he high season has begun and the tourists are coming into Phuket by the thousands every day. This has put extra pressure on the authorities to come up with solutions that will satisfy the demand for loungers, umbrellas, and food and drink on the beaches, yet keep everything orderly.

Former Governor Maitri Inthusut posted an announcement on every beach in July, laying down the rules after the beaches were “reorganised” at the order of the National Council for Peace and Order. The announcement warned, “If anyone tries to alter the beach landscape or is caught violating the details of this order, they will face legal action.” This order is still in force. But how effective is it? When The Phuket News

inspected the beaches on Tuesday and Wednesday this week (November 25 and 26) this is what we found: Kata Noi: Some tourists have brought their umbrellas or towels, and beach vendors are selling food or massages. Kata Yai: Temporary massage shops

and beverage vendors have set up in the shade of the trees along the top of the beach. There were no beach loungers for rent.

Poll results clear: ‘We want sunbeds’

he battle over sunloungers and umbrellas on Phuket’s beaches has been raging for weeks on social media, apparently divided into two opposing camps: those who want the chairs and umbrellas back and those who don’t. In a Phuket News poll, participants were asked, “Should beach-chair, umbrella and massage services be allowed back onto Phuket beaches?” and requested to choose from five possibilities: Absolutely! Please bring it back to the way it used to be; Definitely not! The beach is public space, and it's wonderful the way it is now; Yes, but only allowed to operate in special zones of the beaches/some beaches; Yes, but only if the operations are transparently regulated by the local authorities; or Undecided/neutral. I

Creeping back onto the beaches understand and agree with both sides. The poll, now closed, shows the vast majority of voters – 76 per cent – want everything put back the way it was, with beach chairs laid out, ready for renting to tourists. The naysayers trailed, with 21pc voting for “Definitely not!” Out of the 790 people who voted, 38pc of them were Thai, closely followed by foreign

tourists, with 36 pc. The remainder of the voters were foreign expats. Among the foreign tourists a clear 52pc were in favour of having the loungers back just as they were, while another 34pc voted for the return of the chairs so long as they are properly managed or limited to certain parts of certain beaches. Only 13pc said they prefer the new no-lounger look of the beaches.

There were also a lot of loungers and plastic chairs arranged under the trees at the top of the beach. In the shade, too, were temporary beverage shops, massage beds, tattoo services, and beach chairs for rent. Tourists sitting on the beach chairs said that they were offered the use of a chair when they bought drinks from vendors. Some said they had paid to sit on the chairs. The beach vendors, however, denied this. They said that the chairs and loungers had been brought by the tourists. Kamala Beach: Some beach vendors have set up shop next to the walkway, inland from the beach. Some tourists had brought their own towels and umbrellas but there were also beach chairs apparently set out for rent, though this could not be confirmed. Foreigners who were sitting under umbrellas on the beach all confirmed that they bought them from a shop nearby. Surin Beach: Some private restaurants provide sunbeds for customers. Some set them down on the sand on demand,

but some shops had already set out rows of beds (without umbrellas), which could be rented for B200 a pair. Told about the sunbeds laid out for rent, OrBorTor Cherng Talay President Ma-ann Samran told The Phuket News he would take immediate action to arrest the operators. South Bangtao Beach:

Rows of beach chairs and sunbeds for rent could be seen on the sand – though quite far from the sea. Some are on the rocks above the beach – which are, of course, public land. Laypang Beach (Laguna): There are rows of sunbeds on the sand in front of some of the resorts, along with jet skis and speedboats parked on the beach. Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong explained, however, that some resorts in the Laguna complex have the right to occupy part of the beaches because they have land titles issued before 2004 that show their land extending further out to the west than it does now. “According to their land titles, the land markers are actually in the sea. Before the Asian Tsunami all of the beach front area used to be the owned

land; the tsunami turned that land into beach,” Gov Nisit told The Phuket News. The Chief of the Damrongtham Center Prapan Khanprasang confirmed this, and added, “The last time we went there, a hotel representative vowed that they would sue anyone else who accuses them of occupying public area,” he added. Naithorn and Naiyang Beaches: There are no beach

chair operators or beach vendors, partly because there are not many tourists. Some tourists had brought umbrellas themselves. On Tuesday (November 25) Gov Nisit explained to The Phuket News that the beach issues could be separated into two main topics: beach chairs and umbrellas, and food and beverage sales. He said he was waiting for clarification from the DirectorGeneral of the Land Department about beach chair and umbrellas. atong police have arrested a gang of ThaiBurmese motorbike thieves thought to have stolen as many as 200 motorbikes and shipped them to Myanmar for sale. On Monday afternoon (November 24) at Phuket Provincial Police station, Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit introduced the thieves to the press and gave details of how the gang operated. The leader of the gang was Zeed Chid-eur, 29, from Ranong. The other gang members were Anna Chuaychart, Adam Yoosri and Suradet Khunpakdee. All have dual Thailand-Myanmar nationalities. “Undercover police discovered that there were four members in the gang, which had stolen more than 200 motorbikes from all areas of Phuket, though their main

On Saturday night (November 22), in the parking lot in front of the Rojjana guesthouse, Zeed arrived and cracked the lock on one of the bikes with a special tool.” He said that once the lock had been cracked the bike could be started at any time without a key.

As soon as Zeed cracked the lock on the bike, police pounced. “Zeed would bring the stolen motorbikes to a rented house in the Kathu area, from where they would be picked up by the other gang members,” Lt Col Khunnadet Na Nhongkai, the deputy superintendent of Kathu Police, told The Phuket News. “These members would ride each bike to Ranong, passing through many check

points – the gang had figured out the times when the check points were not manned – and would take the bike by ferry from a pier into Myanmar,” he explained. In Myanmar they were delivered to a dealer who paid B20,000-35,000 per bike. The three gang members who made the deliveries to Ranong got B5,000 per bike, police learned, but Zeed refused to tell police how much he got for stealing the bikes in the first place. “The suspects have all been charged with theft at night,” Gen Patchara added. At the press conference police asked whether or not the suspects admitted the charge. They were met by a wall of silence. The Phuket News asked the quartet how they spent the money they got from the thefts. Again, silence. Gen Patchara said, “There is another bike theft gang active in Patong. They are now under investigation and we expect to arrest them soon.”

P OLIC E A R R EST E D three teenagers on Tuesday (November 25) and are searching for their alleged leader, a woman, after they attempted to rob an Italian tourist and stabbed him in the arm. At 3pm, Karon police arrested Ben (real name not disclosed) 16, Johnson (real name not disclosed) 17, Pon (real name not disclosed) 17, and seized a sheath knife. Af ter their ar rests, the three confessed to the crime and claimed that the woman, Sukanlaya Saetio, 25, was the leader of the gang and the robbery was her idea. Police charged all three boys with attempted robbery, using a get-away vehicle and assault with a knife. The incident took place at around 12:30am when Herbert Wunderer, 59, and Karin Katherina, 54, were walking along the beach on their way back to their

room at the Hilton Phuket Acadia Resort in Karon. Two motorbikes suddenly approached them, and one of the riders attempted to snatch Ms Karin’s purse from her. Mr Herbert pulled the purse back but the suspect reacted by stabbing him in the arm. The gang then then sped away towards Karon circle, without the bag. After the incident was reported, Mr Herbert received first aid while police checked CCTV footage. They spotted four suspects on two motorbikes heading towards Chalong. Police lear ned that Johnson was the one who stabbed Mr Herbert, and arrested him in front of Municipal School in Phuket Town. Police later arrested Ben and Pon at their rented room in Rassada. They are still searching for Sukanlaya who, at time of going to press, remained at large.

here is no evidence that the powers that be in Phuket are taking any steps to rein in the activities of the island’s jet-ski mafia, Britain’s Honorary Consul, Martin Carpenter, said on November 21. Speaking at an American Chamber of Commerce forum to discuss marine tourism, Mr Carpenter said, “There is no current evidence that anybody in the government sector here really is taking this issue as seriously as many people want them to take it.” He said that he had sat in meetings between honorary consuls and provincial governors for six years and the problems of jet-ski rip-offs, extortion and dangerous behaviour had been discussed many times, but that nothing significant had been done. Saying, “I do hope that somebody makes notes, and I’m quite happy for you to write what I’m saying now.” Speaking to The Phuket News afterwards, he explained, “I’ve tried to get the problem addressed through the proper channels but with no results so now I’m trying a different approach to get someone’s attention.”

was introduced but tourists are often unaware of it. In fact, they are still frequently bullied into paying hundreds of thousands of baht to repair minor scratches that in many cases already existed before they rented the machine. Cunningham was so vocal that jet-ski operators would halve their demands if the tourists agreed not to get him involved. But the practice continues. Jet-ski operators and staff have also been accused of driving machines dangerously, ploughing through swimming areas, endangering swimmers including children. And, after being told to take their sales stands and trailers off Phuket’s beaches as part of the Army-backed expulsion of commerce from the beaches, the jet-skis are now returning, apparently with no sanctions from local authorities or the Marine Department. The department’s chief, Phuriphat Teerakulpisut, recently threatened to ban jet-skis if there were any more dangerous incidents but has taken no action so far to back up his words. A Russian tourist died on November 3 after crashing his rented jet-ski off Patong Beach.

