OVER THE BACK FENCE

Who would have thought in March that we’d still be at home six weeks later? Many of us are lucky that we can work from home so we can manage our “physical distancing.” But there are hundreds of people who don’t have that luxury. Many of them, in fact, put their lives at risk every day to help others, whether it’s the staff at hospitals and nursing homes including janitors, nurses, doctors, PSWs and others, emergency personnel like police officers, paramedics and firefighters, our municipal workers who pick up curbside or at our transfer stations, and those who work in our grocery stores and pharmacies. Thank you to all of them, we are, at this moment, flattening the curve in Canada and on the right side of recovery. But that said, we cannot rest on our laurels, folks. This has worked because we have stayed home, maintained our social distancing and, yes, washed our hands a lot! Others around the world have relaxed their emergency measures

and are paying the price of a second wave of the virus. So we need to listen to the experts and government officials and stay the course. We need to ensure our safety and the health of those around us. If there’s one thing that’s come out of all this, it’s that many have had a chance to re-evaluate their priorities. It’s the time we’re able to spend with loved ones that’s important. I met a woman at the transfer station yesterday who was with her husband. She mentioned that it was a different “date.” I told her she was lucky to have someone by her side at this time, not matter how much he may be getting on her nerves! Our lives look different and will when we come out the other side of this. But let’s look forward, not back, and learn from it. Let’s continue to check on each other, support our communities and neighbours and be kind. We’ve made it this far, let’s not let our guard down yet. Stay well, stay safe and, yes, wash your hands!

COMMUNITIES STEP UP

By Deb Crossen

One of the reasons John and I moved to Buckhorn was the sense of community we had been missing in Toronto. Many things have happened in the 20 years since we made the move and I continue to be impressed and proud of how people come together and support one another. Submitted by Walter Murray I have lived in wonderful Bobcaygeon for the last It has certainly been accentuated during this 20 years and believe Bobcaygeon will rise again after COVID-19 crisis. We have seen convoys of cars in salute to our healthcare workers and others at Pinecrest the ravages of Coronavirus. It will become vital again for us who live here and Nursing Home, neighbours standing apart but singing for the thousands of tourists and summer citizens who from their porches and front yards to thank those who are working through this, volunteers delivering food and come each year. medications to those who can’t go out right now, local businesses donating funds and retooling their businesses to help get needed equipment and supplies to those on the front lines and groups – quilters, sewers, knitters – coming together to make masks for hospitals and nursing The other night, Fear, as I lay sleeping homes. This has given me an overwhelming sense that I dreamt you held me in your arms. our communities will come out of this stronger and When I awoke, Fear, I was mistaken: more together than ever before. BOBCAYGEON WILL RISE AGAIN

You are our nightmare, Coronavirus. You make us weary; your name is Fear. You’ll never know, Fear, how much you scar us as you steal the ones we hold dear. You knocked us down, Fear, here in Bobcaygeon: We wash our hands a special way. If you should leave us, but touch another, it is still for us a sad day. You are our nightmare, Coronavaris. Yet you inspire acts of care. Our faithful folk find new ways of sharing, as a breath of Spring in the air.. You are our sunshine, creative stories that force down Fear with gratitude. Those who face Coronavirus somehow manage to change our mood. These are our doctors and front-line workers who face you, Virus, throughout long days. We thank our grocers, drivers and pastors; all who meet our needs many ways. It is these stories that live forever: Pinecrest’s Lorraine* is one of these. There, with the Virus, she’s knitting mittens for our Trinity Christmas trees. These are our sunshine, our storied people who conquer Fear with our song’s refrain. We hope they know now, how much we love them. “Our Bobcaygeon will rise again.” *Lorraine Button, in her nineties, lives in Pinecrest Nursing Home Words: Walter Murray Music; You Are My Sunshine Trinity United Church, Bobcaygeon, April, 2020 4

