Clean Roadways For Earth Day

Residents of Trent Lakes can feel good about helping clean up their community and have a chance at a prize, too. In celebration of Earth Day 2023 (April 22), the Municipality of Trent Lakes is introducing Clean Roadways For Earth Day!

Clean Roadways For Earth Day allows Trent Lakes’ residents to be entered into a draw for a FoodCycler unit if they clean a municipal roadway between April 15 to April 30, 2023.

To sign up, residents only need to register online as an individual or group. The municipality will then email instructions on picking up their supply kit, including a one time free waste card. To be officially entered into the draw for a FoodCycler, participants must submit a picture with the garbage bag(s) after the cleanup.

“We always have residents inquiring about our FoodCycler program, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to supply a free unit to the community while helping our local environment,” says Chelsea Carpenter, Supervisor of Waste and Public Works Coordinator with the Municipality of Trent Lakes.

A FoodCycler is a small electronic device that breaks down food waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment that can be used in gardening. It retails for $499 plus tax on the official FoodCycler website.

In 2021, the Municipality of Trent Lakes partnered with Food Cycle Science (FCS), an Ottawa-based company, to offer residents FoodCycler units through a pilot Food Waste Diversion program.

FoodCycler units were first offered to 150 households at a subsidized rate, with a well-received response from the community. Trent Lakes continues to expand the program, with at least 400 households in Trent Lakes utilizing the FoodCycler so far.

The results? An estimated 96 metric tonnes of food waste are now diverted per year from Trent Lakes’ landfills, resulting in a reduction of the municipality’s carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, and weekly garbage quantities.

For its initiatives, the Municipality of Trent Lakes was proud to receive the 2022 Innovation Award from Municipal World for reducing organic waste.

“Residents have really shown their passion and commitment to reducing waste and creating a long-term impact on environmental protection,” says Carpenter. “This is another great opportunity for us to make a difference together as a community.”

GO JUMP IN THE LAKE –AGAIN!

For the fourth straight year, that’s exactly what residents in the Coboconk area will be doing in support of the Coboconk and Area Foodbank. The fourth annual Jump in the Lake Challenge takes place on Saturday, May 6 at 2pm.

Since 2020, more than 100 participants and generous donors in this exciting annual event have raised over $125,000 for our local community. This year’s goal is $25,000.

Unlike organized Polar Bear dips that happen in one central location, this exciting event takes place off each participant’s dock or waterfront location of their choice.

This year’s Jump in the Lake Challenge will be dedicated to fighting hunger in our community. Donations are going to support the Coboconk and Area Food Bank (CAFB). The CAFB supports the communities of Norland, Kirkfield and Coboconk and surrounding areas.

According to CAFB chairperson, Amy Alfredsson, food bank use in our area has more than doubled in the past 18 months and continues to increase monthly with more and more families accessing CAFB services. “With the increase in food prices, and the increase in client numbers, our food costs are the highest they have ever been,” said Alfredsson. “We are 100% volunteer operated so money donated goes mainly to food and supplies. We appreciate your much needed support!”

Administration Offices

All Administration and Municipal Service Centres are closed during regular hours of operation on Good Friday. Municipal Service Centres will return to regular business hours on Monday, April 10.

Waste and Recycling

Landfills will be closed on Good Friday. They will return to regular operating hours on Saturday, April 8.

Public Library

All library branches will be closed on Good Friday, with regular operating hours returning on Saturday, April 8.

Lindsay Transit

There will be no Lindsay Transit or LIMO Specialized Transit service on Friday April 7.

Parks and Recreation

All Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed on Friday, April 7 for Good Friday. This includes the Administrative Office, all Recreation Centres, Arenas and Pools.

The Weight Room at the Lindsay Recreation Complex and Forbert Memorial Pool, Bobcaygeon will resume regular hours on Saturday, April 8. No aquatic classes will take place from April 7 through April 10. No fitness classes will take place from April 7 through April 9.

Public Swimming will be available on Saturday, April 8 and Monday, April 10.

Public Skating will be available at the Lindsay Recreation Complex on Saturday, April 8 and Monday, April 10. Pre-registration is required, Visit www.kawarthalakes.ca for links to registrations.

Mothers Day Tour

It’s never too early to start planning a special activity to celebrate your Mom in May. The Rolling Hills Studio and Heritage Tour 2023 will take place Saturday, May 13and Sunday, May 14, in Bethany and Pontypool and will include places of historical interest, as well as 10 unique artists and artisans.

• In Pontypool, Laura Boyle, Running Paints Studio, is showing her wood carving and paintings of horses: Kyla Vitek will be showing her beautiful handmade silver jewellery, and the Old Pontypool Grain Barn will be open for visitors with volunteers from the Manvers Historical Society.

• Photographer Tim Bellhouse will open his studio just north of Bethany.