Airport bus to extend service to Kata THE PHUKET PROVINCIAL Land Transportation Office (PLTO) is expected to give its blessing soon for an extension of the current airport-Patong bus service to Karon and Kata. Prakob Panyawai, owner of Phuket Airport Bus Express, told The Phuket News on Tuesday (November 25), “We are still serving people as per the time schedule. I have been talking with the PLTO about extending the service to Karon and Kata. “If it is approved the route from Phuket Airport to Patong would still be the same and we would go on from there to the final bus stop outside Karon Municipality [in Kata]. “I still have to discuss [with the PLTO] about stops along the way. “Our plan is to add four minibuses to the system. We will try it out for three months and see what passenger numbers and revenue look like.” Addressing comments

maintenance. So if there are not many passengers [at the scheduled departure time] we transfer passengers from the bus to a van in order to

cut costs.” Jaturong Kaewkasi, chief of the PLTO, told The Phuket News, “We will consider this soon. It would be really good for Phuket.” He added that the PLTO has to give careful consideration to the fare it approves for the extended route. “We have to find a balance between the interests of the passengers and the bus company. It has to be good for both sides.” When Phuket Airport Bus Express was launched, its buses had “Patong Beach, Karon Beach, Kata Beach” painted on the side. But taxi drivers in Karon and Kata warned of violence if the buses invaded “their” territory. The last two destinations were painted over. However, since the crackdown on taxi “mafia” activity following the Army coup, and the arrests of many of those involved, the threats have gone, allowing the bus company to look at the planned extension.

Fake monks caught taking 'donations' TWO PHONY MONKS were caught last week in Patong soliciting “donations”. Manit Keawsen 33, and Sod Namjaidee, 49, both from Suphanburi, were arrested on Phrabaramee Rd after a call from a resident who was suspicious about their authenticity. Both were taken to Kathu for questioning. Officers found 1,000 donation envelopes with the address of a wat in Kanchanaburi in their possession, along with B2,780 in cash and – the real giveaway – some condoms. The two admitted masquerading as monks, and said they could make up to B10,000 a day, which they used for partying and drugs. They were charged with fraud and misleading people into believing they were monks. thephuketnews

Restaurant owners slam beach clean-up A

group of restaurant and beach club owners whose properties at Nai Yang Beach were demolished in the NCPO’s beach clean-up operation earlier this year have appealed to the Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha for justice, claiming they have been treated unfairly as it had previously been judged by the court that they had not encroached on public land. Owner of The Beach Club, Aroon Paewpanchoo, along with 14 restaurant owners made the appeal in a message for PM Prayuth on Sunday (November 23). “Many people have suffered after Sakoo OrBorTor issued orders to demolish buildings at Nai Yang Beach. We knew the OrBorTor was only acting on orders from the NCPO to get rid of illegal structures on public land, but let’s be fair here,” said Mr Aroon. “They [Sakoo OrBorTor] knew that some of us were waiting for the the results of court hearings on the demolition issue but they came and tore down the buildings anyway,” he said. According to Mr Aroon, many buildings along Nai Yang Beach were investigated for encroachment

I want to let the Prime Minister know that residents are being harassed because of the NCPO order to deal with illegal encroachment ... But the courts already gave us the right to be here,” he said. “Some of us have been living here for 20 or 30 years. It’s not right for the Sakoo local administration to accuse us of illegal encroachment in the middle of an ongoing investiga-

tion,” he said. “If, however, it is proven by the courts that the land is actually public land, then we would have torn down the places ourselves, without the help of government officials.” Mr Aroon said he was puzzled that the OrBorTor said his building was unsafe and was built without a permit, only after receiving the NCPO’s orders. He demanded to know why such accusations were never made in the 22 years his beach club had been operating.

Officals open lunch time services PHUKET CITY MUNICIPAL offices are being opened to the public during lunch hours (12 to 1pm) as well as on Saturdays from 8:30 to 4:30pm. Mayor Somjai Suwansuppapana said the extra opening hours would help hard-working Phuketians who don’t have time to visit during normal office hours. “The economy is slug-

gish, so many residents have to work harder and longer hours, so they don’t have time to come in during business hours. Adding new hours of service will hopefully help solve some of the problems,” the mayor said. The Municipality is not the only organisation working longer hours. District offices, too, now deal with birth and

death registrations, change of address, changes to resident registration and ID card issues as usual during the new lunch time hours, which will remain in effect until September 30 next year. Starting on January 5 next year, residents will be able to pay land- and building-related taxes during weekday lunch hours and on Saturdays.

Elephant camp raided, croc seized SANTI PAWAI, DIRECTOR of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports Phuket office, visited the Khaolak Elephant Camp on Monday (November 24) following complaints from tourists that the camp was keeping a gibbon – a protected species – and a crocodile. “The four elephants in the camp are legal but the camp is keeping a Siamese crocodile in a improper cement enclosure, without a license,” he told The Phuket News. “The complaint also mentioned that the camp had a gibbon that was being abused but we could not find it. We believe that it may already be dead.” He said that the chief of Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park seized the crocodile and @thephuketnews

Mr Aroon claimed that he and the 14 other owners had followed correct procedures by appealing against the demolition within the required 30 days of the announcement. However, the OrBorTor began demolition anyway, he said. “The officials should just wait for the court’s decision. We have the right to seek justice. If it turns out the court favours the officials and the OrBorTor, then we will comply with that decision,” he concluded.

Beach operators deliver plea to Gov Nisit MORE THAN 100 BEACH VENdors from Karon met Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong on Monday (November 24) to hand him a letter, headed “For half a year we have had no income.” Their leader, Palat Jantarasopin, head of the Tourism Service Operators Club, explained, “We met former Governor Maitri Inthusut [three months ago], but we haven’t met Gov Nisit yet. We want to hand him a copy of the same letter so that he understands our problems and needs.” “It has been almost six months since we lost our jobs [due to the Army-mandated clean-up of Phuket’s beaches], but our monthly bills, car payment, mortgages and our children’s education costs remain the same,” he added. Gov Nisit accepted the letter and committed himself to finding the best solution for all of the island’s beach vendors as soon as possible. The Phuket News has recently learned that just two days before the beach operators went to meet the governor, summonses were issued by Karon Police to 114 former beach operators to answer charges of public area encroachment.

he island’s police chief says he is confident that serious headway is being made against the illegal drug trade in Phuket, and that more progress will be seen soon with arrests of more key suppliers. Talking with The Phuket News after the arrests of four dealers and the seizure of 19,000 methamphetamine pills (ya bah) on (November 17) in Phuket, Pol Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit said, “Now, we have information about the major dealers and their networks in Phuket. But there is some information we don’t know yet. “We are ready to pounce on them but we have to wait until they take large deliveries so that we have the evidence to put them away. We have to be patient. Police action is having an effect already, he said, with street prices of narcotics rising as demand begins to exceed supply. “Methamphetamine is not so widely available in Phuket as it is elsewhere in Thailand. We can tell from the street price. If ya bah is selling for B80 a pill that means that policemen are not being effective – they are not working hard enough. “But, if the price goes up to between B100 and B120, we know that we are having an effect.” Police are now working out how to catch Jae Na, the Bangkok wholesale supplier identified

after last week’s major bust. “We will not stop working on it. I have already set up a team to follow up on that specifically.” Asked whether police were involved in dealing in drugs – a common assumption in Thailand – he laughed, then said, “Anyone can say what they want to.” But police officers are watched by their superiors so it’s really not possible [for them to deal in drugs]. “The proof will be visible in how effective we are in eradicating drugs. I am serious about this; drugs must be eradicated in Phuket. “If you don’t believe me, just look up my record.” Apart from the round-up on November 17, police under Gen Patchara stopped another drug ring from October 12-14 and seized nearby 2.4 kilos of crystal meth. Interrogations identified the supplier of that haul as another woman wholesaler, a Ms Bee, believed to be doing time in Nakhon Sri Thammarat jail. On October 29 a courier carrying an estimated B2 million in ya bah was caught before he could deliver to a client in Phuket, whom Gen Patchara declined to identify but described cryptically as a person “who loves to read newspapers” and who is now being watched by the police. The recent big busts are in contrast to action during the terms of previous police chiefs, when only low-level dealers seemed to be caught.

