As you meander along its cool, shimmering waterway to its bustling shore, or drive— leaving forest and field behind—to its vibrant and historic downtown core, imagine Bobcaygeon 150 years ago. While in Charlottetown, PEI, a critical gathering of representatives from the British colonies of Canada (formerly Upper and Lower Canada), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were negotiating the birth of our nation, a small settlement of approximately 800 Irish, Scottish and English immigrants, was establishing an identity on lumber, limestone, grain and lead. Nestled on a woodsy island between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes, this community grew and nine years after Confederation— in 1876—Bobcaygeon was incorporated as a village. A spirited, arts-oriented community, proud of its setting, history and modernity, “Caygeon” as it is often affectionately known, is now a village of over 3,500. And in this very special year, we invite you to join in celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday along its picturesque shore, amid its friendly residents: “Happy Birthday Canada, from Bobcaygeon.” To ensure you’re up-to-date on the latest Canada 150 celebrations, pick up the latest issue of The Promoter or visit www.thepromoter.ca.

Our Fresh Water Bounty Bobcaygeon’s name derives from the Algonquin word bobcaygewanunk, meaning “shallow rapids.” This village is all about water.

Built on three islands in the robust Bobcaygeon River, with the Big Bob Channel and Trent Severn Waterway to the north, and the Little Bob Channel to the south, water is never far from one’s mind and heart in Bobcaygeon. To the west of the village the river flows into 25 km-long Sturgeon Lake, giving you access to Sturgeon Point, Lindsay and Fenelon Falls. To the east is the north end of Pigeon Lake, where you’ll find the area’s largest island, the newly protected Chiminis (Big or Boyd Island). It won’t surprise you then, that the Bobcaygeon area is popular with anglers, boaters, paddlers, and beach lovers—with something for all ages and interests. A Birthday Gift for You.: The Trent Severn Waterway is a Parks Canada national historic site. To celebrate Canada 150, the canal will be offering free lockage throughout the 2017 season.

Trent Severn Waterway

Significant to the founding of Bobcaygeon, is the Trent-Severn Waterway. It was here, in 1832, that the government of Upper Canada built the first lock in what would become a 386-kilometer-long, 44-lock canal from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron. It was around this lock – Lock 32 – and the nearby grist and sawmills built by founder Thomas Need, that our village took root. Internationally recognized as one of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world, the Trent-Severn Waterway, is explored by over 1 million people each year. Along the length of the historic site, visitors can tour two of the world’s highest hydraulic lift locks. Lock 21, in Peterborough—recognized as one of the largest unreinforced concrete structures in the world—is the tallest, lifting boats 65 feet. Lock 36, in Kirkfield, is located at the highest section of the Trent-Severn Waterway at 256 meters above sea level. The canal boasts a marine railway at Lock 44 in Big Chute, and; the highest fresh water elevation point from which you can circumnavigate the globe without stepping on land (Coboconk, Lock 35).

Marine Services

It’s hard to beat the feeling you get when boating on a sparkling Kawartha lake; the blue skies, the warm breeze, the sweet fragrance of summer. That’s why visitors flock to this region: to experience our firstclass boating and angling, and of course, the numerous expert businesses that support these water adventures. Seventy years ago, it would have been hard to imagine that a small, local baitand-tackle shop would blossom into the international award-winning enterprise it is today: Buckeye Marine. South of town, on County Road 36, this familyowned and operated business, offers an extensive menu of products and services to meet your boating needs, including: boat sales, storage, rental and repair; custom upholstery services, and; marine accessory sales. They also host a number of courses and events. Buckeye Marine’s company logo, “We Care,” goes beyond business. Buckeye Marine is a committed community member, participating in numerous local philanthropic and environmental stewardship efforts. Birch Point Marina—located on the south shore of Sturgeon Lake, just west of Bobcaygeon – is another cornerstone in the local boating community. Fifty years young,

this trusted business sells cruisers and snowmobiles (new and new-to-you) and marine supplies, in addition to offering a gas dock, storage and supplies for local and visiting boaters.

Highlights & Heritage Sites Bobcaygeon is a happening place. For a village of its size, it’s mighty big with local events and heritage activities. As the saying goes, “there’s something for everyone,” so after a day spent on the water, on the land, or exploring our downtown, join us for a little local culture.

