Where Do I Go?

I can’t tell you how distraught I was when reading the letter to the editor on “The Arts & Heritage Trail” in The Promoter (March 10).

I had no idea that The Boyd Heritage Museum had moved to Fenelon Falls. No one told me.

Apparently, I have been going to the wrong workplace address for some time. No one gave me a new key or an address in Fenelon. No one gave me a parking spot or mileage expenses and now I know what happed to the proposed renovation. It happened in Fenelon Falls.

Please move the Museum back to Bobcaygeon. I miss my colleagues already.

I had contacted this department approximately 18 months ago, registering a complaint about the huge volume of traffic at the intersection of William Street and King Street in Bobcaygeon. The response I received indicated a traffic study would be required before

consideration for a four-way stop could be implemented.

If you’re handicapped and trying to cross the street, you should first say a little prayer because if someone doesn’t stop for you, you may have to run which, of course, would create a problem if you are limited.

We now have the Subway Shop, Cheese Hideaway, Grants Butcher Shop, variety store and Beer Store, which creates a fair amount of business for this area (which is positive). Plus you have traffic coming from or going to Foodland. William Street also provides a shortcut for those who don’t want to deal with the light at Highway 36 and King.

Three new stop signs have been installed in Bobcaygeon along Front Street without a traffic survey being completed. The traffic at those locations is far less than the intersection I am complaining about.

Suggested resolution would be to immediately make the intersection of William and King a four-way stop before the summer traffic commences. Failing this, I would appreciate an explanation why the stop signs were installed on Front Street and not at William and King, which has a higher volume of traffic.

Soupalicious!

Myself along with other volunteers had the privilege of assisting “Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank” with their recent fundraiser “Soupalicious.”

There were just under 250 tickets sold for this tasty event held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bobcaygeon.

Many thanks to the nine restaurants that took the time to cook and bring their own soup creations and to the Legion for their generous use of their establishment.

Last but not least thank you to those who attended and enjoyed tasting the soups!

On Tuesday, March 28, City of Kawartha Lakes Council and staff met at Coronation Hall Omemee to review 2016 accomplishments and future needs.

CAO Ron Taylor presented the good news that the city grew by 3%, Trent Severn Lock usage was up 6%, the City achieved a $1.4M surplus and 15 new developments are in progress across the city with a total value of all new construction increasing by $41M over 2016.

Waste Management successfully implemented a door-to-door battery collection and a clear bag program resulting in a large increase in recyclables diverted from landfills. Approvals for expansion of the Fenelon Falls, Eldon and Lindsay landfills were granted by the Ministry, which will increase capacity for many years to come.

Of note, approval was secured from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to do pilot testing on a new initiative “Pollinator Cover for the Fenelon Landfill”. By replacing the regular grass cover on the finished landfill areas with pollinator cover, the objective is to encourage bees in order to help protect their numbers. This initiative came through the City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee and many other municipalities are very interested in the outcome.

Taylor also reviewed some of Councils Core decisions. In total, 49 reviews were completed. A few of these decisions include reducing Council to eight representatives in eight wards, implementing Internet and phone voting options for the 2018 election process, approval of an additional $10M for Capital projects in 2017 as well as an extra 40% increase in gravel resurfacing. Many initiatives in the Core Services process were assessed so they would become “right sized”.

Further highlights of the Core Services include consolidating municipal service centres and libraries, discontinuing the Bobcaygeon Trailer Park after 2017 season and completing the Planning Approvals Task Force which includes actions that will improve planning processes.

City-wide burn ban

As is usual practice at this time of year, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service will be imposing a burn ban in effect on Saturday April 1, 2017.

As in the past, the ban will be in place for the entire month. Residents will be informed when the ban is lifted.

Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst says, “Grass fires place our residents and firefighters in unnecessary danger. The April burn ban helps reduce the risks and unnecessary costs associated with these fires.”

Trent Lakes Council Notes

Several items were discussed recently at Trent Lakes Council.

Remuneration The remuneration review recommendation of increasing the Mayor’s salary will not be implemented in 2017. Council decided to revisit an amended salary report from staff in 2018 for the new incoming council and mayor.

PAD Program Review

Public access to defibrillators in Trent Lakes could be in jeopardy. In 2014 the Heart and Stroke Foundation stopped funding the Public Access Defibrillation Program. Since that time Peterborough Paramedics have been contracted to maintain the machines in the county, including the 10 defibrillators in the Municipality. The future of the program depends on whether the County and municipalities are willing to spend money to replace the many aging machines at a cost of $2,500 each or scrap the program.

