Paper Cuts On Purpose

In 2006, the television program W5 featured a segment called, “The Pursuit of Happiness.” It was based on a North American study of self-described happy people. The goal was to discover what, if any, specific characteristics were common among these folks. The results were then added to those gathered by the U.S. based psychologist in her 10-year research project. The subjects were neither privileged nor problem-free; their net worth didn’t factor in at any point. They willingly shared their philosophies on life, living, personal challenges, losses, accomplishments, perspective, and attitude. Findings revealed that genuinely happy people shared numerous characteristics and values. Among them were optimism, spirituality, love of friends and family, goals, standards, helpfulness, generosity, gratitude, and forgiveness. It’s probably safe to say the conclusion remains much the same seven years after the study. The one ingredient I would add is purpose. Purpose is a big deal. Students of life, students of lifelong

education, students about to begin or resume formal education, eventually – hopefully – learn it’s important to attach a purpose to every day we’re given. If that purpose involves helping someone else to learn how to be better at something, to overcome an obstacle, to go forward… move right to the head of the class. If you are in a leadership role – especially as a parent or mentor – it’s your opportunity and responsibility to help. One way is to help them learn how to think. (How – not what – to think.) Once a person learns how to think, it becomes possible to open the mind to all kinds of possibilities and purposes. One way or another, we are all teachers. We’re all students. I like Sydney J. Harris’ view: “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” You can’t make somebody else happy but you can teach the lessons, instill the values, and support the endeavors. You can be the reflection of open-mindedness and wonder, be the example of one who lives a purposeful life. You can forgive yourself if you don’t always get it right. The wise person is the one who turns a mirror into a window. Never cease to seek wisdom. That, in itself, is purpose.

Dunsford Tower Site

At the August 13 Council meeting there were two deputations presented to Council regarding an application for approval of a 45-meter selfsupported internet telecommunications tower on property located at 2189 Thurstonia Road. As you can imagine there was one presentation for approval by Xplornet Communications, Inc. (Les Narday and Jim Pine) and one against the application (Ken Ryall and Byron Luther). The essence of both presentations was the disparity related to the level of radiation that would emanate from the tower. Xplornet believes that the

NOTICE OF PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE CONCERNING THE COMPREHENSIVE ZONING BY-LAW UPDATE

TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Trent Lakes will hold a further Public Open House to present the draft updated Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the Municipality of Trent Lakes, under the provisions of Section 34(12) of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990. The Public Open House will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Cavendish Community Centre, 18 Community Complex Drive, Trent Lakes. The draft updated Comprehensive Zoning By-law will be available for review and members of the public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments on the document. Attendees are also encouraged to review the mapping to ensure that their properties are correctly zoned. Any person may attend the Public Open House to review and ask questions about the proposed draft Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the Municipality of Trent Lakes. A statutory Public Meeting under Section 34(12) of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, was held on August 13, 2013. Notice was given in accordance with Section 34(13) and (14) of the Planning Act. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Municipality of Trent Lakes before the by-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the Council of the Municipality of Trent Lakes to the Ontario Municipal Board. Additional information and a copy of the draft updated Comprehensive Zoning By-law are available for review at the Municipal Office at 701 County Road 36, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at the Municipality of Trent Lakes website.

level of radiation is no more than what would come from a personal cell phone. As well, they meet all Power Protocol requirements and those of Health Canada. The tower would be in a wooded area on the property and 110 meters from Thurstonia Road and 35/40 meters from the nearest residence. On the other side of the coin, Ryall suggested that Health Canada’s information related to radiation is out of date, the placement of the tower in a wooded area is irrelevant when the tower is 45 meters high as he has never seen a 150 foot tree and the owner of the property is rarely there while they are full time residents and the radiation exposure would be constant. According to the group opposed to the tower their numbers are increasing upwards of 300 to date. Councillor Pat Warren, Ward 13, asked Xplornet if they had considered upgrading the tower currently atop the Bobcaygeon water tower. Narday responded that even if there was the possibility of an upgrade it would still be insufficient to provide the coverage necessary. At the moment there are 1322 residences that have inadequate internet coverage and this tower would alleviate the problem. One disturbing element is that Ryall and Luther allege that Xplornet have already begun the initial work on the property and yet the project has not been approved. If true, this could be an issue. In the end, Council approved a motion to receive the application but decided to defer any decision until September 24th.

