Elizabeth Lange with the idea to found a religious congregation for the education of African American girls. She no longer needed to keep locked up the deepest desire of her heart. For years she felt God’s call to consecrate herself and her works entirely to Him. How was this to be? At the time black men and women could not aspire to religious life. But now God was providing a way! On July 2, 1829 Elizabeth and three other women professed their vows and became the Oblate Sisters of Providence. It was her deep faith which enabled her to persevere against all odds. To her black brothers and sisters she gave herself and her material possessions until she was empty
of all but Jesus, whom she shared generously with all by witnessing to His teaching. In close union with Him, she lived through disappointment and opposition until God called her home, February 3, 1882 at Saint Frances Convent in Baltimore, Maryland. Mother Mary Lange, OSP is currently a candidate for canonization by the Catholic Church. At present Mother Lange is a considered Servant of God. Her Sisters still continue her legacy by continuing to teach and do pastoral work in Baltimore, Miami Beach, Buffalo, and Costa Rico. Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
Think On These Things Whatsoever things are true. Philippians 4:8
I am not going to stop shining just because my light hurts your eyes.
Some people don’t know what to do with silence, just like some people don’t know what to do with time.
We’ve got to take the risks offered now by God.
We worship God in our circumstances – not to escape from our circumstances, but we worship God in our circumstances to get to the reality of who he is in our circumstances.
When there is nothing left to do – there is God.
If you’ve been blessed with vision, do not look down on those who cannot see. Instead, let the brightness of your vision shine before them and light their path.
If God puts you in a dark place, be the light.
Walk with confidence, and don’t be afraid to step on the cracks. You might find buried treasure under your footsteps. Power Magazine n FEBRUARY 2015

Dr. Logan’s credentials include: a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College; a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology; a Master of Theology from Emory University; and a Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. While attending Candler, he served as president of the Black Caucus and was instrumental in establishing a Black Church Studies Program, and recruiting Rev. Dr. Robert M Franklin, as it’s first director. As a Pastor and Community Organizer for nearly thirty years, he has coordinated national events and facilitated Visioning Sessions, Annual Conferences, District Meetings, Leadership Retreats, Re-organizational Strategic Planning sessions and Plenary Sessions. A child of the civil rights era, Dr. Logan was profoundly affected by the voices of tremendous luminaries such as Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In fact when preparing for undergraduate school Dr. Logan only applied to and was accepted by one school, Morehouse College. When a thirteen year old boy named Devin Brown was gunned down by an LAPD officer, on February 6, 2005, Dr. Logan, along with other faith and community leaders co-founded a grassroots organization named community call to action and accountability (CCAA). CCAA was a grassroots movement to stop police brutality and black on black and black on brown violence in Los Angeles. This CCAA movement resulted in Mayor James

Hahn changing the “use of force” policy to make unlawful an officers shooting at moving suspect vehicles unlawful. Further, on January 31, 2006 the Los Angeles Police Commission, ruled that the LAPD officer Garcia’s shooting of Devin Brown as “out of policy”. Finally, the efforts of CCAA encouraged the extension of the Federallymandated consent decree designed to enforce policy and practices reform in the LAPD. A proponent of just immigration reform Dr. Logan hosted, at Bethel AME Church, some of the initial organizing meetings for the first May Day march in 2006. He has travelled the country Currently, Dr. Logan has been working with the hotel workers rising, airport workers united (UNITE HERE Local 11), (L.A.A.N.E. Los Angeles Alliance For A New Economy) construction workers, and Fresh and Easy access to healthy foods/grocery, the Fight For $15 fast food workers campaign, Los Angeles Black Worker Center, in efforts to improve access to healthy food choices and gain economic justice and benefits for African American workers in particular, and all workers in general in these related industries since 2004. A voracious consumer of non-fiction audio books, Dr. Logan is focusing this passion by crowdfunding for and developing the Black Press Audio Digest, a service which provides on demand audio versions of African American newspapers worldwide. Rev. Dr. Melvin Jackson-The Journey By Dr. Barbara J. Watties Dr. Melvin Jackson is one of six children born to the late McKinley and Louise Jackson. He is a native Baltimorean and a graduate of Baltimore City Public School System. “Pastor Melvin,” as he is affectionately called, loves the Lord and he values education. He holds several degrees including an Associate of Arts Degree from the Community College of Baltimore, a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from Morgan State University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. In June 2014, he received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio. Dr. Jackson’s journey into ministry began in May 1999 after kissing his wife, Patricia Jackson, goodbye in morning as she left for work and by the end of the day she was in a coma. A few days later she passed. Dr. Jackson stated, “My daughter and I were left to deal with this devastating tragedy. This was truly a test of our faith. My daughter had loss her mother, and I had loss my wife of 27 years. I reminded my daughter how her mother wanted her to finish college. When she returned to college I was left to struggle with the question why? I was

