Mr Nikorn said he believed the warning had been effective as the document seemed to be
no longer circulating. Mr Nikorn suspects the document may be the work of a former employee pretending to represent the company as an independent agent. “Pegas Turistik usually signs contracts with foreign employees for between six and eight months. When those contracts end, many of them then become independent agents. Some try to cheat customers,” he said.

Bar owners cancel protest Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th
A
planned protest that would have closed several bars around Patong area for three days in response to the strict 2am closing time for bars was cancelled by the President of Patong Entertainment Business Association, Weerawit Kruesombut. The protest would have begun on Saturday (November 14) and continued to Monday (November 16). “I have negotiated with [Patong bar operators] about this telling them to hold on and close at 2am as authorities have requested we preserve the good image of the province. Also, [Patong bar operators] will be good hosts in helping to welcome guests of
the Asian Beach Games,” said Mr Weerawit. He insists that bar operators are holding on until after the Asian Beach Games. If the bars still have to close at 2am after that, owners will re-examine their options on how to push back against the measure. “Initially, [Patong bar operators] decided to protest because they used to close later, at 3am, and this is the beginning of the high season, when they can make more money.” Mr Weerawit said he knows the law states bars are allowed to operate until 1am at the latest, but Patong is different. “In Patong people start going out around 11pm so they have only two hours to enjoy themselves if we close as the law requires. “The extra one hour that
Many bars will not join any protest because they will lose money and staff to competitors Photo Earthbound Misfit we have should be officially sanctioned. I think bars here would be happy to pay more tax for the extra hour.” He insinuated that, apart from cutting business profit of
bars in Patong, the law opens the door for corrupt officers to demand money from bar owners. The bar workers in the area told The Phuket News that they
had heard about the protest. “High season has just started. Normally, [this bar] can make around B60,000 a night. If we have to close earlier, the number of tourists coming to bars will drop,” said a woman working in a Bangla Rd bar. It’s not clear whether most bars would join in with any protest closure, during or after the Asian Beach Games. One foreign bar owner wrote to The Phuket News after our original story appeared online: “Not sure what … Weerawit Kruesombut is talking about as he hasn’t spoken to many if any bar owners at all. “I did speak with bar owners and it was only the Thai owners that were going to protest and close. “Every foreign owner (which is the majority of own-
ers of bars on Bangla Rd) I spoke with about this said they were going to stay open regardless of what the others were doing. “Weerawit Kruesombut had not spoken with any of these people. It wasn’t a directive from the police, army or any other authority. Even after the Asian Beach Games, the majority of bars will not close. “The 2am closures might be around for another week or so, but the bars will still be open everyday. If some want to close, let them, but every bar owner I spoke with said they never had any intention of closing. “If they did, it just means no money, more customers for the others [who stay open] and the the staff will jump bars because they still need work.”

A witness, Suriya Primmin, told police he saw the car go out of control and hit the central reservation before crashing into the pole. Police, who also found luggage in the car, said they believe Ms Nicha may have fallen asleep at the wheel after a long journey. Ms Nicha joined the hospital staff

atong business operators called off a protest on Monday (November 17) at Phuket Provincial Hall because they feared they might be arrested under martial law, which prohibits public assemblies of more than five people. The protest was supposed to come after an open letter was released at the weekend (November 15-16) in the Patong area, addressed to vendors at the OTOP Market, the Kokeaw Market, the Bangla Market, the Sai Nam Yen Market, and those on Thaweewong Rd. The letter stated, “We are now in trouble from action by some groups, especially the Patong Association led by “Noom Carcare” or “Noom OTOP” known as Mr Kobchai Truktrongkij, who is assistant to Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup, who send their staff to extort money from us.” It added that the shops faces demands for at least B20,000 a month, “depending on the

The “victims” of this extortion all appear to be people who are breaking the law in one way or another, for example
by selling pirated goods or employing illegal workers. Volunteer guards from Kathu District Office were waiting on Monday morning for the protest to start. But it didn’t happen. The Phuket News noticed a few people from Patong hanging around – these people, confronted by the volunteers, denied being part of any protest.
One woman, who said she sells pirate goods at the OTOP Market, spoke to The Phuket News under condition of anonymity, “No one has shown up to lead the protest, so I don’t want to identify myself as a Patong business operator. “This situation might contravene martial law. If I put my hand up, they may arrest me,” she said. “The extortion has been
been going on for a long time in Patong. I have paid about B1,000 to B2,000 a month to many police and government departments. “They don’t even bother to come in person now – they just send a representative who collects for all of them. But you know, whether we pay or not, we still get arrested from time to time,” she explained. She noted that at the beginning of Chalermluck Kebsup’s tenure as Mayor of Patong the demands stopped for three or four months, but then resumed. “I thought the system would improve after the mayor was changed. That and martial law, I thought, would make it easier for us to operate. At first, that was the case,” she said. “However, about four months after that they were back and demanding money at a higher rate.” Mr Kobchai denied emphatically the allegations that he was involved in extorting money and said he thought it might be a case of political dirty tricks.

After the beating he was handed over to police. At 11:30 pm on November 11, Pol Lt Peerasit Noopayan was called to the Twin Brothers restaurant at Surin Beach, where they found the Burmese suspect, 22-year-old Abdol, and his friend Mow, 21, being held captive. Abdol had minor head injuries and bruises all over his body.. The 12-year-old told police she was asleep in her bedroom, toward the back of the restaurant, while her parents were in the front of the shop. “Someone grabbed me, I woke up and jumped up, causing him to poke his finger in my eye, so I screamed,” the girl said. The suspect ran off into nearby woods but relatives and neighbours help capture him and gave him a good beating. Both men were charged with trespass and with living in Thailand illegally.

Gov stresses safety first in Ebola precautions Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th
G
overnor Nisit Jansomwong has announced that the island is ready should Ebola virus be detected, and has stressed that stringent precautions must be taken to ensure no one other than the victim becomes infected. “All sections are ready to screen people travelling from countries that [are experiencing] Ebola virus outbreaks. “Today, we just want to encourage greater integration among [the departments] and create greater mutual understanding to make sure that the process is followed strictly,” the governor told The Phuket News. He explained how the watch and detection system works: Airport staff have lists of names of people travelling from affected countries and pass these to the local office of the International Communicable Disease Control Department (ICDCD), which is also at the airport.” Arrivals
One of the staff of the new unit poses in her PPE with Governor Nisit (2nd from left) and Deputy DG of the Department of Medical Science Wanchai Sattayawuthipong (right). from high risk zones are taken to the ICDCD office he said. There, they are given thorough check-ups. “The name lists are also distributed to airport Immigration and to the Provincial Public Health Office which has a special section that follows up with the special arrivals over a period of 21 days,” the Governor said. They are backed up by the expertise of the local office of the Department of Medical
Science. Hospitals, too, receive copies of the lists of names. Anyone in whom Ebola is suspected will promptly enter the screening and separation process – which already exists to handle cases of malaria and dengue fever. “There are negative pressure rooms around the island, one at the Phuket International Hospital, two at the Bangkok Hospital and seven at Vachira Phuket Hospital,” he said. Negative pressure rooms
are rooms in which air pressure is kept lower than outside so that airborne bacteria and viruses cannot escape. The Kusoltham Rescue Foundation has also decided to buy full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – the kind of space suits seen in movies such as the Dustin Hoffman thriller Outbreak, the Governor said. “We have enough equipment in each [government department] for anyone who may come into
contact with people infected by serious diseases.” In the meeting, the governor also said he worried about the safety of operational officials and stressed that PPEs must be provided, especially in cases in which the cause of death was unknown. “The recent incident of the British man, Martin Clark, found dead in his Patong condominium was a lesson for us all. We were very lucky that he didn’t have the Ebola virus because the people at the scene did not protect themselves. “Officials have to be careful in such cases. Police, rescue volunteers and even news reporters may only be allowed into the site after checks have been made with the Public Health Office. “If the dead person is on a list of people from Ebolacountries, anyone going into the locus must wear PPE. “We are just preparing for any possible situation to ensure the effectiveness of each section and I am relieved to see that the Public Health Office and all others involved are well prepared.”
Special ebola facility opens at Vachira VACHIR A HOSPITAL Phuket on Tuesday (November 18) opened Southern Thailand’s first ebola testing lab and Designated Receiving Area (DRA). The new unit is the third in the country and the first in Southern Thailand, dedicated to testing and treating patients suspected of suffering from ebola or other serious diseases such as dengue fever and malaria. The unit is equipped with a biological safety cabinet, allowing blood tests to be carried out in isolation, as well as machines to perform automated blood counts and detect biochemicals. Inside the lab technicians wear biological protection suits. Presiding over the opening of the new unit was Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Science, Wanchai Sattayawuthipong. He said Phuket was chosen as one of the first provinces to be equipped with a DRA due to the high number of international visitors to the province. No cases of ebola have been reported in Thailand.
Cement truck driver caught after fleeing scene Electric angler ends up zapping himself
The smashed motorbike lies under the truck after the crash.
PHUKET CITY POLICE have arrested the driver of the cement truck who ran away after he was in collision with a motorbike at 1pm on November 13. The bike rider, an 18-yearold Rajabhat University Phuket student died in the crash. Police, called to the scene, found the body of the student, Chalermchai Lakbaan of Talad Yai, lying under the truck, along with his bike. He had been run over by the truck. The accident took place in front of the Phuket Cement
Co on Prachasamakee Rd in Rasada. The truck driver was nowhere to be seen. Witnesses said that both vehicles were going in the same direction, from Boat Plaza, when the motorcycle sped up in an attempt to pass the cement truck. At that moment the truck turned abruptly into Phuket Cement Co, across the path of the bike. On Wednesday police told The Phuket News that the driver had surrendered to them, but they declined to give his name.

on his hand from where he was electrocuted. After questioning the victim’s relatives, police learned that Suchart had trespassed into the area to go fishing and had plugged the wire into the power outlet in the facility before heading to the pond to fish. Police said, “It appears that the wire had a crack in the insulation through which the electricity leaked, killing him.”

