Polly Purebred:

“You didn’t hear it from me...”

Well

My Dears… when will this winter weather end. I feel and look like a mop that’s been sitting in an icy bucket of water overnight. It has been just horrible! It seems others in the equestrian world have not been handling the weather well either, although in their cases the snow and ice seem to have seeped into their minds causing them to act like human blizzards causing chaos wherever they go. Southern Florida is definitely a reprieve from the snow and cold but not the crazy! It seems that one polo tailgate got rather out-of-control. The hostess, a rather typical white hot mess that tries too hard and usually looks like an LSD tripping simpleton…decided to have live goats at her Tex-Mex themed barbeque party. Now after Zena’s infamous fiasco with goats at the county fair leading to the audience being covered in diarrhea…I shuddered at the sight of another fool trying to handle the agitated and upset animals…especially since these had horns…well my Dears if you have ever seen an animal of any kind, dog, cat, horse, elephant, etc out of control ….it went from laughing to screams of terror in about .03 seconds flat! One goat jumped up on the main table and started urinating on the food…the fairly pissed ( no pun intended ) guests were a little slow to realize what was happening…and the host who was 3 sheets to the wind hours ago…screamed and tried to pull the goat off the table which enraged the goat with horns who rammed into her between her legs tearing her dress and sending her flying forwards and then backwards onto the grass….I have never seen someone belly flop onto a goat... it was like some mental asylum version of leap frog!!!…the site was a spectacle…and thankfully the woman was not hurt but her flying over the goat like that sent many guest into uncontrolled fits of laughter! Well she was not happy about that and stormed off trailing her ragged dress behind her!!! My Dear you never leave your guests…even under those circumstances!!! Karma Paybacks are tough… for one shady trainer who has lied and mistreated her clients for years… she finally got hers

recently!! It seems she paired up with one of the biggest liars on the circuit who was supposed to be buying a string of horses on their planned trip to WEF. The liar (whose pants should catch on fire!) had said she had arranged a farm for the trainer and herself in Wellington, not far from the show grounds. Well the trainer was in for a big surprise when she showed up at 1 am with her horses in tow to a farm that was happily occupied by the owners and their horses!!! Last we heard the Liar had changed her number and the trainer was at a gas station crying on a pay phone (probably one of the few left off 95) and heading home in shame and disgrace….the kicker is the trainer lost two good clients who she had over billed and made money off because the liar had some non-existent issue with them and convinced the trainer to throw them out to make room for the string of fantasy horses….we hear both clients are happy in Ocala showing this winter! It seems a lesson program in California turned into a Shah’s of Sunset meets Angry Grimace from McDonalds last week. It appears a rather angry mother, who made sure everyone knew that she had paid $75 for her daughters half hour lessons and that her new Mercedes was so annoying (no honey that would be your grainy-drug addled- voice…but I digress my Dears) was taking up the line because she felt that her daughter should be given a free lesson the next time because “the quality was not acceptable.” Honey… talk about quality not being acceptable…your knock off Micahel Kors and your daughter without even her own helmet, or britches, half chaps or anything … in some used old fashion bug boots is quality unacceptable….I mean really My Dears, one thing I cannot stand is to see people abuse other people because of their own frustrations in life. In this case this woman could have committed murder because Lord…from the looks of it, her life was the definition of frustration!!! So then in between screaming at the now teary eyed 70 something VOLUNTEER secretary… the horrid creature started making phone calls in what sounded like a bad attempt at speaking some other language….so enter Grimace!! Grimace is quiet and works at the stables, and yes she is large…yes larger than “Precious” on American Horror Story laying all up in the bed…so Grimace points her large finger in the Lesson Mother from Hells face and says “ B%^& you stop yelling at Mrs######” “How dare you!!” the creature screamed and of course here it came… “Do you know who I am?” to which Grimace backhanded bitch slapped her off her feet!!!! There was screaming and chairs

