A Word from Our Mayor Winter Storm 2014: Pulling Together To Stay Safe There's no doubt about it, good luck plays a huge role in how well a community fares during a winter storm. Two other important factors are having good people and having a good plan. While the ice and snow Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange of this winter will be in our memories for many years to come, I hope that we remember the great work that many of our City employees performed when the weather conditions were at their worst. Our City-County EMA professionals closely monitored forecasts, kept us informed and activated our Emergency Command Center to ensure resources were efficiently directed to meet citizen needs. EMA Director Calvin Brown joined us last year. He worked in New Orleans during Katrina and the aftermath. His experience was evident during our winter storm. Employees in our Streets Maintenance and Sanitation departments worked tirelessly to keep our roadways as safe as possible. Nearly 1,900 tons of sand were spread on streets,

bridges and overpasses. Our motto of, "sand early and sand often" was effective. Our Police and Fire/Rescue personnel worked many hours of overtime responding to snow-related and regular emergencies. The new South Central precinct in the former Montgomery Mall had its grand opening just several days earlier and was a major asset in the City's response to the storm. Our 911 and 311 call takers were a precious line of communication between our citizens and agencies tasked with serving the public. Some calls had to be answered by department heads like Rob Spivery, the director of Parks and Recreation and others who left their areas of expertise to support the storm effort. The media performed their job superbly. They worked long hours and had frequent reports to keep the rest of us informed. Finally, our citizens deserve loads of credit for their role in minimizing the storm's impact. We took the unprecedented step of closing City streets; a hard decision that likely caused inconvenience and monetary losses for some businesses. But, by staying home, accidents and crises were avoided and lives were saved. When Old Man Winter was at his worst, the Capital of Dreams pulled together to weather the storm.

b y G e o f f S to u g h Religion has always played an important role in Montgomery. From the time the city was founded in 1819, various denominations began forming, sharing a common building until an individual structure could be completed or meeting in homes. One of the early churches in Montgomery was St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. It was the first Catholic Church built in Montgomery on the corner of Lawrence Street and Adams Avenue. The land for the new church was donated by Mr. Edward Hanrick and would remain the permanent location of St. Peter’s Church. In 1834, a small frame church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Michael Portier of Mobile. The first priest of St. Peter’s was a cousin of Bishop Portier by the name of Gabriel Chalon. Father Chalon served the parish for three years and his hard work solidified a strong, though small Catholic presence in Montgomery. After three years at St. Peter’s, Father Chalon was transferred to Mobile.

By the mid 1840s, the population and wealth of Alabama was moving south and with it came the state capital. In 1850, the parish of St. Peter’s was given a full-time resident priest. Under his leadership, the current structure was built. The church was constructed in the Spanish style and completed in 1852. It was dedicated on September 10, 1853 by Bishop Timon of Louisiana, assisted by Bishop Portier of Mobile.

In 1881, a 25-foot enlargement was made along the front of the church, towers added and major changes to the interior of the church were completed. Ten years later, a new pipe organ was installed. The organ was reportedly one of the oldest in the area. It served the parish until the 1950s, when mechanical problems caused it to shut down. St. Peter’s has also played an important role in education and medicine in Montgomery. The Sisters of Loretto began the first Catholic schools for boys and girls. The school was eventually moved to Vaughn Road, where it remains as Catholic High School. The Daughters of Charity came to Montgomery and founded St. Margaret’s Hospital, which was in operation until 1988. St. Peter’s has successfully served the Montgomery community since its founding in the early part of the 19th century and continues to serve the area today. It started St. Andrew’s in Cottage Hill, St. Bede’s on Atlanta Highway and Our Lady Queen of Mercy on Narrow Lane Road.

Do you know the feeling of having a dry mouth? You know, when you wake up in the morning after you had been sleeping for hours with your mouth open. Your tongue feels like a disgruntled puffer fish and your gums and cheeks burn. Your teeth feel like they are covered with a thin film of tar. It’s hard to swallow, and you know it is not the time to get up close to breathe on anyone. Except on maybe your dog... dogs don’t judge. Now imagine what it would be like to deal with this feeling all the time. That is what it is like for millions of people who deal with dry mouth syndrome. Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is when your salivary flow is stunted or stopped. There are many reasons why this can happen. Many medications cause dry mouth as well as some medical conditions such as Sjogrens disease and diabetes. It is uncomfortable and annoying. It can also cause tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva is your mouth’s natural bathwater. It’s like a cool rush of clean water hosing away the post mardi gras funk on Bourbon Street. It provides and delivers disease fighting substances throughout your mouth. It neutralizes acids and washes away food and other debris. When saliva is stopped or restricted, the natural balance of your mouth shifts. It becomes more acidic and the bacteria and fungus that lives in all of our mouths becomes more concen-

