at Vegetarian Fest PROVINCIAL OFFICIALS have issued a ban on the sale – and firing of – large fireworks at the upcoming Phuket Vegetarian Festival, to be held from October 1-9. “The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful traditions held on the island. The objective of the festival is to promote purity of the mind and body and to discourage any public nuisance,” said Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat in a release issued last week. In order to make, order, selling or even “importing” of any fireworks during the festival requires a permit from a local district office in Phuket, V/Gov Chokdee announced, in accordance with preserving the “traditional” sincerity of the festival.
“Also, large fireworks such as Ba Jang, ‘Chicken Eggs’ and rockets are banned during the festival,” he said. Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Teeraphol Thipjaroen issued a notice that he had received the order and confirmed that police will enforce the ban. “The only fireworks permitted during the festival are firecrackers,” he said. “According to Section 47 of the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, and the Equivalent of Firearms Act BE 2490 (1947), the penalty for selling or setting off fireworks in public places without permission is between six months and five years in prison and/or a fine of up to B1,000 or both,” Gen Teeraphol said. omplaints over the dangerous state of the roads at and around the Sam Kong Underpass spurred Raksagecha Chaechai, Secretary-General of Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand, to inspect the Phuket construction site first-hand on Tuesday (Sept 27). While conducting his inspection, Ombudsman Raksagecha confirmed that the contractor had accepted to pay “about” B200 million as a fine for completing the project more than 20 months past the original deadline. “I have come down here again because I have received many complaints from people reporting that the construction made it dangerous to drive on the roads,” he said. Mr Raksagecha pointed out that this was his third inspection of the underpass site. “I came down here to inspect this project in January, in April and now September,” he said. “This project has been overdue since June 2015, which has affected driver’s safety on the road. The delays have been

I believe people will understand these reasons,” Mr Raksagecha said. “I know the Highways Department has been trying hard to follow up on the construction, and while this project has been underway the construction company changed its board, but they still had to accept the B200-million fine for the late completion.”
Mr Raksagecha said he, too, was looking forward to the project finally reaching completion. “Phuket people will love to use this underpass to reduce traffic jams. Some of the complaints I have received from people said that they spend more time on the road than on the beach. I get it,” he laughed. Asked seriously when he expected the never-ending construction to actually end,
Mr Raksagecha said, “I have spoken with the Phuket Highways Department, and at this stage I think it will be safe to say that it will be completed by the end of October.” Phuket Highways Office Project Engineer Chalermpon Wongkietkun told The Phuket News only last week that he expected to finish the project by October 15 – a deadline he set as “final”… as long as no further delays were brought on by heavy rain.

ransport Minister Lt Gen Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has confirmed more officers have been assigned to bolster immigration at Phuket international Airport to reduce long queues of tourists waiting to leave the country. However, the computer terminals critical for the officers to clear travellers through immigration have yet to arrive, Gen Arkhom announced the during his inspection of the new International terminal last Friday (Sept 23). The new terminal has been plagued by long immigration queues since Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha declared the terminal open on on Sept 16. “Every day we have approximately 36,000 people arriving and departing via Phuket International Airport. The most crowded section is the Departure Lounge because there are many tour groups, especially between 7pm and 9pm. This results in long lines

We have coordinated with Airports of Thailand (which operates Phuket Airport) and
they will provide more computers next week,” he said. Meanwhile, airport management is calling on passengers to check their flight tickets to prevent confusion over which terminal to checkin at when departing Phuket. THAI new Airbus skids off runway in storm landing A THAI AIRWAYS NEW Airbus A350 carrying 138 passengers and 14 crew members on board skidded off the runway while landing in strong wind and heavy rain at Phuket International Airport last Friday night (Sept 21). No people were injured in the incident. THAI Flight TG 221 left Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok at 6:15pm and was making its landing in Phuket at 7:35pm when the aircraft skidded on touchdown and its left-side landing gear tracked into the verge beside the runway. The landing gear suffered minor damage, but the pilot quickly brought the aircraft back under full control and safely brought the plane to rest on the apron. Authorities are investigating the incident. Early reports say the low-level wind shear may have caused the accident. Phuket International Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan said, “The incident was really just a minor accident. After the aircraft landed, we had our staff check the it and @thephuketnews

Ms Monrudee explained, “We found grass stuck in the left landing gear and four tracks on the tyre were damaged. Three runway lights were also damaged. Staff discovered pieces of broken glass from landing lights on the runway, so we closed the runway to clear the area. The runway was re-opened at 10:10pm. “The Airbus A350 will
remain here for at least 12 hours so we can thoroughly check it for safety. All passengers and crew are safe, there were no injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation,” she added. Mr Somsak urged travellers to check their flight tickets before beginning their journey to the airport so that their driver can deliver them to the correct terminal. “If people are unsure whether the flight they are boarding is a domestic or international flight, they should check with their booking agency,” he said.
THREE PEOPLE WERE injured after a speedboat became engulfed in flames at Cape Yamu off Phuket’s east coast last Saturday morning (Sept 24). The fire broke out at about 9:10am shortly before it was to pick up 45 Chinese tourists waiting at the pier in Baan Yamu, in Pa Khlok, to get on board for a day trip to Phi Phi Island. Lt Sunand Phetchanoo of the Thalang Police confirmed to The Phuket News that two boat staff with minor injuries were taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town, and one staffer with more serious injuries was taken
to Thalang Hospital. The boat was operated by PCL Transport, formerly known as 858 Insee Marine Co Ltd, Lt Suannd said. “The boat was valued at about B2 million,” he said. Insee Marine was one of the 17 companies raided last month in the crackdown on the illegal tour network syndicate operated under Tranlee Co Ltd. The boat was one of the many speedboats auctioned off two weeks ago among the fleet of buses and boats seized by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) in raids on those 17 companies. A rescue worker attends to one of the injured men at the scene of the accident in Srisoonthorn.
Police probe fatal double hit-and-run POLICE ARE INVESTIgating a double hit-and-run in Srisoonthorn early Tuesday (Sept 27) that left one man dead and a second injured. Police and Kusoldharm rescue workers arrived at the scene on Thepkrasattri Rd southbound after 1:15am to find a wrecked Honda motorbike and its rider and passenger lying on the road. The rider, Sirichai Witsuma, 20, had suffered scrapes all over his body. His passenger, Noppadon Yaprachan, 19, was unconscious. Both Mr Sirichai and Mr Noppadon were taken to Thalang Hospital where the latter was pronounced dead on arrival. No helmets were said to have been found at the scene. Mr Sirichai told police that they were heading towards Phuket Town when an 18-wheeled truck heading in the same direction collided into them and caused them to crash. The impact also caused his passenger to bounce off the motorbike and land in the middle of the road, he was then struck by another passing vehicle, which also did not stop. Eakkapop Thongtub

Deadly surf claims Russian, Chinese saved by lifeguards Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
L
ifeguards have repeated their call for swimmers to obey red “no swimming” flags at the beaches after a Chinese tourist was rescued at Kata Beach on Monday (Sept 26) and a Russian tourist died after being pulled unconscious from the water at Karon last Saturday (Sept 24). “There were a lot of tourists on Kata Beach yesterday, though the wind and the waves were both very strong, making any swimming in the surf dangerous,” Uten Singsom, chief Phuket Lifeguard Service lifeguard for Kata-Karon beaches, told The Phuket News on Tuesday (Sept 27). At about 3pm lifeguards noticed a Chinese man, about 40 years old, in distress.
“He needed help, so two of our lifeguards went into the water with surf boards and brought him safely back to shore,” Mr Uten said. “Luckily, he survived, but he was not the only one – lifeguards had to rescue several others yesterday, too,” he added. Mr Uten noted a lack of thanks from the people whose lives the lifeguards saved. “After the Chinese tourist was rescued from the dangerous waves, he left without even saying ‘Thank you’. He just picked up his clothes and walked away. “But in the big picture, we are not worried about it. Our job is to save people’s lives,” he added. Mr Uten said that a big part of the problem remained tourists ignoring warning flags and verbal warnings from life-
guards to not enter the water. “The problem is that tourists still ignore lifeguards’ warnings. They still ignore the red flags,” he said. Mr Uten urged all people intending on swimming during the current heavy weather to observe the warning flags. “Please swim only where it is marked with red-yellow flags indicating where it is safe to do so, and where lifeguards are on patrol,” he said. “If you have a doubt, just do not go into the water at all,” Mr Uten advised. Mr Uten’s warning followed Russian tourist Roman Yorosov, 43, being pronounced dead on arrival at Patong Hospital after lifeguards recovered him from the dangerous surf near the Naga statute about halfway along Karon Beach last Saturday. Capt Weerayuth Thansi-
risukworakul of the Karon Police arrived with fellow police officers and rescue workers after being notified of the incident at about 3:30pm. Rescue workers administered CPR to Mr Yorosov before transporting him to Patong Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Capt Weerayuth said. “His wife said they came to the beach together, and while she was sunbathing Mr Yorosov went into the water for a swim,” Capt Weerayuth explained. “She said that when she looked up, Mr Yorosov was missing,” he added. The couple arrived in Phuket on Sept 22 and were due to leave on Oct 3, Capt Weerayuth said. The Russian Embassy has been notified of Mr Yorosov’s death, he noted.