NGO fears prostitution rife among young sea people Nattha Thepbamrung

D
esperate girls in their early teens from the sea people community in Rawai are being drawn into a dangerous culture of drug-taking and prostitution, says a concerned NGO worker living and working in the village near Chalong Pier. With many in the community unable to escape abject poverty as well as dealing with family issues, drugs and prostitution are often seen as the only way out. The group of young prostitutes can be seen standing around the Rawai pier waiting for their customers which mainly are local Thai people. Concerned community member, Alin Hadsaithong, 55, who works with a Christian NGO involved with the village, told The Phuket News that girls as young as 10 years old were becoming addicted to drugs, subsequently leading them into prostitution rings. Young girls from the Morgen tribe of sea people seem to be among the majority of youngsters getting into prostitution, said Alin. “The girls who have become prostitutes have done so for various reasons but their problems are all similar,” said Alin. “One of the girls I have known since she was a baby. She was very good at school; @thephuketnews
Tourists enjoy the view from the pier, totally unaware of the sad drama being played out just metres away from them. smart and devout in her religion. She lives with her extended family, including aunts and uncles and a 60-year-old ‘godfather’, who would take her to school every day. “He was like a grandfather figure and we respected him very much, until we found out that he had raped the girl, said Alin. “Her mother desperately wants to move her daughter away but their choices are limited to within the sea gypsy village. The girl has changed completely. She stopped going to school and rarely goes
home. Now she spends most of her time hanging around at the pier. Mr Alin’s daughther, Weerawan Hadsaithong, 32, said some of the girls become hooked on drugs such as betel and amphetamine as young as 13, and then turn to prostitution to feed their habits. “They [the girls] have told me that their customers are mainly local Thai people. Their business has grown through word of mouth. I see people coming here late at night for it.” The girls told Ms Weerawan they get B500 - B1,000
per time. Very few of them have protected sex. “The very young girls, aged around 10 years old, get introduced to drugs and drink by their friends, who then invite them to get into prostitution,” said Ms Weerawan. Kanvara Chua-On, another Christian NGO worker involved with the village, told The Phuket News that the problem was a very hard one to deal with, without concrete support from local officials. “We can not blame the children for their mistakes. Often they have been raped by family member or abandoned
by alcoholic parents,” said Kanvara Chua-On. “These [the rapes] are criminal cases, but the children and other family members believe they are secondclass citizens with no rights. They are too scared to go to the police or report abuse,” she said. “It is very sad that many NGOs help the village by donating money for the kids’ education, but once they reach 13 or 14 years old, they quit studying and become prostitutes or get pregnant,” she said. “Health workers did once
give away condoms to the villagers but that’s it,” she said. “Apart from the increasing number of drug addicts and prostitutes in the village, I am really worried about them catching sexually transmitted diseases. The children start off with a bright future but this is the result if they are not taken care of properly. Commenting on the issue, Rawai Mayor, Arun Soros, told The Phuket News that the municipality had tried to help the villagers deal with these issues but admitted that it was a tough challenge as the villagers don’t really open up to outside help. “It is clear there is a drug problem among teens in the village. We have tried to speak with them but there was not much response,” said Mayor Arun. The mayor said the municipality would work more closely with health workers in Rawai to try and address some of the problems through health and sex-education programmes. He said he would contact the Phuket Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office. “They are directly responsible for this kind of problem. We will request manpower from Phuket volunteers to help out. The mayor promised that a meeting between authorities and village leaders would be proposed to be held to discuss solutions within the month.

The great animal debate
R
ecent weeks have seen a spate of deaths and injuries to humans caused by captive animals used in the tourist trade, adding fuel to the debate on whether animals should be used for entertainment. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday (November 18) at Phuchada Safari in Chalong, where mahout Wittawat Salangan, 22, was crushed to death by the elephant in his care. The bull elephant had been chained because he was in musth – a periodic condition when adult male elephants can be aggressive towards other elephants and their handlers due to high testosterone levels – but the safari owners felt that he had been chained long enough and told Wittawat to release him and get him ready for work. It was then that the elephant attacked. The previous Sunday a mahout was killed by his elephant

No beach-chairs, but plenty of garbage Re: Beach-chair dilemma I have created a poster that says: “Please, give us back chairs and umbrellas on the beach. Regards tourists. We love Thailand.” This hangs on my back when I go out and I have gotten a lot of feedback. Also, garbage floats on the beach. No one takes responsibility for removing it. Although I cleared two sacks and one with bottles that I carried up to the road. But that’s just a little of what’s where I lie. Anne Re: POLL: Should beachchair, umbrella and massage services be allowed back onto Phuket beaches? Don’t bring them back but clean up Naiharn and Ya Nui beaches! I prefer the natural state of the beaches but chairs and massage stalls are better than a rubbish dump! Bazm

In October, an Australian tourist was injured in a tiger attack at Tiger Kingdom in Kathu. Paul Goudie, 49, from Melbourne, Australia, was mauled by the tiger after posing with it for photographs. Plans to open a dolphinarium in Chalong have been the most controversial, sparking anger among animal rights advocates world wide. A swath of NGOs, environmentalists, students and academics have joined the protests against the dolphinarium, which although complete, has not yet opened. Ironically, it is illegal to catch dolphins in Thai waters. In a positive move against animal cruelty, Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly (NLA) passed the country’s first ever Animal Welfare Bill on November 13.
The bill is designed to punish people who abuse or neglect animals. It covers domesticated pets, animals raised for food, working animals, animals kept for entertainment purposes, wild animals in captivity and animals kept for any other purpose – prohibiting cruel treatment of animals and stipulating that owners/carers must provide appropriate living conditions and a certain level of animal welfare. However, the Soi Dog Foundation, which played an advisory role in the crafting of the legislation, expressed disappointment that the new bill does not go far enough. Should we continue to use animals for entertainment purposes, particularly if there is a strong demand, or should we put a stop to the practice once and for all? Re: Land offices ‘greediest in the country’ – bribery survey We cross our fingers that drastic change will come out to stop corruption and greed among civil servants from low-paid officers up to senior civil servants which is the start of all problems plaguing Thailand for so long. Until corruption is seen as unacceptable by Thai people the country will be plagued with the consequences. Without corrupt police & officials
this would not be possible. Things have to change from the bottom up, with people demanding higher standards from their public servants. Signs of corruption and greed and a keenness to compromise rather than enforce the law remain all too obvious. Charlie
Wild west roads out of control Re: Phuket remembrance day of road traffic victims on November 25 This comes across as some sort of sick joke. From someone who has lost a mother to a road accident, I cannot see the benefit from this. Only when there is proper policing of the roads will there ever be a change. Police check points to target farangs, yet two thousand school kids leave school and get on motorbikes every day after school without helmets or license! Is five hundred baht more important than than educating kids on road safety. Or maybe five hundred baht is more important than a Thai kid’s life. Concrete trucks and tour buses drive at high speeds
like lobotomised monkeys. The constant suggestion of speed humps at black spots has never been implemented, yet lives are lost daily. The two weeks of my work roster spent in Phuket exposes me to far more graphic road accidents than all the years I lived in Australia. In Chiang Mai, I never heard one ambulance siren yet in Phuket it is as common as a smile from a bar girl. Stop concentrating on collecting money from farangs and bring some order to the roads. The years of inept policing and lawlessness has resulted in ‘wild west’ road attitude. Too late to change? Mourne

LT Dept to crack down on illegal transport in capital OPERATORS OF PUBLIC passenger vans have until the end of December to register with authorities or be banned from providing public transport services, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) warned yesterday. DLT director-general Teerapong Rodprasert said a total of 3,074 passengers vans have received permission from the central land transport committee to operate as public passenger vans after passing inspections. Of these, 1,262 of the vans operate in Bangkok and the remaining 1,812 on routes between Bangkok and nearby provinces. Although they have DLT approval to provide public transport services, they must register with the department by the end of this year, Mr Teerapong said. Once legally registered as public vehicles, public van operators and drivers must strictly abide by land transport regulations. Those found to be operating outside of their service routes, collecting fares higher than the legal limit, or carrying passengers in excess of the legal limit will be fined, said the department chief.

Survey: Land offices greediest in country A
Teerapong Rodprasert If they repeat the offence, they will face both a fine and additional punishment as stated in contracts signed with authorities. A third offence would mean a fine and their names would be struck off the department’s list of public transport operators. Mr Teerapong also warned operators of illegal vans with black licence plates that they face prison terms of up to five years and fines of B20,000100,000 if they are found to be illegally operating on routes in Bangkok and nearby provinces. He warned there would be severe crackdowns on illegal van services.
sur vey has found that the country’s Land Off ices are the greediest in the country, clawing in the largest total in bribes in January and February this year. But on average, public schools demanded the biggest individual bribes, at B11,796 a time, followed by B10,538 raked in by Customs offices. Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics conducted the survey on 6,048 households in January and February this year – before the Army coup – to determine how much money was involved and where the serious problems were. The poll found the respondents were asked to pay a combined B4.94 billion during the two months. Despite this being a whopping amount, it was less than a third of the B15.40 billion paid in bribes in the same period 15 years ago, according to Prof Pasuk Phongpaichit, who led the survey, and who was on the panel releasing the results
The pie graph shows the results of the survey of 6,048 households conducted earlier this year, which found that the respondents had paid some B5 billion in bribes to local officials, a third of what was paid in a similar survey conducted 15 years ago. yesterday (November 18). Of the total in the two months this year, 39pc was solicited at land offices, 36pc at police stations, 13pc at public schools, 4pc at the Transport Department, 3pc each at Customs offices and local administrative organisations and 1pc each at the Revenue Department’s offices and other agencies.
The poll also found heads of the surveyed households perceived the police as being the most corrupt in the public sector, followed by members of Parliament, Bangkok’s City Hall Council, district councils and the Commerce Ministry. But although they were concerned about corruption, respondents generally felt the problem was less severe than
economic problems and the high cost of living. They believed educational institutions were the most efficient in tackling corruption, followed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission. Australia shuts the door on asylum-seekers in Indonesia A
ustralian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison last week said he was “taking the sugar off the table” in announcing that Canberra was slamming the door on UN-registered asylum-seekers in Indonesia. Morrison said that from July next year asylum-seekers officially recognised by the United Nations refugee agency in Jakarta would no longer be eligible for resettlement in Australia. The move, he said, was part of the government’s work to “strip people-smugglers of a product to sell to vulnerable men, women and children” and stop Indonesia being used as a transit lounge. “We’re taking the sugar off the table. That’s what we’re doing,” he told reporters. “We’re trying to stop people thinking that it’s OK to come into Indonesia and use that as a waiting ground to get to Australia.” The giant northern neighbour is not a refugee generating country, but has become a key
Scott Morrison is taking the ‘sugar off the table’. magnet for others seeking to reach Australia, often through treacherous boat journeys that have left hundreds dead. Since the government came to power last year, its hardline immigration policy – to deny asylum-seekers arriving by boat resettlement in Australia and instead send them to camps in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific state of Nauru – has halted the flow. lum-seekers to Indonesia and encourage them to seek resettlement in or from countries of first asylum.” Morrison said Jakarta had been briefed on the development and insisted that Australia continued to support the UN refugee convention. “We do support the convention,” he said. “But what we don’t support is how that convention
is abused by smugglers who try and leverage people into Australia through whatever means they can.” The Australian Greens said it was a cruel decision that would especially affect refugees fleeing from Iraq and Afghanistan. “It’s appalling ... and cruelty writ large,” Greens leader Christine Milne said, while her colleague Sarah Hanson-Young
called the move “pure arrogance” from the government. “It’s the exact opposite to what Australia should be doing,” she said, adding that it raised fears that asylum-seekers in Indonesia would now be encouraged to risk longer boat journeys to countries such as New Zealand. “This is Australia saying we don’t give a damn about these people,” she said. Deaths spotlight India drug safety record T H E D E AT H S O F 13 Indian women allegedly given tainted antibiotics after undergoing sterilisation surgery have raised fresh questions about India’s drug industry, already under international scrutiny over its troubled safety record. Losses from Yingluck rice scheme ‘as high as B750bn’ LOSSES FROM THE PHEU Thai government’s rice pledging scheme could be as high as B750 billion, according to a study by Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Economy. The study also found that the farmers who were supposed to benefit from the scheme – which allowed them sell crops in advance at prices far above the market rate – did not in fact benefit that much. The study found that the average amount garnered by participating farmers was less
than B1,000 more than the money made by farmers who did not join in the scheme. It described the scheme “extremely not worth the budget spent” because the taxpayer is likely to end up covering the losses of between B540 and B750 billion incurred by the B985 billion scheme. In addition, farmers who took part did not use the additional income to improve their production capacity – one stated aim of the rice pledging scheme.

