About Bobcaygeon

Founded in 1833, Bobcaygeon was incorporated as a village in 1876. Taken from the Algonquin language, the name Bobcaygeon means “shallow rapids.” Located just 2 hours northeast of Toronto, this unique town rests on three islands set in the narrow strip between two lakes, and is joined by seven bridges. Water is a key element to many of the recreational opportunities in Bobcaygeon. Lock 32 on the Trent-Severn Waterway is the main water thoroughfare.

There’s more to Bobcaygeon than just water, though. Stroll through the downtown core, visiting worldclass shops and restaurants; hop on a bicycle and tour around thanks to the town’s Bike Share program; take a walk through history at one of the area’s many museums; or discover the beauty of art at any of the galleries and artist’s studios. Those who have come to the area keep coming back, making memories to last a lifetime. It’s the relaxed atmosphere combined with activities for the whole family all year round. Put Bobcaygeon on your visit list this year and you won’t be disappointed!

Diving

With so much history above the water, there’s more to discover below it. Diving and snorkelling can give you a new appreciation for what’s underwater. Basic snorkelling doesn’t require much equipment and can be done safely in shallow water with adult supervision. For those looking for a more intense experience of a full dive, there are experts in neighbouring communities who can give you the training, certification and rental equipment for your adventure. Ask at the Chamber of Commerce or Visitors’ Centre for more information.

Fishing

Fishing is a great way to relieve stress … floating out on a beautiful

lake or river on a beautiful summer day or waiting for the first bite during ice fishing season. Our area is known as an angler’s paradise, not only for the many species of fish to be caught, but also the opportunity to fish with others in tournaments throughout the Kawarthas. We have a unique blend of cool- and warm-water lakes that are home to pan fish, large- and small-mouth bass, pike, perch, muskie and pickerel. Whether it’s an anglers’ weekend at the cottage, family outings or a tournament, you’ll find whatever you want in our beautiful lakes and rivers. The 38th Annual Canada/US Walleye 10 Explore Bobcaygeon 2018

Fishing Tournament on Sturgeon Lake is one that draws hundreds of anglers and their families to the area. In 2018, the event takes place May 25, 26 and 27. There’s not only the fishing trophy to be won, but there’s also a trade show for anglers looking for the latest gadgets and, of course, boats! Check out www.canadauswalleye.com for more information. Take advantage of Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Events – February 17 to 19, 2018 and June 30 to July 8, 2018 – when you don’t need a license. All other times, you need to have a license to fish and there are restrictions throughout the year. Visit www.ontariofamilyfishing. com for more information. There’s also a number of fishing charters with experts who will take you out on the water and teach you some tricks of the trade!

Houseboat Vacations

Bobcaygeon is considered the houseboat capital of Ontario and it’s no wonder with access to the entire Trent-Severn Waterway at our doorstep. Given the beauty and history of our region, experiencing the area from the water is a great way to leave your worries behind. Bring the entire family for a vacation, spend it with friends or make a romantic week-long getaway from the everyday. On a houseboat, you have the freedom of choosing where you stay every night – at a dock, in the middle of the lake or sheltered in a bay. You can join other houseboaters in a cluster and enjoy meeting new friends. The houseboating experience is part travel, part leisure and part adventure because the lake and

towns along the way look different from every angle. You can be the captain of your own adventure on a houseboat anywhere in Bobcaygeon and area. Before you hop on board, though, you need to read and understand the rules of the “road.” You have to know the marking system along the way and always be courteous of others on the water. It also might be a good idea to take the houseboat out for a test drive a few weeks before you take your whole vacation. This “hands-on” experience will prepare you for your cruise and give you more confidence behind the wheel. As houseboating has become more popular with a lot of tourists, it’s a good idea to book your vessel early. Then review your itinerary and start planning for your vacation of a lifetime!

Outdoor Activities

Winter or summer, spring or fall, experiencing the great outdoors has never felt so good.

Go for a hike along one of the many trails, take your bike through small towns and on one of the Kawartha Lakes Cycling Routes, bring out the ATV for a weekend of fun on the backroads or spend the day on your snowmobile on one of the impeccably groomed trails in the area. There’s something outdoors for everyone!

