BOBCAYGEON DOG PARK

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have an off-leash dog park in Bobcaygeon with one side for smaller dogs and the other for the larger dogs?

I go to such a place in Florida and take my two dogs almost every day while I’m there. It’s quite large ... probably an acre or more, the ground is covered with a deep layer of wood chips, and the entire area is fenced in. One of my dogs is blind and it’s a safe and fun environment for him to get exercise and be with other little dogs.

The social life there for the dog owners is good too.

I’ve made lots of new friends there. With Bobcaygeon being a retirement community, it would be an excellent way to exercise both your dogs and yourself, especially if your mobility is compromised at all.

I also believe that the summer residents would enjoy it as well.

The park I go to in Naples has dozens and dozens of old tennis balls donated by one of the local tennis clubs -- ideal for throwing for the dogs.

There are faucets for fresh water for the dogs and benches around the perimeter for people to use. Dog owners are fastidious about picking up after their dogs, and they provide the waste bags and bins there as well to make it easy to clean up.

Comments anyone? I know lots of residents here will say, “use the money to fix the potholes” and it’s true ... they do need a LOT of fixing. But wouldn’t a dog park be a lovely addition to our beautiful town? We would need to figure out the where and the how and the money to make it happen.

THANKS FOR CARING

A big thank you to all who came to my aid in front of The Promoter building on Friday, March 31.

I am happy to report that there were no broken bones, etc. However, I did have a good few days in bed with plenty of painkillers.

The incident started by my not having a good grip on the railing as it was wet from the earlier rain. That landed me on my rear end; then when I tried to stand up, my vertigo kicked in and down I went for good.

A very special thanks to the person who called 911, to the three individuals who kindly placed their blankets over me and, of course, the wonderful care I

received from the ambulance staff.

I hope I never need that kind of help again; however, it sure is reassuring to know that there are still so many wonderful people out there.

TRAFFIC CONTROL

In the April 7 edition of The Kawartha Promoter, Linda Evans suggested that a four-way stop is needed at the intersection of King and William Streets due to the “huge volume of traffic”.

While one might wait a minute or so to cross King at times, I think a huge volume of traffic is quite rare.

Please, we don’t need more stop signs in this village. They can result in time wasted, more fuel consumption and more air pollution when cars are forced to stop unnecessarily.

If there is a safety concern, a crosswalk such as the one on Bolton would be more appropriate.

UPROAR OVER TREE REMOVAL

There are numerous residents, individuals & businesses in the town of Bobcaygeon who are very concerned about the number of trees that have been recently cut down/removed from the streets in Bobcaygeon.

We have also noted that several others are marked for cutting! We feel that this is a very serious undertaking that Hydro has commenced in our town and are urgently requesting that this stop until all the information is available to us for open discussion.

• Regulations: per cutting/removal

• Decision: who approved removals was there even a discussion?

• Criteria: per tree removal

• Environmental: impact/study performed?

• Number of trees: total number to be removed

• Property owners: actual liability if they refuse cutting in writing prior to Hydro knocking on their door.

The City’s website states: “the protection, conservation, and enhancement of natural systems.”

Our trees need more respect before it is too late & so do the tourists, residents and businesses of Bobcaygeon!

Editor’s Note: We spoke with Nancy Clark at Hydro One about the tree cutting throughout Bobcaygeon.

Over the next two months, Hydro One’s trained arborists will be undertaking “vegetation maintenance.”

This is undertaken to ensure the safety of the hydro crews and the public, and to ensure that lines and equipment remain viable for distribution of power.

Clark says they work with the property owners to discuss what needs to be done. She stressed that they make every attempt to only have to trim the trees but in some cases, it is safer to remove them.

Falling trees and limbs account for more than 30 percent of power outages in the province. Hydro One’s ongoing commitment is to improve service to customers while meeting their environmental goals and reducing risk to their employees who repair the equipment

Update on Tommy Anderson Community Ice Rink Another amazing outdoor skating season was enjoyed by so many people of our community!!