Thailand ‘erects barriers to AEC’ Alasdair Forbes execeditor@classactmedia.co.th
M The big white Pegas buses are a constant feature of Phuket’s landscape these days.
Pegas targets 25,000 Kazakhstan tourists WITH RUSSIAN NUMBERS sliding, more tourists from the central Asian state of Kazakhstan are to be brought into Phuket by tour giant Pegas. “This is not a first time tourists from Kazakhstan have come to Phuket [with us], so it is not hard for us to bring more in,” Baki Colpan, the Reservation and Contracting Manager of Pegas Thailand told The Phuket News. But in the past, he explained, it was hard to get a connection from Kazakhstan to Phuket – there were no direct flights. Now, however, Pegas has begun charter operations from the capital Almaty, with a flight time of seven hours to Phuket. On December 25 it will also begin direct charter flights every 10 days from Kazakhstan’s second city, Astana, to Bangkok. Starting from the end of last month, Pegas expects to bring about 4,500 to 5,000 pas-
sengers a month from Almaty. “We estimate about 25,000 to 30,000 people coming to Thailand by the end of 2015,” Mr Colpan said. Kazakhstan is the wealthiest country in Central Asia, thanks mainly to large oil reserves. Its economy has grown at an annual rate of 8 per cent for the past decade. Pegas also has plans to launch a corporate social responsibility (CSR) drive to connect the firm more closely with the Phuket community. “Our company is big, so it’s little wonder that people notice us. To some we might look like ‘mafia’ as we operate all over the island; our logo is easy to spot,” said Nikorn Yatinunt, a consultant to Pegas Thailand. “We just met with Governor Nisit Jansomwong on Tuesday (November 11) to talk about what we can do to support Phuket. [His response] will then help to inspire our CSR program.” he said.

uch of the hype in Thailand about the country’s giant steps towards the Asean Economic Community, which comes into being at the end of next year, is just that – hype. The reality is that Thailand is dragging its feet. That was the message in a presentation by one of the country’s top economists last Friday (November 14) at a dinner organised at the Amari Phuket Resort in Patong by the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand. Dr Kirida Baopichitr, senior economist for Thailand at the World Bank, explained that when it came to goods, Thailand is already doing well in terms of compliance, but services – which comprise by far the largest part of business in Phuket – are a different matter altogether. Only the Philippines and Indonesia had erected higher walls of non-tariff barriers to services, she said. “Thais are still very protective,” she said. “They are worried about competition.” The World Bank’s Services Trade Restrictiveness Index, she explained, shows a world average of 29 (the lower the number, the more open a country is). Thailand
World Bank economist Dr Kirida Baopichitr: ‘We should be in the lead, not following.’ scores 48, Indonesia 50 and the Philippines 53. In contrast, Thailand’s neighbour Cambodia, with a score of 24, is much more likely to accept foreign involvement in services – and to reap the benefits. An example, she explained, is the barriers being erected thanks to lobbying from professional associations. “Thailand should be welcoming professionals. Welcoming talent [such as doctors from other Asean countries] would improve life for Thais.” Instead, however, anyone from an Asean country wanting to practice medicine in Thailand must pass the relevant exams – in Thai.
She also noted that, unlike Europe, there is no sign of the AEC having a central body to crack the whip. “I’m not hopeful that there will be a superbody that can sanction countries that don’t follow the [AEC] rules,” she said. As a result, companies in services in Thailand are unlikely to face a rise in competition from Asean rivals any time soon, as Thailand drags its feet. Dr Kirida thinks that in the long run this is a bad thing. “We should be in the lead,” she said, “not following other countries.” One aspect of the coming of the AEC, however, could
gladden the hearts of foreigners in business in Thailand. The proposed tightening of the Foreign Business Act to close loopholes allowing minority foreign shareholders to control companies has caused considerable concern in Phuket. One way around this is offered by the AEC which will allow companies or individuals from other Asean countries to own 70 per cent of a business in Thailand (and vice-versa). Whether the many who fear the coming of the AEC will find a way to erect barriers against this development, too, remains to be seen. Class Act Media was a cosponsor of the event.

T Continental concert: When legendary metal band Metallica performed at Carlini Station in Antarctica in December 2013, they officially became the “first musical act to perform a concert on every continent on the planet”. The band performed an hour-long set of ten songs in front of 120 scientists and competition winners in a transparent dome that is accesible only by air and water. The band also managed to perform on every continent within the year, a tour that began in North America in early 2013. Oldest gymnast: The “world’s oldest gymnast” is much better at doing things than most 20-year-olds. Johanna Quaas was born in 1925 in Germany and has lived through World War II, the fall of the Berlin Wall and seen the German national team win all four World Cups. In 2013, she performed a floor-and-beam routine on the set of Lo Show dei Record in Rome, Italy to be named the world’s oldest gymnast in history. Fastest Toilet: Colin Furze, a plumber and st unt man k now n for quirky and inventive YouTube videos, fashioned a fully-functioning toilet out of a powerful 140cc motorbike engine – which was hidden under the toilet seat. Furze smashed the previous record of 68kph with his 88.5kph porcelain throne, which he spent a month building. The toilet was even filled with water during the March 2013 demonstration and can be flushed while on the move. Strongest tongue: Lifting 12.5 kg is not a big deal, unless you do it with your tongue. Thomas Blackthorne lifted that weight with the strongest muscle in the body and set a world record back on August 1, 2008. He set the record in front of a studio audience on the set of El Show Olimpico in Mexico City. The Englishman lifted the weight using a pulley that was tied onto the weight at one end and hooked through – yes, through – his tongue at the other end. The world hasn’t been the same since. What’s in the suitcase?: It only took Leslie Topton of the United States 5.43 seconds to stuff herself into a suitcase. She performed the feat in front of a studio audience in New York City on LIVE! With Regis & Kelly morning television show back on September 14, 2008. The suitcase was fully-zipped by the TV hosts. Before the show, Tipton’s personal-best was 7 seconds but the professional contortionist was still able to break the record on live television.

him I realised how tiny he was,” Kosen told AFP. He said meeting Chandra was “amazing”, although he admitted bending the long, long way down for photographs was difficult. “I do have problems with my knees so if I stand too long I do get tired,” he said. Kosen added: “Even though he is short and I am tall, we have had similar struggles throughout our lives and when I look into Chandra’s eyes I can see he is a good man.” Meanwhile Dangi, a primordial dwarf who makes placemats, is the shortest adult ever certified by Guinness World Records. “I was very pleased to see the tallest man in the world, I was curious to meet my extreme opposite,” he said. Giant python outgrows Swiss home, handed over to zoo
Woman rises from the dead in Polish morgue A 91-YEAR-OLD POLISH woman surprised morgue workers when she started moving, 11 hours after being declared dead at home, public television reported last week. Janina Kolkiewicz woke up inside a body bag in a cold chamber at the morgue in eastern Poland last Thursday (November 13), according to the TVP public broadcaster. “I was sure she was dead,” doctor Wieslawa Czyz told TVP. “I’m stunned, I don’t
understand what happened. Her heart had stopped beating, she was no longer breathing,” she said. “My aunt has no inkling of what happened since she has late-stage dementia,” Bogumila Kolkiewicz, the woman’s niece, told a local newspaper. “Once we got her home, she said she was freezing and asked for a hot cup of tea.” Police have opened an investigation into the incident. A PYTHON SMUGGLED from Vietnam to Switzerland as a baby has been handed to a Swiss zoo after outgrowing the private home it has lived in for two decades. The nonvenomous reptile, which 20 years ago fit inside the trouser leg of a Swiss boy returning home from a holiday with his mother in Vietnam, today measures five metres (16 feet) and weighs 80 kilos (180 pounds), according to the Garenne zoo in western Switzerland. The boy was caught with the snake, named Samy, when entering Switzerland, but was allowed to keep it after paying a fine, animal keeper Julien Regamey told the ATS news agency. The boy took care of Samy
for the next decade before his mother took over the care for another 10 years. “The snake had a whole room in the house to itself,” Regamey said. No longer in a position to care for the python, which can live to the age of 50 years and grow to eight metres, the family decided to hand the animal over to the zoo. Garenne zoo said it was keeping Samy temporarily while a special vivarium was being built to house him in nearby Saint-Cergue. AFP
Wacky Guinness World Records Day 2014 AROUND THE WORLD, participants were having a go at setting all sorts of weird and wacky new world records for the 10th annual Guinness World Records Day on November 13. NBC weatherman Al Roker was attempting the longest uninterrupted live weather report, with only a five-minute break per hour permitted. He was still going strong more than 14 hours in. At the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris, dancers set a new benchmark for the “most simultaneous demi-grand rond de jambe cancan kicks by a single chorus line in 30 seconds” with a total of 29.
Frenchman Nicolas Pihiliangegedara also secured the record for most spinning splits in 30 seconds with 36, while Greece’s Adonis Kosmadakis got his leg behind his head 30 times in 30 seconds. In Arizona, Harlem Globetrotters star Thunder Law set a record for the farthest basketball shot made backwards, netting from 25 metres. It didn’t even touch the backboard.
In Japan, 19-year-old Katsumi Tamakoshi set a record for fastest 100 metres on all fours, finishing in 15.86 seconds. In Armidale in Australia, 320 pupils rocked their way into the record books for the most people headbanging simultaneously, thrashing out to AC/DC’s track It’s A Long Way To The Top. And Anthony Kelly added yet another world record to his
list: most spears caught from a spear gun underwater, catching 10 in a minute. Meanwhile the record for the most people eating breakfast in bed went to 388 people at Shanghai’s Pudong Shangri-La hotel, spread across 202 beds in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom. In Taiwan, record-breakers cooked up the largest-ever rice mosaic, measuring 1,798 square metres. AFP thephuketnews

