OVER THE BACK FENCE
I’m being too hard on the kids. We ran and played, wrote and read, sang songs and even had sports in gym. I think I turned out okay. I don’t blame the teachers, parents or schoolboards in particular. I think as a society, we need to band together to give the kids a better start at life. When a teenager can’t read or write, I wonder what’s going on.
I’d like to step into the time machine, Mr. Peabody. Let’s go back to “the olden days” where our teachers in school would give us the tools to be able to communicate with others and work as a team. ARCHERY SILVER
For the third year in a row, Clara-Ann Woolsey, a lifelong cottager of Bobcaygeon, went to the 3D Archery National Championships and came home with the silver medal in the Ladies Cadet class. This year’s competition was a three-day event, walking 27 kilometres and shooting 80 targets, in Truro, Nova Scotia. Clara-Ann shot a 634 out of a possible 880. At the end of the competition, they do a Grand Prix, which is taking the top four shooters from two classes – i.e., Lady Cadets versus Lady Hunters – for a shoot-off. With one of the Cadets dropping out, Clara-

Ann was one of seven shooting for the bullseye. She came in 3rd place. Clara-Ann truly values the time she spends with her father, who also shoots. They spend almost every weekend from spring until Fall going to different tournaments across Ontario. Through the week, Clara-Ann is a dedicated volunteer at Kawartha Settlers’ Village and works parttime at Embers in the ice cream/takeout section as well as doing some babysitting. Way to go Clara-Ann and congratulations!

GOOD NEWS
This is a good news story about our health care system and specifically the Ontario Central East Local Health Network. During the final weeks of my wife Rosemarie’s battle with bone cancer, she required more and more medical and nursing care. NP Linda Ready, from our City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, the Paramed Nursing staff, Kawartha Therapy Services, and, at the end, the Palliative Nurses were on call for us, 24/7. We required a hospital bed and Medigas from Lindsay had it delivered within 4 hours of the request. To make it short, to all your wonderful caring, special people, a huge Thank You. You helped our Mom and family through a very difficult time in our life. Werner Ellinger and family, Bobcaygeon

Beach park Safety
I am unaware of how much background information our current councillors and the landscape architects who have been hired to come up with a master plan for our beach park have at hand. However, if memory serves me right, it was back in the late 80s or early 90s that the then Bobcaygeon council voted “no” to the installation of a planned large docking area at the other end of the park. One of the main reasons for that decision was because of the close proximity to the water treatment plant and the water intake pipe. If the docking was to go ahead as per the current plan, it would be several yards closer still. Further to Mr. Peter Conquergood’s letter to the editor printed in the July 12 issue of Kawartha Lakes This Week, I, too, question how this increased boat traffic will affect the quality of the swimming area and the safety of children. I feel very strongly that increased boat traffic will lead to a greater chance of personal injury to the swimmers as well as more garbage, gas and oil floating into the swimming area. I also believe it would make more sense to have the parking for the beach much closer to the swimming area or we will find that many of the beach users will park on the street as was the case several years ago before off-street parking was provided just beside the current work shed. The other question for which I have been unable to obtain an answer is: “Why do they feel the need for a double launching pad when this will only increase the cost of the redevelopment?” I have lived for several years overlooking the launching area of the current park and, except for a couple of times a year (i.e., Fishing Derby and very early spring when the watercraft that have been repaired during the winter months are tested), I don’t believe I have ever witnessed a wait time of more than 10 or 15 minutes for a boater to get their boat in or out of the water. I certainly do not see where providing additional docking space will increase the use of the launching pad. Trish Dunkley-Johns, Bobcaygeon

