Development Office Update
On the cover: Past Marist High School Faculty and Teachers; 50 years of Marist Faculty and Staff.
Save the date on 9-9-9!!!!! Please join us at the Red and White Stadium at 9:00 a.m. on September 9, 2013 for the opening Mass of the Marist High School Fiftieth Anniversary. What a wonderful opportunity to join Cardinal George, former and current Marist Brothers, and lay faculty, teachers and staff, our parents, alumni and the Marist student body to celebrate the blessings of fifty years. Mark your calendar! Check our website www.marist.net to get last-minute details for parking and reception. Fifty years ago, there were over 700 Marist Brothers in the United States who joined thousands of other religious and priests in founding and running schools, hospitals, and other Catholic ministries. Today, a few men are responding to a smaller USA Marist Brothers or other ordained or vowed members of the Church; however, their commitment and service is still valuable and needed. We realize that the real work of carrying on the Marist legacy and mission of St. Marcellin Champagnat, “to make Jesus known and loved among young people, especially the least favored”, belongs to amazingly generous and committed lay people, as well as the Marist Brothers. Over the past fifty years, Marist High School has benefitted from dedicated parent leaders, administrators, staff members, and faculty. The collage on the front cover of The Point is a humble attempt to offer homage to the vast contributions and gifts of our Marist lay colleagues since 1963. It’s inconceivable to think of Marist without many of these great committed Catholic educational leaders who have been a part of, and still contribute to, the red and white standard since 1963. Marist boasts nearly 30 alumni who presently teach at Marist, and many more than the 30 who returned to Marist for more brief tenures and have moved on to be local, state, or national educators. Even beyond our faculty and staff, we are blessed with the invaluable support from the Mothers Club, Fathers Club, and now Parents Club members, who devote their time in ensuring the Marist Community has a variety of opportunities to get involved. Marist, like Chicago, is a devoted community of great families. Each Marist Family has its uniqueness; the entire ensemble is terrific, not only in these past fifty years, but also, “for time and eternity.”

Some of the hardest class years to stay in touch with are the ones right out of college, so Marist created the Associate Directory to target those specific class years. The group has class representatives from 1998 to 2008, and hopes to continue growing with members and class chairs. Through social gatherings, sports leagues, business networking events, and volunteering opportunities, the Associate Directory offers a variety of ways for alumni to reconnect with Marist. Money raised during these events will go toward current students in need at Marist High School. Laetare Honoree
The Marist Laetare Medal Mission: The Marist Laetare Medal is the highest and most prestigious award given to an associate of Marist High School. The Marist Laetare Medal (Laetare meaning rejoice) is presented to individuals committed to our faith and supportive of Marist High School, individuals who are role models within their community, devoted to their profession and dedicated to excellence in education. The Marist Laetare Medal will be awarded biannually to not more than seven individuals as selected by a committee and approved by the President and executive committee of the Board of Directors.
Brother Paul Forgues, fms
“
Religious life is a process of faith that must be lived one day at a time.”
Brother Paul Forgues lives by these words, on his faith journey which started 77 years ago in Maine. Growing up and attending parochial schools, Brother Paul’s family thought he would go into chemistry or science. However, he had an uncle who was a Marist Brother, and following in his uncle’s footsteps, he joined the Brothers in 1955.
9
In 1959, Brother graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Marist College, and went on to Catholic University of America, where he earned a Master of Science in Library Science. By 1965, Marist High School needed a new librarian, so Brother came to Chicago, where he started the library and the Audiovisual Department. Brother saw a lot of technology changes in the AV department, as media evolved from records, to reel-to-reel cassettes, to CDs and then to DVDs. Brother kept up with all the changes and organized all the hardware and software necessary for each new technological advance. For a time, Brother was the diving coach, and the photographer for the football team, and he remembers having to use a camera with a crank that sometimes needed to be heated up, between football quarters, during particularly cold weather. Today, Brother works taking care of kitchen duties, and does gardening and maintenance duties at Marist. He is also the artistic consultant to the President of Marist High School.
Summer 2013
Laetare Honoree
Brother Richard Grenier, fms Brother Richard Grenier, 70, is currently in his 45th year at Marist, and believes very strongly in the provided quotations.
“
Brother entered the Marist Brothers in 1965, which was the same year he earned his Bachelor’s in economics from Merrimack College in Massachusetts. In 1972, he earned his Master’s degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame.
“
Though he refers to the formation program to enter the Brotherhood as a bit of a “boot camp”, he believes strongly that “What you do is not what you are.” Furthermore, he believes that his love of economics is not as strong as his feeling that he wanted to devote his life to teaching in an atmosphere, context, and tradition that was devoted to a higher cause. For Brother Rich, Catholicity of a school is paramount.
What we do in life, echoes in Eternity.”
Reform is the true test of remorse.”
10
Brother Rich started teaching in 1966 at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in New York, but came to Marist in 1969, where he taught economics, history, religion, business, finance and accounting. Brother Rich also won accolades along the way. He won a national award in 1985 for introducing computer applications to an economics class, was cited in the Southtown Star for excellence in teaching, was selected in 2007 as the “Heart of the School” by the Marist staff, and received the Champagnat Educator award in 2010. Today Brother Rich handles traffic detail at Marist, and works as an administrative assistant, taking care of a variety of chores around the school. Brother would like to continue working at Marist for another 10 years, because he very much looks forward to working with the staff and students of the school.

