OVER THE BACK FENCE

I read with interest the recent announcement that the federal government, through one of its many grant programs, is handing $12 million over to Loblaws so they can install new energy efficient refrigerators and coolers in their stores across the country. Say what?? Loblaws is a multi-million dollar corporation, reporting profits last year of about $800 million. Galen Weston, who owns Loblaws, is worth $8.8 billion. Can they not afford to do this, and more, without a handout? Oh, sorry, I guess because of the money Loblaws had to rebate to the thousands of people who overpaid for bread in last year’s price fixing scandal, it has left them a little shy on their cashflow. If the government took that $12 million and spread it over the hundreds of small businesses who need a hand up, our economy would be in so much better shape. On another rantable subject, the Ontario government brought down

BUILD YOUR TRUST AROUND US.

their budget on April 11. Included in the budget was $11.2 billion for rapid transit in the GTA. When will politicians, many of whom have never lived in a small, rural town, realize the importance of rural transit systems, including increased GO service to our area? Premier Ford claims his government is “for the people.” I think “the people” to whom he is referring are those who live in big cities with no concept whatsoever about the needs of “the little people”. I hate to say I told you so, but I did.

WHERE NOT TO PUT THE SNOW

I walked past by one of the better fishing spots in Bobcaygeon, now owned by my friend, a veteran and found myself facing the Cenotaph as a tribute to him. But my puppy kept leaping on the huge snow pile blocking the front of the Cenotaph and it occurred to me, why would the CKL pile up the snow and block the front of this symbolic place? The excess snow could be pushed further or piled beside it in the open park. The sidewalk snow cleaner could clear the two metres to the front of the Cenotaph. I know I can look over the pile of snow and don’t have to stand right next to the front of the Cenotaph, but it’s a symbolic place for remembrance. It seems we pay lip service to our vets, spending more effort celebrating groundhog day than Nov 11. The Cenotaph wasn’t built to remember our “heroes” only one day a year. I admit, I hadn’t thought about this before until I stopped to pay my respect to those that made the ultimate price and my friend, a true “hero”. Saved by spring, I hope CKL changes its snow removal next winter. L.Matsumoto, Bobcaygeon

Helping you is what we do!

It is my personal opinion but, I am sure it is shared by Canadians coast to coast to coast that the carbon tax is another smoke screen in the process to fill government coffers. The hated tax, after being collected, will go into general revenue and never be seen again or, at least, never labelled correctly. Remember the tire tax? Yes, the surreptitious manipulation of the rip-off was never used for the proposed recycling of worn tires. It went into general revenue. This government seems to lack the veracity and transparency that is always promised at election time. Any faith voters had in Liberal government has been stretched to the limit like an elastic band and, I believe, is about to break and snap back into the face of those pulling those “stretchers”. We are near the top of the list of the highest taxed people on the face of this planet. It has to ease up or, preferably, stop soon. J. R. Baldwin, Omemee

GRANT HELP APPRECIATED

The Royal Canadian Legion would like to take this opportunity to thank the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund for our recent grant towards audio and visual installation for our Banquet Hall. This grant allowed us to install state-of-the-art equipment such as new speakers in the ceiling, microphones, projector and screen as well as amplifiers and receivers. Installation will be competed in April. Those who rent our facility for Celebrations of Life, Weddings, Banquets and meeting/seminars will now have the advantage of using our equipment instead of renting from an outside company. Legion events will also be enhanced with the use of this equipment. We are planning an Open House June 6 to commemorate D-Day Normandy and are hosting a free lunch for all veterans, a 17-piece swing band will be in our Banquet hall, a Military Display, a Legion Ceremony outside and food. We will be able to use all our new equipment at this event and many others.

