When a famous scientist is abducted, it takes his two children, their best friend, an incompetent storyteller, and YOU to rescue him.

Fun for wee ones! Classic nursery rhymes, Scottish children’s songs, a hamper of toys and shakey eggs for under-2s. For the 2-5s dress up, sing and strum with Gill at My Yellow Ukelele.

The Famous Five meets Scooby Doo meets The Crystal Maze in a unique hour of funny, scary and inventive interactive theatre. You won’t be sat in the dark watching a play...you’ll be at the heart of The Adventure!

This delightful new show stars popular CBeebies presenter Cerrie Burnell, in an original story inspired by her own childhood and featuring specially composed music. Libby dreams of becoming a ballerina like her mum before her. But when she’s told to wear a false arm for dancing lessons, Libby rebels, seeking escape in her favourite playroom. Suddenly, the toys magically come to life around her. Will Libby’s new friends be able to help her to become a famous ballerina? Ages 3+ Directed by Hal Chambers of Tucked In, creators of acclaimed fringe kids shows including The Golden Cowpat. www.MagicalPlayroom.com | www.FestivalHighlights.com | Facebook: MagicalPlayroom | Twitter: @MagicalPlayroom

It would be hard to find a children’s presenter more perfect than Burnell – she can sing and dance, she is beautiful, with a wide, open childlike face, and she radiates a rare goodness. GUARDIAN

Snuff Box Theatre, Richard Jordan Productions in association with The Pleasance. Part of the British Council Edinburgh 2013

The Pleasance in association with The Scotsman

Women will step into the Olympic boxing ring for the very first time. As Chloe trains for the fight of her life, she’s left winded by two life-changing events. In a man’s world, can she prove she’s still worth the title?

Pleasance Bytes in association with The Scotsman celebrate 40 years of the Fringe First awards with four rehearsed readings, one from each decade. This event is part of The Scotsman Fringe First Awards’ 40th anniversary, festival-wide celebrations. Join us as we revisit generation-defining shows. ALI J

THE PEARL

Ali is going to die. Blood on his hands. An obstinate passion. 24 hours to live. One final audience. But why would you care? After all, he is a Muslim. Direct from its sell-out India Premiere, Ali J is a powerful and urgent new play about the search for identity, the need for belonging, the uneasy position at the wrong end of inclusivity, and about being Muslim in today’s India.

When impoverished pearl-diver Kino finds the ‘pearl of the world’ he believes his family’s life will be transformed. Seduced by the pearl’s beauty and promise of riches, he’s blind to the danger of possessing something that everyone wants. A timeless fable about the allure of greed, the confines of class, and the transforming power of love. Dumbshow bring Steinbeck’s novel to life with trademark visual inventiveness and playful theatricality.

This urgent and vital new play exploring modern India is a remarkable achievement. I implore you to see it.  BBC RADIO

DOUBLE BOOKED

Andrew, Julie and Mark engage in a pivotal tryst in a riotous bodyswap comedy from hotly tipped Fringe First winner, DC Jackson.

“Bridget Jones meets TV’s Outnumbered in this funny, sharply written comedy.” ***** BBC Radio. Ruth Rich has troublesome teenagers, a dotty mother, a crush on a schoolmaster and a bitchy best friend. In order to save face she economises on the truth only to discover that others are hugging far bigger secrets. “A beautiful play acted in a beautiful manner by a superb actress .” Buxton Fringe Review.

HAPPY NEVER AFTER

SOMETHING FISHY

Jen and Neil are young, fun and moving in together, but when they find themselves making difficult decisions about their future they start to wonder; can they survive on love and laughs alone?

Never far from the flood of chaos created around her by family and friends, Fringe sell-out mother of teenagers, Ruth Rich, relates another hilarious and satirical tale of the unexpected. Forced by circumstance to accompany her son, his friend and his friend’s 34FF mother to Marrakesh, Ruth leaves her teenage daughter at home alone with dotty Gran worrying nearby. Barely twelve hours in, Ruth’s phone starts ringing ...

