Polo Technique with Eduardo Amaya: Getting out of the Saddle Standing up in your seat when preparing to hit the ball gives you better control and leverage for propelling the ball down the field. For balance, use a three-point position by placing your rein hand on the neck of the horse and using the weight in your feet to steady your body. The two basic positions for hitting are what I call the “half seat” and the “hitting platform.” The half seat is the position most commonly used when riding down the field. It is best for short strokes, scooping, and when you are close to the goal mouth. The hitting platform is used to power long shots down the field. For the half seat, incline your upper body slightly forward. Adjust your feet so that they are placed directly below your hips, providing support for your upper body and swing. Position your middle body just above the pommel of the saddle, using pressure from the legs, knees and thighs to maintain a low center of balance. The hitting position resembles the half seat, but the body is moved higher up, with the pelvis adjusted further forward and above the saddle allowing the player to lean out.

Ignacio Saenz of Listo Polo finds balance between the half seat and the hitting platform while using a half swing.

In the series of images above, Ignacio Saenz demontrates a position that is between a half-seat and the hitting platform. This position is often used by good players throughout a polo game when going fast because it provides equilibrium and balance. This photo shows half swing and the horse in a left leading leg.
