Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter Weather

Kim and Andrew Taylor

Winterizing your vehicle is really just continuing maintenance. Harsh winter weather can worsen an existing problem or create new ones when regular maintenance hasn’t been done throughout the year. Regular maintenance inspections by professional automotive technicians will catch a small problem before it becomes a safety issue or costly repair. A prepared car for winter is a safe car. In the Fall we recommend the following to prepare your vehicle for Winter driving: Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. Just because the weather is cool, your vehicle can still overheat and cause engine damage. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years. Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. Ask if your car repair shop can refill your windshield wiper fluid with a de-icing fluid which will melt ice off the windshield and will not freeze. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries. The battery should be securely mounted and the connection should be clean, tight and corrosion free. If the battery is three or more years old; it should be tested and replaced if necessary. And always keep a set of jumper cables in your trunk in case of an emergency. Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. Tires complete that essential link between your car’s suspension and the road; tires are responsible for translating the driver’s intentions directly towards vehicle performance. A quality set of tires will offer the responsiveness necessary for obstacle avoidance; short stopping distances that aid panic braking situations, and road-holding grip under both dry and wet conditions. The right set of all season tires correctly fitted to your car and your driving needs will make driving in winter weather much safer. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly. Be diligent about changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Harmful deposits in your oil can cause

Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce

a build up on engine valves, causing a decrease in engine performance and gas mileage. You should regularly check your vehicle fluids such as brake, transmission, and coolant. Over time harmful deposits can accumulate in fluids and cause corrosion in vehicle parts such as the brake system. Also check the engine, fuel, air, and transmission filters. The engine air filter is like your lungs. If your filter is dirty it will prevent clean air circulating to the engine which will cause a decrease in engine performance. Pay attention to your mileage. If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. At 60,000 and 90,000 most vehicles require some significant maintenance such as replacing timing belt/water pump and spark plugs. See your owner’s manual for the suggested maintenance but let a professional perform a maintenance inspection to see what needs to be done. Ask to see what they find if they make a recommendation you are not sure about. A reputable car repair shop will be happy to take you to the vehicle work area to show you worn parts, dirty fluid, and explain why they are recommending service. Have the brakes checked. This braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item. Have the exhaust system checked for car-

bon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. Check to see that exterior and interior lights and headlights work and aimed properly. We also recommend keeping the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, and flares. Also keep emergency phone numbers handy such as a good towing company should you be stranded. Remember no question is a stupid question. If your vehicle is making an odd noise, has a smell, or you feel something is wrong while driving immediately call a repair professional. Properly maintaining your vehicle will keep you safe on the road. Contributed by: Kimberly Taylor Titan Auto & Tire 16429 Jefferson Davis Hwy South Chesterfield 23834 TitanAutoTire.com

“Thanks, but No Thanks”: Using Disclaimers as an Estate Planning Tool Prepared by MetLife Delivered courtesy of Michael J Colb, MetLife Premier Client Group of the Mid-Atlantic

In the world of wills, it’s not uncommon for Michael J. Colb a parent or other family member to die with a will that was drafted and executed many years before the individual’s death. Often times, a parent may not feel comfortable discussing their estate plan with their child or guardian and may not want him or her to know the size of the estate. Such a situation introduces a few potentially thorny questions: What happens if some of the intended beneficiaries are financially secure and do not need or want to inherit a portion of the deceased’s estate? Does the deceased’s will or other estate planning documents force the heir to accept the bequest? What can an heir who does not want to receive a bequest do?

Feel free to say no—correctly The good news is, a gift or bequest cannot be forced upon a beneficiary of the estate or a beneficiary under the terms of a will or other estate planning document. Be that as it may, the named beneficiary still needs to renounce in a timely fashion all interest in the gift or bequest. Furthermore, the renunciation, which is referred to as a qualified disclaimer, must satisfy some very specific requirements.

A qualified disclaimer enables a beneficiary to disclaim or renounce their interest in a gift or bequest. Although it may seem strange, the person disclaiming the interest in the property is treated as if that individual predeceased the person who bequeathed the property to them. The property will then pass to the contingent beneficiary under the terms of the deceased’s will or other estate planning documents.