The Good Shepherd Christmas Market offers festive family fun
T
he Good Shepherd Phuket organising committee are holding their fourth annual Christmas Market on December 6, where guests can enjoy a mixture of magic shows, face painting, and make a special visit Santa’s grotto. The Christmas Market will be held in the Plaza del Mar courtyard, behind Bake in Cherng Talay, 11am – 5pm. Guests can reserve tables for B500 but there is limited availability. This year promises to be fabulous following on from last year, the most successful event to date for The Good Shepherd Phuket. Entertainment also includes, clowns & balloons, cookie decorating and a host of prizes to be won, making it a fun day out for the entire family. All table fees will benefit The Good Shepherd’s School in Ban Ya, which provides a Learning Centre to give Burmese children an education and hopefully empower them to return to their home country to be productive members of society. The original Bang Jo school was set up in 2010 by the Rohmonya Labour UnionOperation Learning Centre Projects based in Ranong. Parents living near the construction worker camps in Bang Jo, Thalang, requested that a Burmese Learning Centre be built so their children could receive an equivalent education to that of which they would receive in their home country. The children are taught English, Maths, Social Studies, Dance, History, Science and Burmese reading and writing. The school started off with just 30 students and two teachers but in early June the BanYa Learning Centre was launched in a new facility to accommodate the 60+ students and four teachers. As of November, the school had reached 78 students, 50 per cent female and 50 per cent male, ranging between 4 and 14 years old. Class Act Media are co-sponsors of the event. The art of pole dancing in Phuket Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
D
ancing is a form of performance art which can empower the dancer and make them feel alive. These days there is an array of classes available, from zumba to hip hop to jazz. Pole dancing in particular, has become quite the popular choice particularly as a form of fitness, practiced by many enthusiasts in gyms and dance studios. It’s an exotic form of dancing historically associated with strip clubs and night clubs, which combines dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical burlesque pole. It requires a significant amount of strength, flexibility and endurance and professionals use athletics moves such as climbs, spins and body inversions using their limbs to grip the pole. Anchalee (May) Sevidov and Jenny Liebert are the owners of Pole Dance Phuket which is the first pole dancing school to open in Patong, Phuket. I walked into the sports studio and Ms Anchaelee, Jenny and a student were all training away and they looked incredibly fit and toned. Jenny was teaching one of her students, and as they were moving their bodies around the pole, I couldn’t believe how well they could do it. I was mesmerised by their talents. Their movements were stunning and the shapes they were creating gave the

illusion of butterflies spiralling around in circles. Ms Anchalee walked towards me and I couldn’t help but ask her what would happen if the pole broke, to which she responded with a smile, “All the poles were bought from the USA and they are excellent quality. So, don’t worry about them breaking.” Ms Anchalee explained that pole dancing is not very well known to the locals here and because of its history, most people still associate it with being a provocative “sexual show”. “Pole dancing is much more sporty – it’s an acrobatic exercise but with a pole,” Ms Anchalee said. She then showed me her hands and they appeared quite rough, probably from years of working with the poles. She said, “I used to worry that my hands were not very ladylike, but now I don’t worry so much as I just enjoy pole dancing. I am proud of it. The bruised marks on our bodies, such as on the neck, legs and arms, are known as ‘pole kisses’”. One of the other students I came across said, “Pole dancing is a different type of movement. It’s a form of exercise that is acrobatic. It might take time to practice but I get excited about fun fitness!” Ms Anchalee said, “Sometimes people ask me how much they will need to learn. I say, “Pole dancing is never ending, there are so many things to learn and enjoy.” Ms Jenny said, “It’s such a great way to exercise, you can learn a lot from it.
It’s all about building the confidence of each person and not worrying about your weight. “And it’s not just for women. Sometimes we have men in the classes who want to learn too. In fact, all men can do it. Their bodies will get more toned because they’ll be exercising every muscle in their body. One of my friends does it and he is a ‘real’ man. “So, both men and women can look and feel sexy”, she added. Ms Anchalee said, “It’s great to be able to say that we are the first studio to have opened in Phuket.”
Pole Dance Phuket is open every day, 9.00am – 9.00 pm. For more information call 092 832 0802 or vist facebook. com/pages: Pole-Dancing-School-Phuket, www.poledanceschoolphuket.com

Who robbed the coucals? GARDEN IN SIAM

W
e have a pair of Greater Coucals in the garden. They’ve tried many times to raise young, but without success. For some reason they seem to favour a stand of Buddha bamboo right in front of the house. It should be ideal – the bamboo is very dense and although it won’t keep snakes out, it deters our cats. But over a few days we came across three eggs on the ground below, breached and emptied. It was a bit of a mystery. If a snake, say, or a rat had eaten the eggs, you’d expect to find nothing left. They’d
A be swallowed whole. But each of these eggs had a ragged hole that looked as though something might have nibbled it. One of them also had three pin-sized holes elsewhere in the shell. The coucals seem to have given up on the nest. We wondered whether the culprit might be our favourite insect – the Asian Giant Hornet. One of these has started on a nest in the same stand of bamboos. I thought I’d ask for an expert opinion. I contacted Associate Professor Paitoon Leksawasdi, an entomologist at Chiang Mai University. His reply was swift and pretty conclusive: “Looking at your picture of the egg , there is a big hole. I think that it was more likely caused by a squirrel than by falling from the nest. The pin holes you mention in one of the eggs would not have been caused by a hornet. Their biting mouth parts would have made a bigger hole. “Usually hornets eat caterpillars and other living things. I have never heard of one piercing and sucking birds’ eggs.” So it was most likely squirrels. Thanks, Prof.

s you enter your kitchen or porch, you are startled by the sight of something ferocious scurrying along the floor – it’s a crab, no a spider, a very big spider! This one is distinct from the dozens of other cellar spiders (Pholcus phalangioides) peacefully minding their webs nearby. Easily the size of your hand if not bigger by the end of its twoyear life span, this gigantic arachnid is brown and it’s on the prowl – it needs to be, for it has no web to catch its prey. The huntsman (of the Sparassoidea superfamily) is common in this neck of the woods. In fact the largest spider in the world is from this family, and lives in Laos (Heteropoda maxima), where it can grow up to a foot in diameter! Here in Phuket, the sparassoidea will only get to half that size, but that doesn’t make it any less scary. In Thai, it’s known as the ‘Mang Moom Ka Yao Baan’ – literally the longlegged house spider. Dwelling in forests, the spider is known to seek shelter and hunt for food inside pest- and dust-rich homes, thriving all around the warm world. Common in Australia and Southeast Asia, the huntsman, which is also known as the crab spider, has jumped on ships and spread across the planet. While its bite may prove fatal for old, young or weak humans, it generally will not pursue larger predators, and will try to avoid you, unless you corner it and leave it with no other option. It does, however, offer other household benefits, its favourite meal being large pests, and in particular, cockroaches. Clean crops for climate change THE GLOBAL SCALE
E
nvironmental activist organization Greenpeace has called on the science community to step up its support for ecological food production to build resilient agriculture that can meet the threat posed by climate change and ensure food diversity and nutrition security. The call was made at the 4th International Rice Congress (IRC) held recently in Bangkok. Highlighting the role of non-genetically modified (GM) plant breeding technologies in producing new rice strains that can adapt to extreme and changing climate conditions, Dr. Janet Cotter, Senior Scientist at Greenpeace International’s Science Unit, said: “The International Rice Congress, a regular scientific meeting that gathers rice industry players, is tremendously important for the future of rice. It’s amazing to see so many rice traits, such as drought-tolerant and increased yield varieties, being developed through marker-assisted conventional breeding. What’s needed now is to put these traits into varieties suitable for low-input, ecological agriculture to ensure the sustainability of rice farming, and to increase its resilience to climate change.” Cotter said that in times of extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and typhoons, communities need resilient agriculture that will continue to provide food and meet their nutritional
Since Thailand is the world’s largest rice exporter, any/all developments in biotechnology will have great implications on the economy. Photo: Takeaway needs. It remains difficult, however, to predict when droughts or floods will occur and while plant breeding can provide climate tolerant varieties, farmers do not always know which variety to plant. Cotter added, “diversity holds the key to climate change resilient farming by providing an insurance policy against the impacts of extreme weather.” In Thailand, the debate on GM crops was sparked again on October 21, just a few days prior to the IRC, when the country’s Supreme Administrative Court dismissed a case filed by Greenpeace against the Department of Agriculture for negligence in the management of the department’s GM papaya field trials in Khon Kaen province in 2004. Highlighting concerns among Thailand’s farming communities about GM contamination of papaya, Kingkorn Narintarakul Na Ayuthaya of BioThai

Foundation warned that field trials of other GM crops are likely to happen following the Supreme Administrative Court decision. She added, “the evidence of GM contamination on our crops such as papaya is already impacting our ability to export to other countries.” “As one of the world’s largest exporters of rice, Thailand faces heavy economic losses if field trials of GM crops will be allowed by the present government. We must stand guard and protect our rice diversity and protect farmers’ rights in the face of large corporate monopolies over seeds. “Thailand should retain its edge as a country that has GM-free food exports.
The government needs to carefully consider its position on the issue,” Kingkorn Narintarakul Na Ayuthaya said. Daniel Ocampo, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Ecological Agriculture Campaigner, said solutions to food insecurity and nutritional deficiencies are already available; including the fortification of food, Vitamin A supplementation, and diet diversification sourced from ecological agriculture. These solutions should be supported through policies that will enable farmers and the industry to pursue ecological agriculture instead of the illusion of GM crops, which will only divert resources away from solutions already available, Ocampo said. “Aside from resilience to climate change, ecological agriculture ensures ecological diversity and can be a source of diverse diets that assures a healthier source of nutrients for people,” Ocampo said. Despite the interests of some industry members in producing new GM rice strains Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) is by far ahead of any GM rice being developed. Several rice varieties developed through MAS are already helping farmers cope with abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity. Unlike genetic engineering, crops produced through MAS do not present risks to farmers or traders resulting from GM contamination.

