The Township Of Selwyn

Municipality of Trent Lakes

Welcome to one of the most beautiful areas in the Kawarthas… the Municipality of Trent Lakes and the hamlet of Buckhorn. The scenery is spectacular and the people are genuine and caring. There is a brochure put out by the Municipality entitled ‘Discover Trent Lakes’ so be sure to pick one up. This will lead you to areas throughout the municipality and you will get a chance to win some fine prizes just for taking a tour…it’s all free and fun to complete. Buckhorn is the southern extremity of Trent Lakes and Kinmount is our most northern area. Trent Lakes is 860 square kilometres in size and there are approximately 300 km of roads to take you on several excursions. I am so proud to be the Mayor of Trent Lakes and to call this my home. In 1980 I was a tourist and soon after became a full-time resident with a home and business. Enjoy your visit and be sure to tell a friend about your Trent Lakes experience.

On behalf of the members of Council, staff and the residents of the Township of Selwyn, I would like to extend our warmest welcome and invite you to spend some time exploring our beautiful community! The Township of Selwyn is situated north of the city of Peterborough and is bordered almost entirely by lakes. Selwyn boasts many attractions and events that enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Along with the many beautiful lakes, parks and trails, the Township also provides excellent recreational facilities, heritage and cultural sites, shopping, restaurants, festivals, entertainment and accommodations. I encourage you to visit www. selwyntownship.ca for a list of events or to plan your stay. Information is also available by calling (705) 292-9507 or (877) 213-7419. Receive the latest Township news by liking us on Facebook or following us on Twitter @SelwynTownship. Best wishes for an enjoyable vacation! Sincerely,

Bev Matthews Mayor, Municipality of Trent Lakes

Canada’s 150th Put on your red and white this year! Canada celebrates 150 years of confederation with a number of events in communities throughout the area. But first, a little history lesson: 150 years ago, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia united to create the Canadian Confederation, called the Dominion of Canada. On account of the British North America Act that became law July 1, 1867, these British colonies would be recognized as an independent nation. In the years that followed, the other provinces and territories joined the Dominion, making today’s Canada a mari usque ad mare (“from sea to sea”). The 150th anniversary of Confederation gives Canadians the opportunity to get involved in their communities and to celebrate together our shared values, our achievements, our majestic environment and our country’s place in the world. The major themes of the 150th anniversary of Confederation are diversity and inclusion, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environment and youth. There are so many great reasons to visit this region all year round – whether you wind your way through the Trent-Severn Waterway, explore the backcountry on foot or on skis, or soak up the relaxed vibe at a cottage, I know you’ll have a memorable visit. And as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this year, I hope you will take some time to not only experience some of our greatest assets – the land and the water around us – but also to reflect on what it means to be Canadian. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the values we as Canadians hold close to our hearts: diversity, inclusion, and generosity of spirit. We have much to be proud of on this historic occasion, so I encourage you to join the party – in beautiful Buckhorn! Maryam Monsef, MP Peterborough-Kawartha

Buckhorn was the first lock let out to tender in September 1882. Buckhorn’s Lock 31 is 31.4 metres (103 feet) in length and 9.7m (or 32 feet) wide. The average lift is 3.5m (11.5 feet). Buckhorn’s Lock 31 is one of the few locks along the TSW to offer special docking for smaller watercraft -- canoes, kayaks and PWCs. The docks are closer to water level and feature speciallydesigned hookups. Please be considerate of other boaters using these docks. Lock 31 is a short walk to the hamlet of Buckhorn where boaters can find various facilities. Good lake cruising can be found above and below the lock. Please note there is a maximum of 1 night mooring period available at this lock station because of its very busy use. In 2016, more than 7,600 vessels went through Lock 31. We’re expecting more travel this summer, as Parks Canada is celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday with free lockage all season. GPS Coordinates: 44 33’20.10”N 78 20’45.85”W

Fishing

Lots of Water Means Fishing!

By Rick Daniels

The following is a quick fishing overview to give you some vital info!

