DISASTER IN THE BAY
TWO DEAD, DOZENS HURT AS SPEEDBOAT RAMS TRAWLER
T
wo Korean tourists were found dead at the bottom of Phang Nga bay on Tuesday (October 21) after a horrific collision two days before between the speedboat they were riding in and a fishing boat. The collision flung tourists around the inside of the boat and into the water.
Most were not wearing life vests. All of those on board who survived the crash – 37 passengers and six crew – were hospitalised, some with serious head and spinal injuries. Twenty eight were still in hospital as The Phuket News went to press on Tuesday. A Chinese tourist told The Phuket News what happened as the boat made its way back from Maya Bay on Phi Phi Le island to the Royal
Phuket Marina. “I was sitting in the middle of the speedboat, towards the back. The weather was fine, the sky was very clear and there was no rain,” said Rui Xing Pei, a tourist from China. “The speedboat was running very fast, banging through high waves but I nodded off.” He was still asleep when the speedboat, the Seastar 29, slammed into the trawler Sinpichai 11. The captain of the speedboat, Surat

Mat-Osot, 36, later told police that he had been distracted by a black bin bag that was being blown about in the boat. He bent down to secure it. When he sat upright again, he saw to his horror that there was a trawler dead ahead, and very close. He wrenched the wheel over but the hull of the speedboat caught on the trawler’s fishing gear, and slammed into the stern of the trawler.

Survivors recount speedboat horror Continued from page 1 Passengers were hurled in all directions, many being thrown overboard. “When the accident happen, I lost my senses,” Mr Pei said. “All I remember is that a woman helped me to climb from the speedboat to the fishing boat, and I lay down on the deck of trawler. “The next thing I remember is being carried from a boat to shore and being taken to hospital.” Bangkok Hospital Phuket said that Mr Pei, who is sharing a room with his brother, another victim of the crash, was suffering from a “blunt abdomen injury”. “I am feeling better now, but I still have some pain in my back,” he told The Phuket News. Asked whether passengers on the boat were wearing buoyancy aids, he said that most were not. Did staff remind passengers to wear them? “Nobody warned us to wear the life jackets,” he replied. Despite this, all but two of the people on board managed to survive being dumped in the water, some with terrible injuries. Those two were Korean
tourists Mr Go Min Woo, 31, and Mrs An Sun Yong, 28 Mr Go Min Woo, 31, and Mrs An Sun Yong, 28. Throughout Monday and most of Tuesday, Marine Police patrol boats searched the sea around the crash site, aided by a helicopter from the Royal Thai Navy, along with fishing boats and others. But it was not until Marine Police divers swam down to the wreckage of the Seastar 29 that the two missing Koreans were found close by, on the sea bed. The skipper Surat MatOsot was arrested by Krabi Police, initially on a charge of reckless piloting resulting in injury. That charge has now been upgraded to one of reckless piloting causing death.

Marine Dept mulls better boat safety F
ollowing the disaster in Phang Nga Bay on Sunday (October 19) The Marine Department is considering tightening the rules governing speedboats and other small tourist craft. The rules, said Deputy Director General Jiraporn Jantarasiri, might include a ban on small tour boats leaving shore during dangerous weather, AIS tracking devices on all speedboats, and an attempt to enforce the wearing of buoyancy aids by all passengers while on the water. Mrs Jiraporn said, “We have called relevant officers, insurance and owners of the Seastar company for questioning to get all details, as well as a statement from the boat driver, who is now under arrest.” She suggested that any or all of the following measures may be enforced: Strict checks that all boats have sufficient buoyancy aids before they leave port; “We are already strict about this, but tourists tend to take off the jackets later. The best way we can counter this is to order boat crews to refuse to move the boat any further if any passengers take off their life jacket or refuse to put them on.” - Asking for cooperation
Injured passengers Pei Rui Xing and his brother (in green pajamas) are visited on Tuesday by Chinese Consul Wang Huijuan (left), Gov Nisit Jansomwong and Marine Dept Deputy Director General Jiraporn Jantarasiri. from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to help get foreign tour coordinators who travel with tourists to explain the situation to the passengers so that there is no miscommunication. - The Ministry of Tourism will be requested to support the development of “conscious minds” among boat drivers. “This would actually be before they get a license – they must pass tests that include assessing their ability and behaviour. - A red flag system, similar to the one on the beaches, but telling small boats not to leave shore when the weather is bad. - AIS tracking system on
all speedboats, which can be linked to the Chalong Yacht Centre. - Clearer demarcation of channels to be used by tour boats and fishing boats. “This we will discuss with the Fisheries Department.” “I think more measures about boat safety will be discussed at the national level. This is why I have come to Phuket – to collect information about the accident,” Mrs Jiraporn said. The owner of the Seastar company, who asked not to be named, was reluctant to comment on the crash. “Since the accident, many
officials have called me for questioning – which has made us very busy at the moment. We have given them our full support.. “My wife and I couldn’t sleep because we have been so concerned about the customers and their relatives. We will support them with anything they may need. The passengers are covered by the company’s insurance policy, up to B500,000 for injuries and B1 million for deaths. If costs go beyond that, the Ministry of Tourism will pay an additional B100,000 and if that is still not enough, the Seastar owners will be liable.

Gen Ruangsak flew into Phuket at about 2:30 and immediately went into a meeting with Phuket police. In the meeting, police decided they will enforce marine safety rules more stringently, and that officials must work more efficiently together to keep tourists in boats safe. Gen Ruangsak explained that this would be done in four ways: Officials dealing with marine transportation must work together and be stricter. The required number of officials and officers must be on duty at all times.

Villagers live in fear of Big Buddha landslide A year since they first complained of landslides, people in homes below the Big Buddha say they still live in fear that they may be buried in mud and rocks any day. Villager Chalong Loysamut told The Phuket News that was recently driving up the road below the Big Buddha when he spotted a crane truck at the top. This, he said, might shake more soil loose. Suporn Wanitchakul, President of the Creation Committee of the Phraphutthamingmongkhol Sattha 45 Foundation replied, “There is nothing to worry about. The land department gave grass to me, which I have planted in the landslide areas. There is no problem, even when it is raining.” But Mr Chalong said, “We keep hearing that they will fix [the landslip problem]. But until now no serious attempts have been made to solve it. “Every time I go up to the Big Buddha everything is the same. Nothing has changed. We have sent repeated requests to officials but we have received no response. And construction continues up there.” Phuket Vice-Governor Somkiet Sungkhaosutthirak, who inspected landslide damage in March this year, told The Phuket News, “I have heard about this. But, it seems that Karon Municipality has done nothing about it.
Armed with a microchip scanner, officials from Phuket Department of Livestock Development check details of an elephant employed at Kathu Elephant Trekking camp.
Elephants await their fate
An alms bowl lies in debris from a recent landslide on the hillside under the Big Buddha in Chalong. “I will check it out and remind Karon again.” A spokesperson for Karon Municipality Land Office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the Municipality had already ordered all construction work on the Big Buddha stopped. “Karon Municipality has responsibility for approving all buildings in the area, except the Big Buddha. That is the responsibility of the Forestry Department. “If [the plans for] this structure had come to me, it would not be approved because it is about 300 metres above sea level – well above the 80-metre limit. All we can do is order them to cease
construction.” Angkarak Ritthirut, Director of Krabi-based Forestry Department Area 12, which covers Phuket, told The Phuket News, “I have already told the [Big Buddha] foundation to stop construction. “The foundation is now just decorating the inside of the structure, which has no effect on the land around the site. We have already planted grasses and trees in the area.” He said that the Big Buddha might not be the sole cause of erosion and landslips. “There could be other reasons such as market gardening or planting of rubber trees, which have very shallow roots.”

The pachyderms, including two infants, were due to join elephants already legally employed at Kathu Elephant Trekking camp, a tourist attraction located on three rai in Kathu with access to about 10km of trekking trails. The owner of Kathu Elephant Trekking, Thinakorn Jommaung, told The Phuket News on Friday (Oct 17) that he had been unaware of the rules for employing elephants and wanted to do the right thing when he later found out that the new arrivals required official licenses, other documents and micro chips in order to legally stay in Phuket. “I have invested B3 mil-

Mr Thinakor had the six elephants removed from Phuket and sent to Krabi until it can be confirmed whether they have been properly registered and micro chipped, prior to the inspection visit on Friday by Phuket Department of Livestock Development officer Jirayut Niranwiroth, who confirmed that the five elephants already at the camp all had the appropriate microchips embedded in the ears. However, he said, the six elephants now in Krabi would have to be scanned to check whether they have had microchips implanted. Until then, they must remain in Krabi.

huket’s representative in the newly-formed National Reform Council (NRC) met with the president of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (OrBorJor), Paiboon Upatising, on October 16. The representative, Cherdchai Wongseree, came to thank Mr Paiboon for supporting his candidature. He was one of five names chosen by a Phuket committee that included Mr Paiboon. The names were forwarded to Bangkok, where the ruling National Council for Peace and Order chose one – Mr Cherdchai Wongseree. His name then appeared among the 250 published in the Royal Gazette, after approval by HM King Bhumibol, to serve as NRC members. “When I initially applied, I did not expect to be chosen. I would like to say thank you for supporting me and choosing me as the NRC representative for Phuket,” Mr Cherdchai said. A Phuket native and a law graduate from Ramkhamhaeng University, Mr Cherdchai said that unity and reconciliation were his top priorities, “I will work with honesty,” he added. “When I applied for the NRC position, I felt like this country needed help. The people of Thailand are divided by two political parties; if you don’t belong to one [or the other], or cooperate with them, you will have

So, my priority will be to reorganise Thailand,” he added. Mr Paiboon said, “I am glad to have you represent Phuket in the NRC. Our committee chose you as one of the five sent to Prime Minister

elected seat in the Senate, but came second to another local lawyer, Chaiyot Panyawai. Mr Cherdchai blamed his failure to get elected as Senator on the fact that he was not aligned to either the Democrat Party nor the Pheu Thai Party.

fficials again visited Nai Yang last Friday (October 17) and knocked down part – but not all – of a guesthouse deemed to be encroaching on the beach. Backed up by the might of Royal Thai Navy marines, Sakoo OrBorTor officers led by Sumet Suwannarat, the OrBorTor’s Administrative Chief, moved in with an excavator. “We have come to demolish the rest of the illegal structures,” Mr Sumet said at the site. In the event, however, officials were not able to carry through on all the demolition they wanted to do because there are still questions of land ownership that are in the courts. Officials firmly believe that all the buildings they want to knock down are illegal, either because they are inside the boundaries of Sirinart Marine National Park, or because they are on public land, or because they contravene regulations on building height close to the sea. Surin Yotharak, deputy mayor of Sakoo, explained, “According to the Building Act, buildings next to the beach cannot be higher than six

FLAMES DESTROYED A CUSHion shop after sparks from welding work on the roof ignited a fire which escalated and burnt down the entire building. At 4pm on Tuesday (October 21) Meuang police along with six fire trucks were called to the scene on Bangkok Rd in Phuket Town. It took officials over 30 minutes to put out the fire but they were not able to save the shop. There were no reported injuries and estimates of damage were still being calculated by officials. Police questioned the shop owner’s son, Rawat Suwanwong, who said he hired workers to replace the roof. He said that the shower of electrical sparks fell into a bucket of paint thinner, which burst into flame.

