Spiritual Song Artist Myrna Summers said Mothers must teach Children to be “Peculiar” by Samuel Williams, Jr.

GLENN DALE, MD. — Exodus 19: 5 says: “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people, for all the earth is mine.” Spiritual song artist Myrna Summers, who serves as Minister of Music at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church in Glenn Dale, MD. said mothers in the 21st century face a much stiffer challenge when raising their children than when she grew up in the mid-20th century. In a world where true spirituality can sometimes appear watered down, women of faith must learn to teach their children to be “peculiar.” “Our children should be a testimony when they walk with people in the world,” Summers said. “They should stand out, be different in behavior, dress and attitude. But with all of the influences our young people face, this is a difficult task at times.

They should appear peculiar in a God sense. We are supposed to be peculiar, supposed to be viewed differently, stand apart in how we interact with the world, but sometimes we simply don’t come across that way. It weakens our testimony as the world views it. And we as mothers must understand, our children are a part of our testimony.” Summers grew up in the Church of God and Christ (COGIC) denomination where there was zero tolerance for sin behavior among youth. According to her, as a child, her mother limited their exposure to worldly influences and much of her time was spent in the church. “We had very little recreation time back then, we were being taught to learn about God, to live godly and had very little time for worldly activity. With the advancement of technology and the wide array of social activities out there today, like social websites and the like, there

are too many opportunities for the worldly influence to invade Christian life. That influence is harmful to our youth. What was considered sin in my day is simply accepted as part of life sometimes in our daily spiritual walk today.” Summers raised two daughters, Kadada Segears (age 35) and Keala Maynard (age 32), and as a mother had to find the balance of raising her children in a godly manner while allowing them to participate in worldly activities without compromising their faith. It was not an easy task. “My daughters had no problem going to clubs but I believed God’s people should not go on the enemy’s territory unless you are promoting the Lord. This caused some discomfort when I tried to convey my position but as they grew older, I think they finally understood such influences are not always good.” Summers said God’s law is not as prevalent in today’s society as was in days of old. “In my generation, youth behavior was measure according to God’s law and commandments. Mothers and families as a whole should get back to that way of thinking. Does what their children participate in today fall in within the laws God has laid out for us? What is missing in our society is a

a family unit where children are being raised by saved parents. Parents who not only know God’s laws but who truly fear God’s word.” Summers said mothers must spend more time with their children. “Mothers, and parents for that matter, sometimes work long hours or two jobs to earn an income to take care of their families,” Summers said. “Unfortunately, this sometimes causes kids to raise themselves. As a result, worldly influences get in and babies are having and raising babies. When this happens, and they have not been taught God’s ways, the family structure struggles.” The spiritual songstress said mothers must become more Godconscious on a personal level in the 21st century and that spiritual influence will trickle down to their children. “Parents are doing the right thing by bringing their children to church to hear God’s word but the preacher cannot do it by himself,” Summers said. “The mothers must practice and teach the fear of God daily in their homes.”

Power Magazine recognizes great Mothers of Faith with JAZZ Dr. Jasmin “Dr. Jazz” Sculark, The Daughter of Thunder, is a nationally and internationally known Pastor, Teacher, Author and Evangelist, relocated to Maryland. Dr. Jazz has been named Sr. Pastor at Jericho City of Praise in Landover, Maryland. What is one scripture you draw from as a mother of faith? “I think of Proverbs 31 and what I call the Five Star Woman. She gets a star from her husband, she gets a star the community, she gives herself a star, God gives her a star, and she gets a star from her children. Her children rise up and bless her. And that’s an inspiration that as a mother you live – whether they are your spiritual or biological children – to hear them rise up and bless you.” 8

What do many people not know about Dr. Jazz? “I am a person who loves life … I have a whole private excited life, about golfing and walking my dog ... I was born in a small, poor, drug infested village (in Trinidad). And yet God brought me out of that ... And I have just been faithfully serving God wherever He assigned me.” How has your upbringing prepared you for your assignment? “I came from a poor home. So I don’t take things for granted. It doesn’t take a whole lot for me to thank God. I don’t have to have cars and large houses and clothes to tell God thank you. I am just appreciative for running water, for a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and a warm bed to lay my head in. And I am grateful to God for that.”