The ice was up and running by Christmas this year, only to be lost in the freezing rain, rebuilt again until the last warm spell. Mother Nature sure plays havoc, but Steve endures.

With an estimated 24,000 ash trees in the City of Kawartha Lakes, the threat of the Emerald Ash Borer is a reality.

Students and faculty from the Urban Forestry Course at Fleming College teamed up with city staff to develop a high-level plan to manage the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

The students presented information to Council about this pest. It was first seen in the Detroit area in 2002 and has gradually moved north. The EAB is very prolific and each female can produce up to 200 eggs with a 90% survival rate. This pest eats the nutrient rich area of the tree, causing the tree to die and dry out.

That makes it more of a threat during windstorms and other weather-related events.

During the presentation to Council, a 5-step plan was discussed by the students. The first phase would be public education not only in the identification of trees infected with the pest, but also to reduce the risk of spreading the disease to other areas. For instance, infected trees can be burned as firewood, chipped or re-purposed but wood should never be transported out of a local area.

The price tag for removing all the ash trees in the City would be more than $3.1 million. A preventative proactive approach, however, would be less expensive.

This could be done by removing any large, high-risk trees and by trimming others. The plan also showed it was better and less expensive to do the work by staff rather than contracting out.

Councillor Elmslie said that he recently read that due to climate change, trees from other parts of the world might be appropriate for growing here. Fleming students and staff agreed and said it was important to test other species for resilience.

At the City of Kawartha Lakes Council meeting on Tuesday, April 11, the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes steering committee pitched Council on the idea of partnering on a Community Foundation.

Committee representatives Mike Perry and Marlene Morrison-Nichols presented the benefits to the municipality of how the initiative would fill gaps, funding projects that otherwise may not happen. They also assured Council that the Community Foundation would not replace or compete with other foundations.

The plan would leverage funds from the community to help complete projects in many areas such as the environment, arts, health, youth entrepreneurship, agriculture and even infrastructure. Helping the municipality complete projects by securing funding would improve the bottom line, thus lowering taxes.

“It’s a paradigm shift and a game changer for municipal funding,” said Perry.

There are 200 communities across the country, including Peterborough, that have started a Community Foundation with seed funding from their municipalities.

Perry and Nichols asked COKL for $70,000 over three years, the same amount that Peterborough and others have started with. This has allowed these foundations to raise and leverage funding from major philanthropists, legacy giving and other donations. In just a few years, millions of dollars have been raised allowing completion of many community projects.

Council made a motion to send the request to staff for a report back to Council.

occurred throughout many parts of the City. These new changes will enhance the Call Centre that is accessed by dialing 705-324-9411. Along with this upgrade, a self-service directory of commonly accessed City departments will be available.

Another improvement is the creation of Corporate customer service standards that will be presented to Council in June.

To allow for more convenient online service, later this summer will see the launch of new City, Library and Tourism websites. The websites will allow for enhanced online services such as e-commerce, subscriptions to news and updates and a robust community calendar.

BIG ISLAND HARVEST

Curve Lake First Nation requested that Trent Lakes and Selwyn Township councils pass resolutions supporting their historical right to harvest on Big (Chiminis) Island in Pigeon Lake.

Mayor Bev Matthews of Trent Lakes suggested a meeting with the Big Island Management Advisory team on April 20 at 2:00 pm would be a good time to further pursue this request.

Curve Lake First Nation council is seeking resolutions from area municipalities in support of their long awaited application for a community water system. Both Trent Lakes and Selwyn councils later passed resolutions to support the Curve Lake First Nation need for clean water. Peterborough Public Health and the Children’s Aid Society have also endorsed the application.

It was suggested that the next Tri-Council meeting be held on Big Island. A traditional First Nations AGENT drumming ceremony and debris clean up were proposed.

The Peterborough Risk Driven Situation Table was launched in 2016 and meets to address acute risk situations and their root causes. Each week, the OPP meet with a wide range of community agencies including mental health workers, school administrators, First Nation support groups, and hospital reps. Their success rate has been impressive.

