Strong commitment to the community has always been a priority to Charles Roberson Sr., owner and manager of Gene’s Transmission Shop at 812 S. Sycamore Street. Mixing that commitment with the desire to accommodate his customer’s needs lead to the transformation of a dilapidated building and the expansion of a family business that will continue to strive for leadership in the world of automotive repair. With the help of son, Charles Roberson, Jr. (previously of Caliber Equipment) and Mike Bishop (previously of Mike’s Electric), Mr. Roberson was able to turn the run-down building next door into a full-service automotive repair shop that will open this month. With the additional space, Gene’s will offer the latest in computer diagnostics and general automotive repair in addition to specialized transmission repair. Mr. Roberson feels experience, amount of products in-stock and the turn-around time for repair are key factors in what has kept his customers coming back since 1984.

A new healthcare facility is open in Chester

Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge, located at 12001 Iron Bridge Road, is the newest short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility in the community. The facility officially opened Dec. 28, 2009, and is operated by Saber Healthcare Group, a growing company based in Cleveland, Ohio. The 90-bed facility was constructed to provide more options for area residents in search of a healthcare facility. The vision of owners, Bill Weisberg and George Repchick, is to provide quality care to the people of our community. Saber Healthcare Group is on the cutting edge of healthcare, seeking out the latest innovations in medicine and specialized patient care. The Saber Healthcare Group has a network of over 30 facilities. Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge is the third facility they have purchased Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge is located in Virginia. A fourth facility is currently under construction in Stafford at 12001 Iron Bridge Road. County. Tyler’s Retreat’s staff is made up of experienced CNA, LPNs and Registered Nurses who have a resident-focused approach. Lucinda Knarr is the Administrator and Amy Ruddick is the Director of Admissions and Marketing. “We want our residents to know that we will accommodate each person’s individual needs and preferences,” Knarr said. “They can be independent and pick and choose their schedules, therapy sessions and make their own health care decisions.” The facility has wide, well-lit hallways, two nursing stations, a large rehabilitation gym and a courtyard in the center. The spacious private rooms have luxury amenities, private baths and are large enough for residents to bring in their own furniture if they desire. The fine-dining services allow residents to choose from a menu for their meals. They also have an in-house beauty shop, a parlor, a large recreation room and a smaller game room. The facility is suitable for residents who have recently had surgery or a hospital stay and may require therapy or skilled nursing services before returning home. It can also accommodate individuals with a pro-longed acute or chronic illness. Medical services are offered 24 hours a day and include physical, occupational and speech therapy, infusion therapies, cardiac recovery services, diabetic management, wound therapy and a wide array of skilled nursing services. The facility also offers outpatient therapy services to former residents and non-residents. Having skilled therapists on staff allows for continuity and quality of patient care to those residents returning home who need to continue their therapy. The various therapies offered through Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge help residents improve and maintain their quality of life and prepare them for life after discharge. Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge is excited to be part of the Chesterfield community. Over the upcoming year, as their resident population grows, they will hire approximately 100 new employees. Michelle Nester, Activity Director, is seeking area volunteers to become a part of the facility family as well. Those interested in employment, to volunteer or seeking placement for a loved one, are invited to stop in for a tour. For more information, or to schedule a tour, please call Amy Ruddick at 706-1023.

Uniform styles may change ... Although uniform styles have changed over the years, London Uniform is a family business celebrating its 55th Anniversary this year. London Center and Corset Shop Inc. was established by Francis and Phil London in 1952. The London’s have long since retired, but under new owners, Mike and Jean Greenberg, the family tradition has continued. The Greenbergs have phased out the corset department and updated the name, but their passion in providing the Tri-Cities with the largest selection of uniforms, scrubs and accessories remains today. They take pride in offering new styles and latest fashions in all uniforms and always offering “old fashioned” personal attention to everyone who walks through the door. 6

