Truth and reconciliation. That phrase brings forth strong emotions in many Canadians – those from the Indigenous community and those on the outside. I never really gave it much thought until I picked up a book written by a Metis woman who had the courage to write about her life. Lynn McLaughlin now lives in Bobcaygeon with her husband of 10 years. She is a child of the foster care system and a survivor, having lived in 25 houses from birth to age 18. She has had several books of poetry, published and is now releasing “Child of the System – Little Lynn’s Story.” When Lynn called me to ask if I would write an article about her book release, I was hesitant. Not because I was afraid of the subject matter, but sometimes if you write about one

author, others will ask for equal time. I thought about it and believe that this is a particularly important story. We didn’t learn about Indigenous people in our History classes in school. We learned about international wars, Canadian Prime Ministers and other Canadian history. I don’t remember ever being taught about the horrendous treatment of the Indigenous people. Children were taken from their parents and sent to residential schools, fostered into abusive homes and even abused by representatives of organized religion. I feel the need to apologize to them. I’m sorry for the indignities they went through, the pain they suffered and the treatment they receive from others to this day. No one should have to live with this and as a nation, I think it’s time we make our political leaders stand by their promises to make change.

Last Sunday morning my husband couldn’t find his wallet. He searched high and low, racking his brain for where he may have left it. He remembered he popped into Souter’s Variety Store in Coboconk on Saturday, so decided to stop by to ask if he had left it on the counter. As soon as he entered the store, he was greeted with a big smile and the wonderful news that a very kind man had found his wallet outside the store and had handed it into the shop owner who had gone to

It’s Easy Being Green Kicking the weird stuff

Back in my early twenties, I and a group of friends frequented one friend’s cottage in beautiful Haliburton. The grocery store was a regular stop on the way up for all of us and on one particular trip my friend had started a diet to trim off some weight. I took close note of the food items she purchased as I was very curious. One of the things she bought was a jar of diet jam. I just had to know what made it ‘diet’, especially since I had made jam with a friend and noticed how much sugar was in it. I read through the ingredient list and noticed that the sugar was replaced with synthetic sweeteners. When I returned home that week I did some reading and found out that synthetic sweeteners were not all that healthy after all, and went by a lot of different names. From then on I was a label reader and paid close attention to what ingredients were in my food. This became a tedious task! Not only were there a lot of ingredients I didn’t understand listed on the food I was buying, but when I tried to understand them I became more confused. Baking soda can have a technical name, and when you look it up, the explanation is also a little confusing. I found it hard to understand if other ingredients were in fact synthetic, or were just normal ingredients labelled with their scientific names. I

prefer whole, natural foods for the majority of my diet and it was too hard to understand if some stuff was good for my health or not with so much conflicting information. I also noticed that most of the food I was eating was made up mostly of ultra processed flour, sugar, salt, and oil -- not exactly a varied, nutritious diet. I also found there was sugar in things I would not have expected like yogurt, relish, and ketchup. So I gave up trying to understand, and quit using products with weird ingredients! The food choices I make have a direct impact on my emotional and physical health, as well as the health of the environment. If I don’t know what the heck it is, I don’t know if it is healthy and I’m not putting it in my cart!

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS Giving credit where credit is due

We regularly hear about incidents of police misconduct on the news. It seems to be happening more and more often. Recently, it was alleged that two Toronto Police officers were heard on a dashcam video mocking a woman with Down’s Syndrome after pulling her mother over for running a red light. The two were charged under the Police Act. In other news, a London police officer is being charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm, following the arrest of a 60-year-old man earlier this year. The man was allegedly arrested, and then released unconditionally by police officers. Later that day, he was taken to hospital and was diagnosed with serious injuries according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU is tasked with investigating police-involved death or injury and statistics show the number of cases opened was 327 in 2016. That’s an increase of 5 percent. While we are hearing more about officers behaving badly, some criminally, we are also hearing more about their acts of kindness. Something I think they don’t get enough credit for the good things they do. Recently, a Toronto cop purchased a shirt and tie for a young man who had, allegedly, been caught stealing. The man said he needed the clothing for an upcoming job interview. Instead of laying charges the officer bought the clothing and gave it to the young man. Later we learned he got the job!!