Police arrest teen serial motorbike thieves TWO TEENAGERS SUSpected of being involved in several cases of motorbike theft were arrested with six stolen motorbikes in Phuket Town on Sept 18 after one of the teens was involved in a motorbike accident earlier that morning. Phuket City Police led by Lt Col Naruebadin Pangleesen arrested Rut and Da (real names withheld), aged 14 and 17, who were both suspected of involvement in the theft of motorbikes in various parts of the island.
During the course of the arrests, police seized six stolen motorbikes: four Honda Waves, one Honda Sonic, and one Honda Click. Lt Col Naruebadin said, “The arrest of Rut and Da came after we were called to respond to a motorbike accident at the Surin Junction in Phuket Town. The victim, Rut, had crashed his motorbike and was being helped by his friend, Da, who had arrived at the scene on another motorbike. “We have been investigat-
ing several cases of motorbikes thefts in various parts of the island which are believed to have been carried out by a group of teenagers, and after making investigations we suspected Rut and Da. “Officers who responded to the accident call reported that the two teenagers were the motorbike theft suspects we have been looking for,” he said. “When we questioned them they admitted they had stolen nine motorbikes in total.
Rut and Da admitted to police that they had stolen a total of nine motorbikes from various parts of the island. “They took us to their home where we seized a total of six stolen motorbikes. However, we are still trying to trace the remaining three
stolen motorbikes which they said they had already sold to locals," Lt Col Naruebadin said. Darawan Naknakhon thephuketnews

Officials pass the buck on Kata Beach pollution Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
L
ocal officials have palmed off concerns that brown water in the surf at Kata Beach may be from untreated wastewater running into the bay, and instead claim that the unsightly water is a regular phenomenon brought on each year by the southwest monsoon. A tourist forwarded her concerns to The Phuket News last Saturday (Sept 25), pointing out that the brown water was spotted “halfway down the beach, just in (the) Swim Here signs”. “The bubbles are yellow like urine,” the tourist noted. “I have heard there are underground sewage pipes that just pump into the sea. I come from Australia (we are not ignorant about beaches) that’s quite a health risk… “I wouldn’t swim there if you paid me,” she said. H o w e v e r , Wa n c h a i Saetan, Chief of Karon Municipality Public Works, on Monday told The Phuket News, “We have been aware of the black water (sic) at Kata beach for days now, but it is not from untreated wastewater. “We have checked again this morning (Sept 26) and it is dirty water from the ocean, such as old engine oil dumped overboard from boats, that has been pushed

It returns to Kata Beach every year, just before the (tourism) high season,” he said. Mr Wanchai said that much progress had been made in coping with the huge increase in volume of wastewater needing treatment before it is released into the sea, brought on by the rapid rate of development along Phuket’s southwest coast in recent years.
Bus driver plays it safe after steering fails THE DRIVER OF A BUS carrying Chinese tourists from Chalong Pier last Saturday afternoon (Sept 24) made a quick decision to stop his vehicle rather than risk the lives of those on board when the bus’ steering system suffered a failure. Supawatkan Kunnarak from Chalong Municipality and Chalong Traffic Police were called to investigate the incident at 1pm, when it was reported that a bus carrying Chinese tourists had been forced to stop in the middle of Chao Fa West Rd in front of SP Stainless Construction Co Ltd. Upon their arrival at the scene, the driver, Kathawuth Kulbuth, 29, told police he had picked up tourists from Chalong Pier and was heading north along Chao Fa West Rd. @thephuketnews
A worker from SP Stainless Construction Co Ltd was able to reconnect the loose wires to the steering system. When he attempted to make a turn in front of Wat Chalong, he noticed a problem with the vehicle’s steering. “I noticed a problem with the steering so I slowed down. The problem was getting worse as I approached Baan Chalong School so I again tried to force the steering wheel but it wouldn’t turn so I was forced to stop,” he said. Eakkapop Thongtub
“This black water does not come from hotels or people’s homes; and almost all hotels in our area use their own wastewater-treatment plants,” he said. “The Division of Public Works also inspects hotels in Kata and Karon, and our most recent inspections were carried out just three weeks ago with wastewater experts from Phuket Rajabhat University,” Chief Wanchai added. As recently as November last year, Kata public works officials scrambled to stem
black wastewater from spilling across Kata Beach after heavy rain overloaded the volume of wastewater to be treated as the local sewage system uses the same drains that handle excess rainwater runoff. Black water streaming across Kata Beach also made international headlines when a German documentary crew released footage of two Phuket hotels releasing wastewater into the ocean in the early hours one morning in June 2011.
A 26-YEAR-OLD PHANG Nga man was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after a serious crash in Mai Khao last Friday morning (Sept 23). Capt Thanom Thongpan from the Tha Chatchai Police received a call from a local resident at 9:48am reporting an accident on the Sai Kaew beach road in Mai Khao, where it was stated a driver had lost control of his car and smashed into lamp post. The driver was reported to have been trapped inside the vehicle. Police arrived at the scene with Mai Khao rescue workers to find the rearend of a wrecked Toyota Yaris wrapped around an uprooted lamp post. The driver, 26-year-old Patjukom
Rattakarn from Phang Nga, was trapped inside. Immediately after being removed from the vehicle by rescue workers Mr Patjukarn passed out on the road. However, he had only sustained bruises to his body as a result of the accident. Mr Patjukarn was taken to Thalang Hospital after receiving first aid. Capt Thanom said, “Witnesses said that the Toyota came from the direction of the Tha Chatchai checkpoint at high speed despite the road being wet. When the driver came to the bend he lost control and slammed into the lamp post. “We have to question the driver before we can conclude our investigation,” he said. Eakkapop Thongtub

Police probe deaths of two foreigners POLICE ARE CONDUCTing separate investigations into the deaths of two foreigners in two separate incidents last Sunday and Monday (Sept 25-26). The body of 52-year-old Russian national Vladimir Kalamin was found face down on his hotel bed at the Karona Resort and Spa in Karon at about 3pm last Sunday. The body was discovered by a hotel maid, police were told. Police said there were several empty water bottles near the bed. “We found no signs of robbery in the room or assault on the body, but at this time we are not sure what happened to him,” said Capt Nipon Themsang of the Karon Police. The maid who discovered the body, Wannee Chuchom, 43, told police that Mr Kalamin had checked in to the hotel on Sept 18 and was due to check out on Sept 30. “According to staff the man liked to drink and they last saw him on Saturday (Sept 24). On Sept 25 at 2:30pm Mr Wannee went to clean the room and
discovered him unresponsive on the bed.” “The body was taken to Vachira Hospital for doctors to determine the time and cause of death. We will notify the Russian embassy,” he added. On Monday, staff at The Regent Hotel on Soi Bangwan in Kamala reported finding a 47-year-old Swedish guest hanged in his room. Police later named the deceased as “Harem Larsson Anders Fredrik”, who was found hanged by a nylon rope from the bathroom door frame. K a m a l a Pol ic e C a pt Charnnarong Prakongear said police found no signs of robbery or assault in the room or on the body and believed that the Swede had been dead at least three hours before his body was discovered. “Staff said he checked in a week ago. A
delegation of key Chinese officials in Thailand met with Phuket officials on Monday (Sept 26) to discuss tourism concerns and safety issues in the hope of reducing the number of Chinese tourists killed or injured in accidents on both sea and land while on holiday in the Andaman region. Phuket Vice Governor Khajornkiet Rakpanichmanee presided over the meeting, which was held at the Phuket Merlin Hotel in Phuket Town, reported the Phuket office of the Public Relations Dept. Joining the meeting, described as a workshop to address Chinese tourism concerns, were Wang Huijuan, head of the Phuket Consular Office, which is attached to the Chinese Consulate in Songkhla; Zhou Haicheng, who is the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Songkhla; and Zhang Xinhong, director of the China National Tourism Administration in Thailand. “We held a workshop today as a large number of Chinese tourists have come to Thailand this year, especially to Phuket and Krabi, where many of them have been involved in accidents, both in water and on the road,” V/ Gov Khajornkiet explained. “The Chinese Consulate in Songkhla organised this meeting and workshop with local officials to find ways to improve safety for Chinese tourists and to reduce the number of (Chinese tourists)

The PR Dept in its report did not reveal the statistics V/ Gov Khajornkiet said were reported to the key Chinese officials, or explain in any detail what action is to be taken
to help reduce the number of Chinese tourists maimed or killed while on holiday in or around Phuket. However, the Chinese delegation noted that 44 Chinese tourists had died from drowning, including 18 tourists dying from snorkelling activities, in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi from January 2015 to August 2016. The delegation also presented a brochure written in Mandarin to remind Chinese tourists of road and water safety. The brochure itself highlights how many Chinese tourists have drowned over the past 20 months. The brochure is to be handed out to Chinese tourists on tours in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi. The PR Dept in its report made no mention of any discussion on the ongoing crackdown on “zero-dollar” (or “zero-baht”) tours. Witness testimonies delay Krabi sex attack trial
THE TRIAL OF THE MAN who carried out a sex attack on an American tourist in Krabi on Sept 1 has been delayed as Phang Nga Provincial Court is seeking further testimony from two local residents who saw the pair together prior to the attack. olice have so far been unable to trace the parents of two babies, the first left at a temple at Rawai, the second dumped in a bin in Patong, but they will continue their search The Phuket News has been told. However, The Phuket News can confirm that both babies are healthy and in the care of local hospitals. A baby boy placed in a rice cooker box was discovered by monks at a small temple near Promthep Cape at about 8am on Aug 30 when they returned from collecting alms. Capt Somkiet Sarasit, an inspector from Chalong Police Station, told The Phuket News, “We have not been able to find the parents of the baby boy yet, but we will continue to look for them.” An official from the One Stop Crisis Centre at Vachira Hospital added, “The baby boy’s health is good and we are still taking care of him.

Storm blows lifeguard tower away ST RON G W I N D A N D heavy rain last week brought down a lifeguard watchtower found collapsed on Karon Beach last Friday (Sept 23). The remains of the watchtower were found strewn across the ground by lifeguards as they turned up for duty halfway along Karon Beach, explained Prathaiyuth Chuayuan, Chief of the Phuket Lifeguard Service. “The weather finally took its toll, though all 12 lifeguard towers in Phuket have received little maintenance,” he said. “Luckily this one is not in @thephuketnews

The Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO), which is responsible for the lifeguard towers, will have workers inspect and begin repairs today, said Jutapon Thongjarean, head of the PPAO Tourism and Sports Office. “We already had plans to fix that watchtower this week, but the wind and rain
has been too strong,” she told The Phuket News. “We have contacted workers to make repairs there a priority. Another tower at Karon Public Park on Karon Beach will be fixed also,” she said. Ms Jutapon said repairs to four other towers had been ongoing since May. “Three lifeguard towers in Patong and another tower at Kamala Beach have undergone renovations, which have only just been completed,” she said. SOME OF PHUK ET’S best jazz jam musicians gathered at the renowned Music Matters bar in Phuket Town on Wednesday night (Sept 28) to raise funds to pay for rising medical bills for Abner Arela, who remains comatose after suffering a stroke last week. Mr Arela, 64, is father to well-known Filipino musician in Phuket, Ranel Arela. “My father is still in a coma at Vachira Hospital after he suffered a stroke with multiple ischemia last Thursday (Sept 22),” Ranel told The Phuket News. “We need help. All do-
nations will go towards paying medical bills,” he said. “One of our friends referred the case to a brain surgeon in Italy, and he said that my father needs a medicine called ‘Actovigen’ as soon as possible to supply sugar to the brain,” Ranel explained. “Every minute is important. Please help us to get the medicine. All donations from the fundraiser tonight will go to paying medical bills.” To help support Ranel and the Arela family, visit: Facebook: phuketmusicmatters Tanyaluk Sakoot