CitruSolution process is Key to superior cleaning service James Key is owner and operator of CitruSolution carpet and upholstery cleaning. The business is located in Chester, Va., and services the southwest Richmond metro area. After working 20 years as a Process Engineer for Reynolds Metals Company and Infineon Semiconductor Company, I decided to go into business for myself. I evaluated the CitruSolution process and was very impressed with the results and decided to buy into the franchise, which is located in Atlanta. The CitruSolution process started back in 1986 and the current process was finalized in 2002. We provide the best and most reliable carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning service to residential and commercial customers. The CitrusSolution process does not use any soap and does not soak your carpet. The dry cleaning solvent is made from extracts of citrus peels with a twist of lemons and grapefruit. Smells great! The process is very effective against pet stains and can reverse yellowing and browning typically associated with wet, soapy and foaming methods. The three-step process involves pre-spray with our solvent cleaner that doesn’t contain any soap, so there will not be any sticky residue left in the carpet. The second step is to brush with a bonnet dirt napper to pick up the dirt to the surface and to work in the cleaning solution. The last step is to vacuum

Alvin Small founded what is now E. Alvin Small Funeral Home and Crematory in 1952 on the Boulevard in Colonial Heights. Since the interstate had not yet been opened, the road out front then carried most of the East Coast traffic and, as was common at that time, the funeral home doubled as the local ambulance service. With help from Alvin’s dad, Edward, two brothers, Herbert and Ralph, and several close friends, they set the foundation for what the firm is today. In 1990 Alvin’s nephews, Bryan Small and Louis Smith, assumed management and ownership. Services continue at the same place on the Boulevard and also at another location on Crater Road in Petersburg. There is also a crematory to service cremation needs and special equipment for the cremation of pets. Families in the area still largely embrace a traditional approach with visitations and burials. Many often bring in photographs, mementos and artifacts illustrative of a person’s life. A video tribute of personal photos may also be shown and favorite music played rather than strictly hymns. Visitations are often a somewhat festive reunion of longtime family and friends. The public setting of the funeral home encourages friends and acquaintances that may be unwilling to visit a family at their home. The mere presence of a visiting friend conveys much to a family. You don’t need a lot to say. Funerals after all are a celebration of a life lived. Those who desire cremation are served by the funeral home’s own crematory, the first in the Tri-Cities. Cremation can be very simple or can be the culmination of a traditional visitation and funeral ceremony. Many people consider their pets to be a part of their families. The funeral home has Forever Friends Pet Cremation Service to aid those who have lost pets. Pet caskets are available and separate pet cremation equipment is used. Families continue to be the number one priority for over 57 years and counting.

Purple cow showing remarkable growth

Have you ever seen the purple cow of Colonial Heights? I know many of you have, but you may not have realized it was a purple cow! In fact, you may not have even realized that you were actually inside the purple cow! Remember Greenleaf Dairy that was located in Colonial Heights? Well, the purple cow now stands on that same land. “Where?” you ask. Let me tell you the story. Greenleaf Dairy as many of you know was a farm full of brown, black and white cows. You drank milk delivered from Greenleaf in the “good old days,” never knowing that one day there would be a purple cow on that land. While there may not be anything extraordinary about a dairy farm full of brown and black cows, I think we would all agree that a purple cow is truly remarkable! Tell me, if you saw a purple cow, what would you do? Would you tell everyone you knew? Would you take them to see the purple cow so they could see it for themselves? Well, for those of you that I mentioned earlier who I know have seen this purple cow, I can tell that is exactly what you did!

Faith-based Lundie Insurance represents clients with compassion

BUSINESS WITH A HIGHER PURPOSE With TV ads, internet opportunities, phone and mail solicitation, one might think there’s no need for a personal insurance agent in these modern day and times. How wrong that idea can be! Our business truly has a higher purpose. Sure, you can purchase any type of insurance product you’re searching for right here under this roof, but it’s the level of caring for and about our clients that makes the difference. We’ve all experienced it, making a purchase at a store, the person waiting on you won’t even make eye contact, won’t stop their cell phone call, or the conversation they are having with another fellow “non-service” person. We’ve experienced that first hand and how annoyed we were when it happened. Unfortunately, that does happen in some businesses no matter how hard the business owner works. We’ve experienced it here, but never again! Our heartbeat is to care about your personal and varied business insurance needs ... as the company grows, even in tough financial times, our dependency is faith-based and we know all will work out as it is intended to be. Our job is to represent our clients, our companies and our established reputation in the finest manner. Compassion and care for those in hard times reflects the hard work our team does in