As crime rates continue to decline, police are seeking new roles for their services in our communities.

There was a 13.94 percent decline in call volume to Trent Lakes alone when compared to the previous four years.

Inspector Tatchell said that policing requires increased collaboration with community partners.

He sees the central role of police as “helping people get into contact with the right social agency.” He was “quite proud” of the week-long Canadian Mental Health training OPP members undergo yearly to give them more skills.

The OPP have also received funding for a full-time mental health worker to accompany them on calls.

Co-ordinating with the Four Counties Crisis agency reduces repeat calls for service, which is a positive outcome.

Tatchell talked about working with municipal works departments to improve road surfaces in areas that saw frequent collisions often due to slippery conditions when wet. Flashing warning lights have been installed in areas where there have been frequent vehicle collisions with deer.

Peterborough County OPP have ‘one of the more active marine patrols in the Central region’. Marine patrols for Big Island in Pigeon Lake will be increased this summer with many more night patrols of the area.

‘Borderless policing’ is also an initiative that is working. OPP dispatchers now look to see which officers are closer to answer calls more promptly, whether they are from the City of Kawartha Lakes or Peterborough County OPP.

Are we losing our empathy?

Imagine this. You are sitting on your couch reading a story to your 2-year old child. You’ve spent a perfect day outside playing and now, with their little rosy, chubby cheeks and wide eyes, it’s time for bed. Your heart is brimming with love for them.

Then, this idyllic scene comes to an abrupt and violent end as a bomb hits part of your house. The sound was so loud your eardrums are ringing, you can barely see for the dust and debris. You hear a lot of screaming. You can’t find your kids and start to panic. Running through what remains of your house, you are stepping on nails and bricks, searching every corner looking for them. Then you spot ten, tiny toes sticking out from under the rubble. Frantically you dig at the debris and free your child, but it’s too late, they are gone.

This is the scene that plays out every day in Syria; it’s their reality. Since the civil war began in 2011, an estimated 400,000 Syrians have been killed, according to figures issued by the United Nations last year. Yet the rest of the world has stood by and let this happen for years. The leaders of powerful countries have been wringing their hands.

On April 4th, 2017 the Syrian government allegedly used Sarin gas on its own people. Thirty innocent children were among those who died a horrific death, hundreds more were wounded.

A few days after this, US President Donald Trump bombed Syria. He sent 59 cruise missiles in retaliation for the regime’s use of chemical weapons against its own people.

Some politicians and the general public at large have questioned this move and Trump’s motives. Some say we shouldn’t interfere. That it isn’t our problem. Why should we risk our own lives?

I have a good reason … we are all human beings. There but for the grace of God go I. That’s why!

I’m not saying I agree with war or violence. But sometimes the world needs to act for the greater good, to keep other people’s children safe. Without empathy, our humanity is dead.

While other world leaders were busy doing nothing, Canadians from coast to coast have been busy trying to help Syrian Refugees. More than 35,000 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada since November 2015.

The New Canadians Centre in Peterborough welcomed more than 30 Syrian refugee families by March 31, 2017.

They match every new family with a volunteer support group to provide a welcome reception, social connections and activities, orientation to the community, assistance with childcare, transportation to appointments and assistance with finding permanent housing. Most of the people working with these families are volunteers. They are giving their time and showing empathy.

A second Syrian family is expected to arrive in Bobcaygeon later this month.

Maybe empathy is alive and well after all.

Our Syrian family, the Al Awads, have now survived their second winter in Canada and, like most of us, they are very much looking forward to spring and warmer weather.

The entire Al Awad family continues to benefit from regular ESL sessions in their apartment delivered by a dedicated team of teachers. Yamama, the oldest of the Al Awad children, continues to thrive in her Junior Kindergarten class in Bobcaygeon and has become quite fluent in English. Her siblings Hadeel, Yaman and baby Mohammad are getting more accustomed to life in Bobcaygeon and have made every effort to enjoy the snow and outdoor activities during the past winter months with parents Mariam and Yousef.

