The Jewel of the Kawarthas
Magic happens when you situate a village where one lake tumbles down several meters to meet another. The thrill of our miniature “Niagara Falls” is a delightful surprise if you can make your way down to the best vantage point. Look for the “Falls” sign on the north-east side of the bridge and follow the path and stairs down to the water. Over the past 2 years, community volunteers have polished this diamond-in-the-rough a little more, by clearing brush, planting native species and opening vistas of the falls and limestone gorge. In winter, the falls are especially awe inspiring, as sunlight glints off the ice crystals and rushing water beneath a cloud of vapour. Interpretive signs will also enlighten you about the hydroelectric generating station.

year. The historic canal system boasts two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks (Kirkfield, Peteborough), a marine railway (Big Chute), and the highest point of fresh water elevation (Balsam Lake) from which you can circumnavigate the world by water. If you are vacationing in June, you’ll want to catch the Fresh Water Summit in Coboconk which helps celebrate that claim to fame (canadafreshwatersummit.com). Lock 34, one of the earliest locks to be built on the historic Trent Severn Waterway,
is one of Fenelon Falls’ prominent features, and a great spot to watch the boats climb and descend the 7 meter height difference between Cameron and Sturgeon Lakes. Don’t forget the frozen yogurt or Kawartha Dairy ice-cream! Lock 34 offers boaters plenty of prime docking space with hydro and water hookups. Restaurants, shops, parks, and services are all just a stroll away. There is a public boat launch adjacent to the dock, towards Garnet Graham Park. Lock 35, at the northwest end of Cameron Lake, takes you to Balsam Lake and the village of Rosedale. This summer, experience the unique blend of homey comfort and a taste of outdoor adventure with Parks Canada’s three “oTENTiks” available at the lock. See Accommodations, page 36. In any direction, you’ll find serene waters, charming villages, peaceful parks, delightful beaches, and sparkling scenery. Be sure to check the Parks Canada TrentSevern Waterway website at pc.gc.ca/trent for up-to-date hours of lock operation.

What could be finer than living on the water for days or weeks, sampling peaceful sunrises, the catch of the day, a swim anytime, a bistro lunch in one community, and a concert in the next along the way? There are several houseboat companies, such as Egan Houseboats, at the south end of Pigeon Lake, who would be happy to set you up for your charmed vacation on the Trent Severn Waterway. Kawartha Lakes are well-known for world-class fishing for walleye, bass, panfish, and more on our many lakes. The warm water fishery consists of species such as Walleye, Small and Large Mouth Bass, Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Bullhead, Sucker, and Carp. Each lake has its own characteristics that makes it a favourite among its fans. Nearby Bobcaygeon hosts the annual Canada/ US Walleye Tournament in late May (www.bobcaygeon. org), attracting anglers from far and wide. You might try your luck dropping a line from the dock too.

The Kawartha region is steeped in history, which you can easily access by visiting more than a dozen small museums and significant historical sites (see page 17) within an hour’s drive from Fenelon Falls. Start with Maryboro Lodge, the historic home of 1830s town founder James Wallis. Today it houses the Fenelon Falls Museum with an impressive collection of regional artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, including the art of early pioneer Anne Langton. This year’s theme is “Tourism in Old Ontario”. The museum offers a pioneer school program, strawberry social (see Canada Day, page 10), workshops, and historical speakers (see Events Schedule). A delightful Wednesday Afternoon Tea is served on the porch 2 to 4 p.m. in July and August. Have a taste of riding the rails in the Kawarthas, or painting a scene from one’s travels in the days before photography, along with a scrumptious dessert. While in a “heritage” mood, you may want to swing by one of several antique dealers around town (see page 27).