Photo Credit: Elaine Johnston & Pamela Richards

Photo Credit: Steve Murdoch 8 Explore Buckhorn & Area 2017

I have caught Musky on a jig and a worm while fishing for walleye and caught smallmouth bass almost the same size as the lure while fishing for Muskie. Point being; you’re not going to catch anything with a dry line. Panfish: Sunfish, perch, crappie -- I find these the most fun to catch especially with an ultra-light rod and reel. This set up is the perfect size for your young children or grandchildren. All you need is a small hook, a box of worms or pail of small minnows and a few split shot sinkers, if need be. Just make sure the fish takes the bait first prior to setting the hook. Small jigs with rubber worms and small lures of any kind also work well. Walleye: These traditionally are cold water, lowlight feeders so the fishing is sometimes better during dusk or dawn hours, trolling dead slow with a 4” bluish Rapala type lure. You may find luck during the day with the same presentation if it’s overcast, rainy or choppy. If it’s a clear calm day, try driving a banana jig tipped with a minnow to the bottom of a deep, thick weed bed. Bass: These fish are predominantly an “ambush type” predator and can be caught almost any time of day or night under almost any conditions. Spinner baits, in line spinners, crank baits, artificial worms, real worms all work well. Smallmouth bass tend to hang on or near rock shoals, points, islands, bridges, docks, etc. Largemouth bass seem to prefer large stumpy back bays, deep lily pads and bull rushes close to deep drop offs. Muskie: If you have ever researched fishing for these beasts you would have undoubtedly read “a fish of a thousand casts”. That’s why I simply do not cast for them, I’m too old and my arm gets too sore, I troll. You will need a good quality bait caster or trolling combo with heavy duty line and high test terminal tackle. A 6” to 10” solid, not jointed, lure is the order of the day and the secret -- fast troll …about 6 km per hour along the outside edges of deep weed beds. Check out our website for more fishing tips. Good Luck and Happy Fishing! Rick Daniels is Owner / Operator of Chemong Lake Fishing Charters www.kawarthafishing.com MuskyGuide@bell.net 705-292-5449

The Buckhorn area boasts some of the most popular events in the Kawarthas.

The Buckhorn Community Centre (BCC) plays host to a number of successful events each season. Celebrating 40 years in 2017, the BCC is one of the only facilities of its kind in the province. It is not owned by the municipality but keeps its lights on through fundraising, membership and donations. At the BCC, you’ll find a Spring Craft Show (Victoria Day Weekend), live dinner theatre in the Spring, Summer and Fall, Heritage Day Celebrations in February, the Harvest Craft Show on Thanksgiving Day weekend and the world-renowned Buckhorn Fine Art Festival in August. Originally started to raise funds for the new BCC in 1977 the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival has become the art show and sale to visit, one of the top 100 Events in the province. For art lovers, there are also a number of smaller, local art shows throughout the season. Brushstrokes of Bobcaygeon hosts Colours 10 Explore Buckhorn & Area 2017

of Cavendish at the Cavendish Community Centre north of the village in July. Berry picking isn’t actually an event, but McLean and Buckhorn Berry Farms, just south of the village, put on Maplefest in March, a Strawberry Festival in July and Pumpkin Fest in the Fall. Check out their website at mcleanberryfarm.ca for all the details! There’s no better way to celebrate Canada’s birthday than with a free, family-oriented event! Come to the BCC on July 1 for plenty of activities for the kids and one of the area’s largest indoor/outdoor yard sales! Fireworks light up the sky at dusk and, of course there will be cake! If quilting is up your alley, you’ll want to check out the Harvest of Quilts Show & Sale in September at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club. No visit to the area would be complete without stopping at the Curve Lake Pow Wow in September. It’s a truly spiritual experience and an event for the whole family. In 2017, the Buckhorn District Tourist Association sponsors the Kawartha Outdoor Adventure Weekend, September 16 and 17. In addition to the Kid’s Fishing Derby at

Situated on 10 acres of woodland, the Centre offers an 8,000 square foot main building, 11 pavilions, a covered patio and seasonal garden with water feature – the perfect place to make your event one to remember. We also offer an amazing range of diverse programming and events, top-notch craft shows, dinner theatre, dances, summer craft and farmer market, exercise and gourmet cooking classes, art workshops and more. Of special note is the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Interpretive Trail. This 1.5km hike along the Mississauga River boasts some of the most incredible scenery in the Kawarthas. Several numbered signposts along the trail coincide with the trail brochure. Visitors can read as they travel along the trail, and learn about the story of the nearby Mississagua River, its history and how it is linked to settlement and the history of the Buckhorn area. Sandy beaches and picnic areas provide enjoyment for those who prefer to stay on land. And for the duffers, the Buckhorn area offers a number of world-class courses. Many are designed to take advantage of the beautiful, natural landscape. Whether you’re looking for a 9-hole course or a more challenging 18-hole facility, you can find it here. Buckhorn also offers some of Central Ontario’s most rewarding recreational canoeing opportunities. You may set out on a leisurely paddle along the shoreline of Buckhorn Lake, or for the adventurous, a two-day trip down the fast-running Mississagua River. For those who love the outdoors in winter, the Buckhorn area doesn’t disappoint. Kilometres of snowmobile trails, and yearround accommodation with activities for the whole family are just a few reasons why visitors come to see us when Mother Nature puts down her blanket of white.