Featured Events

Globus Theatre at the LAB (Various Dates) The Lakeview Arts Barn (LAB) is a special entertainment venue set in a former working barn south of Bobcaygeon. Originally modified in 1967, LAB enjoyed a 30-year stint as a dance hall, before further renovation in 2006 transformed it to the home to the Globus Theatre. Lots of comedy with a dash of song describes the 2017 lineup. • Real Estate – A Great Canadian Comedy by Allana Harkin, June 28 – July 8 • Oh Canada, We Sing for Thee starring Leisa Way, July 11 – 22

• Raising the Barn – A Dinner Theatre Experience, July 26 – Aug 5 • The Fixer Upper by Lorne Elliot, Aug 8 – 19 • Half Way There by Norm Foster, Aug 23 – Sept 2 May 26, 27, 28 • Canada/US Walleye Tournament Walleye, a cool-water fish, is a favourite amongst anglers. Bobcaygeon is host to the province’s oldest walleye live-release competition. Thirty-seven years strong, this tournament hosts teams from north and south of the border for the $10,000 prize. Sign up at canadauswalleye. com or come out for our Share Tackle Swap on Saturday night. Not an angler? Join us at 6:30 am at the CKL Road 24 bridge over Little Bob Channel to send 140 boats off into a beautiful Sturgeon Lake morning. June 10 • Unlock Summer Join us for the Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual welcome-back-summer event. Our first big celebration of the season, this much awaited family festivity features music, performers, demonstrations, a barbecue and most important, the “unlocking” of a giant gold lock, launching us all into the season of fun. See, bobcaygeon. org for details.

July 1 • 150th Canada Day Celebrations Happy Birthday, Canada. In 1867, Bobcaygeon was an unincorporated settlement amid the forest and farmland of North America. What could the celebrations have been like, a century and a half ago, when the British colonies of Upper Canada, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Lower Canada

united to form the Dominion of Canada? Today, residents and visitors to Bobcaygeon have the local Canada Day Committee to thank for what will be our biggest shindig yet. Together since 1985, the committee has had plenty of practice getting ready for our special 150th all-day birthday bash. Starting at 10 am in Tommy Anderson Park, there’ll be plenty of activities for the family, including face-painting, a fishing pond, hot dogs, balloons and prizes. Later head out to the annual Canada Day Parade, which will promenade through the downtown, beginning at 2:30. In the late afternoon, at the Bobcaygeon Community Centre, there’ll be a ceremonial cake cutting (you can’t have a birthday without cake.) and ice cream, along with entertainment, displays, bouncy castles, and balloon animals. And in the evening there’s a musical performance, followed by, you got it: FIREWORKS. So put on your red shirt and maple-leaf hat and join us in the festivities. Check canadadaybobcaygeon.com close July 1 to make sure you have up-to-date times and events. July 28-29 • Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest You don’t have to be a step dancer or a fiddle player to enjoy this old-timey fun. Let the tunes lure you in—for a few hours to a full day—to watch competitors from across the province vie for cash and a top spot in Ontario-traditionalmusic and dance. Held at the Bobcaygeon Community Centre on Mansfield St., visit fiddlecontest.ca for more details. August 5 • Midnight Madness No cars allowed. Downtown Bobcaygeon’s Bolton Street is fully owned by pedestrians during this fun-filled shopping extravaganza. Starting at 7 pm, and lasting until midnight, this event is chock full of bargains,

entertainment, children’s activities and delicious food samples. Find out more at bobcaygeonmidnightmadness.ca August 18—20 • Buckhorn Fine Art Festival Visited by art lovers far and wide, this annual event, held at the Buckhorn Community Centre, is very special indeed. Known for both its celebration and demonstration of all things art, this event features: “acres of art”, opportunities to speak with and learn from the artists directly, workshops, presentations, and a family ARTivity zone. A beautiful setting, musical guests and fine food rounds off this internationally-recognized show. Sept 2—3 • Kawartha Arts Festival Professional, hobby and armchair artists flock to the Fenelon Falls Fairground every Labour Day Weekend for the muchanticipated Kawartha Arts Festival. It started as a small gathering of local artists, eager to display their work. Twenty-eight years later, it draws thousands of visitors to see fine art and craft creations of over a 100 artists in a multitude of media: oil, watercolour, acrylic, clay, metal, stone, wood, glass, leather and more—like the vivid, ethereal landscapes of contemporary Canadian artist James Goodliff (page 16). Admission and parking are free. Visit kawarthaartsfestival.com. DON’T MISS th

Sept 28 – 30 • Bobcaygeon Fall Fair At 159, the Bobcaygeon Fall Fair is nine years older than our country. Originally an event co-ordinated by the Verulam Agricultural Society to help promote Upper Canada (now southern Ontario) as an agricultural centre, the fair showcased the best of regional livestock, produce, baking and sewing. Now one of the oldest fall fairs in the province, the “Daddy of ‘em all” continues the fall fun and has added a parade, horse show, tractor pull, demolition derby, live music, and of course, a modern-fair must: a midway. bobcaygeonfair.com