n ad hoc committee met on November 18 to resolve problems about overlapping land between Royal Forestry Department (RFD) or National Park and land carrying SorPorKor (SPK) papers issued 25 years ago. SPK land is state land, usually degraded, that was allocated for agricultural use only by poor people under a Democrat Party initiative during the Chuan Leekpai administration. The information we have from each department for Khao Prataew and Koh Lon is still different.” Of the 32,372 rai of land earmarked for SPK use, only 8,089 rai has actually been issued with SPK papers – 521 plots allocated to 439 people. “SPK land can be only ‘Zone E’ forest [decayed forest]. We will check the latest aerial photos of the land and the maps before conducting field surveys.” Although users of SPK land receive an impressive government document, they do not own the land. They may not use it for anything but agriculture, may not sell it and may not lease it to anyone else. They may, however, assign the farming rights to the heirs on death. The rules have been widely flouted, with Land Officials colluding in getting SPK land upgraded to full ownership, and with hotels and restaurants being built on SPK land. In 1994 the scheme rebounded on the Chuan government, with revelations that in Phuket several rich families, including one closely tied to the Democrat Party, had received SPK papers. The scandal forced the collapse of the Chuan government in 1995.

Army sergeant found dead in tin mine pond TWO BODIES, ONE OF them that of a former Army sergeant, were pulled from Phuket waters on Sunday (November 23), one from a lake and the other from a canal. The body of Sgt Jessada Suthon, 31, was pulled out of a tin mine lake behind Rock Garden Village on Thung Ka Rd at about 2:30pm. Officials on the scene said they believed that Sgt Jessada, who was from Phang Nga province, had been dead for two days. Pol Lt Col Kittisak Noopeung, Scientific Specialist of Forensic Office, said that on the body police found an 11mm pistol with two magazines, a mobile phone, cash and a car key – which was for a black Mitsubishi Pajero Sports car that was parked nearby. A check revealed the vehicle was registered to his mother. Police have discovered that Sgt Jessada had left the army and was working as a taxi driver. Earlier on Sunday the body of a 30-year-old Thai man was found floating in the canal in Thalang. A relative of Chanwit Pongpa, 30, discovered his body in the canal and phoned police.

Locals say yes to klong dredge plan SOME 50 RESIDENTS FROM the Kojan Bridge community in Sapan Hin have voted at a public hearing to go ahead with plans to dredge Bang Yai canal as a flood-prevention measure as well as making it more accessible to local fishermen. The canal, which leads directly to the sea from Sapan Hin, is currently so clogged with garbage and sediment that local fishermen can not use the water way to get out to sea during low tides. The sediment and garbage clogging the canal is also blamed for causing floods in Phuket Town. About 22,360 square metres of sediment is expected to be removed by the dredging, which will make the channel at least 25 metres wide and one metre deep, said Phuket City Mayor, Somjai Suwansupana. Phuket Marine Office Director, Puripat Teerakulpisut, said the canal will be dredged as soon as the Marine Department has evaluated the costs and approved the budget. The dredging project is expected to take three months and cost about THB3 million. thephuketnews

ollowing the publication last Friday (November 21) in The Phuket News of an investigation into underage prostitution among Rawai’s Sea Gypsies, Rawai Mayor Arun Soros has leapt into action. He told The Phuket News on Tuesday (November 25) that after the publication of the report he held an initial meeting with the Provincial Volunteer group, representatives of the Tambon Health Promoting Hospital and Ngim Damrongkaset, the Sea Gypsies’ village leader, to see whether a stopgap solution can be worked out until a big meeting to decide on a more permanent solution can be arranged. “I asked the Volunteer group, who are originally Sea People and who still live in the village, to watch out for underage prostitution as well as drug abuse and children begging [from tourists],” he said. “The community leader will send us more information about these matters. I also went to the village myself and got the pictures and names of children involved in prostitution, and details of families that allow their children to go out begging. “We will use this data soon, in a big meeting with other sections involved.” He said that a lack of knowledge about birth

We will have the meeting as soon as possible. “The temporarily solution for now is to monitor the children, to cut off the supply of drugs coming into the village, and to find work for the sea people. “I have already brought 30 or 40 adults from the community to work for the Municipality,” he said.

Lounger floundering As the results of The Phuket News poll into beach loungers and umbrellas (see page 2) show, the big Army beach clearance is not exactly popular with foreign tourists, the lifeblood of the island’s economy. While Thai tourists were overwhelmingly against the return of the beach loungers, 86 per cent of foreign tourists want them back, reflecting a social media outcry along the lines of, “How can we shelter from the sun? Our children will burn and we all risk skin cancer. We’re not coming back to Phuket until you bring back our loungers!” Many took their own umbrellas to the beach and local entrepreneurs were quick to latch onto the opportunity, offering umbrellas and chairs for rent or sale – though the entrepreneurs themselves mostly stayed well back from the sand. Of the tourists in favour of the return of the loungers, 52 per cent were not interested in the background – the shady dealings, the corruption, the wholesale selling of a public facility – while the remainder saw the sense in having some limits or some sort of official organising of the loungers. None of this has been helped by the official confusion over whether tourists are allowed to bring their own umbrellas to the beach. The powers that be seem to be leaning towards a compromise, allowing rented beach lounger operators back on the sand, but with strict supervision by the OrBorTor and Tessabaan around the island. More than 1,600 years ago the Roman poet Juvenal asked, “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” – Who will watch the watchers?

Can Phuket’s watchers be trusted to do a good job? Already, now, there are signs that local officials either don’t care or are too scared to tackle “entrepreneurs” who are once again creeping back onto the beaches. It is also questionable whether all local elected officials are qualified to do the monitoring. After all, it’s pretty clear that at least some of them, before the beach clearance, were making huge sums from selling entire beaches to lounger operators who, in some cases, would extort millions from beachfront hotels in return for allowing guests to step on “their” bits of the beach. Plainly, a great deal more thinking has to go into figuring out a solution that gives tourists the comfort they crave yet prevents corrupt practices from once again being the rule rather than the exception.

‘Dirty cop’ probe expands M

ore corrupt police officers and their accomplices are expected to be arrested in the coming days/weeks as part of the government’s latest drive to reform the Royal Thai Police, from top down. National police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang on Tuesday (November 26) vowed to nail more offenders and seize more assets from those involved in the lese majeste and bribery case against the corrupt cartel headed by sacked. The Metropolitan Police Bureau charged former Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) chief Pongpat Chayapan along with 11 other individuals, including senior officers, with operating gambling dens, taking bribes from oil smuggling gangs, and lese majeste. In raids on Sunday (November 23) police discovered billions of baht worth of assets at six houses owned by Pol Lt Gen Pongpat and CIB deputy chief Pol Maj Gen Kowit Wongrungruang. Besides Pol Lt Gen Pongpat and Pol Maj Gen Kowit, five other officers charged with crimes are Pol Maj Gen Boonsueb Phraithuean, former chief

of luxury cars. The police said the assets displayed were just a small portion of the total assets already seized. Pol Maj Gen Boonsueb is also accused of citing the “monarchy” when taking bribes from oil smuggling gangs amounting to B1-2mn per month. He allegedly delivered B35 mn to Pol Maj Gen Kowit and B118mn to Pol Lt Gen Pongpant between Dec 28, 2011, and July 18 this year. Two other officers, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Surasak and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chattrin, are charged with malfeasance and extortion. Pol Col Kowit, meanwhile, faces deforestation and forest encroachment charges. Mr Sawong and Mr Rerngsak are charged with possessing the carcasses of several protected species. Mr Chob and his wife Tiyaphan are charged with extortion. Mr Chob, reportedly a deputy director of a school in Nonthaburi, lives near a house of Pol Lt Gen Pongpat’s mother in Bang Luai district in the same province. More arrests are expected to follow. t started with silence as the crowd strained to listen to the prosecutor over the radio. Then tears gushed from the eyes of Michael Brown’s mother. No indictment. The white police officer who shot dead her unarmed 18-year-old son back in August in the predominantly African American suburb of Ferguson, outside St Louis, Missouri, would not face trial. Within minutes blind rage would take hold. Agitators went on a rampage, smashing windows, looting stores, attacking a police car and torching buildings. But f i rst, suppor ters hugged Brown’s mother Lesley McSpadden, taking her into their arms. “We’re with you. We love you, we support you,” murmured the crowd watching her breakdown and scream out, wracked with pain. “Defend himself from what? What was he defending himself from? Tell me that. “Everybody want me to be calm. Do you know how them bullets hit my son? What they did to his body? Aint nobody had to live through what I had to live through,” she said. “Why, oh why? Why?”