“
I am grateful to God for my Marist vocation and for the opportunity to serve the Church in its education apostolate.”
Brother graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, where he earned a degree in History. After graduation, he entered the Marist Brothers novitiate at Tyngsboro, MA. After completing the two-year novitiate, he spent one year at Marist College working in the tailor shop, print shop, and taking education courses.
Brother Kevin was assigned to Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx in August of 1955, where he spent six years teaching Biology. While at the Mount, he earned a Masters Degree in History at Fordham University. Next, he spent five years at our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie.
11
Returning to Mount St. Michael in 1961, Brother served as Principal for six years. Then he was given the opportunity to attend Center Champagnat program in Rome. Returning to the USA, Brother Kevin was assigned to Marist High School in Chicago in 1973. He left in 1978 for four years to serve as an Assistant Principal at Mount St. Michael. Brother returned to Marist in 1982, where he spent the next 26 years. “Retire” is not a verb that serves Brother Kevin well, for he is currently the Directory of the Brothers’ Community and keeps busy helping to care for the large house. Brother also works with the SPRED Program at St. Terence Parish in Alsip. SPRED is a religious education program for the developmentally challenged.

6 Decades of Marist Reflections
In my Senior year Religion class, Br. Leo Vincent quote, “Life is what you make of it, don’t be stingy, grasp all that you can.” I really liked him, he was a great teacher. I remember the first day of class seeing Br. Pius looking down on us from the second floor window as we walked into school for the first time. I always wondered what he was thinking.
12
I have enjoyed the friendships forged through my four years at Marist as probably the highlight of my high school experience. While working on our 40th reunion for the Class of 1972, I realized how many good men came out of our class. I’m proud to be a part of such a group. I am especially glad to see that so many young women now are able to receive the strong support of the Marist Brothers, both in educational endeavors and also in today’s societal matters. A solid Christian background is offered to all students and in today’s changing world this remains so valuable to young people. Wayne Szabla ‘72
My decision to attend Marist was one of the most important choices I ever made. The academics, athletics, students, and faculty are all outstanding at Marist, but it is the lifelong friendships that are most special. My best friends today go back to my time at Marist – that is what I will always remember.

