Trent Lakes recently purchased the vacant waterfront lot between the restaurant and the variety store so be sure to keep an eye on it for future changes. We have big plans for this parcel of land all under the Community Improvement Plan umbrella. People in Buckhorn are proud residents and love this little area in the world. and many First Nations members live in the community year-round or seasonally on some of the islands in Lovesick Lake.

Buckhorn, or Hall’s Bridge as it was known, was already a busy milling community by the latter part of the nineteenth century. John Hall emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in 1810, later moving to Peterborough. In 1828 he purchased property on both sides of the rapids on what became Buckhorn Lake in Harvey Township and over the next four years constructed a dam and mill complex. When the lumber markets and the forests began to fade, so did many of the settlements. French Canadians, Irish immigrants and other lumber labourers pulled out to try their hand at work to support their families elsewhere. The area is rich in early First Nations sites, As the Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Buckhorn area.

DID YOU KNOW • Lumbering was a chief export industry with a number of mills built in the area producing squared timbers, ship’s masts, shingles, barrels, etc. These products were transported via the inland waterways to Quebec for shipment to Great Britain and Europe. A large portion was also shipped down the Erie Canal (opened in 1825) to New York. • John Hall became the first postmaster, and for matters of the Royal Mail, the settlement was named “Hall’s Bridge”. However, John Hall’s collection of deer antlers, which he displayed on the outside walls of his mills, which gave rise to the name Buckhorn. It wasn’t until 1936 the hamlet became officially recognized as by its present name. • John Hall died in1883 at the age of 96 years, but not before he gave every female in Hall’s Bridge (Buckhorn) a plot of land to build a home in order to encourage the continuing growth of the hamlet.

This is a special place, with so many great reasons to visit all year round. You can spend a summer day winding your way through the Trent-Severn Waterway, embrace winter by exploring the backcountry on foot or on skis, or relax by watching that perfect sunset on one of our many lakes, no matter the season. Whether you spend your days checking out one of our many community festivals, reeling in the catch of the day fishing, or finding that special souvenir at a local business, there is so much to see and do. Trent-Severn Waterway With more than 386 kilometres of the Trent Severn Waterway, you can take your vessel all the way from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron. Forty-five locks along the system make navigation easier, including Lock 31 in Buckhorn.

Lock 31 is 31.4 metres (103 feet) long by 9.7 metres (32 feet) wide. The first lock let out to tender in September 1882, Lock 31 was refurbished in 2017 as was the structure under the County Road 23 bridge over the lock. Just a short walk to the hamlet of Buckhorn with restaurants and shopping, boaters are only allowed to moor for one night, because Lock 31 is the second busiest lock on the system. This part of the canal also features special docks for smaller watercraft including canoes and jet skis. Please be considerate of these smaller vessels. Every year, the hamlet of Buckhorn celebrates its connection to the Trent-Severn Waterway with “Rock the Locks”, an event for the whole family. Vendors, exhibits and activities line Main Street as visitors stroll along the canal. FEBRUARY 17 Heritage Day

This annual event celebrates everything that makes Canada, and our local area, great. Held at the Buckhorn Community Centre on Lakehurst Road, Heritage Day features demonstrations of quilting, weaving and wood carving as well as entertainment by local musicians, horse-drawn carriage rides, public skating on the Buckhorn Sportspad, a baking contest and historical information from the Ojibwa First Nation. March 10/11, 17/28 & 24/25 Maplefest

Nothing is sweeter than springtime at McLean Berry Farm’s annual Maplefest celebration. There are activities for the whole family, including wagon rides, pancakes with fresh maple syrup and cruising through the maple bush to learn how maple syrup is made. More than 80 artisans and crafters come together to show off their wares at the Buckhorn Community Centre. It’s a wonderful way to kick off the summer home and cottage season. You can find home décor, handmade furniture, garden accessories, one-of-a-kind designer clothing, jewellery and even gastronomical delights. July 1 Canada Day