flying and yelling and I am pretty sure laughter…Not sure of Grimaces fate besides the cheap make up she got on her hand ….but pretty sure El Cheapo Phony won’t be coming back for that make up lesson!!! Well My Dears, that’s all for now. Remember handsome or not … parading drunk in just briefs at a beach house party and hitting on men barely over 18 and 25 years younger…is not attractive especially for someone in the horse show eye… Until Next time! GGT- FootingT, the equine division of Polysols Corporation is introducing a new blend of material geared towards the Do it Yourself Arena Owner. In the past our high quality textiles have competed successfully in a market filled with cheaper products. One of the challenges we have experienced is clients who have existing sand that is not up to par for our mainstream GGT Footing Products. This new blend has thirty percent of fibers created by elastic fiber, polyester fiber in a black color. The DIY blend is a multi-colored geo textile that easily blends with most levels of sand products . The elastic allows for more energy and bounce, while also binding and blending to the sand .The same high level geo textile is used and this blend also has the ability to deflect the glare from the sun due to its color scheme. The retail cost is .93 cents per pound which makes it the least expensive GGT Footing textile with 30 Percent fiber on the market. GGT- Footing used a local farm outside of Aiken, SC as the test arena. Christina Jason from Southland Stables in Salley, SC was the first to blend the DIY mix. By using the DIY and a GGT Footing groomer, a rototiller and a good vibrating roller they were able to blend the GGT Footing product into their existing sand by themselves with beautiful success. Their drainage prior to the installation was very good and afterwards the stability of the sand was greatly improved in many areas that had before felt too deep. Christina and her fiancĂŠ run a large scale hunter, jumper and polo sales barn. The option of an arena with great footing helps when Christina is working the sales horses, especially over jumps as there is less concussion than when jumping on the grass area that is used when flatting and schooling the polo ponies.

The elastic fiber can also be purchased separately as a component to existing arenas or new installations. We also offer a dust control product called Dust absorber. Not all textiles are created the same! GGT- Footing T Company prides itself on its level of quality control and safety to horse and humans. MICHELLE RODALL

F

or Michelle Rodal, life seems pretty perfect right now. She has a string of nice horses on the edge of big international competitions, she got married last summer, and she has a barn full of her own horses and sale horses in picturesque Rancho Santa Fe, California, a suburb of San Diego. Rodal, who recently turned 30, has spent her time recently starting over with a string of younger

horses. “I had older experienced ones and now I’m starting over with a young group. It is really rewarding in the end, but it is a process to bring them up since they are babies. We are just 6-8 months short of the next step.”

odal

KEEPS GETTING BETTER Keeps Getting Better

Rodal is looking forward to the spending those months traveling to Calgary and worldwide and putting miles on her horses. Her standout star right now is Amazing V, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding who is in his first year at 1.50 m. Rodal has had the ride for three years and brought him up the ranks and is looking forward to bigger classes in the future. He’s really special- he is a fighter, has a big heart and always wants to do well.

by Piper Klemm, Ph.D.

She said, “We take it one show at a time. He has everything going for him except experience. We are going to take the next 6-8 months just getting him to different places jumping and try to go to Calgary and see new venues and give him the mileage that he needs.” Rodal also recently purchased Darius de la Ferme Rose, an 11 year-old gelding with 1.45 m experience in Europe. Michelle Rodall...continued on page 20

Michelle Rodall...continued from page 19

Her excitement is contagious, saying “He is super nice- scopey, nice, and a bit unconventional and difficult to ride.. I’m really excited about him- I think he’s going to be the next one to get me to jump the bigger classes. He can jump anything, I just have to get the rideability. He’s really big, so I have to get the rideability under control.” Rodal recently sold her grand prix mare Tembla to Karl Cook, who has already had several successful grand prix classes with her. Rodal is excited about their rapid success together. “She’s trained by Eric Navet, which is a dream come true to have your horse associated with him- he’s a legend.” Rodal’s Uwwalon, with whom she competed in two World Cup Finals, is on his way back to the show ring after an injury. He is jumping again and progressing back up the ranks slowly.