The protest attended by several hundred outside Ferguson police department degenerated into chaos. “No justice, no peace,” they shouted. “Hey, hey, ho, ho these killer cops have got to go.” The tension built quickly. A police car was smashed and set alight, shop windows reduced to shards. A cell phone store was stripped of valuables. “You need to stop throwing rocks immediately at our police or you will be subject to arrest,” an officer shouted repeatedly through a loudspeaker. Then came the tear gas.

Protesters fled. Others egged on the police. Journalists put on their gas masks. In a backstreet, a panicked young man came running from a car, yelling at police to call an ambulance. Someone was having a heart attack, he said. Officers barred his way but muttered into their walkie-talkies. Help was on the way, they said. Despite the chaos, peaceful protesters young and old stood on the sidewalk, determined to stand their ground. It was about more than the death of an 18-year-old high school graduate who was preparing to go to technical college, they said. “This is something they’ve always done. I’m 63 years old I have seen this back in the days with Martin Luther King. They never change and they ain’t going to never change,” one man, who refused to give his name, told AFP. Some protesters engaged in a slanging match with police. “You are allowed a peaceful protest on the sidewalk,” shouted an officer. “Are you saying that so you can tear gas us and violate our civil rights?” shouted back one woman. “We need our police to be peaceful,” she said. US REPUBLICANS OFfered st r ident react ion Thursday (November 20) to President Barack Obama’s unilateral plan to bring millions of undocumented noncitizens out of the shadows and make them eligible for work permits. “That’s just not how our democracy works,” House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement after the White House unveiled details of Obama’s plan, which lifts the threat of deportation for up to five million undocumented migrants. “The president has said before that he’s ‘not king’ and he’s ‘not an emperor,’ but he’s sure acting like one.” House Homeland Security Committee chairman Michael McCaul branded the immigration plan “unconstitutional and a threat to our democracy.” Republicans, many of whom say any plan to legalize non-citizens who broke the law to get to the United States is “amnesty,” were considering ways they might neutralize Obama’s executive order.

“I will try to defund the effort for him to go it alone,” warned Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican who helped craft landmark immigration reform legislation last year that passed the Senate but failed in the Republicanrun House of Representatives. Congress must soon debate and pass spending legislation that funds government in 2015, and conservatives see the must-pass bills as potential leverage against the immigration order. Several have argued for defunding offices responsible for issuing temporary work permits. But the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees the budget process, indicated such action would

be impossible, because the main agency tasked with implementing Obama’s plan is self-funded through immigration application fees and not through the budget approved by Congress. Texas’s attorney general Greg Abbott, the border state’s Republican incoming governor, wasted no time in announcing he will file a suit. “I am prepared to immediately challenge President Obama in court, securing our state’s sovereignty and guaranteeing the rule of law,” he said. ome 100 people joined the latest meeting held by the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) Phuket chapter on Friday (November 21) to discuss the branding of Phuket, this time with the focus on marine tourism. The panel put together for the discussion consisted of eco-warrior and sea canoe originator John “Ling Yai” Gray, hotelier and Skal President Claude Sauter, Vincent Tabuteau of Asia Marine and Parasu “Por” Komaradat of Blue Label Diving. The discussion was moderated by Natasha Eldred of Shine PR, which organised the event. Rather than have each panel member make a speech, the meeting at the Outrigger Laguna Resort’s newly refurbished Similan Ballroom was thrown open to floor. The result was a lively discussion that ranged from the jetski blight to garbage in the water and raw sewage and silt being dumped on coral reefs, to warnings posted in hotels advising guests of the dangers of swimming in the wrong place or renting a jetski. British Honorary Consul Martin Carpenter made a plea for hotels to put advisories on the back of the door in their guest rooms along with the fire escape instructions. Mr Sauter said he would pass the

Mr Tabuteau added a rider: “There is a point beyond which we cannot go [in advising guests of the dangers of Phuket]. As for garbage, he felt that infrastructure and education are the biggest barriers to cleaning up Phuket. “The major problem is not tourists but staff,” he said. “The guests are more environmentally friendly than anyone else. It’s the fishermen and villagers that grew up throwing garbage in the sea who are the problem. Also, there is no garbage collection or separation [at jetties and ports in Phuket].”

John Gray, who has campaigned for decades to clean up garbage in Phang Nga Bay, said he personally had picked up 9,028 bags of trash from the water, and his staff did the same. The guests, seeing this, also joined in. He then related an encounter with a superyacht in the bay, whose crew had thrown garbage in the water close to his canoes, with the superyacht passengers mocking his guides for picking the garbage up. Mr Gray explained that his staff are on US pay scales. “When speedboat crews are paid the same maybe there will be change,” he added.

Another form of marine pollution was highlighted by green construction project manager OB Wetzell, who said he knew of 15 hotels dumping raw sewage into the sea around Phuket, and 20 property developments dumping silt. “There are no regulations that I know of to stop this. There’s 20 centimetres of silt in [the water in] Bangtao south, from a mega-hotel project with villas selling for US$15-20 million. The coral [there] will not come back. The meeting felt that there was little point in a marketing drive for Phuket until the problems are cleared up.

The last part of the meeting was taken up with a session on the dolphinarium in Chalong, to which considerable opposition has already grown. Three children from the Gecko School made an affecting presentation in which they explained why they were opposed to the attraction (which is complete but lacks as yet the permits to bring dolphins in). They explained that students had spent a day “living like captive dolphins”, confined to small spaces and required to do tricks in return for food. This was followed by a Skype session with American Rick O’Barry, founder of the Dolphin Project, which fights to block or close dolphinariums around the world. He urged people in Phuket to do everything possible to block the Chalong project. “Having a dolphinarium would forever link Phuket with Taiji Cove [in Japan, where there is an annual slaughter of dolphins, during which some animals are captured for sale to dolphinariums]. “If the dolphinarium goes ahead you are partnering with them. The message is, ‘Let the slaughter continue.’” He urged Phuket to use billboards to oppose the dolphinarium, deterring guests from going there, and cited the example of Croatia which, after a campaign, barred dolphinariums and now capitalises on the ban, declaring, “Come to Croatia; it’s dolphin-safe.”

Taxis ‘bigger worry than martial law’ BANGKOK UNIVERSITY Research Centre says that 70 per cent of foreign tourists who took part in a recent survey said martial law made no impact on their decision to visit Thailand. Released last week, the Bangkok Poll surveyed 1,044 foreign tourists about their Thailand trips. The poll was

conducted in the departure terminal of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Asked if martial law in Thailand inf luenced their decision to visit the country, 70.1pc said it had not and 29.9pc said it was a factor they considered. Out of those who were concerned, 11.6pc said it caused

them to worry, while 11.3pc admitted the measure made them look at other options. The poll also reported that 86.1pc said Thailand was safe for tourists and only 2.4pc felt it was dangerous. As to what Thailand should urgently improve, 22.3pc said taxi drivers were overcharging tourists, refused to use meters and also took long detours when told to use a meter. Another 15.7pc pointed to traffic congestion and 12.7pc thought poor English communications were a major drawback when compared with other countries in Southeast Asia. According to 8.7pc of those surveyed the country should have road signs at tourist attractions in English and 8.1pc said police need to seriously improve law enforcement. TTR Weekly

