LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

O T S E B

BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST BY BROCK WILBUR

Hello, dearest reader. My name is Brock Wilbur and I’m the editor-in-chief of this here publication. Most of you already know me, and some of y’all are family who I just haven’t met yet. Welcome to the Best of KC 2021 issue. This is gonna be a ride! The Best Of issue is the kind of thing you keep on your coffee table, in your office, or in your bathroom for the next year. We’re fine with this—we just love being useful. I found The Pitch pretty useful before I ever even worked here. I came to Kansas City for my honeymoon in 2017. On the trip, my wife and I thought, “Hey, uh, does this place kind of rule?” Then we went back to our one bedroom apartment in Los Angeles and spent weeks spiraling over how much Kansas City did, indeed, rule. So we packed boxes, moved to KC, and never looked back. During that honeymoon, the first thing a local advised us to do was to grab a copy of The Pitch’s Best Of magazine. “That’s all you need,” they said. And they were right. We followed suggestions, page by page, thinking this was the best way to get the most out of a long weekend. It turned out to be the thing that set the foundation for the rest of our lives. That year’s Best Of magazine is what, fairly directly, convinced us to abandon everything and everyone we knew and move to this place. There are infinite words I could put to paper waxing poetic about this issue, but I’ll settle for these: I spend a good deal of my time telling my loved ones—co-workers, friends, and family alike—just how proud of them I am. Our Best Of issue, in all of the best ways, feels like we’re now turning the spotlight on you and saying, “Hey, Kansas City. It’s been a rough year. But we are darn proud of you.” Pitch in and we’ll make it through,

HOUSING UNIONS ARE GETTING THE JOB DONE Across the city, rent prices continue to rise and landlords continue to prize profit over people. Over the past year, rent increased from anywhere between 6-13% in Kansas City. In the face of gentrification and developers taking over the city, KC Tenants, KC Homeless Union, and other tenants unions are ensuring that housing becomes equitable. This year, KC Tenants successfully ran Zero Eviction January and prevented hundreds of evictions from taking place in the middle of the pandemic. The KC Homeless Union forced the city to pay attention by setting up two different protest camps, and created solutions so that many unhoused people wouldn’t spend the freezing winter outdoors. They didn’t stop there. From the People’s Housing Trust Fund to organizing tenants all over the city to prevent developers from pricing out residents, these unions are working to ensure that we all have access to safe, affordable housing.

CELEBRATING REDEMPTION ARCS In 2020 The Pitch released an investigation into sexual harassment, racism, verbal abuse, and uncontrolled substance abuse at Port Fonda. Later that year, we published a report on the workplace harassment and unsafe working conditions at the former Alamo Drafthouse. Then, early in 2021, we

PORT FONDA REOPENED UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP TRAVIS YOUNG

wrote on the toxic environment at Betty Rae’s. The news surrounding these iconic Kansas City establishments shocked many when the investigations were released—but all three of them have incredible redemption arcs. In March of this year, Betty Rae’s reopened with new ownership after a months-long closure. Alec Rodgers, who has worked for Betty Rae’s since 2018, took over as owner and brought along many of the employees that left due to the previous owner’s abuse ; they agreed to come back, dedicated to keeping it running as KC’s favorite place to get dessert. The team bought the recipes and ensured customers that they wouldn’t see many changes in the beloved establishment—except for a happier, safer staff and varying improvements. After the Port Fonda exposé, Beer KC—the restaurant group behind Beer Kitchen, Mickey’s Hideaway, and Char Bar—bought the restaurant and reopened it this summer. Changes to the restaurant included a new executive chef and staff members. The name and the menu of the restaurant remained the same. Patrick Ryan and Jamie Davila, who created and perpetuated the issues at Port Fonda, have no involvement with the restaurant (a move that we can all agree is a positive change). Unlike Betty Rae’s and Port Fonda, Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet does not have the same type of redemption tale—but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Alamo Drafthouse officially closed the theater in March after it was shuttered for a year. B&B Theatres bought the hazardous building and did extensive renovations. With more plush seating, a larger bar area, and lots of community feedback, the theater reopened this October. This time, thepitchkc.com | November 2021 | THE PITCH

OUR PICKS it’s with family-owned, Missouri-based ownership that will ensure employees are truly taken care of.