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE sponsored by
Stewart Morrison Insurance
RV SHARE/RENTAL INSURANCE
Have you thought about renting out your RV on a site like outdoorsy.com? You are not alone. This is the hottest trend in the “homeshare/ride-share” market. However, it is just as important to make sure you are properly insured; and it might surprise you to know that your standard RV insurance policy doesn’t usually cover commercial or forprofit use. With an easy call to your broker, or us here at Stewart Morrison Insurance, we can ensure that your trailer, its contents and you are covered should anything happen.
Why its important to go through a proper RV Sharing company like outdoorsy.com: Because they will vet your potential renters, making sure you are handing over your RV to a fully licensed driver with a clean diving history. No one wants a loss to happen, but working with a company that can check your renters before they hit the open road, allows you to be covered for whatever may happen while your RV is out of your care. The insurance policy you have on your RV works with the coverage extended to AGENT you through the RV Sharing company. For example: outdoorsy.com provides actual cash value should a full loss occur, however GENT if your current RV policy covers you for replacement costs - that will be honoured, 30 Y ears or your policy will pay the difference. But not if you’ve rented your RV independent of a RV Sharing company. 0 Y ears On top of these important reasons, RV Share coverage includes $2 million third party liability and comprehensive & collision insurance. Everything you need to make sure your investment in your RV is protected, and that your renters find the adventure they are looking for. Let’s talk RV rental insurance or anything else you need!

City Hall
By Kirk Winter
The August 14 City Council meeting was a marathon in very crowded council chambers. One of the last meetings before electioneering truly starts after Labour Day, dealt with a series of contentious issues including the City response to short-term rentals. Youth and Young Adult Strategies Staff from the Economic Development Department presented to Council their findings regarding what would have to be done to attract, retain, and engage young people to move to, and stay in, the CKL. The City demographically has a disproportionately high number of citizens over the age of 65. Only 24 percent of the CKL population is under 39 years of age, while the provincial average is 32 percent. A survey was posted online, a focus group met in early July, and stakeholders like VCCS, the Boys and Girls Club, the BIA and local Chambers of Commerce were consulted. Five key factors were determined to attract and keep young people in the CKL including meaningful employment opportunities, a varied and vibrant entertainment and cultural scene, affordable housing, improved public transit and a public rebranding of the CKL that will make it an attractive destination for people under the age of 40. Fenelon Falls Seniors’ Park Penni Holdham, representing seniors’ groups from Fenelon Falls, requested that the City enter into a land use agreement with her group to build a Seniors’ Park in that community. The group needed the land use agreement to move forward with their Trillium Grant application later this fall. Holdham presented that currently more than 50

percent of the population of Fenelon Falls is over the age of 65, and there is a pressing need for an outdoor recreation space in the community tailored exclusively to the needs of seniors. The goal of the park would be to give seniors the opportunity to work on mobility, flexibility, agility and balance in a safe and well lit outdoor facility. Studies from Europe show that 30 minutes of outdoor activity three times a week significantly contributes to a senior`s quality of life. This park would be the first of its kind in Canada, and Holdham believes there is the possibility that the model could be replicated right across the City. Staff is supportive of the idea, and council voted unanimously to partner in a land usage agreement with the group hopeful that Holdham’s group will be successful in their grant request. Short-term rentals Raymonde Blais-Couture, President of the McGuire Beach Cottage Association in the new Ward One, made an impassioned presentation to council about the impact of short-term rentals on her lakefront community. Blais-Couture detailed with specific examples the overcrowded cottages with septics straining to support 20 or more overnight guests, the noise, the public drunkenness, the dangerous operation of vehicles and boats at all hours of the evening, the theft of firewood, public nudity, dangerous bonfires even during a time of burn bans and the damage done to cottage association beaches and docks. Raymonde fears an intoxicated
renter will die, and where the liability for that death will lie. Blais-Couture requested that the City shelve its current plans for dealing with short-term rentals and further consult with those most affected by this type of property usage. What was most concerning to BlaisCouture was the “lack of City response” on Friday and Saturday evenings when the majority of these problems occur. From experience, frustrated cottage owners have discovered that no City by-law staff work evenings onrthe weekends, and apparently both the OPP and Fire Department have been “less than responsive” to home owners’ requests for assistance. Blais-Couture said cottage association presidents like her receive the bulk of the phone calls from concerned cottage owners wondering how to handle the events that are going on at the short-term rental next door. Blais-Couture concluded her presentation stating that similar problems have been shared with her by cottage associations on Mitchell Lake, Balsam Lake,

Lake Dalrymple and Canal Lake. Blais-Couture’s deputation sparked the better part of 90 minutes worth of debate among the councillors who questioned whether the CKL was dealing with this situation effectively enough. The City plan presented to Council at this session called for more data to be gathered on the size of the problem, a better enforcement of by-laws that are currently on the books, and a new fine structure to be put in place for both the rental property owner and the renters. A wide ranging discussion touched on issues as diverse as zoning changes, the licensing and inspections of short-term rentals, and the need for the City to get better cooperation from the OPP who “refuse to share their data” on the calls answered by their officers on weekends when City staff is not available. There was also a robust conversation about hiring additional by-law enforcement staff to not only register but also inspect and go out to shortterm rentals to deal with “crises in the making.” In a recorded vote, the City plan was passed 14-3 with Councillors Stauble, Dunn and Junkin opposing. The City has promised that they will continue to consult with those affected, and did not rule out the licensing of short-term rentals in the future if new staffing was approved in the 2019 budget.