HIKING

There are more than 600km of trails spread across our area. Many have access points in different areas and trails are for different skill levels. Bobcaygeon Wilderness Park has over 8 acres of safe, accessible trails for walking and hiking. There’s also an educational component as interpretive signs explain the significance of the natural features of the park. There’s also a large pollinator patch that showcases hundreds of native plants and highlights the importance that pollinators, especially bees, play in our ecosystems. The Park is located in the northeast corner of Bobcaygeon, just off County Road 36. 12 Explore Bobcaygeon 2018

For those who want a more leisurely trail, the John Eakins Walkway is located along the Trent-Severn Waterway at Lock 32. The walkway is dedicated to former local politician, John Eakins. You can access the trail near the Lock. More than 7km of trails and 15 hectares of wetland await the adventurer at Gamiing Nature Centre. Located just outside Bobcaygeon on County Road 17, this beautiful property is a must for nature lovers. Balsam Lake Provincial Park, located outside Kirkfield, has two hiking trails. The Lookout Trail is a 2.6km walk through eskers and kames formed over 10,000 years ago from the Wisconsin Glacier, while the Plantation Trail is a 4.2 km moderate forest trek with both natural and pioneer highlights. Check out kawarthalakes.ca for more trails.

GOLF

Whether you’re an occasional golfer, a beginner, or a true pro, Bobcaygeon and area offers some of the best golfing in the Kawarthas. Even on the course, you’re a long way from the stress of the city. Many of our courses are associated with lakeside cottages and resorts and can tempt

you with stay-and-play packages. They also cater to all skill levels and some have summer leagues where you can join other like-minded duffers on the links and at the 19th hole!

LOOK UP

Mother Nature’s light show – our nighttime sky – should not be missed. Out here, away from city lights and light pollution, you feel like you can reach up and touch the stars. Grab a lawn chair or blanket and discover a whole new world.

BIKE SHARE

In the summer of 2017, Impact 32, a group of local business owners and community organizers installed a Bike Sharing Program in Bobcaygeon. With 10 new 7-speed cruisers, it offers visitors and residents a new option for getting around town. The bikes are available every day at the Bike Share Station at Lock 32 from May through October. And it’s easy. Just download the “MOVATIC” app on your phone, find the bikes, sign a waiver, pay through your phone and your phone will then unlock the bike. Once you’re done, the phone will lock the bike back into the station and calculate your payment. A minimal charge will help to cover annual expenses associated with a system such as this. Check out www.visitbobcaygeon.com/bike-sharing/ for more information.

This annual event displays the old-time skills of fiddling and step dancing. These were important to our ancestors at weddings, dances, barn raisings and even at the lumber camps as a form of recreation and entertainment. The first was held in October 1970, as part of the annual Fall Fair. Today, the Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest is a non-profit communityrun project. This chartered volunteer-run group conducts this event annually to preserve this pioneer cultural art form and to raise money for worthy charities.

SEPTEMBER 27/28/29 Bobcaygeon Fall Fair

The “Daddy of ‘Em All”, the annual Bobcaygeon Fall Fair was one of the first fall fairs in Ontario history. There are always competitions – like who can make the best pie – and, of course, the popular demolition derby. We celebrate with activities for the whole family, homemade products, a Midways and so much more. Visit bobcaygeonfair.org for more information.

Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge

The Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge was originally constructed in 1921, and remains an important part of the landscape of the community, enabling the mix of both boat and vehicular traffic in the downtown core. The Swing Bridge is the oldest along the Trent Severn Waterway and allows for taller vessels to navigate through the system.

Kinmount Railway Station

The most enduring symbol of Kinmount’s railway history is the railway station. It stands in the core of the village, like an umbrella pole with the rest of the village under its awning. The Railway Station is an original: built in 1876 by Sir William Mackenzie from Kirkfield. Situated on the banks of the Burnt River, the Kinmount Railway Station is currently home to the Tourist Information Centre, Model Railway & Museum and the Kinmount Icelandic Monument. Visit kinmount.ca for information.

Kawartha Settlers’ Village

What was once a thriving family farm, Kawartha Settlers’ Village is now home to a fascinating collection of over 20 historic homes and buildings. Experience what life was like for pioneers in the Kawarthas as you stroll leisurely through the Village and discover artifacts from 1830 to 1935. Visit settlersvillage.org for more information.