• Also in Bethany, visitors can visit the Old Bethany Post Office and Research Centre with volunteers from the Manvers Historical Society and the Old Bethany General Store, that has been standing on the main street, HWY 7A, since the mid 1800’s.

• At Williams Design Studio, in ‘downtown’ Bethany, there will be six artists showing their work. Paul Williams will have a dozen fountains flowing in the Secret Garden; Beverley Williams will show her gourd art and jewellery; Walter and Peggy Cracknell will be exhibiting their lovely photographic art; Sandy Cline will be demonstrating his soap stone carving; and Amberlea Williams will have her newly published children’s book and will talk about how to start a Bee Friendly Garden with wildflower seeds. Williams Design Studio was an early Ontario General Store, built around 1850’s and rebuilt after the Great Fire of Bethany in1911. Their studio has been selected as an excellent example of the old ‘Boom Town’ front and Beverley and Paul have restored it since 1977 when they bought it.

On Saturday, the Bethany United Church Hub will be having an open house to show off local small businesses that make and sell various products like donuts, candies, etc.

Hike For Hospice

Hike for Hospice 2023 is going to be in person this year for the first time since 2019. The Hike will take place at Auk’s Lodge Fleming College, 200 Albert St S. in Lindsay on May 7, 2023. Sign in opens at 11a.m. The walk will begin approximately 1pm.

The Hike will kick off National Hospice Week, which runs this year from May 7 to May 14.

New Offerings From Kan

The Kawartha Arts Network (KAN) has announced some new offerings for the art lover and artists.

• The KAN gift certificate is an exciting chance to share one or more opportunities for creativity,” says Laurie Johnson, Advertising Lead for KAN. The gift certificate can be used for participation in classes from knowledgeable artist members of Kawartha Arts Network, a piece of artwork from an individual artist, or an artist membership in the coop. Note that the cost of a membership is $45 and requires participating in a committee to assist with the running of the not-for-profit arts organization.

• Starting in the spring of 2023, there are a variety of workshops and classes in diverse media for all levels of experience and interest. Classes will be offered in beginner acrylic painting, pen and ink, lino print on fabric and paper, classes with the option of using oils or acrylics, screen printing, digital and cell phone photography, the use of photo transfers in paintings, and two children’s classes. There will also be a Monday night drawing series for 14 weeks with three sections: basic drawing skills, figurative drawing and visual storytelling.

Ontario Invests In Omemee Kids

As part of Ontario’s ongoing efforts to build and improve local schools, the province provided Trillium Lakelands District School Board with approval to proceed to tender a two room kindergarten addition and a Child Care Centre. Which includes internal retrofits at Scott Young Public School in Omemee. This is supported by an investment of $5.9 million, including additional funding of $2.4 million.

“This is great news for the families whose children will attend Scott Young Public School,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “This investment will include 104 new kindergarten spaces, 49 new child care spaces, 3 new child care rooms, 1 room EarlyON Child and Family Centre.”

The Ontario government is delivering more than $26.6 billion in education funding for the 2022-23 school year, the highest investment in public education in Ontario’s history. Investing in the province’s schools is an integral part of Ontario’s Plan to Catch Up, which focuses on the priorities of parents and includes five key components:

• Kids being back in the classroom with a full school experience that includes extracurriculars like sports, band and field trips;

• Investing more than $175 million for enhanced tutoring support programs delivered by school boards and community partners, with a focus on reading, writing and math;

• Updating the curriculum to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow, including opportunities in the skilled trades;

• Providing more money to build schools and improve education; and

• Allocating $90 million – the highest amount in Ontario history to support student mental health. Once completed, this project will deliver 104 kindergarten spaces and 49 child care spaces for local families. The investment is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to provide $14 billion to support school construction, repairs and renewals over 10 years. Since 2018, the government has approved nearly 200 school construction projects and the development of more than 300 child care and education building-related projects, of which, more than 100 are actively under construction.

“We are excited to develop these new spaces for the Omemee community. The new addition and retrofits to the current spaces at Scott Young Public School will allow us to accommodate more students and have dedicated spaces for both child care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, as well as EarlyON,” said Trillium Lakelands District School Board, Director of Education, Wes Hahn.

Swing Bridge Progress

Parks Canada advises that following the successful lowering of the swing bridge onto its pintle (center support) and balance rails, the bridge was manually swung yesterday, April 4, 2023, to test its fit and function. This will allow for the remaining work on the bridge abutments and road to progress.

In addition, as the work continues, pedestrian access across the lock gates will be closed intermittently on April 10 and 11 to facilitate the re-installation of the lock gate cylinders.

Parks Canada continues to work with the contractor, stressing the importance of completing the project.

The remaining tasks include the forming and pouring of concrete on the bridge abutments, installation of the remaining mechanical components, hydraulic and electrical components, and paving.

Diners Club In Coby

Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes has launched a new Diners Club in Coboconk with the first event on April 27.

