Food, drink, arts, and culture — 33 reasons KC is a great place to be right now.
37 YOUR PICKS
The Best of Kansas City 2018, according to you.
Welcome to The Pitch’s Best of Kansas City 2018 issue. Thank you for reading our magazine instead of looking at Instagram on your phone. We do appreciate it. After you are done flipping through, please feel free to use our pages to wipe off your greasy hands or sop up drink condensation. It would be our honor. The thing you are holding represents our annual comprehensive attempt to highlight, as we say around the office, “good-ass shit about Kansas City.” We do this in two ways. The first, which begins on page 8, is a list of reasons we think Kansas City is a great place to be right now. It was produced by our editorial staff — people who spend all year thinking and reporting and writing about food, drink, arts, and culture in the area. This section reflects our personal opinions and enthusiasms. The second way is the Best of Kansas City readers’ poll. Earlier this year, we asked Pitch readers to nominate their local favorites in 372 categories. We then narrowed each category to the 3-5 nominees that received the most votes and asked readers to vote for the best in each category. We were delighted by how many of you participated in this year’s readers’ poll — in all, more than 337,000 votes cast — and you can browse through the winners starting on page 38. An additional note regarding the readers’ poll: we don’t meddle with the results, which means occasionally a logic-defying winner emerges. As an example, CommunityAmerica — which won several categories for which it was perfectly qualified — also won best bank in Lawrence, even though it does not have a branch there. There are a few other instances along these lines (though just a few) because, well, democracy is messy. Please don’t @ us about a readers’ poll winner you think is bad — you chose them, not us. Do we sound defensive? Sorry. This is supposed to be a celebration. And it is! We sincerely enjoy putting together the Best of KC issue every year, and we hope that our affection for Kansas City rubs off on all who peruse these pages. Truly. Thanks again for reading. REASON #1:
BKS ARTISAN ALES IS LIVING UP TO ITS NAME
Local craft beer is hardly a novelty anymore in Kansas City (or anywhere else in the country, for that matter). A slew of breweries has opened here over the past 12 months. But even with all those shiny new options, we keep returning to BKS Artisan Ales. Brian and Mary Rooney’s Brookside brewery isn’t the most convenient for visitors (for now, it’s only open weekends during daylight hours), nor is it the best place to bring your book club (the taproom is wee). But the Rooneys are consistently turning out unique, high-quality beers to a committed fan base — which is all the more impressive when you consider that they’ve been open

REASON #2:
for less than a year. There’s no one style that dominates here: our favorites range from the Holstein milk stout (the best locally brewed version of the style, bar none) to the refreshing Vacation Island sours (we still love the Cucumber Margarita) to the balanced and approachable Antithesis IPA. And as the business grows, BKS’s beers are getting even easier to love. The Rooneys added four-ounce pours to the menu so you can flirt with a flavor before you commit to a pint. They’ve beefed up their can and bottle sales, too — if you visit the brewery this month, you’re much more likely to be able to take home a four-pack of their flagship milk stout. There might be one of those in our fridge right now. We don’t expect it to last the weekend. We’ll be too busy toasting the first brewery to train us out of eye-rolling at “artisanal” beers.
TERROR TUESDAYS IS A SAFE SPACE
Something about scary movies — or campy ones that are scary for a different reason — makes them best appreciated with a crowd. Sure, you could invite coworkers to your home to watch Killer Klowns From Outer Space on your HDTV, but there’s a strong chance they will assume you are disturbed. Better to hang with other horrorheads and irony appreciators in a safe space. Terror Tuesdays — hosted at Alamo Drafthouse by local critic Adrian Torres from BoomHowdy.com — offers a weekly gathering place for kindred spirits to worship at the altar of the awful and the awesome, sometimes in the same film. Some Tuesdays it’s a classic, some Tuesdays it’s a just-plain-WTF that never even saw a theatrical release

Torres starts each night with a quick round of trivia and prizes, and by the end of the evening, people who were strangers two hours ago are bonding over the intricacies of Tom Savini’s makeup job in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. As Torres says, “We don’t just love horror movies, we live them.”
REASON #3:
SCREENLAND ARMOUR IS EXPANDING
Screenland Armour owners Adam Roberts and Brent Miller recently performed a minor miracle, luring Italian 70s prog-metal band Goblin into the

theater next month — November 15 is the date — for the smallest show on its upcoming tour. (The band will play a set and also perform its wacko score for the 1977 giallo classic Suspiria live and in accompaniment with the movie.) The occasion is the perfect way to celebrate the upcoming remake by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), which will be out for almost two weeks by then. But it’s also a good chance to ponder the success of Screenland Armour. In an era when most locally owned theaters are struggling, this North Kansas City mainstay is quietly is adding more food, a way bigger bar, and two more screens. Expansion also means more specialty film nights, including midnight cult movies, “Movies That Rock” (sponsored by Boulevard and hosted by local musicians), “Future is Femme” (highlighting women-led pictures), and “Trailblazing Directors,” a new series that will highlight deeper cuts from well-known auteurs, starting with Hitchcock, Scorsese, and De Palma. It
all goes to show that, despite Netflix and smartphones, the theater experience is far from dead. It’s just being reborn at places like Screenland Armour.

