By: Francie Baldwin When it comes to the world of advertising, marketing, and media, there are so many choices out there, and your budget isn’t something you can just spend for fun to see what happens. You have to make the right decision, because oftentimes, there isn’t enough funds to not get it right the first time. So, how do you really decide where you are going to invest your advertising dollars? Television, Radio, Magazine, Newspaper, Billboards, Direct Mail, Online, or Sponsorships… what is the right decision? Right now, the internet is really where it’s at. The benefits to leveraging online platforms to your advantage are endless, but here are some of the reasons that I love online and why it makes sense for a lot of business. This might be why digital actually ranked higher in 2016 and saw an even bigger leading gap in 2017 in dollars spent according to eMarketer.com. 1. Instant Gratification – you know in real time what is working, what isn’t working, and what the results are. You don’t have to wait for days, weeks, or months to get a great idea if something is working or not, you can see everything in real time as it’s happening and make adjustments. What that really translates to is that you can save time and money because you can change things quickly based on the response. 2. Targeting – just about everything you do online can be tracked which makes targeting your customer really simple. You can get as specific as you want and target based on a certain demographic, psychographic,
Mag_final.indd 7
and geographic area all at the same time. This helps to eliminate waste and make sure that your advertising investment is being spent on your audience and isn’t being wasted. It also helps to reallocate your budget if you see you are getting the response you thought from your target audience. 3. Creative Changes – when you see something isn’t working, you are able to change it quickly and adapt. You can often times change out your message or creative very quickly compared to other mediums available. You can also start with multiple creative messages, and based on responses, make adjustments fast. You don’t get this in any other outlets as you can make changes in real time. 4. A little goes a long way – right now, online advertising is one of the most undervalued platforms available, which is a big advantage to you. It’s really the newest form of advertising and marketing out there, even though it’s been around for years. When anything is the newest form, it is the most undervalued option out there. So you can get the most mileage out of your advertising dollar. Always a plus!!! 5. Consumer Friendly – this is important to build your business quickly. The action your customer has to take is relatively short, easy, and gets them where they need to go quickly. When you are marketing online, it’s very easy for someone to click on the ad or click a link to get to where they need to go to take the action you want them to. They don’t have to remember a website or phone number to be able to connect with you, they can just click, so it’s a faster and easier response for the customer.

FACEBOOK ADVERTISING GROWTH TOOL, OR TOTAL TAKEDOWN
What’s the best for online marketing? This is not as easy to answer because there are so many options when it comes to online marketing and advertising. Between all of the social media platforms, ad networks, PPC, mobile, and video options online, where do you turn? Well, one of the biggest areas of advertising growth has been on Mobile, and Facebook as a delivery platform has seen tremendous growth year to year. Facebook is often viewed as the place to get the best return on investment for your ad dollar, and also where a lot of people turn to spend their ad dollars. There is no question that the ROI on here can be great when done well, but the recent spotlight on Facebook and the transparency of advertisers on the platform has come into question. Most of this being a result of the most recent Presidential Election in the USA. For anyone who has happened to miss all the news in the past 6 months, there has been a lot of discussion about Russians placing ads on the social media platform to help support Trump in the election. Facebook then coming under heat for not being aware of this, not stopping it, and not having tighter constraints. So as a result, Facebook has responded by paying better attention to what advertisers are doing on their platform. Which can be both good and bad for you… the advertiser. If you have ever read the Facebook guidelines, you will see there are a lot of dos and even more don’ts, and now they are being enforced.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BAD NEWS FIRST… 1. Enforcing the rules – so you always hear the saying that rules are meant to be broken, but that isn’t the case when it comes to Facebook. When you don’t follow the advertiser guidelines, Facebook will block your ad. If you have too many blocked ads, then your entire account can get blocked. So you have to follow the rules for what you can advertise, what you can use for images, and how much text can be represented in an image. Facebook has been rapidly hiring more and more people to view and review ads to make sure they follow the guidelines. Now it’s become harder to try and sneak some things past the ad reviewers. 2. Banned Categories - Facebook continues to add to their categories of what you can’t advertise on their platform. The most recent to make the banned list is anything relating to Cryptocurrencies, including ICO’s, Events, Webinars, or Investment opportunities. Facebook has a long list of categories it bans advertising from, so we are going to see an increase in restrictions and potentially other industries added to this list.
AND THE GOOD NEWS… 1. Scammers be gone – it’s weeding out the people and industries that tend to have a lot of people trying to scam others out of money. So if you are a product or service that is advertising, then there is some legitimacy there already because you are advertising on the platform. 2. Easier for true advertisers – with Facebook being tough on their policies, people who don’t know how to use the platform or how to follow the guidelines will be weeded out. So for those of us that know what we are doing, we will be in a great position moving forward. The recent ban on all ads related to cryptocurrencies has led to some people in the cryoto-educational space to be without a business, or at least a way to generate new leads overnight. Some of the leaders in the industry feel it was a good thing so that all the people who were just trying to make a quick dollar will be quickly weeded out. Regardless this has started to leave a lot of people with the question, “what would I do if my industry is banned from the Facebook platform?”
Mag_final.indd 8
Has Facebook become a tool that too many people are solely reliant on?
Now what about those who can’t advertise on Facebook?
Facebook has become a platform that a lot of people go to, and many would say it’s the best platform online for a great return on your investment if you know what you’re doing. However, after recent bans and cracking down on their policies, it’s always great to keep in mind and work on the plan for diversification. If you are just relying on Facebook and/or Instagram to advertise, it’s time to start considering other platforms and forms or advertising that will also grow your business and generate a positive ROI. Depending on how completive your industry is, Google adwords can prove to be a great alternative for you to consider online.
With all the talk of what Facebook does well, we haven’t discussed what all the banned categories should do. Yes, Facebook bans the obvious things like tobacco, alcohol, pornography, illegal drugs, weapons, and adult products, but they also ban some other categories as well. These other categories include investments, gambling, dating services, supplements, and any MLM business or financial services. Some of these banned categories make a lot of sense...it’s understandable to not advertise pornography or drugs. On the other hand, the dating services and financial services doesn’t make much sense. This may be because when Facebook started, the primary audience was college aged students, and the age range on the platform is very wide spread. However, with a much older average age than where it once started, these advertisers now do not have any options on Facebook.
3/23/2018 9:10:14 AM
9 Powerful Magazine February 2018
So what do they do to market? 1. The first option is to go off Facebook – some of these categories are going to be challenging on any platform to advertise. You know who you are if you are in one of these categories. For some of these other categories, you will have better luck on Google’s ad platform or some other ad exchanges online. 2. Get creative on Facebook – for these categories that can’t advertise, it doesn’t always mean you can’t have a Facebook page. You can still create a Facebook account, have followers, and engage with them to gain followers which can turn into potential customers. You can always post on your page, business or personal, to let people know you have a business and that people can engage with you and become your customer. 3. Fan Page – set up a fan page for yourself as a brand. People like to engage with people, not always businesses. If you are engaging with people as a person, it isn’t as obvious about what business you are doing so promotions and advertisements aren’t as quick to get blocked. I have worked with people in the dating and matchmaking area which is blocked by Facebook, but they run ads for a quiz to find out what type of dater you are or what type of date you like. These run off of a fan page and help build a list which can then be marketed to. You can also build a large enough audience where you can post about a webinar or landing page on your page and not pay for an ad to drive customers to go directly to your site. So, there are a few different things you can use your Fan Page for to help you.