trated and potent. Some other irritations include a constant sore throat, burning sensation, trouble speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or dry nasal passages. It is difficult to appreciate how uncomfortable it can be until one has experienced it his or herself.. If you’re one of the many people who suffer from dry mouth, talk to your dentist and physician about what you can do. Your physician can diagnose the source of it and your dentist can help you cope with and prevent any dental and oral problems it can cause. The bright side of electronic devices has a dark side, and that is Blue light. Adults and children alike have developed an insatiable diet for electronic devices and their content. Children as young as two years old use electronic devices and some parents use these devices as surrogate baby sitters to appease children. Many children get their first smartphone and gaming device by age 6, and now schools are turning in textbooks for tablets. Blue light emitted by our electronic devices including television has started a tsunami of potential harm for our eyes and general health. There is a solution, so keep reading…..

The Problem with Blue Light When we are exposed to electric light (especially tablets, PCs, smart phones, LED lights and TVs) after dark there is suppression of melatonin, a hormone that controls our circadian rhythms which increases alertness causing sleep deficiency. Light at night and especially Blue light is bad for your health says Dr. Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School. Teens have a lot of distractions to disturb sleep. Being very social, they don’t want to sleep because of the allure of texting and social media. 12

Teens should get 8-9 hours of sleep at night and it’s not happening. Teens normally have delayed sleep phase syndrome where they stay up late and get up late on weekends. Doctors at Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami say this lack of sleep triggers obesity, headaches, sleep disorders and a general inability to concentrate. Some 40% of people in the United States report that their sleep is insufficient, with 25% reporting difficulty concentrating secondary to fatigue. The US Institute of Medicine estimates that between 50 million to 70 million people in the United States suffer adverse health consequences from sleep disorders and sleep deficiency, including greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and stroke. When children lose sleep they become hyperactive instead of sleepy which may artificially inflate the prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dr. Czeisler of Harvard says, “the more we light up our lives the less we seem to sleep.”

The second problem with Blue light emanating from sunlight or electronic devices is the damage to the retina increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the leading cause of blindness in adults over age 55. The wavelength of blue light causes oxidative damage from a lifetime of exposure that is seen by your optometrist when he or she carefully inspects the retina/macula in your eye examination. There are special instruments like OCT used to follow this oxidative damage. One in four adults over age 65 will develop AMD. It is predicted that the number of people developing AMD will triple in the next decade because of increased exposure to Blue Light. The reason to prevent this condition is that it destroys an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s independence by affecting our ability to read or drive a car. Vision impairment has been shown to be associated with more falls and hip fractures, depression and worst of all increased mortality. These lenses contain ocular pigments and melanin in the optimal ratio to filter Ultraviolet and harmful blue light while preserving natural color perception. - Parents need to promote healthy habits for their kids such as plenty of structured sleep, time for exercise, eating fruits and vegetables and putting aside electronic gear, including TV and smartphones, after dinner.

When you strive to commit to a healthier lifestyle, you must stay consistent with a routine. It gets tough, but the key to success is to continuously focus on your initial lifestyle goals. We often start the journey, but then some interruption occurs. It could be as simple as having to pick the kids up from school at the time your regular workout is scheduled. And for some individuals, it only takes one day of derailment to initiate the spiral affect. You must put the last day behind you and get back on track immediately. You control the situations that come before you. So if you allow interruptions to continue to set you back from your journey, you'll forever complain about how tough it is for you to change your lifestyle. Surround yourself with positive thinking people, even if that positivity isn't coming from inside your home. A support group is vital, but persistence is the key. Maintain focus and success will come!!!

KEEP HOPE ALIVE

The article I wrote on hope in the January issue received a lot of attention. So I thought I would continue the series on hope. At the time, I wrote that hope does not rely on empirical data. Hope is an emotion and an attitude. Even in the face of a negative ending, we should continue to hope. If you lived hopeful and died hoping, someone may notice the hope you breathed. It can be apparent not just in you, but in all those around you. And when others see it, the fire of hope does not extinguish, but flames anew. That is how humans have not only learned to fly, but visited the moon and are pondering a trip to Mars. Let us not forget, many died in the process,

but they all hoped for a successful venture. The only thing that can defeat and demoralize fear is hope. Any form of fear can be vanquished by the light of hope. Doctors are baffled when they find their patients healed of cancer and heart disease reversed. Hope allows for these outcomes. Hope is why we pray every day. The act of praying is simply a testament of hope. I say to remain hopeful no matter what. Even when circumstances are dire, hope nevertheless. It gives energy to you and all around you. Hope feeds the motivation to act for the betterment of our lives.