THE UNENDING WILL OF WILLA ROBINSON If Willa’s Books & Vinyl is a phoenix, Willa Robinson is the force that keeps breathing fresh life into the ashes. The name “Willa’s Books” has been around since 1994 as Robinson sold books throughout the city as a vendor. She ran bookselling tables on 18th and Vine during jazz and blues festivals, but it wasn’t until 2007 that Robinson opened her first brick and mortar. It was a rocky four and a half years throughout the recession that led her to close in March of 2012. Since 2015, Robinson has situated her vast collection of African American books and vinyl in one room of a building off at the corner of 63rd and Citadel, called Location 1. The addition of “& Vinyl” in the name—and the wares—is new in the last year. Now, Robinson’s store is being threatened yet again. She currently runs one of the only Black-owned independent bookstores

with a physical location in the metro area. Her building, which has long been an incubator for young, Black businesses, was bought earlier this year by an Omaha development company. Robinson and her neighbors are being told they’ve got to move out by April 2022. In May, she created a GoFundMe to cover moving expenses—over the course of the next few months she raised more than $15,000, exceeding her original goal of $10,000. The loss of the building, its history, and its current businesses will be in-

calculable. At the very least, Robinson can keep her eyes on the horizon as she scopes out a new location. One that she hopes will have twice the space, better parking, and more opportunities to snag foot traffic. As it is now, her shelves are double-stacked with hidden treasures and very little elbow room for browsing. But happily browse we will— at her current location, and whatever space becomes the store’s new home.

THIS RIDICULOUS STATE TURNED 200 On August 10, 1821, Missouri entered into the U.S. as the 24th state—now, 200 years later, we’ve been taking a hard look at the mountains and valleys that pockmark its history. Missouri’s tendency towards rightwing extremism has been a long-lasting, dangerous malady. Just as the bicentennial year was kicking into gear, white supremacist Josh Hawley launched us into the national spotlight with his raised fist at the Jan. 6 Capital insurrection, as did the McCloskeys with their gun-waving at a BLM protest in St. Louis. At the same time, Missouri has been

home to many folks whose accomplishments are woven into the weft of our state and nation’s existence. DeRay McKesson: an activist and early leading figure in the BLM movement who worked on the ground in Ferguson after the killing of Michael Brown. Jon D. Barnett: a queer rights advocate and founder of the Human Rights Ordinance Project. Maya

STEVEN G; BARBER: AILELE IGHILE; WARDROBE: VANNE MCMILLAN, TERESA BROOKS MONTE LAW

Angelou: a poet, actress, activist, and memoirist, known for works including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The list goes on and on. Happy birthday, Missouri. Bring on the fireworks.

THE KANSAS CITY CENTER FOR INCLUSION IS A TRIPLE E BATTERY IN MIDTOWN The Kansas City Center for Inclusion has been a “triple E battery” energizing the metro area with engagement, education, and empowerment around queer issues and community since 2017. This June, they officially grew up and moved out to their new digs on Broadway in the space above Woody’s. Since moving, KCCI has been able to house more LGBTQIA+ organizations in their space. They’ve also added programming such as their Youth Meet Ups, the cleverly-named Queer & Bazaar Arts Fair, and Inclusion Adventures, which are the queer adult field trips of your dreams. KCCI is also excited about the Gender Affirmation Project that was initiated this year, where they give out $1,000 grants to folks seeking gender affirmation surgery. As former President Stedmond Ware says, “We are extremely proud of our entire Kansas City community for their ongoing support, diligence, and willingness to hold us accountable for the important task and opportunity we have.”

STEVEN G. GETS THE GOLD AS FAR AS WE’RE CONCERNED For over a decade, Steven Green mostly stood behind the camera as a photographer and creative director. When he stepped on the other side of the viewfinder for a shoot with Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, he springboarded into the deep end of the modeling world. Since then, he’s been featured in seemingly countless campaigns for national brands as he continues to push for diversity and inclusion in modeling, especially when it comes to plus sized representation for men. “One year ago today my life changed forever!” Green wrote on Instagram on Oct. 2, 2021. “[Rihanna] took a chance on ya boy ... and the world showed mad love! Ya boy went VIRAL.” The world wasn’t the only one to show Green some mad love. Kansas City had plenty to share when, in August, he was the winner of Best Male Model in Kansas City’s People Choice Awards. Green is also a nominee up for Emerging Male Model at The Full Figured Industry Awards Nov. 6.

PULSE TOPOLOGY BARES OUR COLLECTIVE HEARTS Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Pulse Topology” exhibit was installed in the Kemper Museum of Contemporary thepitchkc.com | November 2021 | THE PITCH

OUR PICKS Art in June of this year. In his site-specific work, Lozano-Hemmer created an all-encompassing scene of upside-down mountains and valleys using 3,000 LED filament light bulbs suspended from the ceiling. The sight of the exhibit alone is breathtaking, heightened by the interactive experience it brings to the visitor. A touchless remote technology, called PPG, was included in “Pulse Topology” to coordinate the thousands of flickering bulbs to a single person’s heartbeat. Hold your hand under one of the sensors and suddenly the entire room is filled with the sights and sounds of your individual humanity. When other people fill the room, each taking a turn with the exhibit, “Pulse Topology” reminds visitors of their shared connection. Lozano-Hemmer’s installment is especially poignant after over a year of isolation. An exhibit where strangers can safely share their connection to each other—and be reminded of the gift and beauty of life—without speaking or touching is a true gift. “Pulse Topology” is available for view until January 2, 2020.