Rodal has been working with Joie Gatlin at horse shows and raves about their complimentary styles. Rodal says, “Joie is amazing, I love everything about her system, we get along really well, and she’s into all the details, which I am too. I worked with her when I first to California about four years ago. She helps me at the shows, but we try to make it a full-time thing. She has surgery on her appendix about a week ago and was texting me about the horse from her hospital bed. She wanted to know how the horses were, what the plan was- I feel so much support from her, it is great.” For now, Rodal is going to keep sticking to the fine points and her schedule to bring your horses up and keep her upper level horses on top. She has 8-10 horses in her barn at any given time and with a recent influx of sale horses, she has been in the saddle (her CWD 2G) more than ever. “We have been working super hard, like 6 am to 8 pm, but it is all worth it in the end,” she said. Rodal explains, “I’m a really detailed oriented person.

Rodal is also spending time with Tuxpan LS, a very green six-year-old mare. She said, “I’m just doing the baby Rodal and Amazing V in the $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix at HITS Thermal. classes at Thermal, but I think that in a couple years, she’ll be super I’m super-intense when I’m focusing. I always have a special.”With the exception of Darius de la Ferme Rose, plan- always- every stride I want to be the way I Rodal mostly gets younger horses she trains on herself. imagined it and visualized it. I take it one jump at a “I think the best way to build a connection with a horse time- I break the course into sections and have a plan is to have it when they’re younger. I would prefer to for each one. A lot of people ride and get on and gobuy a 5-6 year old and have it. They know you, they’re I’m not like that. I walk the course and I know where I brought up in your system, and they build a partnership want to trot in, which way I want to circle around which with you. The Five Need-To-Knows for Stallion Nutrition By Laura Stopper Batts, MS, PAS also known as The Equine Nutrition Nerd

With breeding season upon us I get calls from clients concerned about keeping their stallions looking and feeling their best. Stallions have to perform their stallion duties as well as be shown to the owners of potential mates; therefore they need special care and attention this time of year. Nutrition is the foundation to any good equine management program. Understanding these five areas can help a stallion owner ensure their stallion’s foundation is a solid one. 1) Stallions should enter breeding season a few rating levels above average on Body Condition Score. Because a stallion will lose weight during breeding season (and therefore not look his best) it’s a good idea to add some weight before he gets “busy”. I like the Henneke Method of Body Condition Scoring and use it daily with clients. It’s easy to use, applies across breeds and body types, and any horse owner can understand the reasoning behind it.

2) Increase daily nutrients. The activity and work level of any horse is an important factor in determining the calories your horse needs. In general, for a 1,000 lb. horse, use the following guidelines: Activity Level Maintenance Moderate work Heavy work

Daily Calories Approximately 15,000 calories Approximately 25,000 calories Approximately 33,000 calories

Pre-breeding season a non-competing stallion would have an Activity Level of Maintenance. During breeding season it would bumpup to Heavy Work, twice the caloric requirements. Therefore, just to keep your active stallion at a certain BCS throughout breeding season you would need to bump up nutrient/caloric intake. Since a stallion is going to be under stress with breeding it’s best not to make changes to his diet then. So if you can bump it up BEFORE the season starts he will have a enough extra to get him through with the increase in activity and subsequent demands. I generally suggest that to raise a BCS adjust a feeding program through calories from fiber and fat. 3) Fiber As you can see from the chart below different fiber sources have different caloric values. Feed Calories Per Pound Green Pasture 245 Orchard Grass Hay 872 Alfalfa Hay 977 Timothy Hay 804 Alfalfa Pellets 970 Corn 1,536 Premium Oats 1,250 Beet Pulp 1,059 Many stallions can maintain off season on grass turnout and a good balancer pellet. The increase in caloric demands that come with breeding activity require switching/adding a higher caloric fiber source to your stallion’s diet. This is the safest and most natural way to boost overall calories. If you are not already feeding them, I would suggest adding some alfalfa hay and beet pulp to his diet. If this is already a staple in your stallion’s diet you will need to bump up the total pounds per day to increase calories.