In Lindsay a few weeks ago, an officer spotted a vehicle driving down the road late at night with sparks flying from the wheel. It turned out a man was driving with no tire, was dishevelled and clearly in distress. He told police he hadn’t eaten in days. Instead of taking this man off to jail the officer took him to a fast food restaurant for something to eat and then took him to hospital for a mental health assessment. In both of these cases, charges and jail would not have helped anyone. It would not have been good for society, or for the individuals involved. Without a job, the first man would have possibly continued to break the law to pay bills or buy food. In the second case this man needed specialized help and the officer got him that help. People are quick to judge police when they do something wrong, and we should be. But we should also give credit where credit is due. These officers and many more do “the right thing’” day in and day out. Rather than criticize, we must hail these efforts and hope more police follow suit.

BREWERY GOES DOWNTOWN

Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. has signed a lease with Parks Canada to turn the Former Post Office Building at 15 Bolton Street at Lock 32 into a microbrewery with a retail store, tap room, and gift shop. “We are excited to be working with Parks Canada to fulfill our original goal of building our brewery in Bobcaygeon and producing our beer here,” said Richard Wood, President and Co-Founder of Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. “We look forward to a strong long-term relationship with Parks Canada and the community to promote both craft beer and economic development in Bobcaygeon and the surrounding areas.” Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. began operations in 2015 and has three core brands, Common Loon APA, Dockside Red Ale, and Sunset Golden Ale, in addition to multiple seasonal brands. Its beers are currently brewed on contract in Ottawa, and are available at the LCBO, The Beer Store, and select licensed grocery stores. Bobcaygeon Brewing Company won a gold medal at the 2017 Canadian Brewing Awards for its Dockside Red Ale, which was recently listed at the LCBO. Richard says they plan on opening the doors of the brewery in 2018.

What started as a small women’s clothing retailer in the Towne & Country Centre in Lindsay 40 years ago has grown into one of the city’s most successful women’s and menswear stores in the Kawarthas. Fashion Plus opened in 1977 and only carried ladies’ plus sizes. But the customers loved the product lines and asked for them in petite and regular sizes. Owner Michael Shumsky responded and today, from their locations in Lindsay Square Mall and Portage Place in Peterborough, they are the largest independent Tanjay & Alia store in Ontario. “We’ve seen a dramatic change in women’s fashion,” he says. “The typical look in a bank or office 40 years ago was a navy or black blazer with matching skirt or pant and a white or pink bowtie blouse. Today, it is less structured with softer lines in pastels and prints. Denim has become a strong fashion item -- and we’re not talking about Levi jeans.” The idea for a menswear store came from the desire for a change of careers. Both Peter Shumsky and Monty Wiegand (brothers-in-law) wanted to change career direction back in 2007. While working together one summer, Peter and Monty built a fence and jokingly referred to themselves as ‘Fence Brothers’.

When the idea to create a menswear store came about, the name ‘Fence Brothers’ seemed to fit. So Fence Brothers Menswear was born. In July, Fashion Plus and Fence Brothers Menswear joined forces and moved into a larger location of 4,400 square feet at Lindsay Square Mall. Peter says, “The new store has been very well received and looks forward to a bright future.” Fashion Plus carries a range of Tanjay and Alia clothes in a variety of colours, patterns and styles in sizes 6 to 24W. Fence Brothers carries a wide array of casual clothing, suits, sport coats, dress shirts, dress pants, and big and tall fashions. Their brands include Woolrich, Haggar, Dockers, Point Zero, Polifroni, Cruze Leather, Lois Jeans, and Paragon Suits. The family-owned and operated business is celebrating their 40 years with a special summer clearance sale featuring 50 percent off regular prices.

CELEBRATE THE TRAIL

The Trans Canada Trail (TCT), with support from Canadian Heritage, has a goal to connect The Great Trail and the country for a grand celebration on August 26. Two hundred communities across Canada will be celebrating the full connection of The Great Trail on the same date. In Kawartha Lakes, the celebration takes place at Reaboro Park. This free event, from 12 noon to 2pm, will feature food, games, entertainment and face painting. At 1pm, there will be a tree planting ceremony to mark the park’s connection with the 24,000 km Great Trail.

The Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. (Community Hydro-Electric Systems Transfers) Fund provides financial assistance to non-profit, community based organizations that provide programs, projects, services, or activities that enhance the quality of life for Bobcaygeon residents in the areas of health, arts, culture, leisure, heritage, education and the environment. The submission deadlines are the last Friday in October annually no later than 4:30 p.m. The deadline for 2017 is Friday, October 27th. Macleod Enjoys the Drive

If you live anywhere in rural Ontario, you just might take your mail delivery for granted. Five days a week, you wander down to the end of your lane and the little red flag is standing proudly erect above your box indicating you have mail. Have you ever wondered how your mail got there? Kevin Macleod can answer that question. He is a rural route driver working out of the Lindsay Post Office servicing the community of Oakwood and the side roads surrounding that village. Every weekday morning at 7:30, Kevin begins sorting the mail in Lindsay for his daily run. Most mornings he is on the road by 10:30 with packages and letters for many of the 581 homes on his route. For the last six years, Kevin has delivered thousands of pieces of mail to the customers on his route in his red, white and blue Canada Post van. Kevin is one of the lucky rural route drivers who qualifies for a company vehicle because of the volume of mail for which he is responsible. Kevin benefits from the fact that Canada Post picks up the tab for insurance and gas and provides the maintenance on his delivery van. Because his vehicle is righthand drive, there was certainly a learning curve once he was assigned one of the vans. Macleod was impressed with the quality of driver training Canada Post provided him as he learned the vagaries of a right hand drive vehicle. Kevin jokes that after driving righthand drive all week, he often goes to the wrong door of his personal vehicle on the weekends. Kevin loves to drive, and he traverses some of the prettiest countryside in the City of Kawartha Lakes. He revels in watching the countryside change from behind the wheel of his postal van season in and season out. When asked about the hazards of winter mail delivery, Macleod explained the good luck that he has of having a plow depot based right in Oakwood. Macleod is very impressed with the outstanding job the local snow plow drivers do on a daily basis keeping his route safe for all who drive it. When I asked Kevin if he found the job lonely he responded, “I enjoy my independence as a driver and the countryside is so gorgeous, how can you not enjoy your day at work?” We should all be as lucky to enjoy our jobs as much as Kevin does.

ROCKIN’ THE LOCK

Lock 31 in Buckhorn is the second busiest Lock on the Trent Severn Waterway. In July, one of the busiest seasons on record, more than 3,500 vessels went through the Lock. The community will celebrate the summer at Lock 31 with Rock the Locks on Saturday, August 26 from 10am to 4pm. Enjoy classic cars, vendors along the canal on upper and lower Buckhorn, music along Lakehurst Road, a petting zoo, ARTivity Zone, horse and buggy rides, special interest groups and local businesses. Since there isn’t any public parking on Lakehurst Road during the festivities, you’re encouraged to park up the hill in the Community Centre’s overflow lot. No worries about having to walk downtown - you can catch the horse and wagon ride at no charge! You can experience Lower Buckhorn Lake with a free pontoon boat ride. Check in with Captain Kevin on the lower side of the Lock. Life jackets must be

worn and are supplied by Captain Kevin. Stick around for the Float Your Boat – Light Up the Lake Night Parade into the canal starting at 8:30. You might want to enter your motorized boat in the parade – you need to register in advance at the BCC. Wynne and local MP Jeff Leal recently took a tour of the Kawartha Dairy facility and made the formal announcement of their support for the dairy’s new state-of-the-art refrigeration facility just south of town. “The government is investing $311,000 in that expansion,” said Wynne, “particularly for a refrigeration unit that will allow the business to expand, create 10 more jobs and secure 115 jobs. That’s the kind of growth we want to see in business all over the province.” Minister Responsible for Small Business as well as Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Jeff Leal said, “Kawartha Dairy is a terrific example of a family business here in our community and a real made-in-Ontario success story. This is exactly the type of business that our government – your government – wants to support. Local, growing businesses are important employers in their communities and beyond.” Kawartha Dairy, celebrating its 80th year in business, makes all of its products using fresh milk from Ontario farms. The investment, through the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, will help the company better ensure consistent product quality and explore new product lines so it can expand its domestic and export markets.

