OVER THE BACK FENCE

I’m going to give away a couple of “million dollar ideas”. They are yours and if they come to fruition, a small cut of the proceeds is all I ask. Last week, I saw a news story on television about a group of women who have invented a baby car seat with heat sensors and alarms. It’s a very clever idea, and, if you have your child out with you at the beach or public event in the summer, it’s a good idea to know if the child is overheating. However, these women came up with the invention to help alert parents to this danger if the child is left in the car. Wait a minute ... if you leave your child in the car alone, it will send an alarm to your cell phone to let you know your child might be in danger in the overheating car? That’s right. I thought we were supposed to be teaching people NOT to leave their children in the car AT ALL! I don’t mean to downplay the possible tragedy that could occur and has happened to many families. It is

Cover photo: Freya & Keira at T.H.R.I.L. Photo credit: Supplied by Kelly Russell

very sad when a child dies when they’re left in a hot vehicle. A better invention would be an alarm that makes a very loud noise if you leave your child IN the car at all. Some kind of audio sensor you wear around your wrist that will activate if you walk away from your vehicle without the child. All of a sudden, you’ll hear a very loud voice ... “Hey you, don’t forget your child!” This could be used for pets as well. Put a sensor on the dog’s collar to alert the pet owner before they even leave the area that their animal could be in danger if left in the vehicle. Better still, leave the pet at home in the cool house. I think people might react better if there’s someone yelling at them.

TRULY MADDENING

The madness in Bobcaygeon’s Midnight Madness now makes sense. After attending for many years, this time we had two recently toilet-trained family members, which means that when it’s time to go, it’s really time to go! There was no washroom in the ice cream shop where we downed big scoops. We were told to go to Bigley’s. But the customer washroom there was out of order. We were told to go to the locks. We arrived there to be “greeted” by a woman who emerged from the washroom, and despite entreaties, locked the door behind her, saying the facilities were only for paying boaters. We went back to Bigley’s where a kind person allowed my 4-year-old to use the staff bathroom. Meanwhile, my young nephew was also looking for a bathroom to use. He was told to go to Foodland, only to find that the toilet there was also out of order. I’m sure he wasn’t the only one who ended up relieving himself in an alley. For such a fun, family-friendly event, surely a few porta-potties would be worth employing? Or some clear messages about the availability of the toilets at the Lock and alternatives? J. Smith, Toronto

UNASSUMED ROAD RESIDENT COMMENTS

This letter is with respect to The Kawartha Promoter’s July 25 article about seasonal roads. As a resident on an unassumed road, I have a concern and take exception to Council’s approach and conclusions. If the City staff have determined there is no legal liability to upkeep private and unassumed roads; then why are Mink Alley, Foulson Crescent and especially Shore Road (which is privately owned) exempted from being struck off the list of roads that currently receive city upkeep and winter plowing. Is it that senior Council member(s) have special interest in ensuring the preserving of service schedule for a very few and thus are discriminating against all other CKL residents who do not receive equal city services? The City as well “claims there has been little negative feedback from citizens who live on unassumed roads”. Each year the residents of our road (and I am confident all others) have to raise thousands of dollars via door-to-door collection. These monies are in addition to their property taxes and are spent to cover road maintenance, materials and snow plowing. If City staff want real feedback, please attend annual road meetings and or personally speak directly with constituents. W. Price, Fenelon Falls

As Members of the Lindsay Bassmaster Chapter, we take fishing conservation to heart. In 2009, two of our members sat on the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s public input committee for the Zone 17 Fisheries Management Plan (FMP). For years, we were also involved doing walleye counts for the Ministry. The FMP was a 10-year plan. There was supposed to be a review after five years to evaluate the success failure of the measures put in place. We 2 hour or installation understood thatmodifications the review would be made public as it No structural was created with public input. In 2014, there were no to your home published results at the midpoint. NowCall thattoday 10 years have passed, and the walleye numbers continue to decline, we want to know how badly they have decreased. And not just in the past 10 years, but since the 1970s when walleye fishing in www.sunlightsolution.ca the Kawarthas was the best in Ontario – if not Canada. Back then, American anglers made the drive to this area because it was worth it. No longer does this happen. We feel that the public should be made aware of the walleye fishery today. We hope you will make the results of the 10-year walleye management plan public. And then, we hope your Ministry will do something about it.

99 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL!

On August 13, the Bridge Players at the Bobcaygeon Seniors Centre held a celebration for Jack Hicks, who turned 99. There was a luncheon and laughs were shared with his many friends. Jack is an inspiration to all of us. He is remarkably active and plays bridge, drives his car, exercises twice weekly and plans on returning to the golf course shortly. He is a fun person to be with and always has a smile on his face. Congratulations, Jack. May we enjoy many more years of shared activities with you. Submitted by Sandra Small and Dorothy Hannon.