The Reality of Facebook Really the reality of anything when it comes to marketing is, yes you do want to find what is working best for you and do as much of that as you can while it continues to work. However, with anything, the saying rings true here… you can’t put all your eggs into one basket. If you aren’t diversifying, then you are letting Facebook or whatever platform you are using dictate your future when it comes to your business. You always want to remember that wealth equals control, so you want to have a way to be in control. Remember… 1. Always test different things – don’t get stuck doing only one thing. 2. Use what works – while you are testing, stick the majority of your budget with what is working well for you. 3. Adjust fast – if something isn’t working, make changes and do it fast. Don’t stick with something that isn’t working… that’s not good for business. So while Facebook can absolutely help you grow your business, it can also be the end of your business if you are completely relying on the platform and they decide to block your industry from ads. Always be ready to protect against the downside.

IS YOUR TIME MANAGING YOU OR ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR TIME? Time management is one of the most challenging aspects for so many entrepreneurs and business owners alike. So we decided to spend some time with JT Foxx and look at his schedule and how he is able to manage it from day to day. “It’s no secret that I am very good at time management. It was my biggest weakness is now its become one of my biggest strengths.” – JT Foxx Everyone has the same 24 hours. So how do I run all my companies, properties and world schedule, it’s actually easier than you think. It’s not about time management, it’s about energy management. Most of us don’t have the issue with scheduling the day, it’s actually sticking to the schedule throughout the day. All it takes is one phone call or email to knock us off of our plan and all the dominos come falling down. Here is a look at one of my days and how it’s scheduled.

This was a day that I didn’t have a speaking engagement or event booked.
How do I stay on track? Here are some tips to help you plan out your day,
and then actually stick to the plan that you have put together. 1. Check emails when scheduled – emails can be the biggest culprit of stealing your time. So when you scheduled to check emails, try not to spend additional time on your emails outside of what you have scheduled. 2. Don’t schedule too much – when you are first starting to schedule your day and your time, you need to start small and not overwhelm yourself. Then every day you can schedule in more and more things until you get the hang of it. 3. One bad day isn’t the end – guess what, every once and a while something will happen and your day won’t go as scheduled. Don’t worry it happens to everyone at some point, so just plan the next day and move forward. 4. Order is important – make sure that you schedule something that you don’t want to do before something you want to do. So you do the challenging thing and then are rewarded with something that is easier to do. 5. Be creating when you’re most creative – if you have to spend time being creative, do it at the time of day that you find yourself to be the most creative. The biggest takeaway is to take control of your schedule, make sure that you follow the schedule, and make adjustments daily until you get to a place where it comes naturally to you.

As a direct contrast to the Baby Boomers and the Gen X-ers, these younger generations want to do it differently than those who have come before them. The “old” way of looking at education was, go to primary school and get good grades, then as a late teenager you go to secondary school (College or University), then after that would you have a degree and get a good job. Once you secure that good job, you stay with that company until you retire.

MILLENNIALS AND GEN Z’S WANT TO DO IT DIFFERENTLY!
Powerful Magazine February 2018
ENTREPRENEUR OR EDUCATION?
A lot of Baby Boomers held an average number of 2.9 jobs in the professional career, according to census data. This is excluding teenage years and early twenties before they would be considered to be in a professional job. Millennials are often referred to as “hoppers” as they tend to hop from job to job, with less than 29% of this generation feeling “engaged” in the workplace. As a result, most industries are finding ways to adapt and appeal to these very large generations that are coming of age. Where does that leave the educational system? Knowing that there is a very large difference in how this group views the world and how they want to live in it, should adjustments be made to the process? For the Baby Boomers, it was very common to go to school, get the education and then find a good job. This may have been to a College, University, or Trade School, but there was that need to get the education and then get that job that would be able to provide for them and their families for years. These earlier generations often would follow their studies into their career, which is a little different in the newer generations. Now it seems there is a different sentiment towards education, and more questioning about the relevance of what is being taught in schools. The very common situation to now find is someone who went to school under a certain study, and now works in a completely different industry. It is harder to find someone who works in the area they went to school for if you look outside the medical, and legal professions. Do changes need to be made in the process, or is the ways it’s always been done good enough?