JT & Leanne: Married with Microphones! Out of Our Comfor t Zone... Every once in a while, you have to leave your comfort zone to experience new things. And this past February, we did just that. We had never been on a ski trip before. As a matter of fact, we had never even really watched skiing until the Winter Games on NBC this year. After much thought and little consideration for our lack of skill, we decided to book a vacation in Breckenridge, Colorado, or as they call it there, "ski country.â&#x20AC;? With the kids in good hands, we flew to Denver then drove about an hour up to a mountain resort for a fast paced 4-day adventure on snow and ice! The first indication that we had no idea what we were doing was when we arrived at Budget Car Rental to pick up our subcompact vehicle with no horsepower and 2-wheel-drive. Luckily, the attendant realized what was happening and helped us into a Kia Sportage 4WD SUV. Nice! Day one of our private ski lesson started with 4 in the group. Only 3 came back after lunch! If you've never been on skis before, imagine heading down a hill at a pretty fast pace with little or no control. You make the decision to bail out by falling on your rear end or hitting the person or object directly in front of you. That's how it feels until you learn to balance and turn correctly. Then it's a lot less hazardous to yourself and those around you! We had a blast! And between the lessons and great hills at Breckenridge and the night skiing and "schoolyard" hills at Keystone, our experiences proved to be exhilarating! We had the time of our lives. It's something we had never done before and will remember for a long time to come! Most importantly, it gave us a break and a time to connect with each other as a couple, which is rare with the crazy lives we lead on the air and with our 3 teenage girls.

When I was a little girl, I remember my sisters and me sitting in our front room talking about where we were going to live when we grew up. We were discussing it with such enthusiasm that you would have thought we had crystal balls or had been allowed to peek into the future and see it for ourselves. One of my sisters said New York or California would be her home. Another said Texas for one reason or another. I, unlike my siblings, played it safe. My proclamation was that I’d always live in Mississippi. As a matter of fact, my house would be right across the field from our parents so I could see them anytime I wanted to. Yes, I would be the one who stayed close to home . . . Well, needless to say, all of us were wrong! The sister who was going to live in Texas now resides in North Mississippi near Tupelo. The one who would make the Big Apple or Hollywood’s state her home now lives in Atlanta, Georgia. And what about me? I had to be more wrong than either of them. Not only did I not stay at home after graduating from high school, I’ve lived in 3 different states and have only just moved close enough to my parents to see them quite often. But it’s still not right across the field! My sisters and I were like most of us. We usually envision our lives manifesting a certain way, going in a certain direction and having particular results. We create marvelous visions involving what we’ll accomplish, who we’ll marry (or not), the beautiful home we’ll live in, the fabulous cars we’ll drive . . . we dream of the best, most blessed outcomes simply because the human spirit is wired that way. But sometimes when life doesn’t follow the path we dreamed it would, we have to regroup. When the marriage doesn’t last… When the job comes abruptly to an end... When death slips in like a thief and carries a loved one away unexpectedly… When the house we worked so hard to make a home is swept away in seconds under nature’s wrath called a tornado. For most if not all of us, there comes a moment when we find ourselves standing with tear-filled eyes wondering, “What happened to my dream?” Those are the moments, my dear friends, when the Holy Spirit, God’s presence in the earth, leaps into action! With swift and unwavering precision, the Spirit of God begins to work showing us that despite how hard it is to remember the sweetness of the dreams we created for our lives, despite how much pain the current moment might hold for us, despite the difficulty we might have in just returning a genuine smile, the Holy Spirit comes to whisper in our spiritual ear, “You are still in the blessed place . . .” Even though it’s not where you thought you would be, “You are still in the blessed place.” Even though others have walked away from you, “You are still in the blessed place.” Even though you can’t see what The Father is doing, “You are still in the blessed place.” If God’s Spirit is with you, wherever you are is . . . the blessed place. Just like in humans, spring brings allergy problems for pets. Living in the south certainly doesn’t make dealing with allergies easier. In fact, pet allergies are the most common problem veterinarians see year round. Diagnosing and treating pet allergies can be complicated for veterinarians, especially if pet owners have made the problem worse by seeking advice from Dr. Google, Nurse Yahoo, or Professor Bing. Although the Internet has its place, it cannot diagnose the ROOT of your pet’s allergy problems. In fact, the advice can often make the problem worse, more complicated to diagnose, and even more expensive to treat. Veterinarians must first rule out possible secondary infections caused by bacteria, yeast or parasites…. then the real “allergy” hunt begins. Types of Pet Allergies If your pet’s itching, licking or coughing problem was not caused by bacterial, yeast or parasitic infections, allergies are likely the culprit. The most common allergies in pets are inhalant (atopy), food or contact allergies.