Snow Clearing on Arterial Roads

Since 2010, attempts to hire qualified, seasonal, equipment operators for winter control activities has had limited success and has resulted in the hiring of contractors in an emergency capacity (typically in late November after several recruiting attempts). In an effort to achieve the best possible value for the citizens of the City of Kawartha Lakes and to achieve and maintain the required winter maintenance levels of service, the Public Works department has opted to contract six (6) arterial plow routes over a five-year term. The arterial routes selected are long rural high traffic routes best suited to contracted services. One item in the Request for Tender was that trucks used to perform winter road maintenance operations were to be eight years old or newer, starting with the 2013 winter season. As an example, three of the six trucks supplied by Fairview Trucking,

met this criteria. While a couple of Councillors wondered why this clause was necessary, Director of Public Works, Michelle Hendry replied that the age of the vehicle was one way to ensure that work is not interrupted due to a vehicle breaking down. The goal of the exercise is to clear arterial roads as quickly as possible in a cost effective manner. Urban, rural residential, rural lower volume roads and the balance of the arterial routes will remain “in-house” serviced by the City’s trained and experienced equipment operators.

A Different Kind of Show

If you’re looking for something interesting and unusual for a Saturday in September, plan to visit the 36th annual Kawartha Carving Competition on September 14. Located in the Bobcaygeon Curling Club on Mansfield Street, the Show is a joint effort between the carving clubs from Buckhorn, Bobcaygeon and Lindsay. This year, organizers are anticipating some 75 to 100 carvers from across Ontario with up to 200 carvings of all kinds expected. Classes range from beginner to expert and categories cover all sorts of entries from waterfowl, fish, relief carvings and caricatures to wood burning, chip carving and animals of all kinds. Entry fee is only $3 per person and children under 12 accompanied by an adult get in free. The doors open at 8 am and close at 4:30 pm. A great way to spend a day – something very different, interesting and educational. Check out the Competition’s web site at kawarthacarvingcompetition.org for more details or call Doug Hodgins, Chair at 705.738.4600. Submitted by Ross Fitchett

Free Flight Day September 21

COPA For Kids Aviation Program puts young people between the ages of 8 and 17 and COPA pilots together to show what aviation is all about. The Kawartha Lakes flight Club is also “COPA Flight 101” Lindsay. COPA means “Canadian Owners and Pilot Association”, an organization that has branches (Flights) all across Canada to promote general aviation. Pilots give their time and free use of their aircraft just to see the look of amazement on the kids’ faces during and after the flight. Many kids say, “I want to be a pilot” as soon as they get out of the plane. In addition to the experience and the thrill of flight, kids receive a basic knowledge of how an aircraft operates during a ground school conducted by experienced pilots before the flight. It takes many dedicated volunteers to put on an event of this size with about 150 kids and 14 aircraft. Kawartha Lakes Flying Club sponsors this event, in co-operation with the Kawartha Lakes Municipal Airport. After the twenty-minute flight around the beautiful Kawartha Lakes area, kids receive a certificate that shows the name of the person who has had the true adventure of flight by participating in the “COPA

Cruisefest. For 15 years, this Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce signature event has reminded the “older” generations of their rich heritage of internal combustion engine-powered vehicles and educated the “younger” generations about a time when, had they lived then, they could have identified any car’s make, model and year as it turned the street corner a block away. They would have practised the art of “speed shifting” the gears to “peel” away and screech down the road, all the while looking in their rear-view mirrors to spot the “fuzz.” Exciting, fun times at 30 miles per hour and 35-cent-a-gallon “regular-test” gasoline. To be held this year at the Fairgrounds on Sunday, September 15th, the 15th Annual Bobcaygeon Cruisefest will, weather permitting, attract up to the