The Kawartha Lakes region has a rich past. Many millennia before Canada’s 1867 Confederation, Indigenous peoples inhabited this verdant land. When Samuel de Champlain visited in 1615, it is estimated that close to 70 Huron villages were dispersed about the Bobcaygeon area. Later, the Iroquois Confederacy seized the region, then the Mississauga Anishinaabe. Eventually, in 1815, debilitated by disease and war, remaining Indigenous inhabitants in much of Upper Canada made treaties with the colonial government under questionable circumstances. Their descendants now live in the nearby Curve Lake, Scugog, Rama, Georgina Island, Hiawatha and Alderville communities—and the Treaties are the subject of ongoing legal dispute. In the 1830s, Europeans arrived, bringing their evolving cultures, social systems, and political structures. They established homesteads and settlements across the landscape, and while some grew rich, others eked out a living on logging and farming. A glimpse into their lives can be found at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. This living museum features a unique collection of over 20 buildings—as well as artifacts and information—dating between 1830 and 1935. In 1832, modestly wealthy Englishman, Thomas Need—24 at the time—saw great potential in the islands upon which Bobcaygeon now sits. He purchased the land,

set up a sawmill, gristmill and general store, and became heavily involved in local government and the building of Lock 32 and the Trent-Severn Waterway. His book, Six Years in the Bush, details this experience. It sits respectably amongst those by Catherine Parr Traill and Samuel Strickland as testaments to early settler life in Ontario. When he returned to England in 1844, Thomas Need sold his lumber company to Mossom Boyd. It flourished under his direction establishing the Boyds as one of the key founding families of Bobcaygeon. The Boyd Heritage Museum highlights the many successes and tragedies of this entrepreneurial clan and their spirited patriarch, the “lumber king of the Trent Valley.” Kawartha Settlers’ Village and the Boyd Heritage Museum are still central to Bobcaygeon’s cultural life. Both host a diversity of events throughout the year. Look for these in the events calendar on page 16. You can connect to more of our story and history by visiting other small museums, historical sites and plaques located within easy driving distance of Bobcaygeon.

Outdoor Exploration “It was in Bobcaygeon, I saw the constellations,” sang Gord Downie of the iconic Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip. Yes, the constellations and many other great outdoor wonders and activities are yours to experience in the beautiful Kawarthas.

Signature Activities

Maple Madness After a long, cold winter, who doesn’t await those first sweet hints of the coming spring? The warmer days and the melting snow mean it’s maple syrup time. And time to visit a sugarbush. In March, the McLean Berry Farm in Buckhorn wakens from hibernation with gusto. Take a wagon ride through their tapped maple forest, listen to joyous live music, make maple taffy in the snow, and most importantly, dive into a plate of pancakes slathered with hot syrup. If you can’t get to a sugarbush, you can still find evidence of the region’s sugary harvest at the Bobcaygeon Farmers’ Market, Saturdays 8 am to 1 pm, May to October, at the Fairgrounds. Hiking Day hiking in the Kawarthas—whether it be a short scenic walk through a local village or at a tourist site, or a day spent meandering dirt trails deep in the woods—is an activity for all ages and abilities. Visit the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Hiking and Nature Trails webpage (city.kawartha.on.ca) for a detailed listing of local and regional hiking spots, including information on those accessible to wheelchairs and walkers. If you are in for the long haul, stick to the trail, and don’t forget to bring a snack, water, sunscreen, hat, a cell phone, and weather-appropriate layers. Golfing With its rolling hills, winding waterways, and breathtaking vistas, golfing in the Kawarthas is a truly enjoyable experience. Eganridge Golf and Country Club, set high on a ridge overlooking Sturgeon Lake, is a beautiful par35, nine-hole, 3,003-yard course set among pristine forest and wetland west of Bobcaygeon. This pay-as-you-play course provides a range of rates depending on time, day and your golfing desires. Pretty Sheffield Greens is a 2,765 yard, par-34, 9-hole public golf course situated just north

of Bobcaygeon on Pigeon Lake. Start at its charming, rustic barn—the club house and pro shop—before heading out to enjoy this forested and easy-to-walk course (carts also available). Osprey Watching With our abundance of lakes and rivers, it’s not surprising that many ospreys make the Kawarthas home. After all, their favourite food is fish. Keep your eyes to the skies (unless you’re driving) and you’ll find them soaring through the air on wings spanning up to two metres, or building their massive nests atop platforms specially built to replace the loss of their preferred tall-tree habitat. Visit local friendsoftheosprey.org for more information or to report a nest in a dangerous location. Cycling Our multi-use trails and quiet country roads are a strong draw for those of the cycling persuasion. The scenery and quaint villages don’t hurt either. In the Kawarthas you’ll find routes to meet many needs—racer, mountain biker, cycling family, Sunday pedaller. Try the Victoria Rail Trail or the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail to start, or visit explorekawarthas.com to download a map 42 Explore Bobcaygeon 2017