A piercing statement of originality
A
s the sun sets and lantern poles are raised at Chinese shrines across the island this evening (Friday, Sept 30) for the Nine Emperor Gods to descend from the heavens, this year’s Phuket Vegetarian Festival will quietly begin. (See page 16.) However, today there is more than just one “Vegetarian Festival”, raising concerns about preserving the originality of the festival, which for years has had “copycat” versions erode the authenticity the Phuket-born event. Many other Chinese communities in Thailand now host their own versions of the Vegetarian Festival, including the renowned Yaowarat district in Bangkok, better known simply as Chinatown. The Phuket News understands how citizens in the capital of this Bangkok-centric nation might find this southern
festival a little hard to swallow as Thai culture. Traditionally, folk from the northern reaches of the Kingdom tend to dictate what is “Thai” and what is not. The Vegetarian Festival is Thai and it is culture, regardless what some people’s interpretations of the festival may be. Living culture is exactly what the people of the day make it, whether it be being polite and respecting elders, honouring gods for blessings of purity or singing karaoke. It is true that many shrines have flourished in the past decade or so that the festival has been promoted commercially, but that does negate the fact that the festival traces its routes back 191 years – long before any thoughts of tourism to this fair isle began – to the festival’s home shrine in the small village of Baan Kathu. The practices of the modern-day incarnation of the
Vegetarian Festival may have stepped away from the original ablutions all those years ago, but that is what happens to traditional festivals anywhere in the world. For instance, who could claim that the festivities of Christmas or Halloween are anything like the original celebrations? On that note, in preserving the festival’s own “purity”, shrine administrators over the years have struggled to curtail the spectacle of non-traditional items used for face piercings, such as bicycle parts, sixshooter handguns and beach umbrellas, but they seem to have finally won that battle. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is our festival. Let’s keep it that way. Be proud of the odd cultural melting pot that Phuket has been for centuries, one that firmly includes expats, and let’s lead the way in defining our own culture.

YOUR SAY The only way they’ll learn Re: Phuket lifeguards warn of dangerous surf after Chinese tourist rescue Anyone who is in the red flag area and needs rescuing should have a standard B50,000 fine for taking the lifeguards from the safe area to rescue an idiot in the red area, who is not only putting the lifeguards at risk but also the other swimmers in the safe zone by leaving them with less safety cover. The money then can help to fund the lifeguard program and train more lifeguards. simon01 ...................................................
Hard to believe Re: No murder, but suspicions in Tawatchai death Incredible. This is beginning to look like the denials one might encounter upon questioning a scared 8-year-old child who was found standing alone in a room to which only he had access, beside a smashed priceless statue, “Honest, it must have smashed itself...I didn’t do anything!”
“Based on the evidence, there are indications that it’s possible that Mr Tawatchai’s death is likely caused by another person. But I must stress that it was not a murder,” Heavens, no! Of course not, it was two Burmese migrant workers who must have done this. If it was murder, but I stress that it was not! Seaturtle55 ...................................................
Reap what you sow Re: Brown water swirls in swim zone at Phuket’s Kata Beach More empty lip service by Mr Wanchai, “No problem. Not Thai fault”. As this place continues its race to the bottom, issues like this carry a significant negative message around the world, yet Thai officials continue to focus on bringing more people here. He says hotels have their own waste treatment, they don’t, and does all this waste just disappear? Poorly designed and never maintained septic systems have saturated the groundwater system. Most hotels and housing development along the coast discharge
their filth into the sea on a daily basis, just as they have done for ever. Just as was brought to the surface by the Germans in 2011. Nothing is different. Just more mismanagement on a larger scale. The day will come when Thais will be sitting around on their trashclogged beaches and their brown water bays, wondering what happened. They deserve everything coming their way. Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs Re: Angry vendors file complaint over Phuket Floating Market flop About the fee. It certainly was being charged several weeks back. I had to pay B400 entry, while my Thai family entered the market for free. Seems the owners are double dipping, charging rent from the vendors, and then charge their customers to go shopping there. So I won’t be back. This may be one reason why they aren’t getting much business. That, and the stalls had nothing much of interest anyway. Markthalang

Decapitated body ‘dead for 8 years’
THAILAND NEWS

A
n elderly Caucasian man, whose dismembered body was found stuffed in a freezer during a police raid on a passport forgery gang’s hideout, is believed to have died about eight years ago, making it difficult to identify him. The body parts were found last Friday (Sept 23) at a shophouse on Sukhumvit Soi 56. Investigators believe one of the three suspects arrested after the raid bought the freezer in the Rama IV area in 2008, Metropolitan Police Division 5 chief Somprasong Yenthuam said on Tuesday (Sept 27). This new piece of information has led authorities to assume the victim died quite some time ago, Maj Gen Somprasong said. On Monday (Sept 26), Chulalongkorn Hospital’s head of forensic medicine, Udomsak Hoonwijit, said results found that the body parts had been frozen for an extended period.

Photo: Munir Uz Zaman/AFP One of the three suspects, earlier identified as British national Peter Andrew Colter had told police the freezer was moved from his former house on Ekkamai Soi 12 to the shophouse on Sukhumvit Soi 56. Mr Colter said he had no idea what was inside the freezer. Police found several passports belonging to him with different names, making it difficult to determine exactly where he is from. Police believe he is the gang’s leader and has knowledge about the corpse, Gen Somprasong said.
However, the man has been tight-lipped, providing no information about the victim. His alleged accomplices – Aaron Thomas Gabel and Jame Douglas Eger – have been confirmed by the US embassy in Bangkok to be US nationals. Officers have questioned three individuals who moved the freezer from Mr Colter’s former house. However, due to the ongoing investigation, their accounts must remain confidential for the moment, according to police. Meanwhile, a team of fo-
rensic doctors on Tuesday conducted a new postmortem examination on the body and were expected to share results by Wednesday (Sept 28), city police chief Sanit Mahathavorn said. The foreign suspects are currently facing multiple charges, including concealing a corpse. Investigators are gathering evidence to press murder charges, Maj Gen Somprasong. A source said the victim’s throat was likely slashed before being beheaded. Bangkok Post

Authorities mull easing of tourist vehicle ban BANGKOK Administrators meet to discuss how to solve a problem of a misaligned road in Sri Racha district of Chonburi. Photo: Treenai Chansrichol
Misaligned road in Sri Racha raises eyebrows CHONBURI R ESIDENTS OF NOEN Pha Suk village in tambon Nong Kham of Si Racha district have been puzzled by the fact that what is supposed to be a road through their community has turned out to be two, and their ends do not meet properly. Construction of the two roads began three years ago, starting from opposite directions. They were supposed to meet somewhere in the middle, seamlessly creating one long road. But this was not the case. The problem stemmed from the fact that each of the roads was built by a different municipality – Laem Chabang and Chao Phraya Surasak. When the administrators of the two municipalities met on Monday (Sept 26) at the spot where the two roads were
supposed to meet, they agreed that the junction was under the jurisdiction of the latter. They also learned that the owners of two plots of land through which the roads were built had refused to transfer it to be public property, so the municipality was not able to make adjustments to make sure their ends meet properly. At the request of the municipality, the land owners had agreed to transfer the part of land on which the roads were built to be public property. Adjustments to the two roads to make their ends properly adjoined would be made after a land transfer paper has been signed by the two owners, said Supong Panchalermchai, the mayor of Chao Phraya Surasak Municipality. A question which remains unanswered is why the two roads were not built to meet in alignment in the first place. Bangkok Post
T
he Transport Ministry is considering easing measures curbing the influx of foreign-registered tourist vehicles entering the North of Thailand, particularly from China, following a plunge in Chinese tourist arrivals which has dented tourism revenue. Transport Ministry deputy permanent secretary Daroon Saengchai last week discussed the issue with Itthirit Kinglek, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, and tourism operators from Chiang Rai and Tak provinces. The discussion focused on the impact the Land Transport Department’s (LTD) strict regulations on foreign-registered vehicles travelling into the country, which came into effect on June 27, have had on tourism operators. The LTD imposed the rule after an influx of visiting motorists resulted in a spike in traffic accidents and waste management problems. The benefits from this group of tourists also were called into question since many of them did not stay in hotels. Tourism operators complained the number of Chinese-registered vehicles which entered the northern border
The plan was to restrict Chinese tourists from roaming all over northern Thailand in their private vehicles. The practice was that Chinese have virtually stopped coming at all through points like the Thailand-Laos Friendship Bridge at Chiang Rai’s Chiang Khong district, seen here. Photo: Cheewin Sattha provinces dwindled considerably after the regulation came into effect. Each year, more than 80,000 Chinese tourists drive their vehicles to the North of Thailand. On average, they spent about B30,000 per person a trip, according to tourism operators. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Daroon said tourism operators complained the regulations have put off Chinese tourists from driving their vehicles to northern Thailand, which in turn has adversely affected local tourism operators. Mr Daroon said that 70 per cent of Chinese tourists travel in caravans arranged by Thai tourism operators while the rest come in private vehicles. The caravans, each com-
prising 5-10 vehicles, were unfamiliar with the surroundings but managed to stay their course and avoid accidents, as they were looked after by guides provided by tour operators, Mr Daroon said. The department will consider relaxing the regulations for vehicles which are specified in the LTD announcement, he said. He also said other types of vehicles that are not specified in the announcement may also be allowed to enter the country though they must make requests 30 days in advance. However, Mr Daroon said the easing of the regulation will not apply to tourists driving private vehicles. There has been a surge in Chinese motorists visiting the
northern provinces following the opening in 2008 of the socalled Road 3 Asia, known as route R3A, linking southern China, Laos and Chiang Khong district in the northern province of Chiang Rai. Apart from Chinese tourists, other foreign-registered motorists including those from Malaysia, Laos, Singapore and Myanmar have also been affected by the measure. Only vehicles with a total of nine seats and pickup trucks with a maximum weight of 3.5 tons are currently allowed to travel into Thailand. Motorists also need to seek permission and let authorities check their vehicles as they enter. Bangkok Post
Court dismisses lawsuit, rules revocation of Thaksin’s passports legal BANGKOK THE CENTRAL ADMINistrative Court on Tuesday (Sept 27) dismissed a lawsuit filed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra against the state’s revocation of his two regular Thai passports. In rejecting the suit, the
court said the Department of Consular Affairs had the authority to issue or not issue passports, including revoking the passports of Thai nationals. The department’s revocation of Thaksin’s passports was in line with the law, said the court. In the suit filed on his behalf, the fugitive former
prime minister accused the chief of the Department of Consular Affairs and the permanent secretary for foreign affairs of illegally revoking the passports on May 26 last year. The ministry cancelled Thaksin’s passports following media interviews he gave in South Korea. The interviews
were deemed “inappropriate” by security authorities who claimed Thaksin’s comments undermined national security and dignity. Thaksin’s lawyer, Watthana Tiangkoon, who submitted the suit on Thaksin’s behalf, said that he would notify Thaksin about the verdict. Bangkok Post