Wood as art
By Doug Hodgins
‘Whittling’ is something one could do sitting on the bank of a river with a stick and pocket knife. Wood sculpturing is a sophisticated art-form enjoyed by thousands of men, women and children. Their ‘stick’ is a specially prepared piece of basswood, butternut, pine, tupelo or cherry and rather than a pocket knife, they carve with specialized knives, chisels and power tools. Some creations are painted and some are left with a
natural finish. Regardless, the results are amazing. Most wood carvers enjoy this as a satisfying hobby. Some carve or teach professionally and compete at very high levels for five -igure prize money. Mostly, it is the joy of spending some time each week with like-minded folks in one of several Wood Carving Clubs here in the Kawarthas or elsewhere. Each year, on the second Saturday in September wood carvers from all across Ontario converge on Bobcaygeon to participate in the Kawartha Carving Competition and Show. Here, they compete in judged events for cash awards, prize ribbons or just satisfaction and bragging rights. There will be door prizes throughout the show, along with a silent auction. This year will be the 41st of the competition. There are typically 75 to 100 participants with up to 200 carvings on display. Some carvers may have some of their works for sale. There will be carving supply vendors also selling carving tools, wood and accessories. Visitors to the show enjoy getting up close to the creations, watching carving demonstrations, purchasing a wood sculpture or stocking up on carving supplies. The comment heard most often is “Oh, I could never do that”. Give it a try; you will surprise yourself. This year there will be a tribute display in memory of Bob Gill. Sadly, Bob passed this year. Bob was without a doubt a Master Carver from Lakefield. He was an inspiration, a great teacher and a good friend to many new carvers over the years and he is sadly missed. Join us on September 8 at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club.

Recently added to the list of events, the Spring Shindig gave the community a spring in their step. Now, new this Fall, the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce will host yet another fun seasonal event! Originating in Munich, Germany, the traditional Oktoberfest is known as the largest Volksfest (carnival) in the world, and now a little piece of it will be in Coboconk! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Many people lose precious time each day doing mindless activities that take away from tasks that need to be done. During this phase, Pisces, try to avoid procrastination. You will feel better when you experience a sense of accomplishment. Aries (March 21 to April 20) “Best be yourself, imperial, plain, and true.”: Robert Browning. How’s that for some fine advice, Aries? Forget about trying to impress others with a façade that is not YOU, and don’t be afraid to show the real YOU to the world.

It’s easier to try and change others than to change ourselves. But change must start with you, and you alone, Scorpio. Really, the only person you can change is yourself! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) You may have experienced a recent setback, Sagittarius, but don’t let this bring you down. Your time and your turn will come soon enough! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Trust your journey, Capricorn. What does this mean? It means that you must believe that what you are going through now will lead you down the right path to the right destination eventually. And when you get there, nothing will hold you back.

