MESSAGE FROM KATE
Dear Members, I am delighted to have the honor and privilege of introducing myself to you as your General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. While circumstances have not provided an opportunity to meet everyone in person, I have been gratified and appreciative for the very warm welcome I have received from Members and staff alike. In the months and years to come, I am looking forward to working with your Board of Governors and our exceptional management team to guide the Club through these challenging times. Perhaps what has impressed me most since arriving at the end of April is a universal sense of a bright and positive future at Polo. I arrived here while operations, with the exception of the incredible efforts of the Food & Beverage team, were shut down. I have used this time to begin developing solid working relationships with Board members and our dedicated staff, and become familiar with the scope and scale of operating a business with an annual budget of some $50 million. I have been gladdened by our ability over the past weeks to begin reopening some of the amenities and facilities which are the hallmark of the Polo lifestyle, and to do so with the health and safety of our Members and staff always at the forefront of these decisions. The Club leadership team has been unfailingly supportive in helping me climb a rather steep learning curve, and we have been working closely over the past several weeks to develop a responsible budget for the year beginning on October 1, 2020, especially in light of the uncertainty which characterizes today’s world. I am confident that the Board and Membership will be pleased at our collective efforts, and we will strive to deliver the absolute best possible experience in the coming year within the current environment. Please know, however, that my first priority will always be the safety and security of the Members and our staff, and we will incorporate that priority in every initiative we bring to you in the year to come. I take my responsibilities very seriously and thank the Board for the trust and confidence they have placed in me. We will embrace the opportunities that arise, knowing that the choices we make today will have a direct bearing on the continued success of the Polo Club. I am excited to move forward with the outstanding group of professionals on Polo’s team, and want to assure you that we will work diligently and responsibly in pursuit of maintaining and enhancing the lifestyle you have come to know and love at Polo. I am truly humbled and grateful to have been invited to lead this outstanding organization, and sincerely look forward to meeting as many Members as possible in the days and weeks to come.

Our Polo Opera Singer
Shayna Singer While many people associate luxury resort living in Boca Raton with retirement, they would be only partially correct. Polo Members come from all walks of life, and include some younger people just beginning their careers, like Shayna Singer, who just happens to have an interesting path in front of her. Shayna's most recent accomplishment was placing first at the Schmidt Vocal Competition for sophomore, junior and senior high school students last fall at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach. She won this award singing “Love’s Philosophy” by Roger Quilter. TRENDS asked Shayna a few questions about what’s next for her… Q: You're considered a “young” Polo Member. How do you like living at Polo and what do you enjoy most about it? A: I love living at Polo! It’s such a beautiful area and community that I am grateful to call it my home. Whenever I am stressed, I often go for long runs around the community to relax or go to the sauna to loosen up my body. Q: How long have you lived at Polo? A: For about three years. Q: You're also a professional singer. Where do you perform and how/where can other members hear you sing? A: I am! I perform at many school concerts, recitals and shows, as well as at Palm Beach Opera. I am always performing throughout the year in operas, choir performances, jazz concerts, and voice recitals.
Q: What are your favorite styles of music? Who inspires you? A: Although I mainly sing opera, I absolutely love listening to jazz singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson; it’s often a nice change from my obsession with classical music. An opera singer that inspires me is Nadine Sierra, a native South Floridian, who is now performing all over the world as a lead soprano. Q: Where do you attendo school? What do you plan to study in college? A: I am a senior at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek. I have gone through an extensive college application process this year and will study vocal performance and music education in college. Q: What do you plan to do with your singing talent and where do you want your career to take you? A: My dream is to perform all over the world! Ever since being on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in the Children’s Chorus, I have dreamed of going back as a lead soprano. I would love to be back on the stage doing what I’ve always loved. In addition to performing, I have a passion for teaching music. Q: Can Polo Members follow you on social media sites to keep up with your progress? A: Yes! I use Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to post videos, upcoming events, and accomplishments. All of my handles are @ shaynasinger. My YouTube channel, also @shaynasinger, has many videos of me singing, playing piano and conducting as well! POLOCLUB.NET