KC BLACK OWNED IS THE DIRECTORY FOR ALL OF YOUR SHOPPING NEEDS “Being a one-woman show requires a high level of commitment, perseverance, and consistency,” says Chelsey M, the founder of KC Black Owned. She started the website and Instagram account in July 2020 as a directory for

folks to locate and support local Black businesses. In the past year, KCBO has grown by over 250 listings and counting. But the directory was just the starting point. Fast forward to 2021 and Chelsey is hard at work connecting directory businesses to vendors, writing website features, and giving workshops on topics like social media. [Official Pitch advice: Check out @kcblackowned on IG to marvel at the work of the “Reels Queen!”] Chelsey has felt the love from the local community, and as KCBO grows we can help by donating money or spaces for pop-ups, and sharing the news with friends and on socials. As the holiday season is fast approaching, is there a better place to buy presents than a KCBO business? [Nope!]

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP YOLI What started as Marissa Gencarelli wanting a taste of her home in Sonora, Mexico turned into Kansas City’s favorite tortillas. She and her husband, Mark, opened up Yoli Tortilleria in 2017. Their quest for the perfect taste and texture catapulted them to stardom around the city. When the Gencarellis opened up their Westside location in 2019, they had a cult following that was growing by the day. If you have yet to make it to Yoli’s storefront, you’ve likely already tried their tortillas. Numerous taco spots and restaurants around the metro rely on Yoli tortillas for their flavor and the way they hold up. Sonoran-style flour and corn tortillas line the shop. In addition, Yoli has a wide selection of agua frescas, salsas, and paletas. They’ve been

A SPREAD FROM YOLI TORTILLERIA ALYSSA BROADUS

hosting pop-ups from their Westside location throughout the year—partnering with chefs to create fusion worth standing in line for. As they grow, they continue to widen their selection and attract more hordes of hungry followers. Yoli ascended to fame quickly, and deservedly so.

DAVID DASTMALCHIAN’S STAR IS STILL ON THE RISE There’s no shortage of creative talent with their roots in the Kansas City region, but something about David Dastmalchian strikes us in a different way. In the last eight years, he’s gone from small but memorable turns in movies like Prisoners and Ant-Man to meatier roles in The Suicide Squad and the hotly-anticipated Dune. We’re particularly moved by his own moves to bring the film industry to his hometown: “One of my missions as a filmmaker,” says Dastmalchian, “is to help the KC film office to push for comprehensive tax incentives and get state legislators to get behind the idea of how much capital and business we could bring into our places.” Dastmalchian is not just the native son we’re proud of. He’s the native son we’re actively rooting for.

KANSAS CITY TO WELCOME 550 AFGHAN REFUGEES The first family of Afghan refugees arrived in Kansas City Sept. 17. Of the 1,200 families projected to make Missouri their new home, Kansas City resettlement agencies have offered to help up to 550 groups settle in the metro area, according to Mayor Lucas. The process of welcoming our new Afghan neighbors starts with a trio of local agencies—Jewish Vocational Service, Della Lamb, and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas—who receive assignments from the U.S. State Department’s Office of Refugee Resettlement. They meet refugees at the airport, help them find housing, and provide necessities for families who arrive with next to nothing. These groups are allotted a few days to a week for this process, after which organizations like KC 4 Refugees take over and continue to collect and distribute basic household items, clothing, and monetary donations. Among the more pressing concerns is a lack of affordable housing and reliable transportation, a dire need for interpreters who can help bridge the language gap, tutors, and adequate childcare services. “If people want to help, they can stay in touch with us through our Facebook page [@KC4refugees], or donate money through PayPal,” says KC 4 Refugees Director Linda Zemke. “These funds allow us to purchase things that aren’t donated, or pay their rent for a month if they have [extenuating circumstances].”