The Boyd Heritage Museum on Canal Street tells the story of one of the major founding members of the Bobcaygeon area, Mossom Boyd. Personal glimpses of the struggles, tragedies, and successes of the Boyd family are on display at the Museum. The Curve Lake Cultural Centre offers up a picture of the lives and history of the area’s Indigenous Peoples. Created in 1988 and located on the First Nations Reserve of Curve Lake, just south of Buckhorn, the Centre is a source of knowledge that is dedicated to keeping traditions and ceremonies alive. The Cultural Centre is a place to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the First Nations people.

The area’s history is also on display through remarkable photographs and artifacts.

Kawartha Dairy

Over 80 Years of Tradition & Quality

A cottage country destination for generations of vacationers and cottage goers, those that have experienced a visit to Kawartha Dairy would certainly agree that summer just isn’t complete without a few Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones. Along with the Bobcaygeon outlet, other Kawartha Dairy stores are located in Minden, Lindsay, Bancroft, Huntsville, Peterborough, Uxbridge, Barrie and Orillia. All Kawartha Dairy stores offer a full line of dairy products along with the company’s legendary premium ice cream. With over 40 flavours to choose from, visitors to the stores will no doubt agree their most difficult decision is deciding between all the choices available. While many people are familiar with the most popular flavours, like Moose Tracks, Pralines and Cream, Salty Caramel Truffle or Death by Chocolate, a visit to one of our stores is a fantastic opportunity to try one of our other flavours that are bit harder to come by. Whatever you choose, you won’t leave disappointed! The success of the company’s retail stores has spurred demand for the ice cream throughout Ontario, as Kawartha Dairy fans now crave that rich and creamy taste twelve months a year. “In recent years, the demand for our ice cream has continued to grow. Every week we have calls from retailers and scoop stands wanting to carry it because they have heard from their customers about Kawartha Dairy ice cream” comments General Manager Blake Frazer. Even with the increased availability of Kawartha Dairy ice cream throughout Ontario, the company’s heart and soul continues to be tied to cottage country. The Kawartha Dairy team is looking forward to seeing you at one of their stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support. Kawartha Dairy. Proudly family owned since 1937.

Burnt River. (Est. 1830s) With a population of 250 and no commercial district, Burnt River may not be on your radar as a destination. However, if you have a canoe, bike, snowmobile, fishing rod, or ATV, you may not want to miss it. From this tiny hamlet with its unique history you can access the Burnt River (a popular canoe route), the Victoria Rail Trail (85 kms of flat, scenic trail that runs between Lindsay and Kinmount) and Four Mile Lake (with its public beach and boat launch off of Hillside Dr.) Cameron. (Believed site of 1613 battle fought between First Nations and Samuel de Champlain.) This quiet country village is located to the west of Sturgeon Lake, on Hwy 35 at CKL Rd 34, nestled amidst rolling green fields. Watch for roadside stands where farmers offer naturally-raised beef, produce and home-baked goods. Cameron is best known for its recreational fishing, accessed through the hamlet of Long Beach on Sturgeon Lake. 44 Explore Bobcaygeon 2018

Coboconk. (Est. 1851) Though small—with a population of 800—Coboconk has long been a centre of commerce and bustle. In the 1800s and early 1900s it was active in the lumber, limestone and brick-making industries of central Ontario; while later, with the building of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it became a hub for summer tourist and cottager activity. Known to the cognoscenti as “Coby”, it hosts the annual Fresh Water Summit and the Coboconk Duck Derby. In town, you’ll find “Canada’s smallest jail” while a short drive southwest will take you to Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Fenelon Falls. (Inc. 1874) As you cruise along the Trent-Severn Waterway north west of Bobcaygeon you’ll eventually come to Lock 34. Welcome to the bustling village of Fenelon Falls. With a roaring waterfall at the heart of the community, the village has lots to offer its many admirers. Whether its outdoor recreation, a bit of shopping, a cultural event, or a dash of history, the “Jewel of the Kawarthas”, has it. To learn more, pick up a copy of Explore Fenelon Falls 2017 at the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Office at the locks. Kinmount. (Est ~1850s) The landscape is different in Kinmount. The deep, dark woods and looming, rocky hills of the Canadian Shield surround this tiny village. First home to the Huron, settlers from the United Kingdom arrived in the 1850s, followed later in 1874, by a large group of Icelandic railway workers. This group, identified as one of the first Icelandic settlements in Canada, met ill fortune due to poor health standards in their