Researchers predict Q4 rise in Thai hotel revenue THE KASIKORN BANK Research Centre (KBRC) estimates that revenue accrued by hotels in Thailand will grow 6 per cent to B141 billion in the final quarter of the year, compared with the same period last year. KBRC noted that hoteliers are rolling out campaigns to attract international tourists. “Upscale hotels will partner with airlines to introduce room packages with air ticket promotions as well as all-inclusive packages covering room rate, breakfast, wi-fi, and shuttle bus services to the airport and tourist attractions,” the bank said. The cornerstone of all the campaigns is a slew of discounts that extend beyond the customer to the travel agents who have been told that even their contract rates are now discounted by 10 to 20pc. The bank claims the last quarter will see a partial recovery in travel to the country with a solid if not record performance for the last month of the year. The stronger booking trends are based on a return in confidence in the country, although there have been some highly publicised violent crimes against foreigners such as the Koh Tao murders that worry the tourism industry. However, the centre said although Q4 will be driven by New Year celebrations and the arrival of the cool season, it will not be enough to offset poor performance during the first nine months of the year. Hotel operators, it said, need to turn to domestic visitors to boost business up-country. To help tap this, the government has approved a tax rebate scheme whereby Thai citizens can claim tax relief on travel expenses. Under the scheme, businesses and private individuals will be eligible for tax deductions on expenses until December 31 next year. The KBRC estimates that international tourists will contribute B97.6 billion, up 6.1pc from B92 billion in the last quarter of 2013, while Thai domestic tourists will contribute about half that figure, at B43.6 billion in Q4. Heavy hitters do battle with challenges of Phuket 2020 H

eavy hitters from the tourism industry met at the Sri Panwa resort on Friday (November 21) to try to map out Phuket’s tourism future. Wichit Na Ranong, “Father of tourism” and chairman of the Indigo Pearl Hotel, was one of the key speakers. At a recent meeting staged by the American Chamber of Commerce in Phuket, he urged the island’s private sector and citizens to come together to create a credible tourism plan for the next couple of decades, that could be spoon-fed to the government. On the same day that the foreign contingent of Phuket’s business community attended the Amcham seminar on marine tourism (see facing page), the Thai heavy-hitters were meeting under the banner of “Visioning Phuket in 2020” – a meeting that could be the first step in the direction Mr Wichit pointed to. Mr Wichit told the gathering that he sees three ways to improve the image of tourism in Phuket. “First, we must monitor the capacity of [the island to receive] tourists. “That includes the airport area, and not allowing too many tourists into any one area in order to keep places from deteriorating. “Second, excellence in every area is a must to make a lasting impression on the tourists. All hotels and resorts must provide full training for

Beaches should be preserved for tourists and residents to enjoy. “As for the problem of traffic, the Phuket plan is to set up a light rail system alongside the public taxis. The city will have to push for the strict application of laws and encourage residents to help combat crime and environmental issues,” he said. Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanarangkul,

noting that Phuket brings in the largest amount of tourism revenue in Thailand, said the island is now being seen as a sports tourism destination following the success of the Asian Beach Games from November 14 to 23. The island had also already proved capable of organising large conferences such as the 18th Inter-Islands Tourism Policy Forum in August. Also at the meeting was Governor Nisit Jansomwong, who pleaded for an end to the mentality that wants to keep pushing up quantity of tourists at the expense of quality. “We must make Phuket a province of ‘sufficiency tourism’ which means that tourists will experience happiness,

comfort, cleanliness and safety while they are here.” There was general agreement that Phuket has met the ceiling of its carrying capacity; that larger numbers of tourists would be destructive. Anoma Wongyai, Phuket director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) – an organisation that has traditionally promoted quantity over quality – commented that Phuket tourism is growing fast but without clear direction. “The city does not need many tourists to come and strip away our natural resources. We want to attract high-end tourists. So we must be clear in the way we present ourselves in the world tourism market. “By 2020, Phuket must

replace its image of beach tourism with the more modern version of tourism, which means we must improve our roads and infrastructure and make adjustments to the laws to accommodate with our new target group of tourists. “We must also encourage and improve the morality of people in general, to reduce corruption.” Suchalermporn Poramajareonroj, CEO of Maxicorp-Sugarpalm Hotel and Sugar Marina, commented, “I want to see the growth lasting a long time, and not simply counting how many tourists we have each year. “The more tourists we have, the more problems we have to deal with.” The meeting was organised by the Siam Commercial Bank’s Private Banking Department. The bank’s chief economist, Dr Suttapa Amonwiwat, said that Phuket’s economy has great potential for expansion but issued a warning. “Even though we have more tourists, they stay here for four or five days, compared with the normal five to six days. This stifles the tourist industry and prevents Phuket from developing into a world-class destination,” she pointed out. Dr Suttapa said that Phuket must promote itself as more than just a beach destination, adding attractions such as shows, high-end shopping, and promoting culture and art, all with the aim of getting tourists to stay longer and spend more each day.

Songkran Isara of Charn Issara Development Co, which owns the Sri Panwa resort, said that Phuket must take care of safety issues of both tourists and residents. The budgets to look after natural resources and handle waste are limited. “Many agree that we should target new groups of tourists – valuable tourists who will help to contribute in developing our city. Phuket needs more funds to keep the streets clean, to maintain and renew our infrastructure and overall image, so that is is presentable for tourists.” Maitri Narukatpichai, CEO of the Hilton Phuket Arcadia and the Pullman Phuket Arcadia resorts, said, “More foreigners are coming to invest in the province but I think Phuket must make its hotels more modern and beautiful to tally with the model of what it wants to be. “Also, the problem of traffic congestion must be solved as soon as possible.” Boon Yongsakul, Deputy MD of Boat Lagoon marina, offered his vision of Phuket 2020: “We should push the island to be like Monaco. It will be a centre for distributing tourists to neighbouring destinations and connecting with the rest of Southeast Asia.” He warned, “If we do not push Phuket up [the quality ladder] then Myanmar will take this spot and become the focus of the Andaman – they are growing and advancing rapidly.”

Pata releases 2014 monitor report THE PACIFIC ASIA TRAVEL ASSOCIAtion (Pata) has released the final edition of its Annual Tourism Monitor (ATM) 2014 report. Highlights of the ATM 2014 Final Edition include international visitor arrivals (IVAs) into the Asia Pacific region, showing a rise from

226 million for the first period of 2013 to just over 238 million for the first period of 2014. Asia led the pack with an incremental increase of 8.3 million in arrivals. Myanmar topped the IVA growth chart with a half-year growth of almost 29 per cent.

THE BIG LIST Psychic matters Though we don’t have our own Brazilian psychic to warn us of impending doom, these people were just as correct. Some of these other ones, not so much...

Mark Twain: Even though famous American writer Mark Twain (born Samuel Clemens) wasn’t exactly a psychic, the author did predict two things correctly. Twain claimed to have foreseen his brother’s death in a prophetic dream, where his brother laid in a coffin resting between two chair at their sister’s home. His brother was killed weeks later in a boating accident and the funeral was arranged in the exact same way as his dream, which he had not told his sister about. Secondly, he predicted his own death in 1910: he was born in 1835 when Halley’s Comet was visible and correctly said he would die the same year it would reappear – 1910. Edgar Cayce: Known as the spiritual father of the New Age movement, Edgar Cayce was one of the most well-documented psychics of the 20th century. He was said to go into a meditative state and answer questions about reincarnation, future events, time, space and spirituality. His clients included US President Woodrow Wilson, inventor thomas Edison and composer George Gershwin, among others. He is credited with predicting the start and end of both World Wars, as well as the deaths of US Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and John F Kennedy. The One: An Australian reality show called The One aimed to find country’s top psychic. Producers would put several psychics through a series of challenges to discern which had genuine psychic powers. One episode in 2008 put 10 psychics in a forest with the goal of finding a waiting helicopter. They were given a map and a few personal items from the pilot. Only four of the psychics found the chopper. Lisa Williams: One of the best known psychics in the world is Britan’s Lisa Williams, whose television show, Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead aired for two seasons (20062007). A second show, Voices from the Other Side, ran for a year in 2008 and followed her on a typical day as she claimed to communicate with the dead and investigated haunted houses. The granddaughter of famed British medium Frances Glazebrook, Williams only gained fame after giving a reading to a senior staff member of TV host Merv Griffin. Oda Mae Brown: A relatively little-known medium from New York City, Oda Mae Brown was at one point considered one of the best in the world. Though she lost her abilities after an incident in 1990, it was well known that Brown had direct contact with a man who had only recently lost his life, Sam Wheat. The entire story of Brown and Wheat’s interaction were documented in the 1990 film, Ghost, in which she helps the recently dead man save his surviving girlfriend, Molly Jensen. Brown is also known for her striking resemblance to actress Whoopi Goldberg (who portrayed her in the movie) and sister Mary Clarence, choir instructor of the St. Francis School Gospel Choir.

