Welcome to Fenelon Falls
A friendly welcome awaits you in this historic and goodnatured village, nestled between two sparkling lakes. Enjoy a stroll along the quaint main street where historic architecture, charming shops and restaurants attest to a proud local economy. Dedicated townsfolk have been hard at work to bring out the true personality of Fenelon’s lovely falls, clearing brush, planting native species, opening vistas of the limestone gorge and the cascade. The best vantage point for the falls is on the southeast side of Colborne Street (see centre-fold map). Look for the large rock marker with an arrow and “FALLS” directing you down the steps to the water. In 2016, the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society helped install a collection of beautiful Butterfly Benches in the falls park area. The benches—in red and a special Parks-Canada green—were sculpted in metal by local artist Woody Farrow. Watch for lots of floral offerings throughout the village from the local Horticultural Society and Village Improvement Committee in 2017—and especially lots of red and white in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday. If you’re looking for the iconic “Fenelon” theatre sign that has long greeted visitors on Colborne Street, don’t worry. The building is now gone, unfortunately, the victim of mold and pigeons—but the sign will be back in due time. A citizens’ committee is refurbishing it for a new location in the future.

Our Rich Heritage The Kawartha region is steeped in Indigenous and settler history and there are many opportunities to discover the rich cultural heritage of the area. A good place to start is the Maryboro Lodge Museum, the historic home on Oak Street of village founder, James Wallis. It hosts a permanent exhibit on the environmental history of settlement, as well as the most comprehensive collection of artifacts in the Kawarthas. Immigrant settlement in Fenelon Township began in the early 1830s, by adventurous members of the English gentry. At that time Fenelon Falls was a cascade from a 20-foot ledge, and the adjacent sparsely treed oak grove resembled English parkland. While the landscape has changed, and industry has come and gone, some of the ancient Burr Oaks that stood on site for James Wallis (one is considered to be 380 years old) can still be visited today. All summer long, there are special events

and exhibits at the Museum (maryboro.ca). This year watch for a watercolour painting workshop in honour of local pioneer artist Anne Langton; a Retro-photographic exhibit, with reposed modern day scenes mirroring iconic historic photos; an exhibit showcasing a complete line of toys from Fenelon Falls’ largest employer, Allen Wood Products, who manufactured Tinkertoys, croquet sets, indoor bowling and many other familiar toys from the 1940s to the 1970s, and much more. While in a heritage mood, check out Fenelon’s antique furniture and curiosity shops downtown. Within a reasonable drive, there are excellent exhibits and programs about the history of local First Nations. Petroglyphs Provincial Park is a revered site of ancient Indigenous rock drawings and carvings. Lang Pioneer Village, near Peterborough, recently partnered with Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation for “living

history” demonstrations and exhibits. Both are just over an hour from Fenelon Falls. Curve Lake Cultural Centre and the Whetung Ojibway Centre are a little closer, featuring the work of aboriginal artists and artisans from across Canada. Curve Lake First Nation hosts an annual pow wow at the end of the summer (curvelakefirstnation. ca/tourism-and-culture/). If you are fascinated by some of our transportation history, be sure to visit
the Kirkfield or Peterborough Lift Locks, both of which were designed by Canadian engineer Richard Birdsall Rogers and built in the first years of the 20th century; quite a technological feat for the time, and in our harsh climate. Or visit the Fenelon Falls Station Gallery on Lindsay Street, which welcomed rail passengers until 1961. For an extensive list of heritage sites worth exploring nearby, see page 21.

Our Freshwater Bounty Trent-Severn Waterway
This is the year to get out on the water and enjoy all that the Trent Severn Waterway has to offer. In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, Parks Canada is offering free lockage on all historic canals for the entire 2017 navigation season. At 386kms in length, the Trent Severn Waterway is recognized as one of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world, welcoming over a million visitors a year. The canal system boasts two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks (Kirkfield, Peterborough) a marine railroad (Big Chute), and the highest point of fresh water elevation (Balsam Lake) from which you can circumnavigate the world by water. Lock 34, joining Cameron and Sturgeon Lakes, is one of the earliest locks to be built on the historic system, and a prominent feature of Fenelon Falls. Grab a frozen yogurt or Kawartha Dairy ice-cream cone from one of the local shops, and let the rhythm of climbing and descending water relax you for an hour—or two—of serious boat and people watching. Boaters are well served here with plenty of prime docking space and hydro and water
hookups. Restaurants, shops and services are all just a stroll away. There is a public boat launch at the north end of the dock. At the north end of Cameron Lake, Rosedale and Lock 35 provide the gateway to Balsam Lake, enjoyed for its clear water, numerous islands and bays, and Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Parks Canada offers “oTENTik” sites at Lock 35 in Rosedale (see Accommodations, p. 37). Dockside gas and boat rentals are also available in Rosedale. If you are vacationing in late June, you’ll want to catch the Fresh Water Summit Festival (see p. 13) in nearby Coboconk, which celebrates the importance of water as a natural resource and Balsam Lake’s official status as the highest lake from which you can reach all four oceans by boat. Don’t own a boat? Fenelon Falls Marina is the place to visit if the water is calling you. You’ll find a fine inventory of new and preowned watercraft, as well as expert service to all makes and models. A selection of boats and waverunners are also available for rent here. Buckeye Marine, with a fourgeneration history in nearby Bobcaygeon, is also worth the trip for a full range of watercraft and boating services, including custom upholstery.