What are the Millennials and Generation Z’s looking for? They aren’t buying homes, cars, getting married, or doing anything the same way the generations before them have, so there has been a lot of research to predict this group as the early millennials are getting into their years for dominate spending power, and the late Millennials and Gen Z groups are entering their secondary education phase and entry to the job market. These generations are also highly inspired by the entrepreneurs that came before them, looking up to people like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Michael Dell of Dell, and Bill Gates of Microsoft. Also, these people created highly successful companies and are some of the wealthiest people in the world today. Another thing, they didn’t need a college education to make that happen. Peter Thiel recognizing this in this new generation even had a scholarship he awards to a student who drops of out school to pursue their business idea, and that award is $100,000 (yes US Dollars to drop out of school). Thiel is now most well known for his venture capital firm, but before that, Thiel was one of the Paypal founders and one of the first investors in Facebook. So you could say he knows a little something about spotting a great idea and the talent behind the idea to make it a success. Although he went to Stanford University, he’s now encouraging talented kids with great ideas to drop out of their schooling. So who is wright and who is wrong? Is it better to drop out of school and start a business, or is it better to get that education? Also the topic of kids who don’t have the funds to do either hasn’t been discussed yet, so what are they supposed to do? The question still stands, does it make more sense for these generations to get the schooling or to start their own business? There are very strong arguments that can be made from both sides, with some agreeing that at the age most youth is when they can either decide to continue their education or start something else, they just don’t have the level of maturity to start a business., with people on the other side saying that it’s easier now for anyone of any age to actually start and launch a business at any age. So, like everything, there are opposing views and arguments that can be made to support both sides.
LET’S SPEAK WITH AN EXPERT… Wanting an outside opinion and seeking someone with experience, the choice was simple, Dr. Jennifer Herrera, with over 16 years in the educational space, a PhD from University of Arizona in Language, Reading and Culture, and being a business founder and CEO, she has a lot of experience. The business she has founded and ran of 16 years is Tucson International Academy, which is in the education space. However, at Tucson International Academy, things are done just a little differently. That is why Dr. Herrera’s input was what we wanted to hear on this topic.
Mag_final.indd 16
3/23/2018 9:10:18 AM
I had just completed my PhD in Language, Reading and Culture, and my teaching colleagues asked me what I was going to do with my PhD to make a real difference in education. So, we started dreaming of what would the ideal school look like......what resources, structure, curriculum, and unique aspects of learning would we implement. Also what OUTCOME did we want? I wanted to create a school so focused that any students wanting to go to college would be more than adequately prepared academically, financially, and emotionally with a confident mindset. And that dream was so compelling that one night I couldn’t sleep. So that night I looked up information online about the charter school authorization application for the state of Arizona where I live and have taught for 28 years. (Charter schools are free public schools that offer families school choice- the right to take their child to any school they want, regardless of where they live in a city.) It was an easy format to follow, so I began filling it out and couldn’t stop. By 5:00 AM the next day, I had completed the first level application for approval. And, I hit “submit.” One week later, I was invited to finish the application process and was offered a contract 5 months later. Now, 16 years later, I have 4 charter school campuses that serve kindergarten through grade 12 at each location. For the past 10 years, 100% of our graduates are accepted to college! This is unique because 92% of our students’ parents do not have a college or university degree. This is WHY I started the Tucson International Academies.
Powerful Magazine February 2018
(Dr. Jennifer Herrera) While teaching in the public school system in Arizona for 12 years with primarily Hispanic students, I noticed that many of my very smart and talented students were not going to college. When I asked them why, they said they could never afford college or university and did not know how to even apply. I was so surprised! My parents never let me consider NOT going to college. I was expected to get a 4 year university degree and that seemed natural and easy to me. So I went and achieved my BA in Education, as I always enjoyed working with students. So now I’m seeing my incredibly gifted students NOT even attempting college! It is an injustice!I At that moment I decided I would find a way to change that outcome to 100% of students prepared to go to college, if they had discipline and desire to go to college.
17
(The Powerful) Why did you start the Tucson International Academy?
(TP) What do you think the benefits of going to University are? (Dr. Jennifer Herrera) A university education opens doors of opportunity that might not otherwise be opened and can break the cycle of generational poverty. Education sets one apart in background knowledge and expertise. The higher education one attains, the more distinct one becomes in his or her industry. In the United States, 83% of Americans have a High School Diploma; 33.4% of Americans have a Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year university college; 9.3% of Americans have a Master’s degree, and 2% of Americans have a Doctoral degree. As the #1 Wealth Coach and genius in business, JT FOXX urges us, his clients, to become the expert and the authority in our businesses. Part of being the expert and the authority is to know your area and work in your strength. Education can greatly help train, equip and challenge cognitive growth to build confidence and expertise in any area. Educational credential lend credibility to business and intensify the level of tribute and trust given to people who are the authority. The discipline it takes to complete a degree transfers well into healthy business practices. While studying at university, key relationships form and grow and are excellent for doing business together. College also exposes one to multiple cultures, languages and value systems, expanding the ability to do business with many different kinds of people all over the world. How do degrees translate to the concept of “expertise?” In a book published in 2011 entitled Outliers: The Story of Success, written by Malcolm Gladwell, research is examined from the early 1990s. The study found that people become efficient in a profession after focusing and learning and practicing around 1,000 hours (4 hours per day for one year of focus, practice and study). However, those who demonstrated outstanding expertise at a genius level in their profession had focused, studied, and practiced an average of 10,000 hours (6 hours per day for 6 years and 4 months)! It appears that only by reaching 10,000 hours of practice could one become an “outlier” or genius level of expertise. Gladwell states that the “Tipping-Point” of greatness takes 10,000 hours. These numbers of hours equate to college degrees. The basic efficiency level of mastery is about 1 year, which is equivalent to a training certificate in a higher learning program or intensive practicum or internship. The genius level of mastery is about 4 years (Bachelor’s degree) if one spends 8 hours of focus and study per day OR 6.5 years (Master’s or Doctoral Degree) if spending 6 hours of focus and study per day. A university education is a place to grow, exchange ideas, create, innovate, discuss and further research that leads to incredible discoveries and advancement. Living on a campus while in college is an added learning experience as you share living with other scholars and students. Together you have incredible experiences and build relationships unique to the university setting that last a lifetime.

(TP) Do you think some youth is better suited to start their own business? (Dr. Jennifer Herrera) I do not see the choice. I think we do well to advise and encourage students of all ages to pursue BOTH a college degree AND start a business. The college degree will develop expertise and authority. The business will provide income (whether making lots of money or a little money) while giving opportunity for the college student to apply what he or she is learning at university in a practical way. Many of the skills needed for college are ALSO needed for business. There are 5 main sets of skills: Communication Skills, Thinking Skills, Learning Skills, Entrepreneurship Skills, and Personal Development Skills. Each set of skills contributes to both academic and business success! Together, an education and business experience set people up for the best long term success. Can one skip education and start their own business? Yes. The question is do they want to be the expert or authority? If so, they need to either go to school themselves or affiliate or partner themselves with someone highly educated or with huge success in that field so “amazing genius” can be demonstrated to set them apart, far and above, the competition. (TP) Are there personality traits or indicators of who should go to University vs. Be an Entrepreneur? (DR) University students and Entrepreneurs have all kinds of different personality traits. What helps is to get an understanding of your own personality traits early into your studies or business building so you can surround yourself with the right supports. For example, know if you tend to be more right brained or left brained. Take a DISC or similar inventory to see what skills will be easier to obtain for your success. What do you want? Why do you want it? Answer these 2 basic questions and you can ground yourself with your unique motivation for creating your vision! Create a mission statement and implement systems in your life to BE and DO what brings fulfillment and success authentically into your life. (TP) How can TIA help both segments of youth? (DR) In our model high schools at TIA, we help both college bound students and future entrepreneurs. At TIA we help students by creating disciplines to attain high academic achievement while competing in local entrepreneurial competitions in a business plan contest via our Business Club. Once the business plan is established, students at TIA are encouraged to implement the business plan and begin receiving a profit. It is a huge learning curve well managed with experienced school staff and with the relationships we establish through our annual Career Fair when 35 local businesses showcase their success in miniature conferences for our students. We also partner with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for mentorship.
Mag_final.indd 18
That seems to be what Herrera has worked to create at the Tucson International Academy, instead of choosing one side or the other Dr. Herrera is looking to find that education and entrepreneurial balance with her schools. At TIA, they have a Business Club in which the students can take part to help foster growth for their idea and turn it into a business. TIA isn’t exactly taking the Thiel approach and encouraging kids to not continue school or drop out, but instead encouraging their ideas and showing them what they would need to do in order to make it an actual business. Integrating both education and entrepreneurism together in one environment. Results of the Business Club at TIA are some unique ideas, and business that these students have created. Meet Cristian Navaro, Owner of Project Kickz, Currently Attending college. He attended TIA for 4 years of high school and is now in college, and is a business owner. In an interview, Christian says , “I’ve been into business ever since I was young. The thought of owning a business and being my own boss seems to be for me.” His time at TIA in the Business Club allowed him to develop Project Kickz, a sneaker restoration and customization business, which he now looks at as a way to help pay for college, food and gas while he continues his education launched in Business Club at TIA. Dr. Herrera remembers Christian as a stand out student because of his interest in business, and that is the exact reason that they started the Business Club. It allows the students to really develop their business idea and become an entrepreneur at the same time.