work camp. Today, this small tourist village with its rich history is eclectic in spirit and interest. After touring its beautiful sawmill, railway station and artisan shops, visit the Highland Cinema to discover a mesmerizing labyrinth of Hollywood paraphernalia. Looking for solitude? Visit the Dharma Centre, 400-acre mediation retreat in the hills southeast of town. Kirkfield. (Est. 1864) Tiny Kirkfield has two big attractions. For history buffs and boaters, there’s the Kirkfield Lift Lock. Situated at Lock 36 of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it’s the second highest hydraulic lift lock in the world (lifting boats 15 m) and is designated as being at the highest elevation on the water route. For birders and nature buffs, there’s Carden Alvar Provincial Park. One of province’s newest parks, it has been identified as a globally rare ecosystem. Public access is limited to two secured hiking trails due to its extremely sensitive habitat. Parking and washrooms are available at the trailhead. Lindsay. (Inc. 1859) Lindsay, one of the larger commercial centres in the Kawarthas, features a historic downtown, a mall and large retail outlets. The town was first settled by an American family, the Purdys, who built a dam on the Scugog River in 1827, followed by a sawmill and gristmill around which the community grew. At first, Lindsay – named after the surveyor’s assistant who died accidentally while plotting its streets and lots—was a lumber and farming hub. After the introduction of the railway, it became a manufacturing

centre for over a hundred years. Today, its economic focus is agriculture and tourism. Spend a day exploring Lindsay’s downtown boutiques, strolling the walking trails that follow the Scugog River, and step back in time at the Olde Gaol Museum. Norland. (Est. 1862) As you drive towards Norland, you can’t help but notice a change in the landscape; from rolling hills, farms and woods, to the dark coniferous forests and steep granite outcrops of the Canadian Shield. You’ve entered “The Land Between”; a unique transitional area containing features of the two ecosystems it borders. Norland is situated on the pristine Gull River and offers boating, canoeing and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Its public access beach can be found at #74 Shadow Lake Rd 3, off Hwy 35, south of the village. Rosedale. (Est. ~1873) South of Coboconk, Rosedale’s Lock 35 is popular stop for Trent-Severn boaters and bird watchers. As of 2016, you can try “glamping” at one of Parks Canada o-TENTik sites available there. Call 1-877-737-3783 for details. Sturgeon Point. (Inc. 1899) A short drive west of Bobcaygeon, scenic Sturgeon Point has been a beloved summer vacation destination for over 150 years. Steeped in history, this tiny hamlet features excellent swimming at its public beach, basketball at its wooded park, and great fishing at the government wharf. The 100-year-old, octagonal Sturgeon Point Union Church is a must-see. Explore Bobcaygeon 2018 45

Chamber President Welcome I am so pleased that one of the first things I get to do, as the recently elected president, is to welcome you to Bobcaygeon, in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes. Since its beginning in the early 1800s Bobcaygeon has lured fishing, boating and logging to the area and more recently because of its beauty with the many trees, lakes, rivers and streams , the arrival of the cottager has evolved naturally from the peaceful surroundings, making the perfect escape from urban centres. Still an area of relaxation and peaceful retreats, Bobcaygeon has become a great activity centre for boating and fishing as it’s located on the Trent-Severn Waterway which has 386 km. of rivers and canals from Trenton to Georgian Bay.

Experience too the shopping, a range of restaurants, banking, accommodation, B & Bs, motels and small resorts and within a short distance, Theatre, Kawartha Settlers’ Village and the museum. Use Explore Bobcaygeon to discover the region, visit the businesses featured in its pages to enjoy some of the annual events we bring to entertain you: The US/Canada Walleye Competition in May, Unlock the Summer in June with music and Cruisefest in September with classic cars. A Warm Welcome is here for you! Visit www.Bobcaygeon.org for details.