DOWN THAT ROAD
By Deb Crossen
Anyone who knows me knows I love live theatre. Not only do I personally act and direct in the BCC’s twice-yearly dinner theatre, but I enjoy a good night out seeing others ‘hit the boards.’ We are blessed to have professional theatre in Bobcaygeon at the Lakeview Arts Barn. Globus Theatre, run by actors, directors and writers, Sarah Quick and James Barrett, runs spring, summer and fall theatre, including a full-on Christmas pantomime. Next up to cap off their summer schedule is the romantic comedy, Sugar Road. Written by Canadian playwright Kristen Da Silva, the play takes place in a small town (which could easily be Bobcaygeon). Hannah Taylor (Tara Koehler) meets up with country music star Jesse Emberley (Jake Simons) when he returns to the amusement park, Sugar Road to participate in a country music festival. Hannah and Jesse spent a magical evening together 12 years earlier, but went separate ways. Now, Jesse’s a big star, but the
biggest thing on his mind is why he never heard from Hanna and how he can’t forget her. James as Ray Bishop and Sarah as Caroline Dawn round out the cast of characters. Sarah also directed the play. Jake and Sarah performed together in the world premiere of Sugar Road at Theatre Orangeville last year. Sarah wanted to bring it to audiences in Bobcaygeon as part of their summer series this year. The great thing for Tara and Jake, who come from Toronto and Guelph respectively, is the chance to work with James and Sarah. Jake said, “I don’t think Bobcaygeon realizes how lucky they are to have these two here.” Sugar Road runs from August 22 to September 1. Tickets are available for the performance only or dinner theatre. You can find out more at www.globustheatre. com. This is the 15th year that James and Sarah have been bringing plays to audiences at the Lakeview Arts Barn. We are indeed lucky to have them here. On Friday, August 10, Victoria Place Lawn Bowling Club visited Bobcaygeon Lawn Bowling Club for some Fun in the Sun. The teams were made up of participants from both clubs and two eight-end games were played followed by a BBQ lunch. With a picture perfect day, fun was had by all. CHORISTERS’ CORNER
SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS
By April Scott
Submitted by Susan Taylor
The Choristers have finally returned to practice. With an upcoming concert with the Reunion Choir in September, it was time to refresh ourselves with our last concert’s music. A few people are still on vacation but we were pleased to welcome a new member into the Bass section and word has it that there is the possibility of recruiting a new tenor. We started the practice with our usual round of Happy Birthdays to the folks we missed over the summer break. We were pleased to once again see Barb Dunleavey and she joined us after the break to sing along with us. She also presented us with a certificate from the Legion with recognition from them to the Choristers in the early days of the Choristers. Barb had the initial dream of a choir and eventually made it happen. We thank you, Barb, for starting the Bobcaygeon Choristers. There was a small summer get-together last week, the weather was perfect and as usual the food was delicious. We sat down by the lake and got caught up on everyone’s news. I guess that is it until the next time. We are, of course, still looking for new voices. Please call 705-738-2396 if you are interested. We heard about the new Christmas music and it sounds as though it will a lot of fun. Enjoy the rest of the summer and try and keep cool.
In the lead up to our 2018 Municipal Election this October, the Kawartha Lakes Arts Council is relaunching ArtsVote, working with Kawartha Lakes Heritage Network, and shining the light on the cultural sector once again. We want to elect candidates who support our cultural sector and who believe that long-term investment in the culture of the Kawartha Lakes is vital to our economic and social growth. We are inviting all the candidates seeking office to visit the ArtsVote website, be educated about the issues and consider our solutions. All candidates’ answers will be posted up to September 6, 2018 on the Kawartha Lakes Arts Council’s website. We also want to hear from the community. All responses from candidates and community members will be posted at www.kawarthalakesartscouncil. com/artsvote for public viewing.

The Fenelon Fairgrounds is the place to be on Labour Day Weekend, as the 29th edition of the Kawartha Arts Festival gets underway. A fresh new layout of the grounds promises to enhance the experience for visitors and exhibitors alike. This juried show features over 100 artists, with 30 new exhibitors from across the spectrum rounding out the outstanding array of artists who return year after year. Here are just a few of the talented artists: • Tom Bramhil: Tom, who calls Bancroft home, is a landscape artist whose current works are based on the unique theme he calls “From The Road: The countryside as viewed while driving past”. Visit his website: www.tombramhill.com • Clive Kay: Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Clive now lives in the Kawarthas, but the African influence is evident in his work, which is defined by everyday themes and vivid colours. Check out www.clivekayartist.com. • Robert Chisholm: Robert is noted for his impressionistic, intuitive style that allows the painting to evolve. Born in Nova Scotia, his east coast influence emerges in his landscapes and portraits. This awardwinning artist works mainly in acrylic and oils. • Bella Grey: Bella is a jewellery artist, and her pieces are the result of creative play and positive vision, merging with a love of colour, design and nature. She uses naturally shaped Georgian Bay beach stones as her canvas to create pendants, necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