With that said however, when scoring, you do need to adjust a tad for breeds that are designed to carry more (QH, Draft) weight and those that usually carry less (TB). You also need to FEEL as well as LOOK before you assign a score, especially this time of year when longer hair coats can appear to hide ribs, or add pounds where they really aren’t. So if your stallion generally carries a BCS of 5 (optimal) you will need to bump up his score to a 6-7. How do you do that?

4) Fat. Another way to increase a stallion’s caloric intake without drastically increasing the total amount of food consumed is to consider adding fat to his diet. Fat has 3 times the energy density of carbohydrates or protein so a little goes a long way. An added benefit to added fat in the diet is that fat calories versus carbohydrate calories could help to keep the stallion less excitable in the breeding shed. Stallion Nutrition...continued on page 26

been balanced and formulated correctly is the easiest way to ensure your stallion’s health. Various nutrients are important to the health and well-being of a breeding stallion therefore it’s crucial these nutrients are present in the correct ration balance. For example, the breeding stallion requires 40 grams of crude protein per megacalorie of digestible energy. Formulated concentrates have a variety of protein levels so adjusting the protein to compliment the hay you feed is easier with this type of feed source.

There is also research to support that providing calories from a fat source in the stallion’s diet might also benefit sperm quality and motility. As mentioned before, stallions are presented to owners of potential mates so appearance is important. A shiny hair coat, another side benefit of added fat in the diet, is important to horse owners who are showing or selling horses. You can add fat to your stallion’s diet through supplements or through feeding a concentrate with a high (>10%) fat level. I generally recommend against adding just an oil – corn oil, soybean oil, whatever type. Simply adding oil adds calories, but they are empty calories – you need to provide additional nutrition to support the increased energy demands in the horse. Look for a supplement that is high in fat, but also adds anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E. You also want to look for a supplement with balanced Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids – a good ratio to look for is 1:5 respectively. A couple of side notes, there is a period of adjustment of about three to four weeks for horses to receive benefits from added fat so be patient and as with all changes in diet, this should be done gradually over seven to10 days to avoid the possibility of digestive upsets. If all of this is too much for you to add to your busy breeding season try taking the work (and guess work) out by feeding a commercial feed. 5) Feed a well-balanced concentrate and the best hay possible: There are plenty of examples of rather common feeding practices that fail to meet a horse’s requirements by either providing deficient amounts of some nutrients, excesses of others, or both. So taking the guess work out with a commercial grain concentrate that has

Selenium is another example of the importance of a balanced diet for your stallion. Research has shown that this nutrient is important in sperm motility and structure. Link (http://www.thehorse.com/ articles/26240/researchers-seleniums-value-is-in-the-sperm-not-theblood) A final example of the importance of a balanced diet is the calcium/ phosphorus ration. The total diet should contain at least as much calcium as phosphorous. Stallions require 1.2 grams calcium and .87 grams phosphorus per megacalorie of digestible energy. Single grains contain more phosphorous than calcium and this inverted ratio often remains uncorrected, depending on the type, amount and quality of hay a horse receives. To be adequate, concentrate feeds should contain at least .45% calcium and .35% phosphorus. For a stallion I’m a big fan of beet pulp based formulated commercial feed (high fiber) with added fat (>10%) and a high protein (>14%). In summary, stallions need to gain weight to enter breeding season with a higher than normal BCS. Active stallions may benefit from a diet of high quality fiber/forage, higher protein, and concentrates containing supplemental fat. This diet when introduced gradually and fed regularly will contribute to a stallion’s looks, behavior and performance in the breeding shed.