Fireworks Bylaw

Council said ‘no’ to creating a new fireworks bylaw.

Last summer people complained to the municipality that fireworks were being used excessively around the lakes. Instead of creating a new, difficult-toenforce bylaw, Council will use cottage and ratepayer associations to remind residents of existing noise bylaws and fire bans.

RECYCLING UP – CLEAR BAGS A MUST

A ‘good news’ story is always welcome. Writing a ‘good news’ story about garbage is not a common occurrence.

Across the region, municipalities have instituted a Clear Bag policy at their transfer stations and landfill sites, requiring residents and visitors to use clear bags

for their garbage. That move seems to be taking a lot of recyclables out of the trash.

These ‘clear’ garbage bag programs have already proven successful, despite the moaning of a few naysayers.

In January 2017 in Trent Lakes there was a decrease of garbage by 21 tonnes. In February that figure increased to 30 tonnes. In the same period, recycling increased by 7 tonnes.

In the City of Kawartha Lakes, officials say that during the first month of the program, residents recycled 20 percent more than the previous year.

When all is said and done, this makes the waste management costs for any municipality decline because handling garbage is a huge cost.

Organic waste is another major garbage factor.

Many people have backyard composters. For those who don’t, in Trent Lakes at least, you can take organic waste to the Buckhorn transfer station for collection.

As yet, CKL does not offer organics composting to its residents but you can purchase composters from both municipalities.

There’s not much that can’t be composted except, of course, plastic. Even so-called biodegradable and compostable plastics are not accepted in municipal composting programs. There is a helpful list of compostable materials on the Municipality website – www.trentlakes.ca.

There are many good reasons to pay attention to the use and recycling of plastics. Plastics are a great threat to the health of the Earth.

Recently, the United Nations started the Clean Seas campaign to try to rid the oceans and seas of some 5 trillion pieces of plastic. Marine litter in plastic alone amounts to 8 million tonnes annually or one garbage truck load every minute dumped into the seas.

Happy Easter EASTER HISTORY

Easter is perhaps the most important of Christian holidays. Celebrating Christ’s resurrection from the dead following his death on Good Friday, his rebirth symbolizes the arrival of light and awakening of life around us.

Easter Sunday also represents the end of Lent, a 40-day period of reflection and penance. The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday which commemorates Jesus’ last

supper with his disciples; Good Friday, honouring the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection.

Easter has been called a moveable feast because it doesn’t fall on a set date every year, as most holidays do. Instead, Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year.

Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar to calculate when Easter will occur and typically celebrate the holiday a week or two after the Western churches, which follow the Gregorian calendar.

So where, in all of this, do the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs come into play? Here’s one theory: Feeling guilty about arriving late one spring, the Germanic Goddess Ostara saved the life of a poor bird whose wings had been frozen by the snow and made him her pet. Filled with compassion for him since he could no longer fly (in some versions, it was because

she wished to amuse a group of young children), Ostara turned him into a snow hare and gave him the gift of being able to run with incredible speed so he could protect himself from hunters.

In remembrance of his earlier form as a bird, she also gave him the ability to lay eggs (in all the colors of the rainbow, no less), but only on one day each year.

As is common in mythology, eventually the hare did something to anger the Goddess Ostara. She cast him into the skies where he would remain forever. She did, however, allow him to return to earth once a year, but only to give his eggs to the children attending the Ostara festival each spring.

While Easter may be more of a religious celebration for some, children (and some adults) look forward to a traditional Easter egg hunt and the inevitable chocolate bunnies left by our furry friend.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day on April 22 is “EarthPLAY”, according to Earth Day Canada.

Celebrations across the country are highlighting our great outdoors.

Locally, there are some wonderful “Earth Day“ events to enjoy on April 22.

Earth Day Celebrations – Fenelon Falls

Join the City’s Environmental Advisory Committee’s celebration at Russ Baptiste Ball Park. You can help plant a mini forest, take pictures in the special Earth Day photo booth, and enjoy some music. Those who bring their reusable mug can get a free organic fair trade coffee. It’s rain or shine and runs from 10 until 2pm.

Gamiing Nature Centre

The Centre will be open from 11 am to 4 pm with fun and educational activities for the whole family.

11am - Petting Zoo - Little Country Critters: Donkeys, sheep, goats, mini-pigs, rabbits and more with Amy Elliott.