Down syndrome man gets 30,000 birthday cards

man with Down syndrome in France got truckloads of cards – some 30,000 from around the world – for his 30th birthday, after his mother put out a call on Facebook that went viral. By the time Manuel Parisseaux’s birthday rolled around on Nov 22 so many cards had arrived his family in Calais in northern France had to store them in a neighbour’s garage. “I don’t understand why it got so big. Manuel is like us, he is moved to tears,” his mother Jacqueline Parisseaux, 61, said. It all started on November 3, when Manu’s mother, Jacqueline, and her husband posted the following message on her husband’s Facebook page, hoping a few people would take notice: “My son Manuel is going to turn 30 years old on November 22. He has Down syndrome.

The cards came by the dozens at first. Then, hundreds arrived from around the world. Soon the letter carrier couldn’t deliver all the cards and they began to come by truck. “We had a few hassles with Facebook because our post was

Exploding excrement topples building in China A CESSPOOL FILLED WITH excrement has exploded in central China, injuring 15 people and knocking down a building, state-run media reported. The blast was apparently sparked by a local man burning waste close to the cesspool, igniting methane gas which was emanating from the pit, the Xinhua news agency said late on Sunday (November 23). The incident in Zhangjiajie city, in the central province of Hunan, caused a residential building to collapse and three

BRAZILIAN AIRLINE TAM changed one of its flight numbers after a renowned clairvoyant predicted a plane bearing the original number would crash shortly after takeoff. Jucelino Nobrega da Luz, who says he predicted the deaths of Princess Diana and Brazilian racing legend Ayrton Senna, told authorities that flight JJ3720, set to depart last Wednesday (November 19) from Sao Paulo to Brasilia, would develop engine trouble and crash on Sao Paulo’s main Paulista drag. Leaving nothing to chance, TAM changed the flight code to JJ4732 after receiving what it termed “indispensable information”, adding that passenger security was paramount at all times. Media quoted Nobrega da Luz last Friday (November 21) as saying he had most recently predicted the August death in a plane crash of presidential candidate Eduardo Campos. Praphan Khanprasang of Phuket Damrongtham Center replies: Complaints about government officials can be made at municipal Damrongtham centers (Ombudsman’s offices). There is one centre for every municipality so just find the one nearest to you. You can lodge complaints in person or by having the complaint passed through government offices. Letters of complaint can be posted by mail or you can make contact via the Damrongtham website (http://123.242.171.10/ Damrongtham/w_index.php), or by calling your local Damrongtham centre. Complaints lodged at the centre are then passed on to the Governor, who decides whether the issue warrants further investigation. As well as handling complaints, Damrongtham offices also accept tip-offs, complaints about land issues and requests for help.

We prioritize urgent matters and try to take action on all issues within 15 days but that time frame also depends on the complexity of the issue. Results of investigations are then returned to the governor so a conclusion or further investigations can be authorized. Foreigners are welcome to report issues to Damrongtham centers and we are working on making English-language services available in the near future. However, for the time being, it’s best to have any complaint letters that are written in a foreign language translated to Thai. If you lodge a complaint we will require a copy of your passport and your address in Thailand in case we have more questions or need to give you updates on the investigation process. Small issues can usually be resolved directly by the local municipality but we should be contacted directly concerning larger issues.

One on one with Mizsy Phuket

huket native, Dorothy Petzold, 17, was recently crowned Mizsy Phuket, the official presenter and brand ambassador for Phuket FC. Here, the Phuket News TV’s Sasha PS – a close friend of Dorothy – speaks with the beautiful Phuketien about modelling, ambitions and more.

Tell us about your background and how did you got into modeling? I am a Phuketian born and bred with a German father and Thai mother. It all began when I had my first fashion show when I was about 6 years old. It felt like a dream come true for me. When I was about 13, things started to get serious. Modelling agencies started to contact me for work, not only here in Phuket but all around Thailand. What’s it like, slowly becoming the face of Phuket? It’s an honour because I was born here and Phuket is my home town. These past few competitions have opened up the opportunity for me to step in the spotlight for the general public. I’ve been modelling professionally for years and my name is known within fashion cliques; however, now people are starting to recognise me all around. What contests were you a part of? The beautiful thing is, Loykratong, a tradition to thank the Water Goddess is an important event in Thailand. It brings me great pleasure as a Thai to be a part of something like that. Mizsy Phuket 2014 contest was my most recent win. To wear the crown for this competition means the winner will be the presenter for Phuket FC. As Mizsy Phuket, I will be announcing news and events about our football club for the upcoming year. What was your most memorable moment as a Model? As a model I do photo shoots, fashion shows, act in movies and commercials. Gigs range from ads for various hotels, recently such as Iniala, Pullman and Angsana, to being a part of Channel 3 TV series. As a model it is often ‘catwalk time’ and I’ve walked for Playboy, Central Y Club, Diamond Thaweesuwan and may more. There are so many memorable moments working in this industry because I love everything I do. The most memorable was when I got to act in a Channel 3 movie called “Por Kai Jae”. I really got to see the work flow of professionals and experiencing working in front of a camera with other actors. Another was the Mizsy Phuket competi-

tion. It was joyful staying at Kata Beach Resort and Spa for three days, participating in loads of activities with them including a makeup class with Ustar, dancing performance with The Artist Phuket, spending time at Splash Jungle and many other things. Where can you see yourself in the future? I will always want to represent Phuket as it’s my heart and home but I do have bigger ventures in mind. First it’s going to Bangkok as that is the main hub in Thailand for the entertainment industry. Then off for some modelling internationally. Hopefully, I will be able to join and compete in Asia’s Next Top Model in the next season. What advice can you give to someone who wants to get into modelling? Be a genuine and humble person, it shines through! Work hard, lots of hours in the mirror, work on posture, speech, angles but most importantly go out and make connections. Do not hold off from opportunities because one thing leads to the next and the butterfly effect begins. The moment you doubt your dreams is the moment you lose, so keep pushing and don’t let imperfections lead you off your path of perfecting yourself.

alifornia artist Kathy Manthei Coulson is currently a teacher of Art as well as the CAS (Creative, Action and Service) and Community and Services Coordinator at Phuket’s British International School. A graduate of the University of California at Davis, Kathy left California in 1996 and headed to South Korea to teach English. After travelling through Asia for a year, she headed to Thailand in 1999 where she made the kingdom her creative space, ultimately drawn to Phuket because of the available art and teaching opportunities. Kathy says, “The lack of art programmes available to me while I was in high school, is what inspired me to hold my own workshops, teach others and be creative. The Art Department at the British International School, is very well equipped and an inspiring creative space for the students.” Kathy’s path as an artist has led her to become involved in various creative projects within her local community, helping others to also explore their creative side. She taught art to homeless and low income women at the Wisdom Project in the United States. Through a grant from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission in 1995, she organised a series of self-portrait mask-making workshops for children. Kathy has also worked with the Life Home Project Foundation, a non-profit organisation set up in 2002 registered under Thai Law. The goals of the organisation are to prevent the spread of HIV, help those infected and provide shelter to HIV affected women and children. The organisation orginally provided HIV infected women with opportunities to attend various Handicraft and Skills Training Workshops, where Kathy says, “We helped the women produce holiday and Christmas cards, bags and shirts. We wanted to try and improve and promote their quality of life.” A new series of holiday cards are currently being made by CAS students of the British International School, with all proceeds going to the Life Home Project Foundation. In 2005, together with the women of the Life Home Project Foundation, she set up Project Neptune, an expressive arts therapy programme for survivors of the 2004 South Asian Tsunami, from throughout Thailand’s affected provinces. Kathy spends a lot of her own time painting and preparing for exhibitions. She exhibits her work internationally, attracting private and corporate collectors throughout Asia Pacific, Europe and the United States. She is a “Mixed Media” artist and enjoys experimenting with different materials. She says she enjoys, “Getting lost in melding and layering acrylic paint, iridescent mediums, oxidising solutions, Chinese ink, metals, wood, paper, copper and gold leaf which is pure magic. I recently began working

Showcasing the latest in motoring machinery and automobile design, the Andaman Motor Show will be back for its 19th spin at Central Festival Phuket next month. “The highlight of the show will be the new Lexus sedan, but there will also be cars from Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford, Mazda this year”, according to Khun Kritphanat Patwarasit, managing director of Phuket-based ND-Productions, who are the organizers of the show. If shiny new cars and motoring gadgets don’t get you excited, perhaps a reality TV star will? “One famous singer from “The Star” will come to perform” he added, although which singer that is will be left as a surprise – for now. Hybrid cars are expected to be part of the line-up, with both Lexus and Honda launching new hybrid drive train technology this year. The Thai-assembled Honda Accord Hybrid got rave reviews when it launched in July while Lexus has been offering hybrid vehicles for over a decade now. The growing eco-car market in Thailand should also be well represented at the show. The likes of Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi,

Ford and Mazda are all producing eco-cars here in Thailand where the long-running government eco-car scheme offers tax incentives to manufacturers. Thailand is positioning itself to become a manufacturing hub for environmentally friendly vehicles. If you’re in the market for a new car, there will be special offers on vehicles and also financing options. With the recent decline in Thailand auto-sales, don’t underestimate your bargaining power – you may find dealers more willing to negotiate, if not on price then certainly with optional extras. Central Festival will be fully decorated for Christmas shopping contributing a festive feel to the event. Last year the shopping mall claimed the “tallest Xmas tree in Thailand” - at 20 metres high, we will have to wait and see what they have planned for this season. The 19th Andaman Motor Show will be exhibiting at The Grand Hall on the first floor of Central Festival from the 11th 17th December.