Being asked to reflect on my time at Marist has made me realize that my experience can’t begin to be summed up by recalling specific football games, pep rallies, dances, retreats, classes, counselors, teachers, and fellow students. Those stories would only paint a small portion of what would be a beautiful, and still growing mural, because my Marist experience was about so much more than those things. It was, and is still all about this amazing Marist community. The stories, traditions, brothers, teachers and values that are shared across families, classes, eras and generations. The Point
Why I Give to Marist
Frank Harmon ‘89
Kate Grunauer ‘06 I give back to Marist because
As a student at Marist,
I received a very good education. This is a testament to the quality of Marist High School’s academic program, but that is only one aspect of the education I received. Through interactions with members of the entire Marist community, I was able to mature into a young adult who was prepared for college, both academically and as a human being. After graduation from Marquette University, I explored a variety of career options (mostly by process of elimination) in an attempt to find one I enjoyed and at which I could be successful. I eventually found my way to the asset management industry. As a result of hard work, good fortune and tenacity, it has worked out very well. It’s a given that you have to have a solid education to be
competitive in today’s work force. However, to be truly happy and successful, you need more than a strong academic background. What differen tiates Marist is their ability to help students learn, grow and develop spiritually, morally and physically; not just academically. Because of this holistic approach to student development, Marist graduates are at a competitive advantage. Stated simply, Marist alumni are better prepared to do more, achieve more and ultimately make a greater contribution to society. Much of who I am today is a result of my Marist experience. I am truly grateful for the education, guidance (and occasional reprimand) that I received from the faculty and administration. They cared about both my education and development. They gave me the foundation and skills to be a good person, husband and father. I support Marist because they help young adults grow into wellrounded, educated and thoughtful individuals who look for opportunities to help others. This is an expensive, labor-intensive and time-consuming process. I strongly encourage you to support our alma matter so they can continue to graduate alma mater of this caliber.
of the overwhelming support and sense of pride the entire Marist staff instilled in me as a student-athlete. Having the honor to be a part of the “1st Class” of young women to attend a formerly all young men Catholic high school was an experi ence of a lifetime. Every day was new and exciting. Marist prepared me academically and athletically for my future, and I am proud to represent the Marist community. I am currently in my 4th season coaching with the girls’ basketball program at Marist, a program Mary Pat Connolly has kept successful and strong since I was a part of the first freshman co-ed class. I give back to show Marist studentathletes the same loyalty, hard work, and dedication that I was shown during my time as a student-athlete at Marist. The tradi tions must continue so Marist can prosper. With the constant support from the Marist community and alumni, students are afforded opportunities that I am certain will lead them to a successful place in their future. Go Redhawks!

A Little Help
L Marist Connects is a series of events hosted by the Marist Associate Directory in conjunction with the Marist Development
18
Office, that serves as a means for alumni to unite to help further each other’s career quest or professional enhancement. Events are either held remotely or on the Marist Campus depending on the audience. The Marist Connects is reserved for young alumni who have matriculated through Marist and college who are seeking career guidance. Alumni, well established in their respective careers, offer insight, which hopefully will provide for a course of action. The remote locations are geared towards a business-tobusiness network for Marist Alumni. Quite often, members of the Marist Administration and Faculty will join in the “Marist Connects” to say hello and keep alumni apprised of what is new and exciting at our alma mater. Please follow the Marist Facebook page for future events. Our next downtown “Marist Connects” will be held at Rivers at 30 South Wacker on Thursday, September 12, 2013.

The Point
ife, it seems, is full of situations where friends and family members extend “a little help” to one another for all kinds of reasons, but what is nice is that good people will, for the most part, try to help others if possible. This is simply one of mankind’s best traits, and Marist people are certainly no exception to this particular quality. Consider, for example, the case of Nick Cozzi. Nick, who graduated in 2008, wants to be a physician – it is his dream, his goal, and his vision for the future. Enter Dr. Richard Byrne, who graduated from Marist in 1983. Rich also wanted to be a doctor, and in fact, realized his dream, first by attending to the University of Illinois for his undergraduate degree, and then by attending Northwestern Medical School. Today, Rich is the chairman of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center, and has been at Rush for 22 years. When Alumni Director, Marty Wirtz ‘72, learned that Nick was interested in medicine, he put Nick and Rich in touch with one another, and a mentorship was born. Actually, more than a mentorship developed; the two have become friends. “Dr. Bryne is my number one mentor,” Nick said. “He is very direct, gives honest feedback, and is someone who has always been in my corner. He is a guiding force in my life, and I’m just trying to continue being a sponge. He offers me so much.” Rich is equally enthusiastic about Nick. “Nick is a very driven, big-hearted person,” Rich said. “I think he’s destined to be successful in whatever he chooses. “Nick has come over to watch surgeries, and he has shadowed me many times. I had a great education at Marist, and besides that education, Marist is a very tight community. I’m happy to mentor anyone from Marist who wants to go to medical school.” Nick said he learned many things from Rich,