12:30pm - Smudging with Alf Bowser 2pm - The Paddling Puppeteers: A variety of colourful puppets bring to life many stories about the environment. The shows present ideas of how we can take simple steps to preserve and restore Canada’s natural heritage.

Everyone who attends Earth Day at Gamiing has an opportunity to make a Green Pledge for the year that could be put on display at the Centre for the day.

St. James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls will host a community conversation about climate change on Thursday, April 20 at 7 pm.

The evening will include a speaker, a short film and time for conversation about what you know about the impact of climate change in our region, and what action we can take.

The leader of the discussion and the guest speaker will be Guy Hanchet, who lives in Lakefield. He is a climate reality leader trained by Al Gore, a member of the Citizens Climate Lobby and the chair of the Peterborough chapter of 4RG - For Our Grandchildren.

There will be also be a screening of a short film entitled “The Inescapable Before Us” that features narration by Canadians on the forefront of climate justice action.

Finally we don’t have to worry about the weather on Tuesday practice night. We have had several cancellations this year due to snow and freezing rain.

Some of the Snowbirds are back from the sunny south and it won’t be long before we have a full quota of singers.

Unfortunately we have lost another tenor but hopefully he will return after a leave of absence to get moved and settled in his new home.

Recently Bob was delayed in Toronto and Debbi Risebrough did the honours and stood up to the podium to direct the practice. She is one talented lady and did a great job. Thank you, Debbi.

With most of the music under our belts it is time for Sectional practices. The Sopranos and Altos worked hard when it was their evening. Going over parts of the songs that either they were not comfortable with yet or Bob felt they needed some help. The Tenors and Basses will have their turn in the next few weeks.

Our concert in May will be here before we know it and there is still plenty to do besides singing. Selecting the music to be performed and procuring a guest to take part in the concert, programs to be designed and printed, any necessary advertising to be seen to along with posters to be designed and distributed through out town and surrounding areas, decisions on dress code for the concert along with many numerous little tasks too many to mention.

Hold onto your gardening hats – here we grow! The Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society (BDHS) is ready to start the growing season of 2017.

* The swing bridge boxes will be removed on March 31, delivered to the greenhouse for planting and then returned before the May 20 long weekend. The new colour scheme of red and white will celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday.

* Also by the long weekend, all the special 150th birthday tulip bulbs that were planted last fall will have bloomed as well.

* The plants for the village gardens maintained by the BDHS have been ordered. Our faithful volunteers will be at work installing them in the following gardens: Trent Severn Locks, Need Street Triangles, Canal Road Corner (Hwy 36), Legion Beds, Service Centre and Shea Park, Bridge of Heroes’ planters, Settlers’ Village, Market Square and the Bolton Street Beds.

Our regular general meetings held every third Thursday of the month at Knox Presbyterian Church Hall continue as planned. So far we have had two very successful and interesting presenters.

VIMY RIDGE HEROES TO BE HONOURED

On April 9, 1917 during the First World War, Canadian soldiers showed the world bravery and sacrifice.

This year, it’s the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which to this day remains one of the most epic turning points in Canadian history. Four Canadian divisions fought together as a unified force for the first time.

The impressive show of force sent the German enemy in retreat. More than 10,500 Canadians were killed and wounded.

To underscore the sacrifices made by Canada, France gave Canada 107 hectares of land at Vimy to build and maintain a memorial. That iconic site is today considered one of the most stirring of all First World War monuments, and certainly Canada’s most important war memorial.

The members of the Bobcaygeon Legion will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge on April 8 and 9. On Saturday, April 8 at 2pm, there will be a presentation. Then on Sunday, April 9, there will be an Open House at the Legion at 2pm, followed at 3pm with a special commemorative ceremony. Both events are free to the public.

A VOLUNTEER’S PERSPECTIVE

Submitted by Ann Adare, Bobcaygeon I have to say that since joining the community of volunteers in Bobcaygeon I feel that I have gained so much from the experiences and interactions while meeting some pretty amazing people along the way.

As a cottager, prior to moving here full time, I have to admit I did not become involved in the community organizations here. I guess my feeling was that I was just here to relax and didn’t really have time.

What I didn’t realize is that volunteering can indeed be simple and relaxing. It is what you make of it. It can be as easy as picking up garbage while hiking the trails out on the Island or helping out at a one of the games at the Family Day weekend Frost Fest.

I was initially intimidated but soon realized, what I really already knew, that Bobcaygeon is a very welcoming town. Before I knew it, people were stopping me on the street to ask how the campaign was going or, to my surprise, just to say hello and chat.