The Kindergartens of B.P.S. led their school in a fundraiser to bring awareness to Down Syndrome. On March 21, our school wore blue and yellow and funky socks. We set a goal of $321 to represent World Down Syndrome Day. With the hard work and dedication of our Kindergartens, selling tickets to guess how many gumballs in a jar, making bead bracelets and doing a quarter drive, not only did we reach our goal but surpassed it! We raised $894.25 to be donated to the Down Syndrome Association of Peterborough. At B.P.S WE ROCK OUR SOCKS and WE SEE THE ABILITY! Submitted by Adam R. Blacklock

The Legion continues our mission to serve veterans and the community. Our bond with the community has been enhanced recently so the Legion wants to extend an invitation to attend our D-Day Event Open House. The C.H.E.S.T. Fund is there for the community and we can’t thank them enough for supporting the Bobcaygeon Royal Canadian Legion. We also need the community to continue to support us and call us to see how the we can support the community even more. Margaret Cameron, Past President, Bobcaygeon

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

By April Scott

The Choristers are pleased that the snowbirds are almost all home and learning the new music. It is great to see Graham Keevill recovered and back in the bass section. Vivian is also back in full form once again and keeping us on the straight and narrow tinkling the ivories on the Grand piano. Plans are coming together for our Spring concert but a date has yet to be determined. We can promise an exciting program with numbers from Broadway to Beatles and much more. We were practicing one last night that we are going to dedicate to the winter of

2019! Very appropriate. We are pleased that our guest will be Patrick Manahan who is returning after a previous concert. Playing the saxophone, he will be a pleasure to listen to and maybe he will be accompanying the chorus also. We are all tired of the recent weather but hopefully by the time you read this the sun will be shining and all memories of winter have disappeared. The birds are all flying back and you can hear them singing in the trees. Why not think about singing with us for our next concert! It is a great lifter-upper! We wish everyone a Happy Easter and will talk to you next time.

Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation

NANABOZHO AND ANINAATIG (MAPLE TREES) As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka

The Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg had many stories surrounding this time of year, which is the time of collecting sap from ANINAATIG (the maple trees). This activity has been going on with Nishnaabeg for a long, long time, beyond memory. There are many stories that came out of the art of working with the gifts of ANINAATIG. Some of these stories are born out of this human/spirit called Nanabozho. Nanabozho is a legendary figure amongst our people and is recognized as the one who helped Nishnaabe with many of the gifts that we now use to make life easier. For example, it was Nanabozho who gave the colours of this world as you see them today, when once upon a time this world was all gray. Nanabozho did this to keep everyone happy. So we give much credence to that being for these kind of gifts that we have. But, Nanabozho was also responsible for the gifting of the activity surrounding the collecting of sap and then ultimately making it into sugar.

Have you heard BOB lately? BOB listened to you!

One day, Nanabozho saw a number of Nishnaabe laying on the ground. They had somehow discovered that the dripping off trees was sweet. And actually it was more syrupy than you have today. Our people were lying there drinking this and not doing any of their jobs -- not getting wood for the fire, not hunting and feeding their kids, and not washing their clothes in the creek. They were just lying under these trees enjoying the free food. And they were getting lazy and fat. So Nanabozho said, “What are you doing?” And they said, “We are enjoying this, we just found this. A little squirrel came along and showed us how to do this. He bit the bark off the branch and down came this liquid. And it’s thick.” In those days sap was already made into syrup inside the tree. So because it made the Nishnaabe lazy, Nanabozho started to worry about them, that they were getting into a state where they were not looking after themselves. So Nanabozho went down to the creek and got a pail of water and then climbed to the top of ANINAATIG, cut a branch off, made it into a funnel and poured water down it. Nanabozho diluted the syrup into a liquid that wouldn’t contain so much sweetness and so it would not satisfy the Nishnaabe to the extent that they would lay around and just do that all day. Nanabozho diluted the sap to the point where it is today and this is what we find coming out of the maple tree (diluted syrup actually), and now Nishnaabe has to work for everything. Nishnaabe now has to boil everything down to make it into the syrup it used to be and ultimately then from syrup into sugar. Nanabozho did this out of his worry for the longterm existence of Nishnaabe and also decided to show them a lesson. Now, we ourselves in the modern context, wonder about how Nishnaabe boiled the sap down to syrup and then syrup down to sugar, when they did not have metal…but that is another story.