Many choose to experience the beauty and history of the region from a houseboat. In fact, Kawartha Lakes is recognized as the Houseboat Capital of Ontario. With your own floating cottage, you get to sample sunrises and sunsets, a concert in one community, and the best butter tarts in the next. Fishing
World-class fishing is yours on Sturgeon, Cameron and the many other lakes in the region. The warm-water fishery consists of species such as Walleye, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Bullhead, Sucker, and Carp. Nearby Bobcaygeon hosts the annual Canada/US Walleye Tournament at the end of May (canadauswalleye.com), attracting anglers from far and wide. With free lockage this year on the Trent Canal system, you might sample several lakes and choose your favourite. Or try your luck dropping a line from the end of a dock.

Boating and Fishing Licences
If you wish to include boating or fishing in your vacation, you’ll need a licence for each. Fishing licences are available at any marina or bait shop. During Family Fishing Days in February and July, you can fish licence-free. Transport Canada now requires that you prove your boating competency by taking a boating-safety course, in person or online, passing the test and obtaining your Pleasure Craft Operator Card at the end of the course. Several bait, sports and marine outlets, including Fenelon Falls Marina, issue the card. The course itself is not difficult; if you need more extensive safety and operating-skill development, you should ask questions before you enroll to make sure you have the skills you need.

Santa Day/Nighttime Parade & Fireworks Every year, on the last Saturday of November, the entire village of Fenelon Falls is transformed into Santa’s workshop. There are family activities starting at 11 am throughout the downtown. Have a photo taken with Santa at his house, make magic reindeer food, or a sock puppet, enjoy a wagon ride, stop for a hot drink and a treat at numerous locations... and so much more. Globus Theatre at the LAB: The entertainment is exceptional; the setting sublime. The Lakeview Arts Barn (LAB) is a special place; a stately entertainment venue set in a former working barn in the countryside outside of Bobcaygeon. Originally modified in 1967, LAB enjoyed a thirty-year stint as a dance hall, before further renovation, in 2006 transformed it to the theatre and dining venue it is today. Importantly, it is home to the Globus Theatre; a talented company that delivers a rich summer season and theatrical offerings throughout the year. Lots of comedy with a dash of song describes the 2017 lineup. It’s all free, provided by the generosity of over 140 local supporters and participants. At dusk, visitors are treated to a festival of lights. Beginning at 5 pm, the parade rolls through the village, with dozens of illuminated floats and marching bands. A spectacular winter-time fireworks display concludes the event.

Parks and Gardens
The Fenelon Falls area is blessed with numerous parks and recreation areas for swimming, cycling, walking, winter and summer sports, and powered vehicle recreation. There are several community organizations—including the Horticultural Society, still going strong after 95+ years—that collaborate to improve and beautify parklands and various corners of town. Garnet Graham Park, at the beach (follow Bond or Francis streets to their western ends), features a sandy beach, playground equipment, beach-volleyball court, and idyllic picnic spots. (entrance at the Colborne Street bridge), on the south side of Lock 34, also offers picnic sites. Take a historic walk up the stone steps off Bond Street E. to St. James Park, an enchantingly quiet spot and the site of the original Anglican Church and cemetery. You’ll find pioneer graves and headstones and may recognize a few names of established families in the area.