Nascent middle class at play
Pyongyang’s elite not the only ones with a taste for consumer goods NORTH KOREA
N
orth Korea’s use of its showcase capital city to promote an image of national success and prosperity has cemented Pyongyang’s reputation as a Potemkin Village boasting leisure facilities that amount to little more than “playgrounds for cadres.” Pyongyang has always been an exclusive city, and the 10 per cent of the 25 million population allowed to live there generally enjoy a lifestyle the vast majority of North Koreans can only dream of. But there are increasing signs that the capital’s political elite are not the only ones able to indulge a taste for consumer goods and a spot of rest and recreation. A closely monitored but tolerated grassroots capitalism, born out of a spirit of survivalist self-sufficiency that got many through the catastrophic failure of the state distribution system in the famine years of the midto-late 1990s, has given rise to a growing entrepreneurial

Photo: Ed Jones/AFP class with disposable income and free time. It emerged during the leadership of Kim Jong-Il, but has only begun to prosper under his son Kim Jong-Un who took power after his father died in 2011. Its rise can be seen in Pyongyang in the number of mobile phone users, the growing fleets of taxis that ply the capital’s wide avenues and the splashes of street fashion among young women.
If the sort of genuine wealth that creates car owners is still limited to a tiny minority, it seems there is larger, aspirant middle class gaining a foothold in the capital and presumably other cities. Some observers such as veteran North Korea watcher Andrei Lankov believe Kim Jong-Un wants to promote a style of “authoritarian capitalism” that allows room for private enterprise while maintaining absolute political control
over its development. The rewards for those who benefit from such a system include the ability to afford a meal at one of Pyongyang’s new restaurants or a family outing to watch a dolphin show. Since taking over from his father, Mr Kim has pushed through a number of costly “leisure” projects ranging from theme parks to a ski resort. This in a country where, according to the United Nations, 70% of the population
remains “food insecure” and cash-starved infrastructure leaves millions vulnerable to floods and drought. For the North Korean leadership, the projects serve the dual purpose of projecting prosperity, while also catering to the elite and satisfying the aspirations of those with new-found disposable income. And it clearly hopes the really high-end facilities, like the Masik Ski resort, will help bring in much-needed hard currency from increased tourism. A lower-end example is a Folk Park built just outside Pyongyang and opened three years ago. With its full-size replica of a 5th century pagoda and scaled down representations of Pyongyang’s landmark monuments, it is similar to the sort of theme parks that proliferated in and around Chinese cities in the 1990s. The entrance fee is low and the complex claims an average daily turnover of 5,000 visitors. “Our respected Marshal Kim Jong-Un said we must make this park a great education site for the nation, and to
raise people’s spirits,” intoned the official tour guide. More up-market is the dolphinarium completed in Pyongyang in 2012 and fed by a specially constructed seawater pipeline from the port of Nampo. While the Folk Park partly aims to educate, the dolphin show is wholly aimed at entertainment But it is an entirely political project, originally devised by Kim Jong-Il and eventually realised by his son, with trainers selected from top universities and sent to China to learn how to handle the dolphins. And the obviously high construction and running expenses again raise the issue of skewed priorities in a country where poverty runs so high. The head of customer service at the dolphinarium, Jon Suk-Yong declines to reveal its daily operational cost. “But the seawater is brought in through a 70-kilometre pipeline and we have 10 dolphins that each eat 10 kilos of fish every day, so you can imagine,” Jon said. The ‘batty boy’ and his ongoing challenge against homophobia JAMAICA
H
e’s brilliant and charismatic and should be one of Jamaica’s heroes up there on the pedestal with Usain Bolt and the reggae and dancehall stars who stand in the long shadow of Bob Marley. But Jamaica has trouble embracing the novelist Marlon James, even after he won one of the world’s top literary prizes, the Man Booker, last year, the first Caribbean writer to do so since V S Naipaul 45 years ago. The reason is simple. “I’m a batty boy,” James said using the derogatory island slang for gay. In Jamaica homosexual acts are punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Ragga stars like Buju Banton have called for the murder of gay men, and a string of horrific killings a few years ago prompted rights groups to brand it the “most homophobic place on earth”. Yet James argues that “Jamaica has come a long way” since. And he hopes the international success of
Jamaica has trouble embracing novelist Marlon James, even after he won one of the world’s top literary prizes, the Man Booker, last year. Photo: Dominique Faget/AFP his book, “A Brief History of Seven Killings” – which turns on an attempted assassination of Marley in 1976 – will help. “It is still a very homophobic country, though it has evolved for the better in a lot of ways,” he said. “Which doesn’t mean I feel totally safe.” When the US-based writer returned in glory earlier this
year to give the Bob Marley lecture at his old alma mater, the University of the West Indies, “people were really supportive but there was still a Facebook page saying, ‘Should a homosexual be talking about Bob Marley?’” “You can imagine what the comments on it were like... The trouble is I know who put
up the page. It is somebody who works in the arts, yet she’s still a flipping homophobe, and has no problem inciting hatred. “She said at one point, ‘I read the book and I thought it was good, but should this batty boy...’” What cheered him however was being invited to talk to
the university’s gay student association. “I was so stunned we had one. Even if there was one I would never have gone,” said 45-year-old James. Ten years ago riot police had to fire on a mob who chased a gay student through the campus, and in 2012 security guards at the island’s University of Technology beat up a man who had sought refuge from a similarly homophobic crowd. Violence is never far away in James’ “A Brief History of Seven Killings”. Critics have called the book a virtuoso evocation of the dark days of the late 1970s, when rival political factions fought on the streets of Kingston, with the CIA arming gangsters to unseat the socialist Michael Manley – who Marley supported. “Jamaica became another Cold War battleground,” James said, “and as elsewhere the US ended with some very strange bedfellows.” But rather than stop his story at the failed attempt to kill Marley, who was shot in the arm and carried the bullet
to his grave, James – who also wears his hair in dreadlocks – became fascinated with what happened to the gunmen afterwards. “These men for the most part vanished. There are rumours about what happened to them – who was shot, whose throat was slit, who was hung... Jamaicans made an effort to destroy them and make sure they never existed. Of course that fired my imagination,” James said. “I had no idea that two people involved in the Marley assassination became instrumental in bringing crack to America. So I followed the gun and murder and drug trail, and the CIA and the Cold War” right to 1991. “The whole writing of this book was crazy. The very first paragraph that I wrote is now on page 458. I wanted to write something quick, brief and brutal,” he added. But the book ended up at nearly 700 pages. “It is some crazy shit,” James laughed, “that breaks every rule, so don’t ask me why it works. But it does.” AFP
Besieged Syrian kids play with swings made of rockets SYRIA SYRIAN CHILDREN LOVE playgrounds like kids all over the world but in rebel-held towns near Damascus swing sets are made of spent rockets and jungle gyms are tucked underground. Eastern Ghouta, a besieged opposition stronghold east of Damascus, has been battered by regime air strikes and shelling since Syria’s conflict erupted more than five years ago.
Since then, children have grown accustomed to warnings not to play outside – but the grown-ups are finding creative ways to make sure kids can still have fun. In Douma, Eastern Ghouta’s largest town, children sprint towards red-and-black swings made of rockets which government MiG fighters jets once rained on their hometown. The sets were made by Abu Ali al-Bitar, a 40-yearold house painter who collected dozens of rocket debris,
welded them into swings and then gave them a fresh coat of paint. “At first, my neighbours thought I was crazy. They didn’t realise I was going to make children’s toys out of this,” he said while sitting next to one of his creations. “It was a huge surprise for everyone when I came outside my shop one day carrying a swing.” Fellow townspeople urged him to build more sets, and farmers brought him rocket and shell debris that had
crashed on their lands on the outskirts of Douma. “This is how we made the impossible, possible – that something used to kill can be turned into a toy that makes children happy,” said Abu Ali. A dozen children clamber onto swing sets nearby, taking advantage of clear skies after a fragile truce brought a lull in air strikes and shelling on the town. Ten-year-old Hanin – who lost her right hand in a rocket attack on a local market – giggles as she swoops through the air in one of the swings. And Ghadir, nine, says he’s grateful to Abu Ali for making new toys for Douma’s children. “Bashar al-Assad sent rockets to kill us but Uncle Abu Ali didn’t want us to be sad, so he turned them into toys to make us happy,” Ghadir says. More than 300,000 people have been killed in Syria’s war, which has ravaged the country’s education system. The United Nations estimates that at least 2.1 million Syrian children and teenagers do not have access to education.

