While Staging Battle against Stand Your Ground Laws

Pastor Jamal Bryant and Congregation to Host Baltimore District AME Church Conference By Samuel Williams, Jr.

BALTIMORE, MD -- There is a definitive tone of excitement in the voice of Empowerment Temple African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church Senior Pastor Jamal Bryant when he talks about hosting the 2014 Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church conference scheduled to be held this month on his church’s campus located at 4217 - 4221 Primrose Ave. in Baltimore, MD. “The responsibility of hosting the event is exciting. And while it is sometimes overwhelming, it is an honor to be this year’s host,” Bryant said. “To serve as the site where the district’s future and direction for next year is determined is a great opportunity for our church.” The Baltimore Young People Department (YPD) meetings will be held April 19; the Baltimore Women’s Missionary Society 10 Visit us on

(WMS) will be held April 22; and Baltimore church-wide conference meeting will be April 23-25. For the complete schedule of the Second District conference schedule go to www.2ndamec. org website. But for Bryant, there looms ahead a far larger challenge, one on a national scale. Bryant is working to repeal the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law that exists in 23 states throughout the nation. Many states have enacted socalled stand your ground laws that remove the duty to retreat before using force in self-defense. Florida passed the first such law in 2005, generally allowing people to stand their ground instead of retreating if they reasonably believe doing so will “prevent death or great bodily harm.” Two young black men in Florida, Trayvon Martin and

Jordan Davis, have lost their lives by gunfire at the hands of men who invoked the “Stand Your Ground Law” in their defense. Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted. In the Jordan Davis’ case, a jury in Jacksonville found Michael Dunn guilty of attempted seconddegree murder for opening fire on three other teens in the same SUV as Jordan Davis -but deadlocked on the murder

charge against him in Davis’ death. Both shooters were white. However, in a juxtaposition of ruling, Marissa Alexander, the black woman who was sentenced in Florida to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot at a husband who was allegedly abusing her, starts her retrial in July 2014. Except now she may be facing up to 60 years in prison.

For Bryant, this is unacceptable. Prior to his role as a pastor, Bryant served as the director of the NAACP’s youth and college division and dealt with civil rights issues facing America’s black youth. “We are starting with Florida first,” Bryant said. “We are filing a petition with their state legislators with a goal of having

some action to remove the law by May 4 (2014). When you see disparity in the legal system in this instance, when white men are virtually walking away from murder charges while a black woman is facing the potential of severe prison time for just firing a warning shot in the air, I could not ignore not giving this whole issue legal redress.” n

The “New” Power Magazine For the past 24 years, The Power Magazine has been the voice of Baltimore’s African American Christian community and has spread its coverage and distribution firmly into the D.C. market. Over the life of the publication we have consistently and proudly given the African American church an outlet to promote their events and services to the community-at-large without missing one single-month of publishing and distribution. This April we will celebrate our 24th Anniversary with a new look, new business model and a more diverse and inclusive editorial line that embraces various spiritual and faith communities. As we begin preparing to celebrate our 25th Anniversary we want to share with our readers what your loyalty has positioned us to become. Currently we enjoy a loyal share of the market and we have tremendous potential for business growth and market expansion into the southern Maryland and D.C. regions. Our goal is to firmly expand our presence and reach into both regions by increasing our church participation and audience base. Our new direction is synonymous with our new business model and will allow us to serve our supporters and readers better. This means new board of directors and advisors, new look, a new digital presence, new content, new advertising products & resources, new publishing calendar and new distribution practices. We will expand our reach to embrace a more interfaith spiritual community of clergy, spiritual events and readership with a digital product accessible by a variety of platforms and mobile devices. We will also introduce Interfaith Hotspots, a WiFi network of church and spiritual centers providing free internet access empowering their surrounding neighbors. These networks will give community members instant access to issues concerning public health, public safety and public welfare and assist in your evangelical mission via the internet. This WiFi Network, the first of its kind, ensures that residents in the city’s most impoverished areas will not be left without important information or resources that hinder their quality of life. On behave of Rev. William Wingo and our entire staff, we humbly thank each church leader, their staff and congregations for 24 years of loyal support. We get to do all of this because you continued to support us over the years. Now, we get to give back to our community in a big way. Thanks again, for your continued support and staying plugged into The Power! Sincerely, Omari Bakari, Director of Business Development The Power Magazine Power Magazine n APRIL 2014 24th Anniversary Edition

Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

Displaced Needs Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. ~ Philippians 4:11 God will keep moving things round in our lives, placing events and people in our path, taking away objects and items and privileges, and orchestrating situations and circumstances around us until our focus narrows upon him and we realize that all we really need is God. Our self-worth is tied up in other people’s opinions and views of us. We think we need their approval, their permission, their consent and their love to be somebody. Our ego is wrapped around the experience of others as we vicariously seek victory and success. We place our hope in their progress and accomplishments and dare to think we will be pulled along the path of triumph just by association. We need others to win so we can win. We need others to love us so we can love ourselves. We need the surroundings of the material so we can feel secure. We have built walls of needs around us in order to define us and to tell us who we are.

We think we know what we need.

But God has a way of turning our minds to think his thoughts after him.

We think we need our favorite team to win to feel victorious. We think we need to succeed to feel good about ourselves. We think we need money to be secure. We think we need a great crowd of people around us to feel loved. We think we need an entourage following us to feel important. We think we always need to talk to be heard. We think we need to be pushy to be seen. What makes us think that material things will fill us up when the void in us comes from a deeper place than we can reach? Do we really believe that somebody else can make our lives full? How can we know that another career move or another location or another acquisition will satisfy our craving for accomplishment and contentment? God knows more than we know. He knows us best. He will take and strip and remove needs until we discover that any need, the most important need, our only need is really for him.

God is all we need. So simple. Power Magazine n APRIL 2014 24th Anniversary Edition

The Church Tea

March Snow and Cold: God’s Natural Remedy We had our share of snow this winter. The inclement weather gave me an opportunity to wear the ugly boots with no heels. We all have a set in the closet, you know, the ones that were so far back, we had to blow the dust off. During those snowfalls, I personally enjoyed taking a few days reconnecting with the family. Aside from the joy of reconnecting with the family, I personally enjoy spending quality time with my husband at our residence, which is always a good thing. Then I started thinking, in lieu of all the snow, I reflected just how God has a way of getting our attention. And while I heard so many people complaining about the cold temperatures and snow, I am compelled to share a few surprising benefits I observed about the cold weather. The recent severe winter temperatures, in a consecutive number of days, were so cold they actually cancelled the annual polar bear plunge at Sandy Point state park. Some supporters became irate because they look forward to this event. One of my dear friends, a woman of color, defied the elements none the less, and actually took that cold dip in the water. She even had it filmed. To this day I still look at her with amazement and awe. I have since learned a few fascinating facts about cold weather and the polar plunge. A swim in icy cold water may actually help the body suppress pain by producing a natural occurring chemical called “norepinephrine.” We all know, and doctors confirm it, that ice on a bruise reduces swelling and inflammation. This treatment is especially effective for sports injuries, falls, sprains and insect bites. I love the Lord for his way of providing a natural form of healing for His kingdom.

God, by blessing us with cold weather, has also provided a natural form of insect extermination as well. A variety of insect populations are reduced or killed when the temperature drops below freezing. I am especially glad, and please don’t cringe, but those worrisome bed bugs die during extreme temperatures. The cold plunging temperatures also eliminates those annoying stink bugs that seem to be everywhere in Maryland. God’s way of getting rid of them is so much better. As humans, our natural attempt is to smash them then suck them up in vacuum cleaner. The downside of doing this? It leaves the stench of a foul smell lingering. I believe stink bugs, fleas, ticks and mosquitoes may not be such a huge nuisance this year. Have you ever noticed how cold it is in the operation room? That’s because germs don’t thrive as well in colder environments. Lastly, and my favorite way God uses cold temperatures, is the way it helps wake up a particular type of fat called “brown fat.” It helps our bodies produce heat while burning calories more efficiently. Now don’t get me twisted, I’m really a sunshine and warm weather kind of gal. But I respect that God made cold weather for a reason. We can never fully appreciate the beautiful warm and sunny days until we know how we felt in the cold.