KAWARTHA LAKES 2020 MASK CHALLENGE

Submitted by Sandra Clements

The Kawartha Covid19 Response Team, a local volunteer group formed to help get PPE into the community, have set a challenge of making 2020 masks in 20 days throughout the Kawartha Lakes. They are receiving requests for these masks on a daily basis. If you make them, they can pick up and distribute to the groups who are requesting them. If you can help but need supplies, they can help with that, too. #conquercovid #kawarthastrong #wegotthis #2020challenge #masksforeveryone #community. If you are sewing and already handing out to friends and neighbours, please send her your count to be added to the tally. Please email Sandra Clements at sclements@bell.net or call her at 705-344-6592 if you are able to help, have masks ready for pick up or your community group or essential service requires masks.

TRENT LAKES OUTREACH UPDATE

By Peter Raymond, Chair, Trent Lakes Outreach Centre

I am please to announce that Trent Lakes Outreach Centre has launched a website. We operate a year round Foodbank once a month. The Foodbank is run entirely by volunteers and donations. Our move to Lakehurst Hall has been put on hold due to COVID-19 Global Pandemic, so Trent Lakes Municipality advised that we should continue to operate from the trailer at the Deer Bay School property in Buckhorn until further notice. We very much appreciate continued support from Trent Lakes staff & council. We have been able to confirm with Kawartha Food Share that we will be able to operate Foodbank on April 27. We do request that any new client gives a few days notice ahead of the scheduled date of Foodbank. Also note, all clients and volunteers adhere to our COVID-19 process to keep everyone safe.

of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. “I understand the actions we are taking are affecting the lives and livelihoods of people across the province, but these are extraordinary times and we need to do whatever we can to keep individuals and families safe and stop the spread of this terrible virus,” said Premier Ford. “We all must continue to do our part by staying home and practicing physical distancing. With the proper precautions and additional measures we’re taking today, I am confident we will get through this together and stronger.” This means that we are prohibited from gatherings of more than five people, bars and restaurants will remain closed, and current electricity pricing will stay in place. For a full list of extended emergency orders, visit https://www.ontario.ca/page/emergency-information.

BIKEFEST CANCELLED

Bikefest is ranked as one of the top 5 Motorcycle festivals in Canada. It is a day to Ride, Relax and Return to Bobcaygeon to see friends. On Facebook, organizers had this to say, “It is with great reluctance that we have made the decision to cancel the event this year. While we are hopeful that the Coronavirus Pandemic will be history in 2 months, we are unable to make the necessary arrangements to guarantee a successful and safe event. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. We shall return in June 2021 with a bigger and better Bobcaygeon Bikefest.”

EMERGENCY ORDERS EXTENDED UNTIL APRIL 23

To help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of people across the province, the Ontario government has extended all emergency orders that have been put in place to-date under s.7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act until April 23, 2020, including the closure of outdoor amenities in parks and recreational areas, non-essential workplaces, public places and bars and restaurants, along with restrictions on social gatherings and the prohibition of price gouging. In addition, new measures have been introduced to address surge capacity in retirement homes, restrict recreational camping on Crown land, and allow the repurposing of existing buildings and temporary structures. All of these actions are based on the advice

AUTO INSURANCE REBATES

For those who have significantly reduced their driving habits, the Ontario government is enabling auto insurance companies to provide temporary insurance premium rebates to drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The province has amended a regulation under the Insurance Act to help ease the financial pressure on working people and families during this public health crisis. By amending this regulation insurance companies would be able to provide auto insurance premium rebates to consumers for up to 12 months after the declared emergency has ended. “We are in an unprecedented time and people

are experiencing extraordinary financial pressures,” said Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance. “My message to insurance companies has been clear: they should provide relief that reflects the financial hardships their dedicated customers are facing due to the COVID-19 outbreak.” “All of us will remember how companies treat us during these unprecedented times. I often remind business leaders that their customers from the past five years are likely to be their customers for the next five years,” said Phillips. “Insurance companies indicated that the regulation preventing rebates was a barrier to providing relief to their customers. That barrier has now been removed so auto insurance companies can step up and do the right thing for the people and families of Ontario.” The Government and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) will continue to work together to monitor how the auto insurance sector is responding.

