Ontario Houseboat Capital The journey begins in the heart of the Kawarthas on the beautiful Trent Severn Waterway, the Houseboat Capital of Ontario. Between the locks of Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon, the two most popular locks on the waterway, there are three houseboat rental operators with more than 50 houseboats available for rent. From the bare necessities to luxurious comfort and executive style, there is a perfect option for everyone. Seasoned renters appreciate the fact that the houseboat offers the comforts of cottage living with a constant and spectacular waterfront view. Family and friends converge annually to eat like kings and queens, and play like kids. Swimming, stargazing, fishing and visiting the friendly communities, and all they have to offer,

provides endless entertainment. The best part is visiting the locks on the Trent-Severn Waterway. There is an ongoing parade of boats manoeuvring through the locks; such a display cannot be found anywhere else. Local boaters who seek the best ice cream around tie off on the lock wall and walk into town. Meeting the Great Lake Loopers who are also enjoying a journey of a lifetime, provides opportunity to share boating experiences. Boaters from around Ontario find public and private launch ramps so they can launch and go on day trips. There are always great people to meet who are like-minded and enjoying a rental houseboat. Boat watching and people watching are favourite pastimes and a great way to enjoy the Kawarthas.

Marinas

Who can resist the lure of the Kawartha Lakes region, when it’s just over an hour northeast of Toronto and has over 200 square miles of controlled water levels between the locks at Bobcaygeon and Buckhorn to enjoy? Linked by the scenic Trent-Severn Waterway, there are all

kinds of recreational choices for boaters, paddlers and anglers alike. In need of repairs and parts? Many of the marinas in the area offer shop bays, hydraulic lifts and experienced and certified technicians for mechanical and electrical boat repairs. A large local inventory, docking, slips, golf and dining are just some of the amenities around the area. Modern facilities are open 7 days a week. Gordon Yacht Harbour Marina facilitates seasonal and transient boat docking on the Trent-Severn Waterway in the heart of the Village of Bobcaygeon, below Lock 32 on Pigeon Lake. The marina claims to have the longest and best boating season available in the Kawarthas and Trent System.

Boaters Safe ‘n Sound

Boaters from around the world travel to the area to enjoy some of the best recreational boating in North America and to experience two of the world’s highest hydraulic lift locks. The friendly and extremely knowledgeable lock personnel are true community ambassadors who love to tell the story of the history and culture of the TrentSevern Waterway. The locals are fantastic people in each community; they are the raison d’être in the Kawarthas. Boaters always have a good time when safety is tantamount to the experience. Rental houseboats do not break speed limits and, coming in too

close creates unsafe boating conditions for the occupants. Boaters must always be considerate and know the rules of the water before setting out. Pass with care and caution and remember there is a lot of water out there. Keep a safe distance from other boats as you pass because the wake and wash from boats can cause personal injury and property damage. Slow down, relax and enjoy the view. Be safe on the water as you create memories that will last a lifetime.

It’s A Lifestyle

Have you ever stepped off your lawn and escaped into a relaxing and exciting place that banishes the stresses of everyday life? Ah, you must be a boater! If you love spending time outdoors, boating may be for you. Even the sights and sounds are different: the wiz of a fishing line as it’s cast out from the boat, splashes of waves, and shrieks of laughter as kids twirl around the lake on a tube, the water lapping against the hull at dusk as you settle down for a night on the lake. There are hundreds of lakes and rivers within reach to explore, and a plethora of sports and hobbies to enjoy. If you ask a dozen different boaters what they like about boating, you’ll get twelve different answers. One commonality is that boating bridges generations and brings families and friends together. Boating offers benefits to kids of 10 Explore Bobcaygeon 2013

all ages: fishing, swimming, tubing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, camping, cruising or chilling out and enjoying the sun, stars and each others’ company. From bowriders to fish and skis, cruisers to dayboats, pontoons to deckboats and sport-specific boats intended for waterskiing, wakeboarding and fishing, there is a boat suited just for you. Buckeye Marine is an internationally award-winning, family-owned and operated boat dealership that has been located in Bobcaygeon since 1949. Our full sales and service dry land facility is located in the Kawartha Lakes region between Pigeon and Sturgeon lakes on the Trent-Severn Waterway. As boaters, we appreciate relaxing, carefree days on the lake. Bring your family out and join ours. After all, boating is not only our business it’s our lifestyle, too!

