TRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY

The Trent-Severn Waterway connects Lake Ontario to Lake Huron over a distance of more than 386 kilometers.

There are a total of 45 locks spread along the waterway, with Lock 32 located in Bobcaygeon.

In 1832, the government of Upper Canada constructed the first lock, Lock 32, in Bobcaygeon. Kawartha Settlers' Village 85 Dunn Street Bobcaygeon, ON K0M 1A0

Bobcaygeon was officially established as a village in the year 1876, earning the title of the “Hub of the Kawarthas”.

The name bob-ca-je-wan-unk is believed to have originated from the Mississauga Ojibway language. Another theory suggests that the name may have derived from the French term beau bocage, which translates to “beautiful hedged farmland”.

Thomas Need, an early settler who arrived in Bobcaygeon in 1832, is credited as the founder of the village. Need established essential facilities such as a sawmill, gristmill, and the first store

to support the growing community. In 1844, Need decided to sell his successful business ventures to Mossom Boyd before returning to his home country of England. Boyd then expanded the operation into a thriving logging enterprise, eventually becoming the third-largest logging business in Upper Canada.

The prosperity brought by Boyd’s enterprise attracted more settlers to the Bobcaygeon region, leading to its growth into one of the largest communities within the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Kawartha Dairy

Over 85 Years of Tradition & Quality

A long history of memories, tradition and family values are at the heart of Kawartha Dairy. Proud to be 100% Canadian-owned, still operated by our family in Bobcaygeon.

Ever since our parents and grandparents Jack and Ila Crowe started Kawartha Dairy in 1937, we have been proud to use fresh milk and cream, right from local farmers. We also pack our products within a day of the dairy farm. We’re proud to still make our delicious, rich, and creamy, premium ice cream the traditional way.

In the beginning, we delivered milk by horse and wagon, washed milk bottles by hand and used ice from the lake as our refrigeration system. Our operations have certainly grown but we still make all our products right in Bobcaygeon.

Our Bobcaygeon store is just a short walk from downtown, offering over 45 ice cream flavours and countless memories. With flavours like Moose Tracks, Salty Caramel Truffle, and Mint Chip, we have something for everyone.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Bobcaygeon or at any of our eleven stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support.