Precisely. Honda has developed a new fuel-cell stack that’s 33 per cent smaller than in the FCX yet over 100kW more powerful, yielding 60pc better performance. The smaller pack has made way for more usable cabin space, explaining why the FCV has proper practicality for five people. Honda says the improved packaging will allow it to develop more body styles, rather than just a saloon, with hydrogen-compatibility. Makers like Honda believe that hydrogen can be generated from various energy sources and is easy to transport and store. OK. So who else is on the bandwagon?

At the time the FCV was shown in Japan this month, Toyota had announced its fuel-cell counterpart will be called Mirai. And in Los Angeles, Audi and Volkswagen are showing prototypes of the A7 Sportback and Passat that are capable of running on hydrogen. The two Germans are now pursuing their sixth form of propulsion after petrol, diesel, natural gas, hybrid and electricity. Mercedes-Benz also has a fuel-cell version of the B-class, while BMW is rumoured to be developing a Toyota-sourced system for its i5, the third “i’ model after the i3 and i8. Initially the therapy didn’t help Paul himself, but he still went on to study the method enabling him to diagnose specific Meridian blockages and further enhance his success. self, it showed that a lot of bad toxins, preservatives, shampoos and chemicals were contributing to his condition He then eradicated all these from his daily life, started to wash his own clothes in organic shampoo, or oil, limited and controlled his diet and finally found his condition improving. These new changes, combined with the tapping method were starting to help with his anxieties. He has now been free of his condition for the last five years. When he first discovered what was causing his phobia, he completely eradicated all toxins and would only eat plain foods such as chicken, fish and vegetables cutting out rice, peppers, condiments and red meat from his diet. However, now he allows himself to eat in moderation, but continues to be strict with himself prior to big events, such as

TV interviews and talks. His ability to appear and talk live on television is a testament to the techniques he has studied and carried out himself. In the last few years, he has released a book called The Winning Way which is number eight on Amazon and won the Holistic Treatment of the Year 2010 award, as well as casually popping to Hollywood to pick up another award. he Lucky Dragon Learning Centre in Phuket offers programmes in languages, computer studies, email and internet courses, first aid, dance and more. The centre was set up by an English couple who have been teaching for more than 10 years at private language schools, centres and government schools in England, Europe, the Far East and Asia. Philippa Barson, Managing Director and Head Tutor, says, “We came to Thailand and fell in love with the people and the country. So we made Phuket our home. “As teachers in government-run schools, we were unable to give the students individual attention and to make sure they learn to their full potential. So our dream was to be able to give 100 per cent to each and every student, not just have a ‘Get them in, get them out’ attitude as many language schools do.” The learning centre concentrates on the needs of the community, with classes reaching no more than six students, ensuring an intimate and focused atmosphere. The courses are open to both Thais and foreigners with subjects that are taught through different forms of learning. Ms Philippa says, “We opened our own learning centre rather than a language school because it gave us the flexibility to offer so much more to our community, such as offer homework tutor service, maths, computer, art classes and first aid (includ-

ing CPR and AED). “We obviously do languages as well which at the moment include Thai, English and German. “We are more for the residents of Phuket than tourists, and we will also have an Ed visa service available in the future. “All English classes are to EU & British Council standards. In addition, we have special interest English courses for Hospitality, Medical and Law professionals and university students preparing for careers in those fields.”The language centre is open to all ages. Currently the youngest student is a three-year-old Thai girl, and the oldest, a 69-year-old Russian lady. n a previous Happy Habitat column, we introduced cooling tubes as a potential alternative to conventional air conditioning units, which could prove to be a cheaper, more natural solution to cool down rooms, offices and buildings. However, one of the obstacles that such a solution would face in a tropical place like Phuket is the high humidity. Though the cooling tube would move cooler air from the earth into a room, that air would be humid, musty and prone to mold and mildew, and need to be dehumidified to be practical. With every challenge, surely there is an opportunity! One innovative “humidity absorbing” device that is already widely available in Thailand and that may prove to be a worthy “two birds” ecostone, is what is known as an atmospheric water generator (AWG), a device that literally turns air moisture (humidity) into drinking water. You didn’t misread that – yes drinking water can be extracted straight from thin air, and such a

device particularly works well in humid climes! This concept may be hard for the skeptic to swallow at first, but as it is, nearly every building in Phuket already has the core of such technology readily available – right on their air conditioning units. The heart of the technology is nothing more than an electrical powered dehumidifier, which removes humidity from the cooled air. The bi-product is condensed water, or condensate. In other words, that water dripping from your air conditioning compressor out on the balcony was extracted from the air. As for integrating a dehumidifier with a cooling tube, you would have to decide how you wanted to collect and reuse the condensate. If just discarded or used as grey water for grass and non-vegetable plants, then any air-conditioning grade dehumidifer could prove sufficient. The Regin malware was discovered last week and has infected computers in several countries.

Cyberspying tool could have US, British origins

sophisticated cybersespionage tool has been stealing information from governments and businesses since 2008, researchers said Monday (November 24), and one report linked it to US and British intelligence. The security firm Symantec identified the malware, known as Regin, and said it was used “in systematic spying campaigns against a range of international targets,” including governments, businesses, researchers and private individuals. News website The Intercept later reported that the malware appeared to be linked to US and British intelligence, and that it was used in attacks on EU government networks and Belgium’s telecom network. The report, citing industry sources and a technical analysis of the malware, said Regin appears to be referenced in documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden about broad surveillance programs. Asked about the report, an NSA spokeswoman said: “We are not going to comment on speculation.”

Symantec’s report said the malware shares some characteristics with the Stuxnet worm – a tool believed to have been used by the US and Israeli governments to attack computer networks involved in Iran’s nuclear program. Because of its complexity, the Symantec researchers said in a blog post that the malware “would have required a significant investment of time and resources, indicating that a nation state is responsible.” The researchers added that “it is likely that its development took months, if not years, to complete and its authors have gone to great lengths to cover its tracks.” “Its low key nature means it can potentially be used in espionage campaigns lasting several years. Even when its presence is detected, it is very difficult to ascertain what it is doing. Symantec was only able to analyze the payloads after it decrypted sample files.” The researchers also said many components of Regin are still probably undiscovered and that there could be new versions of this tool which have not yet been detected. The infections occurred between 2008 and 2011, after which the malware disappeared before a new version surfaced in

2013. The largest number of infections discovered – 28 per cent æ was in Russia, and Saudi Arabia was second with 24 per cent. Other countries where the malware was found included Mexico, Ireland, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Belgium, Austria and Pakistan. There were no reported infections in the United States. Around half of all infections occurred at addresses belonging to Internet service providers, but Symantec said it believes the targets of these infections were customers of these companies rather than the companies themselves. Telecom companies were also infected, apparently to gain access to calls being routed through their infrastructure, the report noted. Regin appeared to allow the attackers to capture screenshots, take control of the mouse’s point-and-click functions, steal passwords, monitor traffic and recover deleted files. Symantec said some targets may have been tricked into visiting spoofed versions of well-known websites to allow the malware to be installed, and in one case it originated from Yahoo Instant Messenger. In third place was Sweden, followed by Iceland and Britain, emphasising European dominance in the connectivity stakes, according to the International Telecommunication Union, a leading analyst for information and communication technologies, or ICTs.