A GATES BAR-B-Q SPREAD COURTESY GATES BAR-B-Q

BBQ HALL OF FAME RECOGNIZES WHAT WE ALREADY KNEW Like the rest of the city, we at The Pitch know that Kansas City-style barbecue is, without a doubt, the best in the world. No one quite does it like us, and the Barbecue Hall of Fame recognized that. Ollie Gates, owner of Gates BarB-Q and the man responsible for growing the Gates restaurants and legacy into what they are today, was inducted this year. Arthur Bryant—former pitmaster, owner of Arthur Bryant’s, the originator of burnt ends—was posthumously added to the Hall as a legacy inductee. Both men can credit their barbecue style to Henry Perry, the creator of Kansas City barbecue. Bryant worked directly under Perry and Arthur Bryant’s was a legacy restaurant that Perry left to him after his death. Gates learned the Perry way of barbecuing from Arthur Pinkard, Ol’ Kentucky’s (the original name of Gates Bar-B-Q) pitmaster and a former apprentice to Perry. Gates and Bryant continued Perry’s legacy and made Kansas City the barbecue capital it is today. It was past time for the Barbecue Hall of Fame to recognize the genius of Gates and Bryant and their contributions to barbecue. Previous Kansas City inductees include Perry, co-founder of Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue Jeff Stehney, and Dr. Rich Davis, creator of KC Masterpiece barbecue sauce.

NOAH SPENCER: WEDNESDAY AND EVERYDAY Noah Spencer is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and the next name you need to know in music. Spencer joined The Greeting Committee in 2018 as their live band member—playing guitar, bass, keys, and vocals during their tours. Even on TGC’s tour, it was clear Spencer had incredible potential. On the 2019 leg of the band’s tour, Spencer began working on solo music. That work resulted in two singles released this year: “Wednesday,” featuring Addie Sartino of TGC, and “Over My Head.” We covered “Wednesday” earlier this year, when Spencer released a live video of the single recorded at Crossroads Hotel, and have been listening to it ever since. Spencer gives listeners time to breathe as his instrumentals and vocals transport you to a world of his creation. His debut EP, Census, premieres Nov. 19. We’ll be listening, and so should you.

OAK & STEEL IS THE PLACE TO PRE-GAME A KAUFFMAN CENTER SHOW Like everyone else in the city, we love the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. We long for any excuse to Sharpie over the scuffs in our dress shoes and trek over to Moshe Safdie’s gleaming adjustable barbell for a show. The only thing we don’t love is pushing through an endless line in the Kauff-

man Center lobby to spend $11 on a vodka soda. That’s why we pre-game at Oak & Steel, the warm and well-lit Crossroads spot just down the street at 17th and Wyandotte. Drinking here feels like using a cheat code: you can order full or half pours from a rock-solid tap list without fighting long lines of concert-goers. If owner Kyle Howard is behind the bar, you’re in good hands. Howard is that rare beer and spirits nerd who knows the answer to any question you might care to ask but isn’t an insufferable jag about it. If beer isn’t your speed, the bar has a globe-trotting whiskey selection, too. You’ve got time to order a few rounds here. After all, what’s the hurry? You can see the silvered curves of the Kauffman Center from the bar. You’ll be able to slip into your seat half-buzzed before those lobby-swilling suckers have finished signing their credit card receipt.

WE OPEN SHOP MAKES DREAM PROJECTS A REALITY We fervently believe that you can bungle your way through most things in life with the right mix of bravery and shamelessness (this paper’s continued existence is proof enough). But even we know not to shortcut some learning curves—say, changing the blades on a table saw or using an arc welder. Which is why we (and our limbs) are thankful for We Open Shop, a monthly open workshop at Maker Village designed to help women and non-binary people gain confidence in wood and metalworking. Facilitators

Angelica Sandoval, Greta de la Rua, and Megan Pace are knowledgeable and patient coaches who will meet you where you are, whether you’re ready to master dovetail joints or just want to learn the difference between a planer and a miter saw. Participating couldn’t be easier: you bring a project idea and some materials, and We Open Shop’s facilitators will help you make it a reality. But the specific thing you create is secondary to the knowledge and training you gain. No one here is going to make fun of your weakpot drafting skills. They’ll pick up a pencil and show you how it’s done.

TWO DECADES OF BROADCASTING LOCAL BANGERS A little over 20 years ago at the University of Central Missouri, The Bridge hit the airwaves for the first time. The station made its way out of Warrensburg 12 years later, heading 60 miles down the road and setting up shop in Kansas City. Then, what we know as 90.9 The Bridge sprung to life, giving the mic to KC’s local music scene both on air and in person at live shows. Through years of genre changes, a shift to a Noncommercial Triple-A station form, the funding challenges inherent to any small artistic endeavor, and a pandemic wrecking their slate of live shows, The Bridge has pulled through, continuing THE BRIDGE CONDUCTING A LIVE SHOW AT 2019 BOULEVARDIA THE BRIDGE

to grow with its listeners in mind. “It’s not about ‘Do I like the record,’” says co-founder Jon Hart. “It’s about, ‘Do we think the community wants to hear this record?’” Happy 20th birthday year, The Bridge, from your cool, 41-year-old friend, The Pitch.