Atopy, (inhaled) is the most common form of allergy in dogs and cats. Atopy is often seasonal. If your pet is allergic to ragweed, his/her symptoms will occur in the fall. Pets allergic to spring tree pollen will show signs in March, April and May. If your pet is allergic to dust mites, the symptoms may flare up more in the winter, when your pets is spending more time inside. Signs of atopy can include:

Food allergies represent about 10-15% of all allergies in dogs and cats. Making diagnosis even more complicated is that food allergies can also show up concurrently with allergies associated with pollen, dust and other environmental exposure. And, food allergy symptoms are also similar to atopy’s which include:

Less common but just as annoying are allergies caused by contact dermatitis, which include allergies to carpets, cleaners or plastics. The most common symptoms being:

• chewing at the feet

• ear problems, often yeast-related

• constant licking • rubbing of the face • inflamed ears or recurrent ear infections • recurrent hot spots • asthma-like wheezing and respiratory problems

• itching, especially face, feet, trunk, limbs and anal area • skin infections that respond to antibiotics, but then recur as soon as antibiotic therapy ceases

• red itchy bumps or blisters in places that come in contact with the allergen ( belly, feet or muzzle) • intense scratching • hair loss So what’s a pet owner to do? There are many new treatment options and diagnostic tests available to help your pet enjoy an “itch-free” spring. If you feel your pet is suffering from allergies, seek the help of a trusted veterinarian and be patient. Identifying the root of your pet’s allergy problem is the first step to finding relief.

Know the Costs of Home Ownership by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent

As with many major purchases, there can be hidden costs when buying a home. But these buried expenses don't stop once the papers are signed and you have the keys. You also need to think about how much it's actually going to cost to live in your new home. Mortgage payments are only one part of your expenses. You also need to budget for taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities, yard work, repairs and other costs. Be realistic when calculating for these expenses as they can really add up.

Fixed Costs • Utilities. Consider gas, electricity, water and sewer, trash pickup, phone, internet and cable. The cost for an entire house can be significantly higher if you're moving from a smaller place. While it's hard to estimate the cost of utilities, you may want to request the present homeowner's utility bills for the past 12 months to get an accurate picture of energy costs throughout the year. Also, keep costs down by making your home more energy efficient. • Property taxes. Property taxes are based on the value of your home, so the more expensive your house is, the more you'll have to pay. Although taxes vary widely across the country, you can use a property tax estimator to get a rough idea of what to budget. • Insurance. Insurance premiums vary depending on where you live and a variety of other factors, including the size, type and age of your house. It's up to you to choose the coverages and limits that meet your needs, but it's best to insure your home for at least 100 percent of its estimated replacement cost (the cost of repairing or replacing your home to restore its original condition). • Homeowner fees. Many townhouses or condos have homeowner association (HOA) fees. Some of the costs covered can include exterior and interior maintenance, landscaping, water, sewer, garbage, parking lots and courtyard sidewalks and lawn care. One-time special assessments may also be levied to pay for emergency repairs or extensive improvements. VARIABLE Costs • House repair and maintenance. This can include anything from minor touch-ups to major repairs. Cleaning and repairing of gutters and chimneys, interior and exterior painting, roof repair, fixing electrical systems and plumbing and pest control are a few of the tasks to consider. While expert opinion varies, estimate spending between one to four percent of your home's value annually on maintenance and repairs. You should budget for items like water heaters, which on average last only 8-12 years. When they fail, they can cause major water damage. They need to be replaced before a catastrophic water loss occurs. For a $200,000 home, you may want to budget $2,000–$4,000 a year. If you need to hire someone to do the work for you, be aware of possible home repair scams. • Yard care. Mowing, edging, seeding, trimming, fertilizing, watering, weeding, planting flowers and shrubs, re-sodding and removing snow can all add up whether you do it yourself or hire a professional. • Appliances. Chances are most major appliances will come with the house, but this is not always the case. You may have to provide (or replace) the refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher or washer and dryer. • Remodeling. Redoing floors, opening up rooms, renovating kitchens and bathrooms, or adding square footage can improve the quality and value of your home, but the costs can add up quickly. You may want to prioritize the most important updates and budget for them over several years. Be sure you select a reputable home contractor to help you.

When mixing color into a jewelry wardrobe, chocolate diamonds, also known as cognac or brown diamonds, are a fabulous tool. They add depth to design, and just like your man’s khaki pants, brown goes with everything! The dark golden brown color also bridges and connects yellow gold and white or platinum pieces. If you have both white gold and yellow gold pieces, these darker diamonds can make these pieces of differing gold colors make more sense together. Cognac diamonds are usually less costly than their white cousins and have much more sparkle and brilliance than smoky quartz (the only other brown stone you see in fine jewelry). So consider a pair of chocolate diamond studs or dangles with a chocolate diamond as the centerpiece, or perhaps surrounding diamond halo for an artistic yet heirloom feel. The use of these brown beauties is not new in jewelry design. Most people simply did not know that they were diamonds. In the last few years, all colors of diamonds have been in the news, in celebrity engagement rings and in design more than ever. Rose gold is an incredible backdrop for the brown and white diamonds.