To be effective, there are a number of requirements to the disclaimer that must be satisfied. Failure to satisfy these requirements will result in the person disclaiming their interest being treated as if that individual made a gift to the contingent beneficiary. More specifically, the IRS has defined a qualified disclaimer as an unqualified and irrevocable refusal by a person to accept an interest in property, under the following conditions:

The refusal must be in writing. The written document must be received by the transferor of the interest, his legal representative, or the holder of the legal title to the property being disclaimed not later than nine months after the later of the day on which the transfer is made or the day on which the individual reaches age 21. The person refusing the interest in property has not accepted the interest or any of its

benefits. As a result of the refusal, the disclaimed interest must pass without any direction on the part of the person who is making the disclaimer. A disclaimer that satisfies these requirements will be considered a qualified disclaimer and the individual disclaiming the property will be considered to have never received the disclaimed property. The property then will pass to the contingent beneficiary and the person who disclaimed the interest will be treated as having predeceased the transferor. Disclaimers in Action and Other Situations Perhaps an example will help best illustrate how a qualified disclaimer works. Let’s say that Sheila dies on November 1, 2013. Under the terms of her will, a testamentary trust is created for the benefit of her son Matt (age 29). The trust provides that Matt will receive income for life and the trustee is granted discretion to make distributions of principal to Matt. On February 15, 2014, Matt sends written notice to the trustee in which he disclaims his interest in the trust. Matt never received any distributions of income or principal from the trust. Matt has satisfied the requirements for a qualified disclaimer and the interest in the trust will pass as if Matt predeceased Sheila.

There are also instances where an individual dies without a will, which is referred to as dying intestate. This situation leaves the distribution of the deceased’s assets subject to state intestacy laws. In addition, many individuals have wills that were executed quite a few years earlier and no longer reflect the decedent’s donative intent. Sometimes, the deceased may not have taken advantage of planning opportunities, which the survivors may be able to undo through the use of a qualified disclaimer as well. Conclusion The use of a qualified disclaimer may enable the deceased’s survivors to receive the property or other assets of the estate and avoid potential gifts being made by the disclaimant. In some estates, the estate planning documents anticipate the possibility a beneficiary may disclaim their interest. In these cases, it’s important that the documents carefully spell out all the contingencies in the event a beneficiary declines acceptance of a bequest. Things to NEVER Put in Your Plumbing System

Holiday season is right around the corner and with it comes parties and family gatherings. It also brings about our busiest time of the year. Large numbers of people and lots of cooking can wreak James Kester havoc on your plumbing system. Here are some things that have caused more than their share of expense and hassle… Cat litter, baby wipes, scrubbers, oh my! Flushable wipes seem like a great idea, as do flushable cat litter and flushable toilet sponges, because these items fill up the trash can quickly. However, these things do not break down as quickly and can easily clog your plumbing. Bye-bye blue water. The fresh, clean scent of drop-ins may be a sign of a clean toilet, but also a future plumbing repair. These tablets release harmful chemicals into the mechanics of your toilet and may weaken them, causing them to malfunction. Also, as the tablets dissolve, they can get lodged and jam up your toilet. Substitute regular cleaning of your toilet to save your toilet from unnecessary damage. Lay off the liquid. Pouring chemicals down the drain to dissolve clogged pipes also risks damaging your plumbing. As these harsh

chemicals travel through your pipes, they may wear down your plumbing in hard-to-access places; frequent use could also create widespread and costly damage. Use only for emergencies. What your sink thinks! Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify and choke drains. Wipe grease from pots with paper towels, then throw away the towels. Don’t put poultry skins, celery, fruit, cooked rice or potato peels down the garbage disposal. Most of these will become a gummy mess in your drain lines. Our team at Colonial Plumbing & Heating is committed to learning more ways we can make your home more comfortable. Sometimes we do this in a classroom setting of our own, but often we learn as we serve. We are committed to sharing our knowledge with you whenever you have a concern. Why? The comfort of your family is our top priority. Just give us a call! If you have a question about “Should I or shouldn’t I?” (as it relates to your home maintenance), we’d be happy to help. In the meantime, watch what you put in those drains. James Kester is a co-owner at Colonial Plumbing & Heating, where he has been fighting drain clogs for over 32 years.

Chamber Trip to China - April 2015 By: Roger Green The Colonial Heights and Petersburg Chambers of Commerce are offering a trip to China in April 2015. Recently, I was fortunate to preview the trip by traveling to Beijing, Suzhou, Ganzhou, and Shanghai for 8 of the most amazing days I have ever experienced. Traveling in China is a smorgasbord for your eyes as everything you see is different in one way or another from America. There are obviously great similarities but seeing Chinese language on every sign, seeing ancient temples and pagodas in the midst of ultra-modern skyscrapers, and seeing the immense size of the cities and the their historical sites is dazzling. On this trip to China, there was no way to get bored; not even for a second. Your senses are on alert and alive from what you see, hear, and share with the others on the trip. There is actually no way to describe in words what one sees when they visit Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, or the many historical sites, markets, factories, gardens, and plantations you see on the trip we are sponsoring. Both Beijing and Shanghai are cities with well over 20 million residents. Beijing has 6,000,000 automobiles and probably more mopeds, bicycles, and scooters and; remarkably, they all travel the same roads. Shanghai is 40 miles by 60 miles in area and is actually smaller than Beijing. Shanghai has 2 of the 5 tallest buildings in the world and combines an ultra-modern skyline with European architecture from the early 1900’s. Wherever we traveled the tour company was extremely professional, prompt, and highly organized. That factor made it possible to see such a variety of places and experience so many varied aspects of Chinese culture.