BORGES AND I

Entering an over-10s swimming gala at the age of 30, to defeat 11-year-old nemesis Veronica Barr, a signalman swims for his life. A tender story of love, loneliness, and verruca socks. Idiot Child tells playful, peculiar tales of beautiful failure. Somewhere between stand-up and theatre, combining movement, film, and engaging storytelling, always keeping the audience at its heart.

Fringe sell-out Idle Motion return with their Total Theatre Award Nominated production exploring the writing of Jorge Borges. By weaving his story with that of love found in a book group, the show reflects upon our relationship with reading. Using 450 books Idle Motion bring forth images of labyrinths, tigers and a universe of libraries. Integrating creative stagecraft, innovative projection and beautiful physicality, this is must see immersive theatre.

OUTSIDE ON THE STREET

THE RAIN THAT WASHES

1945: Sergeant Beckmann arrives home in Germany, utterly altered. Throw yourself into his world of darkly comic, grotesque characters. Written in just six days after escaping from a prisoner of war camp and walking 370 miles back to Hamburg, Wolfgang Borchert’s vivid interpretation of his own story shines a light on the aftermath of war. Winners of both the Charlie Hartill Special Reserve and the Scottish Daily Mail Commendation Prize, Invertigo’s production sees an all-male ensemble confront this challenging European drama, directed by Cheek by Jowl Associate Owen Horsley.

Instantly plunged into a young man’s compelling story of growing up in turbulent Zimbabwe, we live and breathe his extraordinary and dramatic journey from innocence to escape, finally returning to his homeland to witness Mugabe’s greatest betrayal... Inspired by a series of interviews between Zimbabwean Christopher Maphosa and writer Dave Carey, who first met at Chickenshed more than 12 years ago, ‘The Rain That Washes’ is a true story that is poignant, political and, most of all, personal. This beautifully realised one-man show effortlessly shifts between different times, places and characters and builds to an unforgettable climax.

THE BABYSITTER

The lives of two very different men fatefully reconnect in these intensely personal stories underpinned by circumstances in Northern Ireland’s recent past.

InDepth bring you an outrageous new family comedy with a lot of laughs and a big heart. Winner of 4 awards at the National Student Drama Festival: Festgoers Award, Sunday Times Playwrighting Award, Directors Guild Award and Commendation for Acting Ensemble.

THE GHOST HUNTER

PLAY FOR SEPTEMBER

‘Do you know what they are, ghost stories? They’re a place to put things you’re too scared to look at any more.’

September 2003. The start of a new term. Elle and Kay waste time after school: Unicorn or phoenix? Jump or drown? House or holiday? The game seems endless. But when wasting time leads to your teacher falling in love with you, they quickly discover how morals are not always clear cut, friendships are flimsy and loyalties can be as false as the man they call Sir. A candid and reflective piece of new writing exposing the dangers of growing up.

Theatre of the Damned

Lost Watch Theatre Company

Dick runs a ghost tour, and he’s got a great story to tell. It’s about a Ragged School in old York. About something terrible buried beneath the cobbles. It’s about the past. It’s about ghosts. And it’s about to catch up with him. www.theatreofthedamned.com | Facebook: theatreofthedamned Twitter: @Ghosthunterplay

TAKE TWO EVERY FOUR HOURS

Ring is a sound journey in complete darkness from David Rosenberg (Shunt), Glen Neath (Hannah Ringham’s Free Show), and Herald Angel winners Fuel. Wearing headphones that amplify every intimate detail, you are transported to another room very similar to the one you entered, but in this room you have been recognised. Seductive and unnerving, Ring places the audience at the heart of a thrilling attack on their own identity.