Photo: AFP In Arbin, another rebel town in Eastern Ghouta, kids ran down concrete steps into a dimly-lit, rocky tunnel that lead to their unconventional playground. It is a vibrant and safe area, with its own merry-goround, a mini ferris wheel that almost grazes the ceiling and booming music. Hassan, who works with a local civil society group, says volunteers rent these underground playgrounds to keep the children entertained, including during the recent Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha. “We decided to rent out spaces u nderg rou nd , i n
basements. They have playgrounds, rec rooms, and even a theatre,” he said. “We planned a lot of activities for the kids and gave out gifts to make them as happy as possible during Eid.” Children pull themselves up on a net of ropes and zip down brightly-coloured slides, while mothers wave from a mezzanine overlooking the cheerful scene. “We had a party in the basement so that no one has to be afraid of being in the street,” 10-year-old Yumna says timidly. “Here, the world is safe.” AFP thephuketnews

The unfolding post-Brexit scenario was an anchor of Amb Davidson’s presentation at the British Chamber of Commerce of Thailand (BCCT) Business Dinner held at the Amari Patong on Sept 22. “I think the situation is still a little unclear as to what the final parameters of the negotiations will be, but my expectation – and this is my thoughts only – is that by early next year we will have a reasonable sense of what the Cabinet feels are the parameters for negotiations that will take us forward,” Amb Davidson said. Mr Davidson noted that wide speculation in the press about Britain’s position postBrexit ran the full spectrum from full self-regulation to a disguised re-entry into the EU market, but noted that UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson had made very clear

British Ambassador to Thailand Brian Davidson has a very positive vision for British business in Thailand. what Amb Davidson’s role in Thailand is. “Boris Johnson, who was one of the key supporters of the Leave campaign, has a very strong vision of where Britain should be in the world, and I think it is very helpful that he has been very clear,” Amb Davidson said. “The UK is not looking back in on itself, we are looking more outward. The instructions I have for the mission (UK Embassy) is to look at the opportunities, particularly in Thailand and Southeast Asia, for the UK to expand its presence, to solidify some of the relationships we have, and to see what additional advantage we can gain before Brexit finally becomes a reality,” he explained.

To this, Amb Davidson pointed to the formation of the Thai-UK Business Leadership Council as crucial step in developing UK-Thailand trade relations. “We have been talking to very senior business people in Thailand, and there is very strong support from the Thai side,” he said, praising the achievements of both Prime Minister’s Special Envoy Virasakdi Futrakul and UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Thailand Mark Garnier. “This is a very strong development in providing British businesses the best opportunity to enter the market here in Thailand,” he said. “We are close to making recommendations, but we need to make sure that what we
present to the Thai government is what British business needs to support the development of industries in Thailand – and we need to represent the interests of SMEs (small- to medium-sized enterprises),” he said. “Not only should we look at what Thailand is doing for its own development, but also how it’s exploiting the developments within Southeast Asia and growth within the Asean community. “We should see how the UK can support Thailand to take advantage of the developments within Asean and how the country is working towards moving up the value chain and use the support we can give bringing in British expertise through businesses,” he said.
MARRIOTT INTERNAtional officially completed its US$12.2 billion (B421.8bn) purchase of Starwood Hotels and Resorts last Friday (Sept 23) to make Marriott the largest hotel company in the world. Almost a year after first announcing the merger agreement, the addition of Starwood’s portfolio expands the Marriott to now comprise 30 brands with more than 5,700 hotels, amounting to 1.1 million rooms in more than 110 countries. In a move much faster than anticipated, the new Marriott has already made its first major decision: to give reciprocal benefits to members of the Marriott Rewards programme and the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) loyalty programme. Marriott announced that members will have their status matched across both
programmes, giving them access to brands and destinations that were previously unavailable. For example, SPG members will now be able to reap benefits at luxury brands such as the Ritz-Carlton and Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, while Marriott Rewards members can now accrue points for stays at the Sheraton, Aloft, St. Regis and W Hotels. Likewise, Marriott Rewards members now have access to new destinations like the Maldives, Santorini, Greece and Bora Bora, while SPG members have access to Aruba, Serchio Valley in Tuscany and Kruger National Park in South Africa. Guests who book directly through the Marriott mobile or SPG app will also receive free in-room Wi-Fi. MQDC scoops top honours Magnolia Quality lifts eight prizes at Thailand Property Awards SPONSORED
M
QDC Mag nol ia Quality Development Corporation collected a total of eight awards to waltz away with the year’s highest honour for Best Developer at the 11th annual Thailand Property Awards 2016, an international event presented by Hansgrohe and organised by PropertyGuru, Asia’s leading online property group. The awards are the Kingdom’s biggest and longestrunning annual real estate event, attended by more than 600 guests and leading figures including VIP guest and speaker former Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop. Top wi n ner MQDC’s mega-developments along the Chao Phraya River won several gongs, including Best Ultra Luxury Condo Development (Bangkok) for The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, and Best Luxury Condo Development (Bangkok) for Magnolias Waterfront Residences at ICONSIAM.
A total of 33 award categories were presented at the black-tie gala in Bangkok to honour the ‘best of the best’ in Thailand’s wide-ranging property industry. The former also received the Best Condo Development (Thailand) award. According to the judging panel presided by Dr Manop Bongsadadt, renowned professor of architecture at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University, MQDC’s riverfront ventures “will forever change waterfront living in the capital.” A few more accolades went to other Chao Phraya Riverbased projects, proving once again that the super prime location is among the top draws for Bangkok’s luxury
real estate segment. Menam Residences received the Best High-Rise High End Condo Development (Bangkok) trophy, while Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel by multiple nominee Minor Hotels made a clean sweep with four gongs, including three awards for design and one for Best Hotel Development – a category which had no other contenders. Elsewhere, PACE Development’s MahaSamutr, which features the largest man-made crystalline lagoon in Thailand, took home three awards for Best Residential Architec-
tural Design, Best Luxury Villa Development (Hua Hin) and Best Villa Development (Thailand). “MahaSamutr has brought a level of luxury living to Hua Hin unlike the city has ever seen before,” the judges noted. Suphin Mechuchep, managing director at Jones Lang LaSalle (Thailand) and chairperson of the judging panel, said that the 2016 Winners – whether land-based or located near a body of water – received the judges’ approval because they understood what the market expects from quality
real estate. “These award-winning developments help raise the bar and set an example of standards for future developments to follow,” Ms Suphin said. The second decade of the Thailand Property Awards introduced eight new categories, reflecting the resilience and continued growth of the Thai real estate market. Among the new awards was a Special Recognition in Sustainable Development, which was presented to Best Developer winner MQDC. “The company’s ‘Sustainnovation’ campaign clearly has made sustainability both a cornerstone and a unique selling point not only in the development and design of their projects but in changing customers’ attitudes, behaviours and practices to ensure a project remains sustainable for many generations to come,” said the judges. MQDC also earned the Best Green Development accolade for the Whizdom Avenue Ratchada – Ladprao high-end project, a two-time winner this year.
Official supervisor BDO, one of the world’s largest accountancy and auditing firms, supervised the Thailand Property Awards 2016’s entire nomination and judging process to ensure fairness, transparency and credibility. The BDO team was led by co-managing partner Paul Ashburn. A total of 33 award categories were presented at the black-tie gala last Thursday (Sept 22_ at Plaza Athenee Bangkok – a Royal Meridien hotel – to the Kingdom’s best developers and developments, plus one special award for the Real Estate Personality of the Year, Dr Suriya Poolvoralaks, managing director of Best Ultra Luxury Condo Development (Bangkok) finalist Major Development, who was chosen by the editors of Property Report for leading one of the country’s top names in the luxury segment. T
he preliminary rituals for the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, also known as the “Nine Emperor Gods Festival”, begin today (Sept 30) – the last day of the eighth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. In preparation for the festival, which starts tomorrow and runs for nine days (Oct 1-9), all 24 participating Chinese shrines will be consecrated, particularly the shrine’s kitchens which prepare vegetarian food for devotees throughout the festival. During this time, demons, or orphaned souls, who have been won-over by a Taoist Master and are therefore able to take the first step on the ladder of merit leading to heaven, are symbolically released and are said to protect the community for the duration of the festival. Following this, a lantern-pole raising ritual will take place at each shrine. The lantern poles feature nine oil lanterns, symbolizing the Nine Emperor Gods, who are said to descend down the poles into the shrines at midnight, marking the start of the festival on Oct 1. The Vegetarian Festival is based on Chinese Taoist beliefs, but also incorporates Buddhist elements, and participants are generally from Phuket’s ThaiChinese community which makes up around 30 per cent of the population. During the festival participants dress in white to symbolize purity and adhere to a strict vegan diet to cleanse their bodies. Other rules for the festival include maintaining virtuous behaviour, imbibing no alcohol or drugs and people who are in a state of mourning, pregnant or menstruating are prohibited from taking part in the festival. Perhaps the most striking feature of the festival is the numerous street processions conducted daily by the different shrines. These processions

The Ma Song – those who will allow spirits to possess them, mortal mediums – are famous for their gruesome displays of flagellating their flesh with axes or maces and inserting a variety of artefacts, such as knives, skewers and even guns through cuts in their cheeks or hanging them by hooks from the chests or backs. Ma Song claim to feel no pain during these acts and say that the gods that inhabit their bodies protect them from harm. Other spectacular displays by devotees of the Nine Emperor Gods include fire-walking, bladed-ladder climbing,

The last ceremony of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Oct 9) is certainly the most impressive. Between 9pm and midnight, all shrines join a street procession from Phuket Town to the sea at Saphan Hin to farewell the Nine Emperor Gods as they re-ascend to heaven. So if this is your first time in Phuket during the festival, make sure you take the opportunity to witness this ancient tradition which is a unique and spectacular example of Phuket’s rich culture and history. Smooth sailing at Boathouse Mark Knowles editor1@classactmedia.co.th
W
hen I was invited to dine at Kata’s famous Boathouse Wine & Grill I knew I was in for a treat – it has been the standard bearer for quality beach-side dining in the area for a long time. As we entered, my dining companion and I took some time to admire the wonderful exhibition by local artist Pat Kaewdome. His intricate and kaleidoscopic paintings are well worth stopping by to look at, even if your aren’t dining. After our brief artistic detour, we were quickly seated facing the gently breaking waves on Kata Beach. The light ocean breeze drifting in through the open French-doors was pleasantly cooling, negating any need for air-conditioning. Soon after, our friendly sommelier and host for the evening, with the memorable name of “S”, introduced himself and guided us briefly through the menu. Meanwhile, fresh bread rolls (the soft, chewy and salty pretzel-style bread