Celebrating roots in local ‘Loy Krathong’ I
f you’re in Phuket on November 3-4, be sure to head up to Thalang’s Srisoonthon district for their annual “Loy Krathong” celebration, which will feature a lot of local history, colour, culture, entertainment, food and fancy fair festivities galore. This year’s Loy Krathong celebrations in Srisoonthon will be dubbed “Kit Teung Tai Raang Part 3”, a themed festival to commemorate the glorious tin mining past of the area, and will take place in the courtyards surrounding the Bang Maruan water retention area. Be sure to bring a camera, appetite and curiosity as there will be plenty in store to captivate you and the entire family – parades, shows, games and, of course, the traditional Loy Krathong water floating rites, commonly held in the evening under the bright moonlight. Srisoonthon locals gear up for the annual Loy Krathong festival. Thailand’s most popular festivals, second only to perhaps Songkran (in mid-April). Its date, dictated by the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, varies every year, but usually happens in November.
Traditionally, the underlying objective of the festival was to pay homage to the life-giving water guardian (Mae Kong Ka), and to ask forgiveness for polluting her all year. In the old days, organic
biodegradable materials were used to construct the “Krathong” floats. However, many materials used today include non bio-degradable materials, such as plastic, safety pins, candel wax and joss sticks. Suticha Sirirat

Former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin with his wife Srikam Chaisri, on their wedding day in 1972.
Thousands turn out for Pian’s funeral THOUSANDS OF MOURNers turned out on Saturday (October 18) to pay their final respects to former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, at his cremation at the Laem Phet Temple in Patong. Politicians, local government officials and residents went to the funeral. ViceGovernor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak helped to organise the ceremony. Mr Pian died unexpectedly on October 7 from a massive heart attack. The Vietnam War veteran and former mayor, who was 72 when he died, was found by his driver in the bathroom of his Rassada residence. An autopsy later showed that the controversial leader had been suffering from heart problems. Pian Keesin was born on February 12, 1942, in Patong, the son of Kim and Joy Keesin. It was a large family; there were six boys and girls.
He served as a soldier in Nakhon Sri Thammarat from 1965 to 1967 before being posted to Vietnam, where he served in the war against North Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. In 1972 he married Srikam Chaisri and they in turn had six children – Prammada, Pattawee, Prechawut, Pagrit and Pamuth Keesin, and Sanit Tengkowprasert. From 1974 to 1993 he served as the elected village head of Kathu and in 1993 he was elected Kamnan of Patong, in which post he received gold awards in three successive years as best kamnan in the province. In April 1994, after the creation of elected municipalities and OrBorTor he was elected Mayor of Patong, a post he held until October 2001, and then again from June 2004 to July 2012, and from September 2012 to March 2014.

olice last week seized more than B9 million worth of methamphetamine and arrested four people believed to be involved in a drug distribution ring that provided narcotics to tourists and bar staff on Patong’s Bangla Rd, among other places. The investigation, which is on-going, also revealed that the drug ring received their supplies through a coordinated effort with an unidentified woman – “Ms Bee” – who is in a prison somewhere in Thailand. A total of 2.37 kg of ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) and ya ba (methamphetamine) were shown to the media during a press conference on Thursday (October 16) at Phuket Provincial Police Station. The investigation began on October 12 after Phuket City Police arrested a man they are calling only “Mr G”, since it would be dangerous to reveal his real name. “He was arrested in Rasada. Based on this arrest, we expanded the investigation to learn more about this big drug network in Phuket,” said Phuket City Police Superintendent Sermphan Sirikong. Mr G provided information on two drug dealers – one

house on Thepkrasattri Road and seized 1.18 kg of ya ice. Shortly after midnight on Tuesday night (October 13) they also arrested 25-year-old Jack in Srisoonthorn with another 1.19 kgs of ya ice. On Thursday (October 15)
Patong police grabbed Rabeip Laoongkaeo, 47, along with 1.18 kgs of ya ice. “Jack distributed drugs for a man known as ‘Mr Top’. At this stage, we do not know his real name. However, Mr Top, Ms Kik and Ms Rabeip worked together to provide drugs in Thalang, Patong, and Bangla Rd to tourists and bar staff,” said Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit, the Phuket Provincial Police Commander. All drugs within the network were distributed by Ms Kik. She confessed that the drug network was linked to a prisoner, an unidentified woman she named “Ms Bee”, who is currently serving time in a penitentiary in Thailand. Kik revealed that she would pick up the dr ugs from a black Toyota Vios that passed through the Tah Chat Chai check point in northern Phuket. “Police have done their best to check all the cars entering Phuket, but sometimes drug dealers are very clever at hiding drugs in their cars,” Gen Patchara explained. “But we will be more strict and diligent in our inspections. “Police will continue to crack down on drug networks in Phuket. We will get rid of all drugs in Phuket.” The investigation is ongoing.

The Sea Gypsy Cultural Centre in Koh Siray, which was once a potential museum hailed as ‘the first of its kind in Asia’, has fallen into disrepair over the years.

ea gypsy village heads met with Deputy Rassada Mayor Pawat Suppasuwan at the municipality offices on Monday (October 20) to discuss what to do with the abandoned Sea Gypsy Cultural Centre at Baan Laem Tukkae village, Koh Siray, which has fallen into disrepair since it was handed over to the municipality two years ago. Built between 2010 and 2011 using a combination of natural and high-tech environmentally-friendly building materials, the cultural centre was designed to be a selfsustaining ‘living’ museum dedicated to preserving the area’s sea gypsy culture and traditions while providing local villagers with a source of income from visiting tourists. Construction of the Sea
Gypsy (Urak Lawoi) Cultural Centre was initially commissioned by the Phuket Office of Public Works at a cost of B5.4 million. It was hailed as “the first of its kind in Asia”. Just over B2 million in funding was allocated from the 2010 provincial budget. The remainder was provided by the 2010 Thai Khem Khaeng (Strong Thailand) financial stimulus package instigated by the government at the time under Abhisit Vejjajiva. When construction was completed in 2012, the Phuket Office of Public Works officially transferred management and financing of operations at the cultural centre to Rassada Municipality, which had plans to rejuvenate the area and turn it into a tourist attraction. At Monday’s meeting, Deputy Rassada Mayor Pawat complained that the center was built ‘inappropriately’ and left

finished when it was handed over; it lacked the doors, a stage and toilets, which were promised in the beginning,”
said Mr Pawat. The deputy mayor said the municipality has already spent B1 million on upkeep of the centre and another B1 million has already been approved but in his opinion it would be a waste of money. “The centre can be fixed but it will be damaged by the weather again. We stopped a year ago as there was no one using it,” he said. The deputy mayor suggested building a completely new facility instead, which would require an additional, unspecified budget. Village chief Opas Jitpaen expressed his agreement with the deputy mayor. “The center has never been finished. Now it is falling apart and useless. It has become a toilet for dogs and a place for drug addicts,” said Mr Opas. “At first I had plans for the museum to showcase our
history and culture with traditional shows such as RongNgeng but the centre was not built the way they promised us,” he said. Deputy Mayor Pawat said provincial authorities would seek ways to support the sea gypsies with opportunities from tourism. “The Cultural Centre should be included in package tours, like in other countries, where tourists buy tickets for boat trips from the village to other islands. Tours of the centre and traditional shows can be part of a package. This will be a source of income for villagers and help the community in general,” said Pawat. Pawat concluded that a budget of B1 million will be available at the end of the year if it is decided to carry out repairs only, but further discussions would be held to decide the fate of the project.
Man arrested for knife murder of egg farmer POLICE HAVE CAUGHT A man wanted for murdering a Thalang egg farmer almost five months ago. The man, Chatchai Torkaew, 25, was arrested in Nongbua Lampu province in
Isan on a warrant issued on September 24 on charges of first degree murder and robbery. Police allege that on May 29 Chatchai followed Nongluk Thawan, 42, to her home in
Soi Bangniew, Srisoonthorn, and used a kitchen knife to stab and kill her before grabbing a B20,000 gold necklace from around her neck and then climbing over a fence. Investigators following the case discovered that Chatchai had hidden in Kankayha village for at least a month before going back to his home town in Nongbua Lampu. After his capture, police said, Chatchai confessed to all charges against him and told police he had killed Ms Nongluk for the gold necklace. He added that he had thrown the knife into a nearby klong. Many of the victim’s relatives, however, believe that Chatchai was hired to kill Ms Nongluk because of a

Joss stick prayer fire causes B200,000 worth of damage A FIRE BROKE OUT IN A house in Thalang last Friday morning (October 17) while no one was home, resulting in an estimated B200,000 worth of damages. At 8am, Thalang police, rescue services and firemen were called to Soi Khundon 1 where the one-storey house was on fire. Officials found local residents spraying water onto an altar inside the house. It took officials and residents 45

minutes to put out the blaze. The house owner, Pitsanu Solsiri, 44, told police he lit joss sticks to honour the gods on the altar as part of his daily routine before he and his family left the house. At 7:50am, Mr Pitsanu received a call from a neighbour who said he could see smoke coming from the house. The ceiling had collapsed and was badly burned, while several pieces of furniture were damaged by the fire.
ice Governor Somkiet Sangkhawsuthirak, along with officials from the Damrongtham Centre, recently inspected the forest on Patong Hill behind the hilltop Chaopoh Sua shrine after local people complained that massive wells had been dug illegally and huge water tanks built, blocking the flow of natural water courses. The complaints, initially sent to Patong Municipality, allege that the illegal wells block water flowing from the Narkkerd Hills, which provides the the water source for villagers in Baan Mon. The complaint also alleges that the wells caused a drought across the area last summer. Thanin Atthasap, President of Patong Municipality Council filed the official complaint with the Damrongtham Centre, in which he explained, “We tried to push this issue through the council meeting on June 30 but there has been
no investigation or solution for the villagers at all. “We are concerned that the construction of these large wells and tanks in the forest will also destroy nature and it will be dangerous in the future as the trees on the mountain have always protected the village from flooding.” After the inspection, Damrongtham Center chief, Prapan Kanprasang, told The Phuket News that there is already a related case being heard in court following an arrest by the Royal Forestry Office three years ago. “This 200,000-litre tank is absolutely illegal; it is built in a forest preserve. The owners were told to remove it but they did not, because, they claimed, the court case had not been finalised. “Today they will face further charges of blocking a natural water way.” Mr Prapan also noted that the tanks were built more than 200 metres above sea level, clearly contravening the law

ers claim that they are built on land that has SorKor 1 papers. Officials from the Land Office, the Forestry Office, the Municipality and the Environment Office will come to investigate the site and will report their results within seven days.” No one mentioned the name of the owner, who is believed to be an influential person.