The Diners Club takes place in a community setting and is focused on creating opportunities for people with special needs and seniors to stay connected and engaged while enjoying a wonderful meal.

Soccer Skills Camp

Think your child is the next Pele or Christine Sinclair on the pitch? The Buckhorn Community Centre is hosting a Soccer Skills Clinic from May 29 to July 3.

The coaches are Robin McGraw, a former Olympian, Coach of the Oshawa Kicks and an inductee in the Hall of Fame; and Stan Paul Bombino, Head Coach of the Oshawa Flames and an inductee in the Soccer Academy Hall of Fame.

The camp takes place Mondays from May 29 to July 3 from 5:30pm to 7pm for children aged 5 to 12. There are limited spaces available. The cost is $20 for BCC members and $25 for non-members.

Globus Hosts The Starlight Ball

Globus Theatre is turning 20 and that deserves a party to end all parties - so why not join in the festivities. Come and celebrate at the fundraising event of the year, The Starlight Ball, on Saturday, April 22.

Join Globus for a night of dancing and carousing, fabulous food and an exciting silent auction featuring prizes donated by the supportive community of local businesses. You can also meet some of your favourite performers from past seasons.

Since 2003, Globus, a charitable arts organization, has entertained the local community and encouraged cultural visitors to the region, producing almost 200 productions, bringing fantastic performers from across Canada to the Kawartha Lakes, and now reaching an audience of10,000 people a year.

In April 2022, Globus launched a $2 million dollar Raising the Barn Capital Campaign. The campaign currently stands at $1.33 million, however, the deadline to meet the goal is fast approaching.

On April 22, the red carpet rolls out at 6pm, with dinner at 7pm. Speeches, dancing and entertainment will follow.

Tickets are $125 (plus HST) per person. Guests will be seated at tables of eight. Your ticket includes a $60 charitable tax receipt and must be purchased in advanced. There will be no tickets at the door. Dinner choices will be available when booking.

Fenelon Falls Bridge Project

The preliminary planning and design work for the Fenelon Falls Bridge replacement began last year (2022).

Progress on the evaluation of options for replacement of the Fenelon Falls Bridge was slowed due to high flow conditions within the river last Fall.

Parks Canada is currently working on studies for major rehabilitation work on the upstream dam and spillways in the area. The spillway along the north side of the river feeds the Orillia Power Generating Station therefore any proposed bridge work will have a major impact on Orillia Power. Parks Canada is evaluating all options for the spillway(s) and they will ultimately be in control of permitting any proposed City works with consideration for their own dam program and the needs of Orillia Power.

The consultant, D.M. Wills Associates Limited, will be completing all necessary desktop exercises and field work to ensure that they have a full understanding of the natural environment, and fisheries that may affect construction methods, timing and mitigation measures.

The field work is set to resume in May 2023 and a Public Information Centre will be held in Fall 2023. Follow along with the project on the Major Projects page at kawarthalakes.ca.

OPTOMETRISTS SIGN 4-YEAR DEAL

The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) has ratified a new four-year funding agreement with the Government of Ontario. The changes in this agreement are based on the best available clinical evidence and expert opinion for providing people appropriate eye care, as well as the expert advice of the OAO provided over months of bilateral discussions with the Ministry of Health.

Beginning April 1, 2023, payments to optometrists will increase for some OHIP insured optometry services and for eye exams provided to social assistance recipients.

On September 1, 2023, changes included in the agreement will begin to help increase access to care for people with chronic diseases such as glaucoma and ocular complications due to diabetes.

Seniors diagnosed with an eligible medical condition requiring ongoing monitoring will continue to receive an OHIP-insured annual eye exam as well as two follow-up minor assessments. Seniors who do not have an eligible medical condition, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetes, will continue to receive preventative eye care through an OHIP-insured eye exam every 18 months, as well as two additional follow-up minor assessments.

There are no changes under this agreement to eligibility coverage for children or Ontarians receiving social assistance.

The Trent Lakes Recreation Association is hosting a fundraiser for the Kawartha “Youth Performing Arts’ Academy at Lakehurst Hall on Saturday, April 29.

Province Invests In Doctors

The Ontario government is further expanding the number of medical school spots to historic highs while helping Ontario students become doctors in the province, whether they studied at home or abroad.

Starting in 2023, the government is investing an additional $33 million over three years to add another 100 undergraduate medical school seats and another 154 postgraduate medical training seats beginning in 2024, both now prioritized for Ontario residents.

“Too many Ontario students are having to go abroad for medical school because they can’t find residency spots here in their home province while international students learn here then leave,” said Premier Doug Ford. “That’s why we’re expanding the number of undergraduate and graduate medical school spots and putting qualified Ontario students at the front of the line. We’re training the next generation of Ontario doctors right here in Ontario to stay here and care for Ontario communities.”

The new investment builds on the expansion of 160 undergraduate and 295 postgraduate medical training seats announced last year, the largest expansion of Ontario’s medical school system in over a decade.
