Experience outside the classroom vital to success Becky Hardy editor@theplainsman. com

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Sorry to throw in a cliché, but that is exactly how to describe my time as editor of The Plainsman. I’ve had to handle covering the shooting of an Auburn freshman at 6 a.m. during the first week of winter break, had my hard work stolen from the racks while hitting numerous freedom of information roadblocks with the University and even broke down a few times because this job is can be rough. But not just my time as editor, but all four years working at this award-winning newspaper have been the most rewarding and inspiring times of my life.

Staying up until 2 a.m. in the office to finish designing and editing pages with my closest friends would be the highlight of some of my weeks. Covering President Barack Obama’s speech about civil rights in Selma right in front of me was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I owe almost all of my great memories to my fellow staff members and The Plainsman in general. I’ve learned more about working in the journalism field through The Plainsman than I have in my journalism classes. Yes, classes helped me learn the basics, but The Plainsman helped me develop those skills and find my place as a journalist. Journalism students, I write this for you. Get as much experience as you possibly can outside the classroom. The School of Communication and Journalism isn’t going to teach you how to interact with a difficult person you’re interviewing. It’s not going to give you the chance to cover an in-depth investigative

piece on what’s wrong with systems on campus. And it’s not going to give you real-world journalism experience. Get involved and use student media as an invaluable resource. One of my top goals as editor was to get The Plainsman a new website, and I cannot be prouder of how it has come to fruition. The Plainsman staff was doing great reporting and multimedia before the new website. Now the staff has the chance to transform and evolve with the changing journalistic landscape. I hope everyone who ever works for The Plainsman earns the jobs they deserve after graduation and continue to impress the world. And I hope the students, faculty, staff and community members of Auburn continue to go to The Plainsman for all Auburn news. We’re here for you; to show people the truth, to show people what matters and to expose people to parts of the community they’ve never seen before.

It would be impossible for me to describe how much my time at The Plainsman has changed me for the better, so I’ll just leave everyone with this. Never be afraid to tackle something that terrifies you. Whether that is moving across the country away from your family and friends for an awesome job, standing up for what is right, even though there will be consequences to deal with or writing an article that may take time, but when published will start some much-needed change. Auburn has been a great place for me to grow and become who I am and want to be, but it’s time to move on. NFL executive chosen as keynote speaker Kailey Miller

As the class of 2015 reaches the end of their educational journey, words of wisdom from someone who has taken the steps they are about to take are priceless. Michelle McKenna-Doyle, senior vice president and chief information officer of the NFL, has been chosen as this year’s graduation speaker. “She is just a dynamic speaker,” said Teresa Whitman-McCall, director of Campus and Community Events. “She’s very accomplished. She’s currently the highest-ranking female executive for the NFL.” McKenna-Doyle graduated from Auburn with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1987. She completed her master’s de-

gree in business administration from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College. “We’re not required to always use an Auburn alum, but we do happen to have such a great, vast pool of just dynamic alumni that we usually will choose someone that has a tie to Auburn in some way and someone who shows that they have accomplished quite a bit in their life, if it’s career or philanthropy or other opportunities,” Whitman-McCall said. “[It’s] just someone that we feel will be able to very much inspire our graduates.” McKenna-Doyle is responsible for the NFL’s technology strategy and shared service delivery. She also manages the league’s technology activities. When she is not busy being the

executive sponsor of the league’s Women’s Network (WIN), she is being honored with awards such as the Game Changer Award and being named one of the top 40 women in business by the 2013 Forty Over Forty — Women to Watch list. Mike Clardy, director of University Communications, said he met McKenna-Doyle in February when a group from his office went to New York to interview her for a story. “We were able to see kind of the command center for where the NFL ... watch the games from and then communicate back with the officials,” Clardy said. “She’s head of IT, so that was her area, and I enjoyed seeing her and interacting with the people she works with and just kind of seeing what the world is like. It’s a whole different environ-

ment than the average TV viewer is used to seeing on Sunday.” Clardy said McKenna-Doyle has been to Auburn to speak before, and she managed to give a message that related to the students and was inspirational to them. She discussed ways to get ahead in careers, how to open doors and how to take advantage of opportunities, according to Clardy. “It’s great to bring our alumni back to tell others how they got to where they are,” Clardy said. “I think that the graduates will get a lot out of it.” Whitman-McCall said McKenna-Doyle will speak at all of the graduation ceremonies, but that speakers usually adjust their speeches slightly to address each specific audience individually.

MCKENNA-DOYLE Whitman-McCall said they usually don’t know what the speaker will talk about until closer to the ceremony. “What we always ask them is to speak to the graduates as it pertains to what’s happening in the world today, what they look forward to when they get out of college, words of inspiration or wisdom that they can offer in succeeding in life, not only in their career, but in other opportunities,” Whitman-McCall said. “So far, all of our graduation speakers have always just done a fabulous job.”