I would encourage anyone new to the area to become involved by volunteering sooner rather than later. You will be amazed at how quickly you can find your niche. Staying connected to your group online makes it easy to continue to stay involved even when away from our wonderful little town. Cottager or fulltime resident there is a volunteer activity out there for everyone that will be truly life enriching.

For me, the most satisfying aspect of volunteering is the interaction with others and the bonds that are formed with fellow volunteers. Volunteering is my way of celebrating my gratitude for being able to live in Bobcaygeon.

As Canada celebrates 150 years this July 1st, we felt it only fitting to honour some great Canadians who have woven the fabric of our country. Neil Thomasson is our contributor for this series.

FARLEY & ME

When I was seven years old, I was hospitalized for a ruptured appendix. Not a fun few weeks: but that’s a story for another time. Before I was hospitalized, my mum was reading a book to me at bedtime each night, a chapter a night. No chapter the night of surgery.

That book became very important to me. It became the first real novel I read on my own. My mum read a chapter or two during visiting hours. That was not enough. She left it with me and I finished it.

The book was “Owls In The Family”. The author was Farley Mowat. I went on to read many more of his novels.

They were stories about Canadians -- young and old. They were growing up in urban communities, they were lost in the far north or they were fighting in

It’s Easy Being Green We have Reached Peak Stuff

Before I was at home with my kids, I ran a specialty cleaning business.

I had a truck and a trailer, I would remove furniture and other household stuff, and then do a major clean up of appliances, windows, walls, carpets, etc. Most of my business was estate sales, foreclosures, and real estate turnovers, and the occasional basement/storage room organization and clean out. I also did commercial and residential housekeeping. Through all of this, I witnessed a lot of waste -- an EXCESSIVE amount of waste!

At estate clean outs, after the family had chosen what they wanted, I would find cupboards full of cooking appliances and specialty dishware that hadn’t been used in years, some even new and never opened.

At foreclosures and rental turnovers, good, useful and often new things no longer appreciated by the previous tenant/owner were left behind to be thrown in the trash. Piles of kid’s toys left to rot outside -- some good, some broken because of the cheap quality -never to be appreciated by a child because, by the looks of it, there were plenty of other toys to choose from.

When I helped people clean out storage areas, I witnessed an attachment to things with no sentimental value, things that had been in storage untouched, forgotten and still not to be used for years, stuck in the box and onto the shelf for many more years to come.

I was a regular at the landfill, and the local donation centres, often bringing full trailer loads to both. I saw over and over again those possessions that sat in storage for so long that they were no longer good for anybody else to use. At the opposite end of that, the lack of care for the things people had, and the lowquality things that didn’t last long only to end up in the landfill.

I realised then that we have a ‘things’ problem.

One to which, I vowed, I would no longer contribute.

I started to rethink the way I bought things, the reason for buying those things, the things I had, the way I appreciated my things, and my connection to things -- or lack thereof.

Science says that when we shop, we get a hit of the naturally occurring pleasure drug to our brains. But it quickly fades and we want to shop again to get that same feeling. Science also says we can get that same pleasure from spending time in nature, from helping others, and from exercise.

The more you know, the less you need.

Medical Travel – An Underused Credit?

Considering the large, under-serviced area we live in, medical travel is a fact of life. Let’s face it, this area doesn’t always have specialists available and close to home.

But if you have to travel 40 km (one way), you can claim the cost of travel expenses such as public transit or vehicle expenses on your income taxes.

To claim these, there must not be “substantially equivalent medical services” near you, you must take a direct route – no side trips - and it must be medically necessary for you to seen by this practitioner.

To use the detailed method, keep receipts and records for your travel expenses. Or use a simplified method by calculating your km expenses on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) km rate - for 2016 in Ontario that rate is $.54 per km. Remember to record that on the round trip km.

Meal expenses are allowed for longer trips.

Again, either keep the receipt, or you use a flat meal rate set by CRA for 2016 at $17 per meal. To claim accommodations or parking, you must have the receipts.

CRA SHUTS DOWN WEBSITE

It’s that time of year when the Canada Revenue Agency’s website gets a ton of traffic as people e-file their taxes.

Unfortunately, it’s also the time when hackers try to have their way with the online functions. In March, the CRA shut down their website to install further security measures.

They say no personal information was accessed and that all is now well.

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased to announce their new logo and website (www.KawarthaLakesDoctors.org). KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).