was superb) and an appetiser of velvety mushroom soup was served. The menu lives up to the restaurant’s name with its focus on charcoal-grilled meat and seafood dishes, complemented with fresh vegetables and matched with selected wines. Their range of signature Thai dishes features some perennial favourites, greatly enhanced by the use of fresh herbs and spices and locallysourced seafood. Despite the breadth of the menu it was an easy decision for me, I was eager to try the latest addition to their line-up – the dry-aged beef. Dry-aged beef is the latest buzz in high-end steakhouses from New York to Tokyo and I was interested to find out if it lived up to the hype. First, let me explain what it is – dry-ageing beef is a process where large sections of the beef carcass, what are called the primal cuts, are hung in a very cold temperature-controlled space for several weeks or more. The Boathouse hangs their primequality beef for 60 days and during that time natural enzymes start to break down the connective tissue, making the meat even more tender. This natural process evaporates some of the water in the meat, further concentrating the flavour of the juice. Amino acids are also generated during this period, the most important one being glutamate – which provides the much sought after umami flavour which gives foods such as mushrooms, tomatoes, and even fish sauce, their rich and complex savoury taste. So after ordering Tom Yum Goong and Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce for appetisers, I settled on the dryaged 300g Sirloin Steak with Truffle Sauce and a side of Cauliflower au Gratin. My companion, not being a fan of beef, decided on the Goong Pad Nam Makam or Wok-Fried Tiger Prawns in Tamarind Sauce. Ever helpful, “S” suggested we try one of their light Italian white wines to accompany our appetisers to help
The 60-day dry-aged beef is juicy and packed with flavour. mellow the spicy flavours of the Tom Yum and compliment the juicy chicken breast skewers and mild satay sauce. It was a perfect match, this wasn’t surprising, considering we soon learned that “S” had only days ago won first prize in the sommelier competition of the Andaman Hotelier and Tourism Fair 2016. That’s quite a feat when you consider how many five- and six-star hotels there are in the region. So as we finished of our appetisers, I asked “S” what wine he would recommend for my first ever dry-aged steak experience. Again, he kept us in Italy and took us to Tuscany to find a full-bodied red worthy of paring with such quality steak. I confess here that this selection wasn’t on the wine list, but “S” decided to treat us and thought it would be perfect for the sirloin. With his extensive knowledge and the boathouse’s incredible cellar, I’m sure even the most discerning wine drinker will find satisfaction. Finally the dish I had been waiting for – the dry-aged steak – had arrived! After selecting one of the Lacrox deluxe steak knives presented to me by “S”, I eagerly sliced a piece of the perfectly
medium-rare steak and popped it in my mouth. Bliss. The smoky char-grilled meat was supremely tender and juicy with the perfect ratio of fat to meat. In fact, I ate almost half of it before I remembered to try the truffle sauce. This red wine jus, infused with a hint of truffle, provided another burst of umami flavour which combined luxuriously with the beef and was perfectly matched with the fleshy Tuscan red. I was so enamoured of my steak that I almost forgot to ask my companion for a taste of her Tiger Prawns. I was surprised by the depth of the tamarind flavour, often this dish suffers from over-sweetening, but here the dark, fruity tamarind was right there to taste and balanced well with the delicate flesh of the prawns. After mains we decided we could squeeze in a dessert if we shared, so we settled on the Lemon Cheesecake with Berry Compote. This proved to be the perfect end to our meal, we nibbled at it while slowly finishing our bottle of wine, and as we sat there listening to the waves break, I understood perfectly why Boathouse is still sets the bar for fine dining in Southern Phuket.

lose to three hundred more runners than the targeted 2,600 took to the streets of Nai Thon-Layan on Sept 18 to endure what has become known as “Heartbreak Hill”, a charity run organised by Accor Hotels of Southern Thailand. Funds raised from the event, which offered runners the choice of two distances – 5 kilometre and 10.5km – are donated to Accor’s Yim Kids Project and also to Phuket Province to assist in supporting the island’s unprivileged school children and improving their educational options. A total of 2,873 runners turned out for the Heartbreak Hill charity run, which was opened by Vice Governor Chockdee Amornwat and attended by TAT Assistant Director, Utit Limsakul; Director of Tourism and Sports Phuket office, Siwaree Walor; Head of Phuket Public Relations Department, Bussaya Chaipeum, and General Managers from 17 Accor Hotels across Southern Thailand, and all together a total of over B400,000 was raised during the event for the above mentioned causes. A huge B75,000 of the B400,000 raised was donated by guests of the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach, the Schmid family, who stayed at the resort in August and presented their donation to General Manager Brett Wilson upon their departure as they were unable to take part in the race itself. The run, which takes in the many steep hills around Nai Thon and Layan and tests runner’s abilities right from the very start until the end, was won by Thai nationals. The run also saw participation from German singer, actor and voice actor, Felix Von Jascheroff, who is auctioning the vest he wore during

Belladonna after weeks of treatment.
Soi Dog hospital is up and running
I
am delighted to tell you that, after three years in the planning and construction stages, Thailand’s only hospital dedicated to street dogs is finally open. The hospital is the first of its kind in Thailand, with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. It will mean so many more dogs can be rescued and given the medical treatment they desperately need. Animals in need of x-rays or hydrotherapy no longer need to be transported on long journeys to specialist clinics – each of them can now get the treatment they need right here at our shelter. Belladonna is a very special girl, and now barely recognisable as the sad pup who arrived at our shelter recently. Belladonna’s transformation is sure to warm your heart, as it did mine. There is no denying that she could never have been helped without kind donations by people like you. With the treatment we were able to provide, her whole life has changed, and I am so pleased to be able to share her story with you. Battling horrendous skin problems, she also had several badly infected wounds on her body and was very anaemic. Fortunately we were able to start medical treatment immediately and get her on the road to recovery. @thephuketnews
After many weeks of treatment, Belladonna made a remarkable recovery and was ready to be adopted by a caring new owner. Furthermore, I am so pleased to tell you that she has just been adopted and will leave soon for her new home in the US. Of course, she is just one of many cases that have arrived at our shelter in recent weeks. I hope her photos show you the incredible difference a small monthly gift makes for so many like her Soi Dog Foundation is now in the process of creating a new outreach department, to launch in early 2017. The team will provide instructions in simple veterinary care to the temples and animal carers within the Phuket community. The aim is to teach basic care and preventative medicine, while educating monks, owners, and animal carers on animal management. The objective is to reduce the number of animals housed in the shelter for minor conditions when the space is needed for serious cases, while also increasing the service provided by Soi Dog to animals on the island of Phuket. For more information and donations visit: www.soidog.org John Dalley
More than 2800 people took part in the annual charity run in Layan and Nai Thon. the run via Ebay and will be donating the proceeds to Accor’s chosen charities. Artit was the last runner to cross
the finish line in a time of 3 hours 30 minutes, but he did so with the aid of a prosthetic leg. As he made his way over the finish line all participants who remained at the finish were on hand to cheer him on, and his girlfriend was on hand to present him with his finisher’s medal.

Barefoot luxury in the Maldives Andrew J. Wood editor1@classactmedia.co.th
M
y first visit to the Maldives was in the ’90s and since then I have returned every year since 2013. A total of five visits. The Maldives is a special place for me. It has a completely unique environment and I thoroughly relax and I enjoy chilling out in the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery. With a rich culture, gorgeous vistas and spectacular marine life, it’s one of our favourite destinations. We quickly adopt a “life is good” attitude of total relaxation and enjoying being away from our usual routines – it’s what draws me back year after year. I can truly say that the Maldives is a brilliant holiday destination, one of the best. With 1,190 islands, land is still the scarcest resource in the Maldives Archipelago, making up less than 1 per cent of its surface area and it is one of the lowest lying countries in the world. My choice of hotel for the last four years has been the Centara Grand. Being a former hotelier I know there’s nothing like the personal touch. When you are staying in a hotel as a recognised regular guest, it’s extra special. You get a sense of belonging; a sense of family. A special kind of relationship between you and the management and the whole team. It is something quite unique and this is absolutely the case with the Centara Grand. Travelling to the Maldives could not be easier. Travelling from Bangkok with my partner Pichai, we boarded a direct flight to the International Airport in Malé, the capital and most populous city in the Republic of Maldives. It takes just four hours and 15 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport
The De Havilland Sea Otter is one stylish aircraft.
with Bangkok Airways. From Malé it’s just a short 25-minute hop by seaplane to the resort. You don’t need that much luggage in the Maldives, so pack lightly. Staying at a beach resort, you spend much of your time in shorts and T-shirt and quite often for me, as the title suggests, barefoot. Just perfect. I just love seaplanes. Arriving at the resort aboard a twin-engined De Havilland Sea Otter is very special, an experience not to be missed. It’s a great way to arrive, stylish and fun. There is no strict dress code for the restaurants, except swim wear is not allowed and in the evenings you have to cover up a little more than lunchtime. Not a problem as most guests wear something loose fitting anyway due to the temperature. Cotton seems to work best. Bring lots of reading material (there is a library if you forget or run out) and your headphones (if you like to listen and relax to music, as I do). The resort has many daily activities with boat trips to nearby islands; fishing trips and sunset cruises with dolphin watching. Over the years it has been interesting to watch the development of the resort. The Centara is no stranger to change. Improvements evolve gradually, but without ever losing the designer’s original concept for the resort. It has improved organically and with care. The inclusion of 20 Sunset Ocean Pool Villas has been so successful they are often sold out. They incorporate a small horizon-less plunge pool in the balcony of the villa and it’s a perfect place to soak and relax, especially at sunset with the fabulous colours above the turquoise sea. The low-lying landscape provides some of the most brilliant sunsets you will ever see. Taking in this view with a cocktail in your hand is just magical!
Go shark and stingray feeding at the dock.
Individual infinity plunge pools are a nice touch. Dining at the Centara is a delight. The resort is family friendly so there is a wide choice of dining options. We particularly enjoyed eating at the Island Club. A fine dining restaurant with a great kitchen, it’s special and relaxed. The menu changes daily for lunch and dinner and the service is faultless. Being a Thai-owned resort, it comes as no surprise that the resort caters for lovers of Thai cuisine. Arguably the fastest growing global culinary trend, Thai cuisine is a huge phenomenon and the resort’s Suan Bua (lotus pond) is a wonderful Thai restaurant with an exceptional Chef – Khun Ning. We ate regularly here during our two-week vacation. Alternating between Azzura Italian Restaurant and Reef, the international buffet restaurant with its popular teppanyaki counter. The resort is all-inclusive, which at first, four-years ago, worried me. But I needn’t have worried, the food is fabulous. You can completely forget about taking your wallet anywhere in the resort. You never need to figure out your spending – it’s all included – which makes going to bars and restaurants trouble-free and most importantly, stress-free. The island is packed with water sports: snorkelling, paragliding, banana boats, mini water slides, a supervised kids club and a scuba club. On top of this are daily activities such as spa treatments, kids’ fish feeding, shark/stingray feeding and a recently introduced yoga programme with the extraordinary Dr Raj. You can learn to scuba dive at the resort, starting with an intro course that is included in the resort package. Also free are fishing and sunset cruises with dolphin watching. There are also regular diving trips, for the more expe-