TSW CLOSED UNTIL AT LEAST JUNE

Parks Canada is calling on Canadians to stay home and help limit the spread of COVID-19. Camping, group activities and events at all national parks, national historic sites, heritage canals and national marine conservation areas are suspended until at least May 31, 2020. The current suspension of visitor services and vehicle access by visitors, as well as the temporary closure of visitor facilities, will remain in place until further notice. This means: • All visitor services, including reception, information, lockage and mooring are suspended until further notice; • All visitor facilities, including parking lots, washrooms, day use areas and visitor centres are closed until further notice; • All camping facilities including backcountry camping, oTENTiks, and other roofed accommodations remain closed until further notice; • All events, group and interpretive activities are cancelled until at least May 31, 2020; • Parks Canada will not be taking new reservations until at least June 1, 2020. All existing reservations set to take place prior to May 31, 2020, will be automatically cancelled and refunded in full. These measures are necessary to support the national effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 and reduce health and safety risks to all Canadians. While the Agency looks forward to resuming services, anyone planning a visit should be aware that these measures may extend beyond May 2020 and any resumption of services will take time or be incremental in nature. Parks Canada will continue to deliver services critical for Canadians, including highway maintenance, fire response, dam operations and water management on historic waterways, avalanche control, among others. Detailed information on Parks Canada places and the measures the Agency is taking to limit the spread of COVID-19 can be found at pc.gc.ca. Please check regularly for updates.

ROOTS ‘N’ RAMBLINGS

Submitted by Linda Friend

A cheerful, purple crocus! Peering up from a splash of sunlight on a path in the wooded area behind my home. What a surprise in early April! Yes, I know this is an intruder in a natural area but a very welcome intruder invoking hope of spring and more cheerful times ahead. Closer inspection revealed trillium leaves poking through, still-green ferns just relieved of their burden of snow and evidence of activity in a nearby fox den. April, the “cruellest month” is a two-steps-forward-one step backward interval between winter and spring. The pair of swans who linger each spring in Pigeon Lake have come and gone. Geese are settling into pairs along the shore line and grouse startle with their explosive drumming. This is an exciting time to roam about with camera in hand, recording nature’s reminders that, though life has changed for us, nature continues her eternal rhythm. If you’re itching to get out into your garden,

here are some tips: • Rake away the debris of winter to expose emerging perennial shoots. Cut back last year’s growth before the young shoots become entangled in old material. • Edge flower beds, using these small slices of sod to fill in bare spots in your lawn. • On fruit trees, check for tent worm “nests” which resemble bands of foil wrapped around branches. A quick swipe with a gloved hand solves that problem. • Prune flowering shrubs removing excess, damaged or twisted branches before the sap begins to flow. Do not prune early bloomers such as forsythia and lilac as their buds were set last fall. If branches definitely require pruning, bring them into your home and “force” them into bloom. • Before you set to work on hydrangeas, be sure you know the variety and correct pruning time. Careless pruning now will result in fewer summer blossoms. • Do NOT cutback perennial grasses until new growth appears. BE PATIENT-- warm season grasses remain dormant until late May. On days like today, when brilliant sunshine alternates with driving snow, indoor tasks might be in order. This is an ideal moment to appreciate the beauty of your earlier gardens. Look through photo albums (quaint old books with actual pictures) for your favourite garden shots. Download some photos from your camera, phone, or “device”. Scan them into your computer and make a photo book. Blacks’ photography has an excellent, easy to use website, www.blacks.ca, which produces high quality albums, all from your home. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the creative projects in www.thespruce.com/container-garden-projects-kidswill-love-847955. Who can resist growing celery in a dish or a garden in an eggshell? With all of this entertainment, you will be planting your own gardens before you know it. Our local nurseries are working hard in their greenhouses to provide a spectrum of annuals and perennials for spring 2020. Check out their websites for information. Of special note, Adri and Tim of Stonegate Greenhouse are generously donating the plants for the Horticultural Society swing bridge planters. None of us have experienced anything like the current trauma and uncertainty. We miss our friends and the activities which keep us close. But we must be grateful, too, for the courage of front line workers, for the grocery stores which keep us fed, for the co-operative spirit with which Canadians have engaged in social distancing. Nature sustains our spirits -- a walk, a surprising blossom, a bluebird’s flash -- promise happier times ahead. Stay safe.