O
nce again, the issue of tourist safety has been thrust into the spotlight with Sunday’s speedboat accident, which left two dead and more than 40 injured (see front page). The helmsman told police he was doing something on the floor of the boat, before looking up at the last minute and colliding with a large fishing vessel. Most of the passengers and crew survived thanks to there being 45 life jackets on board – still not enough for all crew and passengers on board at the time (47) but enough to meet official requirements. Sunday’s accident was the second this year involving a vessel packed with tourists and one of several in recent years that have repeatedly brought the issue of tourist safety, or lack of, back into the headlines.
With each new accident involving vessels packed with tourists, renewed efforts are announced to prevent repeat disasters by tightening of rules and more frequent inspections by authorities. In January, 2012, eight Australian families had to jump from a sinking speedboat during a cruise to Phi Phi Island. All survived but one of the passengers said the boat and crew were completely ill equipped for an emergency; having no flares and no radio on board. Proper testing and licensing for boat operators would be a good place to start as it seems the rules and regulations, or at least awareness of them, is lacking even more so than on the country’s highways. Remarkably, considering the hundreds of tour boats operating in Phuket and Phang
Nga, there is no training centre in Phuket where boat captains can learn the ropes. The nearest and only Merchant Marine Training Centre (MMTC) in Thailand, operated by the Ministry of Transportation, is located in Samut Prakan just outside Bangkok. Captains of large boats weighing over 250 tons have to take training courses at the MMTC before they can apply for a license. However, pilots of smaller boats under 250 tons do not need to go through any training at all. In fact small boat operators are stuck in a catch-22 situation in which they must have at least two years’ experience and be able to prove they know the regulations before they can apply for a license. A new training centre as part of the construction at Chalong Bay wouldn’t go a miss.

System to blame [Re: BREAKING: Phi Phi Phuket speedboat rams fishing boat off Koh Yao, three of 40 passengers lost at sea] In Thailand, there is no marine training center covering the Andaman Sea and the two marine training centres are in Samut Prakan and Pattaya. Therefore, all boat captains have no choice but to work at least one year for a boat operator company to apply to get a helmsman boat licence by complacency without proper training in marine regulation, safety and rescue. Boat operators in Thailand along the Andaman Sea would be happy to have a marine training centre to get better skilled boat crews. Charlie

Rights panel open inquiry as Koh Tao suspects are abused T
he National Human Rights Commission will meet with every police team involved in the Koh Tao murder case after a forensic unit determined the suspects might have been tortured during interrogation. Niran Pitakwatchara, chairman of the NHRC’s sub-commission on civil and political rights, asked officials working on the case to testify on Monday (October 20). They were from the National Police and the Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) under the Justice Ministry. The NHRC was acting on two suspect-abuse complaints. Pol Col Prachum Ruangthong, chief of Phangan police station, Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, director of the CIFS, and the medical team who went to Koh Tao with the NHRC on October 13 were all present at the hearing. Dr Niran said that, after the murder, numerous police teams had been sent to Koh Tao as well as local police at the district, provincial, regional and central levels. Marine police, tourism police and crime suppression police were also there. Each group had its own investigative team, Dr Niran quoted Col
Photo: David Sim Prachum as saying. The officer said he could not interfere with the work of those units, said Dr Niran. For Col Prachum’s own unit, his direct supervisor sent Pol Maj Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk from Bangkok police to collect all evidence and consolidate the investigations. However, Maj Gen Suwat came to the island after the two suspects had been detained. The forensic team, accompanied
by a translator, talked with suspects Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun on October 13 and found some interrogators might have tortured them, although it has yet to establish which team they belonged to. The suspects told the doctors they had been beaten and suffocated with a plastic bag but the doctors did not find wounds or bruises on them. Threat from Ebola low as Thailand is ‘well prepared’ THE DEPARTMENT OF Disease Control has played down the threat of an Ebola outbreak in Thailand, saying experience in dealing with infectious diseases outbreaks had prepared the kingdom to cope with any emergencies. “We have prepared for all kind of diseases,” said DDC deputy director-general Opart Karnkawingpong. “In the past we dealt with all kinds of deadly diseases such as Sars, bird flu, swine flu, and more.” Dr Opart’s assurance came amidst growing concern over the international response to the Ebola outbreak, which has claimed more than 4,500 lives since March. So far, the outbreak has mostly been confined to West Africa, where it originated. But eight confirmed cases in the US last week, as well as several recent deaths in Spain, mean the virus has now been found on three continents, triggering a more concerted global response. Although there have been no confirmed cases in Asia, Dr Opart said the DDC has put preventive measures in @thephuketnews
Photo: NIAID place in a bid to thwart any potential outbreak here. The first measure applies to all travellers, Thai and foreign, arriving from affected countries. Dr Opart said those people are required to report to the DDC immediately upon arrival. The DDC will record their personal information, and will contact them daily for 21 days to check on their health. If a person falls ill within that period, they will be asked to inform the DDC immediately and will be sent to one of four designated hospitals in Bangkok: Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute, Rajavithi Hospital, Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital or Lerdsin Hospital. If they live outside Bangkok, they must report to a regional hospital. Foreigners who have trav-
elled from an affected country will need a document from the DDC to certify they are clear of Ebola. If they don’t have that paper in their hand, immigration police will not stamp their passport and they will be prohibited from entering the country. Since June, around 2,000 Thai citizens have returned from the affected areas, Dr Opart said. None of them have shown any sign of Ebola. Dr Opart said all hospitals nationwide have been instructed to monitor the situation closely. If any patients are found with symptoms that indicate they might have Ebola, they will be questioned about their recent travel itinerary. If they have been anywhere near an affected area, hospital staff are required to quarantine them and call the DDC’s 1422 hotline immediately. Anyone who has made direct contact with a suspected Ebola patient will be asked to leave their contact details, and will be monitored for 30 days. Medical staff are required to treat all suspected cases. Bangkok Post

The two suspects have been detained since October 1. “Seven to eight police teams worked at the same time so we need to ask all of them to give testimony. Col Prachum insisted it did not happen in his custody as
there was a lawyer present during the interrogation,” Dr Niran said. Two Myanmar workers reportedly confessed to killing British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller on the island on October 2. Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were bludgeoned to death near to where they were staying on the island on September 15. Also on Monday, migrant-rights activists visited both Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, getting to speak to them in Myanmar and English. Activist Andy Hall of the Migrant Workers Rights Network tweeted following the visit that both said “their treatment was fine, they experienced no problems inside the prison but said were obviously unhappy in the prison.” Hall continued that both “seemed in good health, did not appear stressed or worried about anything,” adding they were having some “difficulty with wearing chains on feet.” Both suspects also reported missing their families terribly, Hall tweeted. He said the two informed him that their parents were awaiting visas to travel to Thailand to see them. Bangkok Post

Khmer Rouge lawyers boycott genocide trial D
efence lawyers for two former leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime said Saturday (October 18) they would boycott a new genocide trial until they appealed the pair’s earlier conviction, in a move which threatens to delay an already lengthy case. In August Nuon Chea, 88, known as “Brother Number Two”, and ex-head of state Khieu Samphan, 83, were given life sentences for crimes against humanity after their first trial at Cambodia’s UNbacked court. That ruling saw them become the first top figures to be jailed from a regime responsible for the deaths of up to two million Cambodians from 1975-1979. Both men lodged appeals against the convictions last month but their lawyers said Saturday they needed time to file the full appeal documents. “As long as we have not

It is the first time defence lawyers have staged a boycott of the special court, set up in 2006 to try senior regime figures, in a move which could further prolong the trial.
The complex case against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan was split into a series of smaller trials in 2011 in a bid to get a faster verdict for reasons including their advanced age and the large number of accusations. “Our boycott will not paralyse the court because we have a clear time frame, it is until we finish our appeal,
around two months,” claimed co-defence lawyer Kong Sam Onn, adding they also sought a decision on a motion to disqualify the court’s judges, who both ex-leaders accuse of bias. The August convictions followed a two-year trial focused on the forced evacuation of around two million Cambodians from Phnom Penh into rural labour camps and
murders at one execution site. On Friday (October 17) prosecutors opened their arguments in a second, broader, trial in which the pair are charged with genocide as well as further crimes of humanity and war crimes. The court was adjourned after Nuon Chea threatened the court with a boycott and the defence teams of both ac-
cused later stormed out. “As long as a decision (by) the special penal (court) is not coming, we will not continue with these proceedings,” said Victor Koppe, Nuon Chea’s lawyer, on Saturday, adding they also wanted time to appeal his first conviction. Led by “Brother Number One” Pol Pot, who died in 1998 without ever facing justice, the Khmer Rouge dismantled modern society in their quest for an agrarian utopia. Nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s population was wiped out by starvation or execution. A spokesman for the UNbacked court said Saturday the tribunal would shortly “issue a judicial decision which will address the behaviour of the defence lawyers”. The Khmer Rouge court has been hit by chronic cash shortages – relying almost entirely on foreign donations – ever since its inception as well as being dogged by al
China executed 2,400 last year: rights group THE WORLD’S TOP EXECUTIONER China put 2,400 people to death last year, a US-based rights group said on Tuesday (October 21), shedding rare light on a statistic Beijing considers a state secret. The figure was a fall of 20 percent from 2012, the Dui Hua Foundation said, and a fraction of the 12,000 in 2002. China is so reticent on the issue that it has done nothing to publicise the long-term decline in its use of the death penalty. But it still executes more people than every other country put together, rights groups say. The total for the rest of the world combined was 778 people in 2013, according to campaign group Amnesty International’s annual report earlier this year. It does not give an estimate for Chinese executions. Dui Hua said that it obtained its figures from “a judicial official with access to the number of executions carried out each year”. But the recent annual declines were “likely to be offset” this year, it said, due to factors including the “strike hard” campaign in the violencewracked largely Muslim region of Xinjiang. Hundreds of people have
The violence-wracked Muslim region of Xinjiang. been convicted of terrorist offences in the area, and last week a court condemned 12 to death in connection with a July attack. “China currently executes more people every year than the rest of the world combined, but it has executed far fewer people since the power of final review of death sentences was returned to the (Supreme People’s Court) in 2007,” Dui Hua said. China’s top court examines all condemnations to death issued in the country, and sent back 39 per cent of those it reviewed last year to lower courts for additional evidence, Dui Hua said, citing a report by the Southern
Weekly newspaper. The Chinese legal system is tightly controlled by the ruling Communist Party and courts have a near-100 per cent conviction rate in criminal cases. The use of force to extract confessions remains widespread in the country, leading to a number of miscarriages of justice. China has occasionally exonerated wrongfully executed convicts after others came forward to confess their crimes, or in some cases because the supposed murder victim was later found alive. In June, the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence for Li Yan, a woman who killed her abusive husband. thephuketnews