Growing up I use to watch my Mom and Aunt sew my Ice Skating costumes as I was a competitive Figure Skater. Simply from observing them for all those competitive years I taught myself to sew. I had a dog that was very sick during the winter, and we couldn’t find a coat of quality let alone large enough to fit him. My Rottweiler-Shepherd “Chase” had been shaved for surgery and hated going outside in the wet, freezing snow, as he was fighting an aggressive blood cancer. I tried large sweatshirts to cover him, but it didn’t work well as Chase would still end up wet from the rain or snow. He passed away before I could come up with a solution. With the combined measurements of “Chase” as well as my Saint Bernard “Madison” who also passed away, I just sketched out a pattern and created the coat. I realized that there really wasn’t anything on the market for the very large breed, let alone something of quality that would last throughout the seasons. It really became a concern when my large breed dogs were getting older and suffering from different diseases or ailments. I wanted to bring comfort to the ailing large breed dog, who we just assume because of their size or long hair they don’t require the protection from the elements or to keep dry. Madison suffered from nerve damage that rendered her back legs lame, so I would have to walk Madison’s back legs for her in the elements…regardless, if it was spring and just raining or during a harsh Michigan snow storm, she also suffered from arthritis and as humans we can’t stand to be cold or wet while we are feeling under the weather and I am sure it’s just as uncomfortable to our family pets who are aging. I called it The Chase Coat . An embroidered patch even bears Chase’s image. The outer layer is neoprene which is used for scuba diving, so the rain/snow literally just runs off the coat without it penetrating the material keeping the animal dry, as well as the material allows the body temperature of the animal to adjust naturally in any weather condition be it spring/fall rain or winter snow/sleet season. I wanted to utilize a very unique/durable material in making the coat and because of the material that I used it is more expensive than your run of the mill paper thin dog coat. The inner layer is a soft, plush Polartec which is often used as a lining in sturdy, warm winter coats for humans. The

www.theplaidhorse.com

coat can be easily slipped over the dog’s head, as the velcro on either side of the coat holds the coat in place at the chest. The coat has two soft straps with velcro and the two straps wrap underneath the dog just at the base of the ribs. I had also stumbled into starting to make the coat for the smaller breed. I had heard that Wendy Diamond’s (the founder and editor of Animal Fair magazine in New York) pet, which was a Maltese named Lucky, was diagnosed with a similar cancer that had taken “Chase”. I felt compelled to downsize the pattern, customize the coat to fit Lucky and ship the coat off to Wendy for Lucky to enjoy. I was unable to get the coat concept completed in time for Chase but, in some small way I felt that I had made it up to Chase through Lucky and I hope that I brought some comfort to her. Since that time, I now completely customize the coat for our clients to their pet’s specified size/breed. The home shopping network had made inquiries about our family start-up business when it launched. As well as, The Chase Coat was an Editor’s pick in the October, 2011 issue of Pet Product News/ Pet Product Style. A Hollywood swag event had even including The Chase Coat in goodie bags for the yearly Hollywoof event for animal-loving A-listers. Our coats can now be found in the homes of people like Alicia Silverstone, Miley Cyrus, Betty White, Charlize Theron, Kellan Lutz, Cesar Milan, Rachael Ray, Oprah Winfrey, Kathy Griffin, Katherine Heigl, Denise Richards, Kelly Osbourne, and Chelsea Handler…as well as we gave gift certificates to Tori Spelling, Kristin Bell, Paris Hilton, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Blake Lively, Katherine McPhee, Mario Lopez, Fergie, Olivia Wilde, Justin Timberlake and Jai Rodriguez.