Off-Roading Due to its numerous, all-season trails and wilderness setting, the Kawarthas is a powersport enthusiast’s paradise. Visit the Kawartha ATV Association (katva.ca) and the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club (klsc.ca) for information on trails and trail conditions, guides, and permits. Fall Colours Sure, summer in the Kawarthas is great, but have you been here in the fall? The deep, dark shimmering lakes, rolling hills, and of course, the fiery colours of our deciduous forests make autumn here a favourite season for many. Start out on a crisp morning—by foot, car or bike—to enjoy the fragrant vibrancy of this fine season. Finish your adventure at the Bobcaygeon Farmers Market or at one of our great local restaurants. Winter Sports Winter has a charm all its own in the Kawarthas. Once the season hits, there is no end to the winter activities this region has to offer: skating, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Dress well, carry a thermos of hot chocolate and enjoy. You’re sure to come home rosycheeked and smiling. Check local tourism or recreation websites for more winter sport information. See Our Fresh Water Bounty (page 6) for information on swimming, fishing and boating in the Kawarthas.

Special Places

Local Parks Whether you are staying downtown, spending the day window shopping, or passing through by boat, you may want a place to relax, have a picnic, or toss a Frisbee. In addition to our local options Beach Park, Riverview Park and Tommy Anderson Park (splash pad) detailed in the Swimming section of Our Fresh Water Bounty (page 10), there is Wilderness Park, Bobcaygeon’s newest addition (and best kept secret) to its parkland bounty. This eight-acre forested park, located northeast of the village, was founded by Environmental Action Bobcaygeon, a deeply dedicated group of volunteers who have been instrumental in the creation, management and maintenance of this beautiful space. Accessible to wheelchairs and walkers, the trails are also open to cyclists and cross-country skiers. Wilderness Park Road is the first right off CKL Road 36, after the CKL Road 49 intersection. Victoria Rail Trail The Victoria Rail Trail runs 85 kms from Bethany to Kinmount, with additional access in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, and Burnt River. This scenic, former rail corridor is open year round to recreational uses, including: walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling/ATVing (with permit). The diverse landscape—from marshlands to deep forests—is perfect for bird and wildlife watchers. Visit the City of Kawartha Lakes Parks and Trails webpage (city.kawartha. on.ca) for more information.

Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Canada’s granddaddy of the trails, the Trans Canada Trail, can be accessed a 30-minute drive south of Bobcaygeon in Omemee. If you can, head east on the trail approximately 10 kms to the Doubé Trestle Bridge (it’s close to Orange Corners), a gorgeous old rail bridge that spans 200 metres across and 29 metres above the picturesque Buttermilk Valley. It’s a sight to behold. Gamiing Nature Centre Pronouced “gaa-minj” (an Ojibway word for “at the shore”), the Gamiing Nature Centre on Pigeon Lake, south of Bobcaygeon, is a not-for-profit environmental education facility that engages children and adults in wetland, shoreline and waterway stewardship activities. Explore their native nursery, trails, and forests, or come out for a special event, tree planting or workshop (gamiing.org). And bring your GPS. There are a number of geocaches hidden on the property (geocaching.com). Emily Provincial Park and Emily Tract A half hour south of Bobcaygeon on the Pigeon River, you’ll find Emily Provincial Park (CKL Rd 10, south of Peace Rd) and Emily Tract. Emily Provincial Park features a short hiking trail, sandy beaches, camping and natural heritage education. To the west of Emily Provincial Park, on Peace Road (on the south side, just past Centreline Rd), you’ll find the Emily Tract, home to two gently rolling 2 km hiking loops in 205 acres of leafy mixed forest. Neighbouring Communities