REASON #4:
MESOB IS ALWAYS WAITING FOR US IN MIDTOWN
You might say Mesob is the restaurant Kansas Citians most take for granted, or perhaps even the greatest KC restaurant that most diners might not even know is there. Predominantly serving Ethiopian and Caribbean cuisine, it’s tucked into the deepest corner of the Uptown Shoppes at Broadway and Valentine in midtown. But once you walk in, those strip-mall vibes disappear. Bright yel-
low décor and fresh flowers lighten the space, and exceedingly friendly service sets the tone. Haitian-born chef-owner Cherven Desauguste brings French culinary techniques to his Carib-Ethiopian dishes, and that training comes through both in stylish presentation and rich flavor. There’s a lot of variety here — vegans and game-eaters alike will be happy — and very little not to love. The crab cakes are lightly crispy, with generous hunks of tender meat. Silky braised oxtail is served with fresh peas, baby carrots and collard greens. Whole snapper arrives perfectly grilled over baby arugula. Honestly, we’d like to keep it our little secret. But we want this place to be around forever. So go there.
REASON #5:
THE TRUMAN FILLED A CONCERT VENUE VOID WE DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED
Between the Midland, Sprint Center, the Folly, the Music Hall, Crossroads KC, Knuckleheads, Riot Room, the Brick, and several others, we thought we had all of our music-venue needs covered. But the one-year-old Truman has proven us wrong. Thanks to its simple-but-smart stage design and layout, this 1,000-person room — on thepitchkc.com | OCTOBER 2018 | THE PITCH

REASON #6:
LOVELY LUNCHES AT THE RUSSELL
Walking into the Russell is like logging on to a certain type of folksy Pinterest page — or, as our restaurant critic Liz Cook put it earlier this year, walking into a “hipster Cracker Barrel.” You’re confronted with lovingly arranged antiques, fresh flowers, and a color palette of cool grays and copper accented with dark wood. This brunchy-lunchy Midtown spot, which opened in May, has nailed the quaint vibes its owners were after. But we’re pleased to report that the food is as good as the restaurant looks. Wood-fire-roasted chickens, beef tenderloin, and vegetables are the foundation upon which the Russell operates, and chef Amante Domingo capitalizes on all of that fire-imbued flavor to create memorable sandwiches (steak chimi), toasts (salmon and avocado), and salads (try the heirloom). And beware before you order that olive oil chocolate chip cookie for dessert: it will haunt your fuckin’ dreams. THE HEIRLOOM SALAD AT THE RUSSELL. The sight lines are clean, there’s no incline, the sound has been crisp and clear at every show we’ve turned up at, and there are enough bars — one near the entrance, two in the main room — to keep drink lines from getting out of control. Staff is diverse, friendly and professional. (At one show we shall not name, the security guy wanded our weed pen and still let us through — an act of extreme chill for which we are especially grateful.) Perhaps most important, the shows have been winners, including everyone from hometown hero Tech N9ne (who opened the venue) to First Aid Kit to Wolf Parade to Neal Brennan to the Breeders. Ol’ Harry S. would have been proud.

RUBEN LEAL’S CARAMELO TORTILLAS ARE REDEFINING WHAT A FLOUR TORTILLA CAN BE
If we’re talking flavor, we generally prefer a solid corn tortilla over the thick and chewy white flour (read: gringo) variety. But Caramelo Tortillas’ flour creations challenge our long-held notions of what constitutes a good tortilla. Actually, we’ll go a step further: these tortillas — made by Ruben Leal, native son of Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, Mexico — are the best tortillas you are likely ever to consume. Leal moved to Lawrence about 15 years ago and now works in the chemistry department at the University of Kansas. After being unable to find a tortilla to his liking in the Midwest, Leal