NEW CERB RULES

The week of April 6, millions of Canadians applied for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, outlined by Prime Minister Trudeau in March. The Benefit, about $2,000 per month, was put into place to help those who are unable to work during the pandemic. There were conditions attached to the taxable benefit, and some people who were in need were ineligible. Last week, the Prime Minister announced more flexible rules for claiming the CERB, in response to critics who pointed out the initial rules excluded too many people, including those working reduced hours. Seasonal workers and those who have recently run out of employment insurance will now also be eligible for CERB. People who make less than $1,000 a month due to reduced work hours will also qualify. As examples, Trudeau pointed to volunteer firefighters, contractors who can pick up some shifts, or people working part-time in grocery stores. He also announced a wage boost for essential workers who make less than $2,500 a month, including those working in long-term care facilities for the elderly. “We will do whatever we can to help you do your job and support you through this time.” To apply, you must log into your Service Canada account and then, just follow the prompts.

RELIEF FUND TOPS $100,000

Submitted by Margaret Cunningham

Amid the profound tragedy and loss, a ray of hope has emerged in the form of community spirit. The Bobcaygeon and Area COVID-19 Relief Fund, created two weeks ago to support the needs of people affected by the Coronavirus, has now received more than $100,000 in donations. The fund is being administered by the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes, advised by a group of Bobcaygeon residents led by Councillor Seymour-Fagan. The fund is open to all eligible individuals, families, and care facilities’ staff of the Bobcaygeon community to provide support in many different ways including food supplies, transportation, technology, and mental wellness counselling. “Bobcaygeon needs help and our community and neighbours have responded with donations so we can help each other. It’s confidential and people should feel totally comfortable to apply,” notes Ward 2 Councillor Kathleen-Seymour Fagan who helped start the relief fund. Bobcaygeon and area patients, families and health care workers who have needs should contact Councillor Seymour-Fagan at: kseymourfagan@kawarthalakes.ca. Assistance has already been provided to staff at Pinecrest Nursing Home as well as local residents. One recipient who had not been working due to COVID-19 reported “crying good tears” when notified she would be receiving support from the fund. A Bobcaygeon nursing home worker as expressed “heart-felt thanks” on behalf of all her colleagues upon receiving relief kits from the fund. Funds have also been provided to: the Bobcaygeon

Helps Food Bank; a local agency to hire over-night crisis line staff for people having to self-isolate in homes atrisk of violence; and the local Canadian Mental Health Association to provide counselling. Any resident or health worker in Bobcaygeon and area can make an appointment for counselling by calling 705-745-6484 or toll free at 1-866-995-9933. All appointments are free and confidential.

Funds have been donated by residents in Bobcaygeon and across Kawartha Lakes as well as local businesses and summer residents from the Peterborough area, Cobourg and Toronto. Donors Jerry and Mary Lennox, summer residents on Sturgeon Lake who are self-isolating at home in Whitby, also donated in order to do what they could. “Mary and I have been fortunate and have so many friends in Bobcaygeon. It was an easy decision to do something. We can get through this helping in different ways,” says Jerry. “We know the funds will get to the people who need them. The local organizers are second to none,” he adds. Local businesses have also stepped-up. “Now more than ever, those of us who can must come together and help. People have died and COVID-19 has upended our lives and altered our daily routines, but we are a strong community and with each other, we can make a difference,” says Marlene Morrison Nicholls, President of Stewart Morrison Insurance, the first local business to donate providing $10,000 to the relief fund on the first day. To donate to the Bobcaygeon and Area COVID-19 Relief Fund, contact Foundation Coordinator Margaret Cunningham at: 705-731-9775 or by email: info@ kawarthafoundation.ca.

