RBC 1
President’s Message The 2010-2011 academic year brought numerous positive changes to Richard Bland College. We began with the ribbon-cutting for the new Science and Technology Center: A $19,000,000, 52,000 square foot facility that serves the biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science disciplines. In June 2011, the recreation complex consisting of tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a softball field, and a pavilion was completed. It will be ready for use in August 2011. Where the Science and Technology Center was a state project, all the costs of the recreational complex came from private funds. Your help in this endeavor was crucial in enabling the College to construct this outdoor facility located between Statesman Hall and the residential village. As I begin my last year as President and as I reflect on the past 43 years that Nancy and I have spent at Richard Bland, I marvel at the success of the many first-generation college students who began at the College, the adults returning to school after years in the workforce, and the sons and daughters of RBC graduates who have followed in their parents’ footsteps. Without RBC, there are those who would never have had the opportunity to attend college.
In 1961, the College employed nine faculty members and enrolled 175 students. While today our enrollment of 1,600, thirty-six full-time and twenty-five part-time faculty members reflects the growth of the institution, I can still say that the family atmosphere which existed then is still in place today. There must always remain a need for small colleges where students are known by their names, where a faculty’s primary responsibility is to teach, and where access and affordability serve as watchwords for administrative decision-making. In closing, let me thank you for your past support and encourage you to continue to support RBC. More than ever before we need your gifts and commitment! Richard Bland is a special place and I encourage you to consider us as the institution of higher education at which you begin the next phase of your educational journey. Recently voted by our Community as “Best in the TriCities for Higher Learning” in The Progress Index Reader’s Poll, I encourage you take advantage of all that Richard Bland College has to offer… Again, I thank you for your support and wish each of you only the best in the years ahead. Sincerely, Dr. James B. McNeer President