In a white washed world of terminal boredom, industrial disinfectant and bed baths, Freddy and James discover that their best placebo is each other and that friendship is stronger than any prescription medication. This heart warming and heart-wrenching story shows us an intimate snapshot of their lives on a seemingly quiet afternoon but one that changes their lives forever. Short listed for the NSDF Edinburgh Emerging Artists Award 2011.

SOCK PUPPET

THE LITTLE SOLDIERS

A haunted sock meets a desperate man and offers him the world: Murders follow. An absurd horror comedy play written and performed by John-Luke Roberts with a lamp, a tape player and at least a 50-50 chance of a real haunting.

In an old circus tent, two brothers fight to the death. As their absurd battle builds towards destruction, their entire existence unfolds before them. Primal emotions take hold, furious ambition drives them into an unknown world and an impossible dream looms ever closer. Inspired by the ancient tale of Cain and Abel, The Little Soldiers by acclaimed company Theatre Re combines spellbinding physical theatre and a sonic landscape created by live musical narrative to portray a timeless rivalry.

Stratford Festival (Canada), Richard Jordan Productions, Theaturtle in association with The Pleasance

Created and written by Alon Nashman and Paul Thompson. Directed by Paul Thompson. A “brilliant triumph” (Ottawa Citizen) Canada’s legendary Stratford Festival makes its Edinburgh debut with this critically-acclaimed major new play direct from its smash-hit Canadian World-Premiere. The remarkable true story of John Hirsch; a Hungarian refugee orphaned by war who finds a new home in the world of theatre, where fierce talent and uncompromising drive propel him to great heights but challenges his very existence. In a “gut-wrenching and emotionally charged…tour-de-force performance” (Beat Magazine), award-winning actor Alon Nashman brings Hirsch magically to life.

BELOW THE BELT

EACH OF US

On an isolated industrial compound in a distant land, three men trade lies and abuse as they vie for supremacy, friendship and escape in this absurd and darkly hilarious play about loneliness, power, and the pettiness of men at work. Starring Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee Mike Wozniak, Tom Golding (The Ministry of Curious Stuff, Anna & Katy) and Chortle Award nominee Graham Dickson (Austentatious).

Fringe favourite Ben Moor returns with a brand-new solo comedy about love, friendship and human connection for our uncertain times. Funny and romantic, cryptic and surreal, poetic and uplifting; in a chaotic world, populated by self-conscious bees, time travelling ghosts and corporate thwarts, a complicit businessman creates a social catastrophe of his own life. Whichever way his story goes, each of us has a part to play.

TRASH CUISINE

Devised by Belarus Free Theatre in co-production with the Young Vic with support from LIFT and The Pleasance

Welcome to the Capital Punishment Café! Our chef’s specials today include firing squad, hanging and lethal injection. Can I take your order? Internationally acclaimed and fearlessly inventive Belarus Free Theatre (2011 Fringe First winners “for innovation and outstanding new writing”, Minsk 2011: A Reply to Kathy Acker) return to the Edinburgh Festival with an arresting new production that explores issues surrounding the use of capital punishment in modern society. Banned from performing in their home country, Belarus Free Theatre serve up food, music, dance and Shakespeare as they share true stories from inmates, their families, executioners and human rights lawyers. This provocative and urgent show pierces the imagination with moments of the darkest humour as it challenges capital punishment in our contemporary world, where 95 countries still carry out the death penalty. www.belarusfreetheatre.com | Facebook: Belarus Free Theatre | Twitter: @BFreeTheatre

THE BEGINNING

THE BOY WHO KICKED PIGS

A flirtatious and seductive love letter to theatre, The Beginning takes place between a rehearsal and a performance, dreaming and being awake. A Midsummer Night’s Dream meets the music of Serge Gainsbourg in this mesmerising reflection on what it means to begin a career, a relationship or a show. ‘Michael Pinchbeck is a terrific theatremaker’ - Guardian. Selected for the British Council Edinburgh Showcase 2013. www.michaelpinchbeck.co.uk

From the mind of Dr Who’s Tom Baker and the twisted talents of Kill the Beast, comes a deliciously gruesome tale set in the drab and dreary time when teenagers had nothing better to do than plot mass destruction, poison their sisters and kick pigs.