Tourism receipts fall 7pc from 2013
T CUSTOMS FRIENDLY PEDALING: Channel 3 actress and celebrity cyclist Aroonnapa Panichjaroon helps to launch the airline’s ‘Bike on Board’ promotion.
PG offers free baggage allowance for bicycles BANGKOK AIRWAYS IS targeting the growing number of leisure cyclists who are keen to pursue their passion for pedalling during Thailand’s cool season, by offering them an additional baggage allowance for their bicycles. It is the first airline based in Thailand and possibly in Asia to promote a “Bike On Board” campaign offering free loading for a bike, in addition to the standard personal baggage allowance, which should be a major incentive for cyclists to book the airline for flights, particularly to Northern Thailand destinations. The first phase of the cam-
paign will run to March 29 next year on the entire network except for sectors that are operated by ATR aircraft, which have limited luggage space. The campaign is being flagged as a tool to promote eco-tourism. Bikes are often linked to fuel saving and green travel habits. Destinations in Northern Thailand attract hundreds of cyclists who take advantage of the cool weather and relatively uncrowded roads for bike tours. hailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported the country’s tourism receipts from international tourist arrivals declined 7.55 per cent in the first nine months of this year. Released last week, the ministry data reported tourism earnings of B807 billion compared with B872 billion during the same period last year. Here are the ministry’s estimates: East Asia (i nclud i ng Asean – 10.2 million visits) posted the highest tourism revenue of B345 billion, but this was a decrease of 15.60pc from B407 billion in the same
period of 2013. The second top revenue generator was Europe (4.4 million visits), bringing in B292 billion, up by 2.75pc. Third was South Asia with 895,000 visitors spending 10.63pc less than last year. The Americas generated 788,825 tourists who contributed B54 billion, down 4.03pc, followed by Oceania (712,176 visits, generating B51 billion, down 3.77pc) and the Middle East tourists (434,461 visits, generating B27 billion, down 7.60pc. T he biggest d rops in terms of countries came in two of Thailand’s biggest markets – China, which con-
tributed B128 billion, a drop of 16.82pc – and Malaysia, which brought in B41 billion, a drop of 18.7pc. Australia also showed a fall, of 3.39 pc to B45 billion, though income from the UK was up by 3.39pc to B47 billion and inflow from Russia was up 3.16pc to B77 billion. The country tourism revenue is predicted to increase to B2.2 trillion in 2015 and B4 trillion by 2018. Last year, tourism industry generated B1,207,145.82 million in reciept, an increase of 22.69pc from B983,928.36 million in 2012. The figures are likely to encourage criticism from
leading tourism industry executives who have very little confidence in the ministry’s ability to assess travel spending accurately. Also they would argue that the methodology behind raw data collection and calculations made to reach conclusions on financial performance is unreliable. They suggest a pooling of resources with expert think tanks, chambers of commerce, the Bank of Thailand and private agencies that have access and skills to monitor spending should be involved in the ministry’s reports to ensure a higher degree of credibility. THE BIG LIST Mascot crazy There are moments when a sports team (or event) has to look itself in the mirror and just question: did we really put that out there? From vegetables to trees, to we don’t know what... Here are some awful mascots.
The Fighting Okra: When the basketball team at Delta State University in Mississippi thought the team’s official mascot, the Fighting Statesman, to be rather boring, they instead came up with the Fighting Okra. Yes, a vegetable is the unofficial mascot of the school, complete with a set of boxing gloves and a fierce expression. It’s so beloved, the Okra has it’s own website, FearTheOkra.com, with commercials where he ends up doing everything from tackling students to hitting people over the head. The Stanford Tree: Again, American college sports gives us this gem: a tree. Even though Stanford University, based in California, already has the team name “Cardinals,” they could never come up with an official mascot – hence, they give the world the tree. It was chosen in the 1970s by the student body and beat out the steaming manhole and the french fry to become the official mascot – no, we’re not kidding. The Tree perpetually sits atop lists for both “best mascot” and “worst mascot” of the year. Herbie the Hammer: English football club West Ham United already has a bear, Bubbles, as its mascot, but the double-act is not complete without the appropriately named Herbie the Hammer which looks like, well, a hammer. The face smiling tool is always looking upwards and has a crooked smile as if it knows a little too much about the opposition. Herbi and Bubbles apparently like to hug a lot during matches. No word on whether Herbie has been able to nail anything down yet. Wenlock and Mandeville: These two were the official mascots of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the Paralympics, both held in London. Even though we can’t quite tell what they are, it seems that they came from the mind of a drunken humorist who saw too may episodes of Battlestar Galactica. Standing on two legs, they have one eye each and highly polished “skin” which is intended to reflect the personalities of those they meet. Still, we would love to see the Fighting Okra and the Stanford Tree team up in some kind of interstellar battle royale against these two. The Orange/Naranjito: This is a tandem pair as the “Orange” is the actual mascot of Syracuse University in New York, while “Naranjito” (the Spanish term for little orange) was the mascot for the 1982 World Cup held in Spain. Neither one gets points for creativity as a piece of fruit would be great to have as a pre-game snack, but not as a mascot designed to strike fear into ovpponents’ hearts.

No second coming for deflated Paris sculpture giant inflatable sculpture that caused outrage in Paris for its resemblance to a sex toy will not be reinstalled after being reduced to a flaccid heap by vandals, its creator said last week. A mer ican ar tist Paul McCarthy, 69, was slapped three times in the face by an outraged passer as The Tree was put up on the city’s ritzy Place Vendome last Thursday (October 16) next to a column topped by a statue of Napoleon. And on Saturday (October 18) vandals cut a support cable to leave the 24-metre high work – which provoked a storm of mirth on social media for its resemblance to a “butt plug” – slumped on the pavement. The FIAC contemporary art fair, which organised for the sculpture to be put up close to the Ritz Hotel, said in a statement that “the artist

New York teacher still doing the math at 100 SHE WAS BORN WHILE Europe was fighting World War I, but age is just a number to one New York math teacher, still going strong and celebrating her 100th birthday. Madeline Scotto, who turned 100 last Thursday (October 16), works almost every day as a math coach at the Catholic school in Brooklyn where she was in the graduating class of 1928. She was off Friday (October 17) celebrating her birthday, but was back at work on Monday (October 20) morning at St Ephrem School. The sprightly Scotto, looking elegant in a lavender
sweater and necklace, said she couldn’t believe it. “Last year I thought, ‘this can’t be, that I’m going to be 100.’ I sat down and did the math actually!” she said.
The artist is known for his controversial and ambiguous works, but even he was surprised at the reception he got in Paris, better known for its relaxed attitude toward sexual matters. “Individuals waited until the security guard’s attention
was elsewhere and cut the cable that kept the sculpture in place,” a police source told AFP on condition of anonymity. “The work slumped down,” the source said, adding that police were investigating the incident. AFP
It can happen to anyone: Obama’s credit card declined APPARENTLY, EVEN the president of the United States can have trouble with his credit card. Barack Obama last Friday said his card was declined at a New York restaurant he went to while visiting the United Nations. “I was there during the General Assembly, and my credit card was rejected,” Obama said at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he unveiled new measures to stem credit card fraud and identity theft. “It turned out, I guess I don’t use it enough. So
they thought there was some fraud going on,” he said to laughter, adding “fortunately, Michelle had hers.” The president signed an executive order which adds “chip-and-pin” protection for US government cards and payment terminals, at a time when the financial industry is moving in the same direction. “I was trying to explain to the waitress, no, I really think that I’ve been paying my bills,” Obama said. “Even I’m affected by this.” AFP
Singer James Blunt calls ‘You’re Beautiful’ annoying BRITISH SINGER-SONGwriter James Blunt has described the multi-million selling song that made his name, You’re Beautiful, as “annoying” and says it was “force-fed down people’s throats”. The song was Blunt’s break-out hit when it was released in 2005, topping charts from the United States to Australia. It sold more than three million copies in the US alone, where it topped the charts, and was number one in ten countries including the UK, Spain and Canada. But Blunt, a former soldier
who served with NATO in Kosovo, has admitted there was a flipside to having such a massive global hit. “There was one song that was force-fed down people’s throats, You’re Beautiful, and it became annoying, and then people start to associate the artist with the same word,” Blunt said in an interview in the latest edition of Hello! magazine, published last Monday (October 20). The song tells the story of Blunt’s surprise at seeing an ex-girlfriend on the London Underground with another man.
The 40-year-old musician added that, because of the success of the track, his music had been marketed to women – and he had therefore lost out on male fans.
“The marketing also painted me out as an insanely serious person, an earnest person and, as all my friends know, I’m anything but,” Blunt said. “I have a couple of overemotional miserable songs that I’m known for, but I think it’s turned that corner now.” The album that contained the song, Back to Bedlam, was the most-sold in the United Kingdom in the 2000s and went platinum all over the world. Several versions of You’re Beautiful have been released, the latest being a remixed version in Japan in 2012. AFP thephuketnews

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
Q
uestion: Hello, can you please tell us what happens on the beach in Karon? Sunbeds and umbrellas? I have already booked but will not travel to Karon when I can’t stay on the beach, I’m 70 years old and the last few years I have stayed for three months every winter. Please tell us!
Gunilla, from Sweden.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office Director Anoma Vongyai replied: Thank you for informing us of your concern. Actually, I get a lot of complaints about this in Phuket and I completey understand your reason for concern. The beach clearing organisation made several people satisfied – but it wasn’t ideal for those who were looking to enjoy the island’s sands in comfort. In Karon, like all beaches in Phuket, our intention is for everyone to enjoy the beautiful landscape. All of the beaches belong to the public so at least you don’t need to worry about spending money on beach umbrellas. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused. Phuket officials also received complaints from beach goers of overpriced supplies and some workers even made threats to use their service – which was also destroying Phuket’s tourism image. I believe that clearing all the beaches was a great solution, since it helped to erase the (bad) image. However, at this stage, Phuket officials are discussing ways to resolve this issue.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014
All of the complaints that have been sent to us are under consideration and we will find a way to balance this for beach tourists and operators. Moreover, I was informed that many hotels have organised a solution for their
guests. I suggest contacting your hotel, as they might be able to provide alternative services for you. For example, they may have beach umbrellas near the pool or other facilities they could provide you with for sunbathing on the beaches. Please do not change your mind, or cancel any bookings at this stage. Phuket still offers a lot of activities, especially in high season. Officials have organised many exciting events. There are a number of beautiful beaches, an array of exciting food options, a unique culture as well as an old town to discover. So, go ahead and enjoy your holiday in Phuket. here is just one week left for applicants to send in their proposals for development projects to the Australian Embassy for consideration for its Direct Aid Programme (DAP). The DAP is a flexible small grants programme funded from Australia’s aid programme and its aim is to advance developmental outcomes in Official Development Assistance (ODA) – eligible countries with projects primarily focused on practical and tangible results. Application deadlines is October 31. A guiding principle of DAP in Thailand is that projects should have a tangible humanitarian or developmental outcome and/or make a practical contribution to building the capacity of recipients in a relevant and appropriate ODA-eligible sector. Funding is available on a not-for-profit basis to individuals, organisations and community groups engaged in development activities in Thailand. Applicants must already be working in Thailand. The DAP programmes in Thailand must focus on at least one of the following objectives: improving community health, supporting education, improve small-scale infrastructure, promote gender equality, support access to disabled persons, support and/or promote rural development, respond to humanitarian disasters, and protect the environment. Most DA P-funded projects fall between B100,000 to B700,000. They must be completed fully before end of May 2015, although special exceptions can be granted up until May 2016. To apply, applications must be made by October 31. DAP guidelines and project proposal forms are available from the Australian Embassy website at www.thailand. embassy.gov.au Queries can be made to the Australian Embassy via dap.bangkok@ dfat.gov.au or by calling 02-344-6371 (English), 02-344-6362 (Thai). thephuketnews