usual more than 250 antique and classic vehicles from near and far. Their drivers are presented with local-flavour “goody bags” and awarded 21 trophies for being the best or topmost in a number of classes. Aside from wandering the fairgrounds, hot dogs and colas in hand, enjoying recorded yesterday “pops” and admiring the owners’ restoration and maintenance handiwork, the public can buy draw tickets for a variety of interesting prizes. While it isn’t possible to name all the day’s helping hands, here’s a big thank you to the committee: Norm Matthews (Trail’s End Lodge) as chairperson, Joe Pollard, Cheryl Thurston (BMO), both Chamber directors, Rich Colter, Larry Phillips (Phillips Motorsport) and son Greg Phillips, Gord Zimmerman, and Chamber office manager Ruthanne Wilson. The Crafty Ewe Art and Craft Supplies Knitting/Crocheting Jewellery-Making Workshops/Classes and much, much more!

Aha! So does everyone who visits The Crafty Ewe. According to owner, Tarja Haapala, The Crafty Ewe was born of “inspiration and frustration.” An avid artisan and crafter herself, Tarja found it difficult to find supplies both locally and at reasonable prices. The solution was to open a store and make it distinctive. The Crafty Ewe is a creation in itself. It’s a place to discover the supplies you need for your creative projects while you gather ideas for new ones, too. Perhaps you’ll pick up some different skills, or swap ideas with someone who’s just as enthusiastic. You’ll find yarns for knitting and crochet supplies, plus all you need for beading and other jewelry making, paper crafting, fine art and general crafts. You can join a group, suggest a class, or book a birthday party. There’s a monthly Pinterestaholics Group for participants who like to choose a project to work on, even if it isn’t a craft. Knit and crochet groups meet monthly. The Creative Kids class is for children 3 to 6 years – Wednesdays from 9 to 10 am, youngsters experiment with a different craft each week. Classes are just $5 per child accompanied by a caregiver. In September, join the 5-week Folk Art Painting courses. Beginners meet Tuesday nights; Intermediates on Thursday nights. Or buy supplies and indulge in a stained glass workshop, too. See www.thecraftyewe.org for details on workshops, classes, supplies, line of handcrafted jewelry and more. The Crafty Ewe. Inspiring!

Just don’t be too pushy! Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Taurus, you are a partner for life! Dependable, reliable, solid, loyal and faithful, showering your loved one with gifts and luxuries. Wow! Who’s the lucky person who latches onto you? Gemini (May 22 – June 22) Geminis are ruled by the planet Mercury, the winged messenger, who imparts rationality and reasoning on all Geminis. Perhaps you could be the emissary of levelheadedness and wisdom among your friends and family. It may be well needed at this time. Cancer (June 23 – July 23) “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention,” Oscar Wilde. Please remember this. You may know people with great ideas who brag about them constantly, but you, dear Cancer, are making huge differences by your everyday simple doings. Leo (July 24 – Aug. 23) Llamas, lollipops, and lollapaloozas! Oh, my! All those wonderful things that start with the letter ‘l’, just like Leo! Enjoy the rest of the summer because lots of good things are coming your way. Oh, and the name ‘Leith’ will have special meaning for you, too. Virgo (Aug. 24 – Sept. 23) Time. Ah, the everelusive object of our desires! We suggest, Virgo, that you budget your time. What things do you need to do at certain times each day? Create a space for those times. Next, what are your priorities? Block these out. Finally, in the remaining hours, make time for the things you want to do. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Your views are important, Libra. Remember to state them calmly, keeping emotions out of the equation, and they will be better-received, to the advantage of everyone.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Is there a mouse in your house? Some small little thing that keeps gnawing away at your soul, keeping you from fully enjoying life? It’s time to figure out how to rid yourself of this annoying fella once and for all. Get out the cheese and traps – or whatever it takes! And toss him in the backyard for the cat to munch on. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Is profit what it’s all about? Yes, we enjoy the things that money brings, but at what cost is the chase? Now may be the time to have a heart-to-heart discussion – with yourself -- about your life objectives, dear Sag. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Set-backs are to be expected, dear Capricorn. Please don’t be discouraged. You’ve made it through them before and you will again. As the saying goes: If you stumble, make it part of the dance! Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Wouldn’t it be lovely to have our very own crystal ball? To see everything that lies ahead of us? Well, we’re not sure. We’d have to see the downfalls as well as the good times, and we don’t think that would serve any purpose. Just enjoy the real world for what it’s worth, right now, Aquarius. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Summer may be drawing to a close, but nature’s bounty is still all around us – so use it to show your love! Send your significant other a bouquet of wild flowers. During Victorian times, this was a common practice with each flower having a special meaning. Yellow coreopsis, for example, meant “always cheerful”; carnation “admiration”, and phlox “hope for sweet dreams”. Be a romantic, Pisces! We dare you!