searching for the best coverage at the best price for every individual client. We feel your pain as you negotiate your budget and your paycheck, and we realize the importance of good insurance coverage should the unavoidable accident happen and leave you in financial danger. Our personal commitment is shown in every telephone transaction, every contact with personal or commercial lines clients. We are people desiring to help people, to be available at your time of need. Our goal is to offer the BEST personal service you can possibly expect or get anywhere in the Tri-City area. As a team, we aim high and intend to hit the mark. CORNERSTONE OF BUSINESS Cornerstone Business Builders — This Christian organization, founded by Michael Moore, brings businessmen and women together to support each other, both spiritually and with referring business to each other . Mr. Lundie says this encouragement and edification of fellow business leaders reminds us as a team to approach work as if we were doing it for the Lord, not for him. Frank meets weekly with other business leaders at Cornerstone Business Builders. “Team Lundie” says it’s changed their company, their people, the atmosphere in their business, their mission as a team.

STRATEGIC ALLIANCES Four years ago, Frank Lundie met Jeff Graves, who’s the General Agent of Mass Mutual here in Central Virginia. Jeff is partners with Tommy Earle, who operates Financial Group of Virginia, a group benefits broker. Frankie, Jeff, and Tommy formed Capital Financial Property & Casualty, LLC together in 2006. That new entity is now a thriving and profitable business on its own, and growing along at healthy pace. Their representatives now work with Capital’s clients providing top-tier choices of insurance companies and products for any type of personal, business and corporate insurance solutions. Now, Lundie is rolling out the full compliment of services of Financial Group of Virginia’s benefits offerings to Lundie clients. Look for them soon! It’s been quite a pleasure enjoying the completion of a long renovation and preservation of this building we love: it is full of character and characters!

NEW FACES It’s with great pleasure we’ve added Lois Adams as Account Manager in the Personal Lines Dept. Lois comes with five years experience. Her expertise is a warm, down home approach that makes clients feel welcome, as well as an excellent work ethic that gets the job done — she’s definitely a client advocate! Teresa Dolan’s forte is personal lines, with 17 years in the insurance business, first as an underwriter. Tri-Cities Home Care Company Raises the Bar on Service

The population of American seniors is expected to double in size within the next 20 years, according to a special study entitled 65+ in the United States: 2005, commissioned by the National Institute on Aging. As our aging population continues to grow, so does the demand for elder care. When our loved ones can no longer live by themselves at home, we have to make a big decision … who is going to take care of them? We also have to ask ourselves how much can we afford? What are their needs? And how would they feel about going to an assisted living facility? More often than not, your loved one is going to want to stay right in their own home because there is nothing like the comfort and security of home when you’re ill, confused or recovering from an illness. Research shows that even for those living with chronic illness and disability, living at

home is often the best option for physical and mental wellbeing. Additionally, it’s often significantly less expensive than assisted living options. It provides them with the dignity and independence they desire. And it can also help prevent or postpone hospital or nursing home care. To better fill the home care needs of the Tri-Cities and Southside Virginia, three wellrespected and highly sought after home care companies have joined forces under the name of Personal Care Preferred Group (PCPG). This combined network of home care companies, including Personal Touch Home Care Services, Southern Touch Healthcare Services and Moore Home Care Services, raises the standards of at-home care, because it can provide a wider variety of services and better employee benefits than many other home care companies. The upgraded employee benefits attract the most qualified and profes-

just the right amount of care

sional staff in the region, resulting in a higher level of care. PCPG’s Registered Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Personal Care Aides provide a wide variety of health related services in the home, assistance with activities of daily living and companionship. Whether it’s long-term or short-term at-home support that’s needed for seniors, the disabled, new parents, individuals recovering from illnesses, injury or surgery, or anyone who lacks the time or energy to get everything done in a day, PCPG has a personal care aide that can assist. Depending on the type and length of assistance required, services can be funded by long-term insurance, worker’s compensation, Medicaid support, private-pay or other methods. For more information on how PCPG can help someone you know, call 1-800-598-9854 or visit www.pcpgonline.com.