Girl Fight: Phuket’s rising superstar JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

M
ost native Muay Thai fighters begin their careers between the ages of seven and 11 years old. Valentina Shevchenko is one of the few foreigners who started earlier than that – at age five. By 12 years old, she was beating up older girls. By 15, she won her first title and was regularly knocking out women 10 years her senior. “In my career, I’ve fought much more against adults. I didn’t compete in youth competitions. Ok, maybe once just to try it,” the 26-year-old says. “I won that one too,” It’s noon and Shevchenko just finished a two-hour grappling session with 5th degree BJJ black belt Fernando Maccachero at Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp in Chalong – a place she originally planned to stay for a month in preparation of an MMA fight. It’s the same story for most athletes who come to Phuket, falling in love with the beaches, lifestyle and distraction-free, high-level fight training. And it’s been a successful year for the Kyrgyzstani-native: she defeated Hellen Bastos in an MMA bout in February, won the Kun Lun women’s bantamweight title tournament in August and then defeated a much heavier opponent (7 kg more) in a K-1 bout last month. “I’d like to return [to China], it is a big show with a big promotion. It was a pleasure to be there,” she says. Shevchenko comes from a family of athletes: her mother is a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo and her sister is a fellow Muay Thai champion. Her brother-inlaw, Pavel Fedotov, is also her head coach, a man akin to a father figure for her. The reason? He’s cornered every one of Shevchenko’s fights since her amateur debut at 8 years old. “I was worried, of course, because I would see older girls with more experience. But Pavel would tell me, ‘You have to do what you know. Everything will work out if you do what you know’,” she says. Fedotov is a big reason why Shevchenko has gone far in the fight world. One of the 16-time world champion’s favourite stories, however, occurred in August: Defeating three opponents in one night on her way to her latest title at “The Legends of Mulan” show in the Chinese Kun Lun promotion in August. Though currently based in Phuket, Shevchenko previously spent the last six years in Peru representing their national Muay Thai team and holding
training sessions all throughout the country. Just like in Thailand, it was love at first sight: she planned to sightsee for a few weeks but was immediately offered chances to conduct fight seminars, private lessons, and other coaching opportunities. Four months after she arrived, she learned enough Spanish to hold an interview and, along with coach Pavel and
her sister Antonina, bought a plot of land in a small village called Padricochas, located along the Amazon River. “You can only get to it by boat. And before this year, there was only electricity for three hours a day,” she says, “Now, we have it for 24 hours. There are no distractions there and sometimes we train in the middle of the village, kids come up to us and we help teach them some moves.” “For grappling, we train on a small football field. It’s tough and is just straight out in the jungle. So when I train on mats in Lima or in Phuket, it feels like paradise,” she says laughing. The heat, beautiful scenery, and jungle-like atmosphere is where Shevchenko believes her training peaks. Which is why she plans to remain in Phuket for her upcoming fights: a title defense in China this November and an MMA bout in the United States in January. “Here, it is relaxing but with worldclass training. You can keep your head down, maintain focused, and just keep the training going,” she says.

o err is human; to forgive, divine.” While Alexander Pope’s quote is a nice thought, it doesn’t apply to typographical errors in a CV or cover letter. Accuracy in your first correspondence is critical, especially when applying for a teaching position. Typos mean the difference between an interview and rejection – regardless of one’s experience and qualifications. Here is a list of the most egregious mistakes and how to avoid them:

Capital Punishment: Every week, we receive applications to our TEFL training course that state things such as, “I want to become a Teacher in…” or worse yet, “I’ve been teaching english in Thailand.” We can only assume these poor souls make the same mistake in their cover letters. No matter how much importance you want to place on a word, common nouns don’t get capitalised. And unless you’re speaking of spin on a cue ball, English is always capitalised. Furthermore, names of degrees are only capitalised when they’re used as a proper noun. While an

Same same, but very different: Use one homophone for another your digging you’re own grave. See what we did there? Similarly, using ‘then’ for ‘than’, or mixing up ‘very’ and ‘vary’ is equally daft. In addition, everyday mistakes happen every day and they can negatively affect your chances for getting an interview—a positive effect after submitting a CV. Have we piqued your interests, or do you want to throw yourself off a peak? Either way, be careful with these closely related words as well. Avoid words like “wanting”: As you’re reading this, you’re probably sitting down and perhaps drinking a coffee. Perhaps you want something to eat but you aren’t wanting something to eat. That’s because
English vs English: If you learned American English in high school or you learned British English at secondary school, either form is fine, just follow each form’s rules with consistency. Important differences abound; if you can identify which form the employer uses, try to adapt if necessary. Cut out comma splices: Rules for commas vary but one thing is certain: don’t use a comma between two independent clauses unless using a coordinating conjunction. You can also use a semi-colon to take the place of the coordinating conjunction. Caucasian is not a nationality: This one isn’t about grammar but we see it far too often: If you’re filling out a formal application that asks you to include your nationality, please, for the love of all things good and great, don’t put “Caucasian”. No matter how pale you may be, unless the Caucus region recently gained independence and you hold a passport from Caucus, you’re nationality isn’t Caucasian. And that’s a wrap, not rap, folks.

New writers’ workshop prepares students for real world
A
writing workshop in Koh Phangan has been set up, which teaches writing skills, social media, web development and travel writing. It’s no secret that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for writers to find work. Nowadays, it’s all about offering a diverse array of skills, and writers who can multi-task and work in multidisciplinary roles are the most marketable to employers. These skills are also essential for those who are looking to travel and work at the same time. Teaching such skills is the philosophy behind a new writers’ workshop on Koh Phangan, making its debut November 9 to 22. At the forefront of the course is the well-known author, journalist, firstever writer for the Lonely Planet in Thailand, and current Editor-at-Large for Bangkok 101, Joe Cummings, who will teach the course’s 12-hour Travel Writing module. L ead ing students through every step of creating their very own travel blog and online writing portfolio website will be Carl Heaton, founder of the well-established company Web Courses Bangkok. For the workshop’s launch phase, the full course package - which includes 14 nights’ private accommodation at the beautiful Best Western Phanganburi hotel, full tuition, website domain and hosting, and much more - is a modest B40,000, while individual courses can be purchased as well. Students will leave with a published piece of writing through the popular South East Asia Backpacker Magazine, which is one of the partners for the workshop. They will have the opportunity to take part in writing and crafting a six-page feature, to be published in the magazine and website. For more info, go towwww. PIA hosts its first IB Conference
P
huket International Academy (PIA) hosted its very first International Baccalaureate (IB) Conference from October 3 – 5 and from the feedback we received, it was a huge success. Over 140 teachers from Iran, Australia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Malaysia and many more countries came to experience a range of workshops that had an over-arching theme of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mindfulness. Krysten Fort-Catanese, PIA’s Director of SEL and Mindfulness, offered break out sessions, as well as evening information sessions and morning mindful practice. The participants were very impressed, not only with the physical environment and the philosophy of PIA, but most importantly, with the staff they encountered. Emma Homerlein, PIA’s PYP Coordinator, who was responsible for organizing and coordinating the IB Conference 2014, as well as leading the ‘Pedagogical Leadership in the PYP’ workshop said, “I heard many people talking about the friendliness and helpful nature of the staff from the maids to the head of @thephuketnews
Phuket International School held its very first International Baccalaureate conference from October 3 – 5. school. They commented on the atmosphere of PIA as being a supportive community of learners – which was wonderful to hear. Everyone who came demonstrated elements of the Learner Profile by being inquirers, thinkers, openminded, knowledgeable, caring...and the list could certainly go on. Most importantly, we had fun while we learned, we challenged our thinking and debated current theories of learning, we presented, read, danced and discussed our way through three days of inspiring teaching and learning practices. Thank you to everyone, and to all
the parents who supported these professional development days by understanding how valuable they are to enriching their own children’s’ learning experiences.” The three day Pedagogical Leadership in the PYP workshop led by Emma covered theories of leadership; values and characteristics; change agents and research models for implementing successful change in schools; collaboration; and action research. This workshop was for leaders in PYP schools around Asia Pacific, and was attended by Heads of School, PYP coordinators, grade-level leaders and principals.»