Auburn graduates ready to volunteer for Peace Corps Andria Moore Intrigue writer

Studying abroad for a month or a semester can seem like a long time. Volunteering abroad for a year and a half can seem like forever to some. The Peace Corps was established in 1961 to help provide assistance to developing countries. Whether educational, medical or economical, Peace Corps volunteers have helped people build better lives, according to the organization’s website. Some Auburn students have decided to donate their time and join the Peace Corps. Jenna Platt, senior in agronomy, said her decision to join the Peace Corps was a challenging one, but one she is excited about. “I really want to work with food crisis issues and farmers in developing countries,” Platt said. “By doing

the Peace Corps, I get to have that experience of working in my field before going into my master’s and Ph.D. work.” Platt applied to the Peace Corps in August 2014 and was contacted in February, when she was asked for an interview. Platt has been preparing to leave for Senegal in west Africa. “The interview process isn’t what you expect,” Platt said. “It’s more about whether you can handle the experience.” Volunteers are allowed to pick their top three choices for countries they can be sent to. “Senegal was definitely my first choice,” Platt said. “I really liked the organization of the program and getting to work with the Senegalese government.” Volunteers in any country must first go through three months of

training in their new country before they are placed with a host family. While overseas, Platt will be primarily working with farmers and helping them modify and adapt more sustainable practices. “You are expected to represent the U.S. at all times,” Platt said. “But it’s a cultural exchange. You bring back to the U.S. what you are learning about.” Brandon McDonald graduated December 2014 with a certificate in

nonprofit. He left in April for Georgia, a country just below Russia. “I’m supposed to help families become financially stable so they can gain employment,” McDonald said. “I didn’t know anything about Georgia before this, but now I understand it’s similar to an eastern European country.” McDonald worked with nonprofit organizations through most of his college career, which he said is what fueled his desire to expand upon that with the Peace Corps. “My ultimate goal is to learn about nonprofit work so that I can eventually work for an LGBT nonprofit,” McDonald said. The hardest part for McDonald, he said, was the week leading up to his departure and having to say goodbye to everyone for the next 27 months. “It’s the hardest part,” McDonald

said. “It’s been very emotional these past couple of days.” Platt still has a couple months until she leaves, but she also said it has been hard to say goodbye. One of Platt’s closest friends, Elizabeth Nguyen, senior in biomedical sciences, said she is sad to see her friend leave, but also knows it will be a great experience for her. “She’s been wanting to do this for a long time,” Nguyen said. “I think it will be a great time for her to really find out about herself without the influences of family and friends.” Platt said although she is extremely nervous now, she knows the experience will be worth it. “I think it will help me gain a lot of perspective that we lose in college,” Platt said. “We get focused on college and career and forget what we are getting a degree for.”

Auburn helps graduates in job search Rebecca Oliver Campus Writer

After the spring graduates of Auburn University cross the stage with their diplomas in hand, many will begin their job search. According to Nancy Bernard, director of the Auburn University Career Center, Auburn prepares students for the workforce by providing students with opportunities to build their résumés by adding to their skill set. Bernard said internships are desirable with many employers because they show the student has experience in the professional world. Eric Vogt, senior in biosystems engineering, said Auburn is helpful in finding jobs and internships through their reputation with various industries. “The USDA has always welcomed Auburn students for research in biomass operations, and, in my humble opinion, Auburn has taught me all the necessary skills to be involved in the internship,” Vogt said. Vogt said his professors inform students of employment opportunities. “Many of my professors have helped me review and critique my résumé,” Vogt said.

According to Bernard, undergraduate research positons are among the diverse opportunities Auburn offers its students to gain experience in their field of study. Undergraduate research positons help students gain expertise in their field that trains them for their future jobs before graduation, according to Bernard. Rachel Pipan, Office of Undergraduate Research assistant and senior in public relations, said participating in an undergraduate research study shows students have gone the extra mile in college by pursuing a highly academic opportunity. According to Pipan, Auburn undergraduate research opportunities challenge students to become the problem solvers employers desire. “Undergraduate research encour-

ages students to think outside the box and go beyond the classroom building qualitative and quantitative data,” Pipan said. Pipan said undergraduate research is situated to help Auburn graduates excel. “Auburn gives us a love of knowledge and (makes) us more rounded individuals,” Pipan said. According to Pipan, undergraduate research programs are not limited to students in majors that are research-intensive, such as majors within the College of Sciences and Mathematics. “Going over statistics and doing content analysis is not unlike what other employers will ask of graduates in other fields,” Pipan said. Bernard said Auburn helps students become more experienced leaders through various involvement opportunities. “You don’t have to be SGA president to become actively involved,” Bernard said. “Auburn has a diverse set of opportunities for its students.” Bernard said the Auburn University Career Center has resources including career counselors, résumé critiquing and the Tiger Recruiting link to assist students in their job search.