decided to strike out on his own with a business based on a traditional Sonoran recipe. The trick: he uses duck and/or pork fat from Local Pig in his recipes, which gives the tortillas a luscious richness and softness that is, somehow, not even a little bit greasy. (Leal’s creations are currently available at Local Pig, Red Kitchen Tamales at the Lenexa Public Market, and the Merc in Lawrence.) But the tortillas are also resilient enough to hold up against robust fillings, even as they melt in your mouth. The future that Donald Trump’s supporters want is one where Americans are deprived of these delicious-bordering-on-magical tortillas because immigrants like Leal are barred from entering the country. That’s a small reason to say, “Fuck Donald Trump and anybody who supports him.” But it’s a reason nonetheless.
A significant percentage of Kansas City’s best taquerias are located in Kansas City, Kansas, and one of our favorites is El Torito II (which is not to be confused with I or III, which are located in KCMO). El Torito II is a little slice of heaven that combines a Mexican grocery store with a taqueria, which allows you to try the tacos al pastor and then cruise over to the meat counter and buy some to cook for yourself at home. The offering that sets El Torito II apart from all other metro area taquerias, though, is the salsa chilena. Mint green in color, the salsa is fiery (fresh serranos and jalapeños), creamy (Mexican crema and avocado), savory (chicken bullion, onions, and garlic), and balanced with acid (tomatillos). Try it on your tacos first, then take a tub home to add over eggs, fish, chicken, chips, pizza — whatever. We’ll be over here eating it with a spoon.
YOU CAN BUY SALSA CHILENA BY THE TUB IN KCK
You remember those Family Circus cartoons where a black dotted line follows Billy’s tracks in the neighborhood? No? Well, apologies for being ancient, but: the line winds through the scene, showing where the boy zigzagged through yards, hopped over fences, climbed trees, and jumped over puddles. His mundane steps begin to seem something more like an exploration. We thought of Billy as we traversed Kansas City during Open Spaces, the inaugural arts festival that debuted in September and continues through the end of October. Over 100 installations and performances from local and global artists are scattered across the city, and charting a path can be a challenge. But we’ve come to see that as part of the draw. It requires you to take time out of your routine and investigate remote and forgotten landscapes. Among those is Swope Park, the festival’s epicenter and — not for nothin’ — one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Here, along the Limestone Glade Trail, one can decipher the hidden messages in Shawn Bitter’s “Burn Out” and Ebony G. Patterson’s hydrotherapy-pool-turned-memorial “…called up.” Then on to Dawn DeDeaux’s installation near Starlight Theater, where words from Paradise Lost are emblazoned on columns in reflective tape, illuminated by passing headlights. After the sun sets, maybe your line wanders along 18th Street in the Jazz District, where Charlie Parker’s handwriting glows in neon lights affixed to the side of the Boone Theater in Nikita Gale’s “KCMO I Adore Your Every Move.” On Linwood Boulevard, your line buckles and swerves through Nick Cave’s eerie, kaleidoscopic Hye-Dyve, a 14-channel video installation in a deconsecrated Catholic church. Maybe your line circles around and around, examining Flávio Cerqueira’s “Any Word Except Wait,” on the UMKC Commons, a sculpture of a thepitchkc.com | OCTOBER 2018 | THE PITCH

THE UNICORN THEATRE IS GIVING RISKY SHOWS THE ROYAL TREATMENT
We know, we know: it wouldn’t be a Best Of KC issue without another accolade for the Unicorn Theatre. We’ll get tired
of toasting the theater as soon as we get tired of its shows. The Unicorn’s last season ended with one of our favorite productions to date: Hir, Taylor Mac’s pitch-black comedy about gender politics, spousal abuse, and the delusion of normalcy. Just putting on the production was a creative risk: Hir seesaws between moments of wild tenderness and mundane violence at a grueling pace. Getting the tone right is harder than it looks. But the Unicorn’s cast and crew made it look easy. Every element of the show vibrated at a high frequency, from the acting (Carla Noack as a sentient fanny pack! Phil Fiorini as a demented Archie Bunker clown!) to the scenic design (Gary Mosby for Grime™) to the whiplash direction (Ian R. Crawford in
a star-making turn). Sure, we’re fans of the classics, too. But we’ll salute the Unicorn as long as they’re in the business of creating new ones.

roadside hotel in Tonganoxie, Kansas, that now houses the Myers Hotel Bar. Proprietors (and partners) Kate Frick and Stephanie Marchesi have revamped the place into a bar, coffee shop, and gathering space. (And there’s also a detached one-room Airbnb.) The property features loads of great original touches, including built-in cabinetry and a handsome ballroom, which is made comfortable and cool with vintage furniture, board games, and a record player. The building’s variety of uses throughout the years (salon, diner, café) have lent it a number of charming quirks as well, including a glacial stone bar, with stones harvested in Tonganoxie and carried to Kansas centuries ago by once-formidable fields of ice. What truly makes the Myers pop, though, is the hospitality. Frick and Marchesi will serve you a great latte, Americano, or impeccably crafted cocktail made using their garden’s fresh herbs while telling you stories about the hotel and their adopted hometown. You won’t want to leave.