National Historic Site Lock 32

Bobcaygeon’s Lock 32 is clearly one of the busiest locks on the Trent-Severn Waterway. That’s a lot of activity considering the route extends 386 km. History tells us the lock was designed by Frederick Preston Rubidge and constructed in 1833. The original boasted a 973-foot canal cut on the southern shore of the Big Bob Channel, between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes. The lower, eastern end had a wooden lock 28 feet long, 28 feet wide, with 4 ¼ feet of water on the lower sill. In 1855, a stone lock was constructed. With a lift of more than seven feet, the

replacement measured 134 by 33 feet. A new swing bridge, dam and timber slide were installed, compliments of the government, to accommodate the developing timber trade. By 1923, the Trent-Severn Waterway was open from Trenton to Georgian Bay. The lock we see now was constructed around that time frame and six years later, designated a National Historic Site. To boaters, local residents and visitors of all kinds, Lock 32 in Bobcaygeon is known for its parkland, picnic sites, boardwalk, marine facilities and proximity to everything this beautiful village offers.

History and Heritage

Our heritage and history are richly known from the first lock being built in 1833, giving us the bragging rights to the birthplace of the famous Trent Canal that joins the pathways to explore Kawartha Lakes and beyond. There are many events planned throughout the year to help visitors and residents learn and understand how the area became a premier tourist attraction for boaters, land roamers and cottagers. To this day, we continue to learn more about the pioneers and native communities

Kawartha Dairy: Over 75 Years of Tradition & Quality A cottage country destination for generations of vacationers and cottage goers, those that have experienced a visit to Kawartha Dairy would certainly agree that summer just isn’t complete without a few Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones. Along with the Bobcaygeon outlet, other Kawartha Dairy stores are located in Minden, Lindsay, Bancroft, Huntsville, Peterborough, Uxbridge and Barrie. All Kawartha Dairy stores offer a full line of dairy products along with the company’s legendary premium ice cream. With 47 flavours to choose from, visitors to the stores will no doubt agree their most difficult decision is deciding between all the choices available. The stores also carry a selection of frozen yogurt, sherbet and sugar free offerings, alongside ice cream flavours like Moose Tracks, Birthday Cake, Death By Chocolate, Banana Boat, Bear Claw and many other traditional favourites. The success of the company’s retail stores has spurred demand for the ice cream throughout Ontario, as Kawartha Dairy fans now crave that rich and creamy taste twelve months a year. Nowadays, their ice cream can be found at local shops in many communities and major centers throughout Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario. “In recent years, the demand for our ice cream has been overwhelming. Every week we have calls from retailers and scoop stands wanting to carry it because they have heard from their customers about Kawartha Dairy ice cream.” comments General Manager Blake Frazer. “We now have outlets selling our ice cream from Ottawa to Windsor.” Even with the increased availability of Kawartha Dairy ice cream throughout Ontario, the company’s heart and soul continues to be tied to cottage country. The Kawartha Dairy team is looking forward to seeing you at one of their stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support. Kawartha Dairy. Proudly family owned since 1937.

A local and tourist favourite for many years, Just for the Halibut provides mouth-watering fish and chips of finest quality sold at market value. The portions are large and delicious. Fish is cooked in a light batter and are complemented by your choice of French fries, onion rings, coleslaw or salad. It usually is a very busy spot. Growing Green Spaces and Beautiful Places

Made up of green thumbs, gardeners, treehuggers, planters and nature lovers, those who join the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society (BDHS) help each other plan and establish their own personal gardens, beautify the community and help to promote protection of the environment. Established in 1922, the BDHS is one of the oldest organizations existing in Bobcaygeon that originated over sharing gardening tips and resources. Over the years, the Bobcaygeon & District Society has become increasingly involved in community gardening and public education initiatives. You will enjoy approximately 30 public gardens and displays throughout the year in the village. These are all created, planted and maintained by volunteers. A “Children’s Pioneer Garden” program, is a new joint venture between the BDHS, Kawartha Settlers’ Village, Bobcaygeon Public School and the local Food Bank. Each year Grade 3 students learn how to revitalize soil, plant seeds and maintain a pioneer garden until the end of June. Once 42 Explore Bobcaygeon 2013