I LOVE BOBCAYGEON

By Lauren Bellissimo

Have you ever thought of your favourite place in the world? Well, I have! My favourite place I’ve ever been to is Bobcaygeon. I love Bobcaygeon because it is small, full of lakes and my grandparents live there. The first reason I love Bobcaygeon is because it is a small town. What I like about the fact that it’s small, is that you can walk around instead of driving. What’s even better is that you can also use other forms of water transportation like a jet ski or a kayak, for example. One day we rode our kayaks into town and we got some ice cream, and it tasted better and more refreshing after we’d rode the kayaks. This is why having a small town is terrific! The second reason I love Bobcaygeon is because there is a lot of lakes to fish in, swim in, boat in and much more. Bobcaygeon has a lot of lakes. Almost every house is on one. Imagine having a lake for a backyard; well that’s what it’s like in Bobcaygeon. For example, when I get bored, I just go outside to the lake and go in the kayak, feed the ducks or swim. This shows that having a lot of lakes in your town is great! Although Bobcaygeon is good because it’s small and full of lakes, the best thing of all about Bobcaygeon is that my grandparents live there! Whenever I go up north to Bobcaygeon, they always make my visit special fun and happy. For example, they always take me on boat rides, or make my favourite dish for dinner! They also play with us whenever we ask. They really are great grandparents.

Bobcaygeon is a great and happy place to me. Based on the fact that it’s small, has lots of lakes and my grandparents live there, I love Bobcaygeon and I hope sometime in your life you will have time to visit Bobcaygeon. So if you’re a person who likes calm, happy places full of activities, Bobcaygeon is the place for you. Lauren is 11 years old and lives in Connecticut. She and her family come to visit for a month every year.

MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES

By April Scott

Sadly, we have come to the end of the Concerts in the Park program. It has been a great summer music wise and, indeed, weather wise. The Council hopes that everyone enjoyed the choice of both children’s and adult concerts. Our thanks go out to so many people, too numerous to mention, involved in these productions every week. We move on now to our Music Alive Concert series. If we could get the Church filled for these concerts it would be wonderful. Maybe we should mention that although we use Trinity Church as our venue for these concerts, the programs are not of a religious nature. Our initial concert features Ken Lavigne on Saturday, November 2 at 2:30pm. Ken has performed before in Bobcaygeon and we look forward to his return. Further information will be coming before too long. The Council will be taking a brief break to change gears from Summer to the Fall. Visit out Facebook page -- The Bobcaygeon Music Council – for photos of the last few concerts and we will talk to you soon.

KAWARTHA ARTS FESTIVAL

By Belinda Wilson

The Fenelon Fairgrounds will be once again transformed into an art lover’s paradise as the 30th Annual Kawartha Arts Festival opens its gates on Labour Day Weekend. The Festival was first held in 1989 and started off as a small collection of artists gathering together to give something back to the local arts community. It has since grown into one of the largest art festivals in Southern Ontario and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Artists from many different disciplines, including painting, sculpture, jewellery, pottery, fabric and textile art and more, are eager to talk with you about their work. You can view artist demonstrations, and perhaps find that perfect piece for your collection. Be sure to stop by the “Young At Art” display – these budding young artists would love to hear your words of encouragement! The Fenelon Agricultural Society food booth will be open, and the Coby Go-Karts Ice Cream Truck will be on hand for those cold treats. You can enjoy your food while listening to North Country Express, who will be performing all weekend. The Festival runs August 31 from 10am to 5pm and September 1 from 10am to 4pm, and admission and parking are free. A free shuttle bus service runs from downtown Fenelon Falls to the fairgrounds for your convenience. Donations are accepted at the door and offer a chance to win one of the many door prizes drawn throughout the weekend. Photo Credit: Morris Young

Horoscopes

August 22 to September 4 Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) The past cannot be changed. This is a simple, yet powerful, sentence, Aquarius. Learn to recognize what CAN be changed, and deal with that, nothing more. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Fill your life with experiences, not things, Pisces. In the end, it will be the experiences that you will remember and which will mean the most, not the material items you have gathered – usually to impress others. Aries (March 21 to April 20) “It is a kingly act to assist the fallen.”: Ovid. Ovid was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus 1,000 years ago! Yet, he knew the difference between right and wrong and how important it is to help our fellow humans. Sage advice to follow, Aries!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) As the summer draws to a close, Cancer, don’t think all the fun is over! There is still time to kick up your heels and enjoy some last rays. Do it! Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Spontaneity! That is the word for you, Leo, in the next few weeks. Take a risk, walk on the wild side and let yourself be a ‘silly goose’!! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Be sure to stay in touch with friends, Virgo. At this time of year, with people heading off to school or new jobs or just moving on, losing touch can happen. Don’t be the one to let friendships die. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) We’ve said this before – and we’re saying it again – kindness is free. It’s also the best medicine in the world, both for the giver and receiver. Not only does it help another person, but it makes you feel 100 percent a better person, too, Libra.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Never be afraid to express your feelings, Taurus. They are the only things that really matter. In fact, the most important thing you can do is find someone to talk to – and let them know how you FEEL.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) “It’s hard to be self-motivated, when someone is telling you what to do.” Yes, indeed! Sometimes we have to block out others’ advice, even when it is good-hearted, Scorpio. Oftentimes, we must be the sole determiner of our actions and goals.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Apology. It’s a word filled with a lot of emotion. Gemini – you may be faced with the need to say sorry to someone close to you during this astrological phase. Don’t hesitate – it takes courage, but will bring good results.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Hey, Sag. It’s time for some health advice. You’ve been ignoring yourself lately, while spending too much attention on others, and it’s not good! You know what needs to be done, so do it!

