What makes a home in National Village so special is the sum of the parts of National Village. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National, the pool and spa, the lake, the hiking trails, the dining, the friendship, and of course Auburn Football. Perhaps the saying is true, the whole is equal to the sum of its parts.

OM freshmen pose ‘dynamic’ threat By CHRISTIAN CLEMENTE Sports Writer
Following a loss to LSU, Auburn is preparing to face a young Ole Miss team that currently has 49 newcomers on the roster. The freshmen have had a big impact on the team so far. Currently, 84.5 % of Ole Miss’ offense has come from freshmen, the most by any team in the country. Thus far, Ole Miss has started Matt Corral and John Rhys Plumlee at quarterback, Corral being a redshirt freshman and Plumlee being a true freshman. While neither quarterback has been overly effective in the passing game, Plumlee has been a dynamic threat rushing for 508 yards on 86 attempts (5.9 yards per carry). Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn noted Plumlee as a guy to look out for going into the
matchup. “He’s dynamic with the ball in his hands and he’s had a lot of explosive runs,” Malzahn said. “I think up until last week he was one of the top rushers in our league, from a quarterback standpoint and he’s rotating with another guy so I think that really says everything you need to say.” Along with the young quarterbacks, true freshman running back Jerrion Ealy has been a playmaker, not only out of the backfield but as a kick returner. Ealy set a Rebel freshman record during the Texas A&M game with 273 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns and also leads the SEC in kickoffs returned for a touchdown. Ealy left the Texas A&M game with a concussion but has been cleared from concussion protocol and is a full-go for the game this weekend. At wide receiver the Rebels
have seen an increasing role for true freshman Jonathon Mingo. Mingo has started every game this season, totaling nine receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Like most things, there are disadvantages as well as advantages to having such a young team. One of the tougher parts of having a young team comes from trying to make sure the freshmen are ready and won’t be confused by different looks. “You’re worried about our own youth and confusing us,” Ole Miss offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez said Monday. “The last thing you want to do for our guys is have some indecision or some confusion up front and all of a sudden now we can’t execute.” The Rebels will look for their freshmen to continue to » See FRESHMEN, 7

Defense ready for ‘explosive’ rushing attack

When Auburn hosts Ole Miss Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Rebels will arrive with the second-best rushing offense in the SEC. Its rushing attack has been averaging 232.5 yards per game on the ground and has rushed for an SEC-best 1,383 yards and 11 touchdowns in conference play this season. “Offensively, they’re second in our league in rushing, a lot of explosive runs, a whole lot,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said at his Tuesday press conference. Not only do the Rebels have the second-best rushing offense in the SEC, Ole Miss also leads the nation in explosive runs of 30 yards or more with 14 of them.
Auburn’s defense is no stranger to facing teams that like to run the ball this season. They have faced two teams this season that featured the SEC’s leading rusher going into the game against Auburn, in Rakeem Boyd and Kylin Hill for Arkansas and Mississippi State respectively. Those two combined for 30 carries against Auburn for 84 yards. Ole Miss has no lead running back, however. The Rebels use a committee approach in establishing the run. Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten knows that stopping the run is extremely important this week, just like it is every week. “They present a lot of different problems defensively,” Wooten said. “The way they run the ball, good receivers outside, just the way they run the ball. That’s going to be a

