Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

Deep Ditches

Make this valley full of ditches. ~ 2 Kings 3:16

Sometimes it helps to understand what you are going through. We can’t always see the hand of God at work in our lives. One moment life is good and the next moment we are going through painful experiences.

God doesn’t always give explanations, but he will give directions. The steps we take following those directions are a walk of faith. God told the people to start digging ditches. There were to be many of them. The valley was to be full of ditches. We don’t know the condition of the soil in that valley. There had been no water. But water was coming. If God days make ditches, there is a purpose. That purpose is preparation. There was no sign of water. Yet God knew water was coming. He was going to send it and he wanted the people to prepare to receive it. When we are being prepared for blessings, we are treated like the ground that must be dug up when ditches are made. The instruments used to make ditches must be hard and sharp. God will use hard sharp instruments on us to prepare us to receive his blessings. As in the valley, the more water to come, the more ditches had to be made. So it is with us. The more blessings to come, the more prepared we have to be. God will use anything and anyone to prepare us. Circumstances, disappointments, lack, limitation, hurts, humiliations, injuries, people or places can all be instruments in the hand of God to prepare us to receive his blessings. The directions were to make the valley full of ditches. The more water coming, the more ditches had to be made. The more ditches, the more water could be contained. The more blessings coming, the deeper the preparation has to be in us. The more penetrating the preparations, the more blessings we can contain. This is what the hand of God is doing in you. He is digging ditches to prepare you to receive his blessings. It can make you feel like you are not living right, like you have done something wrong or like you are being persecuted. You have not done anything wrong. You are being prepared to receive a multitude of blessings and the ditches must be deep. Hold on and let God work. You will receive in the end. And it will be more than you can contain.

Christian Voting Power

The

race is underway for who will position themselves for victory in the Maryland June Primary Elections. We at Power Magazine pose the following question: as Christians, should a political Party or candidate outweigh our Christ-consciousness at the voting polls? The answer to that question will probably stir great debate considering the role the church has historically played in the voting process – particularly where Black voters are concerned. Nonetheless, some very important issues will be on the various platforms ranging from taxation, healthcare, education, employment, to include medical marijuana as well as the decriminalization of marijuana and anyone of the six candidates may present information that is skewed to sway our vote. Historically candidates seek the support of the church going voters from pulpit endorsements to win elections and move into public office. Prior to Kennedy we represented the swing vote for the Republican Party and since Johnson we have been the swing vote for the Democratic Party largely from

the influence of the clergy. In both cases our voting patterns have been influenced by the pulpit and rarely by committed or accountable representation. Our voting block has not been maximized as a result of our loyalty to particular political parties and influence from the clergy. Today’s candidates, like those historically, rarely earn our votes because we have become card carrying party members that never demand their accountability. Religious folk make up 41.8% of Maryland’s population and in 2014 Christians should become more “politically mature” and recognizing that, through unity and nonalignment, we could be the swing vote in the coming elections and elect candidates who would be attentive to our concerns as Christians. What does this mean? It means that as Christians we have a bloc of votes of our own, and it is left up to us to determine who’s going to sit on the city council, state legislature, the senate and congress and in the Governor’s seat in Annapolis. If you would like further information, please call our office: 410-539-8886.

Black History Month & Baltimore’s Black History African Americans have been playing an important role in the history of our nation since colonial times. Baltimore has played a large part in that history, and this page is aimed at helping you learn about and visit some of the places in Baltimore where history has unfolded. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, noted historian, author, world traveler and Harvard Ph.D., is known as the Father of Black History. It was his dream of seeing Black History recognized in mainstream America that led him to establish the second week of February as Negro History Week. As an historian, Dr. Woodson saw February as a significant month in the history of Blacks. The second week of February was specifically

chosen to include the birthdays of both President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States, issued the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in 1863. Frederick Douglass, born into slavery, managed to escape from slavery and had the courage to speak out against racial injustices. He served as advisor to President Lincoln during the Civil War and published the North Star, although he is best known for his autobiography. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. While there are always events scheduled in Baltimore to celebrate Black History month, you can learn about Baltimore’s history any time of the year, as well as the stories of the people who helped make Baltimore the place it is today. Events: Celebrate Black History Month at the B&O Railroad Museum February 1-28, 2014 http://borail.org The B&O Railroad Museum opens a new African American exhibit that celebrates the contributions of African Americans to the railroad industry. Learn about the men and women who filled vital jobs along the B&O Railroad’s line and understand how significant social issues, such as segregation, affected railroading. New exhibits focus on African American passenger travel during segregation and chefs and waiters who worked on B&O dining cars.