INTRODUCTION TO ANISHINAABEMOWIN

By Glenna Burns

The United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages. This declaration was made because ‘Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation.’ Truth and Reconciliation Community Bobcaygeon is presenting an Introduction to Anishinaabemowin (speaking the native language), free to all at the Bobcaygeon Library on Saturday, May 4 at 10:30am. The presenter of this session will be DJ Fife, a young Curve Lake First Nations man who loves travelling by foot or canoe on the lands of his ancestors. That love of the land is reflected in DJ Fife’s work as warden at the Petroglyphs Provincial Park (Kinoomaagewaabikong). DJ Fife will share his own story as to how he learned his language with the help of his grandparents. He will also share a primer on the Anishinaabemowin language and introduce some basic vocabulary. Words like Aanii (hello), Boozhoo (greetings), Miigwech (Thank you), Ziisbakdoke Giizis (April – Maple Sugar Moon) are enriching for any lover of language and reconciliation. Nishin Aasagaabwiiteadying… It’s good to support each other.

EASTER’S MANY FACES

By Kirk Winter

Easter 2019 occurs on Sunday, April 21 this year in Canada. Easter, Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday are considered “movable feasts” in western Christianity which utilizes the Gregorian calendar. Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, so depending upon the length of winter, the holiday can be celebrated with a foot of snow on the ground or with a backyard barbeque. Eastern Orthodox Christianity, largely based in Russia, Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria, utilize the Julian calendar and their Easter can fall anywhere between April 4 and May 8 each year. For some Protestant Christians, Easter Sunday begins the season of Eastertide, which ends on the 50th day after Easter with Pentecost Sunday.

Eastern Orthodox Christians use Easter Sunday as the beginning of Pascha, or Greek for Easter, and this season lasts 40 days and ends with the Feast of the Ascension. According to The History Channel, “despite the importance of Easter as a Christian holiday many of its traditions and symbols have deep roots in the pagan celebrations of the goddess Eostre or Ostara who was the ancient Germanic goddess of spring, and the Jewish holiday of Passover.” The Jewish celebration of Passover occurs at the same time as Easter and traditions have been borrowed from one to the other. This includes the serving of lamb which began as a Passover tradition and is now commonplace particularly among Eastern Orthodox Christians. Easter traditions are very strong within Catholicism and Protestantism, and the Lent/Easter/Pentecost season can stretch to over 80 days worth of reflection and celebration. For many adherents, the Easter season is as important, if not more important, than Christmas. The History Channel continues by stating that, “Irrespective of denomination, there are many Easter-time traditions with roots that can be traced back to non-Christian and even pagan or non-religious celebrations. Many non-Christians choose to observe these traditions while essentially ignoring the religious aspects of the celebration.”

Horoscopes

April 18 to May 1

Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) “Music brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing mind and muscle from their endless wintering.” ~ Haruki Murakami. Aquarius, it has been proven that making music as we age – especially singing in a choir with others – brings health benefits by improving memory, mood and even physical function. So, what are you waiting for? Join a choir now! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Detach yourself from the habit of taking things personally. Try to think how the other person is thinking. Chances are this person’s thoughts and feelings have really nothing to do with you, Pisces. Aries (March 21 to April 20) The full pink moon on April 19 promises a new phase, Aries, brimming with life and waiting to be explored. The name comes from pink flowers that bloom in the early spring, known as ground phlox. It usually marks the time of Easter and Passover – a time of renewal and hope. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) It may only be the beginning of Spring, Taurus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead! Start thinking about that lovely summer vacation – it may de-stress you now. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) When the weather turns warm and nature starts to show off its beauty, it’s often a time that makes people want to grow, as well. So, Gemini, it’s a good occasion to take stock of your goals and move ahead accordingly. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Your hobbies – past and present – are excellent gifts to yourself, Cancer. Take pride in them, as you would a work project. And don’t rush – quality before quantity. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) You’ve experienced a bit of a break from responsibilities lately, Leo, but now it’s time to get back into the thick of things. You can do this!