More Things to Do
Parks and Gardens
The Fenelon Falls area is blessed with numerous parks and recreation areas for swimming, cycling, walking, winter and summer sports, and powered vehicle recreation. Together with the city’s Parks and Recreation department, there are several community organizations that collaborate to improve and beautify parklands and various corners of town. Some of the floral displays around town (for example, the Lock 34 side of Garnet Graham Park) are the work of the Horticultural Society, still going strong after 95 years. In town, at the west end of Francis Street, Garnet Graham Park features beach swimming, playground equipment and idyllic picnic spots, and is often the venue for community sponsored summer events. Island Park, on the south side of Lock 34, also offers picnic sites. Take a historic walk up the stone steps off Bond Street E. to St. James Park, an enchantingly quiet spot in the shadow of the water tower. This is the site of the original Anglican Church and cemetery. You’ll find pioneer graves and headstones, and may recognize a few names of established families in the area. Verulam Park on Sturgeon Lake, (Kawartha Lakes Road 30 east of Fenelon Falls) is another lovely place to go for a 18 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2016
picnic and swim, and offers a great sunset too. A public boat dock and launch are also available. Birch Point Beach on Balsam Lake provides an additional swimming option. Take Kawartha Lakes Road 8 west to Birch Point Road and go north till you reach the beach. Most summer evenings, the baseball diamonds of Russ Baptiste Park, just behind Jardine Funeral Home, make for a great place to mingle with locals if you like to hear the crack of a bat and ball. There is playground equipment on site to keep kids happily occupied. A concession stand offers the requisite hot dogs and other refreshments. Wildlife is in abundance just off the beaten track, but you might be lucky enough to spot a great blue heron, or an osprey, right off your deck. Friends of the Osprey, a volunteer organization, has worked diligently over the past several years to ensure healthy habitat to keep the impressive birds coming back to nest in this area. A little further afield are: the brand new Carden Alvar Provincial Park, a protected rare grassland ecosystem that is home to the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike and many other bird species (no camping or facilities); Balsam Lake Provincial Park offering camping and a beautiful large beach; and Ken Reid Conservation

Area, which, in addition to picnic and group camping facilities, interpretive trails, and an osprey nest observation area, offers “Howlers Corners” an offleash dog area.
Victoria Rail Trail
Fenelon Falls is the perfect access point to the Victoria Rail Trail, a scenic and historic abandoned railway corridor which runs along the shore of Cameron Lake and north to Kinmount, or south to Lindsay and beyond. During the summer months the bridge crossing Cameron Lake is swung open to allow boater traffic through so there is a short detour through the downtown. The public trail is open all year round for a whole variety of recreation uses.
Gardening
Horticultural Society Events (705-8879755): If you like gardening, connect up with the Horticultural Society, which welcomes all gardeners to informative
workshops, local projects and garden tours, on the 4th Monday of each month from March to November, 7 p.m. at the Seniors’ Club, 58 Murray Street. If you will be staying in the area long enough to garden, you can sign up for a plot in the St. James Community Garden between St. James Anglican Church and the rectory on Bond St. E. Participants are free to grow vegetables and flowers as they wish. Call the church for details (705887-2537).
Cycling
With the Victoria Rail Trail running through Fenelon Falls, cycling is a great way to get up close and personal with the “jewel of the Kawarthas.” But there are lots of other trail possibilities as well. Contact the Kawartha Cycling Club (kawarthacyclingclub.com) to download a selection of free cycling routes for Fenelon Falls and the surrounding area for your own cycling adventure, or join an excursion with the club.