Three of Canada’s most experienced and travelled professional standup comedians are bringing their family-friendly acts for one show to The Coronation Hall in Omemee, Saturday, August 26 at 7:30pm. It’s extremely rare for a live, professional standup comedy show - anywhere - to feature a line-up where none of the performers will rely on the F-bomb, offensive language or graphic content, says the show’s producer and emcee, Denis Grignon. The show’s headliner is Evan Carter, a 30-year veteran of standup comedy with numerous national TV and radio credits that include the Halifax Comedy Festival. Greg Eckler spends most of his time these days as a staff writer with the Rick Mercer Report. Tickets are $15 at the door. It is a non-alcoholic event. Doors Are Open

Ian McKechnie, the Secretary of the Kawartha Heritage Network, invites local residents to Doors Open Ontario September 9 and 10, 2017. Doors Open began as an idea in Europe in 1984. Sites of historical and cultural significance were to be open with programming available free of charge to the public. Ontario cultural sites adopted this idea in 2000, with venues in the City of Kawartha Lakes joining in for the 2004 season. In the past, the emphasis of Doors Open has often been admiring the unique architectural treasures across the City of Kawartha Lakes. However, the Doors Open phenomena is about more than buildings, and this year’s event seeks to emphasize cultural experiences. McKechnie, who is also an historical consultant with the Olde Gaol Museum, said this year will be all about those experiences. At each site there will be experts to interact with and, in some cases, activities to participate in. McKechnie wants people to experience

Victoria County heritage in a different way. He would like Doors Open participants to “taste, smell, hear and touch” their heritage. The goal of Doors Open this year is to “engage all the human senses.” More information can be found at the Doors Open Ontario website at doorsopenontario.on.ca.

She is a survivor, having lived in 25 houses from birth to age 18. I believe we should all read this book. For the past seven years, Pieter has walked across the stage at an international competition and picked up a prestigious award for Mariposa Dairy cheese. Most recently, at the UK International Cheese Competition, Mariposa Dairy under the ‘Lenberg Farms’ label took home three awards. Like many teenagers, when Meaghan Wood finished high school, she had no idea what she wanted to do. That’s not unusual. But what is unusual is where she ended up. Meaghan recently opened Handsome Jack’s Fly Fishing Shop in Peterborough, catering to this special brand of anglers. She credits her Dad with helping her find her passion. “One day my Dad made me go fly fishing with him. I didn’t want to go because I’d never fished before and had zero interest in it. He forced me to go and I’m glad he did. I caught a fish on a fly rod and that was it – I knew what I wanted to do.” After learning about the sport from others during some time at a Montana fishing lodge, Meaghan

returned to the area and opened the store. You can find rods, flies, line and other gear not only for the fly fisherperson, but she also carries some traditional lures and plastic baits for those into other types of fishing. Meaghan says, “I have a big respect for all angling, but I think fly fishermen and women see fishing differently. There’s a lot of catch and release and respect for the environment and fish species. We tend to see the water differently.” Fishing became a recreational activity in the 1900s. But fly fishing has been around much longer than that, some say dating back to the 15th Century. In fly fishing, the weight of the line carries the hook through the air and the hand-tied flies drift across the top of the water, mimicking the movement of bugs. This draws the fish to the top of the water where they try to catch the fly. In our mind’s eye, we see a man in hip waders standing in a river, casting into the current to catch the elusive fish. Today, fly fishing is also done from the comfort of a boat. “I do a lot of lake fly fishing for muskie, pike and bass,” says Meaghan. “We fish a number of local lakes alongside the spin and bait fishermen and women. We’re looking for the right spots just like everyone else.” Meaghan wants to get more people, especially women, involved in the fly fishing sport. So expect to see some courses at Handsome Jack’s for those who want to learn how to cast and tie flies. Although she’s only 19 years old, Meaghan says she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to fly fishing. “It’s not just a business, we want Handsome Jack’s to become a hub, a community centre where fly fishermen and women can gather and learn from each other.” Meaghan has found her calling and wants to help others find that happy place. “Once you learn to see the world through the eyes of a fly fisherman, it’s a beautiful place.” You can find Handsome Jack’s in Peterborough at 776 Technology Drive, just south of Highway 7 off Ashburnham Road.