constantly asking God why? Why would you do this to us? My grief became a part of my personal journey.” Then God planted a scripture in my heart, it was Mathews 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Following God’s Message, I attended a TD Jakes Men’s Conference in Charlotte, NC. It was such a spiritual gloriously high time in the Lord with 20,000 men in attendance. Though strangers when we arrived, the presence of the Holy Spirit created a bond of fellowship among the men. It was at the conference that Donald Lawrence sang his song, “It’s Your Season.” Then God spoke to me “it is time to go forth.” It was then I accepted my call into ministry. There is a song you will often hear me line the words to before I preach, it is “Precious Jesus How I love You.” That song was sung by my daughter at her mother’s bedside as she passed. After God’s call, I worked, went to school, studied, and ministered to the people. After 25 years of work, God took me off my job and instructed me to finish my studies in seminary. When I asked God, “How am I gonna make it? And He said, “I will provide.” During my sojourn, He has been true to His word.

After many years of studying and spending time in ministry at church, I asked God, “Will I be alone the rest of my life? He said, “no.” I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life (Deut. 30: 19). Shortly after that God showed me Dorethea Better. After that first meeting it was her patience with me that melted into my spirit. I realized that she was the helpmate that God had chosen for me. I finally allowed God to transform my tragedy into triumph. I had always given so much I had to learn how to receive what God had purposed for me. Graciously receiving the blessings of God, I married Lady Dorethea Jackson and we have one son, Donald Chambers, one daughter, Tunia Hammonds, one son in-law, Husani Hammonds, three grandchildren, Kayla and Aiden Hammonds, and Donald Lee Chambers III. Praise God! With Lady Jackson at my side, God has healed my broken heart and bound up my wounds. That’s what God’s love can do. Still, while working through my private circumstance, God kept speaking to me saying, “You have no control over how someone else conducts themselves, but you do have control over how you react to the situation and I hold you to a higher standard.” God kept saying to me, “Keep love in your heart, in spite of others, because love conquers all.” What I discovered as I yielded by
fasting, praying and lay prostrate before God, is that God had to teach me some things about humility and love. With that discovery pressing on my heart, while following God’s purpose for me, and with constant prayer for directions, Christ Church & Ministries, was birthed into my spirit. With the Spirit guiding me on Sunday, January 4, 2015, in the Chapel at Milford Mill United Methodist Church in Pikesville, Md. over 100 attendees were on hand for the first Sunday of praise and worship. Several local Pastors, musicians and vocalist were also in attendance. As an attendee, this writer witnessed the fellowship flowing from the waiting congregation at the birthing of the new Christ Church & Ministries, which was clearly humbling to its founding Pastor, Rev. Dr. Melvin Jackson. Pastor Jackson began the service by pouring his heart out with the following message: “I love every one of you and you can’t do anything about it.” The service continued with the musical selection “Oh How I Love Jesus,” rendered by Dr. Harrison Johnson. A powerful invocation referenced to the power of the steps that have been ordered and placed in the belly of Pastor Jackson’s spirit, steps that no man can put asunder. During this time the influence and strength of the church began to be felt with the playing

and singing of the old Saints song “Lead Me - Guide Me,” causing many to stand, wave their hands and sing along with the heavenly sound of the organ. The reading of Ps. 27 added much joyful cadence to the mission and vision, of the church, as stated in the program, followed by the joyous singing of “Every Praise,” rendered by Dr. Harrison Johnson and Company. Pastor Jackson gave a brief introduction of Rev. Marlon Tilghman, Pastor of Milford Mill United Methodist Church, whom he stated opened his heart to allow us to use the chapel to fulfill God’s vision. To this may I add; only the Lord could have opened up this incredible and unusual door of opportunity. Pastor Tilghman, in response, stated how moved he was to see how many came out to support Pastor Jackson as he embarks upon this journey of commitment. He further stated that his initial vision was that the chapel was to be filled with his ministry. But as he looked out at the overwhelming congregational support for Pastor Jackson he said, “all I can say is to God be the glory.” The introduction of First Lady Dorethea Jackson, “my better half,” by Pastor Jackson, was met with much warmth. The First Lady spoke of being overjoyed with the love and support she and

Pastor had been receiving. She also referenced, and fittingly spoke, from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. However, her overall message was, “we want to make this a very intimate, close worship time. We pray God will show us how to do it. As we continue to follow the Lord and give him all the credit, we believe the best is yet to come!” At this time the congregation joined in singing “The Lord Is Blessing Me.” Following the selection Pastor Jackson welcomed all visitors, which by the way was almost the entire church congregation. He then acknowledged all visiting ministers and with a radiant smile on his face he held up his hand making the International Love Sign which was acknowledged, by the congregation, to which he responded, “May God show each of you many blessings, joy and peace today.” The time for giving was well orchestrated as the service continued to flow with the melodious singing of Sister Pauline’s testimonial rendition of “Pass Me Not Oh Gentle Savior.” Deacon Tommy Roberts also gave a stirring rendition of “Lead Me - Guide Me.” Their emotional and jubilant solo vocals were performed with fervent enthusiasm, vigor, and spiritual inspiration, with much ornamentation which brought the congregation to its feet and tears to the eyes of Pastor Jackson.