The exciting news is that the arrival of our second family is imminent. The Bobcaygeon Area Refugee Committee (BARC) has been working behind the scenes under the Family Link Program to bring Yousef’s sister, her husband and two young children here to Bobcaygeon. We are hoping that the Al Bashirs will be joining us in the next few weeks and we are anxiously awaiting news of their flight to Canada.

The arrival of a second family means that BARC is looking for several additional volunteers to help in a number of areas. One pressing need will be for drivers to help with the many transportation needs that arise with our new families. BARC is accepting donations for those who would like to support our second Syrian family. Cheques can be made out to Trinity United Church with BARC clearly written in the memo line. FILMS BY THE FALLS

Film and art meet at the next presentation of the Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit -- Films by the Falls.

The feature film “Maudie “ will run on April 25 at Fenelon Falls Secondary School. It is rated 14A.

The film is a biography of one of Canada’s most well-known folk artists set in the Canadian Maritimes in the 1930s. This 13-year project has evolved into a raw, genuine and artistic masterpiece. The maritime scenery and replication of Maudie’s home come to life as do the simple images from the brush in the arthritic hands of Maud Lewis.

The pre-show event is a pop-up art gallery featuring local artists Naomi Taylor, Gail McFadden, Ian Ball and Hanneke Koonstra.

Doors open at 6:30pm with the feature presentation at 7:30pm.

TSW BRIDGES UNDER REPAIR

In the coming weeks, Parks Canada will be conducting spring maintenance at some of our swing bridges and sites along the Trent-Severn Waterway, in preparation for the 2017 navigation season. This includes preventative maintenance tasks like washing and greasing swing bridges and conducting visual inspections to ensure their safe operability.

Drivers can expect some traffic delays of about 10 minutes between April 10 and mid-May to swing bridges including the Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge and the Bolsover Swing Bridge.

Motorists are invited to plan their routes accordingly in order to avoid delays. To accommodate school bus traffic, efforts will be made to keep bridge delays between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm. Parks Canada wishes to thank bridge users for their patience during the maintenance period.

A Place Called Home is one of those organizations.

And now, with their limited storage space bursting at the seams, they’re hosting a Silent Auction of some of that furniture.

“Anyone who wants to get some high-end, highquality items at silent auction prices, is going to want to get in on this opportunity,” says Zita Devan, the volunteer event convenor for the Auction.

The silent auction of 17 items, including Uttermost table lamps and larger furniture pieces by Hooker, takes place at the Lindsay Square Mall on April 27, 28 and 29. The auction is open during mall hours, but bids close at 4pm on the 29th.

“We thank Southern Comfort for helping us turn this worthwhile donation into an event,” says Devan.

“Since we have to raise more than $100,000 over and above our funding, this will go directly to the costs of running the hostel. It’s a win-win situation.”

A Place Called Home is a charitable, non-profit organization that has been providing shelter and 24/7 support services to the homeless -- and those at risk of becoming homeless -- since 1995. CAA WORST ROADS NOMS OPEN

ART CONTEST WINNER: Emma Graham, a Grade 12 student at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, was the 2017 winner of the Library Award as part of the Kawartha Art Gallery Secondary School Juried Show.

Her piece “Down the Rabbit Hole” was inspired by her love of the story “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll and was part of an art project on altered books introduced by Emma’s art teacher. Kawartha Lakes Public Library is pleased to display “Down the Rabbit Hole” in the Children’s Services area of Lindsay Library.

My husband is a funny guy. He makes up words and names for different things. He calls Bobcaygeon “Bumpcaygeon” because of the potholes around the town. Many of us don’t do anything about it, like calling the City to have the holes fixed. Maybe this will ring a few bells at City Hall.

Voting is now open for the annual CAA Worst Roads campaign. It’s not only about the potholes, though, roadways can be nominated for poor or non-existent cycling or walking areas or even poor road signs.