• Deb Grisé: Deb is known for her impressionist and abstracted landscapes in oil, with light and colour her inspiration. In addition to her paintings, Deb will also present her art on fabric, with a display of items such as table linens with her original artwork on them. • Gail McFadden: Gail’s favourite medium is oil, but she also uses acrylics. She mostly paints rural landscapes, and loves to paint old cars, trucks, tractors, and country scenes. She loves being able to create realistic scenes which capture the serenity and peace of the rural countryside which she loves so much. • Dagmar Pinney: Working with watercolours and acrylics has brought out a passion in Dagmar since she started painting seriously in 2002. Since then, she has had the opportunity to study under other artists and continues to develop a style of her own. Following up on the massive success of last year’s Canada 150-themed Textile Art exhibits, Festival organizer Maud Skoog is pleased to announce there will be a larger Textile Artists tent this year, with even more exhibitors. The Kawartha Arts Festival runs Saturday, September 1 from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, September 2 from 10am to 4pm, with indoor and outdoor displays, a food concession and live music by North Country Express. This fully accessible event boasts free admission, free parking and a free shuttle from downtown, near the locks. KINMOUNT FAIR
For 147 years, the Kinmount Fair has been a tradition in the Kawarthas. This year’s event takes place from August 31 until September 2 at the Kinmount Fairgrounds. In addition to the standard demolition derby, truck and tractor pull, livestock shows and midway, there are some special activities planned for this year, icluding Soper Creek Animal Rescue’s Wildlife Rescue Station, where children can bring their stuffed animals to learn how to wrap a broken arm; and comedy Hypnotist Fernandez will perform several times over the weekend in The Valley. Entertainment includes Next Generation Leahy at the Grandstand on Saturday at 2pm, Ambush playing the Saturday night dance as well as a Friday night video dance in the Arena. The official opening ceremony is Saturday, September 1 at 1pm in the Grandstand. Again this year, World’s Finest Shows are offering a truly fantastic online deal. You can purchase a Mega pass bracelet for $28 that allows one person unlimited access to rides on any one day of the Fair. To get this deal, you need to purchase it on or before Thursday, August 30. The Mega Pass will also be available for purchase
at the fairgrounds on Friday, August 31 only at a cost of $35. For purchase, visit www.worldsfinestshows.com. Admission to the Fair is $12 for adults, all children 12 and under are admitted for free. It’s $6 for cars, $32 for a weekend pass as well as $10 for the Friday video dance and $15 for the Saturday dance. Honouring One Room Schools Every year at the Fair, the Kinmount Pioneer Society features an aspect of local history. This year the Society is honouring one room, rural schools. There were an estimated 185 one-room school houses established in our area (Victoria, Haliburton and northwest Peterborough Counties) in pioneer times. The Society has been diligently pursuing photos of all these legendary schools as well as facts and stories about the students who attended them and the teachers who taught there. This Heritage Display will also feature a mock school room with real lessons (cursive writing!), pioneer children’s games and historical displays. There might be a few stories told as well! They are still collecting photos and stories, so feel free to add to the narrative! Don’t miss this glimpse into Canadian History from an educational view point.