Russ Baptiste Park, just behind the Funeral Home, is a good place to mingle with locals on most summer evenings, if you like to watch baseball. There’s a refreshment stand on site, and playground equipment to keep kids happy. Verulam Park, on Sturgeon Lake (Kawartha Lakes Road 30, east of Fenelon Falls) offers another swimming and picnic option, and access to Sturgeon Lake. A public boat dock and boat launch are available. Great sunsets too. West of Fenelon Falls, Birch Point Beach on Balsam Lake offers an additional swimming option. Take Kawartha Lakes Road 8 (Glenarm Road) west to Birch Point and go north until you reach the beach. Wildlife is in abundance in the varied

ecosystems of this area, but many creatures know how to hide from sight in our busy tourist season. Still, you might be lucky enough to spot a great blue heron, or an osprey, right off your dock or deck. Friends of the Osprey, a volunteer organization, has worked diligently over the past several years to ensure healthy habitat to keep the impressive birds coming back to nest in this area. Look up and you may see the giant nests, on natural or manmade platforms (friendsoftheosprey.org). A short drive away, Balsam Lake Provincial Park, off Highway 48 near Coboconk, offers excellent swimming, hiking, camping and picnic opportunities. Ken Reid Conservation Area, in addition to picnic and group camping facilities, interpretive trails, and an osprey nest observation area, features “Howlers Corners,” an off-leash dog area.

Fenelon Falls is the perfect access point for the Victoria Rail Trail, a scenic rail corridor running north to Kinmount or south to Lindsay. Heritage Sites
The trail is part of the vision for the Toronto Algonquin Greenway (TAG), a 400+ km hike, bike and paddle route embracing 30 communities from Toronto to Algonquin Park—and including Fenelon Falls. This Canada Day, TAG will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) from sea to sea to sea, including the Kawartha TCT (ktct.ca).
ATVing & Snowmobiling
The Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club and Kawartha ATV Association facilitate enjoyment of these two activities, along the rail trail and on other maintained trails. See their websites for information regarding trails and permits.
Cycling
Cycling is a great way to get up close and personal with the Kawarthas, either road cycling, or along the Victoria Rail Trail. During the summer months the bridge crossing the mouth of the canal above the locks is left permanently swung so boats can pass. Start at Garnet Graham Park to travel north towards Kinmount. To head towards Lindsay, start at the Fenelon Station Gallery.

The Kawartha Lakes Trading Post, on Highway 35 in Rosedale, combines shopping and dining experiences, so give yourself enough time for the excursion. The cozy family-style restaurant is licensed, and serves up homey food from fresh ingredients, like 100-percent-beef burgers, and pancakes with real, warm, maple syrup. There’s also a bakery and Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream bar, not to mention the large general store to explore. Sometimes there are line-ups at this popular seasonal spot (closed during the winter), but consider it part of the fun. Sunny Acres—This family-style campground on the north shore of Cameron Lake offers overnight campsites, seasonal trailer sites and housekeeping cottages. It has been family owned and operated since 1949. Along with a few other amenities, rental fishing boats, canoes, kayaks and pedal boats are available on site. Pets are welcome if kept on a leash, and there is a swimming beach for dogs. Shorelea Cottages—The living is easy on beautiful Balsam Lake. At Shorelea Cottages, operated by Gail and Grant Cottrell, all units come with a gas barbecue, satellite television, shower or tub, electric heat, fully equipped kitchen, pillows and blankets (guests bring sheets and towels), and docking facilities. In July and August, bookings are from Saturday to Saturday. Take advantage of low-season rates during spring and fall.
Sandy Beach Resort—Another excellent option on popular Balsam Lake is the Sandy Beach Resort, family run by the Henderson Family since 1940. The spacious 40-acre resort (with three playgrounds) offers housekeeping cottages, seasonal trailer sites, and overnight RV sites. There are fishing boats, canoes and kayaks available for rent. A small store on site will keep you supplied with staples, treats, and wood. Bobcaygeon (Est. 1832): Situated on three islands between Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes boasts small-town charm and a vibrant downtown on the historic Trent-Severn Waterway. There’s no end of shopping, dining, fishing, boating, antiquing and cultural activities. Bigley Shoes and Clothing has become a renowned destination for serious shoppers. Burnt River (Est. 1830s): With a population of 250 and no commercial district, Burnt River may not be on your radar as a destination. However, if you have a canoe, bike, snowmobile, fishing rod, or ATV, you may not want to miss it. From this tiny hamlet with its unique history you can access the Burnt River (a popular canoe route), the Victoria Rail Trail (85 kms of flat, scenic trail that runs between Lindsay and Kinmount) and Four Mile Lake (with its public beach and boat launch off of Hillside Dr.)