CAA South Central Ontario recently conducted a member survey on the perception of local road conditions. Sixty-nine percent of respondents indicated that there is a road in their local community or on their commute that requires repair and 71 percent of these members indicated that they have never taken action to get the road repaired.

The top voted CAA Worst Roads from 2016 were found in Prince Edward County, Timmins, Thunder Bay, St. Catharines, Hamilton, Sudbury and Toronto.

Votes for CAA’s Worst Roads can be cast at www.caaworstroads. com until May 1st. Once voting is closed, CAA will compile a list of the Top 10 Worst Roads in Ontario and the worst roads in regions across the province. The regional top five lists will help shine a light on the state of local roads in municipalities across Ontario. CAA will present the list of 2017 Worst Roads to local and provincial officials to help inform future funding and planning decisions.

Participants will be entered weekly into prize draws, concluding with a grand prize draw to win free gas for a year.

It’s Easy Being Green

One day, there were a few crows eying my garbage at the end of my driveway. As they started getting closer and were about to start making a big mess I remembered that crows are clever, social beings. So I opened my front door and heckled them, and then gave them the “stink eye” for a few minutes. It worked. Somehow.

Until the next week, and many weeks to follow when I wasn’t there to shoo them away. Getting annoyed with the mess I started asking around to see how everyone else kept them away. I heard things like building a box for the end of the driveway, using

a garbage can, and even spraying bags with a pepper or bleach solution (not safe for the truck drivers or any wildlife guys).

I didn’t want to do any of that. Then it dawned on me that they wanted my food scraps. If I could eliminate food scraps out of our garbage, they wouldn’t want our garbage at all, but how does one do that?

Composting - that’s how! Well, I had heard composting is one of the greenest things you can do, so this was the nudge to get me started.

With the help of my husband I put together a box out of old 2x4’s, started putting all of our fruit and veggie scraps into a pail on our counter, and then taking them out to the compost box. Twice a year when I rake the lawn, I add some leaves into the box and, like magic, the scraps just melt away into dirt.

I didn’t get rid of the crows though. Turns out they prefer things that can’t be composted, like meat.

But, with less “wet” garbage, the mess was much easier to clean up. It also reduced our garbage by about 50 percent, making it easier to carry to the curb. And, I was reducing my carbon footprint and putting valuable materials back into the soil!

Nature Explorer Summer Camp

Parents are encouraged to register early for the Nature Explorer Summer Camps, with the first of four one-week summer camps offered at Fleming College and Ken Reid Conservation Area already more than half-full.

The four, one-week camps offered in partnership between Fleming College and Kawartha Conservation will be held in July and August.

The week-long summer camps focus on fun, hands-on activities around environmental education

and outdoor skills. Campers are going to explore wildlife, get their hands dirty, participate in activities that teach outdoor skills, conduct water measurements and explore aquatic life, undertake experiments and much more.

Week A camps will be held from July 17 to July 21 and August 21 to 25, while Week B camps will be held from July 24 to 28 and August 14 to August 18.

We make a conscious effort to improve our physical health by incorporating good nutrition and daily exercise in our routines. When it comes to mental health, do you pay as close attention?

Here are some tips to maintain and improve your mental wellness:

Track gratitude and achievement. At the end of day review three things you are grateful for and three things you accomplished. For optimal results, write them down in a journal. However, simply reflecting on things that make you feel good is highly beneficial.

Get creative. Experiment with a new recipe, work on an art idea, write a poem, or try a do-it-yourself home project. Creative expression allows you to step outside of your comfort zone and day-to-day mundane tasks. Make sure your to-do list contains some of these “create” items and not only “get it done” tasks.

Express Your Love. Quality relationships are key for a happy life and significantly improve our ability to handle life challenges. Express your love with your family, friends, community, and pets.

Laugh. Even a couple of minutes of laughter improves our mental wellness and can have lasting effects. Spend time with your friends, watch a comedy, or read jokes. Also try to laugh at some silly life situations instead of criticizing and blaming yourself.