Globus Theatre
It’s always worth planning your stay around live, professional entertainment by Globus Theatre, the company-inresidence at the Lakeview Arts Barn, a short drive south from Fenelon Falls in nearby Bobcaygeon. The LAB is a live-theatre venue in a former working cattle barn. In 1967, it was converted to a dance hall boasting the largest hardwood dance floor in all of Ontario (the floor is still regularly pressed into service), and was further transformed in 2006 into a comfortable 150-seat blackbox theatre, with a bar and dining area. Globus Theatre serves up a thoroughly entertaining and eclectic summer season, as well as special theatre events throughout the year. This year, don’t miss Knickers! A Brief

Dining Bob’s FUN 4 ALL Seasons
Enjoying a meal, or just a snack on the run, is easy in Fenelon Falls. Keep your eye open for Kawartha Dairy ice cream vendors in town, or try a frozen yogurt waffle cone on May Street. Decide for yourself who has the best sweet potato fries. When it’s takeout pizza you want, Godfather’s on Lindsay Street will meet your expectations admirably. And if you’re hoping for real maple syrup on your pancakes, don’t hesitate to head up Highway 35 to the Kawartha Lakes Trading Post. But give yourself time: there is a lot more on offer

at this iconic cottage country store (under new management) than breakfast. There is a delicious and eclectic range of restaurants in the area, especially if you can expand your possibilities with a 20-minute drive to Lindsay or Bobcaygeon (see 26). You can count on the Orchid Bistro, right on May Street, for the exciting flavours of Thai cuisine, well prepared, and rivalling the best Thai eateries in the city. For home cooking, go no further than Sharney’s Diner, a tiny spot on Colborne Street, where chips, dressing and gravy (a Newoundland specialty), Cod au Gratin, and bread pudding are served up amongst more typical offerings. Sharney will cook up an authentic Jiggs Dinner with 24 hours notice. If it’s a view (plus good food) you are looking for, try Fenelon’s newest restaurant, That Place on Cameron, overlooking the lake at the Fenelon Falls Marina, off County Road 8. Sobeys is your go-to for a full range of groceries and specialty items for home dining and barbecues. Whenever possible, owner/manager Mark Knoester stocks local produce like corn on the cob. You’ll find artisanal breads baked daily, a deli counter featuring freshly created pizza and entrées to bring home, a full range of Kawartha Dairy products, and plenty of ways to treat yourself and your family.

Food doesn’t get fresher than what’s on offer at the Fenelon Falls Farmers’ Market, running 11 am to 4 pm on Fridays, May to October, Wednesdays and Fridays in July and August, next to the locks. Remember that you are also in Amish country and can find home-grown produce, maple syrup, home-made baked goods and conserves at family run stands along County Road 8 east of Elm Tree Road. Please slow down for horse-drawn carriages on that stretch of road. You will be in for a treat if you are in Fenelon Falls during Winter Food Fest (see page 16), featuring old-fashioned church suppers – from a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, to a Shepherd’s Pie Feast – at different locations each week. The fundraising dinners also collect food for the Salvation Army Food Bank.

