Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
Have Your Own Baby! And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she has born unto Abraham. Genesis 21:9 How many times have you looked at your burden and thought: Maybe somebody else can carry this. How many times have you looked at your vision and tried to delegate the responsibility of bringing it to life to someone else. How many times have you thought about your assignment, your duty, your job, your dream and thought: Maybe somebody else can do this. Maybe somebody else can make this happen fulfill this walk this path…for me, other than me. You will get to a point where you realize that no one else is going to fulfill your destiny for you – but you. You have to have your own baby. You have to finish your own work. You must complete your own projects. Your burden is for you to carry. Stop depending on others to do it for you. Stop depending on others to carry out your visions. Dig deep into the well of potential that is yours and realize that God has put inside you all you need to do whatever He has given you to do. If it is to carry a burden, you may not want to carry it, but that does not mean that you cannot carry it. God has given you the strength to shoulder any load He puts on you and He is standing with you to help you. If you must face difficult times or confront difficult people, you have on the inside what you need to do it. Sarah had the capacity to receive Abraham’s seed. She just did not have the belief or the patience to wait for conception. Don’t be lazy in your faith or your actions. Don’t make excuses. Don’t back away from what you know you are to do. In the appointed time, if you persist and persevere and work hard, you will bear the fruit of your labor. Share your thoughts: juanitawingo@gmail.com; www.thinkonthesethingsbywingo.blogspot.com

Do You Know Your Heart?
Take the FREE HeartAware On Line Risk Assessment Every heart has a story to tell. Find out yours with HeartAware. When it comes to your heart health, to know your heart is to protect it! Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. Annually, about 1.2 million Americans suffer heart attacks, and close to a half-million of them are fatal. To protect your heart and help prevent a heart attack, St. Joseph Medical Center’s Heart Institute offers a free online heart risk assessment called HeartAware®. The quiz only takes seven minutes. “The HeartAware quiz helps identify risk factors that are concerning for heart disease,” says R. Stewart Finney, Jr., MD, chief of Cardiac Surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center. “Screening is all about trying to identify people who have a potential problem with their hearts, and then providing something that they, along with their physicians, can do to prevent or treat heart disease.” Preventive maintenance Dr. Finney calls this “preventive maintenance,” explaining, “It’s just like a car. You go to the repair shop, and the mechanic checks out your car. If your car needs repair, you need to address that right away for your safety.” Each participant who takes the online HeartAware quiz receives a personalized, confidential report on their current cardiovascular health, along with recommendations to take action to reduce risk. Those who score

in the medium to high risk category are offered a low-cost, $90 calcium score CT scan at St. Joseph’s Heart Institute to help detect heart disease. Clues for coronary buildup A CT scan with calcium scoring takes only a few minutes; results are reviewed immediately. Cardiac calcium scoring helps screen for heart disease in its early stages and helps physicians determine a person’s heart attack risk. The CT scan can detect buildup of calcium on the heart’s artery walls. If calcium is found, that may indicate plaque in the coronary artery. Once patients receive the right diagnosis, The Heart Institute at St. Joseph can help them get on the right medications and treatment. Dr. Finney has performed bypass surgery for several patients whose severe heart blockages were diagnosed thanks to the HeartAware quiz and calcium CT scoring. HeartAware – A Free Online Heart Risk Assessment Go to: www.SJHeartAware.com The HeartAware quiz takes just seven minutes. You receive a personalized, confidential report, along with recommendations to reduce your risk of heart disease. You’ll also find out if a calcium scoring CT scan may be recommended for you. For a referral to a cardiologist or cardiac surgeon, call 410.337.1216 or go to www.StJosephTowson.com/ Findadoctor.

Harbor Bankshares Corporation
From Austere Beginnings to a Future Prototype By: Rhonda Overby, Camera Ready, Inc.
Today, all that is a distant memory. Harbor Bank boasts seven full-service branches, and assets that have increased 100 fold to over $200 million. Its diverse spectrum of retail and commercial banking services rivals any banks. They include an extensive global ATM network, Certificates of Deposit, Individual Retirement and Money Market accounts, investment products, Visa and Master Cards, expansive specialty mortgage and business loan products and online Banking. The formerly non-technical Haskins says, “I talk about Internet Banking and interactive web sites so much now that staff ask if I’ve become some kind of technology geek. But, what I want them to understand in this technological age is that unless you’re embracing technology, you’re actually embracing extinction.” Harbor Bank has also embraced a broader customer base during its 30-year journey. While continuing to serve the minority community, its specialty has become commercial lending to all small to medium sized businesses (typically those with up to 100 employees, and revenues up to $25 million). Haskins says Harbor’s officers understand this market so well, they helped develop Maryland and Baltimore underwriting criteria for small business loans. When asked how Harbor managed to survive the financial crisis that has put so many financial institutions out of business, Haskins said, “by understanding the market, adhering to conservative banking guidelines, and by giving excellent customer service.” But not only did
Harbor survive, it prospered. When you consider the very narrow margins that commercial banks operate within, and the fact that Mr. Joseph Haskins, Jr. Harbor has to restrict non-minority investments, in order to maintain minority ownership and control, that kind of success is amazing. Haskins has reportedly turned down millions of investment dollars, over the years – actually limiting Harbor’s size, to maintain minority status. He vows that may change, however. “In order for minority banks to grow and meet the challenges of this global economy, they must be able to access the capital markets like any other financial institution.” If that means losing minority status, he says, “It’s better to have the existence of a financial institution that has the capacity to participate at some level in the minority community, rather than none at all.” Haskins’ ultimate goal for the bank, “I want people to see Harbor Bank as a prototype of the future community based, financial institution.”It appears its well on its way. Harbor Bank was the first community bank in the country to launch an investment subsidiary– Harbor Financial Services. In this full service, investment arm, customers build stock, bond and/or mutual fund portfolios, after a broker develops a personalized financial plan – a real asset to customers and the bank.
B lack History Tribu te
Harbor Bankshares Corporation, now one of the top ten African American owned and operated financial institutions in the United States – according to Black Enterprise Magazine, has indeed come a long way. Organizers struggled for nearly a decade to find local African Americans willing and able to invest the $2 million necessary to start a commercial bank. They eventually solicited the help of Harbor’s current Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Haskins, Jr. (then Chief Financial Officer of Coppin State College, and former New York banker). Two-and-a-half years later, in September 1982, Haskins and his colleagues officially began their dream, to fulfill the largely unmet needs of the minority community, in a three-room office in downtown Baltimore – Harbor Bank’s first branch.
Harbor Bank just won another coveted $500,000 Bank Enterprise Award from the U.S. Treasury, the only Maryland bank to do so in 2011. This award acknowledges Harbor’s success in incentivizing development and lending in challenged, urban markets. Haskins realizes however, that past performance is no guarantee for future results, “The ability to adapt to profitably meet the changing needs of the market you serve is at the essence of longtime survival.” He vows to continue working to keep himself and Harbor Bank relevant.