WE CAN BRUNCH AT JAROCHO LIKE SHITFACED ROYALTY
We’ll happily dine any time of day at Jarocho Pescado y Mariscos, the unassuming KCK destination for Gulf-style Mexican cuisine. But we prefer to go for brunch, when chef Carlos Falcon stocks a formidable buffet with seafood so fresh we can taste the ocean brine in the air. The bad news: brunch is only offered Sundays, and it’s $29. The good news: that princely sum lets you eat like a king. Treat yourself to bottomless oysters on the half shell, peel-and-eat shrimp, mussel-specked paella, multiple styles of ceviche, and a whole goddamn fried pompano. If you woke up on Sunday morning with a headache, ladle yourself a bowl of menudo from the soup kettle (trust us: it’s a powerful hangover cure). If you’re chasing tomorrow’s headache, an extra $14 will

(We’re still thinking about a perfectly crusted, potato-based “scallop” that looked indistinguishable from the genuine article.) The plating is gorgeous, the hospitality is genuine, and the structured courses take all the guesswork out of what can at times be a daunting menu search. Which means: more time enjoying a fancy night out, less time peppering your server with questions about chicken broth and butter. Everybody wins.
FRESHWATER IS LETTING VEGANS IN ON THE FINE-DINING EXPERIENCE
It’s been a tough year for KC vegans. The sudden, strange demise of Füd last August and the equally abrupt and strange shuttering of Eden Alley this September have left ethical eaters hungry for good options. The good news? Chef Calvin Davis of Freshwater is stepping in as a pinch plater. Davis’s midtown restaurant was conceived, in part, as a more accessible strain of fine dining. A ten-course tasting menu here will cost you an extremely reasonable $55. But Freshwater’s vision of accessibility doesn’t stop at the check. With advance notice, Davis is happy to create a multicourse tasting menu for the vegan set,

Leduc has built. Leduc founded Karma Tribe Yoga in 2015 as a nonprofit, donation-based organization dedicated to offering inclusive, trauma-aware yoga education. (She’s considering shifting to a for-profit business model in 2019, but all classes will remain donation-based, with a minimum $5 donation). This isn’t bargain-basement yoga, though. Each certified instructor brings a special focus, be it ashtanga or Chinese medicine. And there are additional offerings to be had, like yoga-and-hiking excursions, pop-up yoga at local public parks, meditation classes, and a teacher training program. Best of all, perhaps, is the open-door culture Leduc has built, the proof of which is evident in the patchwork quilt of people who keep showing up: all races, all abilities, all belief systems, all income levels, all shapes and sizes. What Karma Tribe Yoga doesn’t offer: a pre-packaged, cookie-cutter yoga experience. You’ll sweat, you’ll twist, you’ll flow, you’ll work your core, you’ll flip endless dogs, and you’ll tackle inversions — but the emphasis is on the power of the practice, not on getting in a workout. In keeping with this credo, Leduc and co-founder Angela Cronk (of Waldo’s Hagoyah Hair Studio and Yoga Den) earlier this year introduced the inaugural Heartland Yoga Festival. A three-day gathering at Unity Village, the fest welcomed from around the country lauded yoga teachers and speakers, who offered their talents and shared their knowledge in a variety of yoga classes, panel discussions, workshops, and more. When Leduc talks about Karma Tribe Yoga, Heartland Yoga Festival, and the innumerable other yoga-related projects on her horizon, she draws on the metaphor of the heart chakra. Kansas City is not flyover country, she says: It is the heartland — the epicenter of good energy and good vibes.
REASON #15:
IT’S BOOM TIMES FOR LOCAL DISTILLERIES
Kansas City has always been a drinking town, and the endless stream of illegal liquor that flowed through our streets during Prohibition cemented that reputation. Ironically, though, the debauchery of those days also effec-
tively shuttered KC’s rich tradition of legal distilling. Some made it out alive: Holladay Distillery, founded in Weston, Missouri, in 1856, circumvented Prohibition laws by producing medicinal whiskey, and today, the company’s portfolio includes the gold medal-winning, eco-friendly 360 Vodka. But other historic distilleries were not so lucky: J. Rieger & Co., founded in 1887 in the West Bottoms, did not
see a fourth decade. But everything old eventually becomes new again. Hints of the area’s return to its liquor-producing glory days were detectable in 2010, when Union Horse Distilling Co. was founded in Lenexa, or 2013, when S.D. Rieger & Co. line is now distributed in 17 states throughout the country — and the business is growing rapidly. In August, J. Rieger announced plans to renovate its 15,000-squarefoot building in the East Bottoms and expand into the historic Heim Brewery bottling building, a historic, three-story, 45,000-square-foot space. By the time this ambitious, multi-million-dollar remodel is done (next spring, they say), it will boast daily tours, several