The endless horizons make for spectacular sunsets. rienced diver, which do cost extra. For me the top activity is swimming with whale sharks. They are called sharks but they are actually the world’s largest fish and are plankton eaters. The trip consists of a 45-minute boat ride to the area where the whale sharks might be feeding and once spotted, snorkelling for 30 to 45 minutes in the general area. Growing up to nine-metres long, these majestic creatures gently swim along, giant mouths open, as we watch in awe at their immense power and beauty. This is probably on my list of top 10 things to do in the world, such a unique and extraordinary experience. What else to do? Well for me quite often, nothing. (How often can you do that?) You are in charge of your own time, you’re on holiday, so relax. Lay back and soak up the good karma, which is so easy to do as there is so little to cause you stress. Andrew J. T
his month I want to talk to you about something that is just as important as healthy eating and exercise when it comes to making a positive change in your life. I am talking about admirable friends. I am pretty sure you have all heard the phrase “you are what you eat”. Well, we are also the people who choose who we want to spend our time with. When I was beginning my yoga and Buddhist studies, I remember reading an extract that was a big light bulb moment in my life: “With regard to external factors, I don’t envision any other single factor like friendship with admirable people as doing so much for a monk in training, who has not attained the heart’s goal, but remains intent on the unsurpassed safety from bondage. A monk who is a friend with admirable people abandons what is unskilful and develops what is skilful.” (Pali Canon Iti 17) The Pali name for your spiritual or admirable friends is kalyanamittata. These are people who are like-minded, inspirational friends that walk with you, successfully, towards your goals. You may have all the best intentions to change, however, if you are surrounded by anchors that keep weighing you down and pulling you in the wrong direction, you will end up going nowhere, fast. Like-minded people have the same goals, the same mind-set and will walk your journey with you. They will motivate you and you in turn will motivate them. I am not saying abandon all family and friends that are not on the same wavelength as you, that would be extreme. I am saying, spend the bulk of your time with people that keep you on the lighter
Zika: The facts explained
D
espite a rapid increase in the number of Zika-infected patients reported in Thailand, the public have been left in the dark about the virus. Should we live in fear or stay calm now that the virus has reached our shores? The Zika virus has been in Thailand since 1960, why hasn’t it received much attention? “Zika symptoms are usually mild and include a low fever at around 38°C, red eyes, muscle and joint pain and non-itchy rashes,” explained a specialist. “These symptoms can go away within seven days. And the death rate is extremely low, especially when compared to dengue haemorrhagic fever. This is also why the disease is underreported and under-investigated.”
Is there other ways of transmission besides Aedes aegypti mosquitoes? The Zika virus can survive in blood, semen, breast milk and the vagina. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Zika can be passed through sex from a person who carries the virus to his or her sex partners. Zika-infected patients are advised to have protected sex or avoid having sex in the period of six months after contracting the disease. Patients should not donate blood for a month after being infected. Who should be careful of contracting the virus besides pregnant women? There is scientific consensus that the @thephuketnews
The Aedes Aegypti mosquito is known to carry the Zika virus. Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly – a condition where a baby is born with a small head. This definitely affects the baby’s brain development, including intellectual quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ). Not all pregnant women who are infected with the virus will give birth to babies with microcephaly. Women who are pregnant, particularly within the first and second trimester, should take extra precaution,” said Dr Samornrod. Is a vaccine against Zika available? The vaccine against Zika, according to Dr Samornrod, is in its first phase of development, which means it would take several years for it to become available for use in humans. What is best for prevention? Avoiding mosquito bites is the best way to avoid getting infected. Households should also get rid of mosquito larvae and stagnant water where mosquitoes are likely to lay eggs. Lemongrass mosquito repellent can drive mosquitoes away. Also be aware that mosquitoes that carry Zika are daytime mosquitoes. Bangkok Post

This can also help you to inspire those around you that might want to change but need help getting started – pay it forward. Another great aspect of admirable friends, is that they keep you grounded. PCC take command Patong seal fourth win, Island get first
Hit the surf after a rainshower for best reults.
After the rain, that’s the best time to surf SURFING
Tim Campbell info@skylaphuket.com
HEY OCEAN LOVERS! To the happiness of all new practicing surfers the swell dropped a little this week, and Phuket has also seen steady rainfall of late. But don’t let yourselves be put off by the rain, as your going to get wet anyway, and the best time to surf is often just after the rain stops. G e n e r a l ly t he r a i n comes in squalls, so you can wax your board up and do your warm up stretches while you watch the spec-
tacular rain clouds sweep across the ocean, then as it stops, the ocean cleans up, and without a lot of wind produces a clean spell. Only for a short amount of time, but enough to score some nice cleaner waves and without the crowds. A little safety shout out. Whenever you are in the water, never hold the little rope that connects your leash to the board. A surfer the other day was doing this and as a wave came it spun the board around and the rope cut the top of his finger clean off. You can pull on your leash to bring the board close, but always take hold of the board not the end of the leash. See you in the water!
CRICKET
T
here was more action in the Outrigger T20 last Sunday (Sept 25). In this fourth round, the early game saw Thalang Cricket Team (TCT) take on Patong Cricket Club (PCC). PCC won the toss and elected to bat first, with S Hamilton and A Runhaar opening. Opening the bowling for TCT were M Rehman and M Odenaal. In the sixth over Dave Watson’s very first ball troubled Runhaar with a close LBW, followed by a mix-up which led him to him be run out. Then P Ledeboer faced some tight bowling from R Jayasuriya . Hamilton was dismissed for 20 in the next over by Watson. H Jordaan started to score quick, until Watson bowled not only Ledeboer, but also S Gaur. This left A Simmons to face a hat trick ball. Unfortunately for Watson it wasn’t to be, and at drinks PCC were 72-4. After drinks there were 15 runs from the next three overs, but alas, no wickets fell.
I Bekker hooks one away. Photo: Michael Way In the 14th and 15th overs C Murphy and Pao both picked up wickets straight away – Simmons and N Quail. H McD o n a ld joi n e d Jordaan and they scored a partnership of 37, with McDonald on 20 when LBWd. P Jha and Murphy cleaned up the tail end. PCC’s final score, 151-9. C Baxter and Jha came out to open for TCT, whilst S Bhattacharya and McDonald took the ball. Bhattacharya struck first, claiming Jha for 10. But TCT gained control as Watson scored freely until caught off Raju. Ruhnaar then claimed the wicket of Jayasuriya. TCT were 75-3 at drinks. After the break, Baxter
was bowled by Ruhnaar. This brought out Rehman who bowled for just 5. I Bekker and Pao could only manage 1 as Simmons got his 1st wicket and Jordaan his 2nd. Murphy and Odenaal put on a 30 run partnership. But eventually Murphy fell fowl to Quail and Odenaal to Jordan. PCC won 20 runs. In the day’s second game, Island Cricket Club (ICC) took on Laguna Cricket Club (LCC), ICC won the toss and elected to bat first. ICC started well and were in the 50s with only two wickets down. However, an unlucky wicket fell just before the break. But they were confident they could up their rate in the
remaining ten overs. But after the drinks break, R Cooper took an amazing catch, J Prakash took four wickets and M Kohler a further three, wiping out ICC’s middle and most of their lower order. LCC were back in the game ICC reached 114 after the 20 overs. LCC started slowly and wickets constantly fell. That was until A Khan took to the crease with the score at 43 for 4. On his first ball he smashed the ball for six. When Khan fell at 76 Laguna looked to be on the way to a win, but ICC’s Surrinder took five wickets in short succession. When J Friedrichs walked to the crease it was down to him and R Cooper to reach 22 runs from four overs. Friedrichs held his own against some tough bowling from ICC and the crowd were eager to see if ICC could finally get to beat their arch nemesis Laguna. And with only a few balls remaining Cooper was caught on the boundary giving ICC their first win of the series.
BISP athletes scorch competition PPL mourns death of Cherry TRIATHLON EARLY LAST SUNDAY morning (Sept 25), at the Saphan Hin public pool south of Phuket Town, a group of around 200 athletes – including a strong team from BISP – were feverishly setting up bikes and preparing equipment. The pool parking lot was the transition area for both the Andaman Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon. At around 6:30am, after all the warm-ups were finished,
the first wave of swimmers set off and the run began for the duathletes. An hour and fifteen minutes later the first finishers would start to arrive. The tough course had the athletes cycling down to the Phuket Aquarium then running loops around Saphan Hin Park. To say that BISP had a good showing would be a rather large understatement. They collectively took home four age group championships along with another three podiums finishes. It was an outstanding effort.

LAST THURSDAY’S (Sept 22) Patong Pool League (PPL) was somewhat of a sombre affair compared to most weeks as players came to terms with the death of league regular Cherry Andy who played for both the Martin Swiss and Simon and Oils teams. Cherry recently picked up a virus, and although she received hospital treatment, doctors were unable to stop fluid passing to her lungs and brain and she passed away last Wednesday morning (Sept 21). Speaking to The Phuket News following Cherry’s death, PPL organiser Scott Griffin said, “Today we lost one of our best pool players, 31-year-old Cherry Andy. She was always so happy and was a great player. “Everyone in the pool league knew her and she will really be missed by us all.” But Cherry’s death didn’t mean league action had to stop, in fact, Scott said that continuing with the league as per usually is what Cherry would have wanted. “She loved her pool and
Cherry Andy was a regular player in the PPL. would have wanted play to go on. Cherry wouldn’t have wanted us to cancel the games despite us all being in state of shock at losing such a great person,” he said. And in last Thursday’s action, Wet Dreams managed to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points following a 7-4 win away to Martin Swiss, and 1Bar suffering a shock 6-5 loss away to Ting Tong Bar only helped them ease away slightly from those in contention for the top spot. Ting Tong’s win also moved them up to 3rd in the table now just one point away from 2nd placed 1Bar and six from 1st placed Wet Dreams. Elsewhere, Champs Bar
suffered a big 2-9 loss at home to M&M Bar giving M&M just their second win of the season, and dashing any hopes Champs had of catching up with those battling for the title. Natalie Bar had the biggest win of the night thrashing Simon and Oils 10-1 at home and bringing them up to joint 4th in the table, while Dirty Nellies played away to Genius, but despite starting strong and winning most of the singles rounds, they still come away losers with the score at 6-5. Sports Bar were awarded the automatic 11 points this week as they had been set to play Amigo who have already dropped out of the league.