Join the community to celebrate Canada Day at the Buckhorn Community Centre. Enjoy activities for the whole family and there’s no admission charge! Yard sales take over Festival Park, kids can get yup close and personal with the goats and other animals at the petting zoo and take part in interactive games and crafts. August 17-19 Buckhorn Fine Art Festival

Voted one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario, the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival features more than 100 artists from across Canada, exhibiting in the beautiful Festival Park at the Buckhorn Community Centre. This is one show where you can meet the artists in person and find out about their inspiration for your favourite painting, sculpture or photograph. There’s an amateur art competition and youth art competition as well. You can find out more at buckhornfineart.com.

September 7-9 Quilt Show

These are not your granny’s quilts, but works of art. The Buckhorn Quilters’ Guild hosts this special quilt show, featuring gorgeous designs and techniques. It’s at the Buckhorn Community Centre and you can visit buckhornquilters.com.

Ever seen a pumpkin shot out of a cannon? That’s one of the popular activities at Buckhorn

Globus Theatre was established in 2003 to create partnerships with theatre companies and venues in various countries, and provide diverse and accessible theatre for communities within these areas. In 2006, the Lakeview Arts Barn, a 150-seat black-box theatre was established in Bobcaygeon. Lots of Water Means Fishing!

Fishing

Whether you are a resident occasional angler or on vacation for a few weeks, it’s nice to have a few handy tips to make your fishing experience a little more fruitful. It’s impossible to cover every technique and variable but here are a few suggestions to make your fishing day more productive. Fish do not always do what they’re supposed to or bite when they should. The following is their usual behavior. In the spring, fish are still hanging around shallow spawning beds eating other species’ small fry. As the days get warmer in summer, the fish start heading into deeper, cooler, oxygen-rich water – especially in shallower lakes. As we move into the fall and the weeds start dying off, fish tend to look for green oxygenating weeds. Even in the spring or summer, if you run into a large swath of dead weeds, move on. Which brings us to another point as another guide said to me; “You know – fish swim.” If you’re fishing from a boat or even from shore, don’t 16 Explore Buckhorn & Area 2018

stay in the same place all day, even if you had great luck the day before. I have approximately 25 “fishing holes” I frequent with my clients and with no rhyme or reason, the spot that was DEAD for days will start producing or vice versa. I find if you’re not sure where the fish are, it’s best to drift over large areas. It won’t be long until you discover a pattern forming of the preferred depth and structure of the day. There are certain species that are noted for hanging around certain areas. Perch seem to like to rock shoals and drop offs. Since perch seem to be the number one food source for Small Mouth Bass, if you’re catching perch, it’s usually not too long after that you start catching smallies. Large Mouth Bass seem to like weedy, stumpy back bays and shallows near cover like overhanging trees or under docks or piers. Walleye, during the summer, like to bury themselves in deep thick weed beds. There are plenty of more fishing tips on my web site. Happy Fishing! Free Family Fishing

Take advantage of Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Events – February 17 to 19, 2018 and June 30 to July 8, 2018 – when you don’t need a license. All other times, you need to have a license to fish and there are restrictions throughout the year. Visit www.ontariofamilyfishing.com for more information.

Kids Fishing Derbies

Organizations in the Buckhorn area also host a number of kids’ fishing derbies throughout the season. These informal gatherings at area resorts give children a chance to experience one of the best activities in the Kawarthas.

Ice Fishing

If you’ve never tried ice fishing, this may be the season to start. For anglers new to this sport, you might want to start on a sunny day with low winds. Perch, bluegill and crappie are the species you will be fishing for and there are lots of each species in our lakes to keep you busy. Be sure to check to ensure the ice is safe for walking on before you venture out. Also, check the fishing regulations at www.ontario.ca to make sure you are fishing in season and with the proper licences.

Hiking

The Kawartha Highlands Signature Site features a 1.5km hiking trail along the Mississauga River. It boasts the most incredible scenery in the Kawarthas. There is a special interpretive trail that tells the story of the River, its history and how it is linked to settlement and the history of the Buckhorn area.