bars, an event space, a Kansas City history exhibit, a gift shop — and an expansive production facility that includes four stills and five 2,500-gallon fermenting tanks. Whoa. All that makes J. Rieger probably the biggest name in homegrown booze, but it’s far from the only new distiller. There’s Tom’s Town Distilling Co., whose opulent Crossroads bar is the perfect place to sip on Pendergast-era cocktails (go for its award-winning McElroy’s Corruption Gin); Restless Spirits, which has been pouring Irish-American whiskey and other products at its North Kansas City tasting room since 2016; Lifted Spirits, which opened in the Crossroads in 2016 and created Kansas City’s first traditional absinthe verte; and Mean Mule, a two-year-old label that crafts an agave spirit similar to tequila. Kansas City as craft distillery destination? We’ll cheers to that.

WE CAN (FINALLY!) NURSE A QUIET, POST-WORK PINT AT BROWNE’S IRISH MARKETPLACE
We’ve always loved Browne’s for its solid lunch counter (get the Reuben) and enviable selection of imported mustards. We’ve stared slack-jawed at its
library shelves of Irish whiskey each St. Patrick’s Day, wishing we could sample them more often. But until recently, the Midtown institution (and North America’s oldest Irish business, thank you very much) was only a watering hole on special occasions. Most days, it closed at 3 p.m. This summer, owners Kerry Browne and John McClain made our dreams come true and opened Browne’s for evening hangouts three nights a week. Finally, we could stop for a happy-hour Guinness or three and chat with McClain. Finally, we could sip a peated whiskey on the moonlit street and listen to beverage manager George Vial gush warmly about his favorite distilleries with lingering Irish vowels. The vibe here is less Irish bar than a dining room table at a good friend’s home. Your “tab” is a handwritten list in a notebook; if it’s a slow night, McClain might even drop off a little basket of

In addition to a few taps (and a lot of whiskeys), its small bar is stocked with wine and the fixings for G&Ts and Moscow Mules. They’ve started experimenting with bingo nights and pub trivia, too. But no matter what’s going on, it’s always a friendly and chill place to have a nightcap. Get here while they’re still doing extended hours. But be cool: we’re a little worried about y’all blowing up our spot.
In a college town, weekends start on Thursdays. What to do with this blessed extra evening of freedom? In Lawrence, the Replay Lounge has a suitable answer in its Three-Headed Thursdays show series. Three bucks gets you in to see three bands, and the folks behind the bar are slinging $3 Lagunitas pints, to boot, so you’re not forced to economize with PBR while you check out pop-punk, metal, hip-hop, psych rock, and all possible combinations thereof. It’s cheap, diverse, and reliably the easiest way to introduce yourself to new bands in Lawrence. Student ID not required.
This past year, the 1900 Building raised its local profile upon the opening of fine-dining destination The Restaurant at 1900. Less known, perhaps, is the way this rehabbed 1960s-era office building — located on the Kansas side of the intersection of State Line Road and Shawnee Mission Parkway — is reconfiguring the city’s fine-arts scene. The building is beautiful (they retained the mid-century tulip columns on the facade), its multiple venues are intimate, and they book the best of the best. Like who? Before the performance

Trumpeter Hermon Mehari and singer-songwriter Krystle Warren, in from Paris, performed an invite-only show in the Parkway Room. Christine Brebes flew in from Buenos Aires for a big old long-lost family reunion of a 20th anniversary show with Tango Lorca at Rose Hall. And soprano and musicologist Victoria Botero produced a series of women’s music for capacity crowds, bringing together stories and songs from Sephardic, Christian, and Muslim traditions in “Morena,” revealing the humbling truth that the struggles and joys of women are for all time, across all cultures. Then there’s premiere ensembles like Bach Aria Soloists and Kansas City Chorale, who found a welcome space here, and Park University’s International Center for Music, which moved its entire recital series from Parkville to Mission Woods. Spaces like this don’t just appear like manna. The 1900 Building is a deliberate contribution and direct benefit thepitchkc.com | OCTOBER 2018 | THE PITCH