From Tiananmen Square to the Olympic venues, to The Forbidden City, the Summer Palace of the Dragon Lady our tour was safe, informative, and eye – opening. In 8 days, we experienced in addition to the previously mentioned venues: The Great Wall of China, The Palace Museum, a Hutong Tour by rickshaw, Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, Seventeen Arch Bridge, Pearl Factory, Ming Tombs, Tiger Hill, Suzhou Canals ( the Venice of the East), Lingering Gardens, Longjing Green Tea Plantation, Lingyin Temple, The Bund and many more sites. Words can’t describe the variety, the immense nature, the opulence, and the traditional and ancient sites as well as the modern state of the art architecture you see in China. We currently have two meetings scheduled to give you more information about this astounding experience that includes all air fare from JFK, 3 excellent meals per day, and exquisite hotel accommodations. The allinclusive trip is an incredible value at $2799. Chamber members receive an additional discount of $200. Please contact Roger Green at the Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce 804 526 5872 or Danielle Fitz-Hugh at the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce 804 733 8131 for more information. My Potential, My Dreams...How? Jim Pourteau John Maxwell Coach, Trainer and Speaker Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: To choose Jim Pourteau one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.” On 19 October 1944, Viktor Frankl and his wife Tilly were transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was processed. He was moved to Kaufering, a Nazi concentration camp affiliated with Dachau concentration camp where he was to spend five months working as a slave laborer. His wife Tilly who was separated from him, died in a concentration camp alone. Frankl’s mother Elsa, was killed by the Nazis in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, and his brother Walter died working in a mining operation that was part of Auschwitz. In 1959 he authored “Man’s Search For Meaning.” If we are not careful it can be easy to abdicate the ruling of our mind, and ultimate destiny, to the influence of someone or something else. Now, contrary to what some feel, the external lids in your life are not nearly as important as the internal lids. Although these external lids may aggravate, intimidate and even frustrate us, they only have the power to influence our destiny if we allow and empower them. The true and most critical things that limit our potential are those that are internal. I think it is safe to assume that there were days where Viktor Frankl may have felt completely helpless. His captors and their desire to break him had great power yet Viktor was able to remain whole and although scarred, ultimately triumph. How does someone do this? How can you not just survive, but thrive in every challenge? How can you reach your potential and fulfill your Dreams? 1. Recognize the Power You Have to Choose. Your ability to choose how you respond to any situation is your powerful weapon against defeat. The struggle is that many of us allow what’s happening around us to affect what is happening in us… A great choice you can make right now is to be a thermostat instead of a thermometer. A thermometer merely reflects the surrounding environment’s “temperature” but a thermostat changes it! This does not mean we are not authentic in our frustration or dissatisfaction or even our anger with something or someone, rather, we deal with problems in a way that doesn’t stall things

6

and cause more problems. I wish I could say I have mastered this but I haven’t. Yet even this lack of “mastery” isn’t a failure. When I “blow it,” I can choose to drown in my self-defeat, that I am not the world’s greatest leader, or I can decide... choose… to acknowledge where I’m wrong, ask for forgiveness, and move forward. Genuine, self-evaluation can be an empowering practice. What is the temperature around you? If it seems “cold” you have a choice. You can sit around and shiver or, you can choose to raise the temperature of your surroundings. As leaders, we need to continually ask ourselves whether we are a thermometer or a thermostat? One solution you can do today is to connect with likeminded, focused leaders who are “raising the temperature around them.” Mastermind meetings and personal Coaching are powerful places where this collaboration can occur. Is it cold where you are? What’s your setting? Make a choice to do something! 2. Don’t lose sight of the “WHY” in the middle of the “WHAT.” Why is the goal; the passion; the vision of your life. Asking “Why” is an amazing and powerful tool that every leader has in his or her toolbox. “Why am I doing this?” “Why does this matter?” “Why am I not going where I need to go?” “Why _____________” You fill in the blank. “Why,” if used in the correct way, can keep you on course or help you correct your course in the middle of doing what you are doing in order to reach the… well… “Why.” Confusing? Not really, just let me explain. “What” is really how we get to the “Why.” It’s the daily operations, the meetings, the planning, the conflict resolution, and the vision casting. It’s the “daily grind.” Basically the “What” is the methods in which I am doing things along with operations? Now we all know that these are a necessary part of structure and management but we also know, that at times, they can be absolutely exhausting. Maintaining a clear and accurate vision of why you are doing something is key in doing things and doing the right things. It sets the course and keeps you on that course. Many times in the faithful yet arduous tasks of doing what needs to be done we lose sight of why we actually do what we do. Kodak did this. They forgot they were in the “memory” business and thought they were in the “film” business and ultimate became irrelevant as the digital age immerged. Why are you doing what you are doing? Why is it important? Why does it matter? Identifying this will keep you on course. 3. Remember that Leaders are made

Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce

Daily not in a Day – We have all watched an athlete compete in their contest and prevail. They win the gold or the championship and thousands cheer their success and celebrate their victory yet few witnessed the true victories that led to this marvelous celebration. How many times did that athlete wake in pain or tired or lacking the emotional power to get up and train, yet fight through the distractions and obstacles to do what was needed to get what they wanted? Each time they made the decision to “strive towards the prize,” in the face of those who opposed them they were creating the character and discipline that would one day bring about the recognition of them as the Champion. I am sure there were days they failed to reach the mark. I am confident that there are temptations that call even the “greatest” towards other things, but the “greatest” stayed focused on the goal. Please don’t misunderstand me… the “contest”… the “event” is important. It’s just not the “Day” where you become the Leader you want to be. It is merely where all of the daily, deliberate and concentrated work you have been doing, will be recognized. Develop a habit of doing the Right Things every day that will lead you to the Right Place in your future. What are three things you need to begin doing daily that will create the momentum and direction towards your

Championship? This is most successful when you have someone to help you identify the disciplines you need to establish and then coach you in the process. Why are you doing what you are doing? Why is it important? Why does it matter? Identifying this will keep you on course. There will always be challenges and obstacles in life. Dreams are amazing but at some point for them to become a reality we must wake up and get to work doing the things that lead us to their fruition. Your potential can only be reached is deliberately developed and used. Realizing you have a Choice in everything, staying focused on your “Why” and remembering that getting there is a daily walk can give you the edge you need to thrive. You can do it! The choice is yours so begin now. If you would like a free consultation or desire leadership development please give us a call. We would love to see you reach your potential and reach your dreams. Change of Seasons Can Cause Seasonal Affective Disorder

With the change of the seasons I have seen an increase in people having symptoms of SAD. I thought I would share some information to assist you in understanding the symptoms Pamela Waitkus and treatment if necessary. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that affects an estimated half a million Americans every year during the winter months. SAD is more intense and prolonged than the usual ‘winter blues’ or ‘cabin fever’ sometimes experienced by persons who live in northern climates. Doctors are uncertain as to the exact causes of SAD, although researchers suspect it may be related to one of three factors: (1) decreased sunlight which upsets the body’s natural, circadian rhythms; (2) decreased melatonin, a hormone that is produced in greater quantity during the winter and linked to depression; and (3) a decrease in levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is triggered by sunlight. If you experience significant changes in your mood during the winter season or experience any of the following signs or symptoms, you may be struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Possible Signs and Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder: • Feelings of guilt, misery, hopelessness and/or despair; suicidal thoughts • Lethargy, fatigue and an inability to complete routine tasks • Anxiety, tension and an inability to tolerate stress • Loss of interest in activities that used to bring pleasure • Loss of libido • Sleep problems • Increased appetite and cravings for carbohydrates

• Weight gain • Irritability and social withdrawal • Difficulty coping with stresses Treatment of mild symptoms: • Keep drapes and blinds open in your home • Sit near a window during the day and gaze outside frequently • Turn on bright lights indoors •Don’t isolate yourself – try to stay involved in social activity • Stay active; exercise increases endorphins, which can elevate mood • Get outside as much as possible, especially in the early morning light • Try to take a vacation to a warmer, sunnier climate in the middle of winter • Eat a well-balanced diet, avoiding high carbohydrate foods that may cause weight gain Treatment for severe symptoms: If your symptoms are either unresponsive to the above recommendations or particularly severe, it is important to contact your health care provider for evaluation to see if the following may be recommended for you: Psychotherapy Medication (antidepressants) Phototherapy with artificial light sources How Do I Get Help?