Health & Wellness EXPRESSING GRATITUDE THROUGH ACUPRESSURE
By Jennifer Bacon
You don’t always need a tough sweaty workout session to get fit and feel good. There are many ways you can invite movement and ease into your body in gentler, more subtle ways. Acupressure is a great way to encourage blood circulation in your hands, relax your body and mind, and best of all, it just feels great. Besides feeling terrific, this acupressure hand movement exercise is designed to stimulate energy lines, or meridians, found in the hands and connecting to various organs in the body. To start the exercise, begin to observe your palms. How do they feel? What colour are they? Take a moment of gratitude and appreciation for your hands
SOUND INTENSITY
Excessive noise exposure is the most common cause of hearing loss. Intensity of sound is measured in “decibels” on a scale that ranges from the faintest sound that the human ear can detect (0 decibels) to the noise created by a rocket launch (180 decibels). Because the decibel scale is a logarithmic scale, which goes up in powers of ten, every increase of 10 decibels on the scale is equivalent to a 10-fold increase in sound intensity, which generally translates into a doubling in loudness. That means that a sound of 20 decibels is 10 times more intense than a sound of 10 decibels. So, an increase from 85 decibels (heavy traffic) to 95 decibels (motorcycle) may be more intense than you realize. The noise levels in many instances in our lives is enough to cause hearing to deteriorate, often without our being aware of it happening. Pilots, construction workers, rock musicians, even landscape artists wear ear protection while working. Do you spend lots of time in a noisy environment? Have you been experiencing hearing difficulties? There really isn’t any reason to wait any longer hoping the problem will go away, because it won’t. Take charge of your hearing—call LINDSAY EAR CLINIC to arrange a hearing test. P.S. Limit your exposure to sounds at or above 100 decibels to no more than 15 minutes, and limit sounds that are at or above 110 decibels to no more than 1 minute.
and everything they do for you on a daily basis. Next, make light fists with your hands and begin to tap the pinky sides of your hands together. Do this for 10 to 15 seconds and start to move to tapping the insides of the wrists together. Continue to work your way around the outside of the hands, tapping the outside of the hands, where the thumb and wrist meet. Now open up the left hand, palm facing up. Make a fist with the right hand and gently tap the fist between the first and second knuckle of the open left palm. Switch hands and repeat. Next, turn your hands so the backs of your hands are touching, and begin to tap the backs of the hands together. Gently tap the webs between the pointer finger and thumb together. Interlace your fingers and tap the webs between each finger. If this is not accessible to you, you can massage your fingers or explore slowly interlacing one finger at a time. The last step in the process is to slowly massage and rub your hands. If you like, place your hands on a part of your body that is presenting you with a challenge. Feel the healing energy of your hands working its way into your body. When you feel ready, slowly remove your hands. Do this as a stand alone practice or incorporate it as part of the warm up of your regular fitness routine. FOOD: TOO GOOD TO WASTE
Submitted by Dr. Rosana Salvaterra
My eyes are usually much bigger than my stomach. I can easily buy much more than my family can eat. Hence, I have been engaged in a lifelong battle with my vegetable crisper – disciplining myself to plan meals and buy only what I need, and then managing the perishables so that they are not forgotten. I constantly look to learn new ways to lengthen the storage lives of herbs and leafy greens once they come home with me. And I am not alone. In Canada, 47 percent of food produced is thrown out at home -- uneaten leftovers, untouched fruits and vegetables, food that’s “bought and forgot.” There’s a public health side to reducing food waste. Having a plan to purchase fruits and vegetables so that meals are prepared at home, from nutritious ingredients, reduces the amount of quickserve meals, frozen dinners and take-out consumed. This ensures you and your family are getting more vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein and healthy fats and less fried foods, added sugar and salt. Eating meals together, and including children in the planning and preparation of those meals is mental health promotion, as well as great preparations for the next generation to learn important life and food literacy skills. Preparing our own meals at home also costs less. Food waste is bad for the health of our planet as well. There are serious environmental consequences
to sending food (and also organic materials) to landfill because they directly contribute to climate change by producing methane gas. Home composting is a great alternative to throwing food in the garbage. There are also municipal strategies such as green bin pick-up for organics, the switch to using clear bags and the composting systems available at some local transfer stations. Dr. Rosana Salvaterra is Medical Officer of Health for Peterborough Public Health