“It also helps me to be mission minded. When I came here, God told me that I was going to be a missionary to America. Most churches in America send missionaries to other countries … and I am coming into this country to share a gospel message.” How have you seen mothering change, and what are some of the new challenges of mothering in this new generation? “Mothers are becoming younger every year, it seems. And so you have young girls that have not even become women or ladies yet and are now having to raise children. It’s like you have two kids in the house, and one is trying to be the mother. Another challenge is having to deal with the pressures of working, as more women are in the marketplace working. It’s a challenging season, and that’s why it’s so important for the church or the faith community to help meet those needs.” What Word of Wisdom can you leave for mothers today to better instill faith in our children?

by how you live. Children are always looking at you. You can tell your children the importance of prayer, but until they see you put in. It’s more about living the life in front of your children.” … “Demonstrate love.”

Tell us about your son. I have no biological children. I have an adopted son, Elder Devin Jeffers. He is a son in all rights.

How can we hear more from and reach Dr. Jazz? Dr. Jazz is on The Word Network every Monday at 8:30 am EST, “Your Best Day Yet”. Also stay in touch with her through social media: iamdrjazz on twitter, iamdrjazz on facebook , iamdrjazz on instagram, and her website www.iamdrjazz.org. Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

The Promise Comes Late And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said. ~ Genesis 21:1 What you are waiting for will come late, but it will come. What you prayed for in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s will come upon you in your 70’s, 80’s or 90’s. You will be older, tired, frustrated, and perhaps well beyond belief. But the promise will come because of its very nature – a promise. You’ve been waiting a long time to see what God has promised, to experience what God has sent, to know the fulfillment of his Word. Sarah will tell you. The promise will come. pass.

The prophecy that you received 10, 20, 30, years ago will come to

Let nothing move you from the place of belief: not age, not infirmity, not situational drama, not people, not unseen foes, not time or distance or place. Nothing. Stay in your faith. If the promise was spoken, you will receive it. Nothing will stop it from coming. No instability, no disobedience, no misperception, no mistake, no unbelief can stop the promise of God from unfolding in your life. All things will work for you, with you, in you and around you for your good while the promise just keeps coming. Things may work against you, but they cannot prevail against you to keep the promise from you. God’s Word is sure and secure. If he said it, it will come to pass: your healing, your work, your future, your movement, your position and your possessions. In God’s time and in God’s way, what God has spoken he will do. Rest in this knowledge. Rest in this truth. Rest in God’s timing.

The promise comes late, but it comes. Power Magazine n MAY 2014 24th Anniversary Edition

FAMOUS MOTHERS IN THE BIBLE Eve: Wife of Adam Eve was the first woman and the first mother. Without a single role model ormentor, she paved the maternal way to become “Mother of All the Living.” She and her mate Adam lived in Paradise, but they spoiled it by listening to Satan instead of God. Eve suffered terrible grief when her son Cain murdered his brother Abel, yet despite these tragedies, Eve went on to fulfill her part in God’s plan of populating the Earth. Sarah: Wife of Abraham Sarah was one of the most important women in the Bible. She was the wife of Abraham, which made her the mother of the nation of Israel. Yet Sarah was barren. She conceived through a miracle in spite of her old age. Sarah was a good wife, a loyal helper and builder with Abraham. Her faith serves as a shining example for every person who has to wait on God to act. Rebekah: Wife of Isaac Rebekah, like her mother-in-law Sarah, was barren. When her husband Isaac prayed for her, God

opened Rebekah’s womb and she conceived and gave birth to twin sons, Esau and Jacob. During an age when women were typically submissive, Rebekah was quite assertive. At times Rebekah took matters into her own hands. Sometimes that worked out, but it also resulted in disastrous consequences. Jochebed: Mother of Moses Jochebed, the mother of Moses, is one of the under-appreciated mothers in the Bible, yet she also showed tremendous faith in God. To avoid the mass slaughter of Hebrew boys, she set her baby adrift in the Nile River, hoping someone would find him and raise him. God so worked that her baby was found by Pharaoh’s daughter. Jochebed even became her own son’s nurse. God used Moses mightily, to free the Hebrew people from their 400 year bondage of slavery and take them to the promised land. Although little is written about Jochebed in the Bible, her story speaks powerfully to mothers of today.