‘Duyfken’, the record setter FISHING
CAST AWAY Jimmy Stewart info@fishinginphuket.com

his month’s yarn starts with a trip back in time, back to 1606 when Williem Janszoon (Australia’s Columbus) was the first European to discover Australia on a little “privateer” called Duyfken, Dutch for “Little Dove”, making this cute little ship the Aussie equivalent of the Mayflower, Santa Maria or Mary Rose. Now you may ask, “What’s Jimmy prattling on about Australian history for, especially in a fishing column based out of Phuket?” Well me Jolly Jack Tars, for any of you who know Brian “Mad” Mohally, you were actually witnessing history, through his experiences of another famous boat of the same name, Duyfken, a boat, that if it wasn’t for her famous predecessor, would be up there with Hemmingway’s Pilar and Noah’s Ark. Why? Because this boat

Duyfken has more records than any craft afloat. has caught more IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) world records and Ghanaian (Africa) records than any other sports fisher. As I write, and having sold Duyfken, Brian is on his way to the Philippines to oversee a US$280,000 refit of this custom built sports fisher. Designed by FW Woodnutt, this “40” Riviera has a planing hull similar to that of the torpedo boats of WW2,
and can turn on a piece of eight using her two powerful engines for steerage. Brian can’t remember how many records he has, as many have been subsequently broken, but between Brian, and the many professionals who have owned and chartered the boat over the years, including the IGFA “Hall of Fame” angler Peter B Wright, Duyfken has more records than any craft afloat.

A visit to Mad Mohally’s Bar (Irish Bar) in Rawai, Phuket is a must for all Big Game afishinados as the walls are covered in photographs, and trophies of record catches and fishing experiences that most devotees can only aspire to in their wildest dreams, many of which were taken from Duyfken. After her refit, Duyfken will spend four months on the Australian Great Bar-
rier Reef, four in Sai Pan, (Marianas Trench) and two in the Philippines, with Brian retaining a few weeks every year to work on his already considerable reputation as a fisherman AND storyteller, the latter being an occupational hazard for us old salties. And this month’s humour, since I am writing about boat’s names, here’s a few crackers: Campbell’s Sloop, SeaNile, Titan Uranus, Shipfor-Brains, Wasted Seamen, A-Salt Weapon, Settlement & In Solvent Sea.

hailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang is trying to instil a new belief in his men as they attempt to resurrect their hopes in Group B of the final Asian phase of qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. The team left for Abu Dhabi on Monday (Sept 26) to play the United Arab Emirates on Oct 6 before facing Iraq in Tehran on Oct 11. Thailand have been left in a tight corner after losing their first Group B match 1-0 to Saudi Arabia in Riyadh before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Japan in Bangkok. Australia and Saudi Arabia have six points each, three ahead of the UAE and Japan. Thailand and Iraq are still looking for their first point. The top two teams of each of the two groups earn tickets to Russia 2018. The two third-placed teams meet each other with the winners taking on a Concacaf side for another berth.

He is expecting a draw against the UAE and a victory over Iraq, who drew 2-2 with Thailand both in Bangkok and Tehran in the previous round.
Kiatisak said, “It is always difficult to play away from home but the players should think positive. I have told my players not to get frustrated by what could be biased officiating and should rather concentrate on their own game. “We are not far behind
the Middle East teams, but we need to apply ourselves on the field.” Kiatisak added that there may be a warm-up game before the UAE match, but nothing could be confirmed at this stage. Bangkok Post
THE GOVERNMENT WILL host a reception for Thailand’s Paralympic contingent on Tuesday (Oct 4). The party, to be presided over by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, will be held at Government House at 6pm. There will be a parade from the Sports Authority of Thailand headquarters in Hua Mark to Government House, starting at 2pm. Thailand won six gold, six silver and six bronze medals at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month. They were 23rd in the medal standings among 159 participating nations. It was the country’s most successful Paralympic cam-
paign since the Kingdom first took part in the Games in 1984. The gold medals in Rio were won by wheelchair racers Pongsakorn Poyae and Prawat Wahoram, the boccia team and boccia star Watcharaphon Vongsa. Pongsakorn, Prawat and Watcharaphon each got two gold medals. Pongsakorn, 19, was the most successful Thai athlete in Rio as he also took home two silvers. Under the National Sports Development Fund’s bonus scheme for Paralympic athletes, a gold medal is worth B7.2 million, a silver B4.8mn and a bronze three million baht. The associations and coaches of the medallists also get separate rewards. Bangkok Post

Conte has pressing issues in defence Chelsea produced a defensive horror show in their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal as Arsene Wenger’s men ended a sixgame league scoring drought against their London rivals with three goals in the first 40 minutes. Chelsea’s back four seemed uncomfortable with manager Antonio Conte’s high defensive line and struggled to play the ball through Arsenal’s press. Gary Cahill was particularly poor, gifting the ball to Alexis Sanchez prior to Arsenal’s first goal, and right-back Branislav Ivanovic endured a torrid evening. Captain John Terry and young

at the bottom of the table, West Ham aren’t having the season they hoped for at their new ground the London Stadium. Here are four things we learnt from week six:
No Rooney, no problem for Man United The Manchester United team sheet for last Saturday’s game with Leicester City caused a stir after manager Jose Mourinho elected to drop captain Wayne Rooney, who has been struggling for form. The outcome did not make pleasant viewing for United’s number 10, who looked on from the bench as his teammates produced their most convincing display of the season with a classy 4-1 victory over the champions. Juan Mata slotted in for Rooney in the number 10 role and proved a far livelier presence, slamming home United’s second goal after a delightful team move involving a chipped pass from Paul Pogba and a volleyed lay-off from Jesse Lingard. Hammers’ defensive woes Aguero still the man As if anyone was in any doubt, Sergio Aguero took just nine minutes to underline why he remains Manchester City’s most valuable player. Returning from a three-match suspension for elbowing West Ham’s Winston Reid, Aguero was a constant menace for the Swansea defence at the Liberty Stadium. He opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a typically predatory finish, turning inside the penalty area and driving his shot under Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. After Swansea equalised,Aguero scored again, cheekily send-

Aguero’s 11th goal in all competitions this season ensured City would remain on top of the Premier League and extended Guardiola’s perfect start.
Just when Slaven Bilic thought things couldn’t get any worse for West Ham’s creaky defence, the Croatian coach had to watch Southampton run his back-four ragged in Sunday’s 3-0 victory for the visitors at the London Stadium. After a promising first season in charge of the Hammers, Bilic appears stuck in a recurring nightmare this term as every Premier League match brings a fresh set of indignities for his beleaguered rearguard. Conceding three at tabletopping Manchester City is understandable, but in the following two matches, West Ham shipped four goals in defeats against the less starstudded attacks of Watford

FIGHT TO THE FINISH
Rosberg and Hamilton to go head-to-head for 2016 F1 Driver’s Championship title FORMULA ONE BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com
W
hat happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? With just eight points separating Formula One’s world title protagonists after 15 races, the solution to this question is the key to the title conundrum. For two years in succession Lewis Hamilton has proved immovable atop F1’s grid of drivers. In 2014 a resounding six victories in the final seven races reversed his slow season start to secure Hamilton his first title since 2008. From there 2015 was a formality. Hamilton’s hegemony was never doubted, and 10 victories sealed him his third career championship by October. But in 2016 Nico Rosberg, Lewis’s Mercedes teammate and former ally, is a growing
force. While Hamilton struggled to find first gear after an offseason of championship celebrations, Rosberg rocketed to four irresistible victories and a 43-point title advantage over the Briton. The lead was short-lived: one Spanish Grand Prix crash and miraculous Monaco victory later and Hamilton was on a charge, hunting down the German with six wins in seven races. On the eve of the midseason break, 2016 was coming over shades of 2014 and ‘15, and with Hamilton just one point behind in Hungary Rosberg began unravelling. “I have had the best season of all the drivers,” he said. “That is the fact for me, which I am focussing on.” One week and two races later this reality ceased. Hamilton turned his deficit into a scarcely believable 19-point lead, and Rosberg’s focus was no longer on his slender points advantage but on his inability to dislodge Hamilton from the top step. It was rope-a-dope, and
it was brutal. Rosberg’s fall from what was thought to be an insurmountable lead looked fatal – few thought any different when the sport adjourned for the European summer. But since the F1’s August resumption the momentum has swung wildly back towards Rosberg. His untouchable Belgian victory was fortuitous for a penalised Hamilton’s backof-grid start, but in Italy he capitalised on his teammate’s mistake off the line to win, and in Singapore he was simply unbeatable. There is a change in Nico Rosberg, have no doubt about it. To win a Formula One world championship a driver needs not only skill but also psychological fortitude. This was Nico’s downfall in 2014, when his confidence was shattered by Hamilton’s unbreakable win streak, and those wounds were still raw as Lewis swept all before him in 2015. During the summer the mental cracks in Hungary that threatened to again derail Rosberg have been comprehensively patched.

The points game? He doesn’t play it, and if anyone asks, Hamilton is still the bar. He can only do his personal best, and if that’s enough to best Hamilton along the way, all the better. It might be a cliché, but racing one week at a time is working wonders for Rosberg. Standing on the brink of the final six races Nico and Lewis share seven pole positions between them, and Rosberg leads
the victory count eight wins to six. No driver has won so many races in a season without claiming that year’s championship. More steadying still for Rosberg is that of the remaining grand prixs he has won three to Hamilton’s two in 2015, setting the scene for an unmissable clash of two uniquely talented drivers for motorsport’s biggest prize. To ask what happens when an irresistible force meets an
immovable object is contradictory – by definition no unmovable object can exist alongside an irresistible force. The real question is whether Nico Rosberg’s championship challenge is the irresistible force Formula One has been waiting for. We’ll know in six grand prix’s time.