to the region’s artistic community. It’s a welcome reminder of the joys that can sprout from mixing business (it’s a functioning office building, remember) with pleasure.
REASON #19:
ODDITIES PRINTS IS THE HUB ALL GREAT SCENES NEED
Jordan Carr is a veteran member of Kansas City’s DIY punk scene, previously known for singing in the infamous Dark Ages, co-hosting KCDIY Radio on KKFI with bandmate Justin Betterton, and snapping 35MM photos at the periphery of countless mosh pits and skate park bowls. These days, most of his time is spent toiling away at Oddities Prints, the midtown print shop where he creates bold designs and physical goods for artists and brands, local and otherwise. Aside from what’s likely a very collectible Cliff Burton plaque hanging on its wall, Oddities’ ineffably endearing vibe arises out of a creative ecosystem you can watch unfold in front of you. It’s not just a print shop. You can catch a band (perhaps Carr’s current group, Warm Bodies) in the shop’s basement (dubbed The Snake Tank), purchase that band’s t-shirts (which might have been printed upstairs), and share a beer with the crew by the fire pit in the backyard. (We’re also big fans of the shop’s annual Fan Club event, where they crowdsource bootleg t-shirt designs, democratically elect the best ones, then throw a party where you can bring your own shirt to have it printed on.) The internet makes it easier than ever to find an obscure niche to endlessly explore, or an insular clique to stick to, which makes shops like Oddities Prints more essential than ever — a space where Kansas Citians can bridge divides, hang out, and create something meaningful together.

REASON #20:
OUR DAILY NADA IS HEAVEN FOR A SPECIFIC TYPE OF PERSON (US)
We are pretty sure “opening a bookstore” comes either right before, or right after, “opening a bar and restaurant” on the Big List of Bad Business Ideas. But through some kind of divine transference, Andrea Baca and Amy Covitz have managed to turn two iffy
ideas into a brilliant one. Our Daily Nada — the name’s a Hemingway reference — is a cafe/bar that also sells books. It opened this summer in the River Market. We are super into it. The business model actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Bookstores are having a rough go of things in the age of Amazon. Adding a new revenue stream to the old bookselling model means your life doesn’t depend on how many copies of Fear you sell. Bonus: that new revenue stream — alcohol — might help coax your customers into forking over fifteen bucks for a Ferrante paperback. Speaking of the selection: it’s small but smart, and divvied up into little shelf-sections: Travel, Poetry, Essays and Letters, Local, Overlooked Classics, Used. And, of course, it’s a cafe, so you don’t have to buy a book every time you stop by, in which case you’re
The Living Room Theatre, the quirky Crossroads brainchild of Rusty Sneary and Shawnna Journagan, has always done things a little differently — and we’re not just talking about the velvet couches in lieu of folding chairs. Not long after its inception, the company began a yearly “Writer’s Den” series to promote the work of local playwrights. And Sneary and Journagan have always carved out space in their seasons for full-scale productions of homegrown plays. Last year, the couple made that focus even more explicit: they updated the theater’s mission statement to commit to exclusively producing works “written, performed, and realized” by Kansas City artists. Their eighth season lived up to that promise. In addition to a bigger and better Writer’s Den, the Living Room produced four locally devised world premieres (OK: if we’re nitpicking, one of them was written about Kansas City by a New York-based playwright.) We can’t wait to see what — and who — they’ll produce in the next year.

SPINNING TREE THEATRE KEEPS INTRODUCING US TO OUR FUTURE FAVES
Kansas City has a burgeoning theater scene with a deep pool of talent from which to draw. But you might not get that impression by scanning the cast lists at a few local companies. Directors (and artistic directors) have a merrygo-round of favorites, and sometimes, it can seem daunting for newcomers to hop on board. Not so at Spinning Tree Theatre. The seven-year-old company has continually taken chances on re-

cent grads and KC transplants, making its shows feel more current and more vibrant. Even better: when those newcomers are given the roles they need to grow and develop, the rest of the scene improves, too. We suspect other companies are taking note. We’ve started to notice a “tape delay” effect: the names of actors in Spinning Tree shows tend be splashed across other theaters’ programs a year later. Kudos to Spinning Tree co-founders Michael and Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst for taking the kinds of risks that help keep a theater scene fresh.