KCPL’S WIKIPEDIAN IN RESIDENCE GIVES US THE TOOLS TO EDIT OUR OWN HISTORIES In June, the Kansas City Public Library announced a new staff position: the Wikipedian in Residence, or WiR. Miranda Pratt is filling the post for the inaugural year-long tenure—they are the first WiR paid by a public library in the U.S. Pratt’s job is multifaceted and community-facing. One of their primary responsibilities has been to update and edit Wikipedia and its metadata based on resources from the library. They are also leading free workshops on how to edit Wikipedia and hosting events to encourage the growth of the local KC Wikipedia community. “I think that is a really tangible way for Kansas Citians to [get involved]: Learn how to edit Wikipedia and then write what they believe is important,” says Pratt. “I want to have enough people who know what they’re doing and how to navigate the platform that they can feel comfortable writing their own histories.”

JACKIE NGUYEN, OWNER OF CAFE CA PHE TRAVIS YOUNG

CAFE CA PHE BRINGS THE COFFEE AND THE CULTURE When Jackie Nguyen opened Cafe Cà Phê last year, we knew the city was in for a treat. What we didn’t know was how much of a dynamic force for good the coffee shop would be for the city. Throughout the year, the team at Cafe Cà Phê held a Stop Asain Hate vigil following the Atlanta attacks, hosted a plethora of pop-ups to help out and collaborate with small businesses around the city, and constantly uplifted underserved communities. With a dynamic menu that will keep you coming to every single popup and make you a regular at the shop’s residencies with other local businesses, Cafe Cà Phê has created a devoted community that is committed to seeing the shop succeed. And with a new brick-and-mortar building underway, we have no doubt they will do just that. Everything about Cafe Cà Phê is Hella Good [pun entirely intended].

here to rave about three local businesses making sex toys and gear that take pride in what they do. Each is focused on serving the community without shame, stigma, or charging an arm and a leg, but with a little extra kink. Ray Margo of Sinsual Steel (@ sinsualsteel on IG) has been creating handmade BDSM implements since the early ‘90s. The name Sinsual Steel came from Margo’s original desire to create high-end steel kink furniture. He’s since pivoted to handheld items and is darn good at it. Margo takes custom orders and strives to make pieces unique. He puts it simply: “I enjoy my craft.” Founded by Faye Steiner-Woods, Red Hare Leather (@redhareleather on IG) makes wearable gear affordable without charging more for larger sizes. “Leather gave me a sense of sexiness I struggled to find in most clothes,” Steiner-Woods says. Now, they love helping people feel that same way. Steiner-Woods offers custom fittings for locals, or out-of-towners can send in measurements. Co-owners Stan, Clint, and Kevin opened EmCity (@emcitykcmo on IG) May 9, 2020. While their tagline of “fun things for fun people” is cute, it’s a bit tame for what they really do as a sex shop complete with vibrators, butt plugs, and bachelorette gear. They’re also a custom leather shop: “If we don’t have it, we can probably get or make it,” Stan says. Not only can they make custom sizes, they have a wide variety of color options available.

DA’BOMB HURTS US IN ALL THE BEST WAYS You may have seen Da’Bomb Beyond Insanity hot sauce on the incredibly popular YouTube series Hot Ones. The intentionally punishing hot sauce is manufactured in Kansas City, Kansas by Spicin Foods. While it’s only the third spiciest sauce in the Hot Ones lineup, it’s known for its overbearing heat. “Da’Bomb isn’t about nuance, and that’s kind of why it works,” says Chris Schonberger, creator of Hot Ones and general manager of the magazine First We Feast. “It’s just a stick-your-tonguein-an-electrical-socket type of experience. In the novelty hot sauce category, it is king.” Da’Bomb’s novelty renown helped Spicin Foods get through the pandemic with its constant stream of sales. This

year, Spicin Foods sold its millionth bottle of Da’Bomb—adding pointless, novelty suffering to the list of things Kansas City is known for.

QUITE FRANKLY, YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO QUITE FRANKLY Though their lastest singles show off a more mature sound, the members of Quite Frankly are only between the ages of 16 and 20 years old. The band formed in 2017 after the five young musicians, all the members of the Overland Park School of Rock, decided they wanted to play their own music and experiment with their sound independent of the organization. Pulling away from School of Rock caused some drama, but it enabled the band to grow creatively. “We just hope listeners feel somewhat uplifted and seen by our music,” says vocalist Carolyn Armstrong. “Sometimes things are easier put into a song than said aloud. I want people to scream along to our songs in their cars and turn them up at parties.” It should not come as a surprise that a band composed of young adults can so easily tap into the emotions many of us feel. Their discography, though slim right now, marks the beginnings of what will undoubtedly grow to become a powerful repertoire. “blue / red” and “Is This Still Even Fun?” belong on most any playlist, and Quite Frankly is on our list of beloved hometown bands.