Goober, a pit-bull mix, was scheduled for euthanasia before being rescued by New Leash. Goober went on to graduate from New Leash’s fifth class at the Philadelphia Prison Systems after undergoing excellent training by the inmates who participated in the program. Goober was an instant favorite among the inmates in the prison system, where he excelled and passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors. At the end of the program, a family with a member that suffers from recurring strokes adopted Goober. Before the adoption, this family believed that they would never be able to own a dog again because of the changes they all had to undergo in their everyday lives. Goober’s prison training and excellent behavior made it possible for this loving family to adopt him into their home. Because New Leash offered this dog a second chance at a new life, Goober was able to go on to improve the life of a family that needed him. Many of the dogs that have gone through this program have gone on to live with owners who struggle with physical and mental disabilities, such as autism, depression and PTSD. New Leash believes that everyone deserves a second chance, which is why they work so hard at providing for inmates and dogs to help them reach their full potential. photo by Jack McMahon III

New Leash on Life USA (New Leash) is a non-profit prison dog-training program that gives second chances to both dogs and inmates in an attempt to guide both to better lives. With the help of New Leash staff, volunteers, and prison inmates from local and state prisons, at-risk dogs are rescued from kill shelters and transformed into adoptable, well-trained pets. These dogs either go on to live with families who accept them with open arms or are trained to become well-behaved, skilled service dogs. By rescuing these dogs from kill shelters where they are in danger of euthanasia and placing them with prison inmates who train and socialize them, New Leash enhances their adoptability, thus giving them an excellent chance at being placed in a loving home. These rescued dogs live with their inmate trainers 24/7 where the dogs and the inmates can offer each other the attention, love, and support that most of them need. During this time, the inmates prepare the dogs they work with for their AKC Canine Good Citizen tests by teaching them the basic commands they need to know such as sit, stay, come, heel, and more. The inmates that train these dogs attend workshops on life skills such as applying for and working at a job. They also learn how to care for and treat dogs and other animals with respect. By taking these classes, the inmates increase their own confidence, build skills, and work toward future employment opportunities. By focusing on and learning these skills in prison, the inmates work to Pavlov is a three-year-old, 50 lb Pit Bull Terrier Mix that was trained at receive internships with animal related organizations when the Philadelphia Prison Systems with New Leash on Life USA. they are paroled. Buddy’s Tail... I think I am the luckiest horse ever! I basically hang out in a big pasture with my two friends...I eat all day... ANDDDDDD I inherited Buddy’s treats! Now Buddy was something I’m never going to be. He was a special, kind and gentle soul...me...not so much. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not a bad guy...but I’m not Buddy. Buddy was special. If you squinted just right when you looked at him, I swear he had angel wings. He was that kind of special. Me...I’m more like that plumber guy with the heartburn commercial... a regular guy. I am what I am...nothing more and nothing less. I do appreciate good things in life though and I TOTALLY know a good thing when I sniff it!! A box came the other day. It smelled awesome. It was treats for me and my equine pals from Buddy’s best friends ever at The Treat Barn!!! Now I know we aren’t Buddy. We haven’t been through all he did- we aren’t as sweet as he was...but we can party!!!! This

Lynn’s Animal Rescue ~A Labor of Love ~ 856-979-4564

box we got was a party all for us!!! Jenny at The Treat Barn knows the way to my heart , thats for sure!!!! She makes the all time best treats. They aren’t just made of good stuff- they also smell good- they look good and THEY ARE GOOD!!!! And...her secret ingredient is LOVE. Her treats are made with love. If I was ever going to get married- I’d marry Jenny!! Now truth be told- these treats were for me to share with Dylan and Wilbur...and I did share (though reluctantly)... but I thought of keeping them all to myself. Check out treatbarn.com for some of the best treats ever! You will know the real thing when you taste it! On a side note- let’s talk about the superbowl. Ok...I know nothing- nor care at all about the Superbowlbut I DID want to see Thunder the Broncos mascot. That didn’t happen. I was VERY disappointed. The Budweiser commercial helped make me feel better... but that didnt totally do it either. For me- it’s Opening Day I’m waiting for! Buddy always was excited about it and I am too. Its sooo cool to be waiting for a new year- a new team- a new chance!!! Imagine how boring baseball would be if your team played all year!!! Hmmm...wait...that’s what happened to horse shows! Something to think about, isnt it?? If you have an opinion to share- feel free to shoot me an email! Theplaidhorse@aol.com and put Hank in the subject line. Doubt anyone will...takes time to care...time is hard to come by...but if you do...I WILL respond...all opinions count! Until next time...eat and enjoy life...it’s too short not to!