in rural wards reinvested there, rather than spent in Lindsay. Leslie Mieszkowski has spent his life in the automotive business, and currently operates a used car lot in the CKL. Mieszkowski is campaigning on a platform that includes improved rural transportation that will allow people to get to work at a reasonable cost. He suggests that Uber coming to the CKL might be a good start at solving this problem. Stephen Slack is a former IBM senior manager who retired to Bobcaygeon eight years ago. Slack is putting forward a platform that emphasizes balanced growth for the CKL. Slack wants to see growth that will bring prosperity to the region balanced with protecting the natural beauty that the region has to offer. Slack is in favour of the current Strategic Plan for the CKL adopted by the sitting council, and believes that with a few tweaks and improvements it can be made even better. John Snider has owned and operated an automotive repair business in Bobcaygeon for the last 19 years. Snider believes that the City needs to somehow control its runaway debt, reduce property taxes and do something about our crumbling infrastructure, particularly the potholes found on our municipal roads. Snider wants to see a reduction in development fees to entice commercial and entrepreneurial development, and a Citizens Advocate department within City Hall to speed up approval for those who want to create jobs in the CKL. Kathleen Seymour-Fagan, a local restaurateur, is running for re-election to council in Ward 2. Seymour-Fagan is offering a platform that focuses on getting the Bobcaygeon Beach Park and Canal Street redevelopments right. She also wants to make upgrading roads and infrastructure a vital priority. Seymour-Fagan wants to see the City’s Strategic Plan implemented so that the finite resources municipal government has are used to the best effect in both the long and short term. Afe Helleman believes that rural alienation in a City structure that favours the urban areas is not accidental. Helleman believes that this rural-urban divide has been exacerbated by the Mayor and his policies. Helleman believes that approval for building permits needs to be sped up considerably to encourage growth and economic prosperity.
WARD THREE • Candidates: Doug Elmslie, Steve Clarke, Roger McInnis • Population centres: Glenarm, Rosedale, Fenelon Falls, Cameron and Cambray Elmslie is the incumbent councillor, while Clarke and McInnis are the challengers. Steve Clarke has been a barber in the CKL for the last 27 years. Clarke is campaigning on a platform firmly rooted in fiscal responsibility. Clarke wants to see an infrastructure plan put in place that ensures that the City’s bridges and roads are repaired and replaced in a timely and efficient manner over the next 25 years. Doug Elmslie, a councillor for the last 12 years, also has concerns about infrastructure. Elmslie believes

that road and bridge repair is a real issue moving forward, and believes that climate change in the future may adversely affect the engineering and construction costs of these projects. Roger McInnis is a local hardware store owner. His platform includes an emphasis on infrastructure, focusing on road improvement and maintenance. McInnis also wants to see wait times and red tape cut on the processing of building and development applications. WARD FOUR • Candidates: Andrew Veale, John Pollard, Ian Nicolson and George Davidson • Population centres: Argyle, Lorneville, Woodville, Manilla, Cresswell, Little Britain, Sonya, Valentia, Seagrave The race in Ward Four promises to be an interesting one, as two of the four declared candidates are sitting councillors. Andrew Veale is a local automotive executive and

sitting councillor, with deep roots in the Woodville community, having volunteered many hours to worthy causes in that community and area. Veale will be campaigning on a platform of job creation, infrastructure and growth for not only Ward 4, but the City as a whole. John Pollard is a retired business executive, and a sitting councillor. Pollard will be campaigning on a platform focusing on road repair and maintenance, job creation and limiting the increases in the municipal tax rate. Pollard believes the City has a viable plan with resources set aside to improve the quality of roads not just in Ward Four. Ian Nicolson has more than 30 years’ experience in operational and economic management, and will be campaigning on a platform focusing on attracting business to the CKL, limiting tax and water increases, and by-law reform. Nicolson believes that the City needs to attract businesses that will complement the existing community. George Davidson is a former councillor and businessman hoping to return to council for a second time. Davidson believes that three key challenges facing the City in the next four years are social housing, homeless people and conflicts with the Conservation Authority who in the eyes of some are limiting development in the City with what developers see as unnecessary red tape. WARD FIVE •C andidates: Derek Camphorst, Pat Dunn, Duncan Gallacher, John Hagarty •P opulation centre: Lindsay Duncan Gallacher is a master electrician employed at a local auto parts manufacturer. He is campaigning on a platform of balancing the budget, increasing employment in the City and getting the City prepared for the increased encroachment of the GTA, which is coming sooner than many think. Derek Camphorst is a skilled tradesman, business owner and commercial property landlord. Camphorst wants to see a City that is “open for business.” He would like to see a City where the smaller outlying communities are not being ignored and the lion’s share of money continues to be spent in Lindsay. 2 hour Pat Dunninstallation is the sitting councillor. A retired OPP No structural modifications officer and long-time community volunteer, Dunn also tosee your home wants to a City that is preparing for future growth, making sure that the City manages those costs without Call today overburdening the people who already live here. Dunn also wants to see roadblocks to development and investment in the City removed. www.sunlightsolution.ca John Hagarty retired from his 13-year stint as Police Chief in the City of Kawartha Lakes in June. Hagarty will be sharing his message of the end of “wardism” with a focus on what is best for the whole City. He would like to see the City more supportive of developers and development and tax rates kept low.