I
t is argued that the modern world today presents an unrealistic idea of beauty. The kinds of women you see in magazines, TV shows are usually slim petite girls. However, many famous models are actually in fact underweight. Of course, some women are naturally quite thin but there are also many who suffer from anorexia. For example, according to the Renfrew Centre Foundation for Eating Disorders, in the USA up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder). It’s quite easy for a woman to feel uneasy and anxious about her figure when comparing it to say, a cover of a Cosmopolitan magazine. Some scientists argue that a person’s body image and self-esteem can dramatically decrease after looking at various photos in magazines. The beauty of Renaissance marble sculptures, the curvy shape of Marilyn Monroe and various other pin-up models, evidentially are far from being a bag of bones. Some argue that if they are not remotely close to the ‘ideal’ figure represented in the media, they develop bad body thoughts. It is not uncommon to test out the most popular
Marilyn Monroe. diets going around, and no one is denying that many of them actually have an effect. Whether you cut carbs, meat or all you do is eat dark chocolate, you will probably lose several kilos. However, the question is: why do the kilos keep returning? And why do we gain even more weight after? Any diet has the potential to cause problems, see below for the following reasons: We try to solve problems which a diet is simply unable to solve. For example, self-esteem. I might believe that I will suddenly be more attractive and confident when I lose weight. But in fact, self-esteem is not just about the number you see on the scale. You won’t necessarily be more confident, especially if your job requires more creativity or knowledge than you already have. We resort to eating when we feel anxious, upset, angry, bored or tired. We eat when we actually want to drink or sleep. All of these facts coincide with an eating disorder, because they link to binge-eating, compulsive-eating and many other problems. Every second girl in a metropolitan city has some sort of eating disorder. Whether it’s their determination to go to the gym five times
a week, or completely starve themself – these are not stable actions. Plus, they could easily lose motivation. When we don’t give our bodies enough nutrition, our metabolism slows down and we don’t digest properly. Our body turns to safety mode and stores all nutrients in case of complete starvation. By the time we start to eat properly, the body tries to store everything in case it happens again. So, we can get even bigger than we were. Inner beauty comes from living in harmony and being content with your body, don’t overeat but don’t starve yourself either. You should eat just enough that satisfies you and also remember to enjoy eating! At Santosa Detox Centre we educate people how to detox. The main goal is to re-establish the connection you have with yourself, heal physically and emotionally. We recommend detox as a way of cleansing the body, not for losing weight. It is a way of taking care of the body on a regular basis, just as you would schedule to maintenance your car. After the fast you will feel more connected to nature, your sense of taste will be sharp, and you will understand the true needs of your body better.
Natural birth in Phuket? QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Phuket for Kids
Question: I have been living in Phuket for over two years now. I am planning to have my first baby here in Phuket in May. I would really like to have a natural birth but am concerned that it is not the first choice in Thai hospitals here. Is there any advice you could give me? Do you know of any midwives in Phuket that could help? The birth is a long way off yet but I’d like to be as prepared as possible. Many thanks Answer: Well, I usually get questions concerning keeping kids busy not bringing
them into the world – but let me try. The international hospitals are more understanding regarding women’s individual birth plans. However at the time of writing this there are no birthing classes as prevalent in western countries. Doctors will be your primary contact, not nurses or midwives. Midwives in western countries are often highly trained which may not be the case in Thailand. However you can have a natural birth in Phuket and many have (including me). Some top tips: Read as much as you can about birthing and begin writing a birth plan. Start talking to your doctor ‘now’ about aspects of your birth plan- you will both become frustrated if
your doctor discovers your intentions only prior to the birth. Ensure your partner is on board as you will need the support of your partner in the birthing room. And remember, your doctor is a qualified medical practitioner and the main priority is to ensure you and your baby are safe. Take their advice but don’t be afraid to get a second opinion! Join a social media network on the island and meet other women who can share advice. If anyone has some more practical advice please contact me: info@phuketforkids. com so this information can be shared! thephuketnews

N
atalya Yakovleva’s husband and daughter could be the most well-fed farang family in Phuket. “Everyday I wake up and think ‘what can I cook today?’. I always start with pancake first, then maybe some other breakfast,” the Vladivostok native told The Phuket News. Natalya’s pancakes are just one of the many options at MIX Restaurant, a small Russian-Ukiranian enclave just a short walk from Kamala Beach. Aside from two dishes, this was my first time tasting Russian food and was intended to be a culinary tour around the biggest country on earth. By the end of it, I was rolling out of the restaurant on my stomach. First, we were treated to an assortment of Zakúski, appetizers including fermented and/or salted vegetables like cabbage and mushrooms, usually accompanied with vodka. Zakúski, as Novosti Phuketa Editor and dining-mate Daria Manina told me, is usually eaten as an accompaniment with strong drinks – it certainly soaks up our drink. We were also bombarded with a plate of Pirogí, small pies that were stuffed with onions, eggs and cabbage. Next up, our waitress walked out with three different soups: the traditional beetroot-laden Bórsche, a tasty soup of salted cabbage called She, and – the star of the show – Rassólnik. This last soup was my favourite and consisted of salted cucumber, potatoes, onion, chunks of pork and rice oats. For someone who loves a simple bowl of warm, hearty soup, I can order
Golubtsý.
Rassólnik and call it a day. But the night was young and we had much more space in our bellies. Natalya, who’s been cooking since age 6, was up to the challenge and helped bring out a plate of Daria’s favourite dish: Golubtsý. Don’t judge a book by its cover because Golubtsý – a simple meal of rice and meat stuffed inside two rolled up pieces of cabbage leaves – is not only tasty, but also filling and healthy. During dinner, we learned that Natalya first arrived to Phuket on holiday three years ago with her husband. After two weeks, the pair decided to move to the island and brought their young daughter. The restaurant opened just months later and for over two years, Natalya’s menu for the yet-to-be-named restaurant was full of Western food. Until one day, a group of Russian tourists walked in. “They asked me if I had Russian food. I told them I cook only for my family but I could serve to them,” Natalya said. “From there people kept coming for this and we changed everything and gave the restaurant the name MIX.
Hailing from Vladivostok in the Far East part of Russia, some Chinese influences have crept onto the table. One of those influences include dumplings and Pelmeni, Russian-style dumplings, is the result. Filled with beef, pork, onion and garlic, Pelmeni easily became my favourite Russian dish, hands down. It’s bursting with flavour, small yet
filling, and generously meaty. This was when Natalya informed us that her Italian friends, many of whom are chefs at five-star resorts on the island, make their way to MIX just for her Pelmeni. In fact, the day before, she sold three kgs of Pelmeni to a German family. After a helping of Turtle Tort (eightlayer cake) and her famous pancakes (similar to crepes), Natalya sent us packing with a large Piróg stuffed with tuna and cabbage. It was up to us how small we were to cut this large pie. “Cut it very small, it’s the small stuff that is popular,” she said.
MIX restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday, 2pm to 12am. Located at 86/15 Rim Haad, Kamala, Phuket 83150. Visit their Facebook page: MIX Kamala.

Yeng Keng Hotel in Georgetown, a two-storey building with 20 rooms, dates back to the 19th century.
Exploring the heritage of Penang, Malaysia Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th
P
enang in Malaysia has many similarities to Phuket. The island is known for its natural beauty and unique cultural heritage, which has earned it the name, ‘Pearl of the Orient’. Penang is a popular destination for foreigners applying for
Thai visa extensions. Malaysian airline Firefly operates direct flights between Penang and Phuket several times a week. As well as jungles, lakes and beaches, Penang has a rich colonial heritage, which can be clearly seen in the architecture of old buildings. Georgetown, the capital of Penang, is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and there is a lot to see among the atmospheric Chinese store fronts and imposing mansions dotted
around town. In Georgetown you’ll find amazing murals painted by Ernest Zacheravic. There’s one on Armenian Street depicting two children on bicycles. This one is a must-see (pictured, top left). Take a photo and post it on social media to let everyone know you’ve arrived. Staying at the Yeng Keng Hotel is recommended to really experience Georgetown’s heritage. Dating back to the 19th century, the two-story building with 20 rooms is one of the oldest buildings in town that is still intact. Originally built in the mid 1800’s as a private residence, the building was upgraded by current owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd in March 2009, and re-opened as the Yeng Keng Hotel in April 2010. Kek Lok Si Temple is a well-known land mark and a supremely blissful place. It is one of the biggest temples in South East Asia and millions of people go there to see the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin). From a Phuketian’s perspective, Penang and Phuket share many similarities but the variety of food in Penang is distinctly different, offering a mixture of Chinese, Nyonya, Malay and Indian delicacies from the numerous street stalls. Recommended dishes are Chinese noodles (Char Kuay Teow); Assam Laksa (sour fish soup) and Rojak, (a fruit and vegetable salad with Indonesian origins).
On the beverage front, Leng tea is a highly recommended healthy Chinese herbal brew available from many drink vendors. The mixed culture of Penang’s inhabitants means there are many different places of worship for various faiths. As well as Christian churches there are Buddhist and Indian temples and of course, magnificent mosques. One gem I discovered during my short trip was an old incense stick maker working in his shop, Lee Jossstick, located on Soi Lorong Muda, behind Guan Im Teng Shrine on Harmony Road. The 80-year-old shop owner, Mr Lee Beng Chuan, runs the business alone and makes his joss sticks by hand. He didn’t speak English but smiled all the time. He makes joss sticks in a variety of styles, priced from MYR7 to MYR12 per pack. Of course I bought some and took them home. The fragrance was wonderful and revived good memories of a brief but fun trip.