As he approached the pulpit, demonstrating much reverence, Pastor Jackson greeted the congregation with “my heart is bubbling over. Your presence lets me know that Christ Church & Ministries is real and that we must be serious about what Christ has charged us to do.” Using Philippians 3: 13-14 as his Theme, “I Press,” his message reflected on all the circumstances that led him to this part of the journey. The fellowship then communed, as one body, as they broke bread together followed by the ushers’ victorious march of praise. Finally, when the invitation was extended, over 20 people accepted the opportunity to unite with Christ Church & Ministries. Pastor Jackson rose to his feet stating, “As I reflect on this part of the journey I must say that it has truly been an intense labor of love. But I could not have stayed on course without the love, support, encouragement and most of all the fervent prayers of so many people. Through the “flash flood” of tears and the power of prayer I’ve finally come to understand that this journey was God’s way of giving me permission to be who I am and to show me where I am in my journey. To God be the glory, I am now able to enjoy the planted seeds of a new beginning
and new possibilities as they take root and emerge from the soil of my soul. Today as I look out the window of my circumstance I see a brand new landscape that causes me to reflect on how the Apostle Paul urges each of us to look beyond our circumstance. Even though I was not fully prepared for this part of the journey it was my strong faith that kept driving me into the paths of righteousness and forgiveness. Through all of this, God has truly been my gauge constantly replacing my hurt with hope. With a new view of faith my tears have been transformed. Like the paralytic in Marks’s Gospel, I’ve taken up my mat and have begun to walk into my destiny. I have accepted and I am doing what I believe is the Will of God. Now, with a clear conscious, I can look beyond my human sight and look through the lens of deity as I ask God to Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.” Jeremiah 17:14 Because, Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.” 2 Samuel 22:37 Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. 2 Corinthians 9:15 To pastor Jackson this writer says “Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.” 2 Chronicles 15:7

US Motors Changing Lives One Car At A Time What does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul? A very significant question found in the 8th chapter of Mark. It seems to be ever so fitting in today’s society where greed is robustly present. Everyone seems to be focusing on having more and making more but forgetting to stop and give thanks for what we have already achieved. We’ve forgotten about our neighbor that God told us to love like ourselves. We’ve become so caught up on materialistic things that we can’t even enjoy precious family time anymore. We’ve become more concerned about how many friends and followers we have on social media rather than how many family members and friends we have lost touch with. We are losing our power in search of money and fame. It’s for this very reason that we’re reminded of this question recorded in the gospel of Mark. It’s a reminder not to lose your soul chasing the things of this world. Don’t allow greed to block you from your destiny. Your destiny is far greater than anything money can buy. The truth of the matter is that once you identify your destiny, chasing money becomes a thing of the past. This is why US MOTORS has been set apart from other used car dealerships. They have found their destiny in the automotive industry … Changing peoples’ lives one car at a time! Regardless of a customer’s credit and regardless of the amount of loss the dealership has to take on a deal, they want to empower people to have reliable transportation. THE CHURCH TEA
HISTORY BEGINS AT HOME
Honor your father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; Eph 6:2 It takes a village to raise a child but it takes an entire family to care for an aging parent. Caring for an elderly family member can be challenging. Especially, if there is no support in place to reinforce your strength on a daily bases. The roles have been reversed, and often there is no rest for the weary. As a caregiver you may have a parent that is semi-independent, stubborn and cantankerous. Arranging meals, doctor’s appointments and overseeing daily activities can seem overwhelming. So, keep in mind that this is a “labor of love.” And consider yourself blessed to be of service to a parent. As we care for the elderly we are teaching our own children how to care for us in the future. If they still live in their home go the extra mile to maintain the repairs and keep up the housekeeping. If they are currently in a nursing facility the importance of frequent visits cannot be overstated. Especially, if your parent suffers with Alzheimer’s or dementia and cannot even acknowledge your presence. Be sure to let the facility staff know that your love and sense of commitment transcends the ravishing effects of that disease.
There is such a sense of purpose and positive benefit to caring for a parent. First of all, it’s the sense of giving back to someone who cared for you. Then the knowledge that your parent has excellent care is indescribable because it’s coming from you. Lastly, before you give care please care for yourself. Pampering yourself and being well rested is never selfish, it’s crucial. Until next time, “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.” 1st Timonthy 5: 17. Be sure to listen to the Power Magazine hour with Rev. William Wingo and yours truly, on Friday’s from 12:00 to 1:00. To God be the Glory!