Before Putting Your Key in the Ignition: Consider These Car Buying Tips A car ad has caught your eye and you are planning to go to the dealer to see more. Before stepping on the gas on this purchase, take the time to consider a few points. Start by making a list of your needs so that you can choose something that you like that is within your budget. As you review your options, whether you’re getting a new, used or leased vehicle, think about your annual mileage, depreciation costs, the resale value, and how often you are likely to change your vehicle. To avoid getting into debt, review your budget and determine how much you can spend on payments for a car purchase or lease. Don’t forget to include all other costs, such as insurance, registration, driver’s licence renewal, parking, winter tires, gas and maintenance. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s (FCAC) free online Budget Calculator can make this task easier. Industry Canada’s website provides information and advice for consumers who are about to purchase a vehicle. Whether you are borrowing to purchase or leasing a vehicle, take the time to shop around at a number of financial institutions and dealerships to compare interest rates, payments and administrative

or contract cancellation costs. Any money you have saved for your purchase will shorten your amortization period and reduce your interest costs. Lastly, before signing a contract, make sure that you read it carefully and ask questions in order to clearly understand its contents. FCAC’s tip sheet Before you sign any contract: 10 things you need to know has other suggestions. This tip sheet and the Budget Calculator can be found on the Agency’s Web site at Itpaystoknow.gc.ca.

Julie Hauser, Media Relations Officer FCAC is an independent government agency mandated to ensure both that consumers have the information and financial skills they need to find the financial product or service that best meets their needs. We strive to provide Canadian consumers with objective advice in order to help them better manage their personal finances. Through communication activities and outreach initiatives we reach out to Canadians in order to give them the tools they need to make informed financial decisions. Since its creation in 2001, FCAC has been a pioneer in developing simple and easy-to-use financial tools, which are available on our website.

Coboconk News Diamond Jubilee Award in Coboconk

Morgan Dollack was honoured for her hard work and dedication to the Sea Cadet program and the Kawartha Lakes Navy League Branch. She says, “It had been a rocky couple of years with declining enrollment for cadets and officers and the threat of taking the program out of Coboconk. It was not an option to remove the program. I was a former cadet and the program helped shape me into the successful person I am today.” Morgan was nominated by Tyson Ross (officer with RCSCC 314 Hood). Left to right: Mayor Ric McGee, Emmett Yeo (Ward 2 Counsellor), Terry Seal (Morgan’s Husband), Morgan Dollack (Recipient), Barry Devolin (MP), Laurie Scott (MPP), and Jewel Cunningham of the Trent Severn Waterway.

Coboconk & District Lions Club announced the 2013 Citizen of the Year recipients at their recent Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction. LLoyd Faulkner and Max Greer were named as joint recipients this year. These men are truly “unsung heroes” who take great pride in their community. They are involved with the Coboconk Horticultural Society, the Historical Society, the Train Station Restoration Committee, and are always there to lend a helping hand at Lions events and other local activities. On their own accord, they regularly trim the brush and grass throughout the village in areas overlooked by the City.