Hong Kong led Asia, in 9th place in the world rankings, and the United States came 14th. The Central African Republic was last, part of a long list of African countries bringing up the tail of the list. The International Telecommunications Union’s ICT development index takes into account Internet and mobile phone access and use, and the population’s competence with the technology. “Over three billion people

are now online and information and communication technology growth remains buoyant in just about every country worldwide,” the report said. Developing countries are well behind, but catching up, with Internet usage in 2014 growing 8.7 per cent, compared to 3.3 per cent in the richer nations. However, of the 4.3 billion people still unconnected, 90 per cent of them are in developing countries, the study found. AFP

Though it seemed unlikely that a major tech company with a Hollywood studio, gaming services, and more could be hacked, that’s exactly what happened last week at the Sony Corporation. Network computers around the world, including those in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo, were infiltrated by a hacker (or hackers) going by the name #GOP. The hack began with a skull appearing on screens followed by a bizarre message that threatens to release sensitive documents if their demands – which are unclear – are not complied. The hack, which took place on Monday evening, brough the entire corporation to a standstil for some time.

Sony Christmas bundle gets Thailand price

Before the hack took place, Sony unveiled “The Greateast Console Bundle for Christmas” with several games on tap. The bundle, which includes either a jet black or glacier white PlayStation 4 console, will also include the following games: LittleBigPlanet 3, inFAMOUS: Second Son, Escape Plan and RESOGUN. The bundle will also include a 1-year extended warranty service for the console. For Thailand, the suggested retail price is B19,990 (a savings of B5,000). The bundle goes on sale December 5.

Malaysia close to internet censorship

High-level talks are underway within the Malaysian government to begin the filtering out process of internet content that they say “does not reflect local culture and sensitivity.” The country’s firewall would first block content on video-streaming websites to comply with Film Censorship Board regulations. Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Sahid Hamidi urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to implement the system soon. He added the government was responsible for ensuring the public are not influenced by “negative elements” or encourage things against “social and religious norms”. thephuketnews

pparently it’s now an established paradigm for film franchises based on a series of novels to stretch out the final book into two films. Harry Potter did it, Twilight did it, The Hobbit is continuing to do it (I wish Game of Thrones did more of it). Stretching out a book into more than one film is more than doable (I’m looking at you, Peter Jackson), but it’s all about choices. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 – which is actually the third film in the franchise – is a big departure from the first two films. This movie was suppose to be a “prize” for patient audience goers who loved The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. And, while it’s terrifically made with a lot of intrigue, the stakes aren’t high enough as audiences know that certain characters have to stay alive for the last film to work. Audiences get to see much more of Panem, though it pretty much looks the same everywhere. The dreary, grey aesthetic only serves to lull audiences to sleep, and it’s didn’t even have to be this way. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 brings us back to Panem and picks up where Catching Fire left off: Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) joins the rebels in their bid to overthrow the dictatorial government. While the first two films were about the actual games and the control with which the government has over the populace, thanks to distraction and suppression, this last film is about propaganda. For almost the entire film, we see Katniss

IN BRIEF Waltz, Isaac to play villains in Bond, X-Men

Both Christopher Waltz and Oscar Isaac have been tapped to portray famous villains in two different film franchises. Waltz will be playing a reimagining of Ernst Stavros Blofeld, James Bond’s most famous nemesis. Waltz’s character will be named Franz Oberhauser for the yet-to-be-named Bond 24 film, set for October 2015 release. Isaac, meanwhile, has been in talks to play Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, set for a May 2016 release. Previously Tom Hardy and Idris Elba were in talks, but it seems Isaac was 20th Century Fox’s first choice all along, Variety reports.

Oscar winner to direct Janis Joplin biopic?

Jean-Marc Vallée, whose film Dallas Buyer’s Club won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, is in talks to direct an upcoming biopic on 1960s singer Janis Joplin. Amy Adams is already attached to star as Joplin in the film, with a script from producers Ron Terry and Teresa Kounin-Terry. The film would track the life of the troubled singer up to her death in 1970 at the age of 27, which occurred just two weeks after the death of another iconic musician, Jimi Hendrix. The film is espected to go into production in the second half of 2015.

It’s a series about survival, the fight to maintain sanity within a mad world and how freedom is all about choice. At the same time, nothing much happens other than chit-chat. While it’s entertaining to an extent, more than a few scenes simply drag on with little substance for the audience to mentally chew. Katniss in particular loses all the spark and thrill that was built-up during Catching Fire as she stays underground within the story. New characters are thrown at the audience from all different directions and it’s difficult to pin down one performance that shines. The entire film feels like a placeholder for the action to come, like cooking and smelling lasagna only to put it in the fridge. We’re having The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 for lunch next time, hopefully with extra sauce.

Galifianakis heist comedy gets new title

Relativity Media has retitled the Zach Galifianakis led bank heist comedy, which was originally called Loomis Fargo, to Masterminds. The film, which will also star Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Ken Marino and Jason Sudeikis, is based on the 1997 bank robbery in North Carolina that saw the bank supervisor and a driver nab over US$17 million. Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess finished production on Masterminds earlier this year. The film is expected to be released in August 2015.

AKA Sonny Moore, Skrillex is within the top 10 DJs of the world, according to DJ MAG. Previously Skrillex remixed the likes of Lady Gaga (Bad Romance) and Snoop Dogg (Sensual Seduction). The success of his EP My Name Is Skrillex was a combination of the Benny Benassi and Deadmau5 styles of electro with acts like the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. On December 12, 2011, he was also named MTV’s “Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year”. Under the Mau5trap label, he released his second EP, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, along with the club hit Kill Everybody. WADA may appeal over secret Sun Yang’s doping ban SWIMMING

he World Anti-Doping Agency may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after Chinese swimming star Sun Yang served a three-month doping ban in secret, a spokesman told AFP. T he s p oke sm a n s a id WADA had not received full details of the case, while the World Anti-Doping Code says drugs violations must be made public within 20 days. Chinese officials have denied covering up the suspension of the double Olympic champion, which took place between May and August but was only announced on Monday (November 24). “ WA DA h a s not ye t received the full decision regarding this case,” the spokesman said via email, in response to questions sent by AFP. “Once it is received, WADA will review the reasons for the decision and will subsequently decide whether or not to use its independent right of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

Record up for grabs in Sydney to Hobart SAILING THE 70TH SYDNEY TO Hobart yacht race down Australia’s east coast has drawn its biggest fleet in two decades, with last year’s fastest skipper saying last week the record time could be smashed. The fleet for this year’s race, which starts in Sydney Harbour on December 26, stands at 118 – the largest since 1994 – and includes the 100-foot supermaxi Wild Oats XI which last year won line honours for a seventh time. anuel Pellegrini claims Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is finally rediscovering the form that made him one of the Premier League’s most dominant players last season. Ivory Coast international Toure scored the winner as City beat Swansea 2-1 at Eastlands on Saturday (November 22) to remain within eight points of leaders Chelsea and also silence some of the criticism he has received for his indifferent form this season. It was only Toure’s fourth goal of a campaign marred by speculation he is keen to leave, in comparison to the seven he had claimed by the

same point 12 months ago on his way to scoring 24 as he fired City to the title. But it was nevertheless a goal, and performance, which gave City manager Pellegrini great pleasure, especially after the midfielder helped the Ivory Coast qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations against Cameroon in midweek. Meanwhile, Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne capped a memorable fortnight with the late equaliser that rescued a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa on Monday (November 24). The right-back’s crucial 81st minute strike at Villa Park, his third this season, ensured Southampton, the season’s surprise success story, survived to extend their unbeaten run in all competi-

tions to six matches and move within six points of leaders Chelsea. In contrast, lowly Villa are without a win in their last eight league games and Paul Lambert’s team are just two points above the relegation zone. The subdued atmosphere created by the lowest league crowd at Villa Park since 1999 suggested the home fans didn’t fancy their team’s chances. But Villa took the lead against in the 29th minute with Agbonlahor’s strike. It was the first goal Southampton had conceded in seven and a half hours of game time, and the shock sparked them back into action. Earlier, Diego Costa scored again as Chelsea established a seven-point lead at the summit by comfortably beating 10man West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Costa scored his 11th goal of the season in the 11th minute, with Eden Hazard adding a second. Victory saw Chelsea set a new club record of 12 unbeaten games from the start of the season. Liverpool suffered more Selhurst Park misery as struggling Crystal Palace came from behind to clinch a shock 3-1 win over the lacklustre Reds on Sunday (November 23).