5 Healthy Snacks that are Easy to Pack for the Show With our busy horse show schedules and the limited foods available at the shows, choosing a healthy and energizing snack can be a challenge. Packaged foods and sweets tend to be the most convenient items to toss in our tack trunk or grab quickly at the concession stand. However, with just a little planning, you can select easy snacks that will help you stay on track with your healthy diet, and give you the energy you need to ride your best: Veggies and Fruit: This choice is simple to transport and they’re packed with the nutrients your body needs. Share some carrots with your horse or a few slices of fruit with other riders. Easy to pack raw fruits and veggies will give you some added energy without weighing you down. A handful of dried fruit can also give an athlete a quick energy burst (but don’t overdo it because you will eat too much sugar very quickly). Remember, the natural sugars found in whole foods are recognized by your body and can be used as fuel, but be sure to avoid added sugars and syrups, as well as preservatives that are often found in pre-sliced fruit and veggie snacks. Suggestions: Carrots, Celery, Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Apples, Oranges, Berries Tip: Try adding a few more veggies to every meal you have too! Nuts/Seeds and Nut Butters: These little powerhouse snacks can give you a healthy serving of the proteins and fats that your body desires. Look for raw nuts and nut butters without added trans fats, preservatives, sugars or flavorings. Stocking up on your favorite nuts in the bulk section of the grocery store before the show is a great way to ensure you’ll have a healthy snack to grab – and remember to only grab one handful (portion size matters!).

Suggestions: Almonds, Walnuts, Brazil, Hazelnuts, Pecans, Macadamia, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds... Peanuts are not actually nuts and can sometimes be moldy causing sensitivities. Tip: Spread nut butters on your veggies and fruits!

Deli Meats and Canned Fish: While you may need a cooler to keep food at safe temperatures, deli meats without nitrates/nitrites are a fast and convenient protein rich boost. Canned tuna and salmon are also good choices and can be easily found in single serving sizes. Protein is a great for supporting and building up all of the muscles you use while riding! Suggestions: Applegate Farms, Trader Joes, Wild Planet canned fish. Tip: Wrap some avocado or guacamole inside your deli meats or use a lettuce leaf as a wrap. Eggs: Whether you make hardboiled eggs or buy a bag of quality hardboiled eggs, these little snacks are loaded with protein, healthy fats, and nutrients that support optimal health. They help you feel full, but not stuffed like having a full meal, so you can still feel comfortable riding. Also consider switching to scrambled eggs (maybe with someveggies) instead of the morning sugar-bomb muffin when you go to the vendor stands. Suggestions: Pastured Eggs from your local market when possible. Pre-hardboiled eggs at Trader Joes. Tip: Hardboiled eggs are also good on salads with some extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

www.theplaidhorse.com

Bars and Shakes: Watch out for a sugar overload! While whole foods may be the best option, bars and shakes can be a practical solution for a easy snacks or meal replacement when you are at a busy show. Look for pure ingredients (ones that you can pronounce), and watch out that you don’t get sucked into the marketing claims on the front of the packaging. Also, pay attention to how you feel after eating – this is usually the best way to judge if a particular food works for your individual body and gives you the energy you need. Suggestions: Lara Bars, Goodonya Bars, Amazing Meal, Thorne shakes, Sun Warrior Tip: Get a BPA-free shaker bottle for at the shows; add veggies if you have a blender. Before you hit the road for your next show, make a plan to bring some of your own snacks. This will help you avoid the energy-zapping sweets and it will give you more healthy options that will nourish your body and give you the energy you need to ride!