Cameron (believed site of 1613 battle between First Nations and Samuel de Champlain): This quiet country village is located to the west of Sturgeon Lake, on Hwy 35 at CKL Rd 34, nestled amidst rolling green fields. Watch for roadside stands where farmers offer naturally-raised beef, produce and home-baked goods. Cameron is best known for its recreational fishing, accessed through the hamlet of Long Beach on Sturgeon Lake. Coboconk (Est. 1851): Though small—with a population of 800—Coboconk has long been a centre of commerce and bustle. In the 1800s and early 1900s it was active in the lumber, limestone and brick-making industries of central Ontario; while later, with the building of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it became a hub for summer tourist and cottager activity. Known to the cognoscenti as “Coby”, it hosts the annual Fresh Water Summit and the Coboconk Duck Derby. In town, you’ll find “Canada’s smallest jail” while a short drive southwest will take you to Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Kinmount (Est ~1850s): The landscape is different in Kinmount. The deep, dark woods and looming, rocky hills of the Canadian Shield surround this tiny village. First home to the Huron, settlers from the United Kingdom arrived in the 1850s, followed later in 1874, by a large group of Icelandic railway workers. This group, identified as one of the first Icelandic settlements in Canada, met ill
fortune due to poor health standards in their work camp. Today, this small tourist village with its rich history is eclectic in spirit and interest. After touring its beautiful sawmill, railway station and artisan shops, visit the Highland Cinema to discover a mesmerizing labyrinth of Hollywood paraphernalia. Looking for solitude? Visit the Dharma Centre, 400-acre mediation retreat in the hills southeast of town. Kirkfield (Est. 1864): Tiny Kirkfield has two big attractions. For history buffs and boaters, there’s the Kirkfield Lift Lock. Situated at Lock 36 of the Trent-Severn Waterway, it’s the second highest hydraulic lift lock in the world (lifting boats 15 m) and is designated as being at the highest elevation on the water route. For birders and nature buffs, there’s Carden Alvar Provincial Park. One of province’s newest parks, it has been identified as a globally rare ecosystem. Public access is limited to two secured hiking trails due to its extremely sensitive habitat. Parking and washrooms are available at the trailhead. Lindsay (Inc. 1859): Lindsay, one of the larger commercial centres in the Kawarthas, features a historic downtown, a mall and large retail outlets. The town was first settled by an American family, the Purdys, who built a dam on the Scugog River in 1827, followed by a sawmill and gristmill around which the community grew. At first, Lindsay – named after the surveyor’s assistant who died accidentally while plotting its streets and lots—was a lumber and farming hub. After the introduction of the railway, it became a manufacturing centre for over a hundred years. Today, its economic focus is agriculture and tourism. Spend a day exploring Lindsay’s downtown boutiques, strolling the walking trails that follow the Scugog River, and step back in time at the Olde Gaol Museum.

Norland (Est. 1862): As you drive towards Norland, you can’t help but notice a change in the landscape; from rolling hills, farms and woods, to the dark coniferous forests and steep granite outcrops of the Canadian Shield. You’ve entered “The Land Between”; a unique transitional area containing features of the two ecosystems it borders. Norland is situated on the pristine Gull River and offers boating, canoeing and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Its public access beach can be found at #74 Shadow Lake Rd 3, off Hwy 35, south of the village. Rosedale (Est. ~1873): South of Coboconk, Rosedale’s Lock 35 is popular stop for TrentSevern boaters and bird watchers. You can also try “glamping” at one of Parks Canada o-TENTik sites available there. Call 1-877737-3783 for details. Sturgeon Point (Inc. 1899): A short drive west of Bobcaygeon, scenic Sturgeon Point has been a beloved summer vacation destination for over 150 years. Steeped in history, this tiny hamlet features excellent swimming at its public beach, basketball at its wooded park, and great fishing at the government wharf. with exciting landscapes, parks, docking, shopping and special events all year long. The Fenelon Falls Chamber hosts the area’s most popular Country Living Show April 28 - 30. On the first of July we celebrate Canada at our beachfront with fun and games, a concert, and fireworks. We celebrate Midnight Madness throughout the shopping district with entertainment and shopper specials at every store. Fenelon Falls also sparkles because of its many attractions. We have more than 750 feet of docking at the Lock 34 with hydro and water available. Throughout summer and fall our merchants host events to make the village a fun place to visit and to shop. When autumn fades into winter we prepare for the festive season with Santa
Day, the last Saturday in November. This is possibly the largest celebration of Santa in all of Canada. It is a free all-day celebration for children with Santa’s workshop, petting zoo, rides, free snacks, cookie-making, face painting and countless other activities culminating with the Santa Claus parade and fireworks presentation. A park system branches out from the Trent Severn locks to our beaches along the shores of Cameron Lake. The Lock 34 Park extends above the locks for picnics and below the locks for exciting views of the falls and you can cast your line in to catch pickerel or bass or muskie. We have many miles of trails along the old rail tracks that link us to Kinmount and Lindsay. The trails are open year round with summer ATV’s, bicycles, hikers and winter snowmobiles.