THE THREE LIONS

Jenny Topper and Rosie Bowen for PBJ Management with The Pleasance

A Footballer, a Prince and a Prime Minister walk into a hotel room... When David Beckham, Prince William and David Cameron arrive in Zurich the night before England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup they believe they can woo Fifa and bring the beautiful game home. For whatever else is at stake this is more, much more, than a question of sport – this is about trying to keep the Great in Britain. But as precious minutes tick by, things start to go disastrously and deliciously wrong. William Gaminara’s hilarious new comedy offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of diplomacy in action – and reveals the true story behind our World Cup bid. Although probably best known as Professor Leo Dalton in SILENT WITNESS, William Gaminara is also a successful writer. Previous plays include GERMINAL (Paines Plough), BACK UP THE HEARSE AND LET THEM SNIFF THE FLOWERS and ACCORDING TO HOYLE (“an enthralling entertainment” (Time Out) , “A feisty, sharply entertaining comedy” (The Guardian) - both produced at Hampstead Theatre. And, for television, he has also written THE LAKES & episodes of THIS LIFE. This, his latest play, is an hilarious comedy, in the best traditions of YES, PRIME MINISTER & THE THICK OF IT. A world premiere, it is directed by Philip Wilson whose previous work includes NOISES OFF at Liverpool Playhouse and PRIVATE LIVES at Salisbury Playhouse.

MUCUS FACTORY

Martin O’Brien | Hix Productions | Escalator East To Edinburgh

Martin suffers from suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that causes breathing difficulties as the body produces excess mucus clogging up airways and lungs. A performance focussing on physical endurance around a durational physiotherapy session, a technique designed to clear the airways, and an artificial attempt to use mucus as a substance for vanity and pleasure. Discipline, abjection, monotony combine to consider the relationship between pain and medicine.

Dot Howard | Escalator East To Edinburgh

An absurd account of a performance career spent in abject fear of the audience. “Tonight Matthew I am going to be… making an entrance and heading straight for the exit”. Remarkable entrances, several attempts at anonymity and recreated disastrous onstage experiences. The self-doubt underlying a performer’s attempts to just make good art, revealed in a 60-minute retrospective of ‘performance anxieties’. Scrutiny is paramount (ever been to a lifedrawing class?...)

Alan Conway: failed businessman and unsuccessful homosexual decides his life might improve if he just tells people he’s awardwinning film director Stanley Kubrick. What could possibly go wrong? Frenetic, funny, absurd, stupid, unbelievable (and totally true) Kubrick³ delights in the complexities of a compulsive fantasist in this frenzied comic play.

Chris has lovingly repaired his family Triumph Herald Estate so he can drive it from his home in Colchester to Rome. Part investigation into his father’s time as a Polish soldier in the Italian Campaign and part muse on consumerism, this show brings together car mechanics, a road trip, classical civilisation and the fetishisation of possessions in a solo performance using old photos, new film and surprising mechanical objects.

BOREDOM

//BUZZCUT//

Hunt & Darton present a lively exploration into the highs and lows of being bored. Embrace, combat or simply acknowledge it, boredom is part of us. Expect new-moves, leggings and you-do-it bits. We are far from bored about this. We are excited. A live-art collaboration between Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton, pineapple-wearing creators of Hunt & Darton Cafe that took the Fringe by storm last year and winning Threeweeks Editors Award.