Susan Kanoff Fights Human Trafficking Former Educator Continues Teaching – But the Curriculum is About Safety, Awareness & Criminal Behavior Susan Kanoff
BY MICHELLE BROWN
In 2014, Susan Kanoff was ready to enjoy retirement with her husband, Don, after a 40year career in education. As a former high school teacher, assistant principal and college professor, Susan felt that Polo was the “right fit” for relaxation, playing tennis, exercising and being close to her brother, who lives five minutes away. But the transition was difficult; she was used to being active and was soon looking for more to do. In New Jersey, Susan was involved with the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). So she reached out to the organization about their work in South Florida and found herself engaged in a campaign to end human trafficking. “I was told that Florida had received a grant to raise awareness about human trafficking, and was asked if I wanted to get trained to do presentations in schools to educate students, parents and teachers,” she said. “With my background in education, I felt it was another good fit.”
ADVOCATING FOR THE UNHEARD, VULNERABLE AND YOUTH No longer with idle time on her hands, Susan is constantly juggling her commitments, which include playing in the Polo tennis league, spending time with her family, and also doing presentations throughout the county on the dangers and realities of human trafficking. Her prevention efforts include canvassing bathrooms to install notices informing potential victims of the human trafficking hotline, traveling to hotels and motels to find missing and exploited children by distributing flyers with their pictures, and distributing Chapstick® 6

lip balms with the hotline number, along with and doing community outreach with the Palm Beach Sherrif's Office and the FBI. Susan serves on the board for the Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches as vice president and education chair, and she is a speaker for the NCJW Anti-Sex Trafficking Speakers’ Bureau. The volunteer work, although demanding, is also energizing. “I’m so passionate about this. I’ve met with survivors, and they tell me what a difference this work makes,” she said. “I met a young girl, who was trafficked when she was 13 years old. She hugged me and told me, "please save other kids from going through what I went through." I used to work in inner-city schools in New York, so I know the importance of reaching out to children from all different areas. I know about the challenges that other people don’t always see. The ones who think it can’t happen to them are the most vulnerable.”
DISRUPTING THE RECRUITMENT OF VICTIMS WITH EDUCATION On any given day, there are estimated to be anywhere from 20 to 40 million victims of human trafficking. While most associate this crime with the sex trade, the majority of reports of international human trafficking involve victims enslaved to provide labor services, such as working in construction, landscaping, the hospitality industry, the restaurant industry, or in private homes.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Every year in the U.S., 100,000 to 300,000 children are at risk of being trafficked. Teenagers and pre-teens are lured into trafficking by people they thought were friends, but who are now manipulating them with violence or blackmail. Boyfriends coerce their girlfriends with emotional control. Kids post videos and stories online, sometimes using gaming sites to chat. Part of Susan’s work is educating parents who might think their children are not at risk. “Parents need to stop being ‘shocked’ at the statistics and the realities of trafficking and need to start talking to their kids about the recruiting tactics in school and online. Pretending it doesn’t happen doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Parents need open lines of communication with their kids and need to let
them know that if something bad happens, they can tell their parents without getting in trouble. Parents have to understand that children can be lured away from safe households, and then remain controlled through blackmail tactics,” she said.
WHAT YOU CAN DO For all audiences, the message is “learn the warning signs and if you see something suspicious, say something.” Call the National human trafficking hotline at 1-888-373-7888. All tips are anonymous and law enforcement will investigate the information. Susan welcomes Polo members who are interested to learn more to contact her on ways to help. “Call me. I’m always open to getting people involved with this important work,” she said.
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS
This year, the Polo Club and its Members raised $13,200 from the Gift Cards for Kids Program and presented The Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services with a check.

Polo Members participate in thanking Guatemala for support of Israel by providing humanitarian aid. BY ABE NARKUNSKI
Polo Club’s Herman Kotler and Dr. Peter Bendetson were instrumental in creating the third trip to Guatemala last January, when Polo Members Rosette and Abe Narkunski, Ana Blatman, Helen and Joel Vale and Rhonda Small joined 20 members of Temple Beth El of West Palm Beach on the mission, accompanied by pastor Becky Keenan of Houston, TX. The focus was to express gratitude to the people of Guatemala and its government for the courageous relocation of their embassy to Jerusalem and bring humanitarian aid to Mayan villages.