Sea Cadets

Carry on the Tradition After a couple of years of decline, the northern Kawartha Lakes community has been working to reestablish their Sea Cadet Corps in Coboconk, 314 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Hood. The corps currently has a small number of cadets, and an eager staff who are excited to see the corps grow and thrive as it once did in this community. The sea cadet program started in Coboconk in 1991 and has positively influenced the lives of hundreds of Kawartha Lakes youth since its inception. It’s a free program for youth ages 12 to 18. Activities such as marksmanship, sailing, seamanship and leadership are only a fraction of the exciting training offered by this program. The cadet program encourages youth to become active and contributing members of their community, and develops valuable life- and work-related skills such as self-confidence, teamwork, leadership and respect for others. During the summer months, cadets may have the opportunity to participate in summer training courses at Cadet Summer Training Centres across the country. Summer training provides instruction in specialties such as music, small boat operation, sailing and drill. Youth aged 12-18 who are interested in checking out what the Sea Cadet Program has to offer, may visit the corps on their training night, which is Tuesday evenings, from Labour Day to the end of June between 6:30 and 9 pm at the Coboconk Legion, on the corner of Hwy 35 and Hwy 48. The corps may be contacted at 705.344.0041. Austin McGregor, Garnett Mountain, Jack DeVos and Daniel Rouxel

Are we there yet? Whenever our family gets together, the topic of conversation inevitably becomes things our children remember from their childhood and especially summers spent in Nova Scotia. Just as soon as school finished we packed our little “KCar” to the roof and set out for Nova Scotia, 1000 miles away, with minimal stops for gas, food and washroom breaks. To them Nova Scotia was 7th Heaven, Cloud 9, Nirvana, Utopia and Over the Moon. It meant playing baseball with cousins, riding Grampy's ATV, going to the beach, staying up as late as you wanted, playing Nanny's well-worn board games, collecting and sometimes smashing the eggs, picking blueberries and living on peanut butter and jam and grilled cheese sandwiches. Each summer our journey would begin when we left Peterborough very early in the morning to follow Highway 7 to Marmora and then turn south towards Belleville and the 401. At one point between Marmora and Stirling, one of them would announce, “I see Nanny's house.” That was fight number one. I had to tell them that we couldn't possibly see Nanny's house. Next came the complaint, “She's on my half of the seat.” We placed a Coleman Cooler between them to remedy that. It wasn't long before another problem cropped up. “She's looking out my window.” That problem had no solution. Then someone said, “He's smiling at me.” “What's wrong with that?” I asked. “He doesn't mean it.” I couldn't fix that either. While by nature I am a very patient person, I was coming unglued to the point I opened my mouth and my mother's words and the words of every mother since time began came out, “Just wait 'til you have children of your own. Eventually, we arrived and another summer vacation began. That began in 1982 and the tradition continued until about 2000. Now in 2013, we have come full circle. Our daughter and her husband have made the trip twice with their first child. He has nobody to fight with - yet. Still, I have to be honest about something. A teensy weensy part of me can’t wait for my words to come out of my daughter’s mouth. We want to continue to make memories with our family. Oscar Wilde wrote, “Memory ... is the diary that we all carry about with us.” Let’s fill its pages from cover to cover.

Kawartha Cooks

Featuring Christopher Tuberdyke So, here’s the thing about potato salad recipes: out of the hundreds of variations out there, everyone seems to have at least one (or know someone who has one) in their arsenal. This is mine. Adding the avocado sounds odd, but it adds a really great creamy depth without piling on more dressing. Want to make it lighter? Swap out some of the mayo or sour cream with Greek yogurt.

Potato Salad with Arugula and Avocados Serves 6 or more

3 pounds white or red skinned potatoes 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 4 radishes, diced 2 1/2 cups baby arugula 2 avocados, diced 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tsp Dijon 2 tablespoons fresh chives, plus more for garnish Salt/fresh pepper 1. P lace potatoes in a pan just covered with salted water. Boil until fork tender-about 15 minutes or so. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. 2. M eanwhile, whisk together mayo, sour cream, Dijon, salt, pepper, and chives in a large bowl then set aside. 3. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, give them about a 1” dice. Toss diced potatoes in the dressing. Gently fold in arugula, radishes, and cherry tomatoes. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Before serving, check for seasoning and fold in the diced avocado. Snip on some fresh chives and enjoy!

The Ontario Water Sector Strategy proposes to make Ontario a “a leading North American site for new water and wastewater technology innovation, demonstration and commercialization” The City of Kawartha Lakes is proud to play a role in this strategy. With the formation of WRAIN, we are working collaboratively with organizations throughout Kawartha Lakes to meet the demands of the water sector in order to support economic growth.