TIME FOR A KITCHEN RE-DO

Now that you’ve spent so much time at home staring at the four walls, you may come out of this wanting to do some sprucing up of your kitchen. We reached out to Steve Hunter, owner/designer, of Precision Renovation to get some tips. With over 31 years of experience these are three general scenarios which I will use for examples of different scope of work in the kitchen makeover process. Example 1 – I can live with the style of my kitchen cabinets, but the colours I want today are different. Alright, so let’s say the door style is very close to contemporary and the cabinets and doors are in pretty good shape. With your contractor, you can decide on which colour you would like, what type of hardware you might prefer and discuss hinging options -- i.e., keep the old ones or upgrade to slow close hinges and drawers.

Example 2 The doors/drawers in my kitchen just must go. They are outdated and are not going to enhance the value of my home. My cabinet boxes are still fine. So, now we look at the option of building new custom-made doors and drawers in your choice of many available styles -- finished or unfinished. Your contractor should have experience with trusted cabinet manufacturers who will make him whatever he and the customer decide on. If your boxes are in good shape, or can be easily repaired back to new condition, this is a very good option. By selecting a contemporary style and colour, you will be well on your way to a beautiful new kitchen. At the same time, you will likely be reviewing the other important components of this make-over. Can I keep my current countertop? Would I prefer to change my floor? What wall colour is going to make my kitchen “pop”? Example 3 I just want to start from scratch, redesigning my whole layout, style, colours etc. In this case, which is probably the most popular choice, you and your contractor can create an entirely new kitchen with everything in it that you would like. Often, a decision is made about enlarging the kitchen by removing walls to open up the living space. As well, you will probably have to make some utility modifications regarding gas or electrical appliance locations, new lighting requirements, outlets, etc. Depending on the size of the area you will be working with, this can now be the time to design an island, peninsula, unique exhaust fan fixtures or exhaust cabinetry.

Other optional modifications you will want to consider • Bulkheads and/or crown mould on top of cabinets • New countertops – granite, quartz, Corian, laminate, concrete, stainless steel • Backsplash Treatment – an excellent finishing touch will bring the whole look together • Special Features – Glass doors, angle cabinets, wine rack, garbage drawer, pots and pan drawers, spice drawers, wall oven/microwave cabinet and many more options to consider

you) items you will be covering together. • Do your homework. Check the contractor’s level of experience and satisfaction with previous clients. Does the contractor get repeat projects from clients? Do they recommend this contractor to others? • Does the contractor carry at least $2 million in liability insurance for any unforeseen damages to your home? • Will the contractor provide a written workmanship warranty in addition to product/material warrantees? • Your gut feel will usually tell you who you do not want to work with, however do your due diligence with the one you like -- it may save any difficulties later. • Ask for an implementation schedule with stages of completion included to your satisfaction. • New lighting – unique hanging fixtures, pot lights, under cabinet lighting, dimmers • Special sink/sinks – many styles/colours to choose from depending on your taste and requirements Important tips When choosing colours/styles/materials, consult with your contractor/designer on the long-term effect on the value of your home. Something new and exciting should also be able to stand the test of time and keep its appeal to a new homeowner. Keeping your new kitchen attractive as well as practical, clean looking and functional will positively affect your home’s resale value! Choosing a Contractor This is so important to your renovation outcome and the journey itself. Some of the most important things to consider are these: • Do I like this individual and will I enjoy working with a person like this? • You must be able to establish mutual respect and a desire to be accommodating to each other during the process. The contractor needs to have very good listening skills in order to take in all the important (to