Geocaching

Getting outdoors has never been this much fun! With an adventurous spirit, a good sense of direction and a GPS device, you can hunt for treasures all through the Buckhorn area. Most caches don’t contain valuables – just a log book and some small trinkets for you to take. Replace what you take to be left behind for the next geocacher. Some are simple to find; others are a more rigorous test of your orienteering skills; others might require you to puzzle out an answer to get to the log book. Stargazing

We are blessed here in the Buckhorn area to have one of the darkest night skies in the Kawarthas. Whether you know your way around the constellations or just want to count meteors during one of the annual showers, just lie back on the dock or in your favourite lawnchair and admire Mother Nature’s lights. You can also check to see if there will be the Northern Lights at www.aurora-service.org/aurora-forecast/. Birdwatching

The Buckhorn area is home to hundreds of species of birds. Drew Monkman of Peterborough is a nature author who’s been birdwatching for a number of years. He says there’s a good chance you’ll see a new species of bird to add to your list. Because the land is so varied in the Buckhorn area, there are a number of natural habitats that attract dozens of species. Wetlands and highlands, woodlands and open field are our feathered friends call home. Birdwatching is a relaxing pastime and relatively inexpensive. Just some good shoes or wellies, warm clothes and a set of binoculars can set you off on an adventure.

BURLEIGH FALLS

The Falls are created by a narrowing in the flow of water between Lovesick Lake and Lower Buckhorn Lake on the west and Stoney Lake to the east. Not only a beautiful sight to see, but also popular with kayakers and divers. You never know what you’ll find beneath the surface.

CURVE LAKE CULTURAL CENTRE

Created in 1988, Curve Lake Cultural Centre is a source of knowledge dedicated to keeping traditions and ceremonies alive within the community. The Cultural Centre is a place to immerse yourself in the history and culture of First Nations people. BUCKHORN CENOTAPH

The new Cenotaph and Memorial Pathway were installed at the Buckhorn Community Centre in time for Remembrance Day Services in November, 2017. The “Heroes of Yesterday” Maple Leaf monument is dedicated to those local men and women who lost their lives during wartime. There is also a Memory Lane walkway laid with stones sponsored by community members.

Nothing tastes better than the freshpicked produce, homegrown beef or fresh-caught fish. Even when you dine out in the Buckhorn area, you’ll find hints of our heritage. The Cody Inn, known for its delicious Chinese food has a history. The original house was

built in 1905 as a private residence and in 1921, was converted into a hotel named The Windsor House. It became well-known as a luxurious fishing lodge and folks from as far away as the States came to stay. During one of Cody Inn’s several transitions, the signatures of several guests were found on the original brickwork. They can still be seen today. Rumour has it that Colonel Harlan Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken used to frequent The Windsor House for his vacations. In 1975, the lodge was purchased by Francis Cody, who renamed it Cody Inn which it remains today. In 2000 the Inn was turned into a restaurant and today, owners Richard Lam and Ken Young offer some of the best Chinese food in the Kawarthas!

Finding the right read to help you unwind is easy in Buckhorn. The Trent Lakes Library features not only the latest best-sellers, but a full selection of Canadian works, DVDs, and novels for every reading level. Many of the shops in Buckhorn are within easy walking distance of the locks. Taking a walk through the store can not only give you some insight into our heritage, but you can also browse for something new, too. In 2017, the Buckhorn Home Hardware opened the old Buckhorn Lodge as their seasonal retail establishment. Located right beside the hardware store, this beautiful historic building was restored to some of its original glory.

For more than 40 years, the BCC is the hub of this community. Today, the staff and volunteers offer a number of ongoing programs and special events for every member of the family. There are regular exercise classes, seniors’ cards, dinner theatre and craft shows. The BCC is a not-for-profit organization that relies on special events and donations from the community to raise funds to keep the lights on.