These are just two of the entrepreneurial stories to come of the TIA, but there are so many more just like it. Dr. Herrera looks at the opportunity to offer the experiences to students that will not only educate but also help inspire the entrepreneurs in the youth as well. She thinks that it doesn’t have to be a one or the other, but rather an educational environment that can speak to both groups and help both grow not push them into a direction.
The economic issues facing education… how do we solve that? What happens when we have a child that wants to go to continue their education but doesn’t have the funds to do so, regardless where they are from? It is another challenge that must be overcome. Yes, different secondary education outlets offer scholarships, but that isn’t going to work for everyone, and student loans aren’t always a viable option either. So how do we address creating opportunities for everyone to be able to get to college that wants to? Dr. Jennifer Herrera started Tucson International Academy with that very objective in mind, their tag line being “We Make College Come True.” There are a few different ways that the TIA team makes this happen for their students. One of the things they have found is that sometimes you only know what you are exposed to. Meaning that if you come from poverty, and that is what you see on a daily basis, you can’t always open up to other possibilities and opportunities out there. As a result, it becomes easy to believe that maybe you don’t have the same things available to you that others do. One of the things that TIA does to overcome this is incorporate travel opportunities into their programs. Yes, a lot of the students families wouldn’t be able to send them to walk the Great Wall of China, eat lunch in the Eiffel Tower, or to feed Kangaroos in Australia however, that is the point of what they are doing with their travel program. Dr. Herrera says that they are able to make this happen as they work out great group rates for the school, and then it’s up to the kids to make it happen. Each child that goes on the trip is responsible for completing fundraising efforts to be able to go on the trip. There are multiple lessons behind this project.
1. Goal Setting – Not everything in life is going to come easily to us, especially if we don’t set a goal and then develop a plan to get there. 2. Accomplishment – it helps these children understand what it is like to set a goal, and then achieve that goal. This is a great lesson to teach, especially to someone who isn’t sure that they can accomplish something. 3. Overcoming Obstacles – Once you find out you can overcome an obstacle you start to see other things that you thought might not be possible, and now they become possible. After they come back from this trip, with a new view of the world, other cultures and how other people live they develop a new world view. Then the magic happens as they start to believe that things are possible, and that they are capable of going to college, starting a business, or making whatever vision they have a reality. Something happens when you start to expose people, really at any age, to other cultures outside of their own. The travel and outreach doesn’t stop there either. The Tucson International Academy is also committed to finding communities around the world and creating programs to help them get their kids into college or university. TIA wants to create a World Education Network to make this happen and really make it possible to have children from communities around the world have the ability to make their dreams come true. We asked Dr. Herrera for some more incite on this global project.

There is a subconscious level of thinking that causes people around the world to assume they can’t be successful in their own country. While there may be many advantages for education and business in America, the US is not the only place the dream of college can come true. We believe our program can be customized to achieve the desires of any community committed to furthering the education and success of their children. Successful business woman from South Africa, Johanna Mukoki, co-founder of Travel with Flair
mentioned in a speech that she partners with educational prep schools to recruit graduates to work in her company. She is an example of a great business that can offer opportunities for career development and employment for a local community that so desires. If there is a booming business benefiting the economy of a community, why not create specific programs in the community to better prepare and educate students to be proficient to genius level for that industry? If the community will ban together and work together and follow the plan created, their children will succeed! The African proverb applies: It takes a village to raise a child. My PhD dissertation in the country of Aruba taught me the power of community to preserve the island language and culture while providing a quality education to the nation. As an expert and authority on Language, Reading and Culture, I want to share what I know will work and facilitate successful programs for committed communities wanting a massive change for their children. Education and community and business together are the winning combination.
(TP) Who would be a great partner to work with? (DR) Partners are 1) the community themselves AND 2) local, regional, national businesses. We need a target outcome for the students. Who wants to grow? Who is able and willing to invest time, energy and money? That is who we MUST have as a partner. Funding is essential. And the benefit for the businesses, community and the economy will be worth every dollar/ rand/ baht/ krona/ ruble spent to make college and business come true for the community’s students. Anyone or any business/ corporation/ or life changer who wants to leave a legacy that works... (guaranteed success, audited financials, and a 10 year history of success by a fully trained, experienced and educated team of experts who have become the authority in this field) are a perfect match for these projects. Let’s bring hope and fulfillment to communities around the world! I invite the Family from Mega

(DR) We have a successful program because we found a specific community with a shared Hispanic background where parents said, “We need help to send our kids to college. We want our kids to have the American dream of College come true and to be more successful than we are.” With the full support of our families, we created the structure for disciplines for our students. We walk them through the steps of the applications, financial assistance, and matching universities and programs to their strengths and interests. We have 100% success for 10 years!
21
(TP) Why get involved in community outreach around the globe?
TP) What is the profile of the communities that you want to work with around the world? (DR) Communities around the world who are best suited for education and business “breakthrough” success are 1) united in a specific value, 2) honoring of the community’s culture-language-values, and 3)willing to sacrifice for the children / students to achieve more than their parents. 4) Parents are essential, and if there is not a strong family support system, the community must be willing to create secondary familial support for each student. It will indeed take the “whole village.” Change is hard! 5) So a strong commitment, hard work, trust in my team and I as we give direction and set up structures, and long term perseverance and consistent action must be 100%. We can start small with a handful of students. Then we can guarantee success and refine the programs with the first test groups. Two years later, the program can grow and success will be a simple following of the recipe, expanding each year with more and more students. The success of the first groups will fuel the flame for the next groups until success becomes the new norm for that community!
Dr. Herrera really sees the value in achieving a balance of education and fostering that entrepreneurial experience. There can be a balance and you can really help the next generation determine what will be best for them. After all, not everyone can be a business owner as there will be people who need to work in and be part of all the businesses. To find out more about Dr. Jennifer Herrera, you can search for her on Amazon, connect with her on social media, or through the Tucson International Academy website. It’s never too late to get involved and help foster the next generation.