In 1947 at the United Nations, Guatemala, after the United States, was the second country to support the creation of the State of Israel. In 2017, Guatemala followed the United States in moving its embassy to Jerusalem. The Polo contingent thought it appropriate to again thank everyone involved for their unwavering support. In Guatemala City, at the larger of two synagogues, we met with newly elected president, Alexander Giammattei, and presented him with a menorah, where he graciously received the Jewish community of Guatemala and our Polo contingency. President Giammattei stated unequivocally, "Any friend of Israel is a friend of Guatemala, any enemy of Israel is an enemy of Guatemala." The President then continued his presentation by formally recognizing that "Hezbollah is a terrorist organization." Following the meeting with the president, the group participated in Kabbalat Shabbat in the synagogue. The following day, we visited with the Guatemalan parliament in their house of Congress, where The Polo Club presented 4 leading Evangelical ministers with mezuzahs. I had an idea to create a tank with a fun slogan in an effort to lift spirits and create a greater sense of community during this difficult time: WE ARE POLO STRONG. I asked a few friends if they would want to purchase one. A few quickly grew to 40 and before I knew it, I was receiving texts and calls from women throughout the club. One of my friends here, Barbara Rechter, loved the idea so much that she started reaching out to her friends as well and next thing we knew we had ordered and distributed more than 150 tanks. The Polo Club truly is one big family and to see all the ladies wearing them around the club running, walking and biking, puts such a smile on our face Thanks to all our friends at Polo who helped make this campaign a great success!!

Harvey Weitz’s Active Lifestyle
Hits 90 Years BY MICHELLE BROWN
and Counting at Polo
One would think that after decades of standing on his feet in a courtroom, representing thousands of clients, Harvey Weitz would want to sit down and rest. After all, he is almost 91 years old.
But no. This active Polo member can be found in either the gym, on the squash court or still in the courtroom. Harvey continues to practice law, now assisting his two sons at either of their law firms in New York. Although he considers his wife’s decision to move them to Polo for the season the best decision she’s ever made — and she’s made a lot of good ones — he remains a man in motion, not one lounging by the pool. Chances are good he will be on the Pickleball courts. “You make a lot of friends playing Pickleball. Men and women play at the same level, so there is a lot of competition,” he said. “At Polo, we had a Pickleball demonstration with a nationally recognized pro, Sarah Ansboury, a tennis pro from Mar-A-Lago, who lives here, and two much younger women, one may have been a teenager. We had an audience of 90 people watching, and it was great fun. Any Tennis member can be part of the Pickleball program, you don’t have to be a tennis player. If you have ever played ping pong, you can play Pickleball.
} 32
“I would urge the club to install another Pickleball court,” he said. “It’s almost like the Field of Dreams; build it and they will come.” Harvey took up squash after seeing Polo instructor Natasha Kretschmer playing with another Polo member. The member was a national champion in his age group – 80s – so Harvey figured that if he practiced long and hard enough he could try to achieve the same status in his 90s.
“I like to compare myself to a self-winding watch. If you stop moving, the watch stops dead,” he said. “You have to keep in motion physically and mentally. I play within my physical abilities, but I keep at it.”
SPRING/SUMMER 2020 | TRENDS MAGAZINE
}
“I don’t think there will be anyone else in my age group when I reach tournament level,” he said, laughing. “I am having a great time learning squash with Natasha. I believe Polo is the only club that has a squash court.” In the gym, Harvey sees only a couple of members older than he, staying fit, but his fitness schedule is probably the most demanding. He views his work-outs as necessities. His body bounces back from injury faster. After tearing his Achilles tendon last year, he was back on the Pickleball courts within six months. He also needs to remain strong to catch flights, navigate New York, and stand for hours in court. Weitz views his work as an opportunity to keep his mind just as fit as his body.
His profile on the website of Paul B. Weitz & Associates, PC states that he earned his J.D. in 1954 from Brooklyn Law School and received his A.B. in 1951 from Brooklyn College. With more than 100 cases resulting in verdicts in excess of $1 million each, Harvey has concentrated his practice in the areas of civil law, trial practice, medical malpractice, and product liability. Harvey served as president of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, as Dean of the New York State Trial Lawyers Institute, National Secretary of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and President of the New York State Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. A member of the Inner Circle of Advocates, an organization of the top 100 lawyers in the country, Harvey was elected to the Trial Lawyers Hall of Fame at the Baisley School of Law in Philadelphia. He represented the State of New York, as lead attorney, in the landmark tobacco litigation, gaining a settlement in excess of $27 billion dollars. Harvey has also authored a number of books on trial law, including the best-selling “Art of Summation.”
He shows no signs of stopping any time soon. “I like to compare myself to a self-winding watch. If you stop moving, the watch stops dead,” he said. “You have to keep in motion physically and mentally. I play within my physical abilities, but I keep at it.” Harvey lives with his wife of 65 years, Tanya; they have two sons and six grandchildren, two of whom are ranked tennis players at the high school and collegiate levels.

We will initiate this lasting change with small steps in our Polo Vino program, The High Tea Service and signature dinners. Be sure to sign up for next season’s event series featuring the less appealing produce and hope to do our part in improving our foot print on the planet.