Discover a local gem
P
huket offers a growing number of themed parks, beach clubs, shopping malls and hotel pools where families can spend a relaxing day. Recently I re-discovered a more authentic location in Pa Khlok. The area of Pa Khlok is delightful and although centrally located, the ambience is that of Phuket twenty years back…in a good way! Make a day of it and wander down to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. The location of the gibbons will depend upon where they are in their release programme, but on the day I was there I could certainly see and hear gibbons in the tree tops. Knowledgeable volunteers (from around the world) assisted with questions and information about the project. You can continue on through the national park and walk to the The Bang Pae waterfall. Photo Jeff Gunn Bang Pae waterfall. I would recommend good walking shoes. Then head back to lunch at the delightful Peang Prai Resort Restaurant. The restaurant design is reminiscent of a tree house with scrumptiously local flavoured food (with local prices). There is a small path around a of an elephant at the Bang Pae Elephant Safari. All very close to the lake where children can skate or roller blade. Finish off on the back Heroines Monument, with a short
drive between each venue. Peang Prai Restaurant 101/18 Bang-Pea Waterfall Paklok, Thalang Phuket. Question for Phuket for Kids Hi, we are thinking of coming to Phuket. We have one-year-old twins and a five-year-old boy. Where do you think is the most child-friendly place to stay?
Answer: I cannot comment on individual hotels but most hotels will state if they are family-oriented. As a guide you could check certain criteria to see if the hotel truly is family friendly: Do they have a ‘Kids’ Club’? Does the hotel offer babysitting services? Do they have a kids’ pool? Do the restaurants have kids’ menus? Some hotels target the family market and will promote families in their marketing. One such group of hotels is Laguna Resorts which are predominately aimed at families. Hope this helps. If you have further advice on kidfriendly resorts please contact me at info@phuketforkids.com so this information can be shared! Check out www.phuketforkids. com And buy the book.

China researchers plan Mars mission ‘around 2020’
C
hinese scientists are planning to launch a Mars rover “around 2020”, state media reported last Tuesday (November 18), as the country pours billions into its space programme and works to catch up with the US and Europe. Although the government has not officially announced plans for a Mars mission, officials from the China National Space Administration are currently lobbying to have it put on the agenda and have begun “preliminary research”, the staterun China Daily reported. “We plan to conduct the Mars mission around 2020, which will include the probe’s orbiting, landing and roaming,” Peng Tao, a space expert with the China Academy of Space Technology, was quoted by China Daily as saying. “By contrast, other nations will need multiple missions to achieve those three steps.” The statements came less than a week after prototypes for the Mars rover were
debuted at the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. China’s recent space efforts have been focused on exploring the moon. The nation’s first lunar rover – the Yutu, or Jade Rabbit – was launched late last year, but it has since been beset by mechanical troubles. The planned Mars rover will be bigger than the Yutu in order to deal with the harsher terrain, China Daily quoted space officials as saying. Scientists are now focused on sending a manned mission to the moon and returning samples safely back to Earth. The US has landed two rovers on Mars and India successfully put a satellite into orbit around the red planet in September. The former Soviet Union and the European Space Agency have also sent missions to Mars. China’s first attempt to send a satellite into Mars orbit foundered in 2011 when the Russian rocket carrying the payload failed to make it out of the Earth’s orbit. AFP

Toyota rolls out world’s first mass market fuel-cell car
T
oyota said it would start selling the world’s first mass market fuel-cell car in Japan next month in what a top executive called an industry milestone. The four-door Mirai sedan, powered by hydrogen and emitting nothing but water vapour from its tailpipe, will launch with a price tag of 6.7 million yen ($57,500) in Japan. The car will arrive in the US and Europe in 2015. The Mirai can travel about 650 km without refuelling, three times further than an electric car, and its tank can be filled in a few minutes like gasoline engine vehicles. “We are at a turning point in the automotive industry,” Toyota chief executive Akio Toyoda said in a video message on the company’s website.
R
emember all those Atari videogames that were buried in a landfill in New Mexico in 1983 only to be dug up during the filming of a documentary earlier this year? Bidders all around the world paid a total of US$37,000 for them – yes, really. The games, many of which included Centipede, Missile Commando and, of one of the worst titles in the history of gaming, E.T., were owned by the City of Alamogordo. The municipality sold an initial wave of 100 excavated games on the auctioning website eBay, with prices that reached as high as US$1,500 for just one title. The games are now headed for destinations across the globe, including Sweden, Germany and Ecuador. “It’s really gratifying to see that happening because again to everybody it was a bunch of garbage in the landfill. You’re kind of nutty to go dig it up,”
said Joe Lewandowski, Vice President of the Tularosa Basin Historical Society, the organisation that handled the sale of the excavated games. The organisation still has
more than 700 games to sell in the coming weeks and it is unclear what the city plan to do with the funds from the sales. The games were initially dumped in a landfill just inside the city limits back in 1983 after the failure of the E.T. movie tiein game. Atari had too many unsold copies of the game and, along with several other titles, buried them. A documentary film, Atari: Game Over, released just yesterday (November 20), chronicles the entire collapse of the first popular console and the subsequent uncovering of the landfill.

IN BRIEF NYC goes Wi-fi, no pay phones
Thousands of high-tech terminals offering free WiFi and other services will soon replace New York’s remaining fleet of seldom-used pay phones. Mayor Bill de Blasio called the “LinkNYC” system “the fastest and largest municipal WiFi network in the world.” Up to 10,000 terminals will provide free Internet access up to 45 meters from hubs, which will be phased in beginning in 2015. Free domestic phone calls can also be made from the stations, which will be financed by digital advertising displays “at no cost to taxpayers,” de Blasio said. Terminals will feature a touchscreen interface, a cell phone and tablet charging station, and provide access to emergency services. AFP
Snapchat adds money transfer feature
Thanks to a partnership with mobile payments company Square, Snapchat has added a feature called “Snapcash” that lets users send cash directly to a friend’s bank account. While users have to use Square to receive the money, Snapchatters who want to send money only have to add their debit card information to the app. This is a first for both Snapchat and Square as the latter company have never offered its payments inside another app. For now, Snapcash is only available for users in the United States though plans for a worldwide version is in the works.
A new Facebook for the office?
A report in the Financial Times says that Facebook is currently buliding a network for professionals to connect and collaborate that would be kept separate from the personal profiles. “Facebook at Work”, the product would look similar to the current social network but would allow workers to chat with colleagues, build professional networks and share documents. The product is currently being used internally at Facebook already and would be a direct competitor of LinkedIn. thephuketnews

INTERSTELLAR
Director: Christopher Nolan,
C
hristopher Nolan’s cosmic adventure is dazzling, but too literal-minded — and, man, is it long. True to form, Nolan’s film will nudge his fans into the core of delectable bafflement and science-bending construct (What happens inside the wormhole? What does it look like when you fold time?). And the spectacle — the dust-covered Midwest, the extraterrestrial calamity, the view of a cosmic maelstrom and the black hole — presents a bold vision from the pensive professor of the Hollywood factory. Going cerebral while grinding the emotional is Nolan’s trademark. His serious tone is massaged on the most abstract themes: the meaning of memory in Memento, the layers of dreams in Inception and the oceanic, black, beauty of the unknown — deep space — in Interstellar. Lathered on them, sometimes, is a Shakespearean labyrinth of anxieties, as in The Dark Knight. In a not-too-distant future, when Earth is nearly spent, dust covers everything and the “caretaker population” — at least in the US — farms corn to feed the dwindling human race. Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), is an ex-pilot/engineer who’s reduced to an agricultural existence, and frustrated that his abilities mean nothing in a dying world. Cooper has a son, Tom (who grows up to be played by Casey Affleck), and Murph (first the brilliant Mackenzie Foy and later Jessica Chastain). When Cooper deciphers a mysterious binary code on his daughter’s bedroom floor — this is just one of the geek-speak deluges that messes with you throughout the film — he joins the now-clandestine Nasa, led by Dr Brand (Michael Caine). Soon Cooper and Brand’s daughter Amelia (Anne Hathaway) are blasted off into space

J u l ia Ro b e r t s , Clooney team up for Jodi Foster
Jodi Foster’s directorial debut Money Monster is set to include Julia Roberts and George Clooney in a film dubbed as a “financial hostage thriller”. Clooney will play Les Gates, a loud and gregarious financial TV host while Roberts portrays the director and executive producer of the show, Nancy Fenn. Jack O’Connell (Starred up; This is England) is set to play a blue collar worker sick of the damage done by Wall Street, who takes Gates hostage on air. The film is set to shoot next year after Roberts completes work on an adaptation of Argentine thriller The Secret in Their Eyes.
Fast and Furious: three more times
to search for a habitable planet that will be mankind’s new home. Cooper’s anxiety isn’t about finding a new interstellar home, but coming back to his daughter, who nurses a grudge against him for leaving her on what seems to be a suicide mission. The Nolans (Christopher directed and co-wrote the script with brother Jonathan) throw everything into the cauldron: a space adventure, a suspenseful thriller and a domestic melodrama that aims for nothing less than a weepy climax. Interstellar is stunning, but it’s also frustrating. This is a manufactured epic wrought in the complex mould that combines Hollywood dazzle with deep-thinking sci-fi metaphysics — and as these two layers pile up, the film begins to feel bloated. When we feel wowed, it’s not because the film pushes our perception beyond our existential limits but because it’s such a wellmade sci-fi package. Space is a void. It’s the great abstract, and thus a great cinematic vehicle. But Interstellar, for all its 160-minutes, is too literalminded, too conspicuous to leave us with a sense of doubt and apprehension. Bangkok Post
At least three more Fast & Furious films will be made, according to Universal Studios chairman Donna Langley. Though Fast & Furious 7 has yet to be released, Langley described the series as “still a growing franchise” with enough juice to support three more movies. “Paul [Walker] is, and will always be, an integral part of the story. But there are many other great characters, and it’s also an opportunity to introduce new characters,” she said. Fast & Furious 7 opens April 2015.