Natural Shoreline Protection Nobody wants to come up to the lake for some well-earned relaxation and have to deal with shoreline issues such as erosion, Canada geese, aquatic plants, or blue-green algae in the water. But these are common issues, often made worse by traditional landscaping practices, such as manicured lawns right to the water and break walls. That’s why more and more people in the Kawarthas are simply letting their shorelines grow. As root systems expand, they take hold of the soil and help stabilize the bank. Above ground, the plants deter Canada geese by removing wide open, cut grass. The thick vegetation also filters nutrient rich sediments in surface water runoff that would otherwise end up in the lake. Getting started on natural shoreline protection is easy, and will give you more time to relax by the water. Just stop cutting your lawn to the water’s edge, even if you have a break wall. Leave at least 3 to 6 feet from the shoreline uncut. As it grows, pull out any weeds and invasive species. To enhance your “no-mow zone,” plant native shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers that will grow deep roots. By allowing plants to grow on your shoreline, the benefits they provide will grow, too. Water sector jobs are well paying and can’t be outsourced overseas. For every demonstration project we support in Kawartha Lakes, there are economic spin-offs as these companies bring customers and staff to our area for training and marketing purposes. Please join me in congratulating the team at Water & Wastewater for taking the lead on installing floating wetlands – Kawartha Lakes is being recognized for this outstanding innovation and as a result, we now have another 60+ companies looking to work with us.

34th Annual Canada/US Walleye Tournament Here we Grow Again!

In preparation for next year’s Tournament May 23, 24 and 25th, 2014, we are pleased to announce the addition of 10 New Team Positions. This addition will consist of two 5 Team segments. The first 5 Team openings will be available to teams which both members have not fished in this Tournament before in the last 2 years! (We hope to encourage new anglers to participate and support our fishing/ tourism industry). The second 5 Team openings will be dedicated to Anglers specifically travelling from the United States to attend this event! We have a strong mandate to attract our American friends back to this long time fun – fishing rivalry! These 2 New Groups will have and extended registration date of Apr. 30, 2014. If these new groups are not filled by that date, we will utilize the waiting list created at registration time. This year we will accept registrations online only. Starting on October 15, 2013 at 9:00 am local time ONLINE Registrations will be open! There will be no registrations accepted in person at the Chamber Office in Bobcaygeon.

Because of the high interest in our event and factoring in that 50 Teams chose to Pre-Register at last May’s Event, we have only 75 Team Spots (+5 New + 5 US ) available. This format will allow the most fair and equitable solution for those interested in participating from near and far alike. The online process will only allow your payment to go through if all fields are filled in! This will eliminate the slow registrations at next year’s event as well. There will be a minor charge to cover the Paypal fees. We will endeavour to get the Online Counter shut down as soon as we hit the 75 Teams, but in the event additional teams get falsely “registered” they will be contacted and given the choice to have their money returned immediately, or become the first few in the standby list of anglers! All positions will be assigned by the date/time/minutes/seconds printout from the e-mail system thereby insuring it was on a first in basis. Register at www.bobcaygeon.org/ CanUSWalleyeTournament.html. This website address will also be used to retrieve the Rules and Regulations for 2014 and provide the ”All Fields” information requirements to ensure you don’t miss out when the system won’t let you register!

Stroke Survivor Support Group Comes to Bobcaygeon For people dealing with the challenges of having suffered a stroke, or for those caring for someone who has had a stroke, a monthly support group offers them the chance them to know that they are not alone. Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes recently began offering its Stroke Survivor Support Group in Bobcaygeon. The program has been running in Lindsay for several years. The Stroke Survivor Support Group is a positive experience for participants, says Margot Fitzpatrick, Clinical Program Manager with Community Care’s

The program offers support and encouragement for stroke survivors, their families and caregivers, and gives people the chance to meet other stroke survivors and share stories with others who understand what challenges they experience. The support group takes place on the last Thursday of each month at Specialty Care Case Manor in Bobcaygeon (28 Boyd St.) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. It is open to any residents who have experienced stroke or who are caring for someone who is recovering from a stroke. This can be due to lack of blood supply caused by embolism, or because of a hemorrhage. Strokes can cause permanent neurological damage, paralysis, complications and even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. Hints for Shin Splints