Not to date myself but I grew up riding Thoroughbreds. The Warmblood had not yet invaded the hunter/jumper scene. Everyone rode Thoroughbreds, the majority of them were race track rejects. Growing up in western New York, the Finger Lakes Racetrack was a great source for next year’s First Year Green Hunters. This was before Pregreen division was established. Horsemen would collect young prospects and spend the winter training them. They went to schooling shows to prepare them for their new life untill they were ready to “bring” them out. The Jumper market first started importing warmbloods. It was many years before competing warmbloods as Hunters and Equitation mounts became accepted, much less the norm. Warmbloods were called “aliens”, now that title has been given the Thoroughbred. Sad. The theory that Warmbloods are quiet, not spooky and easier to train and that every Thoroughbred is hot is hogwash!!!!

Terry West and High View

The Thoroughbred has the classic look of a hunter from all the old artwork I have viewed. Warmbloods are now bred to have a hunter “look” with more refinement than the carthorse they originated from. I’ve never heard a TB referred to as a “Jughead” or “Dumblood”. Kudos to those who have started the TB divisions!!! Help those guys beat a bad rap. My heart has a special place for them. Bottom line, a good horse is a good horse. Russell Frey has coached students to ribbons in the Equitation Finals, and trained and shown many successful hunters. His championships are numerous including the Winter Equestrian Festival, Lake Placid, Upperville, Kentucky, Capital Challenge and the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. Russell’s judging venues include the Winter Equestrian Festival, Ocala, Detroit, Kentucky and the Devon Horse Show.

Eventing Legend James Wofford Impressed by Stars of the Thoroughbred Makeover The stars shone brightly last weekend in Timonium, Maryland as the “Stars of the Thoroughbred Makeover” took center stage in the main arena at the hugely popular Maryland Horse World Expo in Timonium. Three of the 26 horses featured in last fall’s Retired Racehorse Training Project (RRTP) Thoroughbred Makeover performed under the critical eye of Olympian and eventing legend James Wofford. “What impresses me the most about all three of these horses is how rideable they are in this difficult environment after only a few months of training,” said Wofford in his commentary. “All three of these young ladies are to be commended for quietly instilling the basic education that these horses need to become valuable partners in any discipline.” Thane was shown at the Thoroughbred Makeover by Nuno Santos, but appeared on Saturday carrying his new owner, 15-year-old Sara Sopher, under the coaching of Santos. This coming-four-year-old by Medaglia d’Oro out of an AP Indy mare never really put a foot wrong. “He is one of many horses that I have acquired from Darley USA, and all of them are very trainable,” said Santos. Wofford praised the horse for his natural talent and the rider and her coach for the correctness of their approach, giving them the award for “Best Dressage Training.” Next to perform were Governor Jack and his trainer and rider Elissa Ogburn ( 14). This big bay eight year old by Sky Mesa won over $1000,000 racing and came to Elissa through MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. They performed good basic flatwork and demonstrated a quiet, workmanlike form over jumps. Wofford proclaimed them the partnership with the “Best Attitude”. The youngest trainer from the Makeover, Amber Longreen (13) also jumped flawlessly and with some real talent. She acquired Same As Always after only a few racing starts through New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program’s Pennsylvania facility, which is run by her mother at Bowcrest Farm. Wofford liked the horse’s style over jumps and proclaimed the pair “Best Over Fences.” Each rider received a $250 certificate to spend at Bit of Britain, donated generously by Thoroughbred advocate and owner John Nunn. RRTP also presented the popular “Training Scale for Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses,” and “Selecting and Starting Your Thoroughbred Off The Track,” with Steuart Pittman as clinician. “Horse expos are fantastic venues for reaching the future market for these magnificent horses,” said RRTP President Steuart Pittman. “Maryland Horse World Expo in particular draws a huge audience of people who are eager to learn.” Full video of the Saturday session can be found on RRTP’s website at www.retiredracehorsetraining.org.