Memories are made of this David Brook editor@classactmedia.co.th
I
n 1917, amidst the doom, gloom and despair of World War 1, two future entertainment legends were born: Dino Paul Crocetti and Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha, III . The world would eventually know them better as Dean Martin and Desi Arnaz. Crocetti was born to Italian immigrants in Ohio. He soon dropped out of school and became a liquor bootlegger, a croupier, worked in a steel mill and boxed as “Kid Crochet”. Show business beckoned and by 17 he was singing in local nightclubs as “Dino Martini”. In 1940 he changed his name to Dean Martin; so emerged one of the mid-20th century’s most popular entertainers. The aptly named “King of Cool”, teamed with Jerry Lewis in the immensely
Amy Arnaz, Desi Arnaz Jr, John Lowe, David Brook, Ricci Martin (and daughter) popular comedy duo team; was a member of the famed “Rat Pack” and a star in concert, night clubs, movies (making 51 in total), and even as a television show host. Dozens of hit singles followed, Memories Are Made of This, That’s Amore, You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Volare, but most memorably his signature tune, Everybody Loves Somebody, a blockbuster hit that knocked the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night off the top slot in 1964. For three decades, Martin was among the most popular acts in Las Vegas. He retired from show business in 1989, from public life in early 1995 and passed
away on Christmas morning 1995. The lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honour. By contrast Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III was born into an affluent family in Cuba. The family fled to Miami following the 1933 Cuban Revolution and Desi Arnaz turned to show business. He gained international renown as band leader of the “Desi Arnaz Orchestra”, but is best known for his role in the big hit American TV series I Love Lucy starring with his wife Lucille Ball. The 1950s series was the most watched show in the USA and remains hugely
popular today, still seen by 40 million Americans each year. Arnaz and Ball had two children: actress Lucie, and actor Desi Arnaz Jr. who became a drummer with a singing group in the late 1960s: “Dino, Desi, & Billy”, the others being Dean Paul Martin, and Billy Hinshe. The band scored two hit singles in 1965 but sadly Martin died in a military jet crash in 1987. Some years later the group reformed as “Ricci, Desi, & Billy”,with Ricci Martin, the youngest son of singer Dean Martin, replacing his late older brother. In August 1996, just eight months after the passing of Dean Martin, I was in Wasatch, Utah golfing with a group of friends. Our host, the hotel’s GM, invited us to an evening BBQ being held in aid of charity. As we mingled, our host beckoned us to meet a couple of special guests. I’ll never forget those famous words: “Guys I want you to meet Desi Arnaz junior and Dean Martin’s son”. Memories are made of this was playing the background… how appropriate.

Int’l teams face off in Phuket Soccer 7s FOOTBALL
JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
E
ven a torrential downpour couldn’t damper the spirits of Dubaibased Charmart Vets team that secured their fifth Cup in the Masters Over-35 category of the 12th CLA Andaman Soccer Sevens last Sunday (November 16). “This tournamet is always fantastic. We have a ball... The boys enjoy Phuket but we’re very serious up to the tournament. The food and everything will taste sweeter tonight,” said Charmart Vets goalkeeper Sadik Dhirani immediately following their 2-0 win over
Hanoi Drink Team (Vietnam) in the Cup final. Both teams met earlier over the weekend during group play, which Hanoi won 1-0. For the Charmart Vets – a team that had won the Cup in the Masters Over-35 category four previous times – the loss was extra motivation.
“I think the hunger to win gave us the victory. We’re a bunch of bad losers, we hate losing and our motive was to come and have fun, which we did. But then, of course, it’s more fun if you win,” Dhirani said. The competition is part
of a two-weekend event of international 7-a-side football where over 90 teams with players from over 20 different countries take part for the share of a Cup, Plate and Bowl prize in each category. This weekend (November 22-23) the 9th CLA Phuket Soccer Sevens competition will take place, once again at Thanyapura in Thalang. All the awards are formally presented to the teams at a ceremony at Thai Pan Nightlub in Patong on the Sunday night following the competition. For more information visit thaisoccer7s.com. Phuketians score 7s Plate trophy FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
LOCAL TEAM MORNING Star walked away with a Plate prize after winning the Plate in the Masters Over-35 competition. The team, made up entirely of older Phuket-based expats who participate in the local Super Six League played at Headstart International School, have taken part in the competition for over 6 years. “I think it’s organised well. The football is good, there’s quite a bunch of ex-professional here. I just wish the games were longer,” laughed
Ryan Meinhart, a teacher on the island. “The venue is nice, it’s a beautiful place to play, the surroundings are amazing. There are two teams that are our biggest competitions and it’s a good game all the time, but we try to attack too much,” he joked. The Andaman/Phuket Soccer Sevens event continues this weekend, November 22-23, from 8am to 6pm on both days. The awards ceremony takes place at Thai Pan Nightclub in Patong from 8pm. uay Thai – Thai Boxing – may finally be an official sport in the next Asian Games and after that, it is hoped, the Olympic Games. “Thai boxing is well known around the world. We would like Thai boxing to be a part of the Asian Games and the Olympics,” said Dr Sakchye Tapsuwan, President of International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur (IFMA) and Secretary General of the World Muay Thai Council (WMC) on Wednesday (November 18). Dr Sakchuye spoke to The Phuket News following the organisations’ annual general meeting at Patong Graceland Hotel, just minutes from the Muay Thai ring that was erected for the Asian Beach Games. “We delivered an application today to Haider Farman, the Director of the Asian Games Department of the Olympic Council of Asia. “It should not take too long to consider,” he said, explaining that Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism & Sports had thrown her weight behind the application by writing personally to the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). “I am confident that Muay
Photo: IFMA Thai will be approved. We should be proud because Thai boxing is part of Thai heritage.” Stephan Fox, Vice President of the WMC and the IFMA said, “Muay Thai should be in the Asian Games. It is a very strong sport. It started from Thailand and has spread around Malaysia, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, China and Korea. “But in the past, Thailand did not unite to push for its inclusion in international games because of political reasons. However, now that Ms Kobkarn is behind us I think we will see Muay Thai included in the [next] Asian Games [in Jakarta, Indonesia] in 2018. “Muay Thai should be an Asian sport because it ex-
presses an Asian tradition. It is also exciting to watch and has strong commercial backing.” Some of the criteria that the IOC considers include popularity of the sport in other countries and the amount of female participants. Mr Fox explained the process for the sport’s inclusion in the international arena. “First, Muay Thai had to be recognised by SportAccord (an international union of sports federations). SportAccord must recognize a sport for five years. We applied in 2006 [so that stage is completed].” But the next step – application to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – was delayed because of
“politics”, Mr Fox said. With the new regime in place that application has gone forward. “We are now in the process of being recognised by the IOC. That should take six months. After that the final step we have to work on is to get into the actual sports programme of the Olympics. “We are already in the approval process for two international events governed by the IOC – the World Games [in 2017 in Poland] and the Asian Games [in 2018]. All sports that want to be in the Olympics must first be featured in the World Games.” He added a final cautionary note: “Please, do not expect this to happen immediately.”

Thailand defeat NZ ahead of Suzuki Cup FOOTBALL THAILAND WILL BEGIN their Suzuki Cup campaign with confidence after beating New Zealand 2-0 in their final warm-up game last Tuesday night (november 18). Goals from Kirati Kaewsombut (40th) and Adisak Kraisorn (77th) finished off the All Whites at the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima. It was Thailand’s third win in as many warm-up matches, having beaten the Philippines and Nakhon Ratchasima. Thailand will face hosts Singapore in their Suzuki Cup opener on Sunday (November 23) with the other two teams in
Group B being Malaysia and Myanmar. The top two teams of two groups advance to the semi-finals, which, along with the final, will be played over two legs next month. Thailand will be trying to win back the Southeast Asian crown they last won in 2002. Defending champions Singapore are the Southeast Asian kings with four titles, one more than Thailand. Bangkok Post

ive members of the High Performance Academy at British International School Phuket (BISP) will compete for their respective nations in the upcoming 12th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), one of the most prestigious aquatics events on the globe. The competition, also known as the World Short Course Championships, will see Roxanne Yu, Jethro Chua and Jeremy Lin represent the Philippines. In addition, BISP newcomers Lushano Lamprecht and Felicity Passon will don the colours of Namibia and the Seychelles, respectively. This will be the first time the three Filipinos will take part in this particular event, though both Yu and Chua have each set national senior records (Yu for the 200m backstroke and Chua in the 400m freestyle). Yu also represented the Philippines in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing this past September. “It’s really exciting, because last year when we went to Singapore for the [FINA/ MASTBANK] World Cup, it was just three of us. Now there will be more of us representing our own countries and also representing BIS,” Yu told The Phuket
Phuket prodigy takes top prize in nationals GOLF JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
PHUKET’S 12-YEAR-OLD golf prodigy, Luangnitikul “Mark” Vanchai, took the top overall prize at the Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championships in Hua Hin earlier this month. This is the fourth straight year the Kajonkiet International School student has won the tournament in his age group but it is the first time he took the overall trophy following an outstanding three-day per-
formance where he finished 8-under par. It wasn’t even close as the second place winner finished 5-over par. “This tournament is really big for Thailand, so when I play, it’s exciting but I know I can do it,” Mark said. As
the sole junior golf athlete from Phuket, Vanchai held the island’s expectation on his shoulders but passed with flying colours. Earlier this year, he finished 4th at the prestigious Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California, in addition to a host of other international junior competitions. Next up, he plans to compete in Malaysia this December. He is also being recruited to train at Australian golfer Jason Day’s academy on a scholarship. “The people from the academy will talk to my dad and see what will happen,” he said.

News last week. “It’s good to see your team–mates race alongside you in these big competitions.” The swim academy began in August 2013 with just a handful of student athletes, but has since grown to include Lamprecht and Passon, both of whom are highly regarded swimmers from Africa and are no strangers to high-level competition. Passon has set several records in her native Seychelles while Lamprecht was named “National Junior Sportsman of the Year” for Namibia in 2013. Both student athletes have also competed in the 2012 World Short Course Championships in Turkey. While Passon has only been in Phuket for a few weeks, Lamprecht arrived in early October.
“It was hard at first because it was my first time boarding, but everyone was helpful. I’ve fully adapted,” he said. “The training is similar as [in Namibia], though it’s more technique based [at BISP].” Even though all five student athletes will represent their native countries in high-level competition – and possibly against each other – they all recognise they are still team mates at the end of the day. It’s just part of their camraderie. “It happens in training, we compete. If we see someone that’s faster than you, you end up pushing yourself and end up pushing them to go faster too. So you’re always working to make each other better,” Chua said.