Tail Wagging Tutors – a great ending to a happy tail

The Tail Wagging Tutors sessions are one-on-one for maximum benefit, and while for some children just being in close proximity to the canine is enough, others prefer to lie right next to them. “The sessions are available to any child in the Primary school,” says Clare Bolzon, Primary Learning Support Teacher and BISP coordinator for the Tail Wagging Tutors programme. “Every student will spend 15 minutes with a dog every week for six weeks.” For more information, contact Clare Bolzon: cbolzon@bisphuket.ac.th

A
nother long week in paradise, and it was that time to clear my head and expunge from my mind all noise, traffic jams, tuition fees, urban sprawl and the never ending pestering promotion of new shoebox condo convenience – even if only for the weekend, a battery charge was due. Having just completed his tedious mid-term exams, my 8-year-old was almost as anxious as I was for an escapade to oblivion. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: The advantage of living on a world renowned tropical island like Phuket is the plethora of options to facilitate great weekend escapes – whether for a solo, romantic fling or full-on family outing – the aim being to get as far away from the urban-suburban “systematic chaos” as time will permit. And here on Thailand’s largest island, it can be done without so much more effort than making a quick phone call, packing a day bag and turning the ignition key for a 20 minute drive; no need for well-in-advance reservation headaches, plane tickets, baggage sitting, or dealing with customs forms or complicated transport and itinerary logistics; Just rally the troops, and count the miles down until reaching paradise. With hundreds upon hundreds of decent seaside-proximity hotels to choose from, the complicated part is deciding on which one deserves you, and which one you deserve (and can afford). While most 3-4 star hotels cater to couples, group tours, back-packers and business men and women alike, not as many can honestly position themselves as “kids friendly” hotel or resort. Sure, you’ll find a wide selection of hotels that have basic swimming pools or even a kids club, but beyond that, not a whole lot separates one from the pack. That said, as I’m finding out, there are several gems which really make for ideal choices, particularly if you’ve got kids and a family.
Hilton’s Doubletree Phuket family friendly
So this past weekend, I took up a reference to try out the Hilton Doubletree near Surin Beach. We’re not particularly frequent beach-goers, but I casn particularly see the property’s appeal among holidaymakers seeking respite from distant winter wonderlands: Double Tree’s ideal (and 100 per cent legal) location within safe eye-shot of the peaceful Surin beach – this in itself affords the property high consideration. Now I’ve previously met and interviewed their American GM, Brian Connelly, a seasoned hotelier with decades in the business, so there was little doubt in my mind that the property would be up to par. But as I made the 20-minute journey from my Koh Kaeo home, I honestly wasn’t expecting anything special. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by friendly and sincerely-smiling staff. Okay, expected for a Hilton property. Ah ha, freshly-baked chocolate-chip and walnut cookies for all of us. At least my son needed no more convincing. A sweet-smiling staffer led us to our room, a one-bedroom pool suite; the walk through gardens and well-lit corridors was effective in peacefully priming us up for wind down. The room was spacious, and a maid had the common room sofa prepared as a sheeted-cot bed. Having arrived so late, we were hungry, and while the kitchen was still serving, we opted on a friend’s suggestion to take a quick drive to Bang Tao, for a reasonably priced and prepared meal at Wine Connection. Decent pastas and salads, and while wine is not necessarily my thing, I can’t complain about the imported premium German or Belgian brews on offer for only B140. Upon returning to the hotel, it was too late to swim, but we ended up getting our family-fill of pool (the table and stick version at the Asia Alive restaurant), and then proceeded to our room for shut-eye. I made sure to get an early start the next morning. Though the brunch DAD KNOWS BEST: The breakfast buffet caters to guests of all ages. breakfast starts at 6:30am, @thephuketnews
KIDS 7
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014
I wanted to ensure we had plenty of time to enjoy the pool and kids club. The breakfast offering was nothing spectacular, but standard. The freshly-juiced carrot and tomato juice hit the spot for me, and my son had his fill of scrambled eggs, omelettes and pastries. The rest of the morning was a breeze. I enjoyed the pool and and water slides with my son. My only concern is the lack of lifeguards, attendants or watchful
parents. While I was there with my son to gently remind him (10 times) not to run near the pool, or to wait and make sure the slide was clear before going down, several other kids were left to play and run at their own will, perhaps a potential hazard – not necessarily the fault of the property, but more or less parents who don’t regulate their kids’ bad habits. After a refreshing time in the pool, I sent the boy off for a candle making course at the kids club so I could catch one final nap before packing up. Luckily, the hotel let us do a complimentary late-check-out of 2pm. Overall, a good impression, and definitely worthy to return real soon. I have to say though, based on the feedback from both my son and wife, I reckon Hilton’s marketing team were slightly off with “Kids friendly”. I reckon “Kids and family” friendly would be more accurate.

Phuket tongues get spicy kick J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
The process of eating the chili is really enjoyable. It doesn’t hurt going down and it doesn’t prevent you from getting another spoonful.

T
he winner of last Friday’s (October 17) Ghost Chili “Eat A Bowl” Challenge at Navrang Mahal was not from Thailand. He wasn’t even from Asia. In just 47 seconds, American Thomas Tiberii wound up taking home the grand prize of a two night stay at the Karon Sea Sands Resort, much to the surprise of nearly everyone except him. “I’ve been known to eat pretty quick,” he said with a laugh. “In terms of spicyness, it was hot, I wouldn’t say it was the hottest thing I ever tried. It was a good flavour but definitely had heat, there was no waiting around for it to sneak up on you.” Seven competitiors tested their tongues and nerves with a special bowl of the restaurant’s own style of Bhut Jolokia (ghost chili), most of them foreigners with a penchant for the hot stuff. One of them was second
place winner Anton Makhrov, the Managing Editor of Novosti Phuketa and self-proclaimed chili addict, who took home a premium spa package for two after downing a bowl in a minute and 41 seconds. “I really thought ‘Well, that would be good to come in second’ when I was looking at the list of prizes,” he said, “because then I can have one day at home by myself with no distractions.” The bowl of the third-spiciest chili in the world (according to Guinness World Records) brought an unexpected kick to the local’s palette, as three of the Thai competitiors took well over eight minutes to complete the challenge – one competitor could not finish. “This spicy is totally different than Thai chili,” said Phatcharee “Apple” Akhama. “I almost died. Every spoonful I was taking, I felt like ‘Oh please!’,” said Kanyapoj “Polly” Chaiprapan. Navrang Mahal owner Jaspal Singh told The Phuket News that an eating challenge was something very different from what they had done before. In addition to Curry Fridays dinner specials, Singh said they plan to make the challenge a semi-regular event. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he said.
The challenge brought out some heavy hitters who could hold their own with the toughest dishes in both Thai and Indian cuisine. People like Steven Smith, an Aussie who admitted this wasn’t his first go-around with ghost chili. “A buddy of mine had some growing in his garden in Queensland this year,” Smith - who finished third in a minute and 53 seconds. “He couldn’t handle it and was with a garden hose in his mouth for 45 minutes. He gave the rest to me. I really enjoy it.” Despite the competitor’s thirst for heat, the sweat was still pouring from some of their pores and rumble was in the belly. “The process of eating the chili is really enjoyable. It doesn’t hurt going down and it doesn’t prevent you from getting another spoonful,” Makhrov said, “This is a chili for chili lovers.”

GET ME OFF THE ISLAND! Tim Newton broadcast@classactmedia.co.th

W
e all need a break from “island fever”. The traffic, the crazy tourists, the tour buses using the roads as a race track. So let’s have a break. Tahiti? Acapulco? Ibiza? How about the tranquil peace of Naka Island? Not only is it a 5-star break from Phuket, it’s only five minutes away – a short motorboat ride from Ao Po Grand Marina. For tourists looking for a special “island” experience as an alternative to the west coast experience or expats just looking to get away for the day, Naka Island is the perfect place to chill – the island off “the island”. The Naka Island Luxury Collection has been running for just over two years and invites Phuket’s expats and visitors to come over with a special “Day Pass”. Of course you can stay for days or weeks but the Naka Island management have recognised the need for day escapes for locals who just need a break from the “mainland” but the convenience of not having to drive too far or catch a plane. The resort has many boutique experiences for visitors, from the gong ceremony on arrival to the in-room checkin, no waiting at reception. The whole ride is very relaxed and the staff are clearly trained to look after international clientèle with high expectations. The island boasts a unique collection of 67 villas, most with their own private pool. The architecture is somewhere between The Hobbit houses, the town of Mos Eisley from Star Wars or maybe The Flinstones – moulded concrete, rounded corners and sandy colours. It all looks very “back-to-nature” but there is uber luxury at every turn from the fine dining at My Grill Restaurant to one of the largest spa facilities in Southern Thailand, the Naka Spa. A Day Pass to Naka Island will give you access to the whole island, a threecourse meal at the Ton Sai bistro with
two hours of free-flowing beverages, full use of the water sports activities, a 30 per cent discount to the Naka Spa and access to the pools, beaches and nature walks. Plus you enjoy the 5-star return transfers from Ao Po Grand Marina; really, it’s only five minutes away. There’s also high speed Wi-Fi available around most of the island. There is no better place to enjoy the sunset than the Z-Bar. Poised on the northern tip of the island, it provides magnificent views over Phang Nga Bay. And you enjoy the same world-class vistas from the luxury 1,600sqm Royal Crown Pool Villa, a luxury experience indeed and can connect with twoadjoining villas if you want to bring friends or the entire family. Naka Island is not one of the larger islands off Phuket’s coast. There is also a small Muslim village and another backpacker facility on the opposite side of the island. A Day Pass to Naka island will cost B1,850, plus taxes and surcharges. Your luxury escape from Phuket – you will really feel a thousand miles away.