If you think professional home care for your aging or disabled loved one is out of your financial reach, think again. Personal Care Preferred Group can customize a short term or long term plan for your loved one that provides just the right amount of care they need and the peace of mind you deserve. To learn more how Personal Care Preferred Group can help you save money, time and stress over who is going to care for your loved one when you can’t, give us a call.

Hales Insurance Agency continues tradition of superior service Hales Insurance Agency is believed to be the second oldest business that was started in Colonial Heights, beginning in business in 1954, two years after the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home. However, it’s safe to assume that during that time, it was one of a very few that was started and co-owned by a woman. Her husband, Joseph C. Hales Sr., had been in the insurance business for a few years before contracting polio in 1952. Joe — who served his country in World War II — came home and drove a truck for PepsiCola for a few years before starting his journey in the insurance business. While Joe was unable to work, Mary needed to provide for their

young family. So with the help of Travelers Insurance – who gave an agency contract to a woman with little insurance background – Mary started the business while Joe continued his recovery. Mary began the business out of the family’s home on Richmond Avenue; first in a converted covered porch, and later a new addition. Her husband joined the operation and the business outgrew these cramped spaces. So the family and the business moved to a new home at the same location — 664 Boulevard. Joe had lost the use of his legs but not his spirit or resolve and the two of them together built a successful business that has been maintained for three generations and over half a century.

Joe and Mary built a business that was based on superior service for a fair price and that tradition continues today. Joe started with his roots in life and health insurance and then moved the business into a fullfledged independent agency offering personal insurance and business insurance, along with the life and health protection. He was always the focal point of the agency and his family, both from his visible presence in his braces or wheelchair to his booming voice and easy laugh. If you came into the office his desk was front and center and he would likely be the first person to greet you. Joe never let his disability slow him down or affect the way that he lived his life. He always had a car outfitted with hand controls for the gas and brake and later added a car-top wheelchair lift. He drove all over the country and had a valid permit until he reached age 90. Business improved steadily after Joe Hales Jr. joined the family business in 1964, so they moved the agency across the street to Pickwick Square Shopping Center in 1971. The business continued to add family members as another son, Harry, and a daughter, Ivey, joined the growing business. Eventually outgrowing this shopping center space, the business made its final move in 1977; taking over the large front yard of the family residence on the Boulevard. There have been two more additions, but this is still where the office resides today. Many other family members have worked in this true “family business,” Joe Jr.’s wife Betty Lou, Joe

Sr.’s brother William Hales, Ivey’s son and daughter, Scott and Kimberly, and Joe Jr.’s son Jody. The agency is also blessed to have two long-term employees, Trudy Davis and Linda Wade, and looks forward to welcoming back Cathy Williams, who will begin work at the agency for her third time later this month when her husband is reassigned back to Fort Lee. Mary took advantage of a welldeserved retirement after working for 30 years, but she and Joe Sr. continued to live in the residence attached to the office. She was a frequent and welcome visitor in the office, which functions as much as a front door to the house and an entry to a commercial operation; welcoming visitors, family, and long-time customers. Mary passed away on May 7, 2008 at the age of 88, falling just short of her and Joe Sr’s. 70th wedding anniversary in November. She is remembered fondly by family and friends not just as business pioneer, but also as a loving mother to three, grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to 10, and a true friend to many that she met over a long and fruitful life. Joe passed away a year later on April 3, 2009 at the age of 90. Joe Hales Sr. was truly the cornerstone and the “commanding presence” of Hales Insurance. He made a lasting impression on all of his customers, employees and family members and his memory lives on everyday at 664 Boulevard. Both Joe and Mary Hales are the foundation of Hales Insurance Agency. Their commitment to the customers continues on today at Hales Insurance Agency.