The Group of Seven, a collection of artists responsible for one of the first major artistic movements in Canada from 1920 to 1933, believed that true art is created through direct contact with nature. Many of Canada’s beautiful landscapes were captured in paintings that have since become an important part of Canadian history. A landscape that is frequently seen in Group of Seven paintings, namely those created by James Edward Hervey MacDonald, is the Gull River of the Coboconk and Norland area. JEH MacDonald made many trips to the Gull River area for inspiration during his painting career. The paintings from the Group of Seven cofounder pay tribute to the picturesque area, highlighting the lush and colourful landscape that we call home. However, nature is only part of the inspiration for JEH MacDonald. The painting titled T.M. in Gull River depicts MacDonald’s then 10-year-old son, Thoreau, playing in the river. JEH made sure to incorporate his family life into his work and took his son with him on many of his trips – and the Gull River remains a popular area for family fun. Labour Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. It means back to work and back to school for many people. But for those of us lucky enough to live here in the Kawarthas, bring it on! After what many are calling a dismal summer with rain, storms and unpredictability, we’re ready for what we used to call “Indian Summer.” This season includes warm, sunny days and non-humid nights -- weather that’s perfect for campfires, hikes, boating and fishing! The Autumn Equinox isn’t until September 22, when day and night are each about 12 hours long (with the actual time of equal day and night, in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring a few days after the autumnal equinox). The Sun crosses the celestial equator going southward; it rises exactly due east and sets exactly due west. Let’s not encourage the cooler weather to come just yet ... there’s still a lot of summer left!

Labour Day has been celebrated in Canada on the first Monday in September since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union’s strike for a 58hour work-week, almost a full decade before a similar event in New York City. The Toronto Trades Assembly (TTA) called its 27 unions to demonstrate in support of the Typographical Union who had been on strike since March 25. George Brown, Canadian politician and editor of the Toronto Globe hit back at his striking employees, pressing police to charge the Typographical Union with “conspiracy.” Although the laws criminalizing union activity were outdated and had already been abolished in Great Britain, they were still on the books in Canada and police arrested 24 leaders of the Typographical Union. Labour leaders decided to call another similar demonstration on September 3 to protest the arrests. Seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald to repeal the “barbarous” anti-union laws. Parliament passed the Trade Union Act on June 14 the following year, and soon all unions were seeking a 54-hour work-week. While Labour Day parades and picnics are organized by unions, many Canadians simply regard Labour Day as the Monday of the last long weekend of summer. Non-union celebrations include picnics, fireworks displays, water activities, and public art events. Since the new school year generally starts right after Labour Day, families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer. An old-fashioned tradition in Canada and the United States frowns upon the wearing of white after Labour Day. Explanations for this tradition vary; the most common is that white is a summer colour and Labour Day unofficially marks the end of summer. (Source: Wikipedia)