Hello! //BUZZCUT// returns for its second year of existence and also its second year at the Fringe. We are an artist-led organisation who seek to show a whole bunch of exceptional performance artists who really want to share their brilliant work! This year we are showing a range of outstanding Scottish based practitioners... it’s going to be great! Come and get involved! Love //BUZZCUT// xx

PAUL MERTON’S IMPRO CHUMS Mick Perrin Worldwide

Paul Merton, Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch, Suki Webster and Steve Steen return to the Fringe for their 10th consecutive year presenting Paul Merton’s Impro Chums. The collective improvisational experience embodied in the Chums is enough to stun an elephant. They flex their improvisational muscles to delight and entertain audiences in this country and abroad, and now they return to Edinburgh. They create a new show every day, based entirely on suggestions from the audience with their finely honed improvisational skills and an almost manic compulsion to show off, the Impro Chums create cascades of fantastic tumbling laughter. Start times: 8th - 11th 14:15, 12th - 17th 16:00

Every year they bring the house down…a testimony to their brilliance and consistency… you could see this every night and never tire of it  MIRROR. These are masters of their craft and there wasn’t a dull moment. Terrific fun MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS

ARTHUR SMITH ARTHUR SMITH SINGS LEONARD COHEN (VOLUME TOO) Just as Degas felt compelled to return to ballet dancers and David Attenborough to his gorillas, so Arthur Smith turns again to Leonard Cohen. In this new show Arthur chases death, silence, boredom and stirs in failure, love, yakult and how not to act when meeting a hero. The result is tuneful, sepulchral, poetic with pyroclastic surges of laughter.

ADAM KAY: HOW TO BE A BOGUS DOCTOR

The inept, accident prone Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society embark on staging an ambitious 1920’s murder mystery (Murder at Haversham Manor).

Bound & Gagged Comedy / Mandy Ward Artist Management

Chris, the head of the drama society has directed the piece and cast himself as the dynamic Inspector Carter. Desperate wannabe actress Sandra and the socially awkward Max struggle opposite each other as the romantic interest while hapless Dennis still can’t pronounce ‘façade’.

Want to be a doctor, but can’t be bothered with the inconvenience and expense of six years at medical school? Learn how to fob off, rip off and strip off members of the public. Adam Kay is a comedian (Amateur Transplants), comedy writer (BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, Channel 4, Radio 4), and - genuinely - a former doctor.

An hour of hilarious disaster ensues; but can the troupe get the production back on track before the curtain falls? www.mischieftheatre.co.uk | Facebook: MischiefTheatre | Twitter: @mischiefimpro

BIRTHDAY GIRLS: 2053

COLIN HOULT: CHARACTHORSE

The year is 2053. Sketch comedy has taken over the world. But it is a world divided. After years of conflict, two factions have emerged. Birthday Girls perform darkly surreal, character-driven sketches. But a rival group are ready to do battle. They are gunning for the sketch comedy crown ... and that means taking down Birthday Girls.

The master of character comedy returns with a sublimely original hour of comic shape-shifting and supreme silliness.

Mick Perrin Worldwide

James Grant Comedy and Supporting Wall

A brand new show of non-stop invention and razor-sharp performances by the Writers’ Guild Awardwinning star of Being Human (BBC3), Colin Hoult’s Carnival of Monsters (Radio4) & Life’s Too Short (BBC2).

Birthday Girls are a brand new comedy sketch trio, made up of Beattie Edmondson, Rose Johnson and Camille Ucan, former members of the critically acclaimed sketch group Lady Garden (BBC3’s Live at the Electric). Directed by Tom Parry (Pappy’s).

MAT RICARDO: SHOWMAN

Returning after three sell-out, five-star Fringes, the Chortle Award nominated sketch-storytellers present an epic sketch show set in a city full of superheroes. Enter a world of capes, crime and chaos as the Betas swoop into a mystery that beats you into a bloody pulp-fiction.

Winner of Best Speciality Act at the London Cabaret awards, and as seen on the Jonathan Ross Show, “The Derren Brown of Juggling” (LoveFringe) brings a show packed full of big laughs, serious skills and breathtaking spectacle. See displays of genuine danger, of understated dexterous elegance, of thrills, slapstick and razor-sharp wit, performed by a man at the top of his game.