3. Review tips on emergency preparedness at kawarthalakes.ca/flood. Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit.

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Everyone needs balance in life. Be sure to make space, Virgo, for every part – love, family, friends, work, play, relaxation. They all make up the “whole” of you, so treat each one with the same respect.

Reminder: Property owners in flood plain areas are responsible to redirect water from their properties as needed. Please secure your own sand bag supplies early from your local hardware store. The municipality will provide supplies for making sandbags during widespread flooding emergencies at select locations. See kawarthalakes.ca/flood for regularly updated information.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Could a Spring love be in the Spring air for you, Libra? We believe it’s quite possible! Take a deep breath and away you go! Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) The squeaky wheel gets the oil, Scorpio, as the saying goes. But we sometimes need to be aware of what the consequences of “getting the oil” really are – and are they worth the trouble? Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) The stars are planning a move for you, Sagittarius. That’s right, don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a new place of lodging in the coming days – an improvement, no less. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Dear Capricorn, your health is causing some concern – get the proper help you need, because it is affecting your emotional well-being as well as the physical. We can’t let this happen!

I was in line the other day at a local hardware store listening to the people ahead of me bemoaning city living. As someone who never spent a day of his life in a community of less than 100,000 people before arriving in the Kawarthas in 1984, you couldn’t pay me to return to the GTA, or Calgary, or Vancouver or any other large urban centre where I spent my formative years growing up. While I agreed with everything the couple in front of me was sharing, instead of running away from something, I would rather like to share with you some of the advantages of living in a small town. The people: If you are prepared to put in the effort and become part of the community, you will meet some of the finest people you could imagine. Becoming part of the community means to leave the town better than

you found it. The people you will meet and the friends you make will make the effort well worth it. Cost of living: While it is true that the real estate market in the City of Kawartha Lakes is driven and influenced by the GTA, it is also very true that you can still purchase the same property in the Kawarthas for less than half of what you might pay for it in the GTA. Business/Professional relationships: In a small community, I believe you can develop relationships with your doctor, dentist, lawyer and skilled tradesmen that would not be possible in a larger community. In a small community they value your patronage as much as you value their multi-facetted skill sets. My 10-minute commute: At no time in my career did I have to drive more than 20 minutes to work. My heart goes out to the thousands of people who do the 35/115 commute to the 401 and Metro every day. Nothing is far away in Lindsay. You can walk, bus, or drive almost anywhere in minutes. If you can’t find what you need somewhere on Kent Street likely you don’t need it. GET UP AND BOOGIE FOR A CAUSE

Submitted by Doug Saunders

The Enforcers and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton are holding a spring dance April 27, at the Armoury in Lindsay. For the 10th year, the band is supporting the efforts of the local organization that provides mentorship programs for area kids in need of the guidance that results from solid partnerships with adults. The Enforcers and The Bigs give deep thanks to the tremendous response from local businesses in the form of sponsorships and door prizes that make the evening possible and exciting for those attending. Over the years, the event has developed a large following and people love to return for what they

know will be an exceptionally good time. For those attending for the first time, get ready for a night of great music and fun. The music is a mix of familiar songs from the decades and includes blues, boogie, R&B, Motown, Reggae and a dash of country. If you love to dance, the floor fills up from the first notes played until last call. If you enjoy simply listening, Ron Lister provides an amazing sound/light system and brings his professional mixing talents along to please your ears. Food will be available for purchase from Sugar and Spice. Doors open on this age of majority event at 8pm and the dance goes until around 1am. Tickets are $15 each and are available from The Bigs (705-324-6800) at A Buy and Sell Shop and Boiling Over Coffee Vault, as well as at the door.

SHORTBREAD... NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS

Cut out this ad for a free gift.