A Labour Day Weekend tradition continues in Kinmount with the 146th Annual Kinmount Fair. The Kinmount Agricultural Society is inviting everyone for another outstanding lineup of entertainment, rides and, of course, agricultural events on September 1, 2 and 3. As far as music goes, the lineup is terrific! On Friday at 9pm in the arena, it’s Jesse Slack; on Saturday at 2pm, the River Town Saints take to the Grandstand stage; and at 9pm Saturday, back by popular demand is Ambush. Donna M. Admission is $12 for adults, $2 for children in Grades 1 through 8, while admission for pre-school children is free. A weekend pass is $32 and tickets to the Friday dance are $15 each. For the second year in a row, 16-year-old Clara-Ann Woolsey from Bobcaygeon made it to the Canadian 3D National Archery Championships. And for the second year in a row, Clara-Ann came home with a silver medal. This year, though, her medal meant so much more. On her way to the Championships in Quebec in August, Clara-Ann’s family got the news that her Grandma Sanderson had passed away. They ended up driving halfway back to where Clara-Ann’s other grandparents met them to pick up Clara-Ann’s mom, Carol and take her home to look after things. Not sure what to do, Clara-Ann was encouraged to continue to Nationals, as that was what her Grandmother would have wanted. After a 14-hour journey, Clara-Ann and her Dad, who was also competing, arrived at the hotel in Quebec. Emotionally and physically exhausted, the next morning they took to Amos course for the three-day shoot. Clara-Ann competed against five other girls in the Cadet category (40 yards and under). There were 80 targets and, over the three days, she covered a distance of about 28 kilometres on the course. As well as competing in archery tournaments every weekend, Clara-Ann is an avid volunteer, racking up 111.5 hours this year. She’s a Junior Camp Counsellor at Kawartha Settlers’ Village, has volunteered at Case Manor every Tuesday morning to help with the fishing group and was one of the models for Bigley’s charity fashion show at Case Manor. In the evenings, Clara-Ann works at Embers in the take-out/ice cream parlour. After the first day of competition in Quebec, Clara-Ann called her mom, exhausted and in tears. She told her Mom she had just finished the round and that she had done it for Grandma. It’s tough enough to compete at this level, but to have done it with a heavy heart is a true testament to this young lady’s character. Way to go, Clara-Ann!

CARDEN OLD TYME FIDDLE CONTEST

The Carden Recreation Centre is the place to be on Sunday, August 27 for the 21st Annual Carden Old Tyme Fiddle Contest. It starts at 12:30 and admission is $5 for adults (children 12 and under and contestants are admitted for free). There’s dry camping available and a jam session on Friday and Saturday evening with the back-up band in the pavilion. The Carden Recreation Centre is at 258 Lake Dalrymple Road, Lake Dalrymple (north of Kirkfield, east of Orillia).

While relaxing one afternoon, absorbed in a movie, my husband and I were jolted back to reality when we heard a loud bang against our family room window. Running outside, my mind was already pleading with Mother Nature, please let it be stunned, just stunned. Unfortunately, it was not to be. There at my feet lay a cedar waxwing, as still as death. Even in my dismay, as I held its lifeless body, I couldn’t help admire the absolute beauty of this once vibrant creature - feathers streamlined soft

and smooth, subtle shades of green blending into delicate lines of detail around its beak and now still eyes. Its tufted headpiece tilted at a cruel angle. Such a shame! This was the third bird (that I know of) that met this fate this summer due to contact with our windows. Shedding tears, I vowed to never let this happen again. Not on my house anyway. According to an article in The Washington Post (Feb. 3, 2014) up to a billion birds die from crashing into windows each year in the United States, the majority of them home windows. No wonder our songbird populations are in trouble! So what can we do about it? For now, I have long strips of paper haphazardly taped to our windows. Aesthetically it doesn’t look the best and our neighbours must be wondering. One idea is to make faux windowpanes using white tape or using decals to break up the reflective surface. There is a product called ABC BirdTape specifically designed for this purpose. Of course, blinds and closed curtains would help too. Please help to reduce this catastrophic assault on our feathered friends, especially before the fall migration. We don’t want another silent spring!

Kelly Russell is the founder and instructor of T.H.R.I.L, an organization dedicated to help mentally and physically challenged children, youth and adults improve the quality of their lives, with therapy riding lessons. Therapeutic Horse Riding in Lindsay is a not-for-profit, 100 percent volunteer-driven program that offers therapy riding to those with special needs. Currently, there are 25 riders a week enrolled in the program who arrive with family or a caregiver, and with canes, walkers or wheelchairs take a special ramp and ride. Some of these riders even compete. They’re having a Fundraising BBQ, Volunteer Appreciation and Open House at Field of Dreams Farm located at 1072 Monarch Road, just northwest of Lindsay on Sunday, September 24 from 1 to 4pm. The flag and pole were donated to the home by the resident’s council and after many months of planning will now proudly fly on the waterside. On Thursday, July 6th the residents of Case Manor were the star performers at a garden party fashion show, presented by Case Manor and Bigley’s Shoes and Clothing stores of Bobcaygeon. Residents joined the models to showcase the latest fashion collections from Bigley’s dancing their way along the catwalk for this hugely successful event. This year a portion of the funds will go to the Bobcaygeon Legion to support their seniors program in our community.