his past week, The Phuket News’ environment desk received an intriguing letter (below) from Walter in Koh Kaeo. We were so pleased with his letter, which included a very practical question, that we decided it deserved immediate and exclusive attention, as the focus of this week’s environment page. Here is the letter, followed by our comprehensive followup. “I’m quite frustrated whenever I check the news and see reps from local organizations, businesses and government offices who only seem to be concerned with with taking smiling group ‘selfies’ as part of their latest beach clean-up ‘public awareness’ campaigns. “Meanwhile, the rest of the island continues to get neglected with new street-side ‘dumps’ popping up all over the island, especially in and near my ‘Moo Baan’ on the north side of town, which doesn’t have a reliable trash collection system, let alone curbside sorting system. “Fair enough – I don’t need the government to teach me about the ‘Rs’. I do all my sorting at home anyway, for recycle, reuse and soon composting. That said, I’ve got several bags of dry plastic trash and non-salvageable paper piling up for months (mostly from my friend who just moved out and left me all his waste to deal with). “Please advise where or how to dispose of this dry solid waste in Phuket – legally and responsibly, unlike my lazy neighbours, who just dump it on the roadside. – Walter in Koh Kaew.” Thanks for the letter, Walter. We at The Phuket News are very aware and conscious of Phuket’s real challenges in regards to waste, especially in light (perhaps that should be dark) of the looming 10 per cent annual increase in solid waste, and not to mention the shortcomings of past waste management and awarness campaigns. Indeed, we could use more people like you advising the government and ordinary Phuket citizens alike. Your initiative to Recycle and Reuse (as well as plans to compost your organic waste) is an effective and valuable step that your neighbours will, it should be hoped, embrace some day. One other “R” that needs to be add-
ed to this dialogue is “Reduce”. The Phuket government has already started to realise the importance of this “R” (see story below). However, their efforts are mostly focused on controlling the types of solid waste that end up at Saphan Hin Incinerator and Landfill, but have little to do with the root of the problem – excessive and unregulated consumerism. And to add insult to injury, officials, and particularly the Pollution Control Department, earlier this year touted Phuket as one of the “cleanest provinces in Thailand”. Those who did the study obviously didn’t take notice of all the roadside dump sites we pass by everyday. In case they missed them, we’ve included a list of some of them with their exact coordinates for future studies (see box) Finally, to answer your question about how or where to dispose of dry solid waste properly in Phuket: as you may know, Phuket has a huge waste-to-energy facility – the incinerator at Saphan Hin. It’s designed to burn off 700 tonnes of solid waste per day, and is currently operating just under capacity. What doesn’t get burnt there, gets piled into one of the five overflowing dump pits surrounding the facility, on top of what once was pristine mangroves. Most municipal trucks on the island make their rounds to the facility daily, to dispose of not only dry and organic waste, but waste water as well. The disposal fee for solid waste
is currently B520 per tonne (that’s 1,000kg). This is usually calculated into curbside management fees, and paid on residents’ behalf to the Phuket City Municipality. However, should you wish or require to make your own rounds to the dump, the disposal process is straight forward. Head to the facility (Coordinates: 7.863197, 98.394138), and weigh up at the muster point. If it’s your first time, you have to register your vehicle and submit your driver’s license (or a cash deposit if you don’t have a license) as insurance that you won’t dump and run. The facility will only charge you by the kilo (B52 for 100 kg), which they will calculate based on the weight of your vehicle upon arriving, and then leaving. I recently went to dump some non-recyclable solid waste: Loaded the back of my pick-up with about six trash bags (non-salvageable plastic and paper mostly) that had been accumulating for months, and set forth. After weighing in, I proceeded up the ramp as directed to dump my bags into a huge, indoor accumulation pit. I was utterly awed by this site. The only comparable smell to this place is that of Wat Yan Yao temple in January 2004 (when hundreds of rotting bodies were lined up side by side) ... My load ended up weighing out at 40kg, and cost me B20. They issued me a receipt.
Communities get a chance to get involved in trash disposal Jirawat Kuramakanok apenthailand@gmail.com
R
aising awareness about environmental issues is a high priority for Phuket, and the nation likewise. Water, waste, energy and bio-diversity are all important elements for a sustainable future and are central to Asean’s and Thailand’s commitment to reducing the impacts of climate change. The Phuket Office Of Natural Resources and Environment held a meeting at the local incinerator, in Saphan Hin, Phuket Town, on October 16, with the aim of establishing a community and
government-scale environmentalactivist group, with a particular focus on waste management. The aim of the meeting was to empower community leaders and other locals to accept more re-
sponsibility for the waste issue. In attendance were representatives of municipalities, the private sector, interest groups, local councils, schools, hospitality industry, as well as non-governmental organ-
isations from all over Phuket. Nearly 800 tonnes of waste is sent to the Saphan Hin facility daily, 60 per cent of which is organic or “wet” waste. Burning such a high percentage of wet waste shortens the incinerator’s operating life. Imagine for one moment that the incinerator stopped functioning – all that extra waste accumulating every single day would certainly cause serious problems for public health, environment, and land management. Moving forward from such hell scenarios, several interesting ideas for reusing organic waste were presented, including the production of vermicompost,
animal feed, cleaning chemicals, fertilizer and charcoal. Such initiatives are all compelling solutions not to only reduce waste, but to reuse it, too. The meeting ended with representatives touring the newly setup refuse management learning centre, highlighted by an initiative to distribute domestic-use compost bins, ideal for businesses and families alike, and available for sale at the facility. Due to the high level of interest and acknowledgment of the seriousness of the Phuket waste issue, a new representative committee was formed and there are plans to hold further productive meetings in the near future. thephuketnews

here was a 21-year-old Englishman who thought it would be great to feel the freedom of travelling through remote areas of China. He decided to randomly hop on buses without having any idea about where they were going. One day while on a bus, he noticed the other passengers looking at him strangely and found it odd that they stood instead of choosing to sit down next to him. Then a beautiful Chinese girl boarded the bus and sat down beside him. The woman asked him, “Do you know where you are going?” “I have no idea,” replied the man with a smile, “I’m
just backpacking around the country. I got on this bus without looking at the destination.” “Well I must warn you that you are in danger. The next stop is the end of the line,” said the woman. “It is a small village that has a reputation. The people who live there eat Western tourists who become lost. They are cannibals.” The man couldn’t believe what she was saying. At first, he thought she must be joking. “Surely you can’t be serious,” he said. “Look around,” she said, “all of the passengers on this bus are from that village.” The young man realised that all of the other passengers were staring at him hungrily and licking their lips. He was
frightened. Just then, he felt the bus begin to slow down as it ascended a steep mountain road. “This is our chance,” she said, “let’s go.” They ran down the aisle and jumped out of an emergency exit. They escaped into the mountains as the angry yells of the passengers echoed behind them. As the man caught his breath, he heard the woman laughing to herself. “Now I can eat alone.”

Apple to release iPhone 6 in Thailand Oct 31 Bob James Bangkok Post

ext week, Apple will officially puts its latest iPhone models for sale in Thailand on October 31. Currently only available via grey-market resellers at exorbitant prices, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on sale on Apple’s online store, mobile operators and distributors about seven weeks after it first became available and before 41 other countries get them. Official pricing has not been announced yet but sources at an IT firm said it had received pricing for both models ranging from B25,500 to B37,300. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would sell for B25,500 for a version with 16 gigabytes of storage memory, according to the source. The 64 GB model will sell for B29,400 and the 128 GB version for B33,400, the source said. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus “phablet” will start at B29,400 for the 16 GB version, B33,400 for the 64 GB model and B37,300 for the top-of-the-line 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus. The quoted retail prices for the iPhone 6 are higher than historically charged for iPhone 4S and iPhone 5S models with the same amount of storage. There was widespread speculation
before the iPhone’s September 19 launch that Thailand could have been among the countries to receive the iPhone 6 the first day it launched worldwide. But public comments by an official at the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission confirming the existence of the iPhone 6 a month before its launch might have scuttled those chances. NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith announced that the NBTC had approved Apple’s application to distribute two models – identified only by number – and then, on August 12, tweeted the news. Apple, notoriously secretive about unannounced products, demanded an immediate meeting with Mr Takorn and, according to the Thai industry source, booted Thailand down the launch list. Bangkok Post

orocco’s first solar energy plant will begin operating in 2015, an official said last week, as part of a multi-billioneuro project the oil-scarce kingdom hopes will satisfy its growing energy needs. The so-called “Nour 1” thermo-solar plant at the southern desert city of Ouarzazate will be operational “next year”, Mustapha Bakkoury, the head of Morocco’s MASEN solar energy agency told AFP. The North African country is aiming to become a world-class renewable energy producer and is eyeing the chance to export clean electricity to nearby Europe.
Morocco expects to build five new solar plants by the end of the decade with a combined production capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) and at an estimated cost of 7 billion (US$9 billion). The Nour 1 plant cost 600 million and is expected to have a capacity to generate 160 MW. A consortium led by Saudi developer ACWA Power won the contract to build the plant, near Morocco’s desert gateway city, last September. IN BRIEF DC Comics movie roadmap outlined
DRACULA, UNTOLD
Bloody good time FILM REVIEW J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
Despite obvious holes in the story, Dracula, Untold hits every movie beat at precisely the right time and audiences looking for an amusing time at the cinema will be pleased with the final product.
A
ll monsters have an origin. Dracula, Untold squeezes as much as it can from the neck of history. But there are drawbacks. There are moments where Dracula, Untold has a courtship with shallowness, as if disguising itself with fangs and a thirst for blood is enough to keep audiences interested until the next plot point. It’s a mixed-bag, in a sense, since the transitions are well done and the visuals are spectacular. But when the enemy is rattled to the point of seemingly no return, where’s the conflict? Anybody walking out of director Gary Shore’s first feature knows this was a welldone flick. It’s entertaining when it needed to be, adds a bit of historical-lore with the fabled-source material and the CGI is out of this world. With that said, this film doesn’t separate itself far enough from other action-blockbusters (Read: Lord of the Rings) and superheromegafilms (Read: Hercules) to standout. The film mixes the story of Vlad the Impaler (mainly that he impaled people and grew up amongst those he would later have to fend off) with the legendary vampire tale. The story is impressively creative with its source material, filling in gaps with a broad brush of visuals and an engaging origin (how he became Dracula). But this brush’s bristles left plot holes that are far too big to ignore leaving audiences a bit underwhelmed with certain scenes and story lines. The film begins with a bit of backstory on Vlad III (Luke Evans), the 15th century ruler of Transylvania, who grew up among

Fresh Prince and co. for Suicide Squad? One of the other big plans for the upcoming slate of films in the DC Comics universe is the potential cast for Suicide Squad. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. executives are approaching Tom Hardy, Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie and Will Smith to star in the blockbuster together. Though it is still early in negotiations, the news piqued fans’ interest on the film blogosphere. David Ayer is set to direct the film and it is currently pencilled in for a mid-2016 release which means production starts in 2015.
the Ottoman Turks as a token of loyalty to the Sultan by his father, Vlad II. By the time the film revs up, he is a family man and ruler of his lands, having already earned the “Impaler” monicker despite having kept the peace for 10 years. While on an expedition, he comes across a cave believing Turks are nearby. When he and his two companions discover the supernatural force, he keeps it a secret so as not to worry his people. But when the Turks, led by Mehmet (Dominic Cooper) begin to threaten Transylvania – a tribute territory that doesn’t have a standing army – Vlad III takes it upon himself to use whatever necessary to save them and his family. Despite obvious holes in the story, Dracula, Untold hits every movie beat at precisely the right time and audiences looking for an amusing time at the cinema will be pleased with the final product. The film brings a refreshing take to the source material, filling gaps (and creating new ones) along the way. Watching Dracula discover his abilities and fight off his insatiable thirst is worth the admission alone. All monsters, at some point, come to grips with their abilities and drawbacks. The palace of John Prescott David Brook editor@classactmedia.co.th
Controversy, incident, scandal and gaffes were never far away from this bluff, plain speaking and colourful individual who wielded vast influence and power.
(Above) John Lowe, David Brook, John Prescott
G
uy Fawkes failed... fire wreaked havoc. Germany’s Zeppelins were repelled. Hitler’s Luftwaffe bombed it during the London Blitz, but the Palace of Westminster still stands proudly on a site which dates back to the 11th Century. The Palace, commonly known as The Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The first royal palace was the King’s primary residence until 1512 and the home of Parliament until the 1834 fire devastated the site which led to Sir Charles Barry’s creation of the new Houses of Parliament. German bombing during the World War II Blitzkrieg completely destroyed The Commons whilst a bomb went through The Lords without exploding. King George VI opened the rebuilt Commons in 1950. Since 1721, 53 Prime Ministers have served The House of Commons, with Sir Robert Walpole considered the first (and longest serving) Prime Minister, having led the Government for 21 years until 1742. Various attacks on the House and its members notoriously include the 1605 Gunpowder Plot which would have destroyed the Palace, killed the King and most of the aristocracy. Other bombings occurred in 1885 and 1974, whilst in 1979 a car bomb killed prominent politician Airey Neave. Over the years, leaflets, tear gas canisters, bags of flour and even horse manure have been tossed into the Commons Chamber.
Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, was even assassinated (1812), whilst on a less extreme occasion (1976), Shadow Industry Secretary (later Deputy Prime Minister) Michael Heseltine notoriously seized the Ceremonial Mace during heated debate and threatened Labour benches. But it was another Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, who earned a bigger reputation. Controversy, incident, scandal and gaffes were never far away from this bluff, plain speaking and colourful individual who wielded vast influence and power. Seemingly a blunt Yorkshireman, John Leslie Prescott was actually born in North Wales (1938). He entered Parliament in 1970 and represented Hull for forty years. In 1994 he became Labour Deputy Leader; and after Blair’s runaway 1997 election victory he was appointed Deputy PM and head of the newly created ‘super’ Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions.
Most famously, perhaps, is Prescott’s “Rumble in Rhyl” – the former amateur boxer responding to an egg throwing protestor during the 2001 election campaign with a straight left to the jaw. He resigned as Deputy PM in 2007, retired as MP in 2010 and entered the House of Lords as “Baron Prescott, of Kingston upon Hull in the County of East Yorkshire”; he may not be a Yorkshireman but he is certainly a man of Yorkshire. I was privileged to meet John on a number of occasions. Over a chat and a drink (which we had just launched officially in The Houses of Parliament) I challenged him and several other MPs to play darts. They all willingly volunteered and so history was made as the Deputy PM played three-time World Champion John Lowe in The Palace of Westminster. Figuratively speaking it brought the House down … something Guy Fawkes could not do.

