The headline on July 23 – “Ichiro traded to Yankees” – would have been unimaginable only two years ago.

Yet here he was, the 10-time All-Star, two-time American League batting champion, and 2001 rookie of the year and MVP – once considered one of the best players in the game – unceremoniously dumped by the rebuilding Seattle Mariners for a pair of minor league unknowns.

He wanted the deal to New York, it turns out, more than the Yankees wanted him, and so he agreed to concessions such as hitting at the bottom of the lineup. But if the 38-year-old can regain his stroke, it could be a win-win for both player and team.

Ichiro has never played in a World Series. The closest he came was in 2001, when the Mariners – winners of a record-tying 116 regular-season games that year – lost to the Yankees in five games in the Championship Series. He believes his last best chance to be on a winner lies in New York.

And the Yankees did have an opening in their outfield after left fielder Brett Gardner went down for the season with an elbow injury. Ichiro’s numbers this year – a .261 average and a .288 onbase percentage – are down considerably from his MLB career averages of .322 and .366. But as a defender he is at least Gardner’s equal, if not his superior, as his 10 Gold Gloves will attest. Now if he can just find the fountain of youth ... .

Ichiro can be seen in action Sunday, Aug. 19, on ESPN, when the Yankees host the Boston Red Sox.

In Focus “Prisoners of War,” www.hulu. com/prisoners-of-war Created by director, screenwriter and producer Gideon Raff, the 2010 series was the inspiration for the hit Showtime drama “Homeland.” Set in 2008, it follows three Israeli soldiers, captured 17 years ago while on a secret mission with their unit in Lebanon, coming home through a negotiated settlement — two (Ishai Golan, Yoram Toledono) alive and one in a coffin. They become national icons, but their home lives are difficult — and the military believes they are hiding something.

As the 2012 Calgary Stampede winds down, work continues on the Transcontinental Railroad, or at least the version being built in the fictional world of AMC’s Sunday sophomore drama “Hell on Wheels.”

“It’s hot right now,” says star Anson Mount, calling from the Alberta, Canada, city, “and we’re dealing with the mass confusion that is Stampede.”

Mount plays Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier trying to escape his haunted past. He has become attached to the traveling community of vice and corruption that follows the Union Pacific Railroad workers as they march across the country on the way to meeting the Central Pacific Railroad and linking the two coasts of the recently reunified nation.

Along the way, Bohannon has forged a link of his own with biracial emancipated slave Elam Ferguson (Common). They may have come from different worlds in the former Confederacy, but their fates are intertwined as the now United States of America struggles to remake itself.

“In a lot of ways,” Mount says, “it’s the most interesting relationship in the series. Cullen ends up having a position for the railroad that Elam covets, and it’s interesting watching how the writers have Cullen deal with that.

“He doesn’t face off with Elam directly. He’s led men before, and Elam hasn’t.

He realizes you don’t lead a man by beating him into submission. You lead a man by letting him choose when he comes around and then slowly allow him to take the reins of his own destiny.

“What makes the whole series work in terms of its brand is the fact that you have a huge group of men here who had, only months before, been trying to kill each other or owning each other. Suddenly they’re in a situation where, to some degree, they’re equal.

“When you’re getting paid to heave a sledgehammer, it doesn’t matter what color your skin is or where you’re from; you’ve got to get the job done.

“It’s a really phenomenal framework for a Western.”

Taking a break from shopping in a local health food store, rapper-turnedactor Common sees how the two characters have found a basis for, if not exactly friendship, then a sort of accommodation.

Florence gears up again for ‘The Great Food Truck Race’

•What are you currently reading?

I’m actually reading some really interesting books.

I’m reading a book by Ray Kurzweil that’s called “Transcend.” It’s about living as long as you possibly can, which I think is really interesting. I’m also reading a fantastic biography from Woody Guthrie.

I think it’s so interesting to think through what Bob Dylan’s idol was. So I’m reading this great book called “Bound for Glory.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

I was expediting at my restaurant, El Paseo, here in downtown Mill Valley (Calif.), so I shared a 38-day, grass-fed, dry rib-eye with our executive chef. It was delicious.

What is your next project?

Our next project is really just launching “The Great Food Truck Race.” We’re excited about that. And then our next cookbook, which is called “Tyler Florence Fresh,” comes out in November.

When was the last vacation you took – where and why?

I was just in Los Angeles a couple of days ago. My wife and I went down there for a birthday party.

The rise of the food truck in the U.S. may not have completely redefined fast food here yet, but it’s getting a toehold, that’s for sure. “The Great Food Truck Race” and its host, chef Tyler Florence, are helping the push, and starting Sunday, Aug. 19, the series careens into Season 3 with an entirely new twist to ratchet up the excitement.

“Seasons 1 and 2, we went with some of the best food truck operators in the country that already had established fan bases, that already had the few years doing what they were doing really well, and they were professionals,” Florence says. But for this season, a different approach was sought, and feedback from viewers at foodnetwork.com helped find it.

“People were very interested in knowing what it takes to start a food truck,” Florence explains.