meeting (no disrespect to the committed, patient, and unpaid citizens who sit on the BZA). The building, a beauxarts-style beauty bankrolled by Pendergast cash, is filled with lovely design flourishes to admire. But our favorite part is the outdoor views available — for free — at the very top. Here’s what you do: walk through the metal detectors, show your ID to the security guards, take the elevator to 26, get off, then take the stairs to the 30th floor. Walk outside and gaze at your city. The walls are chest-high, but otherwise your view is unobstructed. Soak it in. And bring a jacket — the wind is chilly when you’re up that high.
Cultural organizations have long (and lazily) posited that the fine arts make us fine people, but if the last year has taught us anything, it’s that lots of our greatest artists also happen to be shitty people. Art and moral superiority are hardly one and the same. But art can certainly be therapeutic, even transcendent. And local arts organizations lately seem to be embracing that notion as it relates to the idea of wellness. One example: Kansas City Symphony has started a music-and-mindfulness program called “Sounds Relaxing” that features guided meditation, mindful movement, and string quartet. We went, and sat with

about a hundred other patrons in listening silence, and lifted our palms up to the ceiling together. It was as powerful a moment as any unexpected sforzando. You can find similar activities around town if you look hard enough. A few Saturdays a year, the Kauffman Center hosts yoga sessions, accompanied by live music, under the vaulted glass of Brandmeyer Hall. From time to time, the National World War I Memorial and Museum has hosted “Sip & Stretch” Pilates sessions, which are even better because they’re accompanied by wine. Yoga in the Park, on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, is free every Sunday — and on the first Thursday of the month, the museum hosts meditation and chanting sessions inside. Art can inspire, but we call it work, because that’s what it is for many of us. And you need a break from work. Recharge, reassess, get your breathing steady, get your muscles stretched, get your mind focused. There’s more work to be done.
REASON #25:
ENSEMBLE IBÉRICA BRINGS THE WORLD TO OUR DOORSTEP
Ensemble Ibérica’s artistic director, Beau Bledsoe, collects instruments from all over the world. He collects musicians, too. Bledsoe rounds up an eclectic core ensemble of guitarists, vocalists, and percussionists — local practitioners of Cuban, Spanish, Andean, Argentinian, and Mexican styles — as well as foreign guest experts like Mireya Ramos, of the Grammy Award-winning mariachi Flor de Toloache (who encourage the subdued, quietly respectful audience to launch gritos during the show). Through Ensemble Ibérica, Kansas City audiences are treated to this global stew of musical styles. Its concerts aren’t just about rhythmic patterns, scarves, and swishy skirts, though. Often based on folkloric practices, the performances project a mix of heartbreak and hope, a longing for a life left behind, pride and preservation of heritage. After the 2017 terrorist attacks in Barcelona, flamenco cantaor José Cortés Fernández sang with raw grief, unleashing what we all
felt. Abroad, governments try to silence many of these voices, erase their history of oppression, spin a story of saviors and saints. The music Ensemble Ibérica assembles tells us the real story — the story of survivors — and reminds us how lucky many of us are.

MOLLY BALLOONS IS UNPOPPABLE
It is tough to miss Molly Balloons at a party or fundraiser — she’s bubbly, she’s flamboyant, and, uh, she’s the one wearing a dress made out of balloons. Or maybe she’s building an art installation made out of balloons. The woman is a walking static-electricity warning sign.

Balloons (real name: Molly Munyan) has been enthralled by balloons since high school, but only in recent years has she evolved into a party fixture around town, popping up at places like Jazzoo, Bacchus Ball, Royals commercials, and birthday parties. She also has a balloon-based fashion show — this year’s is November 16 at The Abbott — where more than 20 models strut down a balloon-ified runway decked out in balloon couture. The event is reliably loud, ridiculous, and mesmerizing — just like Molly Balloons. thepitchkc.com | OCTOBER 2018 | THE PITCH

STRAWBERRY SWING IS THE CRAFTY AS CLASSICAL FUKC SCENE IS (FINALLY) EMBRACING DIVERSITY REASON #28:
We’re not the first city to start a craft fair, nor will we be the last, but KC’s love of shopping handmade, local, and small is a movement worth celebrating. So is the Strawberry Swing Indie Craft Fair, founded in 2011 and now curated and owned by Katie Mabry van Dieren. We’ve discovered so much we cherish at the Swing — everything from Carly Rae Studio’s whimsical, floral watercolor prints to Charley Forsyth’s printmaking (check out his “bye, son” bison print) to Mackenzie Becker’s bad-ass, metal jewelry about menstruation. The other great thing about Strawberry Swing is that it’s not just one fair, and it’s not just one space. The events are held year-round at rotating spots like the Alexander Majors Barn, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Union Station,