Funnier than a speeding bullet, more charming than a locomotive, able to leap tall expectations with a single bound. Sketch comedy that asks: “Is there a hero inside You?” Definitely not, but come anyway.

RICHARD HERRING – WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

Sony Award Winner, Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee, and Star of Radio 4, Tom returns with an exquisite new show. Expect elegant flourishes of language, twisted logic and whimsical storytelling courtesy of one of the finest and most original comics in town. ‘Funny Bones’ Evening Standard.

After sorting out politics (Hitler Moustache), religion (Christ on a Bike), love (What is Love, Anyway?) and penises (Talking Cock) Herring’s tenth consecutive stand-up show tackles the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns (apart from Jesus and that canoe bloke).

JIMMY MCGHIE: DELUSIONS OF CANDOUR Avalon Promotions

Painfully brilliant, pathologically charming and frequently deluded Jimmy McGhie slinks back to Edinburgh after bunking last year. After performing to great acclaim all over the world from Mumbai to Melbourne, Jimmy returns to Edinburgh with more soulful and searingly honest stand-up. As everybody around him pops out babies and leaps up property ladders, Jimmy wanders aimlessly, looking at things and getting annoyed. Facebook: JimmyMcGhie

JAY FOREMAN: NO MORE COLOURS Ditto Productions

The multi-award-winning musical comedian returns to Edinburgh with his first brand new hour since supporting Dave Gorman’s 2011-2012 tour. As a child, Jay learnt that he will never discover a new colour, and it’s never stopped irritating him. Now he’s turned that chilling thought into masterfully crafted, melancholy, uplifting songs, poems and indescribable musical wizadry. As heard on BBC Radio 4Extra.

HUNT AND DARTON CAFE Prepare to be amazed and amused as ‘the UK’s leading comedy magician’ (Time Out) returns to Edinburgh with an astonishing new show.

POPAGANDA

Richard DeDomenici / Escalator East to Edinburgh

Star of BBC1’s ‘The Magicians’ and recently seen on BBC2’s ‘The Sarah Millican Television Programme’, ‘Channel 4’s Mash-Up Season’ and winner of BBC1’s ‘Celebrity Mastermind’.

Relax to the dulcet tones of Richard’s fake songs, topical pranks, silly games, and satirical mashups in his hit show about trying to change the world. A jetlagged litterpicker of the world’s cultural landfill, watch DeDomenici throw civilisation at the wall, caution to the wind, and see what sticks. Like a can of tomato soup Popaganda is condensed, easily digestible, and likely to stain.

22:20 (23:20) You could argue that by now it’s just demeaning for five men approaching their thirties to be donning gimp masks, prancing round in thongs and making knob gags. You’d be right. Despite that they’re back and this year they mean business. A blistering hour of fast-paced sketches, “big laughs” (Fest) and “gloriously bad taste” (Guardian) that cements their position as a “redoubtable force in sketch comedy” (Scotsman).

CASSETTEBOY VS DJ RUBBISH CKP in association with Coalition Talent

Cassetteboy’s hilarious YouTube videos have mashed up everyone from Alan Sugar to Harry Potter, and have been watched over 20 million times. Now they’ve teamed up with DJ Rubbish, freestyle rapper and Peckham’s biggest idiot, to create an unforgettable night out. Part comedy club, part disco, all party, it’s the only night in town that plays Madonna and MasterChef, 50 Cent and Jeremy Paxman, Rihanna and Jeremy Kyle. It’s the ideal end to a day at the Fringe, when you want to squeeze in a few more laughs, but your feet want to dance. Prizes! Drinks! Swearing! Stupidity! You’ll laugh, you’ll dance, you’ll go to the toilet (probably). Tweet your musical requests to @Cassetteboy (remember to tell us which night you’re coming). www.youtube.com/cassetteboy | Twitter: @Cassetteboy