IS AN OUTSIDE OPINION BETTER OR WORSE? Business coaching is becoming more and more popular in today’s society. The number of success stories through coaching in business has skyrocketed the past few years, and it has become evident that people need coaching to succeed. It’s not that you can’t do it on your own, but having a coach will allow you to learn from the mistakes that they made. They have been there, and they know what not to do. A coach will stop you from wasting time and money on strategies that do not work, and they will implement ones that do. Will the outside perspective be beneficial? When you are a business owner, real estate investor, speaker, or maybe even an employee for someone else, we often think that no one can really understand what we do. That is a very common feeling, and if someone can’t understand what you do, how will they be able to help you? It would be a challenge to have someone come in to work with me on growing and expanding my business if they first don’t understand my industry or business. Aside from understanding what you do, if you are going to work with someone, you would also want to make sure they have been successful in business. Here is why: business comes down to a lot of basic principles that can apply to anything. So if someone has been successful in business, they should have what it takes to help you...they can see the things you can’t! They also aren’t stuck in the day-to-day routines that you typically do. When we get stuck in our daily routines, it’s hard to see outside of the box. You need someone on the outside to look at the label, the tape, and the make up to see the things that you can’t. If you want an outside perspective, if you want to look at things differently than you have before, and if you want to get great results, you have to get someone who can see the entirety of what you are doing and help you make it even better.

Higher productivity rate – Having a coach to guide, teach and help you become bigger and better allows you to get more done, which evidently leads to more money and status. Everyone wants to be well known in business and highly successful; learning from a coach who has been there and is there still will allow you to get to that level. Most people find that with a coach, their productivity rate doubles because they aren’t wasting time on things that their coach knows won’t work. It is all good and well talking about the amazing things a coach can do for you, but you first have to ensure that when you do pick a coach, you are picking the right one. There are a few people out there who claim to be coaches and mentors, and an important thing to remember is to always do your homework before hiring someone.
Powerful Magazine February 2018
Fresh Ideas – Creativity can, and most often does, dwindle at some point. Whether you are trying to create a new product or a new marketing strategy, but you just can’t get those creative juices flowing, that is where your coach will help. You have someone to bounce ideas around with, and someone who can give you advice on what they’ve done in their business. You get that inside knowledge that your competition doesn’t have.
23
There are countless benefits one gets from coaching. Some of them include – Accountability - When you work on your own in your business, it’s very easy to become lazy and fall into the habit of staying where you are, but if a coach/mentor is present, they will always hold you accountable. It is crucial to have someone holding you accountable if you want to grow.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COACH: Research - If you think you have found a coach that you would like to invest in, do some research first. Google them, look at their social media, their history and experiences as a coach. Do they have any success stories, have they been in a magazine or in the press, are they well known? These are just a few questions to ask in the process, and don’t ever feel embarrassed to ask these questions to someone face to face; that will enable you to catch them on the spot, and you can judge for yourself if they are who they say they are. Find out if they have any testimonials you can read, or watch to see what their other clients have said about them. Relatable – A coach is someone you work with very closely. You open up to them and let them into your life. So when deciding which coach to go with, make sure it is someone you are comfortable with and feel a good connection with; someone who you don’t mind sharing personal or uncomfortable things with. Your coach is there to help and guide you. They need to know exactly who you are, so don’t be afraid to really let them in. Does your coach have a coach – Even though coaches are already highly successful and have ‘made it’, they also need to learn new strategies and stay on top of things, so having a coach who also has their own coach or mentor is important. With how rapidly the world and society is changing, ways of doing things change too, and your coach also needs someone guiding them through the changes.

Be ready for the investment – Hiring a coach is an investment, and with the right coach, ROI is massive. You have to be ready to take that step and make the investment, knowing that you will get your money back in results in your business. A lot of people are too scared to hire a coach because they do not want to spend the money. These are the same people who will stay at the same level, never growing. In order to grow, you need to invest. There are some people out there who are doubtful of coaching and haven’t been able to see what it can do for people and most often think it’s all just a way to take people’s money. Biba Pedron used to think like that. She was doubtful, but that was because she hadn’t unlocked the coaching world yet. Now, after having her own coaches and catapulting her business and success with them, she became a coach herself. Pedron was born in France and has been living in the USA for the last 15 years. When she first got to the states, she hadn’t heard of a coach or mentor before. She started her business in New York in 2003, and found herself surrounded by coaches, assuming that these people just wanted to take her money. It was easy to think that way because she ran a business in France before, so she thought she could do the same now. But Pedron is the first person to admit that she was absolutely wrong. After 2 years of struggling to get her new business in the USA off the ground, she caved and hired a business coach.
Pedron recently spoke on stage to over 2500 entrepreneurs, millionaires and celebrities at a huge business event in Los Angeles, California. She spoke on the same stage as Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Gene Simmons, Bethenny Frankel and many more A list celebrities. The audience was moved by Pedron through her inspiring journey of going from nothing to this successful international brand all whilst fighting cancer, twice. She is the epitome of someone who never gave up and kept fighting for what she wanted. Pedron knows first-hand what it is like to be stuck and not knowing where to go or what to do. She is a fantastic example of what coaching can do for a business, a brand and a person. Her success has catapulted and she has now become her own brand. If you are looking for a business coach, Biba Pedron is a wise choice. It’s all of these experiences put together that give here the knowhow she brings to her clientele. Biba Pedron has lived in multiple regions of the world, has successful businesses, and knows how to build a brand. That is exactly the type of perspective that she can bring to you, your business, and your future. To find out more about what Pedron does and what she can do for you visit her website at https://www.bibapedron.com/en/
Within the first year of having her coach, she doubled her revenue and went from working 7 days a week to 5. She worked less hours and made more money, and that was all possible through what her coach had implanted for her. Pedron had always said that she wanted to write a book, but she never had the time to do it. But only 3 months after she started working with her coach, her book was completed and ready to publish. That is what a coach does; a coach challenges you, pushes you, and helps you achieve the things that you have envisioned for yourself but haven’t made happen yet. After Pedron saw the results, she hired a mentor, and with the help of her business coach and her mentor, she was able to start and run 3 successful international businesses. Pedron admits, “As an entrepreneur, I don’t think I would be able to grow that fast without the help of very successful people, modeling what they do and adapting it to my businesses” Once Pedron had made a name for herself in the business world, people started flocking to her for advice and answers. Everyone saw how rapidly she grew her businesses and she was known as the “Connection Queen” They wanted to know how she did it. With the high demand, she became a coach and has never looked back. She went from paying other people to coach her, to getting paid to coach people. Today, Pedron is the author of Start Your Dream Business and Stop Pitching and Start Marketing, both of which have been #1 on Amazon best sellers. She is an international speaker, award winning business coach and marketing and mindset expert. She has featured on CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC and many more international media outlets.