We all know classical music is white, stodgy, male, and dead. But is that changing? Nationwide, large institutions are seeing flaming fireballs of bad PR due to their unwillingness to forgo patriarchal canons. Around here, we’re starting to see the ripple effects. Which is to say: fresh perspectives in the industry. Which is to say: less white, stodgy, male, dead stuff. newEar Contemporary Ensemble and the Mid American Freedom Band now mix music by women and other
underrepresented voices into most, if not all, concerts. Other groups, such as Bach Aria Soloists, Midwest Chamber Ensemble, NAVO and Te Deum, have made a good show of devising women-centric programs this season. Even Lyric Opera of Kansas City is getting in on the game with its new Explorations Series, presenting Laura Kaminski’s “As One” last season and Sarah Kirkland Snider’s “Penelope” this season. And all three of Kansas City Symphony’s Classics Uncorked programs include works by women. Put simply, the institution of classical music must evolve, or it will die. While the concert hall is still a battlefield for acceptance and equality, the more people involved, the more likely the art form will survive beyond the next century. The more voices we hear, the stronger the message.

fish Tom’s, Cockson is the steward of an endangered brand of hospitality — one that focuses on creating a specific experience for her customers rather than trying to cater to everyone with a bland veneer of Midwest Nice. Speaking of our geographic heritage: even though this is the land of Boss Tom, we *whispers* might be a little burnt out on speakeasies. Sometimes we just want to sip a cocktail without giving a bored front-desk worker a corny “password” first. But Swordfish Tom’s isn’t really like those places. It’s truly a time-machine tribute to the golden age of the cocktail. Nestled inside a basement boiler room, it’s a small, thoughtful space with a vibe the city desperately needs: special but not formal or fussy. If we had to peg down the ambience, we’d place it somewhere between “Bohemian brothel” and “Victorian drawing room.” It’s cash-only with a shrimpy capacity — expect a slight wait on weekends — but that makes the space feel all the more intimate.

Much of the bar’s rare-bird feel is due to Cockson’s skill behind the stick. Although her cocktail list is extensive (with an entire section for imaginative riffs on the Manhattan), she’s happy to go off menu, too. Name a favorite spirit or toss out a few adjectives, and Cockson will fill in the gaps (and fill up a shaker) like a boozy game of Madlibs. We suspect we could read her a poem and she’d be able to invent a synesthetic pairing, though we haven’t tried it. We like Jill. We are intimidated by Jill. We are not going to push our luck.

urines spread at the feet of the statue. What is the meaning of this? My friend: it is the Goddess of the Broken Birds. To be more specific, the statue depicts Artemis, a goddess of animals and wildlife. Clever geocachers have designated this as a stop and bestowed upon it the name “Put a bird on it” — and that is exactly what has been done. A rotating display of ducks, owls, swans, chickens — most of them chipped ceramic and porcelain — arrive and change with the seasons, along with other accessories for the statue. Last fall, a wool scarf warmed the Goddess on a blustery day. Her adoring brood wore pieces of craft cloth, lovingly tied around each tiny, individual neck. thepitchkc.com | OCTOBER 2018 | THE PITCH

THE WHITE SCHOOLHOUSE IN LAWRENCE IS A DIVERSE, ALL-AGES PARADISE
Located on Lawrence’s northern outskirts, just as you’re almost to Teepee Junction, sits a 100-year-old building called the White Schoolhouse. Not long ago, it was a place you might rent out for a wedding reception. In the last year, though, it’s become the best all-ages venue in Lawrence. The touring bands who’ve come through, many of them
female-led, have been been spectacular: Diet Cig, Screaming Females, Downtown Boys, Chastity Belt, Waxahatchee. But it’s the local acts, says Paige Batson, the powerhouse booker behind
many of the shows there, that best rep the ethos of the place. LK Ultra, which started as a group at the annual Girls Rock Lawrence music camp, opened that Diet Cig show in February. “I think
the Schoolhouse, alongside Girls Rock, is harvesting a ripe new scene Lawrence hasn’t quite seen before,” Batson says. “That being: youthful and diverse.” We couldn’t agree more.

Plenty of just-fine quarterbacks have taken snaps at Arrowhead over the years. Some of them — Alex Smith comes to mind — we’ve really liked, even. But seeing Patrick Mahomes come out this season and throw ten touchdowns in two games was like watching a fucking moon landing. Chiefs fans are so conditioned to snoozy QBs that to see Mahomes firing passes like a rocket launcher (and connecting!) brings on an almost paralyzing cognitive dissonance: This guy is playing for Kansas City?