Photo Credit: Laurie Downey Some tourists to the Buckhorn area have never seen a live bear. So they head off to one of our transfer stations to see the local wildlife cruise through the garbage looking for a culinary delight. It’s one thing to stand on the safe side of the fence, at a good distance to snap a few photos and gaze upon the beautiful creatures. It’s another to try to feed the bears to get them to come closer, or worse, to climb the fence to get a better shot up close. While our bears may seem friendly, they are still wild animals! So stay well back and away.

While you’re here, you’ll want to visit some of the historical and interesting sites. Don’t forget to take a photo at one of our “Selfie Stations”!

Buckhorn’s Wall of Honour The Wall of Honour is a memorial to our men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Afghan War. Erected in 2011, the Wall features each soldier’s photo, name, rank, age, hometown, unit and cause and date of death. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, there are two granite benches where visitors can sit for some quiet reflection.

Adam & Eve Rocks A short stroll or drive down Adam & Eve Road, on the north side, reside two large glacial rocks. Named after the original man and woman in Christianity, these remnants of the last ice age are said to have mystical powers. Folklore has it that if a young couple can hold hands and each touch one of the rocks, their lives will be blessed. Sandy Lake Folklore tells a story about beautiful Sandy Lake, also known as “Lake of Spirits”. In the south bay, visible from Lakehurst Road is a large, heart shaped rock known as the “Giants Heart”. There on calm days, ripples form over the rock formation, causing it to look as though the “Heart” is beating. This lake is land locked and has no feeder river. But water flows out of the lake and down Sandy Creek to Buckhorn Lake. Where does this water come from?

Buckhorn Buck Everyone’s familiar with the town’s unofficial mascot, the Buckhorn Buck. He was repaired in 2015, after the fiberglass figure was damaged. Unfortunately, there is now a barrier around the Buck to stop folks from climbing on him and causing more damage. But no photo journal of your trip to our town would be complete without a selfie with the Buck! 20 Explore Buckhorn & Area 2017

Wherever you’ve come from – the busy city life or another rural area – welcome to Buckhorn! As a new “local”, it’s a good idea to get the lay of the land. And meeting the right people is a start. A stop at the Buckhorn Community Centre will probably set you up for activities that will keep you as busy as you want to be. Volunteering at the BCC or attending any number of their ongoing programs is a good way to meet people in your new environment. From weekly cards to exercise classes, the BCC is the hub of activities in our hamlet. Any visit to the Home Hardware can provide information about who to hire to help around your new home or cottage. Plumbers, electricians, contractors and other tradespeople are local, too. So the friendly staff at the hardware store are sure to know how to point you in the right direction. When in doubt, stop by the BDTA’s Welcome Centre (adjacent to the LCBO). Our great staff all live in the area and can help with those questions … even the dumb ones!

From the early days of the logging industry to today’s family-friendly activities, our area has grown into a popular destination … not only for visitors but those looking for a permanent, more laid-back way of life. There’s so much to see and do in the area. You can experience the wonder of nature, taking a hike or leisurely walk along the Interpretive Trail at the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site. Our lakes and rivers are

full of fish, just waiting to take your line. The Buckhorn Community Centre hosts a number of activities and events including the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival, one of Canada’s best-known exhibitions. There are art galleries featuring local and international artists that will please the eye. Another important stop on your tour is the Curve Lake Cultural Centre. Located on the Curve Lake Reserve just south of Buckhorn, it is a source of knowledge dedicated to keeping traditions and ceremonies alive within the community. Throughout the area we’ve set up “Selfie Stations.” Take a photo and upload it to our facebook page. You could win a gift certificate to get your own Buckhorn swag at the Welcome Centre. As we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, we invite you to join our community to experience the best in the Kawarthas. Drop by the Welcome Centre (conveniently located next to the LCBO) for more information to make the most of your visit. Follow us on facebook and twitter and please visit our website (buckhorn.ca) to stay up to speed on events in the area. Enjoy your stay! Deb Crossen, President, BDTA