Neighbouring Communities Bobcaygeon: Fenelon Falls residents know they can often save a trip to Lindsay by heading the shorter distance to Bobcaygeon, for services, entertainment, programs and goods they can’t find in Fenelon Falls. Bobcaygeon is a hub for boating, culture and tourism, and home of the Kawartha Dairy. Burnt River: Settled around the same time as Fenelon Falls, the town and river are named for a devastating fire that virtually razed the town in the 1920s. Burnt River is on a popular canoe route, and also along the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor between Fenelon Falls and Kinmount. There is no commercial district. Cameron: The village, between Fenelon Falls and Lindsay, was named after early landowner Duncan Cameron, and is home to a post office and a general store. Local farms offer naturally raised beef, fruit and vegetables, honey, and home-baked goods. Coboconk: A bustling summer hub and busy stop for cottagers, Coboconk is known to locals as “Coby.” It is close to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, is home to Canada’s smallest jail and hosts annual events such as the Fresh Water Summit Festival, Coboconk Duck Derby, and a Santa Claus parade. Pancakes from a traditional recipe are served on the Saturdays of summer long weekends at Christ Church. Kinmount: At one time, six sawmills shipped products from this logging centre by rail and water. The old sawmill and train station are at the centre of what is now called Austin Sawmill Heritage Park, where you will find a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings in the warmer months. Visiting the Kinmount Fair on Labour Day 38 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2016
weekend is a family tradition for many and the Kinmount Artisans Marketplace is a popular shopping destination (reduced hours in the off seasons). The renowned Highlands Cinema, with its own movie memorabilia museum, is another draw. The independent theatre shows first-run movies on multiple screens during the tourist season. The Dharma Centre, a 400acre meditation retreat centre, is located east of Kinmount. Kirkfield: Founded in the late 1800s, the name reflects the attachment of Scottish settlers to their “kirk” or church, and perhaps the Protestant work ethic built into the solid brick homes that line the main street. Kirkfield is the boyhood home of 19th century railroad magnate Sir William MacKenzie. One of the biggest attractions is the Kirkfield Lift Lock, the second highest hydraulic lift-lock in the world (the highest being in Peterborough), with a lift of 15 meters; its completion was quite an accomplishment in 1907. Kirkfield is also the location of a protected rare ecosystem, now Carden Alvar Provincial Park. The site attracts birders and others interested in the unique biodiversity of the area. Lindsay: As the largest town in the City of Kawartha Lakes, many identify Lindsay with the amalgamated municipality itself. Once a manufacturing and railway hub, Lindsay’s economy now focuses on agriculture and tourism. The Lindsay Farmers’ Market, established in 1859 and held Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through October, is one of Ontario’s longest running farmers’ markets. There are more than 35 vendors, offering fresh local produce in season, meats and meat products, breads, and gourmet foods, as well as art and hand made items by local artisans. The downtown has maintained
its historic character and a “shop local” environment. The iconic Academy Theatre continues to host top entertainment as it has for generations. In September, the Lindsay Exhibition or LEX draws crowds to the fairgrounds for agricultural displays, the ever popular midway, and exciting entertainment. Norland: This town is marked by Canadian Shield granite and cedars and pines reminiscent of Group of Seven paintings. Known as “The Land Between,” it sits between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands. Norland boasts quaint traditional resorts, recreational boating, canoeing, swimming and many more ways to relax. Rosedale: Named for early settler Rosa Cameron, its Lock 35 is a popular point of exploration on the Trent Severn Waterway. The canal area is known for its prime birdwatching. Parks Canada oTENTik

sites will be available at Lock 35 in 2016; reserve a site by calling 1-877-737-3783. Village of Sturgeon Point: Incorporated in 1899, this tiny community is a popular destination for a country drive or boat excursion, not to mention weekend and summer retreats of summer residents who have maintained family cottages for generations. The Union Church (Round Church) is a remarkable structure built in 1888 and worth seeing (nondenominational services are held during summer months). The Sturgeon Point 9-hole golf club was built in 1899 and continues to provide a challenging but accessible course at lakeside. Of special note is the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club, which has offered enthusiastic sailing instruction to children for more than 50 years in a friendly, inclusive, neighbourhood atmosphere. The Civic Regatta takes place over the August holiday weekend.

Throughout the summer and into the autumn months the merchants of Fenelon Falls put on several events that spark the imagination of both young and old which makes the village a fun place to visit and to shop. When autumn fades into winter we prepare for the festive season with Santa Day, the last Saturday in
November. This is possibly the largest celebration of Santa in all of Canada. It is a free all-day celebration for children with Santa’s workshop, petting zoo, rides, free snacks, cookie-making, face painting and countless other activities culminating with the Santa Claus parade and fireworks presentation. Fenelon Falls also sparkles because of its many attractions. We have more than 750 feet of docking at the Lock 34 with hydro and water available. There is a park system branching out from the Trent Severn locks along the shores of Cameron Lake that leads to our beaches. The Lock 34 Park extends above the locks for picnics and below the locks for exciting views of the falls and you can cast your line in to catch pickerel or bass or muskie. We have many miles of trails along the old rail tracks that link us to Kinmount and Lindsay. The trails are open year round with summer ATV,s, bicycles, hikers and winter snowmobiles.