“So we had this great idea this season to really reverse the process.

Instead of saying, ‘OK, here are

eight fantastic food trucks, and we’re going to race them across the country,’ here are eight teams that really want to have a food truck, that have a very compelling idea but have never done it before.”

And the twist doesn’t stop there.

“We’re giving all of them a food truck, and then, when they get eliminated, one city at a time – we take the food truck back,” he says, chuckling. It’s an important distinction, because the winners get to keep the truck, and with it all of the credibility the series gives them to fulfill their ambitions. “They’re competing for money, because we give them $50,000 – but they’re also competing for the right to be in business for themselves. ...

The pressure’s enormous, and it shows from city to city. The level of competition was never greater than in this season, and the drive, determination, the heart and soul – it’s so wonderful to watch.”

Hamptons under an alias to – as the title implies – get even with those who destroyed her family. Madeleine Stowe has a grand time as a wealthy matriarch who is squarely in the vengeance seeker’s sights but quite able to hold her own. Eva Marie Saint goes marching into an all-day TCM salute

Turner Classic Movies’ Summer Under the Stars showcases many renowned actors, and this time, part of it belongs to Eva Marie Saint.

Each August, TCM presents its festival that devotes a full day to the work of a given performer, and the actress who earned an Oscar for her movie debut opposite Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront” gets her turn Sunday, Aug. 19.

Weekend daytime host Ben Mankiewicz will comment on the afternoon attractions, while Robert Osborne introduces the evening features.

“I’ve been doing some things for TCM, and it’s been terrific,” Saint says. “All the people involved are so good, and I’m so pleased about this (tribute). You don’t sit home every day looking at your resume, but

even I was a little impressed by this list. All of the films stand on their own, and I worked with incredible directors, and all the characters are quite different.”

Here are Saint’s reflections on two films being shown during her day in the Summer Under the Stars spotlight.

“On the Waterfront” (1954): “People think I walked into that right off the streets, but I had done lots of television. My first role was applauding off camera, and I remember calling my parents and saying, ‘You won’t see me, but you’ll hear me.’ Then the next week, I was on camera ... applauding. I really started from scratch and got to see actors onstage, then I got small roles and gradually got to be the leading lady.

And I never was nervous about it, ever.

“I’m not in awe of other actors, and you might think, ‘How could you be with Marlon Brando or Cary Grant and not be?’ Some are so extraordinary, though, I do have great respect for them. And when I won the Oscar, I thought, ‘I’m going be having a baby in about two days. Will it be a boy or a girl?’ ... It was very exciting, though.”

“North by Northwest” (1959): “I found (director Alfred Hitchcock) to be such a dear man. He had an offbeat sense of humor that wasn’t obvious, and I do believe he loved actors. He had faith in them, and he just somehow knew I’d be right as the sexy spy lady. And because he knew it, I thought, ‘Sure. Why not, if he thinks so?’ ”

Do you know more about what’s in store for Walt than viewers do?

How has it been to work with so many other strong actresses on “Political Animals”?

Not really. I don’t ask. I started to get the outlines back in Season 1, and then I realized that this journey that Walt is on is a switchback. It didn’t help me as an actor, because I would read two or three or four outlines down the road, and I would learn some information that could only discolor my performance in the episode I was currently shooting.

There’s very little posturing or controlling or intimidation.

It’s much more about inclusion and team building, so I think it’s a chance for us to tell the story of how women deal differently and more directly and more practically, because we basically are practical human beings.

That’s why I’m so pleased to be playing this character. I want to be part of saying to women, “We can do this, and we need to do this, and we need to do it now.”

Q:

Then how did you know how to play the opening scene of this season, which jumped into the future?

A:

I asked (director Vince Gilligan) what I felt I needed to know in order to play that teaser. I asked him what my mood was like. Where am I? What is happening as far as specifically right now, at this point, on this day? And he did tell me enough information, and he was going on, and I said, “I got it. That’s enough for me to play it.”

Q:

Were such other film-based actresses as Glenn Close, Holly Hunter and Kyra Sedgwick inspirations in your making a move into weekly television?

A:

You know, I don’t really think like that. I was weighing a couple of movie offers, and it was really the material in this case. I do find TV very interesting, because it deals with subjects that films have sort of lost interest in ... like human relationships. I was drawn to that.

Q:

Is it good to be reteamed with Aaron Paul this season after your characters’ estrangement?

Q:

Your father, Sylvester “Pat” Weaver, created “Today” and “Tonight” while at NBC. Do you consider your television work a tribute to him?

A:

Aaron and I missed working together from an acting standpoint. It’s a case of strange bedfellows. Vince had to put us at odds, pulling us further and further apart last season, so it became an arduous ordeal for Walt to pull him back in.

Now we’re together and pick up right where we left off. It’s quite ingenious how Vince has crafted it.

A:

I grew up worshipping my father’s vision of how TV has the capability of bringing art and issues and philosophy and great drama into the home. My father has passed away, but he’d be so excited about this. This is exactly the kind of show he would believe in.