April 17 to May 1 By Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Enjoy the magic of little things, Aquarius, for they will sustain you! Pisces (Feb. 20 - March 20) During these trying times, Pisces, do not place unfair expectations on yourself. Do what you can and be happy with the outcome, no matter how small. Aries (March 21 to April 20) In times of intense emotions like these, Aries, nightmares are common, as they are our way of dealing with the daytime trauma we are experiencing. We hope your dreams will become better over time -- and keep believing that good dreams can come true. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Taurus, remember to look forward, not back, and try to stay positive, as difficult as that may be in the coming weeks. Hope will guide us all. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Balance. That’s an important word to keep in your vocabulary right now, dear Gemini. We all need to keep a balance in our lives, in work and play, in laughter and seriousness -even at the best of times. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Remember and repeat, Cancer: One day at a time; one day at a time. We all need something to keep us going, and this mantra is good for the soul.

Did You Know ?

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Self-care is especially important, Leo, for you now, as you deal with so many emotions. We know you are working hard to help others, but please look after yourself, too. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Fear and worry are strong emotions, Virgo, and they can quickly take over your life, if you let them. Don’t let them! Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) If you are one of our many essential workers in and around the Bobcaygeon area, Libra, please know how much you are appreciated! And if not, we know everyone is doing something to make these dark days brighter. Thank you! Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance . . .”. Ecclesiastes 3. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) We know you are alone and lonely, dear Sag, but please make sure to keep in touch with your friends and family. There will come an end to this time. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) We know you are being strong, Capricorn, and we know you are carrying a heavy load. Don’t be afraid to reach out to helpers -mental health care workers, social workers, or a friend -- who can help you.

April 20, 2020 - The Kawartha Promoter

Dear Money Lady, I was planning on starting a new business venture just before this Coronavirus started – I am glad I didn’t, but should I consider doing it after. I know it is risky, but I am tired of my regular routine and need a change. I am 52 this year – is that too old to start a new career? -- Julie Good for you – I am glad to see you challenging yourself for more. Many people never do this and never think about what their defining moment is in their life? Everyone will have at least one – “aha” moment, where they finally say, okay I am going to change. I’m going to go in a different direction, make a difference and aspire for more. So, what is yours? This Coronavirus has forced most of us to stop, slow down, and shall I dare say, “smell the roses!” There are so many abundant choices and personal opportunities out there for all of us and we need to build out our existing plans of our future and become engaged and purposeful. Consider going deeper with your thoughts and ideas. Drop your negative beliefs that have always held you back and stop selling your self short. You really can do anything you set your mind to. When looking at starting a business – best to wait and see how the market recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. We anticipate a lot of pentup demand, but I must caution you to go slowly and ensure you have a well thought out business plan. Talk to your banker and see what options are available to assist you in funding your new venture. Rates are now as low as they were after the 2008 Financial Crisis and there seems to be a big push with all the Tier One banks to expand their small business platform. I have seen TD, BMO and RBC all recently increasing their commercial lending opportunities. Remember, successful people fill their mind with all the ways that they can get what they want. Let’s start doing that and no giving up this time. Keep going Julie, believe you can, like yourself for making a change, and discard the inevitable setbacks and obstacles that you will have to overcome in your new journey. Just keep persisting until you succeed. You can go in a different direction, change your life, begin again. Just make a difference. It is often just a mind shift to believing that YOU CAN! Dear Money Lady, The stock market is so crazy right now and I am afraid to keep investing in it. What do you think? -- James I understand your apprehension, however you must remember that we have seen the markets do this many times in the past. It is important to remember that what goes down, always comes right back up when you are looking at the stock market throughout history. This truly is an unprecedented event that we are witnessing worldwide and although we currently see epic spikes in market volatility and a global stock market crash, I can guarantee this will indeed change.