Karen moved to Fenelon Falls from a small village in England in June 2007, bringing with her a love of baking and cooking, together with her recipes for shortbread and other baked goods. In October 2010, Karen met Ross, a genuine ‘Fenelonite’, who introduced Karen to butter tarts! In 2013 Karen and Ross put their baked goods to the test at the LEX Christmas Craft Show. With huge success, the idea of Kawartha Shortbread was born! Today, Kawartha Shortbread's butter tarts continue to win awards. In 2016, they came home from the Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off in Peterborough with a 1st for their Maple Pecan Butter Tart and 3rd with their Coconut Butter Tart. In September 2017, they proudly took 1st place in the ‘Best of the Best’ category at the Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Taste-Off, defeating all previous 1st place winners. With these and other awards, customer support, encouragement from family and friends, together with determination, the inspiration to expand Kawartha Shortbread to a full-time café/bakery became a reality. They will be opening their new shop at 41 Lindsay Street, Fenelon Falls (Previously LP Outfitters). Follow them on social media for their opening date and grand opening! Welcome to their dream come true!

CHEATERS NEVER WIN

From our friends at H&R Block

Have you ever cheated on your taxes? Chances are you know someone who has. A Leger survey conducted for H&R Block Canada found that one in five Canadians knows a tax cheat. However, almost half of the people surveyed (47 percent) said they would not report the tax evasion to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). There are serious consequences for filing a tax return you know is wrong. Here are some ways to avoid attracting attention from the CRA: Report all your income: The CRA receives copies of all the T slips issued, so if you forget, misplace or hide a T slip, it will inevitably be uncovered by their matching program and result in a reassessment. Do this twice in a four-year period and you will be looking at substantial penalties. Claim credits correctly: There are some credits that are more likely to be reviewed than others by the CRA. Moving expenses are commonly reviewed. However, if you are asked to supply your receipts, you should not be concerned as long as you claimed everything

BCH TAX INC. 9 Francis Street West Rear Fenelon Falls Tel: (705) 887-0267 Fax: (705) 887-0268

correctly. Same with the tuition transfer. As long as you have the signed T2202A Form from the student doing the transferring, you have nothing to worry about. Be realistic with expenses: Claiming higher than usual expenses is asking for trouble. For obvious reasons, the CRA does not publicize what the amounts are that will automatically trigger a review. However, if you are claiming to use your vehicle 95 percent for business use, we would expect that they will want to see your log book. Live within your means: If you are living large on a limited income, it will raise eyebrows. The CRA may conduct a net worth assessment and you will then have to explain the discrepancy. If you have undisclosed income, you may want to come clean under their Voluntary Disclosure Program. Net worth assessments often result from information provided to the CRA on their snitch line. Ensure your business doesn’t look like a hobby: The CRA does not expect every new enterprise to make a profit their first few years in business. However, you cannot operate a business for the purpose of creating losses. There must be some reasonable expectation of profit in future years. If you claim year after year of losses, you may be answering questions about your business plan from a CRA auditor. Unfortunately, if the CRA finds that you have cheated once, you can be sure that you will remain on their radar. On the other hand, if they conduct a random review and you pass they will be more likely in the future to commit their resources elsewhere.

SOME TAX FAQS

As we wind down tax time, we checked out a few FAQs from the Canada Revenue Agency website. If I receive a tax refund, is my return approved? The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will process your return and send you a refund fairly promptly. However, the CRA also has three years in which to review returns and request follow up paperwork. I earned less than $10,000 so I do not have to file a tax return? Even if you earned no income, you could be entitled to other credits and benefits that are triggered once you file a tax return. Are my pets considered my dependents? It depends on if your pet is actually working. Most pets will not qualify. However, there are the odd exceptions. A farmer was once allowed to claim cat and dog food because they were outdoor pets that were acquired to keep wildlife away from their blueberries. Are tips considered income? For servers, tips may be as much as 200 to 400 percent of their income. Servers and others working in the hospitality industry are required to record and report all their tips on their tax return. Do I need to worry about slips mailed to me at the wrong address? You are required to report all sources of income in the year it was earned. The CRA receives copies of all the T slips issued, so if you forget, misplace or hide a T slip, it will inevitably be uncovered by their matching program and result in a reassessment. If this happens twice in a four-year period, you will face a stiff penalty.