harvested, volunteers from the society will donate the crops to the local food bank. Fundraising initiatives for the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society include plant sales, a summer tea, workshops, and a garden tour, that help to maintain Bobcaygeon beautification projects. Please Enjoy Our Town and Be a Good Neighbour Our local charitable organizations are in the business of giving to those in our communities who need help. Human needs vary for everyone, from individuals to families, and day to day, from situation to situation. When others give, it’s a better place to visit and live! Here’s a few ways that you can be a good neighbour: • If you see suspicious behaviour, report it • Donate cash or clothing to those in need • Provide food hampers, vouchers or toys • Offer friendship and support • Share referrals and resources • Volunteer at parent, child and family programs • Support summer camps for kids and teens Our community extends our appreciation. Both locals and visitors can help us to serve our community by being a good neighbour. We ask for your help so that we can help each other!

Accomodations

Cottagers who visit for the summer season often become part of a community group in one of many small hamlets tucked along the shores that make up the rural neighbourhoods of the Kawartha Lakes and countryside. Arenas, Community Centers & Community Halls are gathering places for groups and individuals who live, work and play in this area. We see families, farmers, fisherman, trades people and professionals, as just a few of the mix that make up the mosaic of the northern visitors and residents. Individuals often return to the area as retirees and their families will often follow to enjoy the experience of small communities that make it feel so much like home here. Many community groups will support and cater rentals for special events with your family and friends as you welcome them to your northern retreat. Community venues are available for rental at reasonable costs and help to put funds back into the community! The communities in and around Bobcaygeon are yours to explore! Kawarthas B&B Green Escape by Dawn Carolee

Several years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Sagar Constantin, creator and author of the bestselling book, Neo Feng Shui. Intrigued by her depth of decorating knowledge, I asked her to help me choose a colour of paint for the walls of my home that would lend peace to my private sanctuary. I work from home. She suggested I use green for the walls directly in front of my desk. Green. I love the colour. It has depth and warmth, like a forest at dusk. The shade brings calm to my soul and clears any clutter that may get in the way of my train of thoughts.

Since then, I’ve learned that green is also known as a healing colour. There are few places in the city, where I can enjoy the lush green grass and foliage on any given day. Like many of the artists who live, work and play in this area, I take pleasure in the many hues of green that are displayed in our natural surroundings when I enjoy the luxury of working from my laptop. I moved to the Kawartha Lakes six years ago and I live by the river surrounded by towering trees, rustling leaves and thick evergreens that block views from my neighbours. Friends visit often. My “happy place” reminds me of my northern roots in Thunder Bay. Here too, the air is rich with oxygen and each breath of fresh, sweet life comes from the plants that thrive. Greenery provides not only shade, but serenity too, by the river. Green opens my mind to all kinds of creative possibilities.

I do my best work here. Little wonder. Whether you come here to work or to relax, take in the pleasure of a new sunrise each day, and let nature speak through the greenery, the river and the wind. A leading British mental charity, Mind, has shown that eco-therapy promotes mental health as a result of spending time in the green, great outdoors. My green paradise is nestled by the river, right between “Buck” and “Bob” (Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon.) I extend my welcome throughout all four seasons. By the River is available for individuals, couples and small groups for themed day trips, weekend getaways and guided retreats. It’s located in the beautiful Kawartha Lakes region between Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon, just 2 hours N/E of Toronto, ON. Call 705.341.8426 or make your reservation online at www.dawnbytheriver.ca.

PORT 32 BOBCAYGEON. Where you can leave your city life behind without leaving all of it behind.

Arguably, the world’s greatest shoe store. Where there are shoes, there’s hope.

Walk to shopping and lattes.

How civilized. A short walk, or a shorter bike ride from your luxury bungalow in Port 32, and you can get your vanilla latte, stop at the market, pick up some flowers and a bottle of wine. Some bread from the bakery. Meet a friend for lunch. No rush, no hurry, no hassle. In Bobcaygeon you’ll be living among happy people. Who wouldn’t be happy? It’s nice here.

There’s only one. 1-888-528-5555 port32.com