Ne’er a significant deadline goes by in The Pitch office where we aren’t burning a candle from Gifts By Birdie, soon to be rebranded as Effing Candle Co. Created by Birdie Hansen, this woman-owned and LGBTQIA-friendly business espouses joy and relaxation. You simply cannot be in this office without hearing at least one person declare, “Birdie is a gift from God!” each week. [We’re enjoying a sexy little saffron and tobacco candle as we’re writing this now.] Hansen has much to brag about when it comes to her hand-poured product, from the all-natural vegan wax to the eco-friendly wooden wicks. But perhaps her greatest superpower is her caustically brilliant candle names that refuse to beat around the bush. Care for a whiff of “Josh Hawley Sucks?” How about “Get Fucking Vaccinated?” We are particular fans of “Eat the Rich, Peg the Patriarchy.” Take fate into your own hands and make your day a little better: follow Hansen @EffingCandleCo on Twitter.

THELMA’S IS SERVING UP GREAT FOOD AND COMMUNITY Thelma’s Kitchen, the city’s first donatewhat-you-can cafe, has been serving healthy, delicious food from its spot at 31st and Troost since the summer of 2018. The community-focused cafe serves meals for a suggested donation of $11 but is ready to give complete meals for free to any neighbors in need. What really made Thelma’s shine this year is how quickly the cafe adapted to COVID-19. With people not being able to eat in person, Thelma’s created boxed lunches to serve out of a to-go window. The team’s adaptability not only ensured they continued to serve food-insecure people in KC, but that they were also able to expand Thelma’s and offer more services to the community. Thelma’s feeds people regardless of money—but more importantly, they are focused on creating bonds between neighbors and bringing people safely together in an era of separation. Order a boxed lunch today or cater Thelma’s for your next event to taste the best community-centered food that Kansas City has to offer.

CLOTHED BY CLOTHZ MINDED Since 2010, Nicole Ortega has been running her sustainable collection boutique in the heart of Westport. The thoughtfully curated store is all second hand, picked by Ortega herself. Whether it’s highly discounted designer goods or affordable closet staples, shoppers can score incredible deals here. The best part about the store is Ortega’s drive and commitment to giving each customer the best experience possible. She’s constantly updating the store’s inventory (which means great periodical sales), selling clothes

on Instagram and in shop, and tailoring each interaction to the customer she’s working with. For sustainable shopping at a store run by a caring and knowledgeable person, there’s nowhere we’d rather go.

THE RISE OF CANNED COCKTAILS Canned cocktails have been all the rage in Kansas City, and local brands and distilleries are hopping aboard. Tom’s Town signed a distribution deal with the Kansas City Chiefs this season and Boulevard is growing its selection of Fling Craft Cocktails. “Right now, you’re seeing all these national brands have started to devote revenue towards coming out with cocktails. The category itself has grown at least 200% over the last year in overall sales,” Mike’s Wine & Spirits owner Andy Doohan says.

Doohan has devoted a large shelving section to these new products, attributing their rise in popularity to several compounding factors, such as the oversaturation of the seltzer market and the greater interest from young and health-conscious people. “It could be that people are more stressed out from quarantine, or it could be people are just finding that they’re easier to consume than actually buying all the ingredients and making it yourself,” Doohan says. With most of these concoctions hovering at or around 5% ABV, canned cocktails will likely continue to give craft beers a run for their money in the coming years.

SCRAPS KC

TRAVIS YOUNG

SCRAPS KC BRINGS OUT THE ARTIST IN ALL OF US Scraps KC proves its importance to Kansas City time and time again. As a creative reuse center, Scraps KC diverts a ton (over 200 tons, to be exact) of materials from landfills. In addition to providing a space for people to donate items often considered trash or un-donateable, Scraps repurposes and packages the items to be treasures for someone else. Beyond the flowers, yards of fabric, paper clips, stamps, and the occasional sewing machine, the reuse center prioritizes helping the unhoused. portunities, and survival donations to unhoused folks while providing free care kits to customers to keep with them or give to others. From saving all the stuff from landfills to providing affordable supplies to helping the unhoused, Scraps KC is showing everyone what it truly means to better your environment. Whether you’re looking for art supplies, an affordable way to get into a new hobby, or the perfect gift for someone, Scraps has it all.