There are many more methods to improve or maintain mental wellness and their effectiveness ranges from one person to another. So it is important to find and practice strategies that are right for you.

Your social worker, therapist, or doctor could provide you with additional support if you need to discuss your mental health challenges. Similarly to your physical health, sometimes you need a trained professional to treat your mental health for a period of time or periodically.

HIP RECOGNIZED FOR CANCER SUPPORT

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has recognized Kingston hometown heroes the Tragically Hip for their support of brain cancer research. A commemorative plaque was presented to the band in honour of their support for cancer clinical trials at the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG).

CCTG, housed at Queen’s University in Kingston, is supported by a core grant from the Canadian Cancer Society.

Since the announcement last year that the Hip’s frontman, Gord Downie, has glioblastoma (an aggressive form of brain cancer), many Canadians have shown their support through donations to CCS. “The Canadian Cancer Society is very grateful to the Tragically Hip and their generous fans for this donation of $400,000 for brain cancer research,” says Lynne Hudson, CCS president and CEO. “Clinical trials offer hope for people with cancer and provide an opportunity for researchers to find better treatments for others in the future. CCS is proud to be able to support clinical trials at CCTG across the country through donations from the public.”

Clinical trials can help patients directly. For example, in collaboration with colleagues in Europe, CCTG conducted a trial to see if a chemotherapy drug called temozolomide along with radiation following surgery for glioblastoma could improve survival. The trial showed positive results, and this combination therapy is what Downie received at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Every day about 25 Canadians are diagnosed with some form of brain tumour. Glioblastoma is an aggressive disease and is the most common primary brain cancer in adults. Unfortunately, most adults with a diagnosis of glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after diagnosis.

EPIPEN RECALL

Pfizer Canada Inc., the Canadian distributor of EpiPen® (epinephrine) Auto-Injector has announced a voluntary recall in consultation with Health Canada of one lot of EpiPen 0.3 mg (epinephrine) and one lot of EpiPen Jr 0.15 mg (epinephrine) Auto-Injectors distributed in Canada.

In Canada, the recall impacts one lot (5GU763) of the 0.3 mg strength of EpiPen Auto-Injector expiring in May 2017 and one lot (5GR765) of the 0.15 mg strength of EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector expiring in March 2017.

This voluntary recall is being conducted as a result of the receipt of two previously disclosed reports outside of Canada of failure to activate the device due to a potential defect in a supplier component.

The potential defect could make the device difficult to activate in an emergency (failure to activate or increased force needed to activate) and have significant health consequences for a patient experiencing a lifethreatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

The incidence of the defect is extremely rare and testing and analysis across the potentially impacted lots has not identified any units with a defect.

Patients should keep their existing product until their replacement product can be secured.

PALLIATIVE CARE IN THE BUDGET

The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to see the recent federal budget followed through on the government’s commitment to improving home and palliative care.

Access to better palliative care is becoming increasingly urgent as Canada’s aging population faces an almost 40 percent increase in the number of new cancer cases by 2030.

“About 8 out of 10 people who receive palliative care are cancer patients,” says Kelly Masotti, director, public issues, Canadian Cancer Society.

This federal budget fulfills the government’s commitment to invest $11 billion over the next 10 years in home care, palliative care and mental health.

However, money alone won’t alleviate the burden on the healthcare system or improve the lives of those affected by cancer unless it is accompanied by concrete plans for this investment.

CCS has been advocating for better palliative care options with all levels of government in order to ensure that all Canadians can access affordable, highquality palliative care in the setting of their choice.

There’s a new, free six-week workshop called Powerful Tools for Caregivers. Part of the SelfManagement Program, caregivers can learn the skills and tools needed to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk, and communicate their needs to family members and health care providers.

The LHIN will offer nine free workshop sessions between April and September 2017.

Dow, Floyd Harvey Passed peacefully at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario on April 3, 2017 at the age of 74.

Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Willow Dorothy Elizabeth Dow (née Milne); children, Jennifer May Dow-Little (Michael Little) of London, ON, Heather Dorothy Dow (Robert Switzer) of Kingston, ON and his grandchildren, Mekenzie (12), Makayla (6), Liam (20), Andrew (18), Will (20), Hannah (14); siblings, Jean (Gord) of Seaforth, ON, Brenda (Barry) of Stratford, ON, Bruce (Joan) of Stratford, ON, Marlene (Ray) of Mitchell, ON and Joyce (Ralph) of Clinton, ON. He is survived by his many nieces and nephews, known by some as “Uncle Pink”. He is predeceased by his parents Dorothy Irene Dow and Harvey Kitchener Dow of Cromarty, ON. Floyd was born on December 21, 1942 in Stratford, ON to Dorothy and Harvey. He married Willow Dorothy Elizabeth Milne on April 1, 1967, the year of Canada’s Centennial, having met at the branch where they were employed (as assistant manager and Willow, a teller). After moving to Kemptville, Ontario, Floyd and Willow started their family, welcoming first daughter Jennifer and then Heather. Floyd’s career brought the family to Manotick, Ontario and then to Kingston but no matter where Floyd lived, he always encouraged his daughters to pursue their goals. Upon completing business management courses, he had a successful 25-year banking career followed by a 15year career as a dealership Financial Services Manager in Kingston.

They retired to their home in Nogies Creek, ON where they lived the cottage-life dream; enjoying years of boating on the Trent-Severn Waterway with family and friends. He was a consummate tinkerer and had amassed an incredible collection of tools, with a memory of each item’s location that could be recalled at any time. Like his father, Floyd had the farmer’s way of fixing anything, with varying degrees of success. When not outside, Floyd was passionate about history. He was an avid reader of WWI and WWII anthologies and historical books. Floyd would often sit in his chair, by the river, and read. Other interests included computers and technology which he combined with his love of ancestry; using the internet and available resources to locate past relatives. Pets were an important part of his life and he enjoyed his daily walks with Sparky.

Floyd loved camping and frequented most Ontario parks to pitch a tent, play his banjo and sing old standards; often drawing a crowd of like-minded musicians.

Cremation has taken place in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. A Celebration of Life will take place at Nogies Creek, Ontario in the spring. Floyd will be interred alongside his mother and father at Roy’s Cemetery in Fullerton, Ontario at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. This is the result of many factors such as more severe and unpredictable weather patterns, aging infrastructure and our growing population.

Common types of water damage include roof leaks from heavy rains or ice damning, basement flooding from sump pump failure or sewer backup, burst pipes due to freezing or aging systems and water leaks from appliances. These instances will generally be covered under a typical homeowners policy.

Unfortunately, Canada now has 20 times the storms and floods than we did just two decades ago. Major floods represent almost 40% of all natural disasters ever recorded in this country and costs to repair property from water damage are also on the rise.

Previously Canada was the only G8 country where flood insurance was not available to homeowners. Protection is now available to provide coverage for loss or damage resulting from overland water. This means coverage for losses to the exterior or interior of your dwelling from sudden accumulation or runoff of surface waters including torrential rainfall or spring thaw and from overflows from any body of fresh water.

Water damage is serious business. It can be a big drain - financially, emotionally, even physically. Just one inch is all it takes to destroy sentimental or irreplaceable items, or to cause expensive structural damage.

National Day of Mourning

On April 28, workplaces across Canada will take time to reflect on the lives lost in workplace accidents or those who have suffered occupational illnesses and injuries.

It’s also a time to honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

And, most important, it is a day to focus on preventing future tragedies.

According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, the most recent statistics from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) indicate that in 2015, 852 workplace deaths were recorded in Canada. Among those dead were four young workers aged 15 to 19 years; and another 11 workers aged 20 to 24 years.

Add to these fatalities the 232,629 claims accepted for lost time due to a work-related injury or disease and the fact that these statistics only include what is reported and accepted by the compensation boards, it is safe to say that the total number of workers impacted is even higher.

By working together – with employers, workers and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur.

Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each workday.