Health & Wellness Cancer Still Canada’s Biggest Killer

According to Statistics Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society, cancer, of all kinds, is still the largest killer of Canadians by far. One in five Canadians die of heart-related illnesses, five percent die in accidents, and two percent take their own lives, but these numbers pale in comparison with the one in three Canadians who still die from cancer. Every day, 565 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer. Every day, 221 Canadians lose their battle with cancer. Lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Canada. These four cancers by themselves account for 50 percent of all new cases reported by doctors. Your typical Canadian cancer victim is over the age of 50, but doctors are now finding cancers in Canadians of all ages. Having lost a father, mother-in-law, and grandfather to cancer, I have seen the scourge of this illness first hand. Despite some of the numbers listed above, there is real hope in the battle against this disease. More than 60 percent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer live at least five years after their official diagnosis. Prostate cancer survival rates have reached

an incredible 95 percent. Eighty-seven percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer now survive five years or more with the illness. Governments at all levels are spending more on early screening, diagnosis, treatment and followup. The Canadian Cancer Society, with the help of millions of dollars in charitable donations from average Canadians, continues to do cutting edge research and develop treatments that are less invasive and more survivable in the long run. In order for babies to have positive speech, language, and listening outcomes, infants must undergo hearing-loss screening. For those who don’t pass initial screenings, the most critical diagnostic test is the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test. An accurate and reliable predictor of hearing loss in infants, this simple, non-invasive procedure measures electrical impulses as a means of providing important information on a child’s auditory system. Simply put, ABR measures how sound travels through specific anatomical sites that act as “relay stations” along the auditory pathway, from the outer ear to the brainstem. The ABR measurement provides information on the degree, type, and configuration of a hearing loss, thereby allowing the infant to be fitted with a hearing instrument when needed. The most important time for a child to learn language is in the first three years of life, when the brain is developing and maturing. During the week of July 24th to 28th Pigeon Lake Yacht Club offered both youth and adult introduction to sailing courses. These courses were offered in conjunction with Ontario Sailing as part of their BOOM Mobile Sailing Schools. Quoting from the Ontario Sailing website: “In an effort to bring sailing to more people across the province, Ontario Sailing equips two complete mobile sailing schools that travel to different locations every summer. Each mobile team, consisting of two qualified instructors, delivers Sail Canada’s CANSail 1 & 2 basic sailing levels for students ages 8-14 during the day time, as well as adult evening lessons if requested. The mobile units are equipped with eight learn to sail boats, two coach boats, teaching aids and Lifejackets/PFD’s for all participants.” During the day a total of 16 young students, the maximum allowed, attended and had a great time learning the basics of sailing. FEDS FUND SCHOOL STUDY

The federal government has stepped in to fund a school feasibility study for the Curve Lake First Nation. The study, costing about $142,000, will identify the best approach to support the highest-quality learning environment for the community’s youth. Chief Phyllis Williams of Curve Lake First Nation said, “We are pleased with the support from the Government of Canada, which will allow us to continue to deliver high quality education for our children. This support will advance our obligation to provide programming that is culturally viable and vital for the success of our youth, our future.” The study is anticipated to be complete by July 2018. The Curve Lake First Nation School currently operates Kindergarten to Grade 3 programming. Lawn Bowlers Off to Nationals: Rick Tompkins (pictured left), Past President of the Bobcaygeon Lawn Bowling Club, along with his team of Bob Matthews (middle) and Jim Butler (right) won silver in the Men’s Seniors’ Triples Provincial Lawn Bowling Championship held at the Galetta Lawn Bowling Club in Ottawa on August 1 and 2.