When we find a cure for the Coronavirus (which we will) and things slowly get back to normal, there will be an enormous amount of pent up demand worldwide that will catapult our economy, business and commerce to higher highs than we saw before this crisis. Looking at the last hundred years, there are some facts that are just undeniable. The stock market is very “aggressive-reacting” and “regressive-reacting” which means it swings excessively to one side or the other, in like what seems like, break-neck speed. Knowing this, we have observed in the past that the market has endured countless wars, epidemics, major shocks, always managing to reach significantly new highs over time, than before a crisis, often with highs that we never thought possible. To put it bluntly, there may be a lot of money to be made here if you continue to invest when the market is down. While we can’t say that we are out of the continued downward trend of equity markets, the sharp sell offs POLLOCK: JEAN PATRICIA (WARD, SMITH) Of Bobcaygeon, entered in to rest on Saturday March 28, 2020 in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of Harold Edward (Ted) Pollock and adoring Mother of Tracey Cainer (Ian) of Toronto and Pamela Smith (Richard) of Vancouver. Loving ‘Nana’ to Mitchell Evely and Courtney Jade Russell (Stewart) and great granddaughter Madison Flora, all of whom she cherished. Jean was predeceased by her loving parents, Stanley and Flora Ward, Toronto & Birch Point, Dunsford and her sister, Marilyn of Toronto. She was step-mother to Douglas (Glenys) Pollock ,Scott Pollock, daughter-in-law Laura, and step-grandmother to Christine & Ryan Pollock and their children. Born in the Beaches of Toronto, Jean loved her high school years and studied Commercial Art at Danforth Technical School. She became a Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight Attendant from 1958 to 1961. In March of 1992 she married Ted Pollock and had a wonderful life with him in Bobcaygeon. She was the President of the last Bobcaygeon Historical Society, 1989-92 and a Volunteer, Founding Member & Secretary of the Kawartha Arts and Heritage Society, (Kawartha Settler’s Village, 1990). Supported by her husband, Ted in all she did, she also volunteered with the Boyd Heritage Museum and was instrumental in starting the very successful Museum Antique Show in Bobcaygeon. Jean was helpful to Ted as a volunteer with Bobcaygeon’s Ducks Unlimited and also the Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club. Most recently, Jean served as a member/volunteer & Secretary to the Board of

will soon dissipate and as we have always witnessed in the past, markets will begin to rebuild. Talk to your advisor and see if this new market landscape is something you can take advantage of. This is the time to be buying good stock picks that are at record low prices and a great value. We don’t want to be short sighted when investing for the future. Consider the long-term advantages of buying into the market at low price points to capitalize on future profit when the market turns again. Written by Christine Ibbotson, Author of two new books, “Don’t Panic – How to Manage your Finances and Financial Anxieties During and After the Coronavirus” and “How to Retire Debt Free & Wealthy” available at all bookstores across Canada. If you have a money question, please email through her website – www. askthemoneylady.ca the Kawartha Art Gallery, She was also a devoted member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Bobcaygeon. In 2005, the ‘Year of the Veteran’, she published a book containing the letters her grandfather sent home during the First World War, “Letters from Angus, 1915-1916”. In 2006 she and her daughters embarked on what Jean referred to as pilgrimage of the heart to Ypres, Belgium. There they stood at Angus’ grave in Flanders Field. This was a trip she dedicated to her mother and grandmother. Jean continued to use her artistic talents all her life and loved to paint at home and where ever she travelled. She took many art courses with other wonderful artists, had several showings of her works and could see paintings in almost any venue. Her credo with her artwork was what Michelangelo had said, “Beauty is the Manifestation of the Divine.” For over 25 years she was an Antiques Dealer, participating in local ‘shows’ and later specializing in vintage costume jewellery. Jean loved Ted with all her heart and soul and made sure he knew it, always. They had terrific dogs during their lives together, Sammy, Gypsy and Bessie. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Kawartha Arts Gallery, Lindsay, as expressions of sympathy and may be made by contacting THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, MONK CHAPEL, Bobcaygeon at www.hendrenfuneralhome.com or by calling 705-7383222. Interment will be at Verulam Cemetery, Bobcaygeon, Ont.

For You If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. My life's been full; I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; Don't lengthen it now, with undo grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, he sets me free Free to paint the heaven I'll see And portraits of you I'll always keep. April 20, 2020 - The Kawartha Promoter