WILSON’S PIZZA IS A QUINDARO CLASSIC Gary Wilson is the proprietor of Wilson’s Pizza & Grill, which he opened on Quindaro Boulevard in 1993. His homemade pizza dough, freshly cut toppings, and wide variety have been a local staple ever since. Before Wilson opened up his restaurant, no big pizza chains would deliver pizza in the Quindaro neighborhood. Wilson solved that problem by providing for the area with his food and by employing young adults from the community. You’ll feel at home when you walk through the doors of his establishment— and not just because you can customize almost anything you order. Wilson is friendly to all who enter, and will let you know about anything on the menu. Last year, Wilson’s Pizza & Grill appeared on the 101 Best Pizzas in America list by The Daily Meal. In 2017, Wilson earned the UG Black History Committee’s Business Leadership Award for all of his work. The crust is thick and just chewy enough, and the other specials on the menu, like pizza fries, wings, and burgers, are well worth it.

GARY WILSON OF WILSON’S PIZZA & GRILL VISIT KANSAS CITY KANSAS

WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL SOCCER IS BACK IN BUSINESS KC may be clamoring for the World Cup, but regardless of where those cards fall, we have scored a major goal this year: we tempted our women’s soccer team into returning to the city. The death of FCKC, Kansas City’s former professional women’s soccer club, was a blow to our self-dubbed title as the soccer capital of the nation. When founder Brad Likens sold the club in 2017, a long series of mismanagement, further ownership shake-ups, allegations of workplace harassment, and a relocation to Utah left them estranged from their hometown. But thanks to the new owners, Chris and Angie Long, alongside former professional soccer player Brittany Matthews, our local women’s soccer team has been restored to the city at long last. It’s been a rough season for the newly-formed team, KC National Women’s Soccer League, as they regain their footing, but the season hasn’t been without its wins. And as Joseph Hernandez reported for us in June, the stands at KC NWSL games are filled with young girls: “The impact this team will have can’t be measured.”

People are growing more aware of the need to be more environmentally conscious, and composting is one of the best ways to reduce individual food waste and harmful methane emissions. However, composting can be tricky, and is tough for those without yards to accomplish. Enter one of the multiple composting services in Kansas City. The services offered by providers like KC Can Compost, Compost Collective KC, Compost Connection, and others means people can easily collect organic waste in under-the-countersized buckets and then pass it off to the compost services. They do all the composting for you, and you reduce the food waste of your home. These services provide an easy, affordable way to compost and reduce your footprint, all while making your trash less smelly.

WE’RE HUNGRY FOR MORE FOOD POP-UPS Devoured Pizza. Chamoy Boi. Tamaleon KC. Avec Moi Sweets. Ragusa’s Italian Cafe. The C Word. Easy As Pie. Cafe Cà Phê. Cauldron Collective. Dead Beet Eats. There are many, many more food pop-ups that have taken over this year, and we’re here for it. With health precautions moving most things outdoors, people wanting to support local, and a pandemic-induced growth in entrepreneurship, the perfect storm was created for pop-ups to thrive in Kansas City this year. The best part about the rise of all these pop-ups seems to be their staying power. With growing and dedicated followings, food pop-ups are making weekends in Kansas City more fun and welcomingly unexpected.

RILED UP FOR RILEY THE MUSICIAN’S NEWEST RELEASE This past year, The Pitch has given a lot of ink to hyperpop ingénue Ana Kennedy Domville, known by her stage name RILEY THE MUSICIAN. In June, we got her thoughts on corporate Pride—

“[Pride is] doing whatever I want and not caring about what other people say”—and more recently, the inimitable mystery that is Montana—“I would be happy moving to Montana and just flying people up and making music.” Domville’s music career has risen on the tide of diligently engineered music feeding off a sense of magic and otherworldliness. We can’t get enough, so thank the goddess that her next album is releasing Nov. 12. The aptly-titled Montana springs from Domeville’s time in the state, as well as fresh aesthetic and musical inspirations from electronic to folk. The drop feels so close yet too far away, so in the meantime, we’ll continue to bump our favorite jams, like “99” and “Iced Out (Slowed).”

THE G.I.F.T. THAT KEEPS ON GIVING When G.I.F.T. was featured in our 2020 Best of KC issue, they had recently given their first grant of $10,000 to Ruby Jean’s Juicery to save it from closing. On Oct. 15, they hosted their first annual gala to pop the bubbly in honor of their many successes. G.I.F.T. has been combatting redlining and systemic racism by giving grants and professional development opportunities to Black-owned businesses in KC’s Urban Core since 2020. In their first year, they gave $227,000 in grants to 14 Black-owned businesses, and are projected to give $520,000 to at least 24 businesses in year two. They are almost restless in their work, continually adding new programming and business opportunities for their grantees. Their team also led the Give Black fundraising initiative this June to support BIPOC-run nonprofits, blowing their $80,000 goal out of the water with a whopping of $125,000. Just head to Hy-Vee, where you can find products from two of their grantee businesses. As co-founder and COO Brandon Calloway puts it, G.I.F.T. has gone “from a pure idea to full out impact.” He adds: “We rely heavily on community support.” To donate or volunteer, check out kansascitygift.org