Burnt River. (Est. 1830s) With a population of 250 and no commercial district, Burnt River may not be on your radar as a destination. However, if you have a canoe, bike, snowmobile, fishing rod, or ATV, you may not want to miss it. From this tiny hamlet with its unique history you can access the Burnt River (a popular canoe route), the Victoria Rail Trail (85 kms of flat, scenic trail that runs between Lindsay and Kinmount) and Four Mile Lake (with its public beach and boat launch off of Hillside Dr.) Cameron. (Believed site of 1613 battle fought between First Nations and Samuel de Champlain.) This quiet country village is located to the west of Sturgeon Lake, on Hwy 35 at CKL Rd 34, nestled amidst rolling green fields. Watch for roadside stands where farmers offer naturally-raised beef, produce and home-baked goods. Cameron is best known for its recreational fishing, accessed through the hamlet of Long Beach on Sturgeon Lake. Coboconk. (Est. 1851) Though small—with a population of 800—Coboconk has long been a centre of commerce and bustle. In the 1800s and early 1900s it was active in the lumber, limestone and brick-making industries of central Ontario; while later, with the building of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it became a hub for summer tourist and cottager activity. Known to the cognoscenti as “Coby”, it hosts the annual Fresh Water Summit and the Coboconk Duck Derby. In town, you’ll find “Canada’s smallest jail” while a short drive southwest will take you to Balsam Lake Provincial Park. 44 Explore Bobcaygeon 2017

Fenelon Falls. (Inc. 1874) As you cruise along the Trent-Severn Waterway north west of Bobcaygeon you’ll eventually come to Lock 34. Welcome to the bustling village of Fenelon Falls. With a roaring waterfall at the heart of the community, the village has lots to offer its many admirers. Whether its outdoor recreation, a bit of shopping, a cultural event, or a dash of history, the “Jewel of the Kawarthas”, has it. To learn more, pick up a copy of Explore Fenelon Falls 2017 at the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Office at the locks. Kinmount. (Est ~1850s) The landscape is different in Kinmount. The deep, dark woods and looming, rocky hills of the Canadian Shield surround this tiny village. First home to the Huron, settlers from the United Kingdom arrived in the 1850s, followed later in 1874, by a large group of Icelandic railway workers. This group, identified as one of the first Icelandic settlements in Canada, met ill fortune due to poor health standards in their work camp. Today, this small tourist village with its rich history is eclectic in spirit and interest. After touring its beautiful sawmill, railway station and artisan shops, visit the Highland Cinema to discover a mesmerizing labyrinth of Hollywood paraphernalia. Looking for solitude? Visit the Dharma Centre, 400-acre mediation retreat in the hills southeast of town. Kirkfield. (Est. 1864) Tiny Kirkfield has two big attractions. For history buffs and boaters, there’s the Kirkfield Lift Lock. Situated at Lock 36 of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it’s the second highest hydraulic lift lock in the

world (lifting boats 15 m) and is designated as being at the highest elevation on the water route. For birders and nature buffs, there’s Carden Alvar Provincial Park. One of province’s newest parks, it has been identified as a globally rare ecosystem. Public access is limited to two secured hiking trails due to its extremely sensitive habitat. Parking and washrooms are available at the trailhead. Lindsay. (Inc. 1859) Lindsay, one of the larger commercial centres in the Kawarthas, features a historic downtown, a mall and large retail outlets. The town was first settled by an American family, the Purdys, who built a dam on the Scugog River in 1827, followed by a sawmill and gristmill around which the community grew. At first, Lindsay – named after the surveyor’s assistant who died accidentally while plotting its streets and lots—was a lumber and farming hub. After the introduction of the railway, it became a manufacturing centre for over a hundred years. Today, its economic focus is agriculture and tourism. Spend a day exploring Lindsay’s downtown boutiques, strolling the walking trails that follow the Scugog River, and step back in time at the Olde Gaol Museum.

Norland. (Est. 1862) As you drive towards Norland, you can’t help but notice a change in the landscape; from rolling hills, farms and woods, to the dark coniferous forests and steep granite outcrops of the Canadian Shield. You’ve entered “The Land Between”; a unique transitional area containing features of the two ecosystems it borders. Norland is situated on the pristine Gull River and offers boating, canoeing and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Its public access beach can be found at #74 Shadow Lake Rd 3, off Hwy 35, south of the village. Rosedale. (Est. ~1873) South of Coboconk, Rosedale’s Lock 35 is popular stop for TrentSevern boaters and bird watchers. As of 2016, you can try “glamping” at one of Parks Canada o-TENTik sites available there. Call 1-877-737-3783 for details. Sturgeon Point. (Inc. 1899) A short drive west of Bobcaygeon, scenic Sturgeon Point has been a beloved summer vacation destination for over 150 years. Steeped in history, this tiny hamlet features excellent swimming at its public beach, basketball at its wooded park, and great fishing at the government wharf. The 100-year-old, octagonal Sturgeon Point Union Church is a must-see. Explore Bobcaygeon 2017 45