Hints for shin splints – try saying that three times fast. It’s not easy! Like any tongue twister, one needs to practice it slowly at first and build up to speed gradually. Well, it’s much the same way with actual shin splints – that is if one wishes to avoid them. This is because shin splints are especially common in people who decide suddenly to become active without conditioning gradually or putting enough forethought into things like proper footwear and their body’s biomechanics. Before long, they experience that telltale dull ache in the front part of the lower leg, sometimes during exercise, sometimes afterwards, or both. For those who make the mistake of trying to “run or play through it,” the pain can become far more severe and can even result in bone injury. So, just what is a shin splint and are my feet to blame? Shin splints are an inflammation of the tissues that run across the front of the lower leg and sometimes involve the tibia bone itself. They can be grouped into two causes. The first is high-impact activities such as running excessively on hard surfaces. People with rigid, high-arched

feet are particularly susceptible to shin splints from these kinds of activities because this foot type provides very little shock absorption. A highquality, shock-absorbing shoe is an absolute must. Properly prescribed custom orthotics will also address the biomechanical issues. The second cause of shin splints results from too much stress on the muscles of the lower limbs. This can happen from stop-and-start sports like tennis or soccer, or running downhill, on slanted surfaces, or on very soft surfaces such as beach sand. People with flat feet are very prone to shin splints from these kinds of activities due excessive pronation (your muscles “over-fire” to keep the feet from flattening too much). Here, a good anti-pronation shoe is critical and custom orthotics prescribed by a chiropodist can resolve or significantly correct the over-pronation. Remember, these are just a few “hints.” The foot conditions that involve shin splints also cause plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and knee, hip and back pain. Your chiropodist is the foot expert who can provide the advice and care needed to prevent and treat shin splints and all of these foot-related conditions effectively.

Here are a few tips on packing safe school lunches to help keep all your children happy and healthy. • Use insulated food containers to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. • For hot foods, fill your insulated container with boiling water and let it sit for a few minutes. BRUSH UP on BASICS Dentists say that the most important part of tooth care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Give Plaque the Brush-Off To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria that coats the teeth. The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps to keep them healthy and prevent gum disease. Brushing and flossing are the most important things that you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Toothpastes contain abrasives, detergents, and foaming agents. Fluoride, the most common active ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents cavities. So you should always be sure your toothpaste contains fluoride. About 1 person in 10 has a tendency to accumulate tartar quickly. Tartar is plaque in a hardened form that is more damaging and difficult to remove. Using anti-tartar toothpastes and mouthwashes, as well as spending extra time brushing the teeth near the salivary glands (the inside of the lower front teeth and the outside of the upper back teeth) may slow the development of new tartar. Facts on Flossing Brushing is important but it won’t remove the plaque and particles of food between your teeth, under the gumline, or under braces. You’ll need to floss these spaces at least once a day. The type of floss you choose depends on how much space you have between your teeth. Dentists usually recommend unwaxed floss because it’s thinner and easier to slide through small spaces. However, studies have shown that there is no major difference in the effectiveness based on the type of floss used. Questions? Talk to your dental professionals. They’re eager to help you!

Energy Efficiency Tips For Students With another school year quickly approaching, it’s a great opportunity for students living away from home for the first time to develop good energy saving habits to reduce electricity bills and save money. To help students become more energy efficient throughout the school year, Hydro One has a handy list of tips: • Find out whether your electricity usage will be included in your rent or whether you will be billed separately. • If you will be billed separately, check whether Time-of-Use pricing applies to you. This pricing plan will help you determine when the cost of electricity is lower throughout the day to better manage your electricity use habits. If you prefer studying late at night, you’re in luck as the lowest charging rate of electricity is at this time. To track your TOU electricity use, sign up for My Account today. • Turn off lights when they are not needed, especially if you know you are going to be out for the day. • Turn off your computer at night and use built in energy savings standby and hibernate functions when you are not using it throughout the day. • Be sure to turn off your television when not in use. LCD and LED models are the most energy efficient so be aware of older, hand-me-down television sets that could be draining your energy usage.