play a big role against Auburn, a defense Rodriguez says might be one of the most impressive in the past several years. While it can be tough to play a young team, this also allows the Rebels to grow and develop very early on. “It’s a very, very talented class,” Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke said earlier in the season. “That’s the exciting part you want to build on, because these guys are only going to continue to get better. You know the future is
big point of emphasis this week you know trying to stop the run. That’s an emphasis every week trying to stop the run as best as we can, that’s going to be a big key this week.” The Rebels’ committee approach not only involves running backs Scottie Phillips and Jerrion Ealy, but also true freshman quarterback John Rhys Plumlee. Plumlee’s 508 rushing yards on the season are an Ole Miss program record. Ole Miss offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez’s system uses a two-quarterback system and has since the Missouri game earlier in the year. Plumlee and redshirt freshman Matt Corral have been alternating snaps, with the true freshman primarily being used in running situations and Corral
bright, you know we’re coming.” Rodriguez echoed a similar statement to Luke. “If you’re watching the film you’re like, OK, there’s a true freshman at left tackle, there’s a true freshman at running back, a true freshman at quarterback, two or three at wideout, he said. “It’s invaluable experience for sure.” Getting younger players in early has also proved invaluable for Luke and the rest of the Ole Miss recruiting staff. “I think people see that,” Luke said. “You don’t have to pitch it, they all see it, so I think that’s good. Anybody you talk to, you don’t even have to say it. They already
more in passing situations. Plumlee leads all SEC quarterbacks in rushing yards this season but left the Texas A&M game early with a knee injury. He is, however, expected to play against Auburn this weekend. Malzahn has been impressed with what he’s seen from Plumlee this season. Malzahn attempted to recruit Plumlee last year when he took an official visit. “Well he’s dynamic with the ball in his hands and he’s had a lot of explosive runs,” Malzahn said. “I think up until last week he was one of the top rushers in our league from a quarterback’s standpoint.” No. 11 Auburn (6-2, 3-2 in SEC) hosts Ole Miss (3-5, 2-3 in SEC) this Saturday at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN.
say it, ‘Man, you guys are young. Y’all are young. Y’all are right there.’ Everybody sees it and I think we’ve just got to build on it and find a way to get over that hump.” No. 11 Auburn (6-2, 3-2 SEC) leads the all-time series 32-10 and is 15-3 when playing in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers have won three straight iin the series, outscoring the Rebels 115-68 (38.3-22.7 ppg). Eleven of the last 15 games in the series have been decided by double digits; Auburn has a 9-2 record in those games. Prior to those games, the previous five games were decided by eight points or fewer. Auburn and Ole Miss (3-5, 2-3 SEC) will kick off at 6 p.m. CST from Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn running game looking to attack Ole Miss By HARRISON TARR Sports Writer
Since Gus Malzahn took the reins as head coach of the Auburn Tigers in 2013, the program has placed a heavy emphasis upon running the football. Malzahn has had a slew of talented running backs throughout his tenure at Auburn, such as Kerryon Johnson and Tre Mason, who found ways to rack up yardage against any and all SEC opponents. However, the coach has had his greatest success on the ground against his team’s next opponent: the Ole Miss Rebels. Dating back to his days as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, Auburn has had first-team running backs average 164.4 rushing yards on the ground against the Rebels’ defense. The run game against Ole Miss, Malzahn said Tuesday, will once again be an emphasis. “We’re a run, play action team, we need to be effective running the football and need to continue that streak,” he said. The play-caller noted that Auburn will be without lead back JaTarvious Whitlow in this year’s game, despite getting carries last weekend at LSU. Malzahn said Whitlow will only be
able to play in a limited role, so there will be a large rotation of backs, led by true freshman D.J. Williams, who ran for a season-high 131 yards in Death Valley. Despite Whitlow’s limited availability, Malzahn did add that he will likely see the field situationally. “Boobee (Whitlow) is still not 100 percent, and won’t be 100% this week ...We’ll see how practice goes and we’ll have a good plan,” Malzahn said. While the ground game will likely be the heart of the offense, yards may be more difficult to come by in this year’s matchup than last year. The Rebels returned eight starters from last season and are not taking the Tigers’ run game lightly. When asked about how he is preparing his defense for the challenge, third-year Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke spoke highly of the Auburn rushing attack they are preparing to face. “They have a really good mixture of power run game and speed sweeps ...You have to be able to defend the perimeter,” Luke said. No. 11 Auburn, which is a n18.5point favorite, will host Ole Miss this Saturday at Jordan-Hare stadium at 6 p.m. CST. Auburn’s first home game since September will be televised on ESPN.