Technology: helping kids grow or stunting their growth? So much debate is surrounding this topic. I am sure everyone has seen the meme circulating on social media with the two groups of kids standing side by side saying “glad I grew up like this, not this.” Showing kids playing outside next to an image of a group of kids all on their phones. It’s the go play outside vs. the go play on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Is there such a thing as too much technology too soon, or not? So is technology a good thing for the youth of today, or are they spending too much time on devices instead of good old fashioned playing with their friends? There have been arguments that exposing children to technology helps with creativity, but that it can also hurt. These same arguments have been made on the other side as well. That when kids don’t have a device to entertain them, they have to find a way to occupy their time, and as a result, enhancing their creativity. You can speak with parents, experts, physiologist or people in all areas that feel very passionately about one side over the other. It doesn’t really mean that someone is right or someone is wrong, but that doesn’t stop people from having their opinions. It also doesn’t stop companies from coming out with tech based solutions aimed towards kids, because there is always a lot of demand from the kids. I think if you ask the kids, they are all about the technology.

conversation about it’s latest creation for kids. If you are a user of Facebook, you know what Facebook messenger is. Well, you may or may not be aware of the fact that in order to be on Facebook or use Facebook messenger, you have to be 13 years of age or older. This is common across all social media, but can be worked around by putting in a different birth year. I’m sure we could all most likely identify someone under the age of 13 on a social media platform. Well, SnapChat has developed SnapKidz, for kids that are under the age of 13 to use, and now Facebook has Messenger Kids. Messenger Kids is only a few months old, but is already catching a lot of heat from people on how it’s not good for kids. The team at Facebook has stated in an interview with TechCrunch that a lot of research and develop-

Over a dozen organizations and 100 health experts are what make up the group calling for its removal. They feel it’s hard enough to navigate children in the digital age without having to worry about Facebook’s mass reach and possible persuasion from advertisers. The other large fear is that kids are not learning how to communicate in person and develop relationships. Some physiologist are claiming that the use of a messaging app like this are potentially stunting emotional health and growth, with more kids having more ways to hide behind a screen instead of making actual human connections.

Spotlight-Robin Booth Robin Booth is a successful entrepreneur having multiple businesses not only in South Africa, but also globally as well. We wanted to find out a little more about Robin and how he was able to to achieve so much success. Also wanted to discuss what it’s like to do business in South Africa, and get some insights on how the business works in this region of the world.
(The Powerful) How Long have you been an entrepreneur? (Robin Booth) As a young man, I used to keep finding myself in many entrepreneurial roles … and reluctantly so. For example, when I qualified as a school teacher, I realised that for me to be able to teach in the style I wanted to, I would actually have to open my own school so I didn’t have the boss looking over my shoulder. So I opened a school but all I really wanted to do was to teach, and not run the business of schooling.
(TP) What made you want to leave the “corporate” world and become an entrepreneur? (RB) The moment I chose to be responsible for any and all of the results I want in my life, the ‘traditional’ could no longer work for me: Traditional teaching, traditional schooling,

as I wanted.
(TP) What businesses do you own now? (RB) I have numerous businesses and partnerships here in South Africa and around the world. I have numerous online parenting courses and teacher programmes reaching over 12,000 students in over 150 countries. My one international company helps foreigners from around the world buy real estate property in the USA, without them having to use their own money or their own time. In South Africa, I have residential investing and letting business, as well as commercial land, use investing. I have numerous Airbnb properties for cash flow which we are currently scaling up and expanding. We just created a student housing project which has been incredibly successful and is showing returns I have not seen elsewhere so we plan to roll out more of those. I’ve partnered with a development company to do a development of land we have, which will either be a residential village or a shopping centre. And although most of the businesses I’ve mentioned are now on autopilot or managed by other team members, I choose to spend most of my time on coaching select entrepreneurs from around the world. In finding then strategizing their quickest and most successful path to wealth and success. I am also the founding director of the non-profit education organisation, Synergy Schooling, which provides teaching resources to teachers around the world.

(TP) Best thing about running a business based in South Africa?
(TP) Most challenging thing about running a business in South Africa?
(RB) South Africa is in a fairly unique situation in that it gives you the belief of being in a first world country, yet the reality that anything can actually happen here.
(RB) There seems to be an underlying attitude of entitlement in South Africa which translates into poor service delivery. For example I live in Cape Town, one of the world’s top tourist destinations… so you would think this city has built up a business network to service this industry. Our biggest challenge in setting up our Airbnb and short term rental business was finding a cleaning service that would work on a Sunday. Their response: “We don’t work on Sundays, so we suggest you don’t accept any new clients until Monday because that’s when we will be back to work.”
In business this means that you can create fairly accurate strategy plans, but you always have to factor in a backup plan in which everything could change in a moment, and you may have to start all over again. Successful South African business people plan well when things don’t go according to plan (like electricity no longer works, water runs out or labour goes on strike), they are very quick to change strategies and get back on track.

At the same time, this means opportunity. Any budding entrepreneurs out there… here is a great business to start!

(TP) How do you overcome challenges? Powerful Magazine February 2018
(RB) There is only one reason, and one reason only why we are faced with any challenge: and that is because we don’t have the solution for resolving it…. yet! So I can either complain about the challenge or spend my time and energy on creating the solution. Whether you believe your challenge can be resolved, or whether you believe it can’t be resolved, either way you’re right. I have worked with thousands of people to see that the only difference between those that solve the problem and those that don’t, is in whether they believe there is a solution or not. Someone who believes there is a solution will keep looking for it. And the person who believes there is no solution will stop looking early on and give up. Now some people would argue that there are some situations where there is no solution.. so what then? But here’s the thing. Those people who believe the solution is out there will keep looking for it and as they do, they will meet new people and explore many new ideas. Out of this, they often come up with many other incredible ideas that may help solve a bigger problem they are dealing with, and so actually get them where they want to go quicker. In my businesses when I am faced with a challenge, I get as much information as I can on what created that challenge, and then put things in place so that those challenges won’t come up again. So with each ‘failure’, I actually become exponentially more successful.
(TP) How did you know you would be successful?
(TP) Did you ever second guess yourself? (RB) I would often second guess the strategy I was working on, but I have never second guessed my ability to deliver what was needed. But what I have noticed is that there are many successful people out there who have very little going for them, except their ability to stay focused and their determination to be in action. I learned a hard lesson because I used to think that since I was smart and a quick learner, I would be successful. But success is the result of focus and action. When I applied this as my new strategy, my success increased.
(RB) I think in my case it’s knowing I will never give up. And that means that I will always keep looking for creative solutions to any problem and challenge I have. And with that strategy, it is inevitable that I will find a solution that will work. I will never bet on my strategy as I can always change that, but I’ll always bet on myself.