FOOTBALL
E
ngland and reigning champions Spain both secured home victories in Euro 2016 qualifying last Saturday (November 15) as some of the continent’s minnows again enjoyed outstanding results. A turgid Group E encounter between England and Slovenia at Wembley came to life in the second half as Roy Hodgson’s side fought back to win 3-1 and make it four wins from four games in Group E to remain firmly on track for a place at the finals in France. Slovenia took the lead just before the hour mark when Jordan Henderson headed into his own net, but England were back on level terms moments later thanks to Wayne Rooney, who won and then converted a penalty to mark the occasion of his 100th international appearance with his 44th goal for his country. Danny Welbeck of Arsenal then netted a brace to seal the victory.
“It was a good day in the end. We had to show character and that will be good for us in the team. Since the World Cup, we haven’t faced that (going behind),” said Rooney. Spain scored a routine 3-0 victory against Belarus in Group C, a result that saw the current European champions make it three wins from four qualifiers. “We played well, we dominated the match and scored twice in the first half which gave us a certain peace of mind,” said Spain coach Vicente del Bosque. In contrast, Europe’s largest nation Russia went down 1-0 in Austria in the same group to increase the pressure on coach Fabio Capello. The result comes a month after Russia were held at home by Moldova and days after the country’s football union said they could no longer afford to pay Capello’s huge salary, believed to be around US$8.8m per year. Austria are now four points clear at the top of the group from Sweden, who were held
to a 1-1 draw in Montenegro. Bosnia sacked coach Safet Susic on Monday (November 17) following a series of poor results in qualifiers. On Sunday (November 16), Bosnia, lacking several first-choice players like strikers Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic, were defeated 3-0 by Israel. Bosnia failed to win a qualifying match following a 2-1 defeat to Cyprus draws against Wales (0-0) and Belgium (1-1). The Netherlands recorded a morale-boosting win while Italy saw their perfect start to the campaign ended by Croatia in an eventful encounter last Sunday (November 16). Guus Hiddink had indicated that he would resign as coach of the Dutch if they lost to Latvia. However, the World Cup semi-finalists recorded their second win in four games by thumping Latvia 6-0 in Amsterdam. In Milan, Italy dropped their first points in Group H in a 1-1 draw with Croatia that was marred by crowd trouble.
The evening started well for the Azzurri as Antonio Candreva drilled home to give them the lead 11 minutes in at the San Siro. However, Croatia levelled four minutes later, and the game was then halted for 10 minutes in the second half when away supporters sent a hail of flares down onto the pitch from high in the stands. Riot police clashed with fans in the Croatian section of the ground but the visitors could have won it late on, Perisic flashing a shot narrowly wide of the far post. Elsewhere, Wales extended their unbeaten start in Group B with a battling performance to hold World Cup quarterfinalists Belgium to a 0-0 draw in Brussels. “There are six games to play and that’s a lot of points and teams will be chasing us down. But we’re definitely on the right track,” said Wales manager Chris Coleman. The next round of European Championship qualifiers will be played at the end of March. AFP

Mercedes poised for dramatic final race
IN BRIEF
FORMULA ONE JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

IRB changes name to World Rugby
T
he final weekend of Formula One is upon us and Britain’s Lewis Hamilton is on the cusp of winning his second title – that is unless his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg steals it at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this Sunday (November 23). “I’ve learnt a lot in the years since 2008, but I’m still the same driver. I still have the same hunger, the same will to win, and I’ve been giving everything I’ve got from the word go this season,” Hamilton said in a statement. The biggest question heading into Sunday’s (November

A rule change made prior to the start of the season introduced a double-points system for the final race of the year in a bid to have an exciting showdown.
Hamilton, however, has been in top form the entire year having won 10 races. Rosberg has been right there with him, finishing first in four races and second in 10 races. “I absolutely believe I still have the chance to take the title in Abu Dhabi,” Rosberg said, “Win or lose, double points or no double points, I am proud
of what I have achieved this year... I go into this race with no fear and with every belief that this can be my title.” Whatever the outcome at the Yas Marina Circuit, Mercedes will still come out on top having clinched the World Constructors Championship back on October 12 at the Russian Grand Prix.
The International Rugby Board, the global governing body for the 15-a-side code, formally changed its name to World Rugby on Tuesday at the conclusion of its two-day conference in London. Explaining the reason for the change, World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “Today’s launch embodies our mission statement to grow the global rugby family beyond our traditional family and fan base and reflects the federation’s evolution from rugby regulator to rugby inspirer.” What was the International Rugby Football Board was founded in 1886 by the Irish, Scottish and Welsh rugby unions before England joined in 1890, with the initial name change to the IRB coming in 1998. Federer “hopeful” for Davis Cup final Roger Federer said Tuesday he was “hopeful” he would be able to play in the Davis Cup final against France this weekend (November 21-23) despite the crippling back injury he sustained in London. Federer sustained the back injury playing in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour finals in London on Saturday evening (November
15) during a gruelling three set match against Swiss teammate Stan Wawrinka. “This back spasm [or] whatever it might be, it’s just not a fun thing to have during the day.... But I’m positive and I’m hopeful that it’s going to go away very soon” Were Federer to miss the final, it would be a huge body blow to Swiss hopes as although Wawrinka at fourth in the world is comfortably ranked above all the French players, after him the fall off in the Swiss team is steep with Marco Chiudinelli 212th and Michael Lammer 508th. World Beach Games next? BEACH GAMES

sian Beach Games fever has taken over the island and with hundred of athletes from 45 countries participating in this year’s event, the competition has been a soaring success so far. The logistical efficiency of the event already has officials looking towards the future. Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul revealed that the 4th Asian Beach Games is a good proof
of Thailand and a stepping stone to host future worldclass competitions. However, she said to host such major Games, well-qualified personnel are required. Although many participating teams have praised hosts Thailand for the “excellent” Asian Beach Games, major improvements are still needed to make the Games the possible best. “After this, I will push things forward to support Thailand in hosting major sporting events. Sports offer many benefits to the country
not only on tourism promotion, but also an inspiration for the youngsters to increasingly pay more attention to sports,” Kobkarn said. “The nearest competition for us to be able to host is the World Beach Games, which are expected to be held for the first time in 2017,” she said. “Many countries including Japan, China and South Korea have been regarded as our main bid rivals. However, with a great experience in hosting the Phuket Games, I believe Thailand will have an advantage.”

IT’S NOT A SPORTING event until Captain Thailand shows up. He twirls his red, white and blue umbrella, leads the crowd in loud cheers and shakes hands with athletes from all sides once the game is over. Captain Thailand is here to cheer. “I come to every sporting event in Thailand. Asian Beach Games is important and it’s fun to cheer,” the Bangkok native told The Phuket News after Thailand’s victory over Iran in the Foot Volley event on November 15 in Patong. “I want to come to all sports to make funny and have everyone enjoy the games.” Without the costume, Captain Thailand is Dukdae Chernyim – a well-known Thai comedian who is a frequent guest on several nationally televised shows. During competitions, how-
ever, Dukdae transforms into Captain Thailand and flies around the country, leading cheers in an effort to make the events – which are mostly football and volleyball matches – much more fun for the crowd “I already go to Beach Flag Football, Beach Wrestling, Beach Sambo, Ju-Jitsu, and plan to go watch Beach Volleyball and Handball. There are so many sports. It’s hard but very fun to go and be loud, making people happy,” he said just as two fans asked to take his photo. “I feel like superstar!,” he yelled out.
TH A ILA N D SPA N K ED Kuwait 58-39 on their way to a gold medal in the Beach Flag Football event at the 4th Asian Beach Games last Friday (November 14). Thailand ran roughshot in the first half and for much of the second as Kuwait struggled to find answers to the strong Thai offensive. With both defense and offense clicking on all cylinders, Kuwait found themselves in an early hole and headed into halftime down 27 points. But Kuwait rallied late in the second half and scored in two straight possessions following a rare interception of Thai quarterback Saranloet Phithaya – but it was too late. Thailand’s performance impressed Thomas Wiking, President of the International Federation of American Football. “Thailand has been playing for a long time, they should be
the winners. They are a very good team. I think if you know what you’re doing and you take in the right coaches, then it could dvelop quite quickly,” Wiking said. Three of Thailand’s players were part of the Thai middle school team that won the 2005 World Flag Football Championships while two others were part of the impressive 2006 team. Flag football veteran and Thailand coach Theerawut “Chok” Suvanratanamanee told The Phuket News how much winning the inaugural Beach Flag Football event meant to him. “I feel very good! We do a lot of 1-on-1 drills for one
year and we train a lot. My team did very very good. I saw Kuwait yesterday and they play a short and long game – they have two types. So today I put strategy to protect against this,” he said. Despite the loss, Kuwait coach Paul Williams was proud of his team for winning a silver medal since the country has only known about Flag Football – and it’s big brother sport of Americal tackle football – for just two years. “This is a good step in the right direction. Other people are surprised but we aren’t, not in our locker room. We expected to be here because we put in a lot of work so it’s been good,” he said.

W HEN THE W HISTLE blew in the finale Foot Volley match between Thailand and Iran, the Kingdom’s Brazilian coach could hardly contain himself. “For me this moment... I don’t know how to explain,” Thailand coach Jose Antonio Da Silva Carvalho told The Phuket News immediately after the Thai team won the gold medal at the 4th Asian Beach Games in Patong. “It took me seven years to show that Foot Volley is an exciting sport. For Thailand to win this, to play an amazing match in front of all these people, I’m very happy.” Thailand won three straight matches on Friday (November 14), the first day of the event – against Vietnam, South Korea, and Iran (by way of injury) – to advance to the semi-final round on Saturday (November 15). The Thai team easily defeated Malaysia in the semi-final – winning two straight sets by a score of 18-5 and 18-2 – to secure their place in the final in a rematch against Iran. Iran made a strong run in the second set after losing the first one 18-8. With the score 17-11, Thai player Ruangsri Thanee was able to get the final point to secure gold. The win was particularly special for Carvalho, a former player in Brazil who moved to Thailand seven years ago and aims to make Foot Volley a mainstay in the country. “We want to show people that this is a great but difficult sport since you have to be physical, technical and possess many skills together,” he said, “Now, Thai people are very happy. We want to make Foot Voolley more popular with this win.” For more information on the 4th Asian Beach Games, visit Phuketthailand2014.com thephuketnews