James Earl Reid - History Maker Sculptor, Baltimore, MD It was once said that you can always tell when you are in a great city by the statutes and monuments around town. Baltimore then is among the greatest accept when it comes to sculptors celebrating African American history and culture. We thought it would be good to talk with a native of Baltimore sculptor, James Earl Reid, about the art of building great monuments in sculpture. James Earl Reid, after being inspired at his Cherry Hill junior high school started developing his sculpting skill at Southern high school. James did the basic work studying and honing his craft. The difference he says were the long hours practicing and studying his arts. His high school art teacher, Allen Kuzmicki, paved the way for Reid to position himself to study his arts further. Reid would continue with private lessons paid by Kuzmicki to study with his mentors John Bannon and Joseph Sheppard. After completing undergrad at MICA, and then going on to earn his Masters from the University of Maryland College Park, Reid began working professionally as an artist and a career teaching art. Reid believes that the Importance and perpetuation of Black History has evolved from that which Carter G. Woodson inspired to celebrate. Reid says the celebration of Black History month is ingrained into his consciousness and work. Most of his work is influenced by and an expression of afrocentricity.

Reid declares he was created to do this type of art work and states that he is an artist of the people and for the people who subscribes to the philosophical precept of French Algerian philosopher Albert Camus that the artist must serve suffering as well as beauty. His art work takes him deep into the subject so that his work is an exhibition elevating the magnificence of the subject such as the Billie Holiday monument on west Lafayette and Pennsylvania Ave of Baltimore. The Billie Holiday monument is a first class presentation well deserved by the community it resides in and the city of Baltimore. The granite pedestal is memorialized by the tragedy of our history with the “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child” impressions as well as the symbolic crow eating the gardenia. The Holiday monument is housed in an open air museum, according to Reid, as a centerpiece to uplift the entire community. Reid is very passionate about his craft and works very hard at being the best there is.

The Church Tea Confessions of a Valentine’s Day Grinch Yes that use to be me. After many years of marriage. Valentine’s Day was just another commercialized attempt to get my husband to spend money. In fact, Valentine’s Day is my beloved Grandmother’s birthday as well as Frederick Douglass. So every year I choose to spend that entire day with her. Never giving importance to just another day but .......Ahhhh! Life has a way of showing you what’s really important. God is love and Love is central to our existence. According to renowned author Dr. Gary Chapman, the five emotional love languages are words of affirmation, Quality time, physical touch, gifts and acts of service. I am officially in the “Show me club” bring the real flowers, money created flowers, wine, and show tickets. And yes I want the $100.00 box of Godiva Chocolates even if I just nibble on each piece. Thank God for children who don’t mind eating the other half. A few toothaches, dental bills and unwanted pounds later.

where he will perform his famous love ballads. I suspect when he sings “I just wanna stop for your love”, I’ll squeeze hubby’s hand a little tighter and soak that song in. So ladies get the red shoes out. Guys find that expensive red tie and don’t be the grinch that I was for so many years. Be sure if you give your pastor a Valentine’s card it has a real monetary love offering in it. Keep those blurred lines clear and support their ministry. They already have enough temptation. If your pockets are a little deeper Kanye West will be performing at the Baltimore arena on Valentine’s Day. It’s A sure bet Ms. Kimmy will be with him. That’s gonna be a good concert. In the meantime, thank you for all the positive emails. The shout outs to your pastors and the invites to your church events. I love reading your email. Join me on Facebook and until next time “It’s all about love” Email me: TheChurchTea.power@gmail.com

The chocolate looks better in the box. This month my Valentine will be taking me to Gino Vanelli’s concert