“Working with local design company, Colour & Code, has been a great partnership in the redevelopment of KLHCI’s logo and website,” said Dan Joyce, KLHCI Marketing Committee Chairperson.

KLHCI’s new website contains information for potential family doctor recruits, current family doctors, and medical learners. Additionally, there is information for CKL community members such as how to find a family doctor, locations and hours of after-hours clinics, and the programs that KLHCI uses to recruit and retain family doctors for CKL.

The KLHCI Board of Directors has representation from throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. The board is interested in adding new members. Being a member of KLHCI’s Board of Directors is an excellent opportunity to volunteer and be part of this vital component of our community health care, the recruitment and retention of family doctors.

Daffodil packs a punch

This April, the Canadian Cancer Society marks its 60th Daffodil Month by rallying Canadians to show their support for people living with cancer and honour those who have died by wearing a daffodil pin or buying fresh daffodils. Money raised through flower and pin sales during Daffodil Month funds critical cancer research, education and advocacy initiatives as well as compassionate support programs across the country.

SELECTIVE SOUND SENSITIVITY SYNDROME

The alliterative term “selective sound sensitivity syndrome” (or “misophonia”) is used to describe a condition whereby a person experiences an intense emotional reaction to a specific sound. It may be a constant tapping of a foot on the floor or a pencil against a desk surface that causes a misophonic individual to fly into a rage. The word “misophonic” literally means “hatred of sound.”

This disorder is not caused by hearing impairment and is not the same as “hypercusis” (oversensitivity to the volume of sounds), but it is certainly worth noting. The sensitivity to certain sounds elicits extremely negative and immediate emotional and physiological responses that can significantly alter sufferers’ lives and their interactions with others.

Think the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard is unpleasant? This is a mild example of what people with misophonia experience when exposed to a trigger sound. In some cases, a person with misophonia can become socially isolated and pull back from family and friends in an attempt to reduce the associated physical symptoms that they experience when triggered.

For United Way and many of its funded agencies, the measurement of success has evolved. Success is not just about the numbers of people served, “it is about the sense of community, community connections, building relationships and the fact that a program comes to a rural community,” says Kim White, Early Learning Program Manager for the Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC).

“There are lots of successes for agencies and the focus is to deliver programs that change people’s lives, enhance their knowledge, build an individual’s confidence and/or alter living or health outcomes. As an example the OEYC’s reach into rural communities can have benefits for participants, but also other partners. Sometimes the back story is part of the success story,” says, Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director for UWCKL. For 16 years, the OEYC brought outreach programs to Bobcaygeon that were customized around children 0-6. These programs have offered opportunities for children, their parents and grandparents and include diverse learning through: interactive circle and story time; play that strengthens social, emotional and physical skills; and parenting supports.

“We exploded the first week with 12 adults and 20 children attending! The Henderson House room was tight, so the following week we set up inside, on the porch and out on the lawn. Everyone loved this location, it was a win/win environment…until the cold weather came. We knew that with our numbers we would never be able to squeeze everyone into the room in Henderson House. We didn’t want to lose the momentum of this program, so the search for a winter location became top priority,” says Pippa Stephenson, executive director of OEYC. Success continues for this agency as it has forged another partnership with Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes in Bobcaygeon. Now an exciting intergenerational program is underway with benefits for seniors, grandparents, parents, caregivers and of course children. For this winter venue the Sunshine room and now the Piano room at the Retirement Suites is a welcoming setting. This has been a great winter location for the program. The intention is to return to Kawartha Settlers’ Village once the warm spring weather is upon us.

OEYC has received funding for several decades from UWCKL. Since 2001, it has received over $235,000 from UWCKL for its rural outreach programs across the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and at its main office in Lindsay.

GET TO ROOT OF PROBLEM

As healthy eating costs continue to rise in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes, public health officials say a major rethink is needed on how to help local families make ends meet.

“Right now, social assistance benefits and income from minimum-wage jobs are not keeping pace with the higher costs of living, meaning people must choose between paying for food or rent,” says Rosie Kadwell, a Registered Dietitian with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “It’s time to look at bold, new approaches to ending poverty and ensuring people can access the nutritious food and other basics they need.”

For Kadwell, this means increasing minimum wages and social assistance rates to “a reasonable, realistic amount” that ensures local families will no longer be forced to choose between putting healthy food on the table or having a roof over their heads.