(TP) Advice for other South Africans who want to start a business?
Powerful Magazine February 2018
(RB) Traditional entrepreneurship seems to be a ‘hit or miss’ journey. Traditional entrepreneurship seems a lot about risks and passion. Traditional entrepreneurship seems to be about go big or go home. But it doesn’t have to be that way. It starts with a decision for you being willing to take 100% responsible for all your results, success and failures. And then it takes just one small step. And then another. Nowadays, there are a lot of resources out there that can guide you to find out what your natural strategy is to creating success and wealth. The moment I understood my path, things changed. It’s not a one size fits all. The more you know about your own path, the quicker and less riskier it will be for you to be a successful entrepreneur.
(TP) What keeps you motivated? (RB) When we are in our flow, we are naturally and internally motivated. If you find yourself dragging your feet or doing things reluctantly, its because you are out of your flow. So for me the question is always about “How do I get back into my flow” because then I don’t need motivation to drive my actions. My ‘flow’ and natural path to wealth and success is all about creative problem solving, coming up with systems that automate things, and seeing how to replicate things such that anyone can do them and yet still get successful results.
Attend the JT Foxx events, take notes even if it doesn’t make sense yet. Network with the people at his events. It’s easier to be an entrepreneur with a partnership than going all alone. Become one of the #familyfirst. This has been my biggest support in taking my business to the next levels. Keep investing in your own skills. Educate yourself. Get a coach who will push you to look beyond what you see or believe is possible right now. Whenever I am with JT Foxx, he always opens up a new vision of what is possible for me. Its then up to me to step into it.

(RB) I’m a big fan of partnerships. I could never do business around the world if I didn’t have partners. And finding those partners has come out of meeting them at business events, then building a relationship with them, and then only then asking, “How about we do business together”. I prefer to get the right people on the bus, and then decide where we want to go.

(TP) Advice for people from outside SA who want to do business in SA?
My greatest source of finding great partnerships from around the world has been through JT Foxx’s events. I used to weigh up how much it cost to go to his events around the world. Now I see how much it costs me in opportunities if I don’t go. And when you are presented with challenges, remember that the solution is out there, and each failure or setback is actually creating your next success.

WE ALL READ BOOKS... WELL AT LEAST WE SHOULD BE. Reading has been proven to sharpen your brain, expand your vocabulary, improve your memory, improve your analytical skills in additional to so many other benefits. After doing some research, we’ve put together a list of the best business books to read in 2018: ‘The CEO Next Door: The 4 Behaviors That Transform Ordinary People into World-Class Leaders’ by Elena L. Botelho and Kim R. Powell Based on an in-depth analysis of over 2,600 leaders drawn from a database of more than 17,000 CEOs and C-suite executives, as well 13,000 hours of interviews, and two decades of experience advising CEOs and executive boards, Elena L. Botelho and Kim R. Powell overturn the myths about what it takes to get to the top and succeed.
‘Leading Through the Turn: How a Journey Mindset Can Help Leaders Find Success and Significance’ by Elise Mitchell Most leadership books tell you how to set and achieve goals. This one is different. This one is written by a communications leader who’s as passionate about riding motorcycles as she is about running her business. Her name is Elise Mitchell, and she wants to tell you about her journey—from starting her own agency to building a world-class brand to enjoying the ride along the way. But mostly, she wants to talk to you about your journey.

THE 21ST CENTURY WOMEN’S MOVEMENT: IS THE ME TOO AND TIMES US MOVEMENT PUSHING US FORWARD OR SETTING US BACK? It’s a challenge to turn on the news, read a paper, or get a notification on an app without getting a report about another woman coming forward about an accused abuser. I say accused because the justice system in place is innocent until proven guilty and none of these have gone to court yet, so we are dealing with accusations. I want to set that straight, as I am not calling anything an accusation because I don’t believe it, but that would just be the correct terminology.
Mag_final.indd 40
There is a clear feeling of women empowerment, a sense of women feeling more confident and taking control. With the USA having a women’s march in January with record marchers, there is something happening in this latest women’s movement and that is very evident. However, we are here to talk about both sides, of what this movement is bringing to the forefront, and the impact it’s having in the world right now.

with claims as well. Most of the NBC team seemed very surprised, but we will never really know what happened behind the scenes. House of Cards on Netflix will never be the same without Francis Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, as he was immediately released by Netflix when his accusers came forward. When the tapes of Trump and Billy Bush were released, Bush was let go from his position. Charlie Rose, Mark Halpern, and Glenn Thrush have all lost their jobs. Others like Ben Affleck catching heat for not speaking up or doing something sooner. Then we have another large group of actors, celebrities, and comedians being accused of assault including but not limited to Jeremy Piven, Scott Baio, Brett Ratner, Aziz Ansari, and James Franco. Some of the account seems to be dates gone horribly wrong, a miss read, or possible an abuse of power.

What is Happening Now? There have been a lot of results from this movement in the aftermath of women speaking out against the men that have assaulted them. It has already been mentioned the amount of men who have lost their jobs, been removed from a project or movie didn’t come out at the last minute as a results. However, the more interesting this is what has been happening in society as a result, what do men have to say about it, and have their actions changed at all? It does seem that most men aren’t really sure what to do, or say, and more importantly what not to do or day. Women, have once again left men confused, which some might argue is what women do best. female co-star, he decided to donate the earning from that project to the Times Up movement under her name. The reported difference was that she was earning only 10% of what he was, according to online sources. That is a big difference, and he decided to do something about it. We also have women leaving their jobs when finding out they aren’t being paid equally. That is what Catt Sadler formerly of E! did when she found out her longtime friend and co-worker, who was male, was making about double what she was. According to her own personal blog they were doing about the same amount of work, and brought the same level of experience to the table which should mean around the same pay for their work. When it came time to renew her contract she countered for higher wages close to her male co-worker and was denied.
In Australia right now, Universities have classes to teach students about consent and making it very clear that nothing is to happen without both parties clearly expressing consent in the matter. As this is being discussed in the news, some were left feeling that its patronizing the students as this something that should be covered in elementary school.

GREAT MORNING HABITS CAN BE CREATED
Mornings can be hectic. Some of us may enjoy the start of the day, waking up early with our goals top of mind. Others, on the other hand, would do anything for an extra 10 minutes in bed. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, a good morning routine can dramatically improve your life. We are most productive when we first wake up, so setting yourself up with a system at the start of every day will also ensure your productivity remains throughout your day. Your routine does not need to be long, just effective. Here are some habits to implement in your morning routine if you’re not already: • First things first, create a to-do list the night before. We’ve all heard this before… it’s a no brainer. But how many of you actually include this step in your routine daily? When you see your tasks first thing, it will help you stay on track throughout the day. • Get energized. Whether that means taking a shower first thing, doing some yoga or going to the gym, or having coffee right away, you want to wake yourself up to have the most productive morning. • Tackle your hardest task first. We all have things in our daily lives we may not enjoy, but if you focus on getting that task completed and out of the way, you don’t have to spend the rest of the day worrying about it. • Fuel your body. Statistics have shown that people who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese, they have more stable blood-sugar levels, and they tend to be less hungry over the course of the day. If you’re not thinking about food all day, you’re likely to stay more focused and productive. • Prepare your outfit the night before. If you are someone who spends too much time deciding what to wear, pick your outfit out the night before. You’ll save precious time to do more produc tive things. • Read something. News articles, industry news, even just a book. It’s been said that Reading is strongly correlated to success factors, such as income and job position. • Don’t hit that snooze button! No matter how many times you hit the snooze button, you will eventually need to get up. So stop wasting time thinking you are getting more sleep and just wake up when your alarm sounds. • Get enough sleep. The real secret to a productive morning comes from the night before. Make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep your body needs.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS AND BUILDING A BRAND JT Foxx, the Worlds #1 Wealth Coach recently sat down with Bethenny Frankel, star of The Real Housewives Of New York, owner of Skinny Girl Margarita, recently added to the Shark Tank cast of Sharks, and highly successful business woman, about her journey to success, how she did it, the importance of never giving up, and being a woman in a heavily male dominated alcohol industry where Skinny Girl first got started. And of course, with Bethenny being a successful woman in business, JT kept the interview around women and how they are becoming unstoppable. Although Frankel might not have it all figured out, she has never given up and is always looking for the next opportunity to grow.