Hannah: Mother of Samuel the Prophet Hannah’s story is one of the most touching in the entire Bible. Like several other mothers in the Bible, she knew what it meant to suffer long years of barrenness. In Hannah’s case she was cruelly taunted by her husband’s other wife. But Hannah never gave up on God. Finally her heartfelt prayers were answered. She gave birth to a son, Samuel, then did something entirely selfless to honor her promise to God. God favored Hannah with five more children, bringing great blessing to her life. Bathsheba: Wife of David Bathsheba was the object of King David’s lust. David even arranged to have her husband Uriah the Hittite killed to get him out of the way. God was so displeased with David’s actions that he struck dead the baby from that union. In spite of heartbreaking circumstances, Bathsheba remained loyal to David. Their next son, Solomon, was loved by God and grew up to become Israel’s greatest king. From David’s line would come Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. And Bathsheba would have the distinguished honor of being one of only five women listed in Messiah’s ancestry.

Elizabeth: Mother of John the Baptist Barren in her old age, Elizabeth was another of the miracle mothers in the Bible. She conceived and gave birth to a son. She and her husband named him John, as an angel had instructed. Like Hannah before her, she dedicated her son to God, and like Hannah’s son, he also became a great prophet, John the Baptist. Elizabeth’s joy was complete when her relative Mary visited her, pregnant with the future Savior of the World. Mary: Mother of Jesus Mary was the most honored mother in the Bible, the human mother of Jesus, who saved the world from its sins. Although she was only a young, humble peasant, Mary accepted God’s will for her life. She suffered enormous shame and pain, yet never doubted her Son for a moment. Mary stands as highly favored by God, a shining example of obedience and submission to the Father’s will.

The Church Tea

A New Season – For Real… I’m sure people who were not even interested in the program watched (RHOA) the Real Housewives of Atlanta and the horrendous fight that ensued at the season finale episode reunion. Whether you are on team Kenya or team Porsha ... I was still dishearten seeing two such beautiful black women invoke so much wrath on each other – two ladies in elegant gowns, reduced to a cat fight.

Unfortunately, our society has grown accustom to seeing this modern day Roman arena type dysfunctional TV behavior. What example have we set for future generations of woman who thrive on reality programs – ultimately controlled by the greedy program managers who rake in millions in advertising (not to mention the residual rights to the income for past and future episodes)?

I doubt if any of the woman featured on the RHOA have any real creative advantages to send the broadcast in a positive or negative direction. This show has been successful for the all the designers and stylists who get display their clothing goods and hair skills well beyond the Atlanta, Georgia region. These woman spend $7,000.00 on a handbag or one pair of shoes without blinking twice. They receive private showings of merchandise from the most expensive retailers in the nation. Yet still they bicker and hold grudges unbecoming to most of us.

The truth be told, unseemly actions have occurred to the best of us. How many of us have done things we wish we could take back? A fight, an unkind word or thought? No church is perfect … and if it was, that perfection ceased when you walked in. As Christians, we “try” not to judge harshly, as we never know what journey God has set forth in our lives.

Well, the summer months are here, and I am still an advocate for putting on your best outfit to visit the house of God. It’s a great feeling to admire a person’s great style in church, but it makes you no less special if you showed up with torn pants and runover shoes. In the meantime, let’s never rejoice in the pain of another person’s private reality show. Just remember, “But by the grace of God there go I.”

Join me Friday’s at 12:00 noon. Tune into the Power Magazine hour on WOLB, co-hosting with Rev. Wingo. I’ll provide a link on FB to listen via internet. Until next time, To God be the glory! Email me: TheChurchTea.power@gmail.com
