SENIOR SCHOOL CO-CURRICULUM AUTUMN 2022
PGS is incredibly proud of our co curriculum, and the huge range of opportunities that we offer our pupils on a daily basis. It provides them with the environment to develop core values, new skills and strengths outside of the classroom and explore interests in unique and exciting ways.
Having multiple interests helps with time management, organisation and planning, all of which are important life skills and are highly desirable both in the world of employment, and, of course, in our day to day lives. The co-curriculum is an excellent way for pupils to enhance their mental and physical health and well being, whether through physical activity, creative expression or taking time for personal mindfulness.
Our co curriculum is central to the offering to pupils and broadly spans six main areas of Sport, Outdoor Education, Music, Drama, Art and Clubs and Societies. The latter of which can be further subdivided into: 'Academic and Self Enrichment', 'Challenge and Exploration', 'Charity and Pupil Voice', 'Creativity and Expression' and 'Service and Leadership'.
The breadth of activity on offer cultivates opportunities for pupils to develop softer skills and interests that will prove invaluable as they move on to further education and into the world of work, ultimately preparing them for successfully for life at 25 and beyond.
I am always keen to hear feedback and suggestions on the co curriculum from pupils and parents and should you wish to share any thoughts or ideas for improvement, please contact me directly (c.ellis@pgs.org.uk)
I wish you all the best for the term ahead.
Mr Ellis
Assistant Head (Co-curricular)
SOCS
All activity sign up has moved to SOCS online. Each login will be individualised so you should only see activities applicable to you and your child. This platform is also linked to their academic timetable and both sets of information will be visible on the calendar function, allowing individuals to see exactly what they have signed up to as well as any clashes.
Parents can access SOCS through My School Portal. Once you log into My School Portal, you will find the SOCS icon on the home screen. After clicking on this icon, you will be taken to the SOCS homepage. Pupils can sign up to actvities by clicking on the SOCS icon on PGS Online. Owing to the use of the school single sign-on system, you should not need additional login details. Once logged in, you can follow the step-by-step guide which illustrates how to sign up for activities. Please note that your browser log in will need to match that of the parent/student portal in order for the single sign on to be successful.
The majority of activities are set up on a first come, first serve basis and the sign up for activities is open from now. However, should you wish to join a club that is full, please do contact the member of staff in charge of that activity to see whether additional sign ups can be accommodated.
Year 9
Year 9 pupils have a slightly different sign up process due to their Monday night activity programme. Pupils will be able to set their top three preferred activities for a Monday night, with '1' being their preferred option for this rotation. This is not dependent on first come first served, but choices will need to be made within the time identified below. We will then work to ensure that as many pupils as possible have their first choice, although please be aware that this may not always be possible. One can sign up for all other activities as above.
Sign up: 2100 Wednesday 7th September - 1700 Wednesday 14th September
For any clubs that are chargeable (all chargeable clubs are identified in this booklet and within SOCS), an additional email will be sent to you once the sign up window has been closed, outlining how payment can be made.
If there are any other problems or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. (c.ellis@pgs.org.uk)
Clash Management
We are keen that pupils have the opportunity to experience as many activities as possible during their time at PGS. However, at times, despite our efforts, there will be occasions when clashes cannot be avoided.
In these situations we would ask that the pupils raise any clashes will the members of staff who lead each activity at the earliest possibility. Members of staff will, as far as possible, work with the pupil, and staff members leading other activities, to achieve an agreed balance of participation. This should allow pupils to enjoy the benefits of participating in all activities concerned, as well as providing a valuable experience in compromise and self management.
In the event that any parent or pupil feels that clashes have not been handled successfully, an email should be sent to me, Mr Ellis directly (c.ellis@pgs.org.uk); I can then support a review of the management of the situation and help find the best way forward.

Discuss with activity leaders Reach a compromise
We want to maximise the capabilities and experiences of all students through sport and physical activity, so that they may flourish to their highest potential during and beyond their time at PGS. As such, we believe that physical activity plays a crucial role in every pupil’s life at PGS.
The co curriculum offers another opportunity for enjoyment, challenge and personal improvement, in addition to the weekly PE and Games Programme.
The co curriculum offering continues to focus on the core sports of the school, whilst also ensuring increased breadth by encompassing other team and individual activities.
We hope that through these activities, the students feel a real sense of belonging and attachment to the PGS community, in addition to developing lifelong healthy and active habits, and also improving their performance levels .

‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, adapted by David Edgar
One ghostly Christmas night, cold-hearted businessman Ebenezer Scrooge gets the fright of his life, discovers the truth about himself, and learns to love his neighbour. Performed by a large and exceptionally talented cast drawn from throughout the Senior School, our production of the Charles Dickens classic one of the best loved stories ever written evokes the spirit of Christmas whilst exploring the social conscience of the timeless tale in a spine tingling, funny and moving performance suitable for 7 to 107.

‘Chicago’ (Teen Edition) by John Kander and Fred Ebb
Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star, does away with her lover and is arrested. In the Cook County Jail, Roxie meets her hero, the famed double-murderess and nightclub performer Velma Kelly. When both acquire the same lawyer, tensions come to a head as they vie for the spotlight in front of a besotted press pack. Performed by a cast of superb musical performers and dancers, with a famous score, scintillating choreography and timeless lyrics, Chicago is funny, intelligent and as smart and scathing a musical as they come.

DANCE
The enthusiasm for dance has grown and gained incredible momentum since the success of the Dance society last year. Portsmouth Grammar School entered the National Dance Live Competition winning their Heat and coming 2nd overall, in what was an incredibly talented field.
This competition encourages dancers to perform in a variety of styles and PGS have embraced this challenge by ensuring dance clubs of differing genres are available to pupils.
The benefits of dance include improved coordination, reduced stress and depression as well as enhancing cardiovascular fitness.