MEETING A LITERARY GIANT
I believe what makes a great writer is the ability to talk to the reader, to bring the reader into an experience or situation and then out the other side. I love to read books like this and, when my local librarian told me about The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, I took her suggestion. I became engrossed for a few weeks in the life of the main character, Aminata Diallo, a young African woman captured as a child and brought to Canada on a slave ship. Because she is literate, she acts as a scribe to record the information about the former slaves. I found myself immersed in the triumphs and tribulations of all the characters. After The Book of Negroes, I launched into The Illegal, another of Lawrence Hill’s novels. Again, the central character drew me in and the secondary personalities gave strength to the story and my experience. I was thrilled to have the chance to meet Mr. Hill when he came to Buckhorn to speak on July 17. A soft-spoken man, Mr. Hill was obviously thrilled to be able to share his passion for books with us. He’s enthusiastic about life and his work. “It’s easy for us to lose sight of the inhumanities like the slave trade, genocide and refugees,” he said. “I want to draw the reader into their space, put faces on individuals and personalize their stories to expand the empathy of Canadians.” Thank you to Jamie Donofrio for the idea of inviting Mr. Hill to speak with us, Stephanie MacPherson and Kim Fernandes of the Trent Lakes Public Library in Buckhorn for facilitating the visit and event. It was truly a night to remember.
COMING OUT OF THE DARK
Local author, Lynn McLaughlin spent her childhood in 25 different foster homes. At 18, she was “aged out” of the CAS system. Lynn was forced to find her own way without guidance. Last year, Lynn published the first installment of her biography, “A Child of the System – Little Lynn’s Story.” It told the tale of her early life as a child in that foster care system. Now, Lynn has completed the second stage of the story -- “A Child of the System - Life As Adult Lynn.”
It’s a difficult read at times, as Lynn takes you through the challenging years with her first husband and her journey to finding true love with her current husband, John. Lynn is Metis from New Brunswick and now lives in Bobcaygeon. When Lynn talks about why she’s written her books she says, “I’ve been on a twenty year healing journey. I no longer suffer in silence. I am a survivor with a sober mind. I am home.” You can purchase a copy of the book by emailing Lynn at cotskids33@gmail.com or contact her by phone at 705-738-2206. She is currently setting up signing events at the Bobcaygeon and Lindsay libraries, with dates to be determined.

That’s the premise of the latest unique fundraiser from Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Three challengers have stepped forward hoping to not sample some stinky fish. Dave Illman and Julie Corlett from BOB FM are a team; Mike Perry from the Kawartha Family Health Team and past president of the Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce; and new Kawartha Lakes Police Chief Mark Mitchell It’s up to you .. the challenger with the least funds raised will have to sample “stinky fish”. The Baltic herring, known as strömming in Swedish, is found in the North Sea. It is fermented for 6 months with just enough salt to keep it from rotting. The oldest archeological findings of fermented fish are 9,200 years old and found in the south portions of Sweden. To make a donation, go to www. kawarthalakesfoodsource.com. It was what I imagine being in a time machine would be like. What a nice job the restorer made of said vehicle.”

ENJOYING THE SHOPPING BUS
More than 130 riders took advantage of the second test run of a weekly shopping bus in the City of Kawartha Lakes. The shopping bus is part of a resident-drafted, three-point plan to expand rural transportation for communities across Kawartha Lakes. Originally tested for a day in July, last week’s second trial run had a different route which included stops in: Lindsay, Long Beach, Fenelon Falls, Eganridge (to offer summer visitors a way to explore the area), Bobcaygeon, Dunsford, Omemee and Bethany. Mike Perry, Co-Chair of the Kawatha Lakes Rural Transportation Working Group said he is very pleased with the results. “The numbers speak for themselves. People are proving that we really need - and use transit here across our communities.” Perry noted that he did not know what to expect with the second test run given it was covering a larger area and no paid advertising had been used. Perry said he is thrilled with the service and its uptake to date. The only complaints heard about the bus were about bumpy parts of municipal roads. If sustainable, the bus will run weekly on a permanent basis, growing as needed to meet demand. Additional tests will continue into September. Once the data is collected, local businesses will have an opportunity to advertise and sponsor the bus. Advertisers are encouraged to be as creative as they can with this unique business opportunity.