Ronins soaring: Phuket FC hit stride at the right time FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
D
espite a lacklustre mid-season form that dropped Phuket FC to their knees, the Ronins were able to weather the storm and successfully avoid relegation with 2-1 win last Saturday (October 18) 2-1 away to Roi Et United. With heavy pressure and an aggressive attack, Phuket FC were able to fend off a late surge by the Roi Et “White Squirrels” to leave the Northeast province with the vital three points they needed to secure themselves a place in Yamaha League-1 next season. Captain Wasan Natasan opened the scoring in the first half with a 40th minute strike from a Panupong Aramwiroj setup inside the box. Defender Yusuke Sato would once score what would

Ney Fabiano attempts a a header during the FA Cup match earlier this year between Phuket and Ayutthaya back in April. Phuket lost 4-3. Photo: JP Mestanza be the game-winner with a 53rd minute header off of a Daniel “Danielzinho” Lopes lob from a free kick. Roi Et striker Kittisak Jaidee would pull one back in the 70th minute with a rebound shot into the back of the net. After an improbable 1-0
home win over prevoius 2nd place team Siam Navy the week before, Phuket FC are sitting on a two-game winning streak that leaves them hopeful for a top 10 finish. It would be the first time the team finished in the top 10 since 2011 (9th place, 45 points) – their first
year in League-1. With an 11th place standing (43 points) heading into Saturday’s match (October 25) against Ayutthaya FC (6th place, 51 points), the Ronins are already on track to have their best-ever finish in League-1 play. It won’t be easy, though, since Phuket have yet to beat Ayutthaya in the two years these clubs have played. Back in June, Ayutthaya
dismantled the Ronins 3-0, a game that precipitated Phuket’s three-game losing streak (teams scored three goals in each of the Ronins’ losses during that span). Ayutthaya also eliminated Phuket in the third round of the Thai FA Cup back in April in a thrilling 4-3 match at Surakul Stadium. In addition, both teams played to a draw in their two clashes in 2013. Still, the methodology of
Head Coach Reuther Moreira seems to be clicking with players at just the right time. The pairing of Ney Fabiano and Kendall Jagdeosingh up top, and Daniel “Danielzhino” Lopes and Eber Henrique in the middle have energised a once sluggish attack. With Captain Wasan providing support underneath the box and Sato holding the backline firm, Phuket FC look like they have enough to get past the Ancient Warriors and give the fans a proper goodbye before the season ends. Their fate is completely in their hands. Only two matches are left for Phuket FC to finish in the top ten with an away clash at Gulf Saraburi looming on November 1. The Ronins’ final home game takes place this Saturday (October 25, 4pm kick-off) against Ayyuthaya at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket FC.

For several years, YFH has sent boys to train with the club’s youth team to hone their skills. In 2012, YFH sent over Wuttichai Sooksen and Suttipong Yaifai. Both players are now on the Phuket FC roster.

English Premier League 2014 - 2015 Team
Southampton’s Italian striker Graziano Pelle celebrates after scoring the fifth goal (his second of the match) during the team’s 8-0 destruction of Sunderland at St. Mary’s. Photo: Saintsfc.co.uk
Seek and destroy: Saints score eight FOOTBALL
S
outhampton manager Ronald Koeman said he was “in shock” after his side continued their outstanding start to the season with an 8-0 thrashing of Sunderland at St Mary’s last Saturday (October 18). Prior to the campaign, many pundits predicted the Saints would struggle after manager Mauricio Pochettino joined Tottenham Hotspur while key players such as Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers also moved to rival Premier League clubs. But Koeman has done more than stop the rot, with this victory leaving Southampton third in the table, with only champions Manchester City and leaders Chelsea above
them in the standings. Graziano Pelle’s double, as well as goals from Jack Cork, Dusan Tadic, Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane, plus two Sunderland owngoals, saw Southampton to their biggest-ever victory in English top-flight football. “[I’m] still a little bit in shock. That 8-0 is not a normal result,” said 51-year-old Koeman, one of the leading defenders of his generation in a career that included spells with Ajax and Barcelona as well as 78 caps for Holland. “I’m very proud about the second half. We have 17 players out in the international break and if you show that ambition until the last second it is great. That was important.” One superstition in English football is that being named manager of the month means your team is bound to lose its
next fixture. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he was glad Koeman, not him, had won the latest Premier League version of the award but the delighted Saints boss said: “Maybe I thank Mourinho for that, he gave my players motivation. Meanwhile Sunderland manager Gus Poyet was left contemplating one of his worst days in football. “Where do I start? First, it was the most embarrassing (moment) I’ve had on a football pitch without any doubt,” he said. The beating left club management with such a sour taste in their mouths, they’ve promised to refund the price of the ticket to fans who were in attendance. Meanwhile, West Ham striker Diafra Sakho scored his sixth goal in six matches as West Ham rose to fourth in the English Premier League with a 3-1 win at Burnley on. The 24-year-old Senegalese, who joined the Londoners in mid-year from French club Metz, nodded the Hammers in front four minutes after half-time. In other matches, Sergio Aguero fired a four-goal blast as Manchester City thrashed 10-man Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in a remarkable EPL clash featuring four penalties at Eastlands last Saturday (Oc-
tober 18). Aguero was the headline act in a memorable encounter as Manuel Pellegrini’s secondplaced team closed the gap on Chelsea, a team that won on the road against Crystal Palace 2-1 later on Saturday (October 18). Daley Blind rescued spluttering Manchester United with a dramatic late equaliser in Monday’s (October 20) 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns. Albion had twice led through Stephane Sessegnon and Saido Berahino, but United avoided an embarrassing defeat as substitute Marouane Fellaini equalised with his first United goal before Blind scored the second leveller in the 87th minute to ensure Louis van Gaal’s side stretched their unbeaten run to three matches. United’s erratic display was another reminder to van Gaal that his team remain very much a work in progress. They are without an away league win this season, suggesting they are a long way from rivalling Manchester City and Chelsea for the title this term. “I’m very disappointed because we played our best match of the season and the result is not good enough,” van Gaal said. McKenzie reign unravelled within tough few days RUGBY EWEN MCKENZIE HAS painstakingly put together an impeccable career as a player and coach only to see his 2015 World Cup dreams unravel in a matter of days. The 1991 World Cupwinning front-rower served apprenticeships under two Wallabies coaches and impressed in Super rugby, winning the 2011 title with Queensland Reds. He was appointed as Wallabies coach last year, and managed 11 wins from 22 Tests as he sought to build a team which could win the next World Cup. But his sudden resignation last Saturday (October 18), which follows days of speculation over a player revolt and his private life, leaves his legacy in tatters. There were no signs of the turmoil to come even earlier this month, when news broke of an in-flight bust-up between team business manager Di Patston and back Kurtley Beale. Beale, whose chequered past includes rehabilitation for alcohol abuse, was suspended and Patston left early from the trip to
Argentina, where Australia lost 21-17. The accusations against Beale deepened on the team’s return, when he was accused of sending “deeply offensive” text messages relating to a staff member. But the saga took an unforeseen twist last week when a stony-faced McKenzie was forced to deny having an intimate relationship with Patston. Patston promptly quit, citing stress, while senior players voiced their support for Beale and hoped he would not be sacked. With McKenzie’s position difficult, it was not altogether surprising that he chose to resign, a decision that was announced immediately after the 28-29 loss to New Zealand. “I’ve been unhappy with a bunch of things and the easiest thing for me is to exit stage left,” he told media. “I’ll leave you guys to speculate or ponder. I’ll write a chapter in my book.” Under McKenzie, the Wallabies lost five matches against New Zealand and drew one, while they won one and lost three against the Springboks. AFP

n just three weeks, the Phuket sport scene is going to get a shot in the arm courtesy of 3,000 athletes from 47 countries. With the 4th Asian Beach Games taking place between November 14–27, organisers have begun their final
preparations in anticipation of what will be one of the biggest sporting events to hit the island in the last decade. Karon Beach will be the site of several sporting events (nine in total), with everything from Sambo to marathon swimming, water polo, bodybuilding, beach handball, and beach basketball taking place on the west coast. In addition,

Patong Beach will also host several events (10 in total), including sepak takraw, kabaddi, beach wrestling, foootvolley, jet skiing events, Ju-jitsu, kurash, Muay Thai, petanque, and beach athletics. The air park on Muang Chaofa Road, off Chaofa West Rd, will be the home

India suspends future tours to West Indies CRICKET INDIA’S CRICKET CHIEFS last week suspended future tours to the Caribbean following the West Indies’ decision the week before to abandon their visit to India. “All bilateral tours between BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) stand suspended,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement. India were scheduled to tour the Caribbean in February-March 2016 to play three
Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 international. The BCCI also announced it would “initiate legal proceedings” against the WICB. India’s cricket
chief had warned of “serious action” against the West Indies for abandoning their tour. Tuesday’s (October 21) statement comes after the BCCI’s working committee
held an emergency meeting in Hyderabad. India’s away tours usually generate huge sponsorship money for the host nation due to the country’s large cricketviewing population. The West Indies cut short their tour of India on Friday (October 17) due to an internal payment disputed. We s t I nd ie s c a pt a i n Dwayne Bravo had said before the start of the tour on October 8 that the players had not accepted the payment agreement signed on their behalf by the West Indies Players Association.