• Air conditioning can use up a lot of electricity. In order to save money open windows and consider using a fan, especially during peak hours. • Unplug your electronic devices when they are not in use to avoid what is known as Phantom Power. Phantom power is described as energy consumption that is still being drawn from household gadgets, electronic devices and appliances while they are switched off but plugged in. Plugging your appliances into a power bar can reduce unnecessary power use. • During the winter months, keep doors and windows closed, dress warmly, hang thick-lined curtains to keep the heat in and install weather stripping around the doors. This will allow you to minimize the use of electric heaters which use up a lot of energy. • Find out how your hot water is heated. If your unit uses a hot water heater, the amount of hot water you use will impact your electricity bill. Although you may enjoy taking long hot showers at home, you will find these showers quickly add up when paying your bill. Also ensure that you have your landlord fix any leaking taps to avoid sending extra money down the drain. • If you have a washing machine in your unit, try washing your clothing in cold water and during off-peak hours. Clothes dryers also consume a lot of energy so try and air-dry your clothing over a balcony or in the washroom if possible. Drying clothing during off-peak hours can also help you save money. • If possible, install compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) or LED lights which use significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs. Also consider using lamps to light your work area instead of lighting the whole room. • If you’re heading home for the holidays be sure to turn off your lights and unplug electronics before you leave.

Kinmount Fair August 30th - September 1st Mayor’s Message It is that time of year again when we celebrate the Kinmount Fair and the unofficial end to summer in Kawartha Lakes. Within days, we will be sending the kids back to school and settling back into normal routines. Following a very busy and eventful summer, we encourage residents from across Kawartha Lakes to spend a day or the entire weekend to come out and support local agriculture at the 2013 Kinmount Fair. Horse shows, livestock shows, poultry shows and so much more! The best of agriculture in the area will be on full display. Bring the kids and spend the day taking a stroll through the midway and listening to the live entertainment. The excitement of the day leads to even more excitement as the sun goes down and the horse pulls and demolition derby begins. Each day brings something new to offer everyone of all ages. As always, get there early because the grandstands will be packed for the truck and tractor pulls, and the demolition derby. To top it all off, Canadian country music star, Chad Brownlee will grace the stage on Saturday. Plan to make the Kinmount Fair your end of summer your family tradition and I look forward to seeing you there.

people that live in the town stay in a trailer on the fairgrounds, so they don’t miss anything. As a native of Kinmount, I am proud to say that my family, along with many other families from the area, have been actively involved in the Kinmount Fair for generations. Residents of Kinmount measure the late summer in BF and AF, Before the Fair and After the Fair. My father Bill Scott, Member of Parliament for many years, was famous for talking about and promoting the Kinmount Fair, often being called “Mr. Kinmount Fair.” I have performed a number of volunteer functions over the years, including the shovelling of horse manure, a skill which has served me well. It is a special spirit found in Kinmount when the fair happens. We put our best foot forward and want everyone to come, have fun and be entertained. Thank you to all the volunteers, neighbouring fair boards and organizations that make it a reality.

LEAL, KENNETH Kenneth Leal passed from this life, after a lengthy battle with illness on August 16th, 2013 at the age of 61. Ken had a lifelong passion for the water, fast boats, cars and the music of the Beatles. He excelled in the art of negotiating a good bargain and believed everyone needed to recycle more. Ken loved life, but above all loved spending time with his family, friends and his dogs Kosha and Shelby. Ken was born on July 14th, 1952 in Peterborough Ontario, son of the late Melvin and Mildred Leal. He would often reminisce of a wonderful childhood and memories of summers spent at the family cottage on Koshabog Lake. Ken will be most deeply missed by his devoted wife, Catherine Leal. His memory will be cherished by his precious daughter, Becky Stevens of Peterborough and his grandsons, Luke and Cole; brother Gary Leal of Newmarket; sister Ruth Downer of Peterborough and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. At his request, there will be no funeral. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family ask that you make a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Arrangements provided by Monk Funeral Home, 6 Helen Street, Bobcaygeon, (705-738-3222 or 866-393-0063). Messages of condolence, donations and photos may be shared at www.monkfuneralhome.com