“
Dr. Bryne is very direct, gives honest feedback, and is someone who has always been in my corner. He is a guiding force in my life, and I’m just trying to continue being a sponge.” and one of the most important lessons is that medicine is not just a job, but a vocation. Toward that end, Nick was inspired to volunteer at two hospitals, which gave him meaningful experiences that solidified his understanding of the vocational status of medicine. “This taught me the importance of simply offering your hands to help. This truly is a vocation – it’s not a job. This isn’t about me – it’s about the patient. I have a degree in neuroscience, but primary care is my desired field, given those doctors’ abilities to establish patient-doctor partnerships, and facilitate lasting relationships, especially with the shortage of primary care physicians. “I’ve begun the application process to medical school and am busy finishing up an MBA degree which I will obtain this fall, which focuses on collaborative management and effective communication, two pillars that will be important, given the changes in our health care system.” Nick credits Rich with helping him reach his goals professionally and personally. “You see the phrase: ‘Be Marist, Live Marist and

Share Marist’ hanging in the main gym,” Nick said. “These are not just words. This is being a part of the Marist family, something bigger than yourself, and sharing that connection with someone because of the common root of Marist – something Dr. Byrne has done for me ever since I graduated from Marist. “There is nobody I respect and admire more in my life,” Nick said. “I feel very blessed and thankful that he would take the time to provide the mentorship. As a physician, I would want to be the ‘Dr. Byrne’ in a young student’s life, giving back to something that has given me so much.” Rich said he always appreciated the guidance he received from his Marist teachers, and he is happy to provide help to Nick, as well as other Marist grads. He very simply explained his goal in helping Nick. “I just hope to inspire someone to be the best they can be.”

Development Office Update It is only through the support of the Marist Family that the school continues to be an educational leader on the Southside, in Illinois and nationally. Your contributions will play a significant role in many important projects this summer. The most comprehensive, large-scale project is dedicated to technology on campus. Improvements include modernizing the wired and wireless infrastructure to support the

use of mobile devices throughout the campus. As we look forward to piloting many technology-enriched initiatives in the 2013-14 school year, we hope to continue inspiring forward front-thinking in both teaching and learning. Today’s millennial student has access to universal technology, both in and outside of the classroom, so the learning at Marist should be no different. To ensure our
student population is utilizing and benefiting from their general technology, we need to provide them a robust, yet secure platform from which to operate. Our focus needs to continually support a positive impact on learning, which may not necessarily call for a one-plan-fits-all scenario; rather deploy best learning efforts with technology strategies that makes sense.
❱❱ Don’t be a stranger to your alma mater: Come to a game, reunion, play or just stop by for a visit.
Giving our educators the opportunity to deliver video and audio content to their stu dents is a true benefit for anyone needing additional or remedial material. Students will have the capability to use electronic homework drop boxes to “deposit” their assign ments directly into their teacher’s web portal. As publishers continue to expand their electronic textbook selections, students will have a greater opportunity to take advan tage of utilizing this technology-enriched resource that should translate to lower costs for our families. A second summer project is to update two of our science rooms. Working with the science department, the administration submitted a plan that will upgrade two of the biology rooms to make more space and increase the numbers of students that can be in the lab at one time. Another less glamorous, but important upgrade will be new men’s bathrooms in the main gym area. This upgrade will feature more efficient “green” facilitates and a muchneeded remodeling. And lastly, your support has assisted in providing some of the resources needed to help families struggling with the economy and tuition. For those who may have intended to make a donation but have not yet this year, or others who would like to contribution again, please consider helping the students of Marist by visiting www.marist.net or using the attached envelope.
