Jamie Schmale Member of ParliamentTRENT-SEVERN WATERWAY
The Trent-Severn Waterway links Lake Ontario with Lake Huron, more than 386 kilometres. There are 45 locks along the system that make navigation easier, including Lock 32 in Bobcaygeon.
Back in 1832, the government of Upper Canada built the first lock on the system, Lock 32, here in Bobcaygeon. It was around this lock, and nearby grist and sawmills built by founder Thomas Need, that the village took root. It was built between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes, allowing the lumber industry to boom.
Bobcaygeon has been designated as a Trent-Severn Trail Town. Boat, paddle, cycle, hike or drive along this renowned inland passageway through historic lock stations and into quaint communities with unique offerings for every visitor.

ABOUT BOBCAYGEON
The scenic town of Bobcaygeon sits on three islands.
These islands are connected by bridges with Sturgeon Lake to the west and Pigeon Lake on the east. It is about an hour drive from Peterborough and two hours from Toronto.
Lock 32 of the Trent-Severn Waterway system runs right through the centre of the Village bringing a steady flow of boaters to the area every year. Bobcaygeon is a historic, unique town with friendly people and can be your stepping stone to activities and events for the whole family.
A visit to the Bobcaygeon area offers something for everyone, from shops, restaurants, art galleries and museums, to professional theatre, watersports and music. You can drive, boat, paddle, cycle or enjoy a leisurely stroll through our parks.
However you get here and however long you stay, you’ll enjoy your time here in Bobcaygeon and area.
OUR HERITAGE
Bobcaygeon was incorporated as a village in 1876, and became known as the “Hub of the Kawarthas”.
Its recorded name bob-ca-je-wan-unk comes either from the Mississauga Ojibway word baabaagwaajiwanaang “at the very shallow currents”, giishkaabikojiwanaang “at the cliffed cascades” or obaabikojiwanaang “at currented rocky narrows”, or from the French beau bocage “beautiful hedged farmland”.
Thomas Need, who arrived in 1832, is recognized as the founder of Bobcaygeon and built a sawmill, gristmill, and the first store. In 1844, Need sold his profitable business interests to Mossom Boyd, and returned to England.
Boyd built up a logging enterprise that was recognized as the third-largest logging operation in Upper Canada.
That success brought more settlers to the Bobcaygeon area, which is today one of the largest communities in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

“FOR ALL YOUR HEALTH NEEDS”
ON THE WATER
The Bobcaygeon area is known for having some of the freshest, cleanest water on the planet.
Whether you’re boating, swimming or enjoying a leisurely paddle along the shoreline, you will never forget Mother Nature’s beauty.
If you’re taking the tour on your own vessel, local marinas offer supplies and repairs or overnight mooring and internet service. There’s also space at Lock 32 for overnight mooring but space is limited.
You can also enjoy the beauty and history of our area from the water by kayak, canoe, paddleboard or even a

houseboat. Get some exercise or relax on a floating vacation home.
If you’d rather find a sunny spot for a picnic and put your toes in the sand, the Bobcaygeon area offers pristine parks and beaches. Order lunch from one of the local restaurants or cook up something from the Farmers’ Market.
Bobcaygeon Beach Park is just a short walk along the boardwalk from the Lock. This popular park has undergone renovations in the past year to make it even more visitor-friendly.
River View Park is a bit out of the town centre, about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Lock. It has a more natural water access, with a grassy park area that goes right to the water’s edge.
For those who prefer an indoor pool experience, the Forbert Memorial Pool is a short car-ride from downtown or a healthy walk from the Lock. The Pool is located on River Park Road.
There’s a special place for families at Tommy Anderson Park, too. A full splash pad, washroom facilities, playground and a sports field make this the perfect place to spend some time with the kids.
You can also grab a picnic lunch and sit beside the lock area, watching boats go drifting past and the wonder of the technology of the lock system.
ARTS & CULTURE
The Bobcaygeon area will not only inspire you with its beauty and splendour, but we will also entertain you!
You can enjoy a “Shakespeare in the Park” vibe at Kawartha Settlers’ Village when Driftwood Theatre comes to town in August.
For music lovers, relax by the Lock on Thursday nights when the Bobcaygeon Music Council presents Concerts in the Park. You can also enjoy local musicians at the bars and pubs around the area. Check online for the latest in local events at www.bobcaygeon.org.
Art afficienados are encouraged to take one of the many self-guided studio tours throughout the season, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process. There are also world-class art shows and festivals showcasing the best the Kawarthas has to offer. Galleries, large and small, indoor and outdoor, make your art experience complete.

Over 85 Years of Tradition & Quality
A long history of memories, tradition and family values are at the heart of Kawartha Dairy. Proud to be 100% Canadian-owned, still operated by our family in Bobcaygeon.
Ever since our parents and grandparents Jack and Ila Crowe started Kawartha Dairy in 1937, we have been proud to use fresh milk and cream, right from local farmers. We also pack our products within 24 hours of the dairy farm. We’re proud to still make our delicious, rich, and creamy, premium ice cream the traditional way.
In the beginning, we delivered milk by horse and wagon, washed milk bottles by hand and used ice from the lake as our refrigeration system. Our operations have certainly grown but we still make all our products right in Bobcaygeon.
Our Bobcaygeon store is just a short walk from downtown, offering over 45 ice cream flavours and countless memories. With flavours like Moose Tracks, Salty Caramel Truffle, and Mint Chip, we have something for everyone.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Bobcaygeon or at any of our ten stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support.