JT - You wrote a book called I Suck At Relationships. What inspired you to write that?
B – But that is something women say to themselves to make them feel better, they say men “can’t handle me”. JT – But what if you’re stuck in a relationship like for example, women come to an event and get inspired and excited and they start doing stuff, and their husband is here and then all of a sudden, they’re like ahhh then the husband can’t handle it and the women start thinking, well I have kids and now he’s not supporting me. So, what does one do?

JT – But we know most men are intimidated by you because you make more money than most men of them...

B – Well I did. I don’t know if I do anymore, but I used to suck at business, and then I didn’t suck at business. I used to think I sucked at business because I wasn’t in the right businesses or because I hadn’t hit it.
B – No! For people that are getting into relationships who are single, I will say unless the other person is doing some philanthropy work or something scientific, it’s really hard to bridge that gap, so getting into balance is hard. But when you are married, you have to make it work. JT – Women compromise more than men, and men are more one-sided. The man used to make more money, and now the women are skyrocketing. B – I don’t know if you know this, but women have more wealth than men, 12% more than men. That’s something most people do not know but it’s true. JT – Well I have been saying for a while that women are better at business than men. I find that women get that confidence that is often lacking, and they become unstoppable, do you agree? B – I do agree. I think that women are good at multitasking, managing, delegating and are more organized, and those qualities you learn from being a mom are great qualities to have in business if channeled. It’s not about the idea, it’s about who executes it best. JT – So I travel a lot around the world, and everyone in America knows you from the show, but for those who don’t know you or just know you purely from the show, who is Bethenny Frankel? What is your story? B – Well, I started off with a production company. Then I was the largest importer of pashmina. Then I went to school to be a natural food chef and had a wheat, egg and dairy free cooking company but couldn’t produce enough to get a huge manufacturer to manufacture the food. After that, I did the Martha Stewart apprentice and I really wanted the job but I came in second. JT – Why didn’t you win? B – Well, the girl who won was the kind of girl who fades into the background, does the job, and then becomes invisible. JT – So they were intimidated by you? B – I don’t say things like that. I don’t say that people were intimated or jealous. I don’t know, how could I know? I just didn’t win.

JT – Well look at the reality show, Housewives Of New York City, there is a lot of drama and jealousy that goes on there, but I don’t know how much of that is for cameras... B – It’s all real. I wouldn’t do it if it was not genuine and real. JT – So yeah, there is a lot of jealousy there... B – I guess, and I mean I am a lot and I wanted the job because I wanted to be the modern Martha Stewart. I wanted to democratize health, and I don’t think she wanted someone to be a predecessor, she just wanted someone to come in and fade out. But I did use that to try to get some awareness as a natural food chef; that’s all I wanted to be at the time. Then, I was in the Hamptons and someone approached me about a new show called, Manhattan Moms, and I was like well, A – I’m not wealthy and B - I don’t have kids. I turned it down because I wanted to be a chef. They kept pursuing me and pushing so I thought, well it is hard to get on tv and if it’s a disaster, no one will know. I was always the question mark character. They then changed the show to the Housewives, and I always wanted to have a signature cocktail, a healthy alcoholic beverage, and then I created this brand, Skinny Girl, in front of an audience. Beam Suntory approached me about buying the licenses for Skinny Girl, but I said no, because they are just an alcohol brand, and what if I want to do more with my brand. I told them they can have skinny girl when she is holding the drink (I have a logo of a girl holding a drink) and the martini shaker, so I own the brand skinny girl which people don’t realize. JT – Wow, incredible. Well before I take up all your time, I am going to hand over to Francie, she has a very important question for you.
As Francie started speaking, her mic cut out and stopped working. I want to take this opportunity before we carry on with the interview to talk about how well she handled the situation. She didn’t panic, she stayed calm and got the issue fixed. Whether you’re on stage, in a meeting, or even just having a business conversation with someone, you have to be able and ready to tackle whatever comes at you. If you find yourself in a situation where something goes wrong or doesn’t go as planned, you need to stay calm and react well. An important aspect in business is always be ready. Francie – Ok it’s my turn! The ladies are taking over, enough of the men. B – Yes! I like it!! Has anyone seen the last episodes of House of Cards when she says “My Turn” it’s like that B**ch was not kidding! Francie – Yes enough of the men. B – But what about all of the handsome men sitting here? Francie – Yes, but I believe we have more successful businesswomen in the room than we have men, we still love the men though. B – Yes, let’s also give it up for the men in the room! Francie – So Bethenny, as a highly successful woman in business, how important has PR and media been to really catapult you as a brand and take you to that next level? B – Oh my gosh, I couldn’t even put a value on it. The internet is great, and I am a person that has really used what is in front of me to make a success. Time management is the most important thing. I honestly say that time is more valuable than money. And you need to be able to stop and say, “this is not worth my time, I need someone else to do this for me”. Francie – And that is exactly what a PR company does. They do the work for you so you can put your time into other things and projects which really optimizes your time.

Bethenny Frankel is a woman who saw an opportunity, took it, ran and has never looked back. She has climbed to success by sticking to her guns, never giving up, and creating a brand that will last. She is the epitome of someone who started as one thing and ended as many, and women in business who are striving for her kind of success can take a page from her book. She has also allowed her team to grow with her, as she understands the importance of not being able to do it on her own. At one point while on stage, she acknowledges Megan, who is a member of her team that came with her to the event. Frankel then points out how Megan started with her as a assistant a few years ago, and as the business and brands have grown, her team has grown with her. She then points out how Megan is now in charge of marketing and brand development for her, and how someone to replace Megan as an assistant had to be found. If you then looked over a Megan, you could see that she wasn’t just there to watch and support, she was there for the branding and marketing element of the event. That means that she was capturing photos of Frankel on stage, and posting them to social media channels like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Then, later when Frankel was busy doing the meet and greet, she was there to add live moments to SnapChat and Insta-Stories, all in an effort to share with the social universe what Frankel is doing on a daily basis and help expose and grow the brand to the next level. So as important as you are in your business, and as important as it is to find ways to continue to grow, we can’t do any of it if we don’t have a great team of people around us. No one can do it all on their own, man or woman, doesn’t matter every single one of use needs help!