The HKPR District Health Unit recently reported the cost of a Nutritious Food Basket in 2016 for a

local family of four (two adults, a teenager and child) rose to $204.66 per week. The Nutritious Food Basket consists of 67 food items that are nutritious and commonly purchased by Ontarians; items excluded are other essentials like soap, toilet paper, toothpaste and personal care products. By Health Unit estimates, the cost of healthy eating has increased nearly $34 per week since 2011 for an average family of four living in Haliburton County, the City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County.

Food insecurity – the inability to access food due to financial challenges – is a serious public health problem in Canada that negatively affects people’s physical, mental, and social health. According to the Health Unit, more than one in 10 people in Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland are considered ‘food insecure.’

In coming months, the provincial government will launch a pilot program to test out the Basic Income Guarantee in select Ontario communities. The Basic Income Guarantee – a proposal that has been endorsed by the Health Unit’s Board of Health – is one possible solution to the problem of food insecurity. The Basic Income Guarantee would see the government ‘guarantee’ all individuals or families, regardless of their work status, a minimum level of annual income.

Anyone earning below this minimum annual income would receive government funding to make up the difference.

“We’re really eager to see the results of the pilot project, because the Basic Income Guarantee could be one viable way to solve the problem of food insecurity in our community,” Kadwell adds.

WELL, WELL, WELL

For those of us who get our drinking water from a drilled or dug well, now is a good time to test the water.

After the spring melt and rainfall, the increased amount of surface water and high groundwater could lead to higher levels of those unwanted bacteria.

Testing your water is free through the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit or Peterborough Health Unit. You can pick up a testing kit at your local municipality office, then drop off the samples at the health unit. They are sent to a provincial lab for testing for Total Coliform or E. coli.

Total Coliform Coliform bacteria are present in animal wastes, but are also found in soil and vegetation that may mean that rainwater and run-off is getting into your well. The well cap should be inspected to ensure that it is secure and in good repair.

E. coli E. coli bacteria are only found in the intestinal contents of all animals, including birds and humans.

The presence of E. coli bacteria in your well indicates that there is some fecal contamination that may cause disease. E. coli levels should always be zero.

Smucker Foods of Canada Corp. is recalling Robin Hood brand All Purpose Flour, Original from the marketplace due to possible E. coli O121 contamination.

We’re advised to not use or eat any Robin Hood All Purpose Flour, Original sold in 10 kilogram bags with a code containing BB/MA 2018 AL 17 and 6 291 548.

The Public Health Agency Canada says there are 25 cases of E. coli O121 across Canada linked to the product. Six people were hospitalized as a result, but all have recovered.

If you have unmarked flour, and are unsure of whether or not it is affected by the recall, Health Canada recommends throwing it out just in case.

They say food contaminated by E. coli doesn’t look spoiled, but it can still make you sick. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. If you think you have become sick, CFIA advises you to call your doctor immediately.

PUTTING THE ‘FUN’ IN FUNDRAISER

The Kiwanis Club of Scott’s Pains has a unique fundraiser coming up to help out Hospice Peterborough.

There’s a progressive euchre tournament on April 9 and April 16 at 1pm in the lounge of Delta Bingo and Gaming on Clonsilla Avenue in Peterboroough.

The entry fee is $10, then $2 for Lone Hands. Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Lone Hands. There’s also an optional 50/50 draw.

The club has pledged $12,500 to purchase equipment and furnishings for the new Hospice Peterborough Paediatric Room for youth and families.

Your participation in the tournament will help fund that pledge.

The 37th Annual Canada/US Walleye Tournament is quickly approaching. At 37 years it is Ontario’s longest-running live-release walleye event.

This sold-out tournament of 280 anglers brings many visitors to the area, adding greatly to the economy.

Many come up with their families the week before the tournament to prefish. They eat at our restaurants and shop in our stores.

Like all such community events, this Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce endeavour is successful because of its volunteers. Our “Green Team” of volunteers, as we call them, range from teenagers to adults, males and females. Without volunteers an enormous function such as this cannot take place.

The week of the Tournament we need assistance with setting up the arena. After the event we need assistance to “tear down.” And during the 3 days we need volunteers to give us one or two shifts of 4 hours of their time.

This is a reminder to those who have held it together year after year and an invitation to others to join us for the first time.

On Wednesday, April 12 at 7 pm at the Bobcaygeon Municipal Centre (across from the Legion), we are having a Meet and Greet session for previous and potential volunteers. Light refreshments will be served.

Please come to our meeting to show your support for Bobcaygeon and the area. A great place to Live, Play and Volunteer!