Craft Beer Tasting

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) A quiet love may soon appear in your life, dear Capricorn. It will not ‘unsettle’ you – it will be joyous and strong, yet calm and soothing, and everything you hope for!

Health & Wellness UNDERSTANDING REFLEXOLOGY

By Jo-Anne Sugarman

The Hypothesis of Reflexology

Within the body exists Bio-Energy, Life Force, Vital Force and Electromagnetic Energy, controlling and sustaining the body and all its activities. BioEnergy flows within the body along certain pathways or streams (meridians). A stream of Bio-Energy services the glands, organs and body parts within that pathway. Situations arise within the body, both on the physical and emotional levels, that warp the smooth flow of energy, causing an imbalance in the positive and negative aspects of the Bio-Energy and creating energy blockages. Good health indicates the correct flow of Bio-Energy. Reflexology deals with the stimulation and support of the body’s own healing forces.

The Definition and History of Reflexology

One of the earliest evidences that may be interpreted as depicting Reflexology is an Egyptian pictograph found in the tomb of a medical doctor about 5,000 years ago. In the East, Reflexology can be traced from India, to China and then to Japan. Reflexology is a holistic science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands, which correspond to all the glands, organs and body parts. Reflexology uses a unique method of using a type of compression massage on these reflex areas, using the feet and hands as a mini-map or microcosm of the body, to stimulate the different body systems via their respective energy pathways. At the same time, thousands of nerve endings are stimulated thus balancing the body via the nervous systems.

Youth Poster Competition

The Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology induces a state of deep relaxation, tranquility and a wonderful sense of well-being. Via the Nervous and Endrocrine systems, Reflexology is extremely effective in addressing a wide spectrum of stress related disorders such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, muscle tension, headaches/migraine, digestive issues, insomnia, and high blood pressure. Reflexology is preventative health care, boosting the immune system. Reflexology improves circulation, detoxifies the body, revitalizes energy, improves mental function, and stimulates emotional release. Reflexology, along with the therapeutic benefits of Essential Oils and Indian Head Massage, offers a gentle yet extremely powerful healing therapy. Jo-Anne Sugarman is a Reflexology and Champissage practitioner, working at the Zen Den in Bobcaygeon.

CARE WHERE WE LIVE

Cheryl Marks, Nurse Practitioner, is coming to provide care for local patients at the Woodville Medical Centre, beginning the week after Labour Day. Ms. Marks will be a permanent, full-time, primary care provider with the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team. A newcomer to the area, Ms. Marks has career experience in the hospital, long-term care, and family health team settings. She is looking forward to starting her practice now in Woodville and providing care to local patients. Dana Robertson will continue to be the medical receptionist for patients onsite. Woodville patients who have remained with the medical centre will see the new nurse practitioner for the majority of their care, but will also be registered automatically with a family doctor in Lindsay with whom the nurse practitioner will consult as needed. Nurse practitioners can prescribe drugs, order tests and communicate a diagnosis. In addition to a nurse practitioner at the medical centre, the family health team plans to provide access to other health care professionals, including for mental

CHORISTERS CORNER

By April Scott

Yes, the Choristers are alive and well…just taking a break for the summer. We are all raring to go in September for the new season. We have to admit that a few of us have been involved with Concerts in the Park all summer! Our accompanist is taking a trip to PEI for the first two weeks in September which gives us a night to have a Dessert Pot Luck evening when all music from the last concert will be collected and new music for the next concert will be distributed. I think we are all looking forward to getting back together again. There are a lot of friendly people in this group. Of course we are always looking for new friends and singers! If you like to sing, have sung in a choir before and can read music, why not think of joining us. Our first practice back will be on September 17 at 7pm at the Retirement Suites on West Street in Bobcaygeon. Hope you enjoy the rest of thehome summer and we of the home rather than later. will be in touch sooner of
