Strengthening Families Community Initiative: A Real Blessing for Baltimore Families:
There is no shortage of organizations, agencies or programs seeking to serve and positively impact some targeted population or underserved group in Baltimore City. Most, given often limited resources, are doing an admiral job. Access to publicly-funded drug and mental health treatment is in most cases only a phone call away.
There are several large-scale programs active in the Baltimore City Public School System that address the needs of high-risk students as well as overall school climate. What has historically been missing however, are programs that connect the range of individuals impacted by addiction, mental health, incarceration and disintegrated families and communities. The Strengthening Families Program Community Initiative sponsored by the Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems, Inc is a first step in filling this gap and expanding the scope of services and support from individuals to entire families. The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a 14-session, science-based parenting skills, children's life skills, and family life skills training program specifically designed for highrisk families. Parents and children participate in SFP, both separately and together. SFP has been found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their

children and learn more effective parenting skills.
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) Community Initiative first launched in Baltimore in February, of this year. To date more than 50 families have participated in the program. Current SFP program sites include a local community center, a school, a church and a community drug treatment program. The programs are dispersed across the City and offer real hope and support for families looking to strengthen family systems and structure. As Project Director for the SFP Initiative I have personally visited each of the programs this year, and have been truly moved and inspired by the work that the families were doing to heal and develop stronger family bonds. One of the program sites I visited included a young man who met his father for the first time at one of the sessions, following the fathers’ release from incarceration. Another program starts and ends each session with prayer. While the program is not religious in nature there is no denying a spiritual connection exists and that the combination of this and a willingness on the part of families to heal together have served in making the Strengthening Families Program a real blessing for Baltimore families. For more information on the Strengthening Families Program Community Initiative contact Dr. Debra Furr-Holden at (410) 637-1900 or via email at dholden@bsasinc.org

Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
Preparation Prepare ye the way of the Lord. Mark 1:3 We must be very careful of expecting something from an unprepared people. People’s hearts must be prepared to receive anything from God. An unprepared people may reject the unfamiliar and the unknown. Preparation is the key when God is releasing the blessings. If we expect people to be ready to receive from God, we must help them to get ready. They may not always see the hand of God. They may not always recognize Him when He comes. We must fast and pray for people to receive the news that change is coming or that something new is about to happen. God is moving in a new and different way. If we look for the same way God has moved in the past, we may miss what He is doing now. Be the voice crying in the wilderness of hopelessness, despair, need and want. Pray that people will be ready for the move of God that is coming. Share your thoughts: www.thinkonthesethingsbywingo.blogspot.com

Alcoholics, Crack heads, Sinners and Saints: All Are Welcome (Are they Really?) Recently I came across a church message board that instead of inspiring me to seek a relationship with a higher power for some reason I found myself deeply disturbed. Since I personally know the pastor of this particular church, the great work he has done in the inner city for years and of his publicly stated empathy towards men and women struggling with drugs and alcohol, and his support for people in recovery from addiction I immediately tried to find the positive in the message. Try as I might I could not find any redeeming, profound, affirming or uplifting aspect to the message. Maybe it was intended to announce the title of an upcoming sermon to be preached, or as an invitation to attend Sunday service. Either way for me the message missed its mark, especially if it was intended to make someone struggling with drugs and alcohol feel welcome to attend. My question is what is driving this phenomenon and need to label or identify someone based on their condition. Long before someone achieves the notoriety and public designation as an alcoholic, drunk, crack head he or she is a man or woman, boy or girl, somebody’s son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, coworker/colleague, childhood friend and most importantly, a child of God. What gives society the right to attach labels such as junkie, addict, dope fiend, wino, drunk or any other negative, degrading or demeaning label to someone struggling with addiction? Why the need to stigmatize people. Have we lost compassion or the ability to empathize with someone struggling with addiction?
As a recovering person and a professional, I know firsthand that any moment of clarity or window of opportunity in which someone addicted to alcohol and drugs, legal or otherwise might chose to seek out or ask for help is both narrow and oftentimes shortlived. What a shame it would have been if someone had chosen that particular Sunday to attend this particular church to ask for God’s help or to reach out directly to the pastor for help and they were greeted with a message that read in part “alcoholics and crack heads welcome” . There is an old saying “never judge a man or woman until you have walked a mile in their shoes”. Still cannot relate, try this little test. Take one negative thing (just one) in your life you feel goes against your upbringing, your belief system, or maybe even against God’s word, and attach a label to it. Now place that label in front of who you are as a person, and accept the fact that this is how people will see and refer to you no matter what positive things you have done in the past or hope to do in the future. A heavy burden to carry isn’t it. Furthermore, while I am no biblical scholar I have read and understand enough of the good book to know God often chooses to redeem and use the least of the least (in the eyes of many) to convey a message to the masses or to demonstrate his awesome power. While church wasn’t a high priority in embarking on my initial journey of recovery, I knew at some point I would choose to enter God’s house again based on my upbringing. When I finally did I wonder if I would have crossed the threshold if I had walked up to a message that read … alcoholics, crack heads and sinners welcome.