Are you eligible for pension $plitting? Split your income and save even more on your taxes. Did you know that transferring your pension income to a spouse or common-law partner can increase your tax savings? For more information, speak to an H&R Block Tax Professional today.

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE sponsored by Stewart Morrison Insurance

WATER DAMAGE COVERAGE? HERE ARE THE BASICS. What is Overland Water Protection? Overland water, or frequently called overland flooding, is the accumulation of water on usually dry land during heavy rainfall, spring thaw, or when freshwater rivers or lakes spill their banks. Overland water coverage was created to protect against damages caused by this water entering your home through a point at or above ground surface, such as doors and windows. You may think that if you live on the higher ground you may not need Overland Water Protec-tion; but in the event of sever weather, such as a heavy snow load coupled by rapid melting, could cause devastating damage. Overland Water will cover damage to your home, personal belongings and help with additional living expense should you have to temporarily relocate. FACT: Flooding accounts for 40% of Canada’s natural disasters - less than 15% of homeowners have overland water coverage. What is Ground Water Protection? An optional coverage for damage caused by water entering your through your foundation, basement floors or walls, suddenly and accidentally from underground water sources. What is Sewer Backup Coverage? Coverage in the event water or sewage backs up from the sewer, septic, sump or drain within your home. However this coverage will not protect you for damages should sewer back up occur as a result of an Overland Water event. What is Service Line Coverage? This protection extends coverage to repair and replace your water service lines and/or sewer line due to a loss resulting from a leak, break, tear, rupture or collapse of the line. This coverage includes excavation costs. Is it important to have all water coverages? Ideally, yes! They all work together to insure that your home and your belongings are protected from the increased risk of water related threats.

Submitted by Michelle Shanahan

A group of fellow cleaning company owners have gotten together and have set up a big “Spring Clean” day at the Ronald McDonald Charity House in Hamilton. This facility is used by many families in the Kawartha Lakes. Clean-up will be on May 25 from 8am to 4pm, with a possible second date of May 26 if it is needed. River Rose Cleaning Service of Dunsford is one of the five companies to spearhead this, which has now grown to include more than 20 companies. The group will be cleaning the two kitchens, gym, movie theatre, games rooms, play rooms including window cleaning, grout and tile, carpet, etc. We are bringing our own cleaning supplies and

YOUR HEARING IN GRAPHIC TERMS

In order to quantify and treat hearing loss, it is necessary to conduct a hearing test, the results of which are graphically represented on an “audiogram.” The audiogram illustrates hearing ability by showing the listener’s hearing threshold at various frequencies. Hearing threshold indicates how quiet a sound may be before it is inaudible. A hearing threshold of between 0 and 25 dB is considered normal. The vertical axis of the audiogram represents sound volume or intensity, which is measured in decibels (dB). The more one moves down the axis, the louder the sound becomes. The horizontal axis of the audiogram represents sound frequency or pitch measured in Hertz (Hz). An audiogram serves as the basis for a hearing-instrument fitting. Once a hearing test has discovered that a hearing impairment exists, the next step is finding the perfect match between the patient and his or her individual impairment. At this point, a doctor of audiology will take into consideration all of the many factors that can affect the successful treatment of hearing loss. Let us do what we do best—call on LINDSAY EAR CLINIC for comprehensive testing, experienced evaluations, custom fittings, quality hearing products, and follow-up care. P.S. According to the study mentioned, although aspirin P.S. An audiogram with a saucer-shaped slope indicates that hearing is better on the lower and higher ends of the frequency range than in the middle.

It also brought many smiles and big “Thank You’s” from residents and staff of the homeless shelter in Lindsay.