HERE’S

April 8 of this year. The space, located on Martini Corner, is filled to the brim with goods from Black artisans and business owners. Beyond great products, The Black Pantry is about uplifting and supporting the Black community and creating a safe space for Black people to shop without being judged. “You can tell you’re not 100% welcomed, or you’re being watched,” says Brian Roberts, owner of The Black Pantry. “You know when you walk into a particular space, who it’s catered to. A lot of these cool trendy spaces, you know they don’t cater to Black people.” Roberts more than achieved his goal of a cool and trendy space that is 100% welcoming. The Black Pantry is continuing to do pop-ups with other business owners, but the store is always ready for shoppers to come and buy Black.

JAYWALKING IS NOW LEGAL IN THE CITY THAT NAMED IT In May, the Kansas City Council voted to remove its prohibition against jaywalking, as well as two nuisance bicycle offenses—a decision that was well overdue. Jaywalking got its name in Kansas City when The Star coined the term in 1905 to ridicule pedestrians who didn’t stay to the right and yield to others on the sidewalks. Since its inception, jaywalking offenses have prized motorists over pedestrians and encouraged subjective overpolicing when no harm was inflicted. The council quickly removed the prohibition after the mayor’s general legal counsel reported that of 123 jaywalking tickets issued over the last three years, 65% were handed out to Black pedestrians. Black people make

up only 30% of KC’s overall population. Removing the prohibition is a small step towards a more pedestrian friendly city—one that doesn’t allow police to target people for walking while Black.

CHEF JAY IS KC’S VERY OWN FOOD PRODIGY

R U O Y S K C I P T S E B R FO 1 2 0 2 C K OF

Chef Jayaun Smith is Kansas City’s food prodigy. At just 22, Smith became the first executive chef at Ruby Jean’s Juicery in 2017. In 2018, he was named Best Chef in our 2018 Best of KC. If you didn’t get the chance to try his food at Ruby Jean’s or as a personal chef to the stars, maybe you tried his fry based pop-up, Fry, in pre-pandemic 2020. Perhaps you know him from his lunch counter, Sauced, in the Crossroads. Or Just Slide, a slider joint in NKC’s Iron District. Maybe you know Chef Jay’s work from The What Truck, a food truck with a rotating variety of menus. The point is, at just 25 years old, Chef Jay is building a food empire in Kansas City. And he isn’t stopping anytime soon. This year, it was revealed that Smith was on season 20 of Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns, which featured up and coming young chefs and was recorded pre-pandemic. If you haven’t yet tried Smith’s food or had the opportunity to meet him, you need to do so soon. Your taste buds will thank you.

"Black MasterMinds show up for GEWKC. That’s a given." When Dr. Donnetta Watson founded The National Black MasterMind Group, she wanted to grow Black businesses in urban communities. But she didn’t start with her eye on her hometown of Kansas City, Kansas. “The first location was in Dallas,” she says. “Then I realized that even in my own backyard, we didn’t have an adequate number of Black business owners.” The Black MasterMind Group Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that helps Black entrepreneurs in cities across the nation access capital and develop stable business models. The Foundation provides its MasterMinds education,

coaching, mentorship, and, starting in 2022, funding opportunities. “In Kansas City, we see an array of business models, but predominantly hobbies, hookups, and hustles,” says Dr. Watson. “Our desire is to transform those into a business that is legally structured and operating under good, sound financial principles.” For Dr. Watson’s MasterMinds, the greatest struggle is developing financial literacy—once they’ve got it down, their businesses boom. To further kickstart those skills, Dr. Watson is sending her mentees to Global Entrepreneurship Week - Kansas City. In fact, she’s adamant about their attendance: “Black MasterMinds show up for GEWKC. That’s a given.” From November 8 to 14, GEWKC will celebrate innovators and job creators that believe there’s noth-

ing greater than being an entrepreneur. These festivities take the form of free classes—both online and in-person, taught by experts spanning numerous industries— as well as opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. MasterMinds and other participants learn quintessential business skills at GEWKC—but the event has even more to offer. Workshops such as “Comeback KC Ventures Demo Day” will dig into local entrepreneurs’ innovations to address pandemic setbacks. Dr. Watson is especially awed by the breadth of communities supported by GEWKC’s classes, from teenagers to returning veterans. “GEWKC gives the community an opportunity to get knowledge and training from experts in the industry and in the city,” she says. “They are building a community for entrepreneurs to connect.”
